Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. US-Taliban Talks in Doha Fail to Yield Final Peace Deal on Afghanistan (sputniknews, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201909011076693535-us-taliban-talks-in-doha-fail-to-yield-final-peace-deal-on-afghanistan/

“The United States and Taliban have concluded the ninth day of the ninth round of peace negotiations in Qatar with no final agreement in sight, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Saturday.

The issues discussed during the Qatar talks include pulling out foreign armed forces from Afghanistan, a comprehensive ceasefire, prisoner release and future intra-Afghan negotiations.

While some, like Wahidullah Ghazi Khel, the spokesman for the new National Front have hope that the technical teams working on both sides will reach an agreement shortly, the overall attitude regarding the possibility of a deal is not a positive one, the correspondent reported.

After the peace deal is signed, inter-Afghan talks between the Taliban and other political movements are reportedly expected to begin. The Taliban insist that the Afghan authorities should participate in the talks not as a government but as a political movement.

The peace talks, meanwhile, were overshadowed by overnight clashes between the Taliban and the Afghan government forces in Kunduz.

While the Afghan government has claimed that the attack had been successfully repelled, the Sputnik correspondent has reported that there were fears that the fighting could continue and that the Taliban might have a chance to seize the city.

The US-Taliban talks come ahead of the 28 September presidential election in Afghanistan. The Taliban have threatened to disrupt the election, while the government has vowed to safeguard the democratic process.

Conflict-struck Afghanistan has been long torn by fighting between government troops and the Taliban, who are currently negotiating a peace deal with the United States.

US President Donald Trump reiterated on Thursday that he wanted to downsize the US military force in the country but did not offer a timeline for the withdrawal, which is what the Taliban demands.

  2. Rouhani, Macron Discuss JCPOA: Tehran Warns of Its Reduced ‘Reversible’ Nuclear Deal Commitments (sputniknews, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201909011076693799-rouhani-macron-discuss-jcpoa-tehran-warns-of-its-reduced-reversible-nuclear-deal-commitments/

“Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has informed French leader Emmanuel Macron in a phone call that Tehran will launch the third stage in reducing its obligations under the nuclear deal later in September if Europe fails to live up to its part of commitments, noting that this step, as well as the previous ones, will be reversible.

The phone conversation took place on Saturday. It comes as Macron, a staunch advocate of saving the Iran nuclear deal, has been stepping efforts to engage Iran diplomatically.

“If Europe cannot put its commitments into operation, Iran will take the third step in reducing its JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as Iran nuclear deal] commitments, which of course will be reversible”, Rouhani said, cited by his press service.

He also welcomed Paris’ efforts to preserve the deal and described Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s visit to Biarritz during the G7 summit as “very important for the public and political opinions in the region and the world”.

Macron, in turn, called Zarif’s visit “effective”, adding that it “proved Iran’s resolve to defend its interests and its commitment towards a negotiation”.

According to the Mehr news agency, Rouhani also stressed that Iran’s approach is to maintain the JCPOA, the Iranian president stressed “fulfilling the commitments by all parties and guaranteeing the security of free shipping in all waterways, including the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, are two of Iran’s major goals in the ongoing negotiations”.

Moreover, the Iranian president slammed the European leaders for not taking any practical steps to live up to their commitments after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and re-imposition of sanctions on Iran, the Mehr news agency said.

On the first anniversary of the US unilateral pullout from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal on 8 May, Tehran announced that it would start abandoning some parts of its nuclear obligations every 60 days unless European signatories to the deal ensured Iran’s interests under the agreement amid Washington’s reinstated sanctions.

Zarif said earlier that the third phase of reducing nuclear obligations would start on 6 September.

The United States’ decisions prompted France, Germany and the United Kingdom to create a joint mechanism for trade with Iran called INSTEX. Following a meeting of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA in June, the mechanism became operational and available to all EU member states. The trading instrument in its initial stage only covers the supply of medicines, medical equipment, and agricultural products, but Tehran also reportedly seeks to export oil.”

  3. Sweden: Municipality Inundated with Migrants Faces Tax Crisis as Native Swedes Flee (breitbart, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/09/01/sweden-municipality-inundated-with-migrants-faces-tax-crisis-as-native-swedes-flee/

“A Swedish municipality that took in one of the highest numbers of asylum seekers per population faces a crisis as natives move out and decimate the local tax base.

The municipality of Filipstad took in many asylum seekers during the migrant crisis of 2015 and now are facing increasing costs as unemployment among migrants has surged and financial assistance rates have tripled, broadcaster SVT reports.

Claes Hultgren, the local municipal manager, described the situation, saying of the migrant population: “In this group, unemployment and dependency are very high, while education levels are very low. This group runs the risk of ending in an eternal alienation that is already heavily burdening the municipal economy.”

“They are too old maybe and are illiterate, or have a very low educational level. We must then accept that there will be some people who will need the support of society for their livelihood,” Hultgren added.

Adding to the burden has been the exodus of native Swedes, with hundreds of natives leaving between 2012 and 2018 and an even higher number of foreigners arriving during the same period. Statistics show the vast majority of natives who left were of working age.

While job vacancies still do exist in the municipality, the jobs require skills in language and training that few of the migrants possess.

According to another report from SVT, the city of Gothenberg is undergoing a similar problem, with working-age native Swedes moving out of the city to nearby municipalities, often to buy a home, and taking their tax money with them.

While many cities across Sweden are facing housing shortages, the rate of unemployment between native Swedes and migrants is stark.

