Jay Sekulow, one of the lawyers leading President Donald Trump’s defense in the Senate impeachment trial, attacked the arguments Tuesday by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) against executive privilege — by quoting his own words at him.
Schiff, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee and is the lead manager for the House Democrats’ case against the president, argued that the president had attempted to obstruct his and fellow Democrats’ impeachment inquiry by instructing senior aides in the executive branch not to comply with congressional subpoenas to appear and testify.
But Sekulow reminded Schiff that he had taken an entirely different approach when the Republican-led Congress held then-Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for refusing to provide key documents relating to Operation Fast and Furious, President Barack Obama’s attempt to use gunrunning to Mexico to trace the weapons’ path and — critics said — to justify new restrictions on firearms. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has ramped up messaging and legal efforts targeting sanctuary cities in an effort to shame them and mirror the White House’s tone, according to two senior administration officials aware of the change.
ICE is making a lot of noise after years of criticizing how some Democrat-run cities and states known as sanctuary zones, where police will not report illegal immigrants, will not honor the agency’s requests to work together.
Federal officers at ICE are able to look at local arrests and see if a person is legally or illegally in the country. If that person appears to be an illegal immigrant, the officer can request that the local law enforcement agency notify ICE before they are released so ICE can take custody and begin deportation proceedings. Sanctuary zones release illegal immigrants after they make bail or serve time in jail, including those with criminal convictions, without notifying ICE.
ICE is guided by the same policies that existed under the Obama administration, but it is acting more aggressively at the direction of the Trump White House. The agency’s acting director, Matt Albence, is speaking out more, ICE’s presence on social media has risen, and its retaliatory legal action against sanctuary zones this month is unprecedented.

A state lawmaker is finally taking aim at drag queen story hour events that allow creeps and weirdos to groom children in public libraries and other formerly wholesome venues.
Rep. Ben Baker, a legislator from southwestern Missouri, has introduced the “Parental Oversight of Public Libraries Act” to provide criminal sanctions against librarians who permit children to be exposed to drag queen story hour events without parental consent.
“In some places — St. Louis, Kansas City and I think St. (Joseph) — they’ve had these drag queen story hours and that’s something that I take objection to and I think a lot of parents do,” Baker said. “That’s where in a public space, our kids could be exposed to something that’s age-inappropriate. That’s what I’m trying to tackle.”

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Deaths from China’s new virus rose to 17 on Wednesday with more than 540 cases confirmed, increasing fears of contagion from an infection suspected to originate from illegally-traded wildlife.
The previously unknown, flu-like coronavirus strain is believed to have emerged from an animal market in central Wuhan city, with cases now detected as far away as the United States.

On the menu at China virus market: rats and live wolf pups
The food market where China’s deadly virus surfaced was a smorgasbord of exotic wildlife ranging from wolf pups to species linked to previous pandemics such as civets, according to vendor information and a Chinese media report.
The Huanan Seafood Market in the central city of Wuhan came under greater scrutiny on Wednesday as Chinese officials said that the virus which has so far killed nine people and infected hundreds may have originated in a wild animal sold at the food emporium.
Past deadly epidemics have been blamed on wild animals — Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was linked to Chinese consumption of civet meat — setting Chinese authorities up for potential embarrassment if lax supervision of wildlife trafficking is found at fault in the latest outbreak.
A price list circulating on China’s internet for a business at the Wuhan market lists a menagerie of animals or animal-based products including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game — 112 items in all.
“Freshly slaughtered, frozen and delivered to your door,” said the price list for the vendor, “Wild Game Animal Husbandry for the Masses”.
Gao Fu, director of the Chinese centre for disease control and prevention, said in Beijing on Wednesday that authorities believe the virus likely came from “wild animals at the seafood market” though the exact source remains undetermined.
China bans the trafficking of a number of wild species or requires special licenses, but regulations are loose for some species if they are commercially farmed.
AFP was unable to directly confirm the authenticity of the price list. Phone calls to the vendor went unanswered, and attempts to connect to its social media accounts were rejected.
The Beijing News published a photo Tuesday showing the same vendor’s now-shuttered store front, as authorities in white hazmat suits milled about.
The paper also quoted other merchants as saying trade in wildlife took place up until the market was shuttered for disinfection shortly after the outbreak.
A number of the early sufferers of the virus, now known as the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV), were employees of the market.
– Virus ‘spillover’ –
Many exotic species are still widely consumed in China or other Asian countries where they are considered a delicacy — like the civet or some rats or bats — or for purported health benefits that are unproven by science.
But this brings growing human health risks, said Christian Walzer, executive director of the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society’s Health Program.
Walzer said 70 percent of all new infectious diseases come from wildlife, with habitat encroachment increasing the chances of pathogens spreading.
“Wildlife markets offer a unique opportunity for viruses to spill over from wildlife hosts,” he said.
“It is essential to invest resources not only into discovering new viruses, but more importantly, in determining the epidemiological drivers of… (the) spillover, amplification, and spread of infectious diseases.”
Bats are thought to have spawned SARS, which in 2002-03 killed hundreds of people in Asia, mostly China.
SARS was also found in civets in wildlife markets in China, with many scientists believing the bat virus infected the cat-like creatures and then humans who ate them.
Following SARS, China cracked down on consumption of civets and some other species, but conservationists say the trade continues.
China has so far won praise for its openness and handling of the current outbreak in stark contrast to SARS, when it was accused of stifling information and failing to cooperate with the rest of the world.

