The petrol price demonstrations rapidly turned violent faster than any previous rallies in a sign if the widespread economic discontent which has gripped the country since May 2018 when Donald Trump imposed crushing sanctions after unilaterally withdrawing from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
State TV alleged some of the dead were “rioters who have attacked sensitive or military centres with firearms or knives, or have taken hostages in some areas”.
Its report described others killed as passers-by, security forces and peaceful protesters, without assigning blame for their deaths.
In one case, the report said security forces confronted a separatist group in the city of Mahshahr armed with “semi-heavy weapons”.
It said: ”For hours, armed rioters had waged an armed struggle. In such circumstances, security forces took action to save the lives of Mahshahr’s people.”
Mahshahr, in Iran’s south-western Khuzestan province, is believed to have been among the hardest-hit in the crackdown…”
Essex school horror: Multiple children hit by car outside school – Murder inquiry launched (express, Dec 3, 2019)

“A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been killed in a “deliberate” hit-and-run crash after a car ploughed into a group of children outside a school in Loughton, Essex.
Four teenagers through to be pupils at Debden Park High School and a 23-year-old woman were also injured when the car collided with them. Essex Police said a 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, six counts of attempted murder and one of causing death by dangerous driving. He also faces charges including causing serious injury by driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and driving without insurance.
Officers had launched an immediate manhunt to trace a silver Ford KA car which is believed to have been damaged in the crash on Willingdale Road.
Police were called to the scene shortly after the end of the school day, at around 3.20pm on Monday.
Fifteen ambulances sent by East of England Ambulance Service 10 other vehicles and three air ambulances rushed too the scene.
The 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital but later died.
Two 15-year-old boys, a 13-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl and the 23-year-old woman were also hurt.
Essex Police said they were treated at the scene or a nearby hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.
A police cordon remained in place along Willingdale Road on Monday evening, manned by uniformed officers.
The cordon began just outside the entrance to the school, near the junction off Jesel Drive.
Chief Superintendent Tracey Harman told reporters on Monday night: “We believe that the collision was deliberate and as such we have launched a murder investigation.
“We are investigating whether or not this incident may have been connected with another incident nearby.”
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Kirby said: “This has been a truly shocking incident and my deepest sympathies are with all those involved.
“I would like to thank the many members of the public who have called us with information and spoken to our officers, as well as those who provided crucial medical assistance at the scene.
“I would urge anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who may have seen anything on social media that they think could be crucial to call us on 101 and quote incident number 726 of 2 December.”
Debden Park High School headteacher Helen Gascoyne said the school has been “devastated” by the death of one if its students, adding the pupils will be offered counselling today.
She said in a statement: “As a school and a community we are devastated to say that as a result of the incident in Willingale Road this afternoon, it is with great sadness that we must report that a 12-year-old student from our school has sadly died.
“Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected. As a school we continue to work with the police supporting the ongoing investigation.
“The school will be open tomorrow with a number of counsellors on hand to support our community.”
A father, who did not want to be named, told Essex Live about his daughter being hit by the Ford car.
He said: “A Ford Ka mounted the pavement behind her. Her friend was bounced onto the bonnet before another boy was hit very bad.
“The car drove off down the road and the police arrived quickly. My daughter is safe, but the wing mirror clipped my daughter. Her friend got thrown off the bonnet.
“It was awful to witness. Everyone is in shock.”
Loughton Town Councillor and former town Mayor, Stephen Murray said: “This is very disturbing news to hear. Let’s hope and pray for the very best outcomes when the picture clarifies.”
Social media users flocked online to share their devastation at the news.
One said: “The horror that has befallen Debden Park tonight. My prayers and love go out to all of them, for the grief will ripple out into the community and beyond.”

