This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

  1. Trump threatens Turkey after greenlighting Syria invasion

    Washington (AFP) – US President Donald Trump warned Turkey on Monday against going too far in Syria, one day after giving Ankara a green light to invade its southern neighbor and sparking panic among Washington’s Kurdish allies.

    The US pulled back 50 to 100 “special operators” from Syria’s northern frontier, where they have served as a buffer between the Turkish military and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, after Trump’s surprise announcement in advance of an expected operation ordered by Ankara.

    In a day of foreign policy turmoil, Trump came under heavy criticism from top Republicans for abandoning the Kurds, who were crucial in the years-long campaign to defeat Islamic State.

    Trump appeared to then backpedal, warning Ankara he would “obliterate” the country’s economy if they went too far — without explaining what that meant.

    “I have told Turkey that if they do anything outside of what we would think is humane… they could suffer the wrath of an extremely decimated economy,” he said.

    What is again concealed in many media: The “truck thief” from Limburg who runs amok and likes to talk about Allah. The man is supposed to be an Arab, his name is Mohammed and he wears a full beard. Police puzzle over motive. Nine injured and nine severely damaged cars are the result of the incident that took place yesterday, Monday, at 5.20 p.m. in downtown Limburg.

    • The attacker’s name is Mohammed, he’s a 32yo Syrian, in Germany since 2015. Known to police for shoplifting and drugs, but not extremism. Eyewitnesses say he ranted about Allah. Police is assuming it’s a terror attack.

      I’ve seen reports of 16, 7, 8 and 9 wounded. Apparently 7 are still in hospital.

    • In Limburg ist ein gestohlener Lkw am Montag auf mehrere Pkw aufgefahren. Acht Menschen wurden verletzt. Bei dem mutmaßlichen Täter soll es sich um einen 32-jährigen Syrer handeln.Der Mann ist bereits polizeibekannt.

      Auf Anfrage von RT Deutsch wollte die Frankfurter Polizei die Einstufung des Vorfalls als Terrorakt nicht bestätigen. Eine Sprecherin erklärte am Dienstagmorgen, man ermittle weiter in alle Richtungen. Es gebe weitere Hypothesen, die die Polizei derzeit prüfe.

    What a quagmire. The prospect of releasing thousands of tard animals out into the world is grim. PT is really playing the currency and economic warfare cards–understandably his weapon of choice. Erdogan is a very typical Turkish bully (I’ve met a couple) who cannot be handled with kid gloves. Turkey occupies a fantastically-strategic geographical position that necessitates it be attacked in such a fashion that it cannot reciprocate, which means its currency achilles is perhaps its most vulnerable front. I’ve recently read a credible argument saying the U.S. dollar is still stronger than we think. I don’t know it this is true or false, but I do know that confidence is everything in the realm of any coin.

    Very credible reports from Iran tell us the U.S. sanctions have had a massive effect. Of course, these are aimed to compel the people to reject their government. This is happening.

    Erdogan threatens the EU daily, trying to blackmail Europe into granting it European citizenship. The last time Turks had European citizenship they had something called the Ottoman Empiire.

    I’m sure the President knows it is time Erdogan experienced significant discomfort. Even a modest effort to inhibit the Turkish government’s ability to raise debt on the open market would have an immediate impact.

    It remains a mystery what the true gold stock of Fort Knox is. Ultimately, confidence in any coin of any realm must be supported by tangible back-up.

    If last night’s Dystopia leadership debate is any indication, the U.S. has a growing liability on its Northern border. The cacophony of socialist hens (only one woman in the bunch) made it difficult for Bernier’s clarion call to be heard. While I’m confident that he’ll surprise many with his success, it won’t be enough to stem the damage of Dystopia’s next four years.

    If he has not yet done so, PT must secure Dystopia’s in-the-ground gold reserve. The U.S. effectively did so before through Barrick. This will make the dollar solvent once again, make America great again, and provide enormous financial leverage against all enemies of freedom.

    • Thank you Johnny, you are one of the few regulars who understand the economics of this situation. My personal belief is that yes the US Dollar is stronger then people keep saying but this strength depends in part on who is President and how much faith people have that the President can successfully pull the US through an economic crash.