Last year, largely as part of Macron’s overall plan to combat radical Islam, the French government shut down mosques and schools in 15 neighbourhoods across the country.

Two young asylum seekers have been fatally stabbed in brawls at the Moria camp this month. An 18-year-old Afghan girl was also seriously injured in a knife attack this week and remains in hospital.
Three asylum seekers in Greek custody have committed suicide in recent weeks.
“We demand the immediate shutdown of Moria,” read a banner carried in the Lesbos demonstration.
But the new camp plans have been strongly opposed by local officials, who want smaller facilities after hosting thousands of asylum seekers for the past five years.
Greece last year again became the main entry into Europe for migrants and refugees, many fleeing war or poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Syria.
The UN refugee agency in 2019 recorded more than 59,000 arrivals by sea and more than 14,000 via the land border with Turkey.
Already more than 3,000 have arrived so far this year.
Only a fraction are allowed passage to the Greek mainland while the rest spend months in the camps, waiting for their asylum applications to be processed.

“Masked gunmen on Wednesday ambushed and killed the local commander of a paramilitary security force in southwestern Iran, an associate of Iran’s top general recently killed in an American drone strike in Baghdad, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The slain commander, Abdolhossein Mojaddami, headed the Basij forces, a paramilitary wing of the Revolutionary Guard used for internal security and other tasks, in the town of Darkhoein. He was gunned down in front of his home in the town in the country’s oil rich Khuzestan province.
Two gunmen on a motorcycle, armed with an assault rifle and a hunting rifle, ambushed Mojaddami, IRNA reported. Other Iranian media said the gunmen’s faces were covered with masks and that four shots were fired.
The case is under investigation and a motive was not immediately clear, but Basij units had been involved in violent clashes with demonstrators in the area in November in which many protesters were injured and killed. Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard has filed a defamation suit against Hillary Clinton for calling her a “Russian asset,” according to newly filed court papers.

The real impeachment fight

The U.S. House of Representatives found no evidence of any crime committed by President Trump. So it forwarded two made-up articles of impeachment, neither of which is about a crime.
There is no foundation for impeachment. In deciding when to release aid to Ukraine (the so-called “abuse of power” article), Trump was exercising his constitutional prerogatives in foreign policy. In invoking executive privilege (the so-called “obstruction of Congress” article), he was asserting a privilege established in longstanding precedent, including both usage and judicial rulings.
If Congress disagrees with Trump’s priorities or interpretations, it has equally longstanding remedies, which it can attempt to use. Congress may not have the political unity to overrule the executive in the case of those disagreements. That doesn’t constitute an emergency. The ultimate remedy is to make a case to the public that the voters need to elect a different president, or change the majority-minority balance in Congress with the next election.
Since the House forwarded two articles of impeachment that have no foundation as criminal matters, the Senate is under no obligation to go rooting around with new witnesses and additional “evidence” to try to manufacture criminal charges. There are no criminal charges. It’s not the Senate’s job to come up with them.

