Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. GREECE – More than 600 refugees arrive on Lesbos in one day in record high since migrant crisis

More than 600 refugees arrived by boat to the Greek island of Lesbos on Thursday, the highest single influx since the height of the migrant crisis.

Sixteen rubber dinghies carrying about 650 mostly Syrian and Afghans, including 240 children, reached the Aegean island, while some had to be rescued from the water.

“It surprised us. It’s highly unusual to have so many boats at the same time, it’s an anomaly,” Boris Cheshirkov, spokesman for the United Nation’s refugee agency in Greece told the Telegraph. “It’s the highest number in a single day for three years. We can’t say for certain what the reason is.”

Hundreds have been arriving in Greece from Turkey each week, despite a deal struck between Turkey and the European Union which saw Ankara receives billions in funding from the bloc in return for stemming the flow.

But Thursday’s mass arrival was the largest of its kind since 2016, when the agreement came into effect.

Nikos Dendias, Greece’s foreign minister, summoned the Turkish ambassador to “express Greece’s deep discontent” at the recent increase in arrivals with Turkey. The ambassador said Ankara was “committed” to the deal and that its policy had not changed after being asked how so many were managing to make it Greek shores.

In the first two weeks of August 1,929 migrants arrived on Lesbos, compared with 479 in the same period last year.

They have joined the 10,000 others being held in Moria detention facility, which has been described by humanitarian organisations as overcrowded, unsafe and inhumane.

“Usually the factors that drive people to cross the sea from Turkey are warm weather and an increased volatility in their home countries, such as Syria and Afghanistan,” Mr Cheshirkov said.

Turkey’s foreign minister warned on Friday that an assault by President Bashar al-Assad’s government on Idlib province in neighbouring Syria, the last rebel-held territory in the country, was threatening to trigger a fresh exodus of refugees trying to flee.

Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the continued attacks by the Syrian regime, supported by Russia, could unleash another wave to Europe.

Turkey is hosting more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees – three times the number accepted by the whole of Europe.

It has been warning that it cannot accommodate any more refugees and has in recent weeks been deporting hundreds back to the war-torn country in contravention of international law.

The regime’s offensive on Idlib, which is home to over three million people, began in April and has intensified in recent weeks. According to war monitors more than 1,500 civilians have been killed and as many as 500,000 have been internally displaced, with the UN saying it threatens to be the biggest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.

On Friday, thousands protested at Syria’s closed border with Turkey. Some managed to break through the barriers, where they were met by live bullets and tear gas fired by Turkish forces. There were unconfirmed reports of casualties.

Syria’s opposition has been backed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his government in the fight against Assad and his sponsor Russia.

However, Turkey has in recent months become closer with Moscow, leaving some in Idlib to feel betrayed.

Protesters burned pictures of Mr Erdogan, who was photographed on Thursday eating ice cream with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit by the former to Moscow.

“You disappointed us and you can’t protect us, so open your borders,” one demonstrator chanted. “Let us go to Europe.”

    • Greece: New Right-wing Govt to Strengthen Borders, Deport Fake Refugees Faster (breitbart, Aug 31, 2019)
      https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/31/greece-new-right-wing-govt-strengthen-borders-deport-fake-refugees-faster/

“Greece’s prime minister and his national security advisers decided Saturday to transfer refugees from overcrowded migrant camps on its eastern islands to the mainland and accelerate the deportation of rejected applicants for asylum without giving them the right to appeal.

The Greek government’s Council on Foreign Affairs and Defence also agreed while meeting for several hours Saturday to increase border surveillance and to activate a 50-million-euro integrated maritime surveillance system that the previous government didn’t put in place. Greece will also boost the coast guard’s fleet with 10 new speedboats.

Government spokesman Stelios Petsas said the council also decided to reunite 116 unaccompanied minors living in Greek migrant camps with their families residing in other European Union countries.

Petsas charged that the previous leftist government had done nothing about “thousands of cases” of people whose asylum applications had been rejected by courts. “The police have already detected 1,000 cases” and will take immediate steps to arrest these individuals, he said in his statement.

