“Syrian military has found a cave near the recently liberated city of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province that was used by militants as a large military base, Big. Gen. Abdel Kerim Meikhun told reporters.
“Our fighters discovered this cave after the liberation of the south of Idlib province, which took place in late August. Apart from being a powerful fortified area, it also stored scores of various weapons and combat outfit of militants: here are a helmet, uniform and gas mask; and here is a heavy machine gun belt and rocket-propelled grenade munitions,” Meikhun said.
According to him, the cave is about 10,000 square meters (107,639 square feet) and has an extensive system of tunnels. The facility also had a command post with a map of the city of Khan Sheihoun and the village of Morek, a field hospital and sleeping rooms.
Meikhun noted that each of the tunnels was at least 200 meters long. Before leaving, militants hastily mined the facility, with sapper work still underway.

The day before, US President Donald Trump told reporters that based on evidence he’s seen, it appears as though Iran was responsible for the weekend attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities.
Besides the attacks on the Saudi oil facilities, the situation in the region escalated earlier in the year in the wake of the arrest of a British tanker by Iranian authorities over alleged violations of maritime laws and attacks by unknown forces on ships in the Gulf.
Following the attacks, the US has increased its military presence in the Gulf citing an alleged Iranian threat and has called on other countries to join the patrolling efforts in the Gulf.”

Sweden is often referred to as “multiculturalist”, but what politicians really have created is an apartheid state, star journalist Janne Josefsson maintains in an opinion piece in Dagens Nyheter.
The more the country derails, the more desperate and populist the rulers become in their rhetoric, Josefsson argued in his article called “It reeks gunpowder in the world’s best country”.
“We call it multiculturalism, but in fact we have created a social, economic and human apartheid in Sweden. Regardless of what government we have had, segregation has increased,” Josefsson wrote, taking a jab at both centre-left Social Democrats and centre-right Moderates who have steered Sweden in the past decades. While rejecting the idea that this is the result of a deliberate attempt to destroy the country, Josefsson believes it reflects a “complete failure” of politicians, regardless of their alignment.
According to Josefsson, Sweden is no longer a single country, but rather “different worlds”. He draws the example of Sjumila school in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, where fewer than one percent of pupils speak Swedish as their mother tongue. Schools have become “conveyor belts” that deliver personnel to criminal gangs. In Sjumila school, every fourth boy becomes a criminal shortly after completing school, he argued.
Despite all talks of integration at all levels of government, the segregation has only grown worse, Josefsson argued.
According to Josefsson, the political denial of reality has been replaced by the “extremely harsh rhetoric” of leading politicians, such as Social Democrat Justice Minister Morgan Johansson, who called the perpetrators of a recent street murder in Malmö that made national headlines “abominable beasts”. This, argued Josefsson, is a sign of desperation, a token of politicians’ inability to solve the problem.
Josefsson concluded that Sweden gets “the society it deserves”.
Incidentally, intelligence analysis professor Wilhelm Agrell almost simultaneously published an opinion piece of his own warning of Sweden’s “internal conflict” “dragging the country down”, echoing some of Josefsson’s thoughts. According to Agrell, violence keeps escalating in Sweden as the state’s monopoly on violence no longer exists.
“In the typical internal armed conflict, different groups are fighting each other and to varying degrees a state power that has completely or partially lost its violence monopoly,” Agrell wrote in his article in Svenska Dagbladet bluntly called “We must act to save the country”. He drew parallels with 1980s Lebanon and the 1990s Balkans, where internal conflicts escalated to a full-scale war.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing in Lennox Gardens in southwest London around 4pm.

Teachers helped the man, who was reportedly stabbed in the leg, until paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital, it was reported.