      Jimmy Carter drove the US economy down, as did Obama. Reagan and Trump pulled us back from the brink to once again being strong and powerful. The major problem Trump has in trying to deal with the military and economic troubles we have is Obama doubling the US national debt, in 8 years he spent as much money (and borrowed as much) as all previous Presidents combined. If we can keep Trump in office for another term and get a President who understands business and economics to follow him we can grow our way out of the debt.

      As you say the value of all fiat currencies including the digital ones is faith that they will are worth face value. Yes the value of the Dollar also depends on how much gold is in Fort Knox, I wish we could learn how much is there and how much Obama sold. I would like to think that someone would have blown the whistle on any gold removed but that might not happen.

    Over the years, the ALP has expelled more of its MLCs for failing to vote for the Council’s abolition than are here representing Labor today.
    Among conservatives, George Reid in 1895 dissolved the parliament on the single issue of Legislative Council obstruction, pledging (he said) to “clear the fossils” from a “rotten and corrupt” chamber.

    Crooks and scoundrels aside, this place has been true to Talmage’s painting.

    For all its pitfalls and failings, the Legislative Council has always redeemed itself in wanting to extend the reach of Western civilisation and advancement in Australia.

    Like so many parts of our politics that have changed quickly in recent times, there are voices here who do not believe in the virtues of the West, who do not acknowledge the nation-building achievements of our culture and our country.
    It’s like a scene from The Life of Brian, a case of: What has Western civilisation done for us?
    Only advanced healthcare and education; architecture, engineering, information technology, free speech and the rule of law.
    In fact: this chamber, this parliament, in this city, all our public institutions and the material comforts we take for granted – none of them could exist without the greatness of the West.
    Without the advances that began with the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution and continue to this day.
    Yet still, among the Leftist elites, among the social engineers and cultural dietians, sneering at our civilisation and its achievements has become their new pastime.
    They preach diversity but practice a suffocating cultural conformity, wanting everyone to be just like them.
    They argue for inclusion but as soon as a Christian, a conservative, a libertarian, a nationalist, a working class larrikin, an outsider from the vast suburbs and regions of our nation disagrees with them, they crank up their PC-outrage machine to exclude them from society.
    They are tolerant of everything except dissenting values and opinions – meaning, of course, they are tolerant of nothing that matters, only themselves.
    This is the Leftist curse through the ages: the recurring history of those who so badly crave control over others, they lose control over themselves.
    In their lust for authority, they lose their respect for the rights of others.
    Like a scene from Orwell’s Animal Farm, the Green-Labor-Left has become the thing it originally opposed: elitist, would-be dictators taking away from working class communities the things these battlers value:
    The right to speak their mind.
    To say they love their country and want Australia Day to stay.
    To practice their Christianity, openly and freely.
    To send their children to school without the garbage of Safe Schools, Wear-It-Purple days, ‘HeadRest’ indoctrination and the other crackpot theories making some NSW classrooms more like a Hare Krishna meeting than actual education.
    And when they go to work, the chance to do their job without being bombarded by employment quotas, ‘unconscious bias’ training and a long list of unspeakable, taboo words – scary, scary stuff, like ‘guys’ and ‘mums and dads’.
    The New Left are the new primitives of our time: junking the importance of evidence, of recorded history, of biological science, to pretend that all parts of our lives (especially race, gender and sexuality) can be fluid, that everything we know and feel around us is, in fact, ‘socially constructed’.
    Mr President, they’re peddling Fake News.
    We haven’t been brainwashed by ‘capitalist hegemony’ as the post-modernists argue.
    People know and understand the things they see and feel in their lives.
    It’s called evidence.
    Our personal characteristics and identities are fixed, not fluid.
    With few exceptions, people are born either male or female.
    We shouldn’t be confusing young people and risking their mental health by pushing gender fluidity upon them.
    We shouldn’t be taking away from parents their essential role as the primary carers of their children – in matters personal and sexual.
    We shouldn’t be changing the purpose of our education system: transforming schools from places of skill and academic attainment into gender fluidity factories.
    Most of all, we shouldn’t be losing sight of the interests of mainstream, majority Australia.
    In the last national census, for instance, 13 hundred Australians identified as transgender.
    But to listen to the political and media coverage of this issue, you would think there were 13 million.
    Mr President, Everywhere I travel, parents and grandparents, workers and communities, tell me how concerned they are about Australia’s direction.
    They ask me, ‘What’s happened to our country; where has this nonsense come from?’