“A BOMB squad has been scrambled to a central Lille street to examine a suspicious car containing gas cylinders and a suitcase near a Christmas market.
Police have cordoned off the street on which the car was found and have evacuated people living on ground floor apartments along the route. The alarm was raised after the black Citroen Picasso with broken windows was spotted on the quiet street. The car is stationed close to Place de la Republique.
Officers remain at the scene as they try to determine whether any risk is posed, Grand Lille TV reports.
Soldiers have also been scrambled to the scene in the central part of the French city.
Police were called at 11.30am local time to Rue de l’Hopital-Militaire.
The street is just a few hundred metres from the popular Christmas market.
Students and staff at the ECG school on the street have been ordered out fo the building.
No traffic or pedestrians are being allowed past the cordon.
The car is parked near a pub called Bar Idiot.
The section closed off to members of the public includes Republic Square, Morrison Square and Bethune Street.
The scare comes after a media centre was evacuated in June due to a suspicious item.
The building at Stade Pierre Mauroy was off limits while officers examined the device, later found to be innocent.

The Home Office confirmed that Border Force is responding to two incidents off the coast of Kent.

It is unclear how many migrants were picked up by agents, but photos appeared to show at least nine.
They were seen off the coast of Kent in fishing boats when they were picked up.
They were led ashore before appearing to be loaded into waiting Border Force vehicles.
Last Tuesday, two people were arrested after around ten suspected migrants including a baby were found hidden in the back of a lorry after it parked at a petrol station.
Stunned motorists watched on as the group were led out of the back of a truck by police near a main road in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire.
At one point a swaddled baby could be seen being cradled by its mother in the back of the vehicle.
Ambulance officials later confirmed ten people including a pregnant woman and two children were found at the scene near the A14.
The origin country of the migrants or their nationalities are not known at this stage.
The video showed a police officers opening the rear doors of a lorry to be greeted by a man in a blue shirt.
More people then emerged from deep inside the unmarked lorry, including a young child who was helped down from the lorry by officers.
Tina Rooney, 19, who filmed the clip of the moment the people were discovered said around 20 police officers surrounded the lorry.
She said: ‘There were ten men, a baby, a young child and a woman. There were at least 15 people in the back.
More than 130 suspected migrants were apprehended by Border Force officials last month.
It comes as it was revealed that seven out of 10 Britons support a cap on work permits after Brexit, according to a new poll.
The survey, conducted for Migration Watch UK, said 71 per cent backed an upper limit on migrants who are coming here on work visas.

“Close to 400,000 Rohingya refugee children living in Bangladeshi camps are being deprived of the right to education, according to a new investigation by Human Rights Watch.
In an 81-page report released on Tuesday, the group has accused Bangladesh’s government of blocking children’s access to formal education in private or public schools outside the sprawling camps, and even stopping aid groups from providing a meaningful alternative to secondary education on site.
Long term refugees and children who were among 740,000 people who fled the deadly ethnic cleansing campaign by the Myanmar military in Rakhine State in 2017 have now been caught in a push by Myanmar and Bangladesh to repatriate the Rohingya as quickly as possible.
The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, and other rights groups have repeatedly stated that conditions in Myanmar are currently not conducive for safe, voluntary, and dignified returns and the Rohingya themselves have been too fearful to join two recent repatriation exercises.
“Bangladesh has made it clear that it doesn’t want the Rohingya to remain indefinitely, but depriving children of education just compounds the harm to the children and won’t resolve the refugees’ plight any faster,” said Bill Van Esveld, associate children’s rights director at Human Rights Watch.
“The government of Bangladesh saved countless lives by opening its borders and providing refuge to the Rohingya, but it needs to end its misguided policy of blocking education for Rohingya children.”