A South Australian butchery has refused to take down a controversial window sticker which read “non halal certified” after the advertising regulatory body found it to be offensive and said it “incited hatred” towards Muslims last month.
Valley Butchers, in Adelaide, became the subject of a complaint to Ad Standards after adding the phrase to their store window, surrounded by images of kangaroos and emus.
In one complaint, quoted in the Ad Standards finding, the author said the signage “perpetuate[s] a culture of vilification towards religious minorities, that results in harm towards them.”

In response, the butchers said the sign was not intended to cause malice and was simply stating a fact.
“We were getting asked quite frequently whether we are halal approved so I am just stating that we are not and that saves a lot of wasted time,” they said.
The majority of the Ad Standards Community Panel agreed that the sign made fun of halal certification and was offensive and “demeaning to people who are of that faith and Muslim ethnicity”, adding that there was no such thing as “non halal” certification.
They also found that the sign, coupled with the images of iconic Australian animals, gives the strong impression that people of a certain ethnicity or religion would not be welcome in the store.
“Using the phrase ‘non Halal certified’ in conjunction with imagery of Australian animals was a suggestion that Islamic dietary practices are not Australian,” the finding, released on 7 August, read.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Valley Butchers thanked people for their “support and encouragement” and committed to keeping the sign – which they later changed to “not halal certified” – on display.
“As long as we own the shop the sign won’t ever come down,” they said, with hundreds of people commenting in support.

Saudi attacks underscore evolving drone threat, experts say
Paris (AFP) – An attack on Saudi oil facilities at the weekend has exposed the vulnerability of the kingdom to drone strikes and underscores how traditional air defences can be breached by new low-cost technology, experts say.
Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s biggest buyers of weapons and spent an estimated $65 billion on arms last year, mostly from the United States, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Its air defences include the latest radars, fighter jets such as the F-15, and Patriot missiles which are meant to intercept missiles fired from enemy territory.
But on Saturday, attacks on national energy giant Aramco’s Abqaiq processing plant and the Khurais oil field knocked 5.7 million barrels per day (bpd) off production, over half of the OPEC kingpin’s output.

A massive gas explosion has sparked a fire at a Russian lab that houses viruses ranging from smallpox to Ebola, authorities have said.
The State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology has said a cylinder exploded in lab which is one of two places in the world that houses the smallpox disease which has been eradicated in the world.

Federal judge tosses lawsuit over Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate group labels
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit that accused leaders of the Southern Poverty Law Center of trying to financially destroy one of the organizations that it has labeled as a hate group.
The Center for Immigration Studies’ lawsuit is devoid of any allegation that the law center made a false statement about the Washington-based nonprofit, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington, D.C., said in her ruling Friday.
“The upshot of the complaint is that defendants advanced a conclusion that was debatable, and that this expression of a flawed opinion harmed plaintiff’s reputation,” Jackson wrote.
The research group accused the Montgomery, Alabama-based law center’s leaders of conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act when they designated it as a hate group in 2016. The judge, however, said the suit improperly attempts to “shoehorn” a defamation claim into the framework of a RICO case.

A new book is shedding light on the unorthodox practices of fired FBI Director James Comey. The upcoming book by former FBI assistant Josh Campbell reportedly raises new facts about the origins of the Russia probe.
Campbell, now a CNN analyst, said Comey took the unusual step of requesting a top secret laptop before a meeting with President Trump. This corroborates claims made by the Inspector General report, which claimed the true intent of the meeting was to gather information to launch the Russia probe.
This differs from prior reporting, which suggested the meeting was intended to inform the president about the salacious dossier.

Ilhan Omar bristled over an ad for a new GOP super PAC that highlights the evils of socialism, claiming that the 30-second spot somehow “incites violence.” It would appear that the anti-Semitic congresswoman knows a good bit about inciting violence. Two days later, she announced on national television that she believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s very existence is a threat to peace in the region. It’s not difficult to imagine her fellow Islamists taking this as an open invitation to attempt to take out the Israeli leader.
In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Omar (D-MN) said she hopes Israel moves in a different direction as the nation heads toward another election on Tuesday. “I certainly hope that the people of Israel make a different decision and my hope is that they recognize that his existence, his policies, his rhetoric really is contradictory to the peace that we are all hoping for the region to see and see soon,” she told viewers.