The meeting was called after the mass arrival Thursday of nearly 600 refugees and other migrants on the island of Lesbos.

The Moria migrant camp on Lesbos is overcrowded, with over 10,200 people housed in a space designed for 3,000.

Hundreds of people continue to head to Greece from Turkey each week, despite a European Union-Turkey deal restricting new arrivals to the islands pending deportation or a successful asylum application. But Thursday’s mass arrival was the largest of its kind since 2016, when the deal with Turkey came into effect.”

        • That was a comedy show but the Home Guard were old, tired but a lot of them knew enough to tear you a new one before you killed them. These are the people who marched at Chemnitz and who will end up saving Europe for the Europeans. These aren’t Summer Soldiers and Sunshine Patriots these are the people who took on the world, won and then decided they didn’t want to own the world. Some of them have changed their minds and others are just out to teach you to leave them alone.

  2. The Hong Kong protesters are starting their 13th week of protests.

Hong Kong police fire tear gas, water cannon at protesters outside government headquarters

    • Hong Kong protesters build wall, set fire on a main street

HONG KONG (AP) — A large fire blazed across a main street in Hong Kong on Saturday night, as protesters made a wall out of barricades and set it afire. Hundreds of protesters gathered behind the fire, many pointing laser beams that streaked the night sky above them.

Earlier, the protesters threw objects and gasoline bombs over barriers set up at government headquarters. Police on the other side responded with tear gas and blue-colored water fired from a water cannon.

The protesters retreated when police arrived on the street to clear them from the area, but reassembled and built the wall and set the fire on Hennessey Road in the city’s Wan Chai district. Police had yet to confront them while the fire blazed.

A march to mark the fifth anniversary of China’s decision against fully democratic elections in Hong Kong was not permitted by police, but protesters took to the streets anyway in the 13th straight weekend of demonstrations.

The mostly young, black-shirted protesters took over roads and major intersections in shopping districts as they rallied and marched. Police erected additional barriers and brought out two water cannon trucks near the Chinese government office and deployed at various locations in riot gear.

  3. Brawl at Iraqi engagement party in Hanover, Germany: one officer was attacked and injured during police operation+++
On Thursday evening, the police deployed a large number of officers to a rampant Iraqi engagement party in Hanover. At 11.09 p.m. a brawl had been reported at the Bomond event centre on Badenstedter Street (Linden-Mitte district).According to initial estimates, about 150 to 200 people were involved in the brawl. In front of the building, the police officers faced about 100 people, some of whom were very upset. In the course of the first interrogations it could be determined that there had been a brawl between several persons during the festivities. In this regard, the police are investigating for dangerous and simple bodily injury. During the interrogation, the 33-year-old guest ran towards the 40-year-old police officer and tried to knock him over. The policeman was able to prevent this with the help of a colleague and then to arrest the guest. The attacker scratched the 40-year-old officer in the face and slightly injured him. Only when other police car patrols arrived at Badenstedter Street the situation could be reassured. Now the 33-year-old has to answer for assault and battery.

  4. AI-powered cameras become new tool against mass shootings
    By IVAN MORENOyesterday

Paul Hildreth peered at a display of dozens of images from security cameras surveying his Atlanta school district and settled on one showing a woman in a bright yellow shirt walking a hallway.

A mouse click instructed the artificial intelligence-equipped system to find other images of the woman, and it immediately stitched them into a video narrative of where she was currently, where she had been and where she was going.

There was no threat, but Hildreth’s demonstration showed what’s possible with AI-powered cameras. If a gunman were in one of his schools, the cameras could quickly identify the shooter’s location and movements, allowing police to end the threat as soon as possible, said Hildreth, emergency operations coordinator for the Fulton County School District.

But as the tall tale was first reported on there, the flub has metastasized into the 800-pound gorilla on the campaign trail, and everybody and his uncle is feeling the need to weigh in.

“Turkey’s president has threatened to launch a unilateral offensive into northeastern Syria if plans to establish a so-called safe zone along Turkey’s border fail to meet his expectations.