A 2018 report stated that the unemployment rate for native Swedes was a mere 3.6 per cent while the foreign-born rate was much higher at 19.9 per cent. The city of Malmo, which has a high migration-background population, was shown to have double the national unemployment average.”

    • Another Swedish Municipality That Took In Migrants Faces Economic Crisis (breitbart, Aug 31, 2019)
      https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/31/another-swedish-municipality-that-took-in-migrants-faces-economic-crisis/

“The Swedish municipality of Hässleholm, which took in nearly 3,000 asylum seekers in three years, faces an economic crisis as up to 80 per cent remain on welfare.

Hässleholm City Council chairman Lars Johnsson, a member of the centre-right Moderate Party, said that the Swedish municipality has at least 100 migrants who are illiterate and another 200 with very poor educational backgrounds, saying, “It will in principle be impossible to get them to work,” Kristianstadsbladet reports.

Social assistance costs have drastically increased since 2012, rising from 32 million Swedish krona ($3,259,680/£2,680,320) to 54 million ($5,501,124/£4,523,310) this year. They are predicted to increase by another six million each year.

The municipality says they put away around 30 million krona to cope with the projected costs but already half of that has been spent.

“We would need 100 million krona from the state to go injury-free, to keep our noses above the surface,” Johnsson said.

The main issue behind the crisis is the expiration of the establishment period; a two-year term in which the Swedish national government covers the costs of housing and integrating migrants.

Local Social Democrat politician Lena Wallentheim complained that the period is simply not long enough to integrate migrants into the labour market, saying, “When the Employment Service withdraws, it becomes a double blow. The costs then fall on the municipality, in the form of support grants.”

City Council chairman Johnsson went on to admit the issue should have been tackled years ago, saying, “the fear of discussing the issue has been devastating. It is unfortunate that we have not been able to discuss soberly without the racist card coming out.”

The crisis comes only weeks after the municipality of Bengtsfors petitioned the national government for money, claiming they had taken in far more migrants than the local government could now afford and were facing potential bankruptcy.

Stig Bertilsson, a local Moderate Party politician in Bengtsfors was asked if migrants could help ease the burden by getting jobs and paying income taxes, but he admitted that while he hoped for a long term boost in tax revenue, it had so far not arrived.”

  4. Taliban attack 2nd Afghan city as US envoy says deal is near (abcnews, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/taliban-attack-2nd-afghan-city-us-envoy-deal-65320950

“The Taliban attacked a second Afghan city in as many days on Sunday and killed several members of security forces, officials said, even as Washington’s peace envoy said the U.S. and the militant group are “at the threshold of an agreement” to end America’s longest war.

The attack on the capital of Baghlan province came hours after U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said he warned the Taliban during talks in Qatar that “violence like this must stop.” But he appeared determined to move forward on a deal that plans the withdrawal of some 14,000 remaining U.S. troops in exchange for Taliban guarantees that Afghanistan will not be used as a launch pad for global attacks.

Khalilzad was visiting Kabul on Sunday to brief the Afghan government on a deal that is not yet final. Both he and the Taliban confirmed the latest round of talks had ended.

The attacks are seen as strengthening the negotiating position of the Taliban, who control or hold sway over roughly half of Afghanistan and are at their strongest since their 2001 defeat by a U.S.-led invasion. Some critics warn that the Taliban are merely waiting out the U.S. and that another U.S. goal in the talks, a cease-fire, likely will not happen as foreign troops leave.

In Baghlan the spokesman for the provincial police chief, Jawed Basharat, said gunbattles continued on the outskirts of its capital, Puli Khumri…”

  5. Turkey Ready to Snub U.S., NATO Allies and Buy Russian Warplanes (breitbart, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/middle-east/2019/09/01/turkey-ready-to-snub-u-s-nato-allies-and-buy-russian-warplanes/

“Turkey and Russia have begun talks aimed at letting the former buy Sukhoi Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets from Russia in a direct snub to the Trump administration which nixed a deal that would’ve allowed NATO-ally Ankara to add the new F-35 Lightning II to its combat aircraft fleet.

The talks came after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Russia this week to personally view the new Su-57 at an airshow in Moscow.

“Negotiations are underway, and they will continue,” Erdogan told reportersat the air show. “Representatives of our ministries remain in Russia after the MAKS-2019, and they are working there.”

The U.S. canceled the sale of 100 F-35 fighter jets to Turkey in July after Ankara decided to buy a rival missile air defense defense system from Russia.

Russia’s S-400 is considered one of the most advanced air-defense systems in the world.

The U.S. has long argued Turkey’s purchase of the Russian system not only risks the security of NATO members, it also violates the 2017 law threatening sanctions for any purchase of sophisticated Russian technology — the Countering Russian Influence in Europe and Eurasia Act of 2017.

Trump blamed the Obama administration for never reaching a deal to sell a comparable American missile defense system to Turkey.

Erdogan told state-run media Friday he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the U.N. General Assembly next month, where he said they will talk about the withdrawal of Kurdish troops from northwest Syria. He added Turkey would “take care” of itself if the United States continues to block the Lockheed Martin F-35.”

  6. Canada: Quebec Youth Adopt Islamic Customs in ‘Solidarity’ with Muslims (breitbart, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/09/01/canada-quebec-youth-adopt-islamic-customs-in-solidarity-with-muslims/

“Canada’s French-speaking province of Quebec is seeing a new trend of young non-Muslim people adopting Islamic customs and holidays.

The new phenomenon was first noted by anthropologist Géraldine Mossière who found young people, mostly women, in Montreal who frequented Muslim associations and cafes and began to adopt Islamic practices without ever formally converting, La Presse reports.