“Jews in Sweden say that they are finding it harder to be openly Jewish as statistics show antisemitic attacks are rising across the country.
According to statistics published by the Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Brå), the number of antisemitic attacks has increased from 182 in 2016 to 278 in 2018, a 52 per cent increase, Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Radio reports.
The broadcaster spoke to a Jewish mother who sends her children to the Hillel Jewish school in Stockholm but declined to give her name. “It is very, very sad that it is so. And it is, perhaps, something that makes us sometimes think about moving to another country where it would be easier to fully be who we are.”
Shari Tingman, Acting Group Chief and Preliminary Investigation Leader at Stockholm Police’s Democracy and Hate Crime Group, said police need to do more to understand Jewish culture. Tingman stated: “If the police department cannot understand the culture, how should we be able to work with what is happening out there?”
Several weeks ago, on the anniversary of the Nazi Kristallnacht, the Hillel school was vandalised when an individual drew a Star of David on the front door along with the word “Jew”.
The actual figures for antisemitic attacks could be much higher as many Jews do not report them to the police according to Isak Reichel, secretary-general of the Jewish Central Council.
“Many people do not think there is any point in reporting. They have negative experiences from reporting a crime the police have not taken seriously, may not have considered it to be antisemitism, or just closed the investigation. So there is quite a bit of distrust, I think, and scepticism about reporting crimes to the police,” Reichel said.
The multicultural southern city of Malmö has become known as a hotspot for antisemitism. The Jewish congregation noted earlier this year that the numbers of Jews in the city has rapidly decreased in the last 20 years and warned the city’s community risked disappearing entirely.
Local Jewish teen Daniel Vaknine described his experience living in the city in August saying: “Uncertainty means that you cannot go to school with a visible Star of David because then there is a high risk of being threatened, or that someone follows you from the school or even being beaten.””

“The United Nations may resort to military action against states that defy its mandates on global climate action, according to Ole Wæver, a prominent international relations professor at the University of Copenhagen.
In an interview with ABC News in Australia, Professor Wæver cautions that what he sees as “climate inaction” might draw the U.N. into considering other means to ensure its goals are met, even if that leads to global armed conflict.
Professor Wæver says more resistance to change could potentially threaten democracy although the U.N. would counter that the end justified the means in much the same way countries like Greece had their debt crisis solutions forced on them by European Union bureaucrats in Brussels and Strasbourg.
“The United Nations Security Council could, in principle, tomorrow decide that climate change is a threat to international peace and security,” he says.
“And then it’s within their competencies to decide ‘and you are doing this, you are doing this, you are doing this, this is how we deal with it’.”
He believes classifying climate change as a security issue could leave the door open to more extreme policy responses.
“That’s what happens when something becomes a security issue, it gets the urgency, the intensity, the priority, which is helpful sometimes, but it also lets the dark forces loose in the sense that it can justify problematic means,” he says.
This urgency, he says, could lead to more abrupt – and essentially undemocratic – action at an international level.
“If there was something that was decided internationally by some more centralised procedure and every country was told ‘this is your emission target, it’s not negotiable, we can actually take military measures if you don’t fulfil it’, then you would basically have to get that down the throat of your population, whether they like it or not,” he says.
“A bit like what we saw in southern Europe with countries like Greece and the debt crisis and so on. There were decisions that were made for them and then they just had to have a more or less technocratic government and get it through.”
Professor Wæver made his predictions last month on the eve of the United Nations COP25 climate conference now underway in Madrid, Spain.
Almost 25,000 delegates and 1500 journalists have flown into the Spanish capital to attend the two-week long meeting.
COP25 will consider a wide agenda of global action including implementing taxes on developed countries to transfer wealth to nations dealing with “the cost of drought, floods and superstorms made worse by rising temperatures,” as Breitbart News reported.
President Donald Trump officially withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, which COP25 is a continuation thereof, in October as part of an election promise to voters, saying he was “elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.””

