Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. The three-legged stool of global war, NeoMarxism, Islam and money, now sees this triad in full kinetics with President Trump’s historic designation of China as a Currency Manipulator. This designation forces the IMF to enact policies to negate those manipulations in order counterbalance the Yuan, as I understand it. This is a massive development which will have corresponding political and economic repercussions at home and abroad. I include the ZH link because its coverage includes relevant charts.

  2. I sometimes send my comments verbatim to an East European friend and he, concerned, asked me why I was so enraged. I replied that the themes of the inverted Trinity of the right hemisphere’d demon haunted world are always the same.

Notwithstanding the child has to leave the mother to develop this independence of brain duality for themselves, in the face of a society moved from bullying or infantilising children, to bullying or infantilising mothers and then the fathers for the Religion or the State. Stoicism or narcissism then follow: Islam or Socialism. Willing slaves to the cruel overlords of Islam or freedoms of Communism. Your own prisons without an internal father-guide. Submission is to fate or to whimsical luck. Moribund muslims or gambling Chinese are the fruit. An Eternal Hate Crime or always a newly decreed one. How else is one to live out slavery?

Marcus Aurelius was fated to lead Rome, he was forced by duty to marry his first cousin. Twelve of his inbreds died before him, the last was a sickly tyrant. The stoic life contained him. The prison of peace.

    Such are the familiar, recycled.

The muslim infant with a toy gun shouting they will kill all Jews, the momma-fixated imprinted like the homing salmon, the cross-dressing child just to please and not be rejected… all belonging to the female who never grew up.

A father never says “be like me,” but “be yourself.” Because they know, and protect this fact, that every child an Individual. Not a belief system.

The emerging mind has an innocent wonder of the world.

“Why?” is the most beautiful question of all.

    • PC, I include the link below not because I believe it to be true, but simply because it refutes your left brain/right brain theme and I welcome your input.

As an aside, how does one help an Aspergers develop their fantastic affinities to a given field? The deficiencies, I think, are relatively clear (but not necessarily easy) in how to deal with by urging the subject to socialize.

The physical attributes of this two-person model:

The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World Paperback – 15 Jun 2012 by Iain Mcgilchrist (Author)
“Iain McGilchrist draws on a vast body of recent brain research, illustrated with case histories, to reveal that the difference is profound – not just this or that function, but two whole, coherent, but incompatible ways of experiencing the world. The left hemisphere is detail-oriented, prefers mechanisms to living things, and is inclined to self-interest, where the right hemisphere has greater breadth, flexibility and generosity. This division helps explain the origins of music and language, and casts new light on the history of philosophy, as well as on some mental illnesses.”

      Self-Consciousness and ‘Split’ Brains: The Mind’s I Hardcover – August 1, 2018
      by Elizabeth Schechter (Author)
“Elizabeth Schechter argues that there are in fact two minds, subjects of experience, and intentional agents inside each split-brain human being: right and left. On the other hand, each split-brain subject is nonetheless one of us. The key to reconciling these two claims is to understand the ways in which each of us is transformed by self-consciousness.”

Video: Jill Bolt explained her right-brain euphoria in her Ted Talk.

I have simply argued that the submission of self (left brain), via an emotional terror-block means that the child’s reception is only to love or hate via the ‘binds-that-join-us’ (right brain).

      Totalitarian right-brained Cults:
Islam: Males femaled before Allah. (Where real females are mutilated, hidden and silenced). This is exactly why Muhammad could control these sons-of-bitches.

Socialism: Female dominant. (Where males are made ‘mansplainers,’ ADHD, and “boys will be boys” hate criminals). Females now can mount females.

Sex-you-ality: Identity from the world’s imprint. Reality gone. Emotional triggers. Pedophiles and pederasts have a Rainbow field-day.

No healthy man-woman relations in this mirror of the balanced mind. muslims compete, Feminists can only briefly mate with hyena males, Sexperts fixate on gonads. Not a man among them. Fatherless and miserable. Unmerited guardians making children submit.

Socrates said, ‘I know nothing, therefore I am the wisest’. More deeply: I believe nothing. No attachment. No submission.

But everyone I have personally shared this with, is too afraid to use it. The right brain world is afraid. Because they never transferred to the left brain. (Speak to your grand parents who did. It’s like another language). Compulsory late schooling in all societies, madrassa to mosque, and child to stage, meant they never left the mother-imprint.

      • “…how does one help an Aspergers..”

“Early and regular treatment can help your child cope with the symptoms related to Asperger’s syndrome. It can prepare him or her for adult life. Treatment usually includes a mix of speech, physical, occupational, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).”
        https://familydoctor.org/condition/aspergers-syndrome/

Like the aniti left-brain, (which I had, due to a violent bully of a father and so I could not inherit this as my own voice), there may be those anti right-brain (with the passive-aggressive mother rejected, to silence that voice in themselves). The rejection of inner thoughts.

Bulimia nervosa can come from fear of the father lusting after the daughter’s maturing body, or from rejecting maturing because they will turn into the mother. Fear.

And one ever believes the tranwoman is a woman, no matter how surgically enhanced just as soon as he opens his mouth. Aping that is distracted by gaping.

So of course there are genetic and physical brain impairment conditions too. Especially with the offsping of first cousins. But the conditions of stunted grown and poor cognitive ability in distressed children are common too.

Islam, Socialism and Sexsquirrelity have had a disturbing effect on all children. Child abuse of the enquiring mind.

They make Brothers, Comrades and Sister. Outraged, intolerant and antisocial. Very demanding. And you will be forced to pay for it.