  5. For some reason, somebody chose Clarice Gargard to represent Dutch women at the UN.
    She’s an obscure American-Dutch “journalist” with Liberian roots. Her father was the right-hand man of bloody dictator Charles Taylor, she made a documentary about him which just premiered.
    She’s an intersectional feminist who seems to spend most of her time on Twitter, spewing hate against whites, men, the west, and the Netherlands in particular. She must have blocked thousands of people by now.

  12. France’s Macron Vows ‘Unrelenting Fight’ Against Islamist Terror Days After Deadly Knife Attack (sputniknews, Oct 8, 2019)

    “Media reports said on Monday that French investigators had found a flash drive carrying materials with Daesh* terror group propaganda while checking the house of the man who stabbed four colleagues at the Paris police department last week.

    French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the entire nation to mobilise against Islamism.

    “We will wage an unrelenting fight in the face of Islamist terrorism,” Macron told a ceremony at the police headquarters where four police officials were killed by their radicalised colleague last week.

    Michael Harpon, 45, stabbed four of his colleagues at the Paris police headquarters. The attacker was shot dead by police after the incident. According to media reports, Harpon converted to Islam some years ago and showed signs of radicalisation, including support for the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting and a series of co-ordinated attacks on 13 November in Paris, which claimed the lives of 130 people. He had reportedly worked as an IT specialist in the intelligence directorate of the Paris police headquarters since 1993 and possibly suffered frustration due to lack of promotion.

    Investigation of the Attack
    An investigation into the attack was launched and later handed to the anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office.

    On Monday, media reports said the French investigators had found a flash drive carrying materials with Daesh* propaganda as they checked Harpon’s house. According to Le Parisien, the flash drive contained video clips with Daesh-related materials as well as addresses and personal information about Harpon’s colleagues.

    The attacker, who was reportedly deaf, is believed to have married a Muslim woman named Ilham in 2014 and had two children with her. Ilham was also arrested after the attack but was freed days later and was not charged.

    Interior Minister Shrugs Off Criticism
    After the attack, the opposition called on France’s interior minister Christophe Castaner to resign. The minister admitted that the opportunity to prevent the killing of the officers was missed but added that he would not step down over the tragedy. He said that since 2003 the French police had prevented 59 terror attacks.

    “Half of Swedish women have chosen alternate routes when walking due to insecurity and fear of crime amid a wave of sexual assaults, another similar study has shown.

    While deadly violence remains “relatively uncommon” in Sweden, it has increased in recent years. Sweden therefore is not fulfilling the UN goal of reducing all forms of violence, Statistics Sweden has warned.

    A total of 15.3 percent of Sweden’s grown-up population refrain from going out after dark for fear of being assaulted, mugged or sexually threatened. Among women, this proportion is 25 percent, a fresh survey issued by Statistics Sweden said.

    While men aged 20–29 years, statistically speaking, run the highest risk of being victims of violence or assault in public places, women are more likely to become victims of sexual abuse than men.

    “In recent years, deadly violence against men has increased. The deadly violence against women is on the same level as before. Nothing happens,” Statistics Sweden’s Sara Frankl said in a press release.

    The National Security Survey, an annual report by the Crime Prevention Council (Brå), has illustrated the same trend by indicating that almost half of young Swedish women (45 percent) last year took a different route when travelling on foot due to insecurity and fears of crime.

    At the same time, the self-reported exposure to crime has increased to 26.4 percent of the population. The Brå report listed men aged 16-19 as the group as the most likely to suffer abuse and women aged 20-24 as the most subjected to sexual offences.

    In 2019, 28 percent of the population aged 16-84 said they felt very or quite insecure, to the point that they chose not to go out alone late at night, despite the fact that confidence in the police has increased, Brå stressed. Two-fifths of Swedes (43 percent) said they were largely concerned about crime levels in society.

    In 2018, about 22,500 sexual crimes were reported, of which 7,960 were classified as rape. A total of 6.4 percent of the respondents, mostly women, reported having been subjected to sexual offences in 2017, Brå stressed.