Speaking to graduates of a military academy in Istanbul on Saturday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the U.S. had up to three weeks to satisfy Turkish demands.

Earlier this month, Turkish and U.S. officials agreed to set up the zone east of the Euphrates River. Ankara wants U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters, considered terrorists by Turkey, to pull back from the border.

Turkey has been pressing to control — in coordination with the U.S. — a 19-25 mile (30-40 kilometer) deep zone within civil war-ravaged Syria, running east of the Euphrates all the way to the border with Iraq.”

  9. Taliban launch ‘massive attack’ on Afghan city of Kunduz (abcnews, Aug 31, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/afghan-government-taliban-attacking-city-kunduz-65307946

“The Taliban launched a large-scale attack on Kunduz, one of Afghanistan’s main cities, killing at least three civilians and wounding more than 70 others, government officials said Saturday, even as the insurgent group continued negotiations with the United States on ending America’s longest war.

The militants, who have demanded that all foreign forces leave Afghanistan, now control or hold sway over roughly half of the country and are at their strongest since their 2001 defeat by a U.S.-led invasion. Such attacks are seen as strengthening their negotiating position.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the main intersection in Kunduz after hours of efforts by Afghan security forces to push the militants into the city’s outskirts, provincial council member Ghulam Rabani Rabani told The Associated Press. He confirmed there were casualties in the attack that occurred as the police chief and others were at the scene.

The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Afghan officials confirmed casualties among security forces in the day of fighting but did not say how many and said at least 60 Taliban fighters had been killed. As night fell, they said gun battles continued on the outskirts of Kunduz, a strategic crossroads with easy access to much of northern Afghanistan as well as the capital, Kabul, about 200 miles (335 kilometers) away.

Presidential spokesman Sediq Seddiqi told reporters the attack was “completely against the peace talks.”

The bodies of at least three civilians and two members of the security forces were taken to the Kunduz hospital and at least 80 wounded civilians of all ages had been treated, including women and children, said the provincial health director, Esanullah Fazeli. At least nine of them were wounded in the suicide attack, he said.

Rabani said the insurgents briefly took control of the hospital earlier in the day, but Fazeli said the fighters left after staffers told them the patients could be hurt in any cross fire.

“In a way we are thankful that the Taliban accepted what they were told,” he said.

The Taliban launched the “massive attack” from several different points overnight, said Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, spokesman for the provincial police chief, who reported “intense gun battles” around the city.

Hours later the Afghan defense minister, Asadullah Khalid, rejected speculation that Kunduz had collapsed. Security reinforcements had arrived in the morning from Kabul and repelled Taliban fighters from the city, he told the local TOLO news channel.

Officials with the NATO mission in Afghanistan did not immediately respond to a question about whether its forces were responding to the attack.

The Taliban have continued bloody assaults on civilians and security forces even as their leaders meet with U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad in Qatar to negotiate an end to nearly 18 years of war.

Talks continued Saturday, a Taliban spokesman said. Both sides in recent days have signaled they are close to a deal. The Afghan presidential spokesman said Khalilzad will visit Kabul at some point to brief the government on the details.

One Afghan analyst, former deputy interior minister Mirza Mohammad Yarmand, said the attack on Kunduz showed the Taliban are not interested in a cease-fire, which has been a key issue in the Qatar talks.

The United States in the negotiations has also sought Taliban guarantees that Afghanistan will no longer be a launching pad for terror attacks such as the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the U.S. by al-Qaida. The Taliban government had harbored al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Some 20,000 U.S. and NATO forces remain in Afghanistan after formally ending their combat role in 2014. They continue to train and support Afghan forces fighting the Taliban and a local affiliate of the Islamic State group.

Many Afghans worry that an abrupt departure of foreign troops will leave Afghan forces vulnerable and further embolden the Taliban, who already portray a U.S. withdrawal as their victory.

“We have lost the city in the past and know the Taliban can attack again from insecure areas,” a lawmaker from Kunduz, Fatima Azizi, told the local Ariana television channel on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, civilians are again the victims,” she said.