        • Very good. Thank you. So the article I’ve cited is the manifestation of political correctness in pyschology. No stone left unturned by the fatherless bastards of the right-brained Left.

          • The mind is our echo chamber. If there are painful unforgotten memories, all that is left are the emotions of dislike.

Trump is hate by muslims, feminists and LGBTQ+.
Obama is loved by this unholy trinity.

Heminisity. Trump thinks like a man.

Now, with these three, if you go in like a Stockholm-Swede rescue them, then you, your family, community and nation will perish. For they despise you for keeping them prisoners, knowing their Welfare stops when they are normal and well.

For those who can see they are sick, then your borders will protect you, and you will become a santuary for those who suffered enough in their utopias to seek refuge. But they do not ever bring their shit with them. An ex-muslim is an ex-muslim, not a dhimmi who was the runt of the littler being bullied, and now wants to big it up among the kufar.

We will just see if Trump can make America great again. The world depends on it.

Yesterday, Monday afternoon, in Mühlhausen, there was a skirmish in which a man was slightly injured. A 31-year-old man was walking along Waid street from Thomas-Müntzer-Street at about 1:10 p.m. when he spat at a 20-year-old woman who was running towards him. When her father tried to confront the 31-year-old, he reacted aggressively and attacked the 55-year-old. In the course of the dispute, the 31-year-old pulled a knife and slightly injured the 20-year-old’s father’s hand. 6. UK Cannot Use Strait of Hormuz If Iran Has No Access to Gibraltar – President Rouhani (sputniknews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201908061076480418-uk-cannot-use-strait-of-hormuz-if-iran-has-no-access-to-gibraltar–rouhani/

“The United Kingdom cannot use the Strait of Hormuz as long as Iran cannot pass through the Strait of Gibraltar, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday.

“Security for security, peace for peace, strait for strait. The Strait of Hormuz cannot be opened for you [the United Kingdom] while Gibraltar is closed to us,” Rouhani said during a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Rouhani remarked that “British tankers in the past didn’t take into account our warnings considering the movement in the Persian Gulf, but now the situation is completely different.”

UK-Iran tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for up to one-third of the world’s daily sea-bound supplies from oil-rich nations of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran, peaked this month after an incident on the other side of the continent, off the coast of Gibraltar.

On 4 July, Royal Marine commandos boarded and seized the Grace 1, a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker loaded with Iranian oil. London alleged that the ship was headed for an oil processing terminal in Syria, in violation of European Union sanctions against the war-torn country, while Iran has denied the claims.

In turn, Iran detained the UK-flagged tanker Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz last month for an alleged violation of shipping laws.

Following the incidents, the UK announced plans to put together a European-led coalition separate from a similar US initiative to patrol the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in a bid to “protect” commercial vessels. Germany, France, Denmark, and Italy have reportedly backed London’s idea.”

  7. Iranian President Warns: A War With Tehran Would be the ‘Mother of All Wars’ (sputniknews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201908061076478163-iran-rouhani-war-negotiations/

“The statement comes amid increasing tensions between Washington and Iran, as US President Donald Trump authorised sanctions in June on officials associated with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. The decision was followed by the US slapping sanctions on Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that a possible war against Iran would be the “mother of all wars”, while peace with Tehran is “the mother of all peace”.

In a speech broadcast live on state-run TV on Tuesday, Rouhani also reiterated Tehran’s readiness to sit down with Washington if it scraps all the sanctions against Iran.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran favours talks and negotiations and, if the US really wants to talk, before anything else it should lift all sanctions,” he underscored.

Separately, Rouhani commented on the situation around Iran detaining the British tanker Stena Impero near the Strait of Hormuz on 19 July over alleged maritime violations, a few weeks after Royal Marines seized the Iranian oil tanker Grace 1 near the Strait of Gibraltar after the vessels allegedly violated EU sanctions.

“A strait for a strait. It can’t be that the Strait of Hormuz is free for you and the Strait of Gibraltar is not free for us,” Rouhani underscored.

The statement comes a few weeks after Rouhani signalled Iran’s willingness to hold negotiations with the US.

“We are always ready for negotiation. I tell you this hour and this moment to abandon bullying and lift the sanctions and return to logic and wisdom. We are ready,” Rouhani pointed out

He added that Iran had shifted its approach from “strategic patience” to “reciprocal action” and would respond in kind to any of Washington’s steps related to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Deteriorating Relations Between Tehran and Washington

Tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating since 8 May 2018, when President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from the JCPOA and imposed several rounds of economic sanctions on Iran.

Exactly a year later, Tehran announced its own decision to partially suspend some obligations under the deal and gave the other signatories – France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and the EU – 60 days to save the accord by facilitating oil exports and trade with Iran.

The US, in turn, sent an aircraft carrier strike group and additional troops to the Persian Gulf in May in a “direct message” to Iran, in a move that was followed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) downing a US spy drone in June. The IRGC insisted that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was downed in Iranian airspace, while the US Central Command claimed that the UAV was destroyed in international waters.

This prompted the Trump administration to briefly consider military strikes against Iran, which Trump later cancelled as “not proportionate”.

The Treasury Department, meanwhile, sanctioned Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on 31 July, prompting Zarif to thank Washington “for considering [him] such a huge threat to [the US] agenda”.”

  8. ‘Americans Have Always Been the Ultimate Losers in Encounters With IRGC Navy’ – Iranian Admiral (sputniknews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201908061076481076-americans-have-always-been-the-ultimate-losers-in-encounters-with-iranian-navy–navy-deputy-chief/

“On Monday, London announced that it would be joining the US-led maritime mission in the Persian Gulf, in spite of the UK’s earlier promises to forge ahead with a ‘European-led’ security coalition instead.

