Turkey Muscles-In on the Israel-Greece-Cyprus EastMed Gas Pipeline Deal

Israel, Greece and Cyprus have signed an agreement for a pipeline project to ship natural gas from the Eastern Mediterranean region to Europe. The deal comes amid increasing tensions with Turkey as Ankara seeks to expand its claims over gas-rich areas of the Mediterranean Sea.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, along with their energy ministers, signed the so-called EastMed pipeline deal in Athens on January 2.
The 6-billion-euro ($6.6 billion) project envisages the construction of a 1,900-kilometer (1,180-mile) undersea pipeline that would carry up to 20 billion cubic meters of gas a year from Israeli and Cypriot waters to Crete and then on to the Greek mainland. From there, the gas would be transported to Italy and other countries in southeastern Europe.
Israel, Greece and Cyprus hope to reach a final investment decision by 2022 and have the pipeline completed by 2025. The EastMed project, which would bypass Turkey, could eventually supply up to 10% of Europe’s natural gas needs.
The signing of the EastMed pipeline project came a month after Turkey and Libya reached a bilateral agreement on maritime boundaries in the southeastern Mediterranean Sea. The deal, signed on November 27 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and the UN-backed leader of Libya, Fayez al Sarraj, attempts to redraw existing sea boundaries so that Libya ostensibly can claim exclusive rights over 39,000 square kilometers of maritime waters that belong to Greece.

With all the talk about Hunter Biden these days, one might get the impression that he is the only child of a politician to benefit from his parents’ position and the last name they inherited.
Before Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden, got his strange but lucrative deal to sit on the board of energy company Burisma Holdings in Ukraine to the tune of $50,000 a month, there was Chelsea Clinton, the only child of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She was similarly rewarded with jobs and board positions that had absolutely no relationship with that young woman’s interests, life, education or any perceived expertise.
All of this has racked up to what the New York Post reported back in 2015 was an estimated net worth of $15 million for the then-34-year-old. More recently, Barron’s, the finance newspaper, revealed that Chelsea Clinton has now reaped $9 million from a corporate board position. In 2011, while her mother was still secretary of state, she was appointed to IAC/Interactive, an Internet investment company. She receives an annual $50,000 retainer and $250,000 worth of restricted IAC stock units, according to Barron’s.
Ironically, and something the Clintons would be loathed to admit, they like most other American families benefitted from President Donald Trump’s leadership and correlating economic renaissance.
The Hill reported, “IAC stock has risen 89%, 50% and 36% in 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively, a far steeper rise in the broader stock market.”

“A Danish man who joined Daesh in Syria and who is consequently serving eight years imprisonment in Spain has revealed that he was working for Denmark’s intelligence services.
The 30-year-old Danish national, Ahmed Samsam, travelled to Syria “several” times in order to join the terror group under the authorisation and direction of Denmark’s Police Intelligence Service and Defence Intelligence Service, as was reported in the Danish newspaper Berlingske yesterday.
According to several sources who informed the paper, it was confirmed that Samsam was indeed recruited by the Danish intelligence services in December 2012 before being sent to Syria in February 2013.
These assignments, in which he received up to 20,000 Kroner ($2,975) per month as well as military training, continued all the way up until late 2015, after which he was arrested by Spanish authorities on the Costa del Sol in 2017.
“I wanted to help prevent a terrorist attack in Denmark. I have a family that uses public transport, which is at high risk of being hit by terror,” he told the paper.
Samsam has said that Danish authorities were well aware of his travels and assignments to Syria, and that they had guaranteed that he would not be punished upon his return.
The subsequent arrest of Samsam has therefore reportedly angered some in Denmark due to the country not having immediately informed Spain of his case.
Among those calling for Denmark to take action to return him is the member of parliament Karina Lorentzen Dehnhardt – part of the Socialist People’s Party – who urged for Samsam to be helped.
The case comes amid increasing debate over the transfer of imprisoned Daesh fighters back to their home countries which they left, with many reportedly being regretful of joining the group and wanting to return following the military defeat of the group over the past two years.
Both Turkey and US President Donald Trump have called on European nations to take back their fighters due to their responsibility towards their citizens, but they have long been concerned over the security risks of such a move, suspecting that there are former fighters who feign regret in order to carry out attacks within their home countries.”

