Libya violence: 28 people killed in attack on military school in Tripoli
At least 28 people were killed in an attack on a military academy in the Libyan capital on Saturday, the government said.
Tripoli, which is under the control of the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), is facing an offensive by military commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) that began in April.
There has been an increase in airstrikes and shelling around Tripoli in recent weeks, with fears that fighting could escalate further after Turkey’s parliament voted to allow a troop deployment in support of the GNA.
Forces allied with the GNA described Saturday’s attack on the military camp at Al-Hadhba as “an aerial bombing” launched by their eastern rivals. An LNA spokesman denied involvement.
Hamid bin Omar, GNA’s Health Minister, told Reuters that the number of dead and wounded was still rising. A spokesman for Tripoli’s ambulance service said that some body parts could not be immediately counted by forensic experts.
Earlier, the ambulance service appealed for a temporary ceasefire to allow its members to retrieve the bodies of five civilians killed on As Sidra Road, an area south of central Tripoli, and evacuate families living in there.
Emergency teams withdrew after coming under fire while trying to access the area on Saturday, it added.
An increase in airstrikes and shelling in and around Tripoli has caused the deaths of at least 11 civilians since early December and shut down health facilities and schools, the UN mission in Libya said on Friday.
Rockets and shelling also shut down Tripoli’s only functioning airport on Friday.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the Taliban said that the army had suffered heavy casualties as a consequence of the attack.
Neither the security source, nor the police chief spokesman, provided details of military personnel killed in Sunday’s clash.
On 31 December sources stated that the Taliban wishes to agree to an unofficial ceasefire with government forces in order to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid. A ceasefire is also seen to be a means of securing the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

“A MAN in his thirties has been stabbed to death in Finsbury Park in what is the first murder of 2020 in London.
Police raced to the North London neighbourhood at 6.50pm after reports of a stabbing and found the man with stab injuries. London Ambulance also attended the scene but the victim was pronounced dead at 7.42pm. No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.
There were 147 murders in London last year.
More than half of these were stabbings.
This is the highest level recorded since the 154 deaths since 2008.

The 2018 death toll was 16 lower than 2019.
Of the deaths 25 were teenagers.

Kenyan authorities said the pre-dawn attack destroyed US aircraft and vehicles, and at least four attackers were killed.
It was not yet clear whether any US or Kenyan forces were killed. A US Africa Command statement said ‘an accountability of personnel assessment is underway’.
The midday statement said the Manda Bay airfield was ‘still in the process of being fully secured’.
The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab, based in nearby Somalia, claimed responsibility and asserted that ‘intense’ combat with US forces continued.
The US statement called the al-Shabab claims exaggerated and said US and Kenyan forces repelled the attack.

Lamu county commissioner Irungu Macharia said that five suspects were arrested and were being interrogated.
An internal Kenyan police report seen by the AP said two fixed-wing aircraft, a US Cessna and a Kenyan one, were destroyed along with two US helicopters and multiple US vehicles at the Manda Bay military airstrip.
The report said explosions were heard at around 5.30am from the direction of the airstrip. The scene, now secured, indicated that al-Shabab likely entered ‘to conduct targeted attacks,’ the report said.
According to the US military, ‘initial reports reflect damage to infrastructure and equipment’. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the airstrip was closed for all operations.
Al-Shabab’s statement included photos of blazing aircraft it asserted were from the attack. A second al-Shabab claim issued hours later asserted that ‘ïntense close-quarters combat’ against US forces continued.
The military’s Camp Simba in Lamu county, established more than a decade ago, has under 100 US personnel, according to Pentagon figures.
US forces at the Manda Bay airfield train and give counter-terror support to East African partners, according to the military.
A US flag-raising at the camp in August signaled its change ‘from tactical to enduring operations,’ the Air Force said at the time.
According to another internal Kenyan police report, dated Friday, a villager that day said he had spotted 11 suspected al-Shabab members entering Lamu’s Boni forest, which the extremists have used as a hideout. The report said Kenyan authorities did not find them.
Al-Shabab has launched a number of attacks inside Kenya, including against civilian targets such as buses, schools and shopping malls.
The group has been the target of a growing number of US airstrikes inside Somalia during President Donald Trump´s administration.
The latest attack comes just over a week after an al-Shabab truck bomb in Somalia’s capital killed at least 79 people and US airstrikes killed seven al-Shabab fighters in response.
Last year al-Shabab attacked a US military base inside Somalia that is used to launch drone strikes.
The extremist group also has carried out multiple attacks against Kenyan troops in the past in retaliation for Kenya sending troops to Somalia to fight it.
This attack marks a significant escalation of al-Shabab’s campaign of attacks inside Kenya, said analyst Andrew Franklin, a former US Marine and longtime Kenya resident.
‘Launching a deliberate assault of this type against a well-defended permanent base occupied by (Kenya Defence Forces), contractors and US military personnel required a great deal of planning, rehearsals, logistics and operational capability,’ he said. P