Anti-migrant vigilante groups growing in Slovenia
European Union member Slovenia has seen the rise of an anti-migrant movement called the “home guards,” that patrol along Slovenia’s border with Croatia, catching migrants and handing them to police.
The militia groups have appeared amid growing anti-migrant sentiment in central and eastern Europe.
Russia: Large-scale missile drills take place in Astrakhan
Russia’s missile defence systems intercepted aerial targets as the ‘Centre 2019’ military drills continued on Tuesday at the Ashuluk testing range in Astrakhan region.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, more than 80 targets were intercepted, including strike drones, cruise and ballistic missiles.
Russia’s S-300 Favorit and S-400 Triumph air defence systems, as well as the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft system were involved in the drills, in addition to MiG-31, Su-27 and Su-35S fighter jets.
Around 128,000 troops from eight countries will take part at the Centre 2019 drills, which run from 16 to 21 September in 17 different locations.
Some 20,000 pieces of military equipment and 600 aircraft will also take part in the multi-nation training.
In addition to Russia, seven other nations participate in the exercises: China, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The drills are aimed at developing and strengthening military cooperation between Russia and its allies.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi calls on followers to intensify their efforts after losing control of territory
BEIRUT—Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ordered his followers to redouble their efforts to further the extremist group’s cause, in an audio message apparently aimed at raising morale after it lost control over its self-proclaimed caliphate in parts of Syria and Iraq earlier this year.
The purported Baghdadi message follows Islamic State’s April release of what was the first known video footage of him in nearly five years. Severely weakened by the five-year military campaign that forced it underground in March, the extremist group remains a potent threat after reverting to insurgency while seeking to inspire attacks globally.
“O soldiers of Allah everywhere, know that what is coming is good…so the efforts must be redoubled and one’s best must be given in all aspects, whether in preaching or media or military or security,” Baghdadi said in a 30-minute recording, according to monitoring group SITE Intelligence.
It wasn’t clear when exactly the audio was produced, but Baghdadi referred to an Islamic State campaign in August, according to SITE. The Wall Street Journal couldn’t independently confirm if the voice in the recording was that of Baghdadi.
The 48-year-old Islamic State leader has evaded capture despite the efforts of the world’s intelligence agencies and a $25 million bounty. Iraqi intelligence believes Baghdadi is hunkered down in the vast desert spanning the border between Iraq with Syria.
The audio recording’s release comes amid rising fears of a broader conflict breaking out in the region after the U.S. blamed Iran for attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure over the weekend. Tehran has denied involvement.
Western and regional military commanders have warned that tensions between Iran and the U.S. are detracting from efforts to prevent Islamic State rebuilding.
Islamic State supporters took to social media after the speech was released, posting photographs of handwritten notes hailing Baghdadi that purportedly came from Turkey, Gaza, Egypt and Sudan.
Baghdadi said the U.S. was “drowning in a quagmire” and “being bled along with its proxies” on battlefields stretching from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, West and Central Africa, East Asia and North Africa.
Hassan Hassan, director of the Nonstate Actors Program at the Center for Global Policy and co-author of a book about Islamic State, said the speech was more focused on the region than any other since the group proclaimed its caliphate in 2014, noting Baghdadi had hardly mentioned the West.
“This suggests that ISIS, like al Qaeda and its offshoots since 2011, will increasingly focus on countries in the Middle East and the wider region, rather than on conducting attacks on the West,” he said, using ISIS as an abbreviation for Islamic State.
A report to Congress by the Pentagon’s Office of Inspector General in August assessed that Islamic State militants were strengthening their capability to carry out attacks in Iraq and Syria.
The report said the group’s determination to make a comeback—and the difficulties encountered by U.S.- backed forces in Iraq and Syria in holding ground in remote areas—had provided a fresh opening for the militants.
The inspector general’s report linked Islamic State’s resurgence to Trump administration decisions to reduce U.S. forces in Syria, shrink the American diplomatic presence in Iraq and diverting reconnaissance systems to efforts to monitor Iranian activity in the region.
It estimated the number of Islamic State members at between 14,000 and 18,000 in Iraq and Syria, including up to 3,000 foreigners, though government estimates vary.