“A gang of four Muslim men attacked a Christian street preacher in Norway, kicking him in the face and threatening to kill him if he did not convert to Islam.
The four men approached Roar Fløttum last week when he was preaching and praying for the sick on a street in Trondheim and asked him to come with them to pray over a friend who was injured. When they got him alone, they pushed him down a cellar staircase, beat him, robbed him, and threatened to kill him if he did not convert to Islam, as reported by the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe, a Vienna-based watchdog group.
“I asked if they wanted to be prayed for and one agreed, saying he had back pain,” Fløttum told the Norwegian daily Norge Idag.
The men “wanted to take me to a friend who they said had injured his foot and was now waiting to be picked up to be taken to the emergency room. I trusted them and joined them. They took me to a backyard. They were very nice and I couldn’t believe they would deceive me,” Fløttum said.
The preacher said that as soon as they entered the backyard, the men pushed him down a cellar staircase and began hitting and kicking him in the face.
“They demanded my bank card, codes, mobile and Apple ID,” Fløttum said. “They held me hostage there for an hour as they made withdrawals from the card. They made about ten thousand kroner.”
“While they kept me there, they threatened me and said they would kill me if I did not convert to Islam,” he said. “They wanted me to say a few words in Arabic. I was scared and actually thought they were going to kill me because they said they had a knife and didn’t want witnesses.”
Fløttum said that as soon as his assailants left him, he went straight to the police, even though the men had warned him not to under penalty of death.
“They are now investigating the case,” Fløttum said. “I hope they are caught and given help, because you cannot act against fellow human beings that way.”
According to police chief May Britt Enmo, no one has yet been arrested for the crime but police are currently reviewing footage from video surveillance cameras along the route traveled by the attackers in the hope of identifying them.

“Afghans are increasingly fearful for their personal safety, but slightly more believe their war-weary country is moving in the right direction, compared to previous years, according to a new survey released Tuesday.
The Asia Foundation poll found that 74.5% of respondents say they always, often or sometimes fear for their personal safety, an increase of over 3 percentage points from 2018.
“Increased optimism around the peace talks along with persistent fears about insecurity and the economy continue to influence Afghan views,” Abdullah Ahmadzai, The Asia Foundation’s country representative in Afghanistan was quoted as saying in the survey.
A total of 17,812 respondents aged 18 years and up were surveyed face-to-face across all 34 provinces from July 11, 2019 to Aug. 7, 2019, the San Francisco-based foundation said.
Optimism about the nation’s direction was at its highest in 2013 before declining to an all-time low in 2016 over concerns about the economy, difficult elections and the effects of radical reductions in foreign troops.
This year, 36.1% of respondents said the country is going in the right direction, up from 32.8% in 2017 and 2018, while 58.2% said the country is going in the wrong direction, down slightly from 61.3% in 2018.
One of the main drivers of the uptick in optimism is the number of respondents who cite “peace and end of war,” an increase from 16.4% in 2018 to 26.3% this year.
President Donald Trump, in his surprise Thanksgiving holiday visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan last week, announced that the U.S. and Taliban have been engaged in peace talks and insisted the Taliban want to make a deal after heavy U.S. fire in recent months.
The trip came after Trump abruptly broke off peace talks with the Taliban in September, canceling a secret meeting with Taliban and Afghan leaders at the Camp David presidential retreat after a particularly deadly spate of violence, capped by a bombing in Kabul that killed 12 people, including an American soldier.
That ended a nearly yearlong effort by the U.S. to reach a political settlement with the Taliban.
It was not immediately clear how long or substantive the U.S. re-engagement with the Taliban has been.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the Taliban’s stance is unchanged. He said the United States broke off talks and when it wants to resume them, the Taliban are ready.
Following the collapse of peace talks and election delays, which took place after this year’s survey field work, prospects for a sustainable political settlement are unclear, Ahmadzai said.
“More than ever, empirical data is a crucial resource for the future and development of Afghanistan,” Ahmadzai added.
According to the foundation, peace talks and the long-delayed presidential election have been at the forefront of public discourse in Afghanistan this year.
Afghans’ stated belief that reconciliation with the Taliban might be possible has grown significantly more common since last year, with 64% of respondents saying it is possible, up from 53.5% in 2018 and 52.3% in 2017, when the question was first asked.
Yet, belief in reconciliation does not necessarily go hand in hand with optimism about the trajectory of the country.
Just last week, a leading Afghan presidential candidate, Abdullah Abdullah, organized protests over a recount in the September election that has been mired in accusations of fraud. Thousands of Abdullah’s supporters rallied Friday in the capital, Kabul, against what they said is the presence of fake ballots during a recount that seems set to favor the incumbent, President Ashraf Ghani.
Results of the Sept. 28 presidential polls have been repeatedly delayed amid accusations of misconduct and technical problems with counting ballots.
If no candidate obtains over 50% in the results, a second round of voting will be held.
Ghani and Abdullah head a fragile national unity government that was put together under U.S. pressure after both leaders claimed victory in Afghanistan’s last elections in 2014.
The study had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.16 percentage points.”