“The district court of Leipzig has ordered warrants for the arrest of four far-left extremists accused of assaulting police officers and engaging in bodily harm on New Year’s Eve.
The four extremists, aged 27, 29, 30 and 32-years-old, were taken before a judge earlier this week after being arrested in connection with violent riots in the Connewitzer Kreuz area, a noted far-left stronghold in the city, German tabloid Bild reports.
The main arrest warrant was issued against a 27-year-old extremist who is accused of assaulting several law enforcement officials and the other three are being held in custody because none of them has fixed addresses and police say they could flee the area.
The State Criminal Police Office (LKA) and its specialized far-left extremism division (LinX) say they are still investigating the serious assault on a police officer by an unknown individual. It is being treated as an attempted murder case.
The 38-year-old officer who was the victim in the attack was forced to undergo surgery at a local hospital on New Year’s Eve. Police described the operation as being an emergency, but some hospital staff have countered the claim, stating that the surgery was on the officer’s ear and was not life-threatening.
Leipzig police chief Torsten Schultze told the tabloid he thought the semantic debate of whether the operation was an emergency or not was “disgraceful.”
“An official was seriously injured and had to be operated on. That’s bad enough,” he said.
Leipzig has become a hub of far-left Antifa extremism in recent months with the city seeing a total of 357 attacks in 2019. One, an arson attack, caused over ten million euros’ worth of damages.

“Authorities in Sweden have been accused of mislabelling explosions and bombings and classifying incidents as “damage” in order to distort the true extent of explosions across the country.
Swedish Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson took to Twitter on Thursday to state that bombings in the multicultural city of Malmö had decreased by 40 per cent in the last two years despite other statistics showing a large rise in bombings across the country.
But according to the alternative news website Samhallsnytt, several explosive incidents in Malmö over 2019 were classified by police as injuries or simply as damage.
In January, an explosive that was detonated between two taxis in the city was declared to be “damage,” while in April an explosion at a school was logged as an “injury.”
An explosion at a residential building in June was also considered an “injury.” Broadcaster SVT reported that the explosion was not counted on their list of 2019 explosions because the damage caused by the blast was too minor.
Some Swedes reacted to Johansson’s Tweet with scepticism, including user Pater Ohman who accused Johansson of selecting a small portion of statistics on purpose rather than addressing the national trend.
He said the minister was sweeping the situation “under the carpet.”
The accusations of manipulating statistics come only weeks after employees of the Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Brå) claimed they had been pressured by members of management to manipulate crime figures for political reasons.
“If results were not liked, then there was censorship, organisation of results, dimming of results, and highlighting other parts of a study that were not as sensitive or could show a positive result,” an employee told researchers at Linköping University.
In 2016 soon after the height of the 2015 migrant crisis, Varg Gyllandar of the Stockholm Police claimed that officers practised a form of self-censorship when it came to migrant sex attacks at music festivals.
“We didn’t cover up, of course we didn’t. But we didn’t tell. And there are so many things we don’t tell because we have so much information, so many things going on,” Gyllandar revealed.
“Well, I think we all carry a bit of self-censorship; that we are afraid of discussing these question because you can appear like a racist. This is a cultural thing for us. We do go there… that’s maybe a problem,” he added.”
US military confirms terror attack on US base in Kenya
U.S. military acknowledges al-Shabab attack on U.S. base in Kenya.
The U.S. military has confirmed that there has been a terror attack on a military base in Kenya that houses some U.S. military personnel. The Somali terror group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack that Kenyan authorities said had been repelled with four militants killed in the fighting.
“U.S. Africa Command acknowledges there was an attack at Manda Bay Airfield, Kenya and is monitoring the situation,” said U.S Army Maj. Gen. William Gayler in a statement. “Al-Shabab resorts to lies, coercion, and the exertion of force to bolster their reputation to create false headlines …It is important to counter al-Shabab where they stand to prevent the spread of this cancer.”
The official did not provide information about any potential casualties at the Kenyan military base that has housed U.S. military personnel for years. It is unclear how many American personnel are stationed at the base that has reportedly been a site for U.S. special operations forces operating in Somalia.