“The UAE’s first nuclear power plant will start operating within a “few months” after repeated delays to meet safety and regulatory conditions, two energy officials said Monday.
The first of the four nuclear reactors at the Barakah plant had been due to come online in late 2017, but was delayed several times.
“Operation (of the first reactor) is scheduled to start within a few months,” Awaidha Al-Marar, chairman of Abu Dhabi’s department of energy, told reporters.
He said that the first nuclear fuel will be loaded within the next few months to prepare the reactor for operation.
It is set to be the first operational nuclear reactor in the Arab world.
Chairman and CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. Sultan al-Jaber confirmed that the plant is on course to be operational this year.
“To complement our clean energy portfolio, this year in 2020 we will become the first country in the region to deliver safe, commercial and peaceful nuclear power,” Jaber told the opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
Late last month, UAE newspaper, Al-Ittihad, had quoted officials at state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC) as saying the first reactor will become operational in the first quarter of this year.
ENEC had previously said that it expected the nuclear reactor to be online in late 2019 or early 2020.
The nuclear plant west of Abu Dhabi was built by a consortium led by the Korea Electric Power Corporation in a deal worth over $20 billion.
When fully operational, the four reactors should produce 5,600 megawatts of electricity, around 25 percent of the UAE’s needs, according to the energy ministry.
The UAE, a leading oil producer, says it wants 50 percent of its energy to be generated by clean sources by 2050.
ENEC said on its website it has been closely cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) to ensure that the nuclear programme conforms with international standards.
Since 2010, the UAE has welcomed more than 40 international missions and reviews from the IAEA and WANO, highlighting its commitment to transparency, ENEC said.”

“France and five West African states agreed on Monday to combine their military forces under one command structure to fight a growing Islamist militancy in the Sahel region, with Paris committing an extra 220 troops.
French President Emmanuel Macron had called the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger and Mauritania, known as the G5, to the southwestern French town of Pau to discuss the battle against insurgents in the Sahel, an arid region just below the Sahara desert.
With growing anti-French sentiment in the five countries over Paris’ handling of an insurgency by Islamist militants that has seen hundreds of their soldiers killed in recent weeks, Macron had warned that he could withdraw French troops without a clear political commitment from them.
France, the former colonial power, has 4,500 troops in Mali and the wider Sahel, but security has been progressively worsening. Macron said the situation had now been clarified.
Militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have strengthened their foothold, making large swathes of territory ungovernable and stoking ethnic violence, especially in Mali and Burkina Faso.
“Today, more than ever, the fact is that the results, despite the effort, are below the expectations of the population,” Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Kabore told a joint news conference. “It’s for this reason that we have decided to review the deployment and redefine the pillars for our future action.”
The new structure, named Coalition for the Sahel, brings the G5 states, French forces and any future troops under a single command. It aims to enable joint operations, greater intelligence-sharing and quicker response time in particular for French forces in the border areas linking Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, where the insurgency is at its worst.
CONCERNS OVER UNITED STATES PRESENCE
Criticised in France for allowing French troops to get bogged down and facing growing hostility in West Africa for failing to restore stability, Macron has become increasingly frustrated, but the French leader appeared satisfied with Monday’s results.
Another 220 French troops will be sent to give fresh momentum to the fight with more European special forces expected to join in the coming months, he said.
“The priority is Islamic State in the Grand Sahara. … It is our priority because it is the most dangerous,” Macron said. “We have no choice, we need results.”
French troops were hailed as heroes in 2013 when their intervention helped prevent an Islamist militant push to the Malian capital, Bamako.
But their standing has slipped as the security situation deteriorated. At least 89 local soldiers were killed in a suspected jihadist attack on an army base in Niger this weekend, four security sources said.
Pau, the location of the summit, is home to a helicopter regiment which saw several of its French soldiers killed in a helicopter collision in Mali in November.
Macron said he was also worried of a possible withdrawal by the United States military in the area. It provides intelligence, logistical and drone support for France’s forces. There have been mixed signals from Washington that it could pull out.
“If the Americans were to decide to leave Africa it would be really bad news for us,” Macron said. “I hope to be able to convince President (Donald) Trump that the fight against terrorism also plays out in this region.””