According to Mossière, the subjects she met did everything from banning themselves from eating pork to celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“These are young people who have experienced in school a cultural mix conducive to the integration of certain cultural beliefs. Sometimes they do it in solidarity with their Muslim friends. Those who do not go to conversion see Muslim practices as personal development, such as yoga or meditation,” Mossière claimed.

Some women do convert to Islam, with Mossière claiming that the attraction stems from a desire to seek out more traditional female roles, suggesting “They see themselves as Quebecers and Muslim. They adopt a ‘pure Islam free of its origins’ of the patriarchal system which they associate with the culture of the Muslim countries of today.”

“They see Islam as a way to return to the family model of their grandparents, but being more valued than their grandmothers, because, in Islam, the role of mother and wife is sacred and recognized by God,” Mossière added.

Possible social pressure to conform to Islamic norms as an explanation for the trend does not appear to have been considered.

Last year, Quebecers elected the populist-right Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) into power, who campaigned on banning the full-face Islamic veil, along with other religious symbols, for anyone working in the public sector.

The ban was implemented this year in June as Bill 21, and bans teachers, police, and civil servants from wearing religious symbols while working.

In Europe, one of the most prevalent places for Islamic conversion and radicalisation tends not to be universities but the various prisons across the continent.

In the United Kingdom it was revealed in June that Muslim prison gangs were forcing other inmates to convert to Islam or face violence. The Ministry of Justice report found that Muslim gangs were operating in the three high-security prisons they surveyed.”

    • Prior to WWII the people who warned about the danger from Japan and to a much lesser extent China were called racists because they were warning about the Yellow Peril. We stopped hearing this term during and after WWII because China wasn’t a danger to the US until after the fall of the Soviet Union. Now they are a major danger thanks to the left who support every communist nation that exit.

Because of their rapid expansion into the South China Sea, Africa and the Belt and Road adventure China is in a very vulnerable position. China is vulnerable because their economy is so shaky, the reasons for this are:

1: China is an export economy, when the exports slow down their economy suffers. The tariffs are slowing their exports to the US and there isn’t enough demand in the rest of the world to make up for that loss. (The tariffs that China has slapped on US imports is hurting the US but to a much lesser extent. We can sell our agricultural products in other markets, usually the markets where China has purchased food to replace the US food.)

2: Bad Debt in the banking industry. Chinese banks are owned wholly or partially by the Chinese Government (I believe they require over 50% ownership in all banks except this in Hong Kong and Macao. Most of this bad debt (the last I heard it was around twice the Chinese GDP, the GDP the CCP claim which is higher then their real GDP) is loans to high ranking members of the CCP that borrowed the money moved it (illegally) to the western nations and send family members (usually their kids) to the west to get educated and remain here to watch the investments.

3: The Chinese attempt to colonize Africa and to a lesser extend portions of South America. This move has cost China large amounts of money for a much lesser return on their investment. From what I have heard they have yet to make a profit from this adventure. (Which is one of the reaons for the African migration to Europe and North America).

4: The artificial Islands in the South China Sea. These Islands are a very expensive move on the part of the Chinese, one that won’t bring in any money unless China can take absolute control of the South China Sea and exploit all of the mineral rich areas that are one of the reasons they built the islands. The other reasons are to acquire the ability to control who ships what through the South China Sea with the possibility/probability of China charging fees for the movement of materail through their territory. Once again an expensive investment that is not returning any money to China.

5: The string of pearls surrounding India. This attempt to surround India and gain the ability to cut off all land and sea trade with India is another very expensive investments that has yet to make any money for China and probably never will.

6: The Belt and Road imitative: The extremely expensive attempt to create a new silk road to Europe and give China varying degrees of control in Europe and the other regions the road passes through is another non performing investment. This railroad is suppose to make it easier and faster for China to ship to Europe and to remove their trade with Europe and the Mideast from the Sea Routes where the US and our allies can intercept the shipments if tensions raise high enough.

7: The new blue water navy: During the Obama years China built a blue water navy to protect their other expensive moves to seize control in various areas. This in turn caused the neighboring nations to form a loose alliance to prevent China from dominating the region. India is building a Navy that as long as there are other regions China has to keep patrols in will be able to challenge China and make cutting off the India’s sea trade too expensive. Japan started rearming and building ships, with the purchase of the F35s short take off and landing warplanes their helicopter carriers are converted to carriers that are capable of performing a large number of naval jobs. Nam, Indonesia and hte Philippines are building smaller naval vessels to help in any fight against China. China started this arms race during the Obama years and thanks to the fear this has created combined with the memories of Japan during WWII the other nations in that region are not stopping their naval build production now that Donald Trump is in office and the US is once again providing protection. Those nations have learned that when the Dems get control of the White House the US stops providing protection from China and that they have to be in a position to protect themselves. g

8: Trump ordered all American companies to remove their manufacturing facilities from China. A lot of them were already doing this but his order puts pressure on the other to move and strikes another blow against the Chinese economy.

All of the above are costing China large sums that must be paid in US dollars and the HSBC scandal has cut off their ready supply of US dollars. Now the only location that has the ability to provide large sums of US cash is the US Treasury. This gives Trump another massive card that he can plan against the Chinese.

China is trying to play the waiting game until the 2020 election hoping that the Dems (with Chinese help) will win the election and in January of 2021 remove the tariffs and stop the other actions hurting China. Trump knows this and is putting as much pressure on China as possible to get this Trade War resolved as quickly.