Joe Biden told Vice News that he would not seek to deport drunk driving illegal migrants.
Immigration agents should “only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that’s committed [in the United States], and I don’t count drunk driving as a felony,” Biden told his interviewers Jan. 20.
“We’re not going to deport anybody who has not — in this country — committed a felony in this country. In this country, committed a felony,” he said.
But many Americans have been killed by drunk-driving illegals, and DUIs are commonplace among illegals. For example, In fiscal 2019, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency arrested many thousands of illegals following DUI charges. The 2019 end-of-year report showed 49,106 criminal convictions for DUIs, alongside 39,717 traffic violations, 47,453 “dangerous drugs” convictions, and 26,156 assault charges.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Rep. Adam Schiff takes materials and testimony and then selectively leaks them in order to paint a specific narrative. Then a few days later it comes out that he was either lying or purposely taking things out of context.
It’s a story as old as time, or at least the current impeachment push, and Schiff is back at it.
If you’ll recall, last week, former Giuliani associate Lev Parnas handed over supposed “evidence” on Trump and Ukraine to the House. Parnas then went on a media tour because back in the real world, the SDNY won’t even bother talking to him about a cooperation deal because he’s so non-credible.
Now, news is coming out that Schiff lied about what Parnas’ documents contained.

Former Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan said Wednesday that Joe Biden has “lost his mind,” calling out the former vice president for saying that the United States should not deport illegal immigrants over a drunk-driving arrest.
Biden also threatened ICE with punishment if the agency were to deport illegal immigrants arrested for drunk driving, saying his administration would fire agents who arrest and deport illegal immigrants for such a crime.
“They go off to school wondering whether their mom comes and picks them up, is she not going to be there because an ICE agent was there to arrest her,” Biden told Vice News on Monday.
The 2020 Democratic front-runner added, “You’re going to get fired, you’re fired if in fact you do that. You only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that’s committed and I don’t count drunk driving as a felony.”

Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden was ordered to Arkansas court next Wednesday to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt for violating court orders to reveal his financial information.
Hunter had a child with 28-year-old Lunden Roberts after meeting her at a DC strip joint where she worked as a stripper and she is in court demanding Hunter pay child support.
Ms. Roberts dragged Hunter Biden into a nasty court battle after he has ‘refused to pay child support for over a year’ and refused to pay her $11,000 legal bill.
Lunden Roberts told the court that Hunter Biden “had no involvement in the child’s life since the child’s birth, never interacted with the child, never parented the child,” and “could not identify the child out of a photo lineup.”
Hunter and his baby mama Lunden Roberts are due back in court on January 29 for a pre-trial hearing.

Iranian commander gunned down in front of his own home
Iranian Basij forces commander Abdolhossein Mojaddami was gunned down in front of his own home on Wednesday in the Khuzestan province of Iran, news agency IRNA reported.
The Basij forces [Gestapo], one of the five forces [the worst of five] of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC), are often used to suppress protests and demonstrations in the Islamic Republic.
He was killed by two men who wore masks and were riding a motorcycle, Iranian media reported.
Iranian security forces are investigating the matter.

In Defense of Michelle Malkin’s Right to Free Speech
Will we stay silent while a public university assaults the First Amendment?
Conservative commentator and author Michelle Malkin’s right to free speech has been under consistent vicious attack — most recently at the publicly funded University of Maine. The College Republicans student group at the university, which had invited Ms. Malkin to speak, was forced to scurry around at the last minute to find a suitable forum outside the university campus for her talk. This was all set into motion when the University of Maine stripped the College Republicans of their status as an official student organization after their “faculty adviser”, political science professor Amy Fried, quit because she disapproved of Michelle Malkin’s conservative views. As a result, the College Republicans could no longer use the campus facilities to host the speech. No official recognition means no student government funding and no complimentary rooms or meeting spaces on campus, which the College Democrats continue to enjoy without interruption during this presidential election year.
Three off campus venues then proceeded to reverse their agreements to let the University of Maine College Republicans use their facilities for Michelle Malkin’s delivery of her speech. First, Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks in South Portland cancelled, after being informed by the university that the University of Maine College Republicans were not an official student group on campus. Then the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston and Martindale Country Club in Auburn followed suit, succumbing to pressure from self-appointed censors of free speech. Ms. Malkin was finally able to speak last Friday night to a standing-room-only crowd at Sabattus Town Hall. “It’s flabbergasting,” Ms. Malkin said, “that it took four different venues to find a place for peace-loving patriots to gather.”