US officials also said that they would be looking to increase intelligence sharing activities with Saudi Arabia, but did not specify what forms such cooperation would take…”
ANATOMY OF THE ATTACK
The strike was highly effective from a military perspective. The weapons hit at around 4 a.m. local time and appear to have struck from a northerly or northwesterly direction. This fits with a string of reporting that suggests related air defense alerts and engine sounds were concentrated in areas of the northern Persian Gulf, as opposed to an ingress route from Yemen…
These factors—plus the lack of attempted air defense interception by numerous overlapping Hawk and Patriot missile batteries—suggest a low-level cruise missile attack that hugged the ground at altitudes of under 300 feet. The footage seen thus far shows only one crashed missile, indicating that the arrival rate was very high, possibly even 95 percent, and that routes were carefully planned to avoid obstacles such as power lines and communication towers.
Seventeen individual impact points were struck at the Abqaiq facility, with a smaller number (perhaps as low as two) at Khurais. The weapons were highly accurate—for instance, all twelve of the thirty-meter-wide spheroid gas-oil separation tanks at Abqaiq were hit almost dead center. Much thinner stabilization towers were also accurately struck.
There are even indications of finesse in the strike’s “weaponeering,” the technical term for munition selection and modification. Some “aimpoints” were clearly hit with large explosive payloads consistent with an Iranian cruise missile such as the 700-kilometer-range Ya-Ali.
Yet the gas-oil separation tanks appear to have been struck with high-velocity kinetic force sans explosions, perhaps signaling an effort to damage but not permanently destroy them. Similar finesse was visible in Iran’s May 12 attacks in the Fujairah anchorage off the United Arab Emirates, where four ships had their hulls expertly holed without causing the vessels to spill oil, sink, or suffer massive fires.
The full level of damage inflicted this Saturday is unknown so far, but considering the range of facilities struck and the long lead times for manufacturing such specialized equipment, the impact on Saudi oil processing capacity could extend into the four-, six-, or even twelve-month timeframe, forcing the kingdom to discontinue offering Arab Light and Arab Super Light grades. This extraordinary outcome would deeply shock oil markets and the Saudi leadership alike…

Last week Iran directly threatened two Washington think-tanks and named specific individuals as targets: The Washington Institute and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. They do serious work.
Iran (probably with Russian and Chinese backing) are indeed testing to see the limits before Trump reacts. Our response must be forcible, and relatively quick, I am doubtful about how useful a covert response would be and seriously doubt that most of our enemies would believe that a cyber response has taken place. Unless there were Saudi causilities (I haven’t see any reports for any deaths) we are probably going to be limited to a non lethal response. My suggestion would be to take out several Iranian refineries and shipping points and taking them out in a way that will take time and money to replace. This might escalate the level of violence but not going something like this will certainly lead to Iran increasing the violence to a level where we will have no choice but to respond with a massive military strike.