The Taliban seized Kunduz, at the heart of a major agricultural region near Tajikistan, for around two weeks in 2015 before withdrawing in the face of a NATO-backed Afghan offensive. The insurgents pushed back into the city center a year later, briefly raising their flag before gradually being driven out again.”

  14. Putin’s 20th Anniversary as the Leader of Russia

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Vladimir Putin’s government might be proud of many internal as well as foreign achievements, but strategically, Russia has fallen well behind the West. Putin is partly to blame, though titanic shifts in world politics and Russian history have dwarfed his ability to influence events. Russia’s geography and poverty also limit his ability to pull off grand reforms inside the country.

This month marks Vladimir Putin’s 20th anniversary at the helm of the Russian state. (He was nominated as president on December 31, 1999, but had become prime minister in August of that year.) Before that, he was head of the state security apparatus. Putin’s rise was meteoric, and it led him directly to the Kremlin.

Twenty years of rule is remarkable for any leader, and Putin has much to be proud of. Under his rule, Russia rejoined the club of global decision makers. The country’s economic situation has improved exponentially. The fight against terrorism inside Russia has been largely successful, notwithstanding the attacks that took place at the beginning of Putin’s tenure in the early 2000s. The Russian army has also improved its position. Moscow’s influence has expanded to Venezuela, the African continent, Syria (where Russia had had a presence dating back to the Soviet era), and other locations.

A teenager was killed and another nine wounded, three seriously, in a knife attack near the French city of Lyon, a regional official and emergency services said.
The one fatality is believed to be a 19-year-old man.
Two men, one armed with a knife and the other with a metal skewer, carried out the attack in Villeurbanne, a Lyon suburb, in southeastern France, the official said, without giving further details on the motive for the stabbing.
Video recorded by eyewitnesses showed a 33-year-old Afghan man arrested but police are hunting the second perpetrator who managed to flee from the scene.
The attack took place close to a metro station.
An AFP journalist at the scene witnessed a body being taken away in an ambulance and traces of blood on the ground.
“Two men were involved in the attack at around 4.30. One carried a kitchen knife and the other a kitchen spit,” a police source said. “They targeted a 19-year-old man, who died at the scene, while nine others were also hurt, three very seriously.”
In May, a parcel bomb in front of a baker’s shop in central Lyon left 14 people slightly injured.
The perpetrator, a young radicalised Algerian, who was arrested three days later, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, according to his confession.

August 28, 2019 (Daily Signal) — A lawyer representing PragerU in federal court says Google’s reasons for denying some viewers access to videos produced by the conservative education organization on the tech giant’s YouTube subsidiary defy belief.

“To suggest that PragerU’s content is obscene, violent, hate speech is an absolute insult to the intelligence of the American public and people like yourself, who are willing to enter the important political dialogue,” Peter Obstler, PragerU’s lead attorney, told reporters and others at a press conference Tuesday in Seattle.

Obstler spoke to reporters after both sides presented oral arguments in Prager University v. Google LLC before the Seattle-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The marble-decorated building, which is named after the Prophet Mohammed, can hold more than 30,000 people and was described by the Chechen authorities as the “largest and most beautiful” mosque in Europe.

An Uzbeki architect designed the 9,700 square metre holy site.

The mosque’s flower-lined grounds can accommodate an additional 70,000 worshippers, Chechen authorities said.

The opening of the mosque was attended by the UAE Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Abdullatif Al Sheikh, and the Kuwaiti Amiri Diwan adviser and chairman of the International Islamic Charitable Organisation (IICO) Dr Abdullah Al Maatouq.

The secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Yousef Al Othaimeen, was also present for the opening, while the Muslim World League secretary general Mohammed bin Abdul Karim Al Issa delivered the first Friday sermon to be given in the mosque, the Saudi Gazette reported.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said the mosque, which is located in Shali – a town near to the regional capital of Grozny – was “unique in its design and majestic in its size and beauty”.

  19. WASHINGTON — A woman tossed a lit Molotov cocktail into the lobby of a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Oakland Park, Florida. But no major injuries were reported, according to a report of the incident sent to administration officials and viewed by The Associated Press.