According to a statement issued by the ACA on Monday, the gang was involved in counterfeiting government documents and luring foreign patients who needed to undergo kidney transplant surgeries, in violation of Law No. 5 For 2010 regarding the regulation of human organ transplantation.

Turkish gendarmerie forces held 962 of migrants in the northwestern Edirne province, which borders Greece and Bulgaria.
According to local sources in Edirne, Greece has stepped up efforts to send irregular migrants to Turkey in violation of the Geneva Conventions, the European Convention on Human Rights and the UN Convention Against Torture.
In the coastal western cities of Mugla, Canakkale, Izmir and Aydin, the Turkish Coast Guard and gendarmerie forces rounded up more than 1,260 migrants.
In the northwestern provinces of Kirklareli, Yalova and Tekirdag, a total of 98 migrants were held by gendarmerie forces.
Also, 84 irregular migrants, sailing from Canakkale, were held by the cost guard.
A total of 122 irregular migrants were held in the central Nigde, eastern Elazig and Van, and southeastern Kilis provinces.
The migrants included Pakistani, Congolese, Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian, Afghan, Moroccan, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Somali, Yemeni, Palestinian, Malian, Gabonese, Senegalese, Burundian, Cameroonian, Angolan, Libyan, Lebanese and South African nationals.
All of the migrants held during the week were either taken to hospitals for medical treatment or transferred to provincial migration offices.
Turkey has been a key transit point for irregular migrants aiming to cross to Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.”

“Police in Zurich will be forced to release the nationalities and potentially the migration background of offenders, pursuant to a Swiss government initiative.
The initiative was launched by the Swiss government on Monday, which would require Zurich police to name not only the nationality of offenders but also their age and gender.
Similar information must be released concerning victims of crime, provided there is no way that the released information would allow them to be identified.
As reported in Swiss daily 20 Minutes, the government initiative was launched as a counter-proposal to an initiative from the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP).
This proposal would have required the police to not only release the above information, but also to make public the ethnicity of perpetrators, i.e. whether or not they had a migrant background.
After the SVP submitted their initiative, the government launched its own – with the one major difference being that the ethnicity/background requirement was removed.
Pursuant to Swiss law, it is now up to the SVP as to whether or not it withdraws its initiative.
If the SVP proposal is withdrawn, the government initiative will stand. If not, the people of Zurich will need to vote on the SVP initiative and the counter-proposal.
The initiative was launched in response to a shift in the city’s policy whereby the nationality as well as other personal characteristics of perpetrators of crime would not be named.
The SVP collected just under 10,000 signatures to support its initiative, saying that refusing to release information surrounding a person’s background amounted to “censorship”.
Only 6,000 signatures were required to have the initiative placed before the Zurich parliament, indicating the popularity of the proposal.
Indeed, across Switzerland it is becoming more common for police to provide personal details of criminal perpetrators – particularly with regard to nationality.
As reported in 20 Minutes, the SVP has been pressuring cantons across the country to release identifying information on accused perpetrators wherever possible.”
Stockholm blast ‘one of the most powerful explosions’ in the capital