“Germany’s Evangelical Church (EKD) said it intends to found a migrant-rescue organization and send a ship to the Mediterranean Sea to bring African migrants to Europe.
“We want to send a ship,” said Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, chairman of the council of the Evangelical Church in Germany. The church council “decided at its recent meeting to found an association in which churches, institutions, and volunteers want to bring another ship together as quickly as possible into the rescue operation.”
“As long as people seeking protection in the Mediterranean drown and government action fails, we will do our utmost to support civilian rescue services,” the bishop stated, citing an “appalling record” of failure to rescue migrants at sea.
The EKD is a federation encompassing twenty Lutheran, Reformed, and United Protestant churches and denominations in Germany, comprising the vast majority of Protestants in the country
The idea of sending their own ship was discussed last June at the Kirchentag meeting of Protestant churches in Dortmund, the largest annual gathering of German Protestants. Last week’s EKD resolution is intended to make that discussion a reality.
“We are sending the clear message,” said Bedford-Strohm, adding that the ship is part of the diaconal, social mission of the church.
No matter why people are in mortal danger, there is a duty to help, said Bedford-Strohm. “Need has no nationality. The church is not a political actor but a diaconal actor.”
In announcing the EKD decision, the World Council of Churches cited Tareq Alaows, representative of the George Soros-funded SEEBRÜCKE movement, who has called for a massive commitment to safe migratory routes.
“All people must have the right to move freely and to come to Europe safely and legally,” Alaows said. “Rescued people must all be taken to a safe harbor immediately. In Germany alone, there are more than 90 municipalities willing to accept additional refugees.”
The EKD and other groups have called on the federal government and all political leaders in Europe to set up a Europe-wide distribution mechanism for European Union-rescued migrants.
“Libya’s people have no choice but to flee across the Mediterranean to reach safety,” said Barbara Held, head of operations of the Sea-Eye NGO. “On overcrowded boats they find themselves in an extremely dangerous situation, but the hope of surviving this danger is greater than the prospect of never escaping the trap of the Libyan internment camps.”
The participating organizations have insisted there must be no repatriation to Libya, but that all migrants should be brought to Europe.”

“AT LEAST four loud bangs have rocked the area near the EU parliament building in central Brussels, according to eyewitnesses.
Images and video posted on social media show a car on fire on Rue Belliard in the centre of Belgian capital. Witnesses said the car burst into flames shortly after 4.30pm local time and brought traffic in the area to a standstill.
The car fire sent clouds of thick black smoke into the street near to the EU buildings.
Brussels fire department spokesman Walter Derieuw confirmed fire engines were on the scene. He said the cause of the fire was not yet clear.
The fire brought chaos and disruption to one of the Belgian capital’s busiest thoroughfares.
A spokeswoman for Brussels transport authority said: “A vehicle caught fire at the intersection between Rue Belliard and Rue de Trêves, generating an impressive smoke release.
“The rescue services are on site but it is not known if there are wounded.
“Traffic lanes have been removed to make way for the security perimeter but Belliard Tunnel is not closed.”

“ISIS is once again on the rise, with the terror group now boasting as many as 14,000 fighters in Afghanistan alone.
The Afghan branch of ISIS, known as Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), is gaining ground as Taliban hardliners angry about peace negotiations with the US have “joined ISIS in droves”, according to experts. IS-K, formed in 2014 and known for its ruthless violence and gory propaganda videos on social media, is believed to be responsible for a surge in violence of ISIS violence this year. The attacks have raised fears of an ISIS resurgence even though the group was defeated in its Iraqi and Syrian heartlands earlier this year.
The Financial Times reported the expansion of the ISIS affiliate across Afghanistan has led to growing concern the group will create a haven for terrorists to organise violence abroad, recreating the conditions that allowed al-Qaeda to organise the 9/11 attacks on the US.
Afghanistan is seen as an important region to recuperate and plan their next phase of operations.
Jonathan Schroden, a military analyst at research organisation CNA, said: “The US is most concerned about IS-K as potentially the next big thing inside ISIS.”
Another expert said the ISIS affiliate is growing steadily in size, as new recruits are joining IS-K from across the Middle East.
Antonio Giustozzi, war historian and author of The Taliban at War, said: “The ISIS caliphate is gone but it reorganised in Afghanistan after a period of disruption.
“Every month tens of members of the caliphate will reach Afghanistan and Pakistan from the Middle East.”
The war expert said new recruits also come from other jihadist groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said: “Groups like al-Qaeda were replying on protection afforded by the Taliban, but with the Taliban [having been’ negotiating peace with the US, they have doubts.
“Now ISIS seems to be the only credible option to retain some haven in Afghanistan.”
IS-K also appears to be growing in strength, with Kabir Taneja of the Observer Research Foundation in New Dehli saying the recent attacks showcase the group’s “power, arms and money”.
He said: “When ISIS started to claim attacks in Kabul, they showcased their power, arms and money.
“You need a strong ecosystem to conduct attacks in what the Taliban consider their sacred ground.”
ISIS is considered an even greater threat than the Taliban because of its increasingly sophisticated military capabilities and its strategy of targeting civilians, both in Afghanistan and abroad.
It is feared that if the Taliban sign a peace agreement with the US it would lead to increased recruitment for IS-K.
The growing terrorist group are also reported to be holding talks with al-Qaeda.
A senior Balochistan government official told the Financial Times there were reports of meetings between the two groups.
They said: “Al-Qaeda is down but not out. It still poses a significant risk.
“At the very least, they seem to be working towards launching a common front agains the Taliban.”
ISIS are believed to be responsible for at least five attacked on the Taliban in Balochistan, a Pakistan province that borders Afghanistan and Iran, between June and August.”