China is also slowly increasing the pressure on the Hong Kong protesters hoping that they will cave before the Mainlanders decide they should protest to get their own grievances looked at. Due to the shaky nature of the Chinese economy the pressure on Xi (and there is a lot of pressure by his enemies on the Central Committee) to end the Hong Kong protests. Xi also knows that if he uses the military or even the Military Police that he uses in other areas to crush protests the West will be forced to place sanctions on China and individual Chinese leaders. Xi is in the position of Damned if you do and damned if you don’t, he appears to be trying open intermediation with the Troop rotation. (We saw the new troops rotating in but we didn’t see the old troops rotating out.) Also he is reported to be smuggling some of the hard core MPs into Hong Kong and dressing them as Hong Kong Police to use brutal tactics on the Protesters when they can seperate a group from the main protest. This tactic is probably why the Hong Kong Government is refusing an independent investigation into police brutality.

      • IFF they can hold out to a Demonrat America, they’ve got a plan for Empire.
First thing the Romans did was build roads – for MILITARY use, not trade. (Like our interstate highway system.) China’s already sent armed tanks to Germany!
        https://libertyunyielding.com/2019/07/15/in-a-first-chinese-armor-deploys-to-europe-new-logistical-reality-means-it-wont-be-a-last/

Their would-be adversaries are also major trading partners. Indian industry hurts when China’s hit. The smaller neighbors have to be reminded that China is not anybody’s idea of a good neighbor.

        • Second try, I lost all I had typed on the first.

Yes India has a lot of trade with China, France has a lot of trade with Germany and that has never stopped them from fighting wars. India has been spending a lot of money building a blue water navy to stop China from being able to cut the off from trading with other nations.

Japan is also a major trading partner with China and they are busy building a modern navy and changing their Constitution and laws so they can project force beyond their home islands. Once of my sources says that Japan has a lot more ships built and waiting for crews. These range from small patrol boats up to cruiser class warships as well as helicopter carriers and subs. The Japanese probably wouldn’t like the idea but if push comes to shove Philippine, Vietnamese, Indonesia can provide crews in exchange for owning the ships that survive the war.

Yes the Belt and Road Railroad is designed to be a military transport (the North pioneered this tactic in the Civil War. (It was one of the reasons the North won) This is also one of the reasons for the transcontinental Railroad was build in the 19th Century.

The fact that it is designed to be a military transport doesn’t make it any cheaper to build, and the Chinese still need to make some profit from the parts already built to be able to build the rest of the Railroad. FYI the last I heard (in the 1990s) the max that you can lay track when building a new Rail line is 1 to 5 miles a day. I am from a Railroad family and use to know a lot of people with that information. There were from my fathers generation and have since died.

The armored units in Europe are on their own until China gets the ability to move reinforcements in and move them quickly. This is why they want the Railroad and that is at least one decade from completion. If they start shooting they can do a lot of damage but the European military forces can defeat that small a number of men and machines.

All of the above costs money, money is as essential to fighting a war as soldiers and weapons. Right now China is short of money and is afraid of being hit with sanctions, if they weren’t they would have cracked down on Hong Kong by now.

Also Gordon Chang and a lot of other conservative economists are saying that the Chinese economy is weak. Trumps actions say he knows this and is trying to bring enough pressure on China so they will change their actions but not enough to make them desperate enough to start a way.

Now add in the social unrest in Tibet, the Uyghurs along with the unrest in Hong Kong. Xi is in a nasty position, if he doesn’t crack down his enemies on the Central Committee will remove him from office. If he uses the military to crack down on Hong Kong some of his trade partners will slap sanctions on China. At a time when even the CCP says China is in a recession and he is fighting a Trade War with the nation that buys over half of what China produces he can’t afford sanctions. If sanctions go on it is highly probable that the Chinese economy will collapse, which in turn will collapse a bunch of other nations. With a collapsed economy and three areas of major social unrest it is unlikely the CCP will survive as the Chinese government.

Trump doesn’t want to take the chance that China will lash out with all of the weapons in their inventory during a collapse which is why he is walking such a delicate line in how much pressure he puts on China.

A couple of things I forgot to put in above, a lot of the high ranking members of the CCP are smuggling money our of China and sending their kids to the west to study and then remain to look after the family fortune in the west. Also the bankers and money managers in Hong Kong are moving all of their liquid and semi liquid assets to the US, Europe and Japan. Both groups of people in China are saying (by their actions) that they think the west is a safer place for their money then China. This means they are worried about 1) China trying to steall the liquid assets and 2) an economic crash that would make it impossible to move the liquid assets.

Catholicism was brought to the mainly Maya indigenous region during the Spanish conquest, and in recent decades evangelical Christians have increased in number, but Muslims from Spain also came to Chiapas in the 1990s, bringing their religion with them.

Soon locals began to convert, and now many fuse indigenous culture with Islamic customs.

  8. Russia: Iskander missile system undergoes successful testing in Astrakhan region

Russia’s mobile short-range Iskander ballistic missile system underwent a successful test launch at the Kapustin Yar testing site in southern Russia’s Astrakhan region on Saturday, as seen in footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The ministry reported that military employees successfully destroyed the critically important improvised enemy during the test launch of the Iskander missile system, the result of which was recorded by an Orlan-10 drone.

The Iskander also fulfilled the testing standards for transferring the missile system to a combat position and striking missiles at the indicated coordinates.

  9. Turkey: Ankara to launch own Syria plan unless it controls ‘safe zone’ – Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey will carry out its own plan of action if Turkish troops do not run a “safe zone” in northeast Syria within a few weeks, during a speech at Istanbul’s National Defence University on Saturday.