White House expects Iranian response in coming weeks
As tensions increase, the White House said it is expecting Iran to retaliate sooner rather than later. The Trump administration has reportedly notified Congress that it’s anticipating Iran to respond to the killing of one of its top leaders in the coming weeks.
Officials said Iran’s possible targets could include Iranian proxy actors such as Hezbollah, U.S. allies in the Middle East and U.S. bases in the region.
President Trump issued a warning to the country on Saturday, saying Iran “will be hit very fast and very hard” if it attacks Americans or U.S. assets.

Virginia weighs releasing middle-aged murderers

Virginia’s governor wants to make most murderers eligible for parole when they reach age 50. You’d never know that from reading the news stories written by liberal reporters. They say Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam wants to help “elderly” inmates.
But that’s contradicted by the governor’s own web site. It says that under his plan, “An individual would be eligible for consideration of parole if they are at least 50 years old and have served 20 years, or are 55 years old and have served 15 years.” A person who is 50 years old or 55 years old is middle-aged, not elderly. Most definitions put middle age as from 45 to 65, and none define people under age 60 as elderly.
But liberal-leaning press entities like the Associated Press didn’t report the fact that Northam’s proposal could result in the release of middle-aged murderers, or people at age 50 or 55. The Associated Press claimed the governor “wants to extend parole eligibility for prisoners who are elderly.” And the Daily Press reported that “Northam wants to give the state parole board more authority to grant early release from prison when inmates are elderly.”

USA: First troops deployed to Middle East from Fort Bragg amid rising tensions
On Sunday, October 8th, 2018, Sara Anne Widholm, 75, was walking the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor, Ontario. She walked the Trail after church on Sundays and picked up litter along the way.
She was found unconscious by other walkers. She had multiple brain hemorrhages, a blood clot on the surface of her brain, extensive skull fractures, fractured vertebrae in her neck, lacerated scalp, badly bruised face, eyes so badly bruised they were swollen shut. She remained unconscious and died in the hospital 14 months later. Dr. Balraj Jhawar described the assault as the worst he had ever seen. The police described the assault as an unprovoked, random act of violence.
Four weeks later, Sara’s husband, Alfred, a missionary, died suddenly at 83.
The trial of Hubibullah Ahmadi, 21, charged with second-degree was set for January of 2019. The new trial date is set for March 16, 2020, in the Chatham Court house. The trial date was moved from the Windsor Courthouse, where the trial was scheduled to take place, due to lack of space on the Court calendar. according to the Jordan Ruling of 2016, a trial must be held within a 30-month period from arrest and charges being brought until final decision at completion of trial, otherwise defence attorneys can call for charges to be dismissed. Date in this case is April, 2020, so by setting the trial date so close to the Jordan Date, maybe someone in the Canadian Court system is hoping that this case will somehow “go away”……
Sara’s son, Eric, of Georgia, said, “We are trusting the Crown to do due diligence in this matter and show the community of Windsor and all Canadians that they are looking out for the best interest of their citizens and to be strong and faithful advocates for justice and protection of the innocent.”