San Juan’s Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz had become a CNN celeb by wearing a, “Help Us We Are Dying” t-shirt. But no one was dying at the luxury resort in San Juan with its 15,000 square feet of gaming tables and its seven restaurants. Except maybe some especially unlucky gamblers. Its blue neon wave walls were shimmering, the machines were jingling and there were some high rollers at the tables.
One of those high rollers was a FEMA administrator.
Ahsha Nateef Tribble’s job had been to get Puerto Rico working again. That’s why Ahsha had been appointed FEMA’s Power Sector Chief and Infrastructure Chief for Recovery.
And she was certainly helping one part of Puerto Rico recover.

News of this development come as Aramco allowed its employees to enter one of the stricken installations for the first time since the attack.
On 14 September, two compounds belonging to Aramco caught massive fire after being hit by a drone strike.
The company had to shut them down, which resulted in more than a twofold drop of Saudi Arabia’s net oil output and, consequently, a surge of oil prices worldwide.
Despite the fact that the responsibility for the attack was claimed by the military wing of Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis, the United States blamed Iran for this incident instead, with Tehran denying these accusations.

DOJ Sues for All of Edward Snowden’s Book Profits
Just when he thinks he’s out, they pull him back in. On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced new legal action against exiled NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The DOJ hopes to recover any profits he makes from the sale of his new book.
Ever since Snowden left his job as a contractor for the NSA, released classified documents exposing unprecedented data collection by the U.S. government, and landed himself under the protection of Russia, he’s been a vexing problem for American authorities. Now that he’s back in the media spotlight promoting his new book, Permanent Record, he presents a new issue for government lawyers: How do you prevent the release of a book when that pesky First Amendment exists? The answer seems to be that you can’t, but you can make the whole process a huge headache.
In a new civil lawsuit, the DOJ claims that as a former employee of the CIA and contractor for the NSA, Snowden has violated his contracts’ non-disclosure agreements that stipulate he would need to submit the book to his former employers for review prior to its publication. Today is Permanent Record’s release date, and according to the lawsuit, that contractually obligated pre-vetting never took place.