“The Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI), France’s internal intelligence and security agency, has arrested seven Islamist radicals they claim were plotting terrorist attacks.
The DGSI released details of the arrest, saying all of the men involved lived in the city of Brest, with many of them already being under government surveillance prior to the arrests, broadcaster RTL reports.
The suspects are, according to French media, accused of being “an association of criminals with terrorist and criminal aims”. Another source close to the investigation claimed that several of the arrested men are with records on the so-called S-File, the French national terror watchlist database.
The S-File is said to contain tens of thousands of people, most of them radical Islamists, but former General Directorate for External Security (DGSE) agent Yves Trotignon admitted in 2018 that authorities do not have the manpower to keep track of everyone on the list.
Along with potentially plotting attacks, several of the men arrested in Brest are also said to have expressed a desire to travel to the Middle East to join Islamist groups in Iraq and Syria. However, investigators mentioned few details about specific attacks.
The arrests are just the latest related to a potential attack foiled by French authorities within the last year. In May 2019, France had foiled five serious Islamist terror attacks including a plot by two men to attack a kindergarten and hold the children and staff hostage.
Earlier this month, neighbouring Belgium also announced an arrest in the French-speaking city of Verviers in connection with terrorism charges.
A Syrian national was arrested in December with Eric Van Duyse, the spokesman for the federal prosecutor’s office, saying investigators had found a gas cartridge pistol, a machete, and several other bladed weapons in the possession of the Syrian migrant.
“But the investigation did not reveal any trace of a specific target or a real plan for an attack. Let’s say that his activities were worrying, to say the least. On the side of the federal prosecution, we try to work as far upstream as possible,” Van Duyse said.”

VA Legislators Pass New Gun Control Day After 2A Rally
Before yesterday’s rally for the Second Amendment in Virginia even began, Virginia Democrats were smearing it as a dangerous “racist” rally. We were warned that everyone from white supremacist groups to fringe militias and possibly even antifa would be showing up. Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency ahead of the rally, preventing anyone from carrying firearms at the capitol building, and signaling to the media that danger was afoot. “They’re not coming to peacefully protest. They are coming to intimidate and cause harm,” be said at a press conference.
An estimated 22,000 turned out for the rally, 16,000 of which were armed, and there wasn’t a single act of violence. The average protester turned out to be about as provocative as Nick Sandmann’s smirk (i.e., not at all provocative to any sane individual), and the only arrest was for someone who wore a mask in public. Journalists sympathetic to antifa and oblivious to irony were quick to highlight the arrest.
Rather than admit they were mistaken, Northam cited the peacefulness of yesterday’s protests as proof that his unspecified de-escalation measures worked. He also said he would continue to “listen to the voices or Virginians” in a widely ridiculed tweet.

Richard: The Dems aren’t smart enough to understand that the peaceful protest was peaceful because we don’t wnat to fight, not because we won’t fight. Our refusal to riot like their supporters do is taken as a sign of weakness, they never stop to think about and understand that we are the ones who fight the wars, we know what war is like and don’t want war on our home soil. If it is necessary to preserve our freedom we will cast aside our desires to be left along and move against the people who are trying to take our rights away from us.
I am not doing this but I am sure that there are many younger people on our side who are making a list and checking it twice, and they will never be missed. They are pissing off the people who know violence, who in some cases are professionals in the intelligent use of violence. As I said we don’t want a war on our home soil but if necessary we will fight and fight until the people who want to take our rights away are convinced to leave us alone.
Virginia Is Only the Beginning
Despite smears and scare tactics from the Virginia law enforcement and the corporate press, thousands of protestors have landed in the capital of Old Dominion in response to an anti-gun agenda being pushed by the new solid-blue state government. While large protests aren’t particularly unique in American politics, this particular event has captured the media’s imaginations in no small part due to the fact it consists of their favorite sort of villain: largely white, Trump-supporting, armed men. They can’t help but salivate at the idea of it descending into the tragic chaos that occurred in Charlottesville in 2017.
To a certain degree, the showdown in Virginia is really only superficially about guns. It also represents the valid anxiety that has arisen as the state’s rural population finds itself increasingly powerless in the face of rapidly expanding political power wielded by high-population centers.
Of course, it’s not surprising that the same commentators that often condemn—foolishly—economic gentrification, openly cheer political changes that threaten the way of life of families that have lived in an area for, in some cases, hundreds of years.