The red flag is no more (or less) serious than their rhetoric of revenge is.
But they know that naive Westerners are frightened by things like this, hence the Daily Express calling it “terrifying.”

In the past few years, this rally would follow the New Year’s speech by the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This year, and because the leader did not make the speech, the rally is instead held in support of the results of the late December big party meeting, which were reported on the first of January by state media.

?According to Metz public prosecutor Christian Mercuri, the man has been on the police radar due to his ‘radicalisation and personality disorder’. Mercuri said he was in touch with terrorism prosecutors to determine whether the act should be treated as terror-related.
This is the second incident in France over the past several days involving a knife attacker.
On Friday, one man died, and two women were wounded after a man went on a stabbing rampage in Villejuif, south of Paris. The man reportedly wore traditional North African clothes and shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the attack. The police shot the assailant dead.
The assault is being treated as a terror attack by the police. The attacker was also known to have suffered from mental illness.”

Iran will respond to the killing of General Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike by targeting “military sites”, an advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s said on Sunday.
While speaking to CNN former Iranian defence minister Hossein Dehghan said: “The response for sure will be military and against military sites”.

He is no politician he has no mental stability,” Dehghan told CNN, citing United Nations Resolution 2347, which makes illegal the unlawful destruction of cultural heritage under international, which the US itself is a signatory to since 2017.
Dehghan warned that if Trump were to carry out his threat: “for sure no American military staff, no American political center, no American military base, no American vessel will be safe. And they are accessible to us.”
While speaking to ABC on Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo softened the presidents remarks claiming that the US would “act lawfully”.
The attack which killed Soleimani in Baghdad was approved by Trump in Mar-a-Lago last Thursday.
The operation took place in Baghdad in the early hours of Friday as Soleimani and as well as Iraqi officials of Iranian-backed militias were leaving Baghdad airport.
Several missiles were launched from a drone killing at least seven people including Soleimani and his comrades.
Iran has pledged to respond to the attack, vowing “harsh vengeance” against the US for the liquidation of one of their top commanders and beloved officials.
“Harsh vengeance awaits the criminals that got his and other martyrs’ blood on their evil hands in last night’s incident”, said Iran’s supreme leader in a statement following the event on Friday.
US officials claim that it was a preemptive strike in response to planned attacks by Soleimani on American targets but have yet to provide any details.
The strike followed a storming of the UN embassy in Iraqi after US airstrikes were launched against Iranian-backed militia groups in Iran which killed 25 people.”

“The Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar has announced a “decisive battle” for Tripoli. The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has responded by asking Turkey to provide military support. Haftar, in turn, declared a general mobilization of his forces to resist foreign invasion.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that the Turkish forces have embarked on the military mission to Libya for “coordination and stability”.
“Our troops are gradually departing to Libya. They will coordinate [their action with the GNA] there. Our goal is to support the legitimate government”, Erdogan said, cited by CNN Turk, adding that “the goal is to support a legitimate government. This will not hurt our agreement. The task of the Turkish military there is to ensure a ceasefire, not to fight. On the other hand, by supporting a legitimate government, prevent a humanitarian catastrophe”.
The Turkish parliament has green-lighted sending its troops to Libyan allies, who have been under siege since April last year by the eastern-based army of Khalifa Haftar. Turkish move reportedly was prompted foremost by a historic moment – Libya was a part of the vast Ottoman Empire until 1911.
Critics have repeatedly accused Erdogan of seeking to reclaim the territories that were controlled by the Ottoman Empire before its defeat and dissolution in the wake of World War I.
Libya has been in state of a civil war since its longtime leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was overthrown in 2011. Since then, political power in the country has been split between two rival governments: the Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress. Following the signing of a UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement in December 2015, a Government of National Accord has been established in the county and started its work in late March 2016.
Media reports have alleged, citing sources, that the Trump administration was mulling an ambitious plan to divide Libya into three areas based on three old Ottoman provinces: Cyrenaica in the east, Tripolitania in the north-west and Fezzan in the south-west.

