Is Mass Civil Disobedience Our Future?

On the holiday set aside in 2020 to honor Martin Luther King, the premier advocate of nonviolent Gandhian civil disobedience, thousands of gun owners gathered in Richmond to petition peacefully for their rights.
King had preached that there was a higher law that justified breaking existing laws that mandated racial segregation.
When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the front of the bus in Montgomery, when Freedom Riders integrated bus terminals, when black students sat at segregated lunch counters in North Carolina, they challenged state law in the name of what they said was a higher law.
And Virginia gun owners believe their moral obligation to protect families, friends and themselves in a violent society justifies their right to keep and carry firearms, no matter what the Virginia legislature says.
Americans have a long history of breaching laws in the name of a higher law or God-given rights.
The patriots of Boston gathered an arsenal at Concord in defiance of the British. To protest a tea tax imposed by parliament, they dressed as American Indians and threw shiploads of imported tea into Boston Harbor.
Shays’ Rebellion in Massachusetts, to protest debt collections in 1786-87, and the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania, to protest a tax, both had to be crushed with force.
Abolitionists supported the violation of fugitive slave laws, the enforcement of which Lincoln endorsed in his first inaugural as a national necessity to restore and preserve the Union.

“Saudi State Minister for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir said Tuesday that the European Parliament’s information about the Kingdom was based on “rumors.”
Addressing the parliament in Brussels, he said: “Stop criticizing our causes. We are a sovereign nation that refuses to be patronized.”
He also added that Europe’s role in the region was significant militarily and economically.
Jubeir stressed that Saudi Arabia was continuing its efforts in combating and eliminating terrorism. It does not allow the spread of hate and has for years been cracking down on those promoting extremism.
“Qatar is spreading hate and using its various platforms to promote such rhetoric,” he went on to say, citing the country’s support for terrorist and extremist groups. “It must alter its behavior and cease supporting terrorism.”
Moreover, he declared Iran as the world’s greatest state-sponsor of terrorism. He accused it of launching attacks against Saudi Arabia, noting that Shiites in Iraq, Lebanon and Iran are protesting against the Iranian regime’s policies.
On Yemen, Jubeir said his country did not start the war, laying blame instead on the Iran-backed Houthi militias that have “committed crimes against the Yemeni people, launched 300 missiles and drones against Saudi Arabia, which has presented 14 billion dollars to develop this brotherly nation.”
On relations with Turkey, the minister said the ties still stand, adding, however, that Riyadh has reservations over Ankara’s meddling in the region.”

“In an overcrowded desert camp for families linked to the ISIS group in northeastern Syria, a French woman begged for another chance so she and her children could go home.
In the same settlement, two other French women were more tepid about the prospect of repatriation, with one saying she feared being separated from her child.
In the squalid camp of Al-Hol, the question of return has sparked a divide among the French wives of ISIS fighters.
“We’d like the French government to give us the chance to make it up to them,” 30-year-old Umm Mohammad told AFP in French.
“I think it’s better they repatriate us… We’ll be judged in France,” said the mother of four from Paris, dressed in a black robe and face veil.
After years of fighting IS ISIS Syria’s Kurds hold 4,000 women and 8,000 children from families linked to the extremist organization, mostly in Al-Hol.
Inside the camp, a veiled woman pushed a child in a pram, the bottom of her black robe caked in dry mud.
Two boys in jackets and rubber boots dragged a cart over a dirt field beyond rows of white tents, a little girl in a pink coat running alongside.
Umm Mohammad said that among her compatriots in Al-Hol’s section for foreigners, “a huge amount want to go home”.
“There’s another half who don’t want to go back, but that’s their problem,” said the widow, who says her French husband was killed in Hajin, once one of the last bastions of ISIS.
France has so far been reluctant to repatriate its nationals, allowing just a handful of children back on a case-by-case basis.

“Somalia has invited Turkey to explore for oil in its waters as it has done with Libya in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, on his flight back from a Libya summit in Berlin, Turkish TV Channel, NTV reported.
“There is an offer from Somalia. They are saying: ‘There is oil in our seas. You are carrying out these maritime operations with Libya in the East Mediterranean Sea, but you can also do them here.’ This is very important for us,” Erdogan said.
In November, Turkey signed a maritime delimitation deal with Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in a move that infuriated Greece and Cyprus.
Athens has been at odds with Ankara over offshore resources off the coast of the divided island of Cyprus.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey’s bilateral trade volume with Somalia was $144 million in 2017, $187 million in 2018 and $206 million in the first 10 months of 2019.