“UPDATED: Police are investigating after a loud explosion damaged a building in a posh central Stockholm area in the early hours of Monday.
The blast happened at 1am at the street Gyllenstiernsgatan in the Östermalm area of the Swedish capital, but could be heard several kilometres away. It damaged the building and parked cars, with broken glass and other debris covering the area.
Erik Widstrand, head of the Stockholm City policing area, told a press conference at 1pm that the incident was being investigated as so-called “devastation endangering the public” but that no terrorism was suspected.
“It was one of the most powerful explosions we have had in this region,” he said.
The Local’s reporter Tim Marringa was at the scene shortly before noon.
“The street is closed off with tape to keep curious local residents at a distance. The damage is clearly visible from behind the tape, and cars in front of the building were badly damaged,” he said.
“The police are keeping an eye on things while workers are replacing the broken windows.”
A police spokesperson told the TT news agency early on Monday that they believed “the explosion happened in or at the building, but exactly where is still unclear. There are damaged cars nearby, but the explosion probably didn’t happen in them”.
TT photographer Anders Wiklund was at the scene on Monday morning and described the blast as “an extremely powerful explosion that was heard across all of Stockholm”.
Ambulances and fire crews were at the scene, but there were no reports of injuries. Residents evacuated the building and were able to spend the night and get crisis support at a local school.
One resident told TT she was woken in the night by “an enormous blast” that shook her windows, and went to her balcony to see what had happened.
“There were fire engines already on the way, and then lots of police and ambulances came. We saw a large piece of metal, which may have been a door or part of a car, lying on the street. In the street lights, the broken glass was glittering and there was a lot of metal next to the cars, so we thought it must have been a car bomb that exploded,” she said.
She said that she was particularly concerned about the incident because of the school located in the same building, adding: “If it had happened a few hours later it could have been a total catastrophe.”
The school informed parents that it would be open as normal on Monday, but that the main entrance would be closed off due to police cordons.
The police bomb squad was set to examine the scene on Monday. Police opened an investigation into so-called ‘devastation endangering the public’, but at 7am it was still unclear what had caused the explosion.
Just two hours after the Östermalm blast, at around 3am, police were called to a loud explosion in the university town of Uppsala, about an hour north of Stockholm, damaging a building and vehicles parked nearby.
Police said they suspected “some kind of explosive charge had detonated” at Nedre slottsgatan in the town centre, but there were no reports of injuries.
There were no immediate indications that the two explosions were linked.”

Officials with Canada’s Transportation Safety Board said on Monday that the investigation they are taking part in regarding the Iran plane crash is about finding out why the crash happened, not about assigning blame or criminality.
They also said two TSB officials have obtained visas and are travelling with other consular members to Tehran and they would be sending experts in data recorder analysis once they confirm where and when that task would take place.

Hassan Diab and his family are suing the federal government over the role Canada played in his extradition to France and years of imprisonment in a French jail — the results of a terrorism probe that ultimately fell apart due to weak evidence.
In a notice of action filed with the Ontario Superior Court, Diab, his wife Rania Tfaily and their two young children seek $90 million in damages.
Diab, a 66-year-old Ottawa university lecturer, was accused by French authorities of involvement in a 1980 bombing outside a Paris synagogue that killed four people and injured more than 40.
Diab was arrested by RCMP in November 2008 and placed under strict bail conditions until he was extradited to France in 2014.
Diab was never charged — but he spent more than three years in near-solitary confinement while France investigated his alleged involvement in the terror attack.
Negligence, deceit
The lawsuit accuses the government, Department of Justice lawyers and Rob Nicholson, who served as justice minister under then-prime minister Stephen Harper, of negligence, malicious prosecution, deceit and abuse of process.
Diab and his family are not commenting on the lawsuit. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice would only say officials are “looking into this matter.”
The legal action represents an abrupt change of strategy for Diab and his family, who have said all along they didn’t want financial compensation. Their longstanding public demands have been for a judge-led public inquiry into Diab’s case and reform of Canada’s extradition law.
The tipping point seems to be the findings of an department-ordered review of Diab’s case by former deputy attorney general of Ontario Murray Segal.
Segal concluded government lawyers acted ethically and followed proper procedures in extraditing him to France.
Diab accused the federal government of perpetrating a “whitewash” by hiring Segal to perform the review instead of appointing a judge to hold a public inquiry with full power to subpoena evidence and cross-examine witnesses.
‘Damage control’
Diab boycotted this review, arguing its scope was too narrow and it appeared to be nothing more than a “concerted damage-control effort.”
“It’s a one-sided report. Its purpose is not to provide accountability. Its purpose is to absolve the Department of Justice of any accountability, and to shield senior officials at the department of any accountability,” Diab said last July.
In the notice of claim, Diab seeks $50 million in compensation for himself for malicious prosecution, breaches of his charter rights and punitive damages.
His wife and their two young children seek a total of $40 million for intentional infliction of emotional distress, breaches of charter rights and punitive damages.
Numerous problems with France’s case against Diab were evident during the extradition hearings, while others were revealed by CBC News after Diab returned to Canada.
‘A weak case’
The Ontario judge who ordered Diab’s extradition wrote that France had presented “a weak case; the prospects of conviction in the context of a fair trial seem unlikely.”
That proved to be the case. Diab was returned to Canada in January 2018 after French judges dropped his case due to a lack of evidence. French prosecutors are appealing Diab’s release.
CBC News later revealed that Department of Justice lawyers helped France strengthen its evidence when the case against Diab appeared to be falling apart.
Fingerprint analysis conducted by Canadian officials showed that Diab’s prints did not match prints thought to belong to the suspected bomber. Diab’s lawyers say this information was never shared with the extradition judge — denying the defence key evidence of his innocence.
Documents obtained by CBC News also showed that France was aware of — and failed to disclose — fingerprint evidence that helped to clear Diab of involvement in the terrorist attack when it made its formal extradition request to Canada.
“My suffering and that of my family was prolonged by senior officials at the Department of Justice,” Diab said last July. “I trusted the government’s promise that what happened to me would never happen to anyone else.”