The United States’ lawsuit does not seek to stop or restrict the publication or distribution of Permanent Record. Rather, under well-established Supreme Court precedent, Snepp v. United States, the government seeks to recover all proceeds earned by Snowden because of his failure to submit his publication for pre-publication review in violation of his alleged contractual and fiduciary obligations.
The Supreme Court case the DOJ is referring to involved former CIA agent Frank Snepp’s publication of a memoir in 1977, which was not submitted to the agency for review. Snepp’s book, Decent Interval, recounted his time as an intelligence officer and told the story of a rejected report he submitted to his superiors that was critical of the CIA’s handling of the withdrawal from Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War. Snepp was ordered by the Supreme Court to divert the proceeds from the book’s sale to the CIA and was warned that any future publications would require a review by the agency before publishing.
But with Snowden in Russia at the moment, there isn’t much that the U.S. government can force him to do. But that’s where his U.S.-based publishers, MacMillan and Holtzbrinck, come in. “The United States is suing the publisher solely to ensure that no funds are transferred to Snowden, or at his direction, while the court resolves the United States’ claims. Snowden is currently living outside of the United States,” the DOJ said in a statement.
A spokesperson for MacMillan did not immediately respond to our request for comment on this story.
Earlier this week, Snowden told the hosts of CBS This Morning that he’s willing to travel back to the United States and face charges under the condition that he be given a fair trial. The harsh treatment and sentencing of military whistleblower Chelsea Manning have made the expectation of a fair trial feel like a remote possibility for anyone who’s released classified U.S. government information. The fact that Manning is back in jail for refusing to answer questions relating to the crime she already served time for doesn’t make the situation any better.
While losing those book royalties would pale in comparison to the conditions Manning faced—the United Nation’s torture specialist called it “cruel, inhuman and degrading”—Snowden could almost certainly use the money. He’s been in exile in Russia since 2013 with little to show regarding employment. In response to the DOJ’s lawsuit, he’s seizing the promotional opportunity. “This is the book the government does not want you to read,” he wrote on Twitter. He added, “It is hard to think of a greater stamp of authenticity than the US government filing a lawsuit claiming your book is so truthful that it was literally against the law to write.

Justice Department Sues Edward Snowden, Seeking Profits From His Book
The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Edward Snowden alleging that his newly released memoir, Permanent Record, violates nondisclosure agreements he signed with the federal government. Justice Department lawyers say the U.S. is entitled to all of Snowden’s book profits.
The civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in Virginia names the former National Security Agency contractor and his New York-based publisher, MacMillan. The suit argues that Snowden’s failure to receive pre-publication approval from the NSA and the Central Intelligence Agency constitutes a breach of contract.
Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Trent McCotter wrote that the alleged violation of nondisclosure agreements Snowden signed with the two agencies undermines public trust in the federal government and endangers national security.
“Additionally, Snowden has been, and will continue in the future to be, unjustly enriched in the amount of profits, advances, royalties, and other advantages resulting from the unauthorized publication of his book,” McCotter wrote.
For the past six years, Snowden has lived in Russia, where he was granted asylum as he faces separate federal criminal charges in the U.S. over allegations of espionage and the theft of government property following the 2013 leak of classified material about U.S. surveillance programs.
The civil suit asks the court to freeze all of MacMillan’s assets related to Snowden’s memoir and for all of Snowden’s profits and royalties from the book to be placed in a special fund on behalf of the U.S. government. It’s not clear what the money would be used for.
The Justice Department said in a statement that it is “suing the publisher solely to ensure that no funds are transferred to Snowden, or at his direction, while the court resolves the United States’ claims.”
Neither Snowden nor any of his representatives has responded publicly to the civil lawsuit.