    “A more restricted life is a serious consequence of fears of being exposed to crimes that mainly affect women, but by extension, it is a problem for all of us if the goal is for us to have an equal society,” investigator Sofie Lifvin said in a comment to national broadcaster SVT.”

    An increasing number of young immigrants are being sent to Africa to be “re-educated” in the culture of their home country, the Swedish Foreign Ministry has warned in internal proceedings, according to the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

    According to the newspaper, the phenomenon primarily involves young people with roots from Somalia and Kenya living in troubled suburbs, who have either become “Westernised” or taken up crime and drugs.

    Last year alone, the Swedish Foreign Ministry handled 25 cases where young people were sent on such trips. This year until May, the Swedish officials have contact with twelve affected youth, six of whom had been shipped off to Kenya and six to Somalia. In 2018, a total of 104 family disputes arose, including both cases related to “education trips” and forced marriages.

    The unsuspecting children are often told that they are going on holiday, but in reality the trip often takes a more grim turn.     According to the Swedish embassy in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, children run a high risk of mental and physical violence, including being chained. A single “re-education trip” is said to cost between SEK 2,000 and 5,000 ($200 to 500).

    “Sending children there and dumping them is the worst thing you can do. Not only is this too much. It is counterproductive, and in the worst case, they risk joining the terrorist group al-Shabaab instead,” Omar Adam of the Somaliland association told Svenska Dagbladet.

    Previously, a similar phenomenon of kids being sent to “Quran schools” to avoid “Westernisation” sparked concerns in Norway. The diplomatic work to help the exposed children is obstructed by the fact that neither of the countries have embassies in Somalia and must resort to using Kenya as mediator.

    Sweden’s Somali diaspora numbers about 100,000 people, of whom over 68,000 were born in Somalia. In 2012 Swedish national broadcaster SVT reported that four in five Somalis in Sweden were unemployed, and 70 percent lacked completed school education. Somalia also has also one of the world’s highest rates of female genital mutilation, at over 90 percent.

    Mr Salvini said the open ports policy resumed by the Five Star Movement-Democratic Party coalition is to blame for the estimated 13 or more dead off the coast of Lampedusa.

    “These deaths are the results of do-gooders, of ‘there is room for everyone’, of open ports, of renewed enthusiasm for the smugglers,” Salvini said in comments reported by Il Giornale.

    “The number of landings has tripled. Those who allowed the ports to be reopened, do they mourn these dead people?” the populist League party leader added.

    According to reports, the vessel shipwrecked near the island of Lampedusa contained around 50 migrants, 20 of which were reported still missing as of Monday afternoon and 22 rescued by the Italian coastguard.

    The shipwreck took place during rescue operations due to adverse weather conditions and the sudden displacement of migrants from the ship. Eight children are also among the 20 or so migrants missing.

    The Agrigento prosecutor’s office says it has already launched an investigation into the incident on potential charges of negligent homicide.

    After telling Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte that Italy “cannot go on like this”, Salvini said that people smugglers were “celebrating” and urged the government to “realise the disaster of having tripled the landings”.

    The open port policy comes after Salvini had closed Italy’s ports to migrant transport NGOs. The move had significantly reduced the number of newly arriving migrants by over 90 per cent.

    Along with reducing the number of migrants, Salvini’s policy during his time as interior minister also reduced the number of drowning deaths in the Mediterranean.

    Earlier this year, before Salvini left office, the International Organization for Migration revealed in the first five months of 2019, only 260 migrants had died in the central Mediterranean — the lowest number in years.”

    Germany, France, Italy and Malta are seeking approval from their EU partners for a “fast-track” process to screen migrants, relocate asylum-seekers and return people who do not apply or qualify for asylum, all within four weeks.

    “It’s a moment for all member states to show more solidarity and more responsibility,” Migration Commissioner Dmitris Avramopoulos told reporters in Luxembourg, where EU interior ministers were meeting to discuss migration challenges in the Mediterranean.

    “We cannot continue like this with what is happening in the Mediterranean. We cannot only try to find ad hoc solutions. We need permanent mechanisms,” he said.

    The system would work based on “pre-declared pledges” countries make to accept asylum-seekers and involve “streamlining procedures” currently in place. Details of the plan are sketchy, but it would operate for at least six months, unless migrant arrivals increase dramatically.