Iran announced on Sunday in a statement that it was discontinuing its remaining obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal.
“By taking the fifth step in reducing its obligations, Iran is abandoning the last key practical limitation under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which is dealing with the number of centrifuges,” the government’s statement said.
The announcement comes after another Iranian official said that the country would consider taking even tougher steps over the killing of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike on Friday.
Iran will continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and is ready to return to fulfilling its obligations if sanctions against the country are lifted, the statement added…”

“IRANIAN intelligence officers tried to lure a UK- based journalist to Turkey in order to kidnap her after she reported on violent clashes that have rocked the Islamic country.
The plan, which failed, was part of an ongoing campaign of terror and harassment aimed at journalists working for Iran International, an independent 24-hour news channel based in London.
The news emergeges as tensions between Iran and the West reach crisis point following the assassination of Maj Gen Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force and architect of Iran’s foreign policy in the Middle East.
A dozen high profile presenters and journalists at the Persian language broadcaster have been contacted by Iran’s notorious Ministry of Intelligence and National Security with threats that they will be snatched off London’s streets unless they leave their jobs.
Some have been bombarded with menacing phone calls through the night, while others have had family members hauled into its Tehran headquarters in an attempt to persuade journalists to quit the channel, which has been broadcasting thousands of submitted videos showing Iran’s security forces “shooting to kill” in a bid to quell widespread protests.
In one case, Iranian intelligence officers tried to lay an ambush, using a journalist’s brother to lure a presenter to Turkey where they planned to bundle her into a car and drive her across the border.
The journalist did not go.
Another was forced to miss her father’s funeral for fear of being arrested if she set foot in Iran.
Last night senior politicians here demanded that Iran’s ambassador to London, Hamid Baeidinejad, be formally summoned by Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab over controversial remarks he made on Twitter alleging the journalists were “agents and mercenaries of foreign services, paid by the country’s enemies and acting against the national interest.”
But Iran’s attempts to use communications regulator Ofcom to silence the channel have failed.
Problems began four weeks ago when one of the channel’s main anchors received a chilling phone call following the airing of videos sent by ordinary Iranians showing the brutal suppression of protests.
“She was very distressed,” said Iran International editor Sadeq Saba. “She told me her father and mother were phoned and ordered to go to the offices of the intelligence ministry. Her brother was taken off the street.
“Once there, officials told them to call her in London and tell her she must quit working for Iran International within 24 hours.
“If they she didn’t leave, they said they knew her address and had the capability of taking her from London and bringing her back to Tehran by force.
“Two hours later another colleague came, the day after two or three more. “Within five days 12 colleagues had come to me to tell me about the harassment of families. They’re all London based. Many are UK citizens.
“The message was the same; quit or we will arrest your families and bring you back by force. They threatened to confiscate relatives’ passports, even threatened their jobs.
“If families failed to comply, they said, they had other means at their disposal to persuade them.”
He added: “This is psychological torture. Iran’s intelligence ministry is a notorious organisation. If somebody calls you from there, you start to tremble.”
Police were informed, and the news outlet is having further discussions with counter-terror specialists
“The regime has killed more than a hundred dissidents across Europe since 1980, including the former PM Shapour Bakhtiar.
“Now it is threatening to send terror to London against journalists.
“They tell us they know where we live, where our children go to school, and that they can bring us back whenever they want.
“They have supporters in Britain’s Iranian community, including members of militant groups, which they could use for violent purposes.
“We suspect they have paid informants everywhere. My assumption is when I speak to colleagues openly, here, Iranian intelligence hears what I say.”
Managers employed a private security company and provided counsellors.
“These journalists are feeling guilty about the consequences of their job on their families back home,” said Saba.
The threats are part of a wider campaign of terror which has also targeted journalists working for BBC Persia Service, Voice of America and Radio Farda (Radio Free Europe).
Protests have been growing since January, when it emerged the regime was spending around $1bn a year on supporting militant groups abroad, while Iranians suffered under economic sanctions. Sanctions were increased later under US President Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy.
But demonstrations became more serious in November when the Government announced a 200 percent hike in fuel prices.
Within days rioting had spread to 100 cities.
“The reason why they’re intimidating to us in London is because they know things will only get worse. They want to cut off any independent reporting,” said Saba.
‘If the regime felt secure, it wouldn’t have acted as it did during recent protests.
“Ten years ago, there was the Green Movement, people were supporting one side of the regime against another – they supported so-called reformers.
“But now they don’t want the regime at all, it’s a sea change in the public’s perception. They want the whole regime to go.
“The regime knows this. From day one, security forces were shooting to kill.
“It has failed ideologically, economically and politically. They’re fighting for survival,” said Saba.
Last week the regime cut off Iran’s internet and mobile phone services in a bid to prevent more reporting.
“We have twenty million viewers using satellite channels or the internet – most in Iran,” said Saba.
“They’ve try to block us in the past, but they don’t succeed.”
He added: “We are not an opposition channel. We simply report the facts. “And we will not allow them to change our editorial policy.”
Renowned human rights lawyer Mark Stephens – who is also representing the family of Harry Dunn, killed by US diplomat’s wife Anne Sacoolas in August – confirmed he was taking Iran International’s plight to the UN.
“Whether or not Iran listens, it is important that there is a multinational approach to this Iran problem, and the best way to achieve that is through the UN,” he said last night.
Tom Tugendhat MP, former chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, called for Iran’s ambassador to be summoned.
“Iran’s Ambassador is just a paid apparatchik for a dictatorial state, but seeking to interfere in the freedom of the press here goes beyond the remit of any embassy. He should be summoned by the Foreign Office as a matter of urgency,” he said.
“We cannot tolerate the behaviour being levelled at these journalists. Some of them are even UK citizens.
“If you care about the rule of law, this includes freedom of the press. It must be defended. “
The FCO has so far resisted, though sources say back door talks are taking place.
A spokesman said: “We are deeply concerned by the reports of these threats. The UK is committed to ensuring that journalists are able to do their jobs without fear of retribution.””