“Turkey has no time and patience and it wants a safe-zone to be built along the eastern Euphrates line, along Syria, as soon as possible,” Erdogan said during the National Defence University’s graduation ceremony.

“The United Nations General Assembly, which we will attend in three weeks in the United States, will be the last opportunity,” Erdogan said. “If satisfactory steps won’t be taken until that day regarding the safe zone, then there is nothing for us but to take care of our own business, to cut our own umbilical cord by ourselves.”

  10. France: Extinction Rebellion call for action against Amazon wildfires

Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion held a march in Paris on Saturday to call for action against the devastating wild fires raging in the Amazon.

One protester called the forest the “lungs of the Earth,” calling the fires a “catastrophe for biodiversity.” Some activists visualized this in a performance with torches symbolizing the fire, and laying down to symbolise death.

According to reports, over 76,000 fires have been recorded so far this year in the Amazon, an increase of over 80 percent increase as compared to the same period last year.

    • Setback for German coalition as far right surges in regional elections

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and her Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners bled support to the far right in two state elections in eastern Germany on Sunday, dealing a double blow to her already unstable ruling alliance.

Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) remained the largest party in Saxony, but saw their share of the vote drop by 7.4 points from the last election in 2014 to 32%, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) coming second, an exit poll for broadcaster ARD showed.

The AfD harnessed voter anger over refugees and the planned closure of coal mines in the formerly communist eastern states, casting itself as the heir of the demonstrators who brought about the fall of the Berlin Wall three decades ago.

In Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, the left-leaning Social Democrats (SPD) clung on to first place in a state they have run since German reunification in 1990, winning 27.5% of the vote – ahead of the AfD on 22.5%.

The setbacks for the ruling parties were not as major as feared but could still hasten the break-up of the national coalition led by Merkel, who has loomed large on the European stage since 2005 and whose early departure would further unsettle a European Union already unnerved by Brexit.

“Now we need to deliver in the autumn,” said Ralph Brinkhaus, leader of the CDU’s group in the national parliament.

The next few months will be crucial if the already rocky national coalition is to survive until a federal election due in 2021, with the eastern votes, including a third in Thuringia in October, and the direction of policy both critical.

The parties are due to review the coalition, weakened by rows over migrant policy, tax and pensions, by the year’s end. Many SPD members want to quit an alliance that has supported Merkel for 10 of her 14 years in power and rebuild in opposition.

Voters went to the polls in Brandenburg and Saxony against the backdrop of a growing risk of recession in Germany – a threat that is raising tensions between the CDU and SPD as they argue over whether to shift to a more expansive fiscal policy.

Social Democrats, who control the Finance Ministry, want to abandon the government’s so-called “black zero” balanced budget policy and raise investment but Merkel’s conservatives say it is an “indispensable principle” for them.

A coalition collapse could trigger a snap election or result in a minority government – unappealing options for stability-loving Germans. National polls put the conservatives first ahead of the Greens, with the SPD trailing neck and neck with the AfD.

Heavy losses in state votes last year led Merkel, brought up in East Germany, to quit as CDU leader and announce this would be her last term as chancellor.

Urgent: Right-wing AfD soars in elections in Germany’s two eastern states

BERLIN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — The German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Sunday made big gains in parliamentary elections in the eastern states of Brandenburg and Saxony, according to initial results published by local media ARD.

AfD won 22.5 percent of the votes in Brandenburg and 27.5 percent in Saxony, a sharp increase from 12.2 percent and 9.7 percent respectively in the two states five years ago.

  11. Pentagon Confirms Carrying Out Strike on al-Qaeda-Linked Terrorists in Idlib, Syria

Earlier this month, the Syrian Army launched an offensive in the province, citing militants’ constant violations of a ceasefire, and has liberated multiple settlements, including Khan Sheikhoun, which had served as a major strongpoint for anti-government militias and terrorist groups.

The Pentagon has confirmed that the US-led coalition has carried out strikes against the leaders of an al-Qaeda-linked militant group in Idlib province, Syria.

“The removal of this facility will further degrade their ability to conduct future attacks and destabilise the region,” US Central Command spokesman Lt. Col. Earl Brown said, his comments cited by AFP.

Earlier, local media reported that the coalition had launched a missile attack against the headquarters of Hurras ad-Din, an insurgent group affiliated with al-Qaeda* which has waged war with Syrian government forces during the Syrian conflict.

US attacks on non-Daesh (ISIS)* targets in Syria are relatively rare, and the coalition previously reported attacking al-Qaeda linked militants at a meeting of commanders west of Aleppo in late June.

Unconfirmed footage and photos purporting to show the damage caused by Saturday’s strike have appeared online.

According to local media, Saturday’s strike killed over 40 militants and field commanders, with Tahrir al-Sham (Nusra Front)* commander Abu Mohammad al-Julani also reportedly present at the meeting; his fate remains unknown. Commanders of ‘moderate’ armed opposition forces were also said to be at the meeting.

The strike is thought to have completely destroyed the two storey building in which the meeting was taking place. It’s unclear whether the coalition used aircraft or cruise missiles to carry out the strike.

Earlier, the Russian military’s centre for reconciliation announced that a truce would enter force in the Idlib de-escalation zone on Saturday, with the centre calling on the leaders of armed groups operating in the province to stop their provocations and join the peace process instead.