    Under the plan agreed in Malta last month, the EU would also provide “financial, technical and operational assistance” to countries involved.

    For more than a year, humanitarian ships that picked up migrants having left Libya in unseaworthy boats were blocked from docking or disembarking passengers in Italy or Malta. Italy’s former anti-migrant interior minister even threatened to jail the crews of charity-run rescue ships.

    The stance taken by the two countries resulted in standoffs that kept rescued migrants at sea for weeks until other EU nations pledged to take at least some of the people seeking safety or better lives in Europe.

    “Saving people from drowning and fighting the unscrupulous smugglers both belong to the European foundation of values, and so I am pretty sure that many countries will express their sympathy with such a solution,” German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said.

    Seehofer’s willingness to have Germany take a quarter of the people rescued by humanitarian ships has prompted criticism even from within his own conservative party. But Seehofer pushed back against skeptics, noting that in 14 months Germany has taken in 225 people rescued at sea, adding that “you really can’t say that this is the really big challenge of our time — we have other problems.”

    “Of course, we must protect ourselves against there being a ‘pull effect,’ a magnetic effect,” he said. “And we have done that by saying that if this solution were to be abused — if hundreds today turned into thousands — then I can say tomorrow that the emergency mechanism is ended.”

    Well over a million migrants arrived in the EU in 2015, most of them refugees from countries at war like Syria or Iraq, sparking one of Europe’s biggest political crises as nations bickered over who should take responsibility for them and whether others should be forced to help.

    Justice Brett Kavanaugh was never on trial, but you’d never know it to read the transcripts of his confirmation hearings in 2018. Uncorroborated allegations of sexual misconduct from decades earlier leveled against the then-judge were treated as hard, cold facts by the Democrats on the Senate Judicial Committee. The committee members’ unspoken motto during that kangaroo session was “guilty till proven innocent.”

    It appears that myopic and unconstitutional viewpoint still obtains for Democrats, who a year after Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the high court are still calling for his impeachment.

    Nor is this blatantly unfair policy limited to members of Congress. The liberal court of public opinion rushes to the same hasty judgment in matters of race.

    Take, as an example, a case currently in the news. As the Associated Press reports via USA Today, a Florida man has been sentenced to ten days in jail for having failed to report to court on the first day of a trial for which he had been selected to serve on the jury. In addition, the judge sentenced the man to 150 hours of community service, including having to make 10-minute presentations to prospective jurors on the importance of jury duty.

      NYT – Trump’s Trade War Could Put Swiss-Size Dent in Global Economy, I.M.F. Warns

      WASHINGTON — The new head of the International Monetary Fund warned on Tuesday that America’s trade war with China could cost the global economy around $700 billion by 2020 — a loss equivalent to the size of Switzerland’s entire economy.

      In her first speech as managing director, Kristalina Georgieva said the global economy had shifted from a synchronized upswing two years ago to a synchronized slowdown, weighed down in part by the pain of President Trump’s trade war. The fund will be downgrading its projections for global growth in 2019 and 2020 next week, when it releases new projections of the economic losses related to the trade war between the United States and China.

      “We have spoken in the past about the dangers of trade disputes,” Ms. Georgieva said. “Now, we see that they are actually taking a toll.”

      The warning comes at a potential turning point in the trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies. American and Chinese negotiators are meeting in Washington this week to try to resolve a trade war that has begun to inflict economic pain in both countries. Negotiators are hoping to reach an agreement that would improve some of the Chinese economic practices the Trump administration has complained about and potentially roll back some of the tariffs Mr. Trump has placed on more than $360 billion of Chinese goods.

      The stakes are high for some type of resolution. The United States is poised to raise tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese goods to 30 percent from 25 percent on Oct. 15 and plans to tax more consumer goods, including laptops, smartphones and apparel, in December. Barring an agreement, the Trump administration will tax nearly every product that the country imports from China by year-end.

      In a note to investors, Joshua Shapiro, the chief United States economist at the research firm MFR, said that the path of the American economy was partially dependent on “political decisions regarding tariffs and other measures that are designed to force China’s hand.”

      “In this very dangerous game of ‘chicken,’ the global economy may end up as roadkill,” Mr. Shapiro said.