The US has lost every confrontation it has had with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ naval forces in the past four decades, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the IRGC, has boasted.

“Americans have always been the ultimate and full-scale losers in all their encounters with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Navy, and the most notable cases of their defeats were on April 14, 1988, and January 12, 2016, before their drone was shot down on June 20” of this year, Fadavi said, his comments quoted by Fars.

The other two dates, April 14, 1988 and January 12, 2016, were apparent references to ‘Operation Praying Mantis’, a US Navy mission targeting oil platforms in Iranian territorial waters, which saw a US frigate damaged by an Iranian mine and sparked one of the largest US naval skirmishes since WWII, and a 2016 naval encounter which led to the capture ten US sailors by Iran after their vessel ‘accidentally strayed’ into Iranian waters.

On June 20, 2019, a $220 million US spy drone was shot down by the IRGC’s air defence troops after flying into Iranian airspace, with the incident bringing the two countries to the brink of war.

US, UK Have No Business in the Gulf – Iran Navy Chief
Separately, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi slammed US and UK-led efforts to establish a ‘maritime coalition’ in the Persian Gulf, calling the countries’ actions a “show staged by imperialist countries, headed by the US and the UK.” According to Khanzadi, their efforts were “a big lie and a deceitful trick to project the Persian Gulf region as insecure.”

“This is while the region is totally safe and secure and their efforts to frame the region as insecure [are] useless,” Khanzadi stressed.

On Monday, UK Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace announced that London would be joining the US-led maritime mission in the Persian Gulf, despite London’s commitments under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal not to join the US in its “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran.

Reacting to Wallace’s announcement, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas reiterated Berlin’s preference for a European coalition, and stressed that Germany would not be joining a US-led mission in the Strait of Hormuz anytime soon. “Today, the United States is alone in the world and cannot create a coalition…Countries that are its friends are too ashamed of being in a coalition with them,” Maas said.

Previously, the US and the UK had proposed separate coalitions in a bid to ‘ensure the freedom of navigation’ in the Gulf, with Washington expressing frustration with its European allies over their lack of support for the US-led scheme. Instead, the UK had planned its own European-led effort, which Germany and France expressed an interest in. Iran, meanwhile, urged all foreign powers to give up on their Gulf ‘maritime security’ efforts, saying the waters were secure, and vowing to “protect” its “1,500 miles of Persian Gulf coastline” and the surrounding waters. Last week, US Vice Admiral Michael Gilday indicated that the US would prefer to see US allies do “80 or 90 percent” of the work in the Gulf, and “a much smaller US effort.”

An estimated one third of all sea-bound oil supplies flow through the Strait of Hormuz daily, with the strategic sea passage sandwiched between Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Musandam, an exclave of Oman. In mid-May and mid-June, several tankers in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman were sabotaged, with the US immediately blaming Iran, and Tehran denying the claims and accusing the US and its regional allies of exacerbating tensions. Last month, Iran seized a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz over its alleged unsafe behaviour. That incident prompted the UK to propose its maritime mission.”

  9. Pakistan Should be Ready for War as India ‘Tries to Turn Kashmir Into Another Palestine’ – Minister (sputniknews, Aug 6, 2019)

“Tensions between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir have risen sharply after New Delhi decided to revoke the territory’s special status and split the state into two administrative units on Monday, 5 August.

In a provocative social media post, Pakistan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Chaudhary Fawad Hussain has said, India is trying to convert Kashmir into another Palestine, and the people of his country should be ready to fight, “if war is imposed.”

Hussain’s statement comes in the wake of India revoking a provision in its Constitution which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, in a decree on 5 August repealed Article 370, thus ending the special status of the state…”

  11. Erdogan shock: Saudi Arabia ‘planning to oust Turkish leader over Khashoggi killing’ (express, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1162337/saudi-arabia-news-turkey-erdogan-jamal-khashoggi-donald-trump-cia-spt

“SAUDI ARABIA is planning to uproot Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan following his pressure on the Kingdom after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, according to a new report.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey took a turn for the worse following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last year. Tensions initially grew when Ankara backed Qatar during the 2017 diplomatic crisis and strained further amid Turkey’s diplomatic angling towards Iran. The explosive new report reveals that Saudi Arabian officials are now plotting to confront the Turkish government in a bid to get rid of Erdogan.

It was written by the Emirates Policy Centre, a think tank with close links to the government.

A copy obtained by the Middle East Eye reveals an order given in May to implement a plan to weaken the Turkish government.

It suggested using “all possible tools to pressure Erdogan’s government, weaken him, and keep him busy with domestic issues in the hope that he will be brought down by the opposition, or occupy him with confronting crisis after crisis, and push him to slip up and make mistakes which the media would surely pick up on.”

This is believed to be because of the Turkish leader’s response to Mr Khashoggi’s killing.

Erdogan was furious that the attack took place on home soil and demanded an international inquiry into the incident.

He was also frustrated at the lack of cooperation on Saudi Arabia’s part and accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of ordering the murder.

The report states: “President Erdogan went too far in his campaign smearing the kingdom, especially the person of the Crown Prince, using in the most reprehensible manner the case of Khashoggi.”

It also said that Erodgan leaked “disinformation” aimed at “distorting the image of the kingdom and attempting to destroy the reputation of the Crown Prince”.

Mr Khashoggi, a known critic of the Saudi regime, was killed in the Saudi consulate while trying to obtain marriage papers.