Psychiatrists with the World Mental Health Coalition are soliciting signatures in a campaign to support the impeachment of President Donald Trump predicated on claims that he is mentally unstable. This campaign arguably violates the ethics of psychiatry, mimicking a historic attack on another Republican presidential candidate who successfully sued for libel after psychiatrists declared him unfit for the presidency.
In an email forwarded to PJ Media, three psychiatrists with the coalition ask other psychiatrists to sign on to a petition to the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee to include a statement on Trump’s supposed mental instability into the official record of the impeachment inquiry.

“A Santa Barbara linguist may have just dealt the coup de grace to MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow’s legal defense in a suit brought against her by One America News (OAN) alleging defamation when she claimed the network “really literally is paid Russian propaganda.”
“Maddow did not use any typical opinion-markers when she stated that OAN ‘really literally is paid Russian propaganda,’” Amnon Siegel, a lawyer for OAN owner Herring Networks, wrote in response to a motion to throw out the suit made by Maddow’s lawyers in late October.
Siegel retained UC Santa Barbara linguistics professor Stefan Thomas Gries, one of the most widely cited cognitive linguists in the world, as an expert witness for the legal filing, reported the Times of San Diego, which broke the story Monday.
Noting that Maddow consistently uses markers such as “I mean” and “I guess,” as well as changes in intonation to distinguish her opinions from facts, Gries said in the filing that “there are virtually no lexical, grammatical, or intonational characteristics” that would lead viewers to conclude her statement was an opinion.
“In a highly-structured and transparent way, Maddow separates informational/factual reporting and opinion in a way that marks it as factual,” he noted. “It is very unlikely that an average or reasonable/ordinary viewer would consider the sentence in question to be a statement of opinion.”
“She is a graduate of Stanford and Oxford Universities and a Rhodes Scholar,” Siegel said of Maddow. Noting that misusing the word “literally” isn’t in the reporter’s repertoire, Siegel pointed out that ”on the show, Maddow regularly uses ‘literally’ in its primary meaning,” providing several supporting examples.
According to the Times, Siegel supplied Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary definitions of “really” and “literally” as supporting evidence in his filing, alongside nearly three dozen references to state and federal courts citations and statutes.
In the segment in question, which aired on July 22, 2019, the MSNBC host blasted OAN for employing Kristian Brunovich Rouz, a former contributor to Sputnik News and a perennial favorite target for Maddow’s Russiagate crusade. Herring lawyers brought the $10 million suit in September.
Maddow lawyer Theodore J. “Ted” Boutrous Jr. has tried to parry the accusations by claiming his client’s use of the word “literally” was “a quintessential statement ‘of rhetorical hyperbole, incapable of being proved true or false.’”
Herring President Charles Herring also said in a declaration attached to Siegel’s response that the network was unaware of Rouz’s prior employment at Sputnik and that “neither Maddow nor anyone from Comcast Corporation, NBCUniversal Media, LLC, or MNSBC Cable LLC [sic]” had sought out answers from his company or OAN before airing the segment in question.
“Neither OAN nor Herring Networks has ever received money from Russia or the Russian government, and none of OAN’s content is influenced by Russians or the Russian government,” Herring said. “In fact, Herring Networks is exclusively financed by the Herring Family and has never received outside investment.””