The Syrian Army launched an offensive in Idlib on August 5, liberating multiple villages and settlements and capturing the town of Khan Sheikhoun, which had been under the control of the Nusra Front since 2015. The town had served as a major strategic strongpoint for anti-government militias and terrorist groups during much of the foreign-backed civil conflict in Syria. In 2017, Nusra accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack against local civilians, prompting the Trump administration to launch air strikes against Syrian government targets. Independent investigations later revealed that this ‘chemical attack’ was staged by the White Helmets ‘rescue group’ to give the US a pretext to target Syria. A similar scenario was repeated in Douma, southern Syria, in April 2018.

Following successful operations by the Syrian military across Syria and Syrian Kurdish forces in the country’s north and northeast to free the country from Islamist terrorists, Idlib remains the last major stronghold of terrorist and anti-government opposition fighters in the country, with tens of thousands of armed militants holed up in the country. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are also present in the zone, with Syria and Russia accusing terrorists of attempting to use them as human shields.

At least sixteen militants of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement were killed on August 30 in a supposed raid by the Russian Special Forces.

According to the available information, a unit of the Russian Special Forces raided the militants’ position between the towns of Qasabiyeh and Hursh Abdin in southern Idlib after a successful infiltration.

Sources affiliated with the Ahrar al-Sham Movement acknowledged the group’s losses. The sources also revealed that one of the militants killed in the raid was Basil al-Khatib, a prominent commander who is known by his nom de guerre Abu Dahdah.

A day earlier, the Russian Special Forces killed a field commander of Jaysh al-Nasir and his two guards in a similar raid in northwestern Hama.

  13. ctv news – Ex-Liberal candidate Guillet promises ‘soon the truth will be known by all’

    + video

Fallout continues after the Liberal party’s decision to drop star St-Leonard-St-Michel candidate Hassan Guillet in response to allegations of anti-Semitic comments.

The former iman who delivered a moving prayer at the funeral for the victims of the Quebec City mosque shooting said he’s promising to share information of his own.

“This is not the whole truth and it is not the end,” Guillet wrote on his Facebook page. “Certainly I will not abandon the thousands of people who have believed in me and want real change.

Guillet volunteers held a closed-door meeting hours after the news broke, and Guillet offered an apology Friday but refused interviews Saturday.

“I confirm that I am not anti-Semitic,” he wrote in his apology. “On the contrary, I campaign and will always campaign against all forms of racism including Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.”

He told CTV Saturday that he questioned the timing of the decision coming on the eve of a long weekend, and will have a news conference September 4.

Jewish human rights advocacy group B’nai Brith raised complaints about Guillet celebrating the release of Hamas-aligned activist Raed Salah, who referred to Israel as occupied Palestine, and claimed Jewish people “use children’s blood for baking ‘holy bread’.”

The organization said the remarks were made on social media, and the posts have since been deleted.

In a statement, the Liberals said Guillet’s comments were not in line with the party, and that the Liberals are against all forms of discrimination.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer described the remarks as repugnant and a hateful attack on Israel.

B’nai Brith said it alerted the party to the comments weeks ago.

“I’m surprised it’s taken them this long,” said University of Windsor political science professor Lydia Miljan. “According to B’Nai Brith, they had alerted them about this issue earlier in the month and according to them, they had no response from the Liberals. It was only when they went public today that the Liberals quickly revoked the candidacy. I also find it interesting the Liberals didn’t vet him ahead of time. Why aren’t they doing their own research on candidates?”

Guillet decided to run for the Liberals in June 2018 and give up his role as Imam.

St-Leonard-St-Michel is a Liberal stronghold having gone red every election since it was created in 1988.

The deadline to file a candidate is 21 days before the election, which has to be on or before October 21.

St-Léonard candidate shocked, studying options after being dumped for comments

The Liberal Party of Canada revoked his candidacy after B’nai Brith said comments on social media were ‘troubling, anti-Semitic’. Hassan Guillet denied accusations that he was anti-Semitic.

The former Liberal candidate in St-Léonard—St-Michel said on Saturday that he was “completely shocked” by the Liberal Party of Canada’s unilateral decision to revoke his candidacy three months after he won the nomination.

In a statement sent to Presse Canadienne on Saturday, Hassan Guillet denied accusations that he was anti-Semitic.

“I confirm that I am not anti-Semitic. On the contrary, I oppose and will always campaign against all forms of racism, including Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, “the statement said.

Guillet added that he had not resigned and that he was studying all the options with his team.

He said he would hold a press conference Wednesday, where he will provide an update on the situation.

The Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) revoked Guillet’s candidacy on Friday after B’nai Brith brought to its attention statements Guillet had made on social media.

The party said the comments were not consistent with its values ?.

B’nai Brith described the comments as “troubling, anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli”.

B’nai Brith provided links to the statements, which have been deleted.

In one of the comments, dated July 8, 2017, Guillet welcomes the release, “after nine months in a prison in occupied Palestine”, of Raed Salah, whom he describes as a “resister” and a “jihadist”.

“We congratulate Sheikh Salah on his release and resistance. We ask Allah to speed up the release of all the prisoners as well as those from the Al-Aqsa Mosque and all of Palestine, “he wrote in Arabic.

“Mr. Guillet celebrated the release of a militant close to Hamas, “said Michael Mostyn, chief executive of B’nai Brith.

Mostyn also pointed to an interview Guillet gave in Spanish to Radio Canada International in December 2017, in which he commented on Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Another motive is his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, an ultra-Orthodox Jew and a pro-Israel fundamentalist. During the elections, Mr. Trump said America First, (but …) but now with his son-in-law, it’s changed to Israel First,” Guillet can be heard says in the interview.