Both the CIA and the United Nations have concluded that the Crown Prince either ordered the murder or was aware of it before it took place.

The leaked paper comes after a new book revealed that Saudi Arabia tried to have Mr Khashoggi killed on British soil before he died in Turkey.

In ‘Murder in Istanbul: Jamal Khashoggi And The Crown Prince’, journalist Owen Wilson claimed a British intelligence source was aware of a plan to kill him in September – a month before his actual death.”

  12. Asylum seeker, 30, with 18 convictions and a history of violent crime is fighting to stay in the UK after claiming his human rights would be breached if he’s sent back to Somalia (dailymail, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7325953/Asylum-seeker-30-18-convictions-gets-chance-stay-UK.html

“A 30-year-old Somali refugee who has racked up 18 convictions including drugs, firearms and theft offences could face deportation – but lawyers argue this is against his human rights.

The refugee, identified only as MS, faces the threat of deportation after two previous judgements allowing him to stay in Britain were overturned by the Court of Appeal.

But his lawyers say he cannot be sent back to Mogadishu, Somalia, because as a member of the minority Ashraf clan he faces the threat of violence there, The Times reported.

Deporting him would be against Article 3 of the Human Rights Act, which says ‘no one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,’ his lawyers claim.

Despite MS presenting a serious threat to public safety he could still be allowed to remain in the UK, according to officials.

His case will now be returned to the immigration tribunal in the latest instalment of a five-year legal battle.

MS has been convicted 18 times for 25 offences committed between January 2006 and September 2015.

These crime include three offences against the person, two against property, one fraud, five thefts, three relating to public order, three offences relating to police, courts and prisons, one drugs and one firearms offence.

There were also another seven miscellaneous offences.

If deported to Somalia he could be the target of attacks which means UK courts have to consider whether his deportation would be in breach of his human right not to be ‘subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment’.

He arrived in Britain with his mother and six siblings in 2002 aged just 13.

His mother applied for his asylum as her dependent but this was refused.

The family had travelled to the UK to escape the ongoing civil war in Somalia.

The conflict began in 1991 after the military regime of President President Siad Barre was overthrown.

In 2011 the family, except MS who had a criminal record by this time, were granted exceptional asylum. In 2012 he was also granted asylum.

The Home Office then took back this refugee status three years later.

MS has been tagged, ordered to pay a victim surcharge and had his driving licence endorsed by the courts.”

  13. Italy to fine migrant rescue boats up to €1 million as tough Salvini law passes (telegraph, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/08/06/italy-fine-migrant-rescue-boats-1-million-tough-salvini-law/

“Matteo Salvini has scored another victory after parliament passed a security bill which threatens the captains of migrant rescue vessels with fines of up to €1 million if they enter Italy’s ports without permission.

The passing of the bill further bolsters the strong position of the deputy prime minister, who has made combating migration from North Africa one of his main priorities since coming to power last summer.

The security measure means that the skippers of NGO vessels who rescue asylum seekers in the Mediterranean and try to bring them to an Italian port will face fines of up to €1 million.

They will be arrested and their vessels impounded.

That is a dramatic increase on a €50,000 fine which was introduced in a previous security bill, passed in December.

The new bill, which also gives added powers to the police, won approval after passing a confidence vote in the Senate, the upper house of parliament, on Monday night.

There were 160 votes in favour, 57 against and 21 abstentions.

It had already been approved by the lower house.

A threatened rebellion by Left-leaning members of the Five Star Movement, Mr Salvini’s coalition partner, failed to materialise.

“More power to the forces of order, more border controls, more officers to arrest Mafiosi and members of the Camorra (the Naples-based mafia),” Mr Salvini, who is also interior minister and head of the hard-Right League party, wrote in a tweet.

He thanked “you, the Italians” as well as “the Blessed Virgin Mary” – the latest of several references he has made to his Catholicism.

Opponents of Mr Salvini say the new law undermines human rights and persecutes people with a legitimate right to flee violence and poverty.

The security decrees have been criticised by the Council of Europe and the UN, as well as humanitarian NGOs who deploy rescue boats to the Mediterranean to save people escaping Libya.

In Italy, the opposition Democratic Party called the new law “monstrous”, saying that it “criminalises those who save human lives at sea”.

But Mr Salvini’s uncompromising stance towards migrants and refugees has paid handsome dividends in the polls, with the latest suggesting that the League now has the approval of 38% of Italians.

That is a sharp rise from the 17% that the party won in last year’s general election.

Meanwhile, a fishing boat carrying 48 migrants managed to reach the southern Italian island of Lampedusa after setting out from the coast of Libya.

Some migrants died during the journey, including a five-month-old baby, survivors told the Italian authorities.

The survivors included 27 women, three of whom are pregnant. A Protestant Church charity working on Lampedusa said the migrants are from Mali, Tunisia and Ivory Coast.”

  14. US carrier sails into disputed waters amid new flare-ups

ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER RONALD REAGAN, South China Sea (AP) — A U.S. aircraft carrier has sailed through the disputed South China Sea in the latest show of America’s military might amid new territorial flare-ups involving China and three rival claimant states.

The U.S. Navy flew a small group of Philippine generals, officials and journalists Tuesday to the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, where fighter jets landed and took off by catapult with thunderous blasts. The nuclear-powered carrier, which was brimming with about 70 supersonic F18 jets, spy planes and helicopters, was en route to Manila.

Rear Adm. Karl Thomas says American military presence helps provide the security and stability that foster diplomatic talks. He made the comment when asked by reporters what message the warship’s presence is sending amid new tensions from renewed disputes involving China and rival claimants including Vietnam.