Hassan Diab, family launch $90M lawsuit against government over extradition on terror charge
Hassan Diab, the Ottawa university professor who was extradited to France and spent three years in a French prison accused of a terrorist bombing until the case against him collapsed, is suing the Canadian government for $90 million.
A notice of action was filed in court Friday and claims damages for “negligence, negligent investigation, malicious prosecution, misfeasance in public office, spoliation of evidence, deceit, abuse of process, and intentional affliction of emotional distress.”
The notice also alleges Canada’s attorney general breached Diab’s Charter rights and asks for”punitive and exemplary damages.”
The notice names Diab, his wife, Rania Tfaily, and the couple’s two children, ages 5 and 7, as plaintiffs, claiming an abuse of process and the “intentional infliction of emotional distress.”
“Hassan has suffered damages as a result of the Defendants’ negligence and/or malicious actions, and breaches of the Charter arising from their conduct during the extradition proceedings, including the concealment of exculpatory evidence,” the suit claims.
The civil suit seeks a total of $50 million for Diab and a further $40 million for Tfaily and the children.
None of the allegation has been proven in court.
Diab was arrested in Canada on Nov. 13, 2008, at the request of France, which considered him a suspect in a 1980 bombing of a Paris synagogue that killed four people and injured 40 more.
After a long extradition hearing, during which Diab was subject to restrictive bail conditions, he was extradited to France in November 2014. He spent three years in jail and was held in solitary confinement in a kitchen-sized cell in the Fleury-Mérogis prison in Paris.
He was released in January 2018 after the chief investigating judge ruled the evidence against him was flawed and that there was convincing evidence that Diab was in Beirut at the time of the Paris bombing.
Diab returned to Canada a few days later, having lost 40 pounds during his incarceration. He had also missed the birth of his son, who was born two months after his extradition.
The notice of action gives no details of the allegations but serves to inform the government of a pending legal action. It lists as defendants the Attorney General of Canada, along with Rob Nicholson — justice minister and attorney general from 2007 to 2013 in the Conservative government of Stephen Harper — and five other Justice Department or Crown lawyers.
Diab was born in Lebanon but became a Canadian citizen in 1993. He was a professor of sociology at Carleton University at the time of his arrest but lost his job soon after.
Diab’s legal action comes after external review of his case concluded that federal lawyers had acted ethically and lawfully in ordering his extradition. The review was conducted by Murray Segal, a former deputy attorney general for Ontario, and released last summer. It made 14 recommendations to improve Canada’s extradition process but found criticism about how the Justice Department had handled the case had no merit.
Federal lawyers “acted in a manner that was ethical and consistent” with the law and federal policies, Segal said.
Diab did not take part in the review, saying at the time he suspected it would be a “whitewash” of the government’s actions. At a news conference after the report’s release, he said his legal ordeal tarnished his reputation, damaged his health and wiped out his life savings. He blamed all of it on the conduct of the Justice Department.
“Its purpose is not to provide transparency or accountability or to prevent future miscarriages of justice, rather its purpose is to absolve the Department of Justice from any accountability and to shield senior officials at the department from further scrutiny,” he said at the time.
He mused at the time about bringing a civil suit against the government for its actions.
The government now has 20 days to respond to Diab’s notice of action.
The Ottawa law firm Borden Ladner Gervais is representing Diab and his family in the civil suit. This newspaper reached out to Diab Monday night but had not heard back by deadline.