      Economists have debated how much of the global economic slowdown is a result of trade tensions, and how much stems from other factors, including sluggish growth in Europe and a credit slowdown in China. The Trump administration has blamed weak growth overseas, as well as a relatively tight monetary policy from the Federal Reserve.

      But as the trade conflict has dragged on and the United States and China have steadily expanded the lists of goods that are subject to tariffs, the costs of the trade war are becoming more evident.

      Major measures of consumer sentiment have dipped, with many consumers citing tariffs as a reason for their pessimism. Last week, a closely watched gauge of American manufacturing revealed that factories had slowed for the second straight month in September, while new export orders plummeted.

      Other countries have also suffered. German factory orders have plunged, in part because Chinese companies that have been hurt by the trade war have less money to spend on German machinery. That threatens to clamp down on German spending, which would spill over to impact other parts of the eurozone.

      Major international institutions have also slashed their expectations for global growth. In a report last week, the World Trade Organization halved its forecast for growth in the global trade of goods to only 1.2 percent during 2019, in what would be the weakest year since 2009.

      In a speech on Monday in Montreal, David Malpass, the president of the World Bank, said the institution would also be lowering its most recent forecast for global economic growth.

      In June, the World Bank said that it expected the global economy to grow by 2.6 percent in 2019, the slowest pace in three years. But growth this year has slowed further as a result of Britain’s potential exit from the European Union, a recession in Europe and global trade uncertainty, Mr. Malpass said.

      In her address, Ms. Georgieva warned that global trade growth has come to a near standstill, weighing on global manufacturing and investment. The slowdown threatens to spill over to the service sector and consumer behavior, as well, she said.

      She added that, even if growth picks up in 2020, trade tensions are leading to changes that may last a generation. Supply chains have been broken as companies that once manufactured products in China have tried to find alternatives in order to avoid the tariffs. And a broader fight between the United States and China over which country will dominate technologies like 5G is creating “a ‘digital Berlin Wall’ that forces countries to choose between technological systems,” she said.

      That $700 billion loss because of the trade war with China translates to roughly 0.8 percent of global gross domestic product, she said, and includes more than $200 billion of direct losses to businesses and consumers. Much larger secondary effects from a loss of confidence and disruption to markets will also occur.

      “In this scenario, the whole economy of Switzerland disappears,” Ms. Georgieva said.

      Until recently, much of the American economy had been insulated from the pain of the trade war. That is because the bulk of the United States economy is powered by consumption and services, unlike some smaller countries that are more exposed to shifting global winds of trade. Trade represents just 27 percent of the American economy, according to World Bank figures, less than China at 38 percent and Germany at 87 percent.

      The Trump administration has argued that the tariffs it began imposing more than a year ago are having only a limited effect on the American economy. Officials have blamed any signs of slowdown on weakness overseas, a strong United States dollar dragging on exports and the actions of the Federal Reserve, which has maintained tighter monetary conditions than many global central banks.

      “We are still suffering the aftermath of severe monetary restraint in 2018,” Larry Kudlow, one of the White House’s top economic advisers, said in an interview on Fox Business Oct. 4. “And the eurozone in general is in a virtual recession.”

      But several recent studies — from academics, Wall Street researchers and the Federal Reserve — have found varying degrees of economic damage from Mr. Trump’s trade policies, primarily through reduced business investment.

      Steven J. Davis, an economist at the University of Chicago who has built several indexes to measure policy uncertainty, wrote in a research paper released in August that Mr. Trump’s trade uncertainty has unsettled trading partners and the global economy, contributed to depressed investment and become a major source of volatility in stock markets, developments that Mr. Davis calls “an extraordinary departure from recent history” for American trade policy. In another recent study, Fed economists estimated that trade policy uncertainty reduced the level of investment in the United States by at least 1 percent in 2018, which equates to several hundred billion dollars.

      Goldman Sachs researchers ran a similar analysis this month, but they came to a much different conclusion. The trade war, they said in a research note, was only having “modest” effects on investment in the United States.

      In a paper published Monday, Michael Waugh, a professor of economics at the New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business, argued that China’s retaliatory tariffs were also having an effect on spending by American consumers. The paper showed that parts of the United States that are most exposed to the tariffs China has put on American products in response to the trade war — including the upper Midwest, the West Coast and parts of Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska — have also seen a drop in consumer spending on automobiles, as well as new job creation.