  16. Imran Khan predicts rise in suicide bombing in Kashmir as Pakistan’s army issues dire warning (telegraph, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/08/06/imran-khan-predicts-rise-suicide-bombing-kashmir/

“Pakistan’s military will “go to any extent” to support Kashmiris, the army chief has said, while Imran Khan predicted new suicide bombings in Indian-administered Kashmir after Delhi revoked the region’s self-rule.

Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa said the military which largely controls Pakistan’s regional security policy “stands by the Kashmiris in their just struggle to the very end”.

Residents of Indian-administered Kashmir were on Tuesday still under a security crackdown with phones and internet cut after the sudden decision to abolish political autonomy in the disputed Muslim majority territory.

As Pakistan’s parliament met to discuss the move, Mr Khan predicted there would be more terrorist attacks in Kashmir like the blast which killed 40 paramilitary police in Pulwama in February. India blamed that attack on Pakistan and the two sides came close to war.

“With an approach of this nature, incidents like Pulwama are bound to happen again. I can already predict this will happen,” Mr Khan said.

There are fears Delhi’s move to revoke article 370 of the constitution may send the region into a new spiral of violence and deepening militant violence.

“Jihad is now obligatory for Muslims in Pakistan because our Kashmiri sisters are waiting for our help,” said Maulana Abdul Aziz, former prayer leader at the notorious Red Mosque in Islamabad.

The preacher who led a 2007 Islamist uprising that was put down in a bloody siege released an audio message on Tuesday, saying if Pakistan’s government could not help people in Kashmir, then it should open the border for militants to fight.

Mullah Massod Azhar, chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant group which India blames for killing 40 paramilitary police in February and a string of other attacks, said Delhi’s decision marked a new chapter for the Kashmir conflict.

He told followers: “Now its the time that Kashmiris need to come out with unity and then the enemy will be begging for peace and negotiations.”

Pakistan’s military has for decades been accused of harbouring and supporting jihadists such as Jaish-e-Mohammad to push its agenda in Kashmir and Afghanistan.

It promised a crackdown earlier in the year, but American officials told Gen Bajwa and Imran Khan during their successful visit to Washington last month that they still wanted to see “irreversible action” against terrorist and militant groups.

The Kashmir crisis now means Pakistan’s military has to decide whether to between defying America just as relations appeared to be warming, said Farzana Shaikh, a Pakistan expert at the Chatham House think tank.

She said: “Pakistan has fine tuned the business of plausible deniability, so there is still the possibility that these groups, some of them will be unleashed. But it’s really not clear what [the army’s] going to do now given that it was until recently basking in the glow of a new era in US-Pakistan relations.””

  17. Murder, ‘gay-hunters’ strike terror in Russia’s LGBT community

Saint Petersburg (AFP) – When LGBT activist Yelena Grigoryeva found her name on a hit list of a “gay-hunting” group, she did not appear to take the threat seriously.

The group called itself “Pila”, meaning “saw”, after the series of Hollywood horror films of the same name, in which a serial killer plays games with his victims.

Pila promised “very dangerous and cruel little gifts” to a number of Russia’s gay activists.

“That’s just a threat,” Grigoryeva wrote on Facebook early last month, posting a screen grab of the group’s website on her page.

“This is not how crimes are committed.”

On July 21, her body was found in bushes close to her home in Saint Petersburg, with at least eight stab wounds to her face and back. She was 41.

The murder has horrified Russia’s LGBT community, even though there seems to be no firm evidence linking Pila directly to Grigoryeva’s fatal stabbing.

  18. The ‘party of science’ refuses to concede mass shooters are sick
By Ben Bowles August 6, 2019

On Monday, Donald Trump addressed the nation on the most recent mass shootings, which have so far claimed 32 lives. Among his comments was the observation that “mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun.” Thus began the usual tug-of-war between the Left and Right over how to reduce incidents of gun violence, with the Left arguing that the only solution is tighter gun control.

On Sunday, Rosie Phillips Davis, president of the American Psychological Association, released a statement in which she claimed that “blaming mass shootings on mental illness is unfounded and stigmatizing. Research has shown that only a very small percentage of violent acts are committed by people who are diagnosed with, or in treatment for, mental illness.” Perhaps it depends on how you define very small percentage, but according to Psychology Today, “Studies show that about 20-25% of mass shooters (defined as killing three or more in one incident) suffered from this type of mental illness,” referring to “schizophrenia, in which the person is out of touch with reality and has hallucinations and/or delusions.”

An op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, provides a more in-depth look at mass shootings and their causation. The authors, a psychologist and professor of criminal justice, write:

    • Left has again distorted or misstated facts in latest mass shootings to fit their narrative
By Howard Portnoy August 5, 2019

We’ve seen this M.O. played out repeatedly. There is a deadly shooting and almost instantaneously the Left arrives at the conclusion that the gunman must be white. Such was the case with George Zimmerman, the community watch volunteer who in 2013 shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin as the two grappled for Zimmerman’s gun. Initial reports identified Zimmerman’s race as white. When it was revealed that his mother was Peruvian with some African ancestry, the press revised his race to “white Hispanic” — a new demographic.