The NDP leader is calling on the Leaders’ Debate Commission to reconsider its decision.
Allowing Maxime Bernier to participate in the official federal leaders’ debates will give the People’s Party leader a stage to promote hate, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has told the debates’ commissioner.
“It is wrong that Mr. Bernier be given a platform to promote an ideology of hate that spreads prejudice and disinformation,” Singh said in a letter Tuesday to David Johnston, the former governor general tapped by Liberals to lead the Leaders’ Debate Commission.
The NDP leader alleged in his letter that Bernier has “courted racists to run for his party,” and has been photographed with “far-right hate groups with neo-Nazi ties.” He also noted how Bernier recently attacked Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate activist from Sweden. In a series of tweets this month, Bernier questioned the teen’s motivations and called her “mentally unstable.”
“These are not the actions of a person who has earned the privilege of promoting their agenda on a national stage,” Singh wrote.
Though Bernier was in jeopardy of missing the cut for the October events, Johnston determined Monday that the People’s Party leader met two of the three conditions required to get on those stages: candidates in at least 90 per cent of 338 ridings and a reasonable chance at winning multiple seats.
The People’s Party made a case to the commission that they had a shot at victory in Bernier’s Quebec constituency as well as four other ridings. The commission hired EKOS Research to conduct polling in those four ridings and found “more than one in four voters” are considering voting for the party in three of those districts, according to Johnston’s report.
But Singh stated that “most informed political analysts believe [Bernier’s] party is unlikely to gain seats in this election”

Questa mattina a Milano, in Stazione Centrale, si è registrato l’ennesimo episodio di violenza.
Un immigrato ha aggredito alle spalle un carabiniere colpendolo con delle forbici alla gola. L’autore dell’aggressione è Fathe Mahamad, un 23enne di origine yemenita. Dopo la folle violenza è stato subito placcato e arrestato dai carabinieri del terzo battaglione Lombardia. Al momento della cattura si è messo a urlare più volte “Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!”. L’urlo dei terroristi. Tanto è che in serata è stato reso noto che l’immigrato è stato arrestato per attentato con finalità terroristiche, lesioni, violenza e resistenza a pubblico ufficiale.
Nel pomeriggio, il 23enne yemenita è stato interrogato dal pm Alberto Nobili, responsabile del pool dell’antiterrorismo della Procura di Milano, e grazie alle indagini dei carabinieri è stato possibile ricostruire la dinamica dell’aggressione. Nel corso dell’interrogatorio, l’immigrato ha tentato di dare la sua versione dei fatti per cercare di “giustificare” il folle gesto. “Speravo di morire dopo averlo colpito”, ha detto al pm. Ma nel corso degli accertamenti è emerso che proprio poco prima dell’aggressione il 23enne, che aveva un permesso di soggiorno temporaneo e da agosto scorso abitava a Ostiglia (Mantova) presso l’ex Hotel California, era già stato denunciato dai carabinieri dopo essersi rifiutato di scendere dalla tettoia antistante il centro per migranti di via Sammartini.
Al pm, poi, l’immigrato ha anche detto che dopo l’aggressione avrebbe voluto “raggiungere il paradiso di Allah”. A quanto si apprende, lo yemenita ha reso “piena confessione” e la sua viene considerata, almeno allo stato degli elementi accertati, “un’azione solitaria”.

Italian solider stabbed in neck, shoulder by man carrying scissors, shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’
An Italian soldier was stabbed in the neck and shoulder outside a Milan train station Tuesday by a man wielding a pair of scissors and shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
The suspect, identified as Mahamad Fathe, 23, fled on foot after the seemingly unprovoked attack shortly before 11 a.m. in Piazza Duca d’Aosta. Fathe ran toward Via Vittor Pisani but was taken down by paramilitary Carabinieri cops, Milano Today first reported.
Fathe, a foreign national from Yemen, was a regular visitor at Milan Central Railway station.
He purportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar!” – Arabic for “God is greatest!” – as he was being arrested.
The 34-year-old soldier was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, despite the deep wound to his neck.

Corrupt Obama-appointed Judge Amy Berman Jackson tossed out a lawsuit that accused the far left Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC] of attempting to financially destroy the Center for Immigration Studies by labeling it a “hate group.”
The SPLC, a true hate group, targets conservative groups for ruin and puts them in danger with its ‘hit list’ by designating people and groups with its ‘hate group’ labels.
The Center for Immigration Studies accused the SPLC’s leaders of conspiring to violate RICO [Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act] when they labeled them a hate group.
The SPLC asked Judge Jackson to hit the Center for Immigration studies with monetary sanctions, but she declined.