“Jewish control of governments is a classic anti-Semitic trope” Mostyn said in a telephone interview. “To claim that citizens have double loyalty because they are Jewish, that they are loyal to Israel and the country where they hold citizenship is another classic anti-Semitic metaphor,” he added.

Guillet won the hotly contested nomination in May. The riding has traditionally been represented by a candidate of Italian origin.

Guillet, an engineer and former imam who speaks six languages, attracted international attention for the eulogy he delivered at the funeral of worshippers murdered in a mass shooting at Quebec City mosque on Jan. 29, 2017. At that time, he referred to the killer, who murdered six men, as a victim. J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, called his words “extraordinary and humane.”

CBC – Dumped by Liberals over anti-Semitism allegations, Hassan Guillet explores options

Just weeks before the federal election campaign gets into full swing, Quebec candidate Hassan Guillet was canned by the Liberal Party on Friday after a national Jewish organization accused him of making anti-Semitic comments.

But Guillet, who denies all allegations, is not throwing in the towel just yet.

He says he has not resigned and “I do not betray the dreams of all those who believed in me and gave me their trust.”

The statement was published to his Facebook page late Saturday evening. Guillet says he and his team are studying all options and he will hold a press conference on Wednesday in the Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel riding.

“I am completely shocked by the decision of the Liberal Party of Canada to unilaterally withdraw my candidacy three months after winning the nomination contest according to the rules of the party itself,” he wrote.

Guillet, a member of the Council of Quebec Imams, gained national attention after delivering a speech in Quebec City honouring victims of the Quebec mosque shooting.

    Allegations of anti-Semitism

Last week the Liberals revoked his candidacy after, in a statement on its website, B’nai Brith Canada said Guillet praised a Hamas-aligned activist, Raed Salah.

The Jewish service organization alleged Guillet had a history of making anti-Semitic comments on social media.

In a post on his Facebook account on Friday, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “do the right thing, immediately condemn these anti-Semitic comments, and fire this candidate.”

    The Liberals did just that.

“The insensitive comments made by Hassan Guillet are not aligned with the values of the Liberal Party of Canada,” the party said in a media statement.

And now Liberal members of parliament have been distancing themselves from Guillet.

“For past 4 years, Liberal Party has been a steadfast friend of Israel and has taken a strong stand against anti-Semitism in Canada and around the world. Mr Guillet does not represent these values,” Toronto’s York Centre MP Michael Levitt tweeted on Friday.

B’nai Brith Canada commended the Liberal Party’s decision to dump the candidate.

The organization’s chief executive officer, Michael Mostyn, tweeted it is “satisfying to see such a speedy reaction” to the allegations.

The Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel has long been a Liberal stronghold, dating back to when it was first formed in 1988.

    Guillet counters claims

Guillet, on the other hand, says the claims against him are false.

“I confirm that I am not anti-Semitic,” Guillet said in a statement. “On the contrary, I campaign and will always campaign against all forms of racism including Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.”

Earlier on Saturday, Guillet made a Facebook post saying, “This is not the whole truth and it is not the end.”

“Certainly I will not abandon the thousands of people who have believed in me and want real change. Soon the truth will be known by all. We have an appointment with history.”

  17. Protesters rally at Hong Kong airport to disrupt travel

HONG KONG, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Hong Kong’s international airport on Sunday, disrupting travel in a bid to focus global attention on their fight for greater democracy in a city facing its biggest political crisis in decades.

Trains to the airport were suspended and traffic was congested after protesters urged the public to overwhelm road and rail links to one of the world’s busiest airports.

But passengers continued to enter and leave the terminal freely, and planes were still taking off. Rain fell as a tropical depression approached Hong Kong from the southeast.

Authorities raised the number three typhoon signal, warning of a possible heavy storm on its way.

Police warned the airport gathering was illegal and said they would soon conduct a “dispersal operation”.

“The police warn all protesters to stop their illegal acts and leave immediately,” they said in a statement.

Sunday’s demonstration comes after police and protesters clashed overnight in some of the most intense violence since unrest erupted more than three months ago over concerns Beijing was planning to erode the autonomy granted to the city when it was handed back to China from Britain in 1997.

“The French prosecutor says the Afghan man detained for a deadly knife attack was in a “psychotic state” and under the influence of drugs, and shows no signs of links to terrorism.

Lyon prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet said Sunday a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect found he was in a “paranoid delirium” and said he “heard voices” telling him to kill.

  21. This is the most important religious liberty decision since Masterpiece Cakeshop
By LU Staff September 1, 2019

A federal appeals court has revived a legal challenge to the Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA), ruling for the first time that religious business owners can invoke free speech rights when refusing to service a same-sex wedding.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Carl and Angel Larsen, a Christian couple who operate a video production company called Telescope Media Group. The Larsens want to expand their business to include weddings, but state officials say the MHRA requires the Larsens to accommodate both same-sex and opposite sex partners.

“Minnesota’s interpretation of the MHRA interferes with the Larsens’ speech in two overlapping ways,” Judge David Stras wrote for a divided three-judge panel. “First, it compels the Larsens to speak favorably about same-sex marriage if they choose to speak favorably about opposite-sex marriage. Second, it operates as a content-based regulation of their speech.”

  22. Facebook’s laughably pathetic response to damning photo of Biden with KKK member

You just have to love how Facebook immunizes itself against fake news. In 2017, the social media giant partnered with Politifact and Snopes, two leading “fact-checkers,” to ferret out misinformation that appeared on its pages. Earlier this year, Snopes withdrew from the partnership, though it continues independently to peddle its own half-truths.