In reacting to the two shootings that occurred this past weekend, liberals added a new wrinkle to their M.O., pigeonholing the shooters not only as “white” but as “white nationalist.” Naturally, in an era where the president himself is written off by the Left as a white nationalist, Donald Trump’s views were also factored into the equation. Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke, who represents the Texas district encompassing El Paso, blamed Trump Sunday for the shooting and accused him of being a white supremacist. Pathological Trump hater Maxine Waters also sounded off on Sunday about gun control and Trump’s alleged role in the shootings:

  19. MEMRI – Iranian Ayatollah: For Hidden Imam to Reappear We Must Engage in “Widespread Fighting” with West

Iranian Assembly of Experts member Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri said in a July 31, 2019 interview on Ofogh TV that fighting in the cause of Allah is moral and that widespread fighting is a prerequisite for the emergence of the Hidden Imam.

He said that negotiations that aim to bring about the triumph of Islamic civilization are good, and he explained that these negotiations ultimately turn into ultimatums.
On the other hand, he said that negotiations for the purposes of cooperating with the society of the infidels are bad.

Ayatollah Mirbagheri added that the Islamic revolution must continue because the conflict with the West is not over.

He said: “We did not carry out a revolution in order to join the international community and accept liberal democracy… It has all been done in order to bring about the age of [the Hidden Imam’s] reappearance.”

  20. Swedish Islamist Involved in Brussels Terror Attack to Stand Trial (breitbart, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/06/swedish-islamist-involved-brussels-terror-attack-stand-trial/

“Swedish national Osama Krayem is set to be put on trial for his role in the 2016 Brussels terror attacks where he was captured when his suicide vest failed to detonate.

The trial for the 26-year-old is expected to begin next year in Belgium, some four years after the attack occurred with Belgian Minister of Justice Koen Geens claiming that the exact dates are set to be announced in the autumn, Expressen reports.

His family originally from Syria, Krayem grew up in the notorious “no-go area” of Rosengård in the heavily migrant-populated Swedish city of Malmö and joined Islamic State in 2014.

After being described by Expressen as “gaining a prominent role” within the terror group, Krayem returned to Europe from Syria where he became part of a French-Belgian terrorist cell that planned and carried out the Paris Bataclan massacre in 2015.

Following the Brussels attacks, which occurred at Zaventem Airport and the Maelbeek metro station and saw 35 dead including three of the attackers, Krayem was arrested after being caught on CCTV interacting with terrorist Khalid el-Bakraoui whose bomb exploded at the Maelbeek metro station…”

  21. Schoolgirls Asked to Don Islamic Headscarf For ‘Hijab Day’ in November (breitbart, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/06/non-muslim-english-girls-asked-don-islamic-hijab-day-november/

“Non-Muslim schoolgirls in Lincolnshire, England, are being asked to don the Islamic hijab headscarf for a day in November.

Ghada Mohamed of the Lincoln Muslim Sisters Forum is organising the event, which she hopes will be taken up by high schools all around the country, to increase non-Muslim girls “knowledge” of the religious garments and decrease alleged incidents of abuse against hijabi girls.

The BBC reported that one Muslim girl told them that “the hijab was part of her identity, but wearing it sometimes made her feel like she was not part of the community”, and that she supported Mrs Mohamamed’s initiative.

The idea that Muslim girls might try not wearing the hijab to feel more like “part of the community” was not raised in the BBC report, although it was broached on social media by talkRadio host Julia Hartley-Brewer.

“‘Lincolnshire non-Muslim girls asked to wear hijab for a day’ — or how about the Muslim girls try NOT wearing a hijab for a day and see how nice life is in a free society where women are equal with men and don’t need to cover themselves to get respect?” she tweeted.

Islamic headscarves have previously been promoted by the British government itself, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office organising a walk-in event for World Hijab Day — which already exists, separately from Mrs Mohamed’s planned day — for staff in 2018, providing them with free headscarves and inviting them to wear them.

“Would you like to try on a Hijab or learn why Muslim women wear the headscarf? Come along to our walk-in event. Free scarfs [sic] for all those that choose to wear it for the day or part of the day,” read an internal email promoting the event.

“Muslim women, along with followers of many other religions, choose to wear the Hijab. Many find liberation, respect and security through wearing it. #StrongInHijab”

Women have less choice in the matter in many Muslim-majority countries, such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, where three women were recently sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment each by the Islamic Revolutionary Court for “disrespecting compulsory hijab”.”

    • Maybe they would like to try a bit of fgm as well,or have their beaver sown up so that there is only a hole small enough for a muslim penis to enter, how about acid in the face,or stoning to death just for a change ,all of this is readily available once you don the hijab.

  22. Sweden Launches Project to Study Influence of Radical Islamic Salafism (breitbart, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/08/06/sweden-launches-project-study-influence-radical-islamic-salafism/

“The Swedish National Defence College has announced a new study that will examine the effects of the radical Islamic ideology Salafism in various cities across the country.

The new project, which is set to last until 2021, was described by Filip Ahlin, an analyst at the Swedish National Defence College, as a way to “describe the problem and develop knowledge that can lay the foundation for action”, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

Salafism, an extremist hard-line interpretation of Islam, is often linked to terrorism and to groups like the Islamic State and other terror organisations.

One of the areas selected for the study is the Norrby area in the city of Borås. “Norrby is an area that has had some of the biggest problems. We will take it from there. Then, we have not decided entirely on what other areas we will look at,” Ahlin said.

The researchers say they will also look at other areas labelled by the police as “vulnerable” or “particularly vulnerable”, areas that are commonly referred to as no-go zones where unemployment and crime are much higher than the national average.

In the notorious no-go area of Rosengård in Malmö, it was alleged earlier this year that Islamic State members who had returned to Sweden from the Middle East were attempting to recruit youth in the area in underground mosques.

