Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. UAE Moves to Control Social Media (aawsat, Sep 2, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1883161/uae-moves-control-social-media

“The UAE Cabinet directed the National Media Council (NMC) to control social media sites and establish strict standards to enhance UAE’s stature regionally and internationally.

During its Sunday meeting, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, it also directed the Government Communication Office of General Secretariat of the Cabinet to monitor live news and social media feeds and ensure that all federal authorities respond to inquiries and demands of citizens.

Sheikh Mohammed had warned of the social media’s ability to cause chaos in wake of recent reports about the UAE. “The reputation of the UAE is a red line and not to be used by anyone who wants to get more followers,” he said on his Twitter account.

Similarly, Sheikh Mohammed reinforced the need to listen to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and its management of external affairs.

“We will not allow a group of Twitter users to mess with Zayed’s legacy of credibility, love, and respect for people. The good image of the UAE and the Emirati must remain as bright as Zayed wanted and built,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, commented said the UAE’s reputation was built by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, guided by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and is now protected by Sheikh Mohammed.

The committee will draft legal and procedural frameworks to implement Sheikh Mohammed’s directives. It will also submit a 100-day plan to Sheikh Mohammed for improving the performance of government and private institutions, to reinforce the country’s economic and community performance and ensure that its citizens are content.

The meeting approved a range of federal decisions and laws related to the health sector to support public health and provide world-class healthcare services. These decisions aim to create a comprehensive nationwide approach to health, promote cooperation among relevant federal and local authorities.

They aim to create a healthcare system with the participation of all related sectors, to raise the health standards of the community, achieve prosperity and provide healthcare services to all citizens and residents.

The Cabinet adopted a policy to combat communicable diseases, as well as federal draft laws related to public health and restructuring the country’s Health Council.”

  3. Report: Saudi Arabia using human trafficking networks to recruit child soldiers (memo, Sep 2, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190902-report-saudi-arabia-using-human-trafficking-networks-to-recruit-child-soldiers/

“Saudi Arabia has been taking advantage of the dire economic condition in neighbouring Yemen by recruiting Yemeni civilians, including children, via local human trafficking networks to defend its southern border, a new report has revealed.

According to Geneva based human rights monitoring organisation SAM, many Yemenis are entering the kingdom under the pretext of receiving emergency treatment only to be sent to the Yemen-Saudi border to fight for Riyadh. Saudi classes such fighters as mercenaries, however SAM explains this cannot be the case as they belong to a state party in the ongoing conflict.

Over the last four years, the report explained, Saudi Arabia has been enlisting thousands of Yemeni fighters, including children, “using human trafficking networks, to fight on its behalf along its southern border with Yemen”.

This, it continued, was in clear “violation of domestic laws and international conventions, which prohibit the use of civilians to fight”…”

“Lawyers for a Syrian accused of war crimes in the Netherlands for allegedly participating in execution during the country’s civil war denied on Monday that their client was a member of the radical Nusra Front, reports Reuters.

Ahmad al Khedr, also known as Abu Khuder, faces charges of murder and membership of a terrorist group under Dutch universal jurisdiction laws. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty.

This is the first time a Syrian national has been charged with war crimes under Dutch jurisdiction laws. The case against Al Khedr marks only the second time a Dutch court has looked at crimes committed during the war in Syria, the earlier case targeting Dutch Islamists who fought in the conflict…”

  5. Turkish FM: Root causes of migration have to be tackled (memo, Sep 2, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190902-turkish-fm-root-causes-of-migration-have-to-be-tackled/

“Turkey’s foreign minister said Monday in order to tackle the root causes of irregular migration the source countries have to be helped.

Speaking at a panel on multiculturalism at the 14th Bled Strategic Forum in the Slovenian resort town, Mevlut Cavusoglu said the world has failed to deal with the problem of irregular migration.

Cavusoglu said the source countries of migration did not receive the necessary support they needed from other countries.”There are around 70 million displaced persons in the world. This number is more than the displaced persons during WWII,” Cavusoglu said.