“Egyptian parliament has proposed a draft law criminalising child marriage, Egyptian newspaper, Youm7, reported yesterday.
The bill states that any perpetrator will be jailed and fined 5,000 – 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($317 – $633).
The proposal also includes a number of incentives for four-member families, which it describes as “exemplary families”. It also mentions rewarding families that have given birth to a child, at their discretion.
“The bill does not include clauses on birth control, but rather positive incentives in education and social support for ideal families,” chairman of the parliament’s Defence and National Security Committee, Kamal Amer, announced, explaining that the draft law is aimed at controlling the country’s continuing overpopulation problems.
Overpopulation is a major concern in Egypt. Officials state that it is a serious obstacle for the country’s economic development, and that it is also linked to national security.
In mid-2019, Egypt’s population reached 99 million, according to state-run Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).”
UK ‘Islamists’ get more jail time than far-right extremists, according to damning report

“”Islamists” receive three-times longer jail terms than their far-right extremist counterparts, highlighting judicial concerns over the perception of Muslims in the UK.
Analysis by the Henry Jackson Society, a right-wing foreign policy think tank based in London found that “Islamists” get on average almost three times longer sentences than far-right terrorists.
Out of 107 offenders from 2015 to 2019 who were convicted for “terrorist or hate crime offences” with an online component, Islamists received an average of 73.4 months compared to 24.5 month for far-right offenders.
This indicate a discrepancy in the way that governments view extremism from different backgrounds.
Blame for this discrepancy falls on the government, the report found, in failing to ban far-right extremist groups with the same voracity as it does for Islamist groups.
Nikita Malika, director of the think tank’s Centre for Radicalisation and Terrorism said: “The lack of far-right groups subject to proscription in the UK, when compared to Islamist groups, has left the authorities reliant on hate crime legislation rather than specific terrorist offenses which carry heftier sentences.”
“The government will need to keep this situation under review in a fast-moving online world, where offending causes real and significant harm,” she added.
Punishment to fit the crime?
The report found that sharing hateful content online can be punished in different ways, with severity depending on the nature of the crime, such as malicious communications and hate crimes, as well as if the individual is associated with a proscribed organisation.
Punishments tend to be less severe than those for crimes which fall under the Terrorism Acts, for example incitement, expressing religious or racial hatred and malicious communication.
Given its proliferation online and in terror attacks across the world in the past few years, the report gave much attention to the Islamic State group.
It found that of the terror-related charges, the largest organisational affiliation of offenders were from IS, 51.2 per cent of the cases, followed by no affiliation (anti-Muslim) at 12.1 percent, and then anti-semitic or Nazi-related content at 10.2 percent.
The rise of right-wing extremism is a problem not only in the UK but across the world.
Counter-terrorism police have named the far-right as the UK’s fastest-growing terror threat, with online-material found to be a motivator in planned terror attacks.
Malik said right-wing extremists frequently used “free speech” arguments, making them more difficult to critique, whereas Islamists often defend their freedom of religion.
Generation Identity for example, the terrorist group responsible for the Christchurch shooting and other terror attacks is predicated on a white genocide ideology it defends on the basis of protecting “European culture”.
“Companies are unable to take down a lot of this content because they have a list from the government of proscribed groups and these groups are simply not on it,” Malik added.
“There’s no consistency between the companies.”
This comes after the Commission for Countering Extremism called on creating a new category of extremist behaviour called “hateful” extremism, designed to standardise extremism across religions and ideologies whilst still maintaining freedom of speech.
‘Prevent’ the wrong way to go?
As right-wing extremism rises in the UK, the country’s counter-terrorism strategy Prevent is under increasing scrutiny in what critics are calling “racist” for “disproportionately targeting Muslim communities”.
“All research continues to point to the fact that the vast majority of its [Prevent’s] targets remain Muslim, despite the fact that they make up just over four percent of the British population,” activist Malia Bouattia wrote for The New Arab.
The Commission for Countering Terrorism (CCE) released a report late last year challenging extremism in England and Wales.
It was deemed by many to be recycling the same old anti-Muslim stereotypes with one dangerous addition – including “far-left” and “environmentalist” groups on the side of “hateful extremism”.
Bouattia wrote: “This broadening of the scope is now turning more obviously on the far-left, which for the CCE includes environmentalists, as well as anti-cuts, anti-racism, anti-imperialist activists.”
“While Palestine activism, anti-fracking campaigning, or criticism of British foreign policy have already been used as indicators of extremism by Prevent in the past, the report institutionalises it further.””

“The Abu Dhabi Misdemeanor Court on Monday looked into the case of 19 persons accused by Shaikh Waseem Yousef, former preacher and imam of the Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, of insulting and slandering him on social media.
During the hearing, 21 lawyers announced that they had volunteered to defend the accused, and demanded that they be given time to prepare defense notes.
For its part, the court decided to adjourn the hearing of the case of 16 defendants to January 23, and set Sunday, January 26, for a verdict against three defendants who failed to show up at the court.
The preacher has filed lawsuits against a group of citizens and residents, accusing them of publicly insulting and slandering him on social media (Twitter and Facebook).
The defendants say they were responding to Yousuf’s abusing of great Muslim scholars including Imam Mohammad Al Bukhari – one of the most distinguished scholars of Prophet’s (PBUH) Hadith in Islamic history. His book Sahih Al Bukhari, in which the Prophet’s (PBUH) words, actions, or habits were collected, is one of the greatest sources of the prophetic influence in history.
The Emirati preacher has sparked widespread controversy due to his statements about Al Bukhari, as he stressed that some of the hadiths published in this book may be doubtful.
Yousuf published a video clip of the hadith scholar Nasser Al Din Al Albani, saying that any book other than the Holy Quran was written by humans, in reference to the possibility of questioning the authenticity of some Hadiths attributed to the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).”
Women jailed for drunken behaviour, insulting police in Dubai