“The situation here in Rosengård is really bad,” a local mother who works against the influence of jihadists in the area said. A total of 20 Islamic State members allegedly live in the city, according to the National Defence College.

Sweden’s National CentrE for Terror Threat Assessment (NCT) warned earlier this year that radical Islamic terrorism remained the number one security threat in the country.

Head of NCT Linda Thörnell named Islamic State, also known as Daesh, as being the chief inspiration for jihadists, saying: “The inspiration has partly gone down, the enthusiasm for Daesh has diminished, but Daesh continues to inspire attacks and it still happens.””

“A Pakistani police official says a bomb has exploded in a market in the southwestern city of Quetta, killing a minority Shiite Muslim and wounding 13 others.

Police chief Abdur Razzaq Cheema says Tuesday’s bombing took place in a neighborhood comprised mainly of ethnic Hazara residents.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but Sunni militant groups have claimed similar bombings in the past against Shiites, whom they view as apostates deserving of death.

Quetta is the capital of Baluchistan province, which is also the scene of a low-level insurgency by separatists demanding more autonomy and a greater share in the region’s natural resources such as gas and oil.”

  24. Taliban say differences resolved on US troop withdrawal (abcnews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/taliban-differences-resolved-us-troop-withdrawal-64796969

“The United States and the Taliban have resolved differences in peace talks over the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and guarantees from the insurgents that they will cut ties with other extremist groups, a Taliban official said Tuesday.

The U.S. side did not immediately provide details about the latest round of talks held in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political office. But Zalmay Khalilzad, the American envoy who has been leading the talks since they began late last year, tweeted that they had made “excellent progress.”

The two sides have been meeting for the last two days, and technical teams were continuing discussions on Tuesday in Doha. The Taliban official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the negotiations.

Khalilzad, who has been tasked with finding a peaceful resolution to the nearly 18-year war — America’s longest conflict — has made intra-Afghan talks and a permanent cease-fire priorities in the negotiations. But the Taliban have continued to sideline the Kabul government, dismissing it as a U.S. puppet and refusing to recognize it.

The Taliban have kept up a near-daily rate of deadly attacks, despite holding several rounds of peace talks with Khalilzad since his appointment almost a year ago. The Taliban now control roughly half of Afghanistan and are at their strongest since 2001, when the U.S.-led invasion toppled their government after it harbored al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

The U.S. and the Taliban now appear to be closing in on an agreement under which U.S. forces would withdraw in exchange for guarantees that Afghanistan would not become a haven for other terrorist groups.

Khalilzad has said he is hoping for a final agreement by Sept. 1 that would allow the roughly 20,000 U.S. and NATO forces to leave.

The U.S. and NATO formally concluded their combat mission in 2014, but the American and allied troops continue to train and build the Afghan military. Separately, U.S. forces also assist Afghan troops in airstrikes and raids on the Taliban and against the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump has often expressed his exasperation with America’s continued involvement in Afghanistan and his desire to bring troops home.

Also on Tuesday, the Taliban called on fellow Afghans to boycott next month’s presidential election and warned them to stay away from rallies “that could become potential targets.”

The Taliban dismissed the Sept. 28 election, which has been delayed this year over security and organizational concerns, calling it a “sham.” President Ashraf Ghani, who is seeking a second term in office, is among more than a dozen candidates.

The president’s office issued a statement calling on the Taliban to prove they are serious about peace and “stop intimidating the public.”

In Kabul on Tuesday, a bomb targeted a van carrying employees of the Interior Ministry’s counter-narcotics division. The blast killed five people and wounded another seven, Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.”

  25. UN refugee agency says new Italian law could endanger lives (abcnews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/refugee-agency-italian-law-endanger-lives-64803275

“The United Nations refugee agency expressed concern Tuesday that a new Italian law authorizing massive fines against the owners of private rescue ships could endanger the lives of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

A so-called “security decree” drafted by Italy’s right-wing interior minister and approved by lawmakers raised the maximum fine for entering Italian waters without permission to 1 million euros ($1.1 million) from a previous 50,000 euros ($56,000).

The law also allows for the arrest of captains who ignore orders to stay out of Italian ports and the immediate seizure of their boats by Italian naval authorities.

The U.N. agency said non-governmental organizations operating rescue ships play “an invaluable role” in saving lives and “the commitment and humanity that motivates their activities should not be criminalized or stigmatized.”

Italy’s law “could deter or impede sea rescue activities by private vessels at a time when European states have largely withdrawn from rescue efforts” in the Mediterranean, UNHCR said.

The European Union’s executive commission said it was analyzing the legislation to see if it is compatible with EU laws.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has refused to allow ships on humanitarian rescue missions to bring migrants into the country’s ports. The captain of a German aid group’s rescue ship defied the order, while smuggler’s boats continue to arrive at Italy’s southernmost Lampedusa island on their own.”

    • It could save many Italian lives, prevent many rapes, and crime in general, but parasites lives seem to be more important that those of the indigenous Italian people.

  26. Libya intercepts 3 boats carrying 122 Europe-bound migrants (abcnews, Aug 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/libya-intercepts-boats-carrying-122-europe-bound-migrants-64803040

“Libya’s coast guard says it has intercepted 122 Europe-bound migrants off the country’s Mediterranean coast in recent days.

Spokesman Ayoub Gassim says Tuesday the migrants, including two women and a child, were on three boats and were intercepted in three different operations on Saturday, Sunday and Monday off the coast of the capital, Tripoli.

He says the migrants were given humanitarian and medical aid before being taken to detention centers in Tripoli.