He said that Turkey is a transit country for irregular migration.”We have spent $37 billion from the state budget and what we received from the international community is less than $1 billion in addition to what we got from the EU,” Cavusoglu said.”

    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2019/9/2/bernie-sanders-slams-indias-unacceptable-crackdown-in-kashmir

“US lawmaker Bernie Sanders has slammed India’s move to strip Indian-administered Kashmir of its autonomy and the crackdown on dissent that followed.

The Vermont senator made the remarks on Saturday at the annual Islamic Society of North America conference in Houston, Texas.

“I am deeply concerned about the situation in Kashmir where the Indian government has revoked Kashmiri autonomy, cracked down on dissent, and instituted a communications blackout,” Sanders said before the convention’s audience of around 7,000.

“The crackdown in the name of security is also denying the Kashmiri people access to medical care. Even many respected doctors in India have acknowledged that the Indian government imposed restrictions on travel are threatening the life saving care that patients need.”…”

  7. Spain rescues almost 200 migrants in the Mediterranean (reuters, Sep 2, 2019)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-spain/spain-rescues-almost-200-migrants-in-the-mediterranean-idUSKCN1VN241

“Almost 200 people were rescued attempting to make the dangerous crossing from North Africa to Spain on Monday, the coastguard said.

The rescues come amid a debate in Spain over the role that charity boats should play in assisting government efforts after a Spanish non-governmental organization ship was at the center of a standoff with European states last month.

In the Strait of Gibraltar, 73 people were rescued from three boats, among them 10 minors, Spanish rescue services said. Another 110 people were rescued from five boats in the Alboran Sea, the majority of whom will be taken to the port of Malaga.

Arrivals to Spain so far this year by mid-August were a little over 18,000, Interior Ministry data shows, a 39% reduction on the same period last year.

United Nations data show irregular sea arrivals from the Middle East and North Africa to European Union dropped from over 1 million in 2015 to some 141,500 people last year while nearly 15,000 people are estimated to have died or gone missing in the perilous sea voyage.”

  8. NGO ships Eleonore, Mare Jonio land migrants (ansamed, Sep 2, 2019)

“Two NGO migrant rescue ships that had been at the centre of the latest standoffs with outgoing interior minister and anti-migrant league party leader Matteo Salvini on Monday landed their migrants in Sicily and on Lampedusa.

The German NGO migrant rescue ship Eleonore on Monday entered the Sicilian port of Pozzallo near Ragusa.

The ship, run by the NGO Mission Lifeline, has over 100 migrants on board.

It declared a state of emergency on board and ignored an Italian entry ban issued by Salvini.

Police and coast guard officials were waiting on the dock for it to tie up. Salvini’s closed ports policy may be changed by the likely new 5-Star-Democratic Party government.

Italian NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans said Monday it had just heard that the Italian coast guard would allow the last 31 migrants aboard the Mare Jonio ship to land at Lampedusa for health reasons.

“Their odyssey is over and a bit of humanity can be glimpsed on the horizon,” it said.

“Welcome to Europe!” Centre-left Democratic Party (PD) leader Nicola Zingaretti on Monday told Premier-designate Giusepe Conte that a “radical” change was needed from the last government’s closed ports policy led by Salvini.

Another NGO migrant rescue ship, the Alan Kurdi, is still engaged in standoffs with Salvini.

But amid the high-profile standoffs with the NGOs, lower-profile so-called ‘ghost landings of migrants directly from north Africa, not picked up by NGO ships, have been continuing apace.

“What is happening in these hours in the Mediterranean, amid continuous landings on our coasts and inhuman bans, confirms that the immigration policies of the last few months have not solved anything,” said Zingaretti.

“I once more ask premier(-designate) Conte to immediately tackle the situation of persons blocked at sea in conditions of humanitarians emergency and, obviously, we continue to ask that we should gear up for a radical turnaround in the policies on these issues.” The PD’s likely government partner the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) have said they will not change Salvini’s policies.”