North Korea has officially opened a new town its media is calling the “epitome of modern civilisation”.
Leader Kim Jong-un cut the red ribbon at Samjiyon near Mount Paektu in the north – hailed as one of the country’s most important construction projects.
State media KCNA said the town – which is able to accommodate 4,000 families – boasts new apartments, a ski slope, and a stadium amongst other facilities.
However, forced labour is said to have gone into the construction of Samjiyon.

The NATO meeting, marking the alliance’s 70th anniversary, was set to be a tense affair with Turkey at odds with other members over its purchase of Russian missiles and recent offensive in northern Syria – among other issues.

NATO has considered a plan to bolster the defenses of Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia against a potential attack from Russia, though details remain unclear.
Erdogan said he had spoken to Poland’s President Andrzej Duda on Monday and would discuss the YPG issue with Poland and the Baltic countries in London.

The YPG is closely linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged a bloody insurgency against Turkey since 1984 and is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies.
But Western countries do not consider the YPG a terrorist organization and have armed and trained the group as a frontline force in the ground war against Islamic State.
Turkey launched a military incursion into northeast Syria against the YPG in October over the objections of other NATO members.
Erdogan hit out last week at French President Emmanuel Macron for his criticism of the offensive, saying he was suffering from “brain death.”
Erdogan is due to take part in a four-way summit on Syria with leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom during the visit.
There are also tensions over Turkey’s recent purchase of the S-400 missile defense system from Russia, which could lead the U.S. to impose economic sanctions.

“Iran’s courts have ordered the US government to pay ordinary Iranian plaintiffs a sum of $130 billion in damages caused by Washington’s crimes, Iran’s Judiciary spokesman announced Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Gholam Hossein Esmaeili said the Iranian citizens, not the government, have filed more than 360 complaints against the US government.
The Iranian Judiciary has received those complaints from the public and the local courts have ruled that the US government should pay a total of $130 billion in damages to the plaintiffs affected by the US’ direct crimes against the Iranian nation, he explained.
Esmaeili also called on Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help in the case as the verdicts should be enforced at the international level.
In October 2018, Iran’s vice president for legal affairs called on all Iranian government organizations, private sector companies, medical institutions, physicians, patients and individuals to compile a record of the cases of US violation of the International Court of Justice’s ruling which had ordered Washington to lift bans on the free export of medicine to Iran.
La’ya Joneidi had emphasized that the ICJ’s ruling on Iran’s lawsuit against the US for breaching the 1955 Treaty of Amity and re-imposing sanctions was binding.
Her comments came after the ICJ found that assurances offered by Washington in August 2018 that it would do its best to ensure sanctions would not affect humanitarian conditions were “not adequate to address fully the humanitarian and safety concerns raised” by Iran.”

“The Iranian intelligence Ministry managed to identify and arrest members of a counter-revolutionary network who intended to make anti-security moves ahead of the Student Day due to be celebrated later this week.
Following intelligence activities, the security forces identified and arrested the ringleaders of the counter-revolutionary network, who had planned to disrupt order and provoke clashes in some universities of Tehran and other cities.
The ringleaders intended to provoke a protest at the University of Tehran on Student Day and create insecurity under the pretext of recent protests over gasoline prices.
However, the network’s plot was thwarted thanks to the vigilance of students and relevant institutions.
Following a hike in the price of gasoline last month, a number of Iranian cities saw sporadic protests that turned violent in some cases. A number of banks and government buildings were set ablaze.
Meanwhile, anti-Iranian media outlets as well as some Western officials, including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, voiced their support for the rioters who took advantage of the protests in a number of Iranian cities.
In an address on November 17, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei warned that the sporadic protests and acts of vandalism in Iran would create insecurity.
Describing insecurity as the worst calamity for society, the Leader said that “all evil centers in the world” have mobilized efforts in recent days to encourage unrest in Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei also called on the Iranian authorities to be careful that the rise in the price of fuel would not increase the price of other commodities.
The Leader also called on the people to separate themselves from a group of thugs who are encouraged by the foreign-based anti-Iranian front to foment insecurity.”