      “The retaliation is having real impacts on the people that are hit by it,” Mr. Waugh said.

      Trade uncertainty has also factored prominently in the Fed’s recent interest rate cuts. Fed officials reduced borrowing costs in July for the first time since the Great Recession, then followed that up with a second move in September.

      In both cases, Chair Jerome H. Powell cited slowing global growth and trade tensions as factors that had put central bank officials on guard by intensifying risks to the economic outlook. The question now is whether the central bank will lower rates again, or whether it views its moves so far as sufficient protection for the economy. Officials have left the door open to a cut at their late October meeting without clearly signaling that one is coming.

    A group calling itself “Gli Svegli” (The Awake) has claimed responsibility.

    Following the posting, Rome police initiated an investigation into the act, classifying the social media post as an “aggravated threat.”

    “In a rare move, Swedish police published photos of two suspects in an assault rape case leading to both men being quickly arrested following a flood of tips from the public.
    The two men, aged 21 and 26, are suspected of having assaulted and raped a 30-year-old woman named Anna [not her real name]. The attack took place in the Folkets park in the multicultural southern city of Malmö over the summer, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports.

    The pair were caught on CCTV leaving the park. In a move the newspaper described as “unusual”, police published the photographs in the media, leading to useful information, according to police spokesman Calle Persson.

    “The tips were so good that if they had not come in themselves, it would have been only a matter of time before we had arrested them,” Persson said.

    The two men turned themselves in at a police station shortly after their photographs were published, recognising themselves in the photos.

    “Sometimes people do this when they are wanted. Some want to tell their version and some may want to avoid us coming to them and picking them up,” Persson said.

    The alleged rape attack occurred on June 6th when the victim was with her friends in the park celebrating Sweden’s National Day. She briefly left her friends and was approached by two men who took her behind a bush and raped her.

    “If DNA traces have been secured at the crime scene, a tip-off can tie the men to the crime,” Officer Persson said. “It’s one of the most serious crimes — partly with regards to the scale of punishment and from a moral perspective. We take it very seriously,” he added.

    Sex attacks are a problem across Sweden. In August, police in the city of Uppsala warning women to avoid certain areas entirely when walking alone at night following four rapes in just four days.

    Assault rapes, such as the case in which the two men in Malmö are suspects, are where the victim and perpetrator are previously unknown to each other before the sex attack. According to figures released by Swedish broadcaster SVT last year, assault rapes are overwhelmingly committed by migrant-background individuals.

    The broadcaster claimed as many as eight out of ten assault rapes were perpetrated by migrants, half of whom had lived in Sweden less than a year before their attack.”

    Skane University Hospital in Malmo, southern Sweden, said the person walked into the infection clinic on Monday after coming down with a fever and doctors immediately suspected a case of Ebola. Maria Josephson, director of operations at the clinic, said the patient, whose gender and age has not been revealed, had been in an area affected by Ebola, a disease which has killed thousands in a series of outbreaks in African nations since 2014.

    Ms Josephson told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet: “There are confirmed cases of Ebola in the area where the person has been staying.

    “The reason the suspicion arose is symptoms in the form of fever, combined with where the patient has been.”

    The hospital has launched an investigation to determine what exactly the patient is suffering from and has isolated them from others.

  43. Elizabeth Warren offers judicial ‘ethics’ plan, targets Brett Kavanaugh

    Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday announced a plan to crack down on misconduct by judges that would allow the reopening of an investigation of Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.

    Ms. Warren, a top contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, said it was time to strengthen the ethical integrity and impartiality of the federal judiciary.

    “It’s time to ensure that judges do not hear cases where they have conflicts of interests, strengthen our nation’s ethics rules for judges, and ensure accountability for judges who violate these rules,” the Massachusetts senator wrote in a statement describing her proposals.

    She wants to give more power to judicial watchdogs to investigate judges and to impose penalties, such as stripping them of their federal pensions.

    The rollout of the plan coincided with the opening of the Supreme Court’s 2019 session. She named several judges that deserved more ethical scrutiny and singled out Mr. Kavanaugh, who is a popular target of liberal activists over unproven allegations of sexual misconduct in high school and college.

    Under Ms. Warren’s plan, investigations into judicial misconduct could continue even when a judge resigns from office or is elevated to the Supreme Court. Current rules shield judges and justices from further investigation once they ascend to higher benches.