Thousands of people took to the streets in anger following Soleimani’s death after the US airstrike on Friday.
US President Trump tweeted on Saturday that Iran “is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets”.
Following the attack, Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: “Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently hundreds of Iranian protesters.
“He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years.
“Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!”

Iran said on Sunday it would further roll back its commitments to a 2015 nuclear deal with six major powers but continue to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog according to state television.
The station cited a government spokesman as saying Iran would not respect any limits set down in the pact on the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges it could use, which meant there would be no limits on its enrichment capacity, the level to which uranium could be enriched, or Iran’s nuclear research and development.
On Sunday Iraq’s parliament also called for US and other foreign military forces to leave amid a growing backlash against the killing of Soleimani.
The Iraqi parliament passed a resolution calling on the government to work to end all foreign troop presence.
“The Iraqi government must work to end the presence of any foreign troops on Iraqi soil and prohibit them from using its land, air space or water for any reason,” it said.
The UK Government has urged Iraq to allow UK soldiers to continue the fight there against the so-called Islamic State terror group.
A UK Government spokesman said: “The coalition is in Iraq to help protect Iraqis and others from the threat from Daesh (Islamic State), at the request of the Iraqi government.
“We urge the Iraqi government to ensure the coalition is able to continue our vital work countering this shared threat.”
On Sunday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Iran’s General Qassem Soleimani of having been “a threat to all our interests” and said “we will not lament his death”, as he called for de-escalation from all sides.
He said: “Today I have spoken with President Macron, President Trump and Chancellor Merkel, and will be speaking with other leaders in the coming days.
“General Qassem Soleimani posed a threat to all our interests and was responsible for a pattern of disruptive, destabilising behaviour in the region.
“Given the leading role he has played in actions that have led to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and western personnel, we will not lament his death.
“It is clear however that all calls for retaliation or reprisals will simply lead to more violence in the region and they are in no-one’s interest.
“We are in close contact with all sides to encourage de-escalation. I will be speaking to other leaders and our Iraqi friends to support peace and stability.””