“Two Canadian women have been sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting and insulting a police officer after they failed to pay a taxi fare, a Dubai Court heard on Tuesday.
The women, aged 25 and 37, were reported to police by the taxi driver after refusing to pay in City Walk last July.
By the time the police arrived, the women had entered their building.
“I asked the building’s security guard for the women’s flat number and asked him to call them down to reception but they refused,” said the police officer.
The driver then went along with police to their apartment and he identified the pair.
“I identified myself as a police officer before asking for their IDs but they refused to present it to me,” added the officer. “I asked them why they didn’t pay the fare and they insulted me. One of them even threatened to call her country’s embassy.”
One of them handed over her ID to police but then shouted at the officer to return it.
“She stroked her body against mine and I kept stepping back to pull myself away from her,” said the officer.
He asked them to stop insulting him but they ignored him and allegedly started dancing and laughing at him.
The officer reported the incident to his director at the police station who dispatched female officers to apprehend the defendants.
Dubai Public Prosecution charged the defendants with assaulting and insulting the officer under the influence of alcohol.
The court ordered to deport the defendants after they had served their jail term.”
Police Arrest Sub-Saharan National for Fatal Assault in Casablanca

“Moroccan police in Casablanca have arrested a sub-Saharan national for his involvement in a fatal assault.
Security services arrested the suspect at the crime scene, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said on January 20.
A preliminary investigation found that the suspect had been arguing with the victim, who was a Moroccan national.
The victim was the owner of a house where the suspect rented a room, the DGSN statement added.
The suspect hit the victim in the head with a vase during the violent argument. The blow killed the victim immediately.
Police put the 28-year old suspect in custody for further investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident, the statement concluded.
According to the DGSN annual report, Moroccan police handled 639,116 criminal cases in 2019 and arrested 644,025 people, including 43,008 women and 23,746 minors.
The 2019 report found that fatal assault decreased by 11.2%, indecent assault by 10.2%, theft by 3.4%, armed robbery by 21%, and vehicle theft by 7.8%.”

Separately, in the Turkish capital Ankara, police arrested three Daesh/ISIS suspects in anti-terror operations.
Two of suspects, who are Syrians, were arrested after the duo were allegedly planning to send an electronic device to Daesh/ISIS members in the conflict zones.
Turkey recognized Daesh/ISIS as a terrorist group in 2013. Since then, the country has been attacked by Daesh/ISIS terrorists numerous times, including 10 suicide bombings, seven bombings, and four armed attacks which killed 315 people and injured hundreds.
In response, Turkey has launched military and police operations inside the country and abroad to prevent terrorist attacks.”

Prosecutors in the southern provinces of Adana and Antalya, western province of Balikesir and the capital Ankara issued warrants for 68 people, including some serving officials.
Adana-based anti-terror operations were launched simultaneously in five provinces, and 22 suspects were arrested.
Additionally, in Balikesir-based operations, carried out in eight provinces — including Istanbul and Ankara — 10 suspects were arrested.
Also, 20 suspects were arrested in an anti-terror operation in Antalya where 10 of the detained suspects were released after their statements.
Meanwhile, Ankara-based anti-terror operations were launched simultaneously against alleged FETO members who had infiltrated National Education Ministry branches in seven provinces — Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Kirsehir, Kayseri, Aksaray and Kahramanmaras — resulting in the arrest of seven of 16 suspects
The arrested suspects were active ministry staff and all were using ByLock — an encrypted smartphone application used by FETO members for communication.
The arrest warrants were issued after suspects were found to have communicated with members of the terror group.
FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.
Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.”

“Thirty-six civilians were killed on Monday in an attack on a market in Sanmatenga province, which is located in the north of the country, the Burkinabe government said on Tuesday. It added that the market in the Nagraogo village had been attacked and burned to the ground by armed militants.
“On Monday, January 20, a group of armed terrorists broke into a market in Nagraogo, where they killed 32 citizens and burned the market down. As they were retreating, they killed another four people near the village of Alamou. Apart from that, three people have been injured”, the government said in a communique, released by the RTB radio station. “These repeated attacks on innocent civilians call for real cooperation between defence and security forces”, the government added.
The President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore, called for two days of national mourning after the incident. Nobody has taken responsibility for the attack yet.
The government also extended its condolences to the families of the victims.
Previously, dozens of Burkinabe civilians and soldiers were killed during Islamist attacks in the eastern and northern parts of the country.
The northern part of Burkina Faso has been suffering from the activities of Islamist groups linked to al-Qaeda* and Daesh* terrorist organizations since 2016.
*Al-Qaeda and Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) are terrorist groups banned in Russia.”