In fact, Snopes came to the same conclusion as Politifact regarding a troubling photo for Democrats that appeared on Facebook’s pages. The image, which appears above, shows then-Sen. Joe Biden at a campaign event with Sen. Robert Byrd, who is remembered for personally filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for 14 hours. Although Byrd later claimed he regretted the move, he nevertheless went on to oppose the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

But the fact of Byrd’s life that members of both parties find unforgivable is that in the early 1940s, he recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in his home state of West Virginia.

So what was Politifact’s and Snopes’s rating of the photo of Biden with Byrd? Both sources found it “mostly false.”

  23. Trump schedules Beverly Hills fundraiser. Actress Debra Messing wants to ‘out’ attendees
By LU Staff September 1, 2019

On Sept. 17, the Hollywood Reporter reports, the Trump Victory Committee — a joint fundraising effort by the Republican National Committee (RNC) and 11 state Republican committees — will host a fundraiser for Donald Trump’s reelection in Hollywood. Tickets for the event are running as high as $100,000 per couple.

One Tinseltowner who won’t be attending the event is Debra Messing, a far-left actress who has made it clear through her actions in recent years that she doesn’t like Trump and isn’t too wild about the country.

Messing is well within her rights as an American citizen to oppose the president and what he stands for. Apparently, she doesn’t believe Americans with the opposite view are entitled to their, judging from a tweet she posted in reaction to the Hollywood Reporter article:

  24. Seventh illegal alien arrested in Montgomery County, MD on sex abuse charges
By Daily Caller News Foundation September 1, 2019

milio Carrasco-Hernandez was arrested in Montgomery County, Maryland, for allegedly raping a minor, making him at least the seventh illegal alien to be recently arrested for sex crimes.

Carrasco-Hernandez, a 37-year-old Honduran national, was arrested by local authorities for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl, according to a police report first obtained by ABC 7 News. He was previously deported from the U.S. in April 2017, but was able to reenter the country sometime afterward.

Montgomery County Police Special Victims Investigations began looking into sexual abuse allegations against Carrasco-Hernandez on Aug. 25, the date when the attack allegedly took place. The 15-year-old girl was in her grandmother’s bedroom when Carrasco-Hernandez allegedly pulled down her pants and underwear, and began to bite down on her breasts, according to the police report.

  26. Hezbollah Attacks Israel: United Nations Force In Lebanon Fails To Keep Peace

The Hezbollah terror group fired several anti-tank guided missiles at an army base and a military jeep just inside northern Israel’s border with Lebanon on Sunday afternoon, causing no injuries, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Military sources said that the vehicle was empty when it was struck, but that soldiers had been inside half an hour earlier. IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus initially said that the armored jeep had been painted with a red Jewish star, identifying it as an ambulance, but later retracted the claim and clarified that the vehicle had been used as an ambulance but was not marked as such.
In response to the attack, the Israeli military said its artillery cannons and attack helicopters fired approximately 100 shells and bombs at Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said no Israelis were so much as “scratched” by the Hezbollah attack. “There were no Israeli injuries, not even a scratch,” Netanyahu said, smiling, at the opening of a Honduras diplomatic office in Jerusalem.

Clearly the United Nations Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has failed to maintain peace and ensure that Hezbollah stop their attacks on Israel. U.N. peacekeepers were sent to Lebanon in 1978 following the passage of U.N. Security resolutions 425 and 426.

  27. Right-Wing AfD Party Makes Historic Gains in East Germany Elections, Exit Poll Shows (sputniknews, Sep 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201909011076699000-right-wing-afd-party-makes-historic-gains-comes-2nd-after-cdu-in-east-germany-elections-exit-polls/

“Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. (06:00 GMT) on Sunday in Germany’s eastern states of Brandenburg and Saxony, which in total have over 5 million residents eligible to vote in the regional elections.

Exit polls indicate big gains for Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party that has managed to win over Merkel’s CDU party in Germany’s state of Brandenburg, gaining 22,5 percent of votes against CDU’s 15,5 percent. However, the palm of victory has been obtained by the SPD that has gained 27,5 percent of the votes.

At the same time, exit polls in the state of Saxony have shown that CDU receives 32 percent of people’s support while the AfD stands behind by five percent, gaining 27,5 percent of the votes.

Exit polls show a drastic shift of public support towards the right-wing forces as, during the last elections in 2014, the AfD gained just 9,7 percent of votes in Saxony and 12,2 percent in Brandenburg.

The results could have shock wave consequences for the already floundering government coalition of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats with the centre-left Social Democrats.

In 2017, AfD, which has adopted a tough anti-migrant stance, entered Bundestag for the first time in the party’s history.”

We are going through a great mass derangement. In public and in private, people are behaving in ways that are increasingly irrational, feverish, herd-like and unpleasant. The news is filled with the consequences. Yet while we see the symptoms everywhere, we don’t see the causes.

Various explanations have been given, usually involving Donald Trump, Brexit, or both. But these explanations don’t get to the root cause of what is happening. For beneath all the day-to-day madnesses – over race, sex, sexuality, gender and the rest – are much greater movements and much bigger events. Even the origin of this mass derangement is rarely acknowledged. This is the simple fact that we have been living through a period of more than a quarter of a century in which all our grand narratives about our existence have collapsed.

Religion went first, falling away from the 19th Century onwards. Then, over the past century, the secular hopes held out by all political ideologies followed. In the latter part of the 20th Century, we entered the post-modern era, defined by its suspicion towards grand narratives.