The woman walked into the office Friday afternoon and hurled a bottle filled with gasoline and a lit fuse. But the fuse disconnected from the bottle and didn’t ignite, according to the report. Law enforcement officials believe she intended to cause harm but the incident wasn’t related to other incidents where Homeland Security agencies were targeted.

The incident comes amid federal investigators’ growing concerns about attacks on immigration agencies during a time of heightened emotion and scrutiny. The issue remains a political powder keg for both Democrats and Republicans as Trump continues to push for major changes on his signature issue and tries to energize his base by delivering on campaign promises.

Oh boy… how federal Judge Emmet Sullivan will handle this latest motion from Mike Flynn’s attorney Sidney Powell is an unknown; however, the content is delicious.

In an explosive response filing today, which includes the phrase”sunlight is the best disinfectant”, attorney Sidney Powell has outlined the soup-to-nuts construct of the malicious government action taken during their targeting her client Michael Flynn.

In the 19-pages (full pdf below), Ms. Powell walks through the history of the DOJ, FBI and intelligence apparatus weaponization against Mr. Flynn and lays out the background behind everything known to have happened in 2016, 2017 through today.

From the corrupt DOJ lawyers who were working with Fusion-GPS and Chris Steele, including Mr. Weissmann, Mr. Van Grack and Ms. Zainab Ahmad; to the 2015/2016 FISA database search abuses; to the CIA and FBI operation against Flynn including Nellie Ohr; to the schemes behind the use of DOJ official Bruce Ohr; to the corrupt construct of the special counsels office selections; to the specifics within the malicious conspiracy outlined by hiding FBI interview notes of Mike Flynn,… all of it…. Is a stunning filing that many CTH readers are well prepared to understand.

Rep. Ilhan Omar has tweeted in support of an organization listed as a top financier for terrorism. (AP Images)
Rep. Ilhan Omar has publicly declared her support for a notorious organization known for its terrorist leadership and financing of terrorism. But it almost went unnoticed, until the tweet was brought to my attention.

On the 26th of August, Rep. Ilhan Omar made the following tweet:

    Ilhan Omar
    ?
    @IlhanMN
Somali government and peacekeeping forces, need to protect @Hormuud and the Somali telecom industry as they make enormous contribution to the economy and provide vital services.

During my visit to Somalia in 2011, I was surprised by the quick evolution of technology in Somalia. https://twitter.com/harunmaruf/status/1165563011513368577

    “Peacekeeping forces”?

Mrs. Omar has publicly called for the protection of Hormuud. Yet Hormuud Telecom has been mentioned as a sponsor of terrorism, not once, not twice, but many, many times.

    What is Hormuud?
Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc. is a private Somalian telecommunications company founded by Ahmed Nur Ali Jimale in April of 2002.

Ahmed Nur Ali Jimale, Founder of Hormuud and Financier of Al-Shabab Terrorist Organization.
The United Nations Security Council’s Report of the Secretary-General on the situation in Somalia, dated 20 July 2009, contained the following paragraphs involving the activities of Ahmed Nur Ali Jimale, his company Hormuud and his direct support for al-Shabaab, a jihadist militant Islamic terrorist group in Somalia (pages 10-11):

“Ali Ahmed Nur Jim’ale (Jim’ale) has served in leadership roles with the former Somali Council of Islamic Courts, also known as the Somali Islamic Courts Union, which was a radical-Islamist element. The most radical elements of the Somali Islamic Courts Union eventually formed the group known as al-Shabaab.

TL;DR: Ilhan Omar has called for the protection of the private company of the grandfather of Al-Shabab.

    Weapons cache disovered
Romulus, Mich. – On August 18, a Chinese national arrived at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Beijing. When first encountered, the passenger gave a negative declaration to carrying any prohibited items. During an examination of the traveler’s luggage, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers discovered undeclared ballistic armor and other tactical apparel. CBP Officers also discovered evidence that the traveler possessed a significant weapons cache at his U.S. residence, which appeared to include prohibited items.