    “Afghan forces killed a top Al-Qaeda commander in a joint raid with the US on the Taliban in Helmand province.

    Asim Omar was killed alongside six of his fellow terrorists from the organisation in a September 23 attack, Afghanistan’s National Directorate for Security revealed today.

    Omar was the head of operations in South Asia and died alongside his courier to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

    ‘They had been embedded inside the Taliban compound in the Taliban stronghold of Musa Qala,’ added the Afghan intelligence services’ statement.

    The operation targeted a Taliban hideout in the Musa Qala district, but at least 40 people attending a wedding party were killed on the same day, according to provincial officials, in US airstrikes.

    Most of dead were women and children, according to Helmand’s Deputy Provincial Councilman Abdul Majed Akhund.

    Twelve more civilians were wounded and were hospitalized in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province.

    Civilian deaths caused by US and Afghan forces have surpassed those caused by the Taliban and other insurgents for the first time in 18 years of war, according to a United Nations report.

    The offensive also killed 22 Taliban fighters, including foreigners, Afghanistan’s defense ministry said.

    Fourteen people were arrested, including five Pakistani nationals and one Bangladeshi.

    The statement said a large warehouse of supplies and equipment was also destroyed.

    The Taliban are at their strongest since their ouster in 2001 and hold sway over more than half the country, staging near-daily, deadly attacks across Afghanistan.

    A bomb detonated inside a classroom in eastern Ghazni province, wounding at least 19 university students today, a provincial official said.

    Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor, said 12 of the wounded are female students of the Ghazni University, located on the outskirts of the provincial capital, the city of Ghazni.

    Noori added that two of the wounded are in critical condition. No one immediately claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack.

    Last month a magnetic explosive device attached to a minibus belonging to the same university detonated, killing the driver. Noori says five students were also wounded in that blast.

    The Taliban are active in the province and regularly launch attacks against security forces there.

    The UN report found that US and Afghan forces killed 717 civilians and injured 680 in the first six months of the year, up 31 per cent from the same period in 2018. The Taliban and IS killed 531 and wounded 1,437, down 43 per cent.”

  46. Democrats threaten SC justices with court packing if they hear gun law challenge

    The Supreme Court Monday declined to dismiss a Second Amendment challenge to a firearm regulation in New York City after Democrats threatened the justices with court packing, fearing a divided ruling.

    The case involves a New York City system that set up two types of licenses for handgun possession: one that allowed carry outside the home, and the other that only authorized possession at a home or business.

    The city had an ordinance that prevented those with the home-only license from transporting their weapons to second homes or shooting ranges outside the city.

    Gun rights groups challenged the ordinance, but lower courts sided with the city.

    The gun rights groups have asked the Supreme Court to hear the case, and it is scheduled to be argued Dec. 2.

    New York, though, fearing a loss that could turn into a major pro-gun precedent, scrambled to undo its ordinance. The city, along with Democratic lawmakers, has petitioned the court to refuse to hear the case, arguing the change in law has made the conflict moot.

    “The respondents’ suggestion of mootness is denied. The question of mootness will be subject to further consideration at oral argument, and the parties should be prepared to discuss it,” the court noted in its orders.

  48. Why the Syria Pullout Makes Sense

    America’s president stands firm for America’s national interest.

    Washington is awash with dire predictions following President Trump’s “surprise” announcement late Sunday night to pull out the remaining 500 or so U.S. advisors currently in northern Syria.

    But as the President tweeted on Monday morning, he was elected to end our “ridiculous endless wars,” which are costing us huge amounts in blood and treasure. Continued U.S. entanglement, according to Trump, can only make Russia and China happy.

    So which is it: is the President endangering the United States and our allies by pulling out of Syria? Betraying our allies, the Kurds? Or is he defending America’s national interest?

    I have spent a lot of time with the Kurds on the ground, especially in northern Iraq, along the Iranian border. I have also met with Kurdish peshmerga generals in Iraq, as well as the overall Iraqi commander, in charge of the fight against ISIS in Mosul.

    That battle is over. And contrary to how MSNBC has been misquoting Sen. Lindsay Graham all day, the United States has indeed utterly defeated the ISIS caliphate.