Libya slid into chaos after the 2011 uprising that toppled and later killed long-ruling dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Armed groups have proliferated, and the country has emerged as a major transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East for a better life in Europe.”

  27. Obama rears up to blame ‘racist ideologies’, ‘white nationalist criminals’ and some ‘leaders’ for shootings

Former President Barack Obama said Monday that “racist sentiments” coming from some U.S. leaders have fueled the climate that led to this weekend’s shooting rampages, and said the country must take steps to rein in “white nationalist websites that proliferate on the internet.”

Mr. Obama, in a statement, said America’s level of gun violence was far out of proportion to other developed countries and that excuses about the difficulty of stopping the crimes will no longer cut it.

“Every time this happens, we’re told that tougher gun laws won’t stop all murders; that they won’t stop every deranged individual from getting a weapon and shooting innocent people in public places. But the evidence shows that they can stop some killings,” he said.

He said it will take public pressure on legislators to change things on that front.

But he also called for steps to combat “troubled individuals who embrace racist ideologies.”

He compared white nationalist criminals to followers of the Islamic State, saying the internet is radicalizing people and spurring them to violent outbursts.

“All of us have to send a clarion call and behave with the values of tolerance and diversity that should be the hallmark of our democracy,” he wrote, specifically criticizing “leaders who demonize those who don’t look like us, or suggest that other people, including immigrants, threaten our way of life.”

  28. WALSH: It’s Not Guns Or Mental Illness. The Problem Is Deeper Than That.

In reaction to the horrific mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, this weekend, many people on both sides have been engaged in the same game of slogan-shouting and cliche-spewing that always follows these kinds of things. One side says guns are the problem. The other retorts that mental illness is the real culprit. Both agree that extremist ideologies are partially to blame, but they disagree on which extremist ideology is most to blame. Round and round we go. Nothing is accomplished. Nothing changes. And lost in the fog of talking points is the hard reality of these tragedies — the fact that actual, real people are dying.

  29. BBC apologises for describing common Islamic gesture as an ‘ISIS salute’

British broadcaster retracts footage from documentary equating ‘tawheed’ sign to an extremist gesture

The BBC has apologised for wrongly describing a raised finger gesture common in Islam as an “ISIS salute”.

Journalist and documentary maker Stacey Dooley said a group of women making the gesture at a camp in Syria that housed ISIS followers and others from areas liberated from the group was an indication of radicalisation.

The raising of the finger is commonly seen in celebrations by Muslim footballers such as Mohamed Salah, pilgrims on the Hajj and part of Islamic daily prayer symbolising tawheed (Islamic monotheism).

The broadcaster said that the description had been removed from the BBC News at 10 footage available on its online iPlayer service and removed from Monday’s documentary by Ms Dooley on women who were living under ISIS in northern Syria.

“We apologise for this error,” the BBC said in a statement.

“What happened here is insulting and offensive to Muslims and journalists,” BBC journalist Anisa Subedar said.

Tell Mama, an organisation recording anti-Muslim hatred in Britain, said reducing a fundamental religious concept to an ISIS salute was “grossly wrong, ignorant and damaging”.

In response to Tell Mama’s statement, one writer, Oz Katerji, said the issue could be fixed in the public mind.

“A mistake like this spreads across mainstream media and becomes accepted as the normal interpretation of this gesture very quickly,” Mr Katerji said.

“That’s why it’s important to speak out and correct these problems when they occur.”

Ms Dooley has yet to issue a statement over the controversy.

  30. 51% of Mass Shooters in 2019 Were Black: Only 29% Were White
No, mass shootings are not a “white man’s” problem.
    August 6, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

Around the same time that the media was focused on the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, 60 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend. 24 of those people were shot in four hours.

Baltimore reached its 200th murder victim of the year during its “Ceasefire Weekend”.

4 people were killed in 4 days in Kansas City. 6 men were shot in Philly during the filming of a rap video.

Even in Toronto, 15 people were wounded in shootings over the weekend. Over 350 people have been shot this year in the Canadian city which has gun control, no NRA, and none of the usual excuses.

This tide of violence has received less media coverage because it challenges the false claim that, as a CNN op-ed once put it, mass shootings are a “white man’s problem.”

“I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country,” Rep. Ilhan Omar claimed on Al Jazeera.

  31. EGYPT – Cairo car bomb kills at least 20 outside hospital

Interior ministry blames Hasm group for blast that injured dozens near cancer institute

Twenty people have been killed and 47 injured after a car bomb collided with other vehicles, triggering an explosion outside a cancer hospital in central Cairo.

The blast occurred around midnight local time on a road running alongside the Nile River in an area outside Egypt’s National Cancer Institute. Pictures taken just after the incident and published by Egypt’s largest newspaper, Al-Ahram, showed two burnt-out cars, with at least one completely blackened and dented from the force of the explosion.

Egypt’s interior ministry said a car carrying explosives drove into oncoming traffic and collided with three others, detonating its charge. It named Hasm, a violent offshoot of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group, as the organisation responsible for the attack, and said a member of the group had been arrested in connection with the blast.

“I was waiting to use a bathroom inside the hospital around 12.30am when I heard a big explosion,” said Nermat al-Awady, who had travelled to the cancer centre from Minya so her child could receive treatment. Awady had intended to sleep outside the hospital with her child before queuing for treatment the following morning. “We ran to the main entrance of the hospital but it was on fire, so we left through another side door,” she said.

“I saw body parts and lots of blood,” she said, adding that she believed the fire had burned for an hour. “Inside the hospital, there was panic. Women and children were screaming and running. The hospital stairs are normally crammed with people, so it was hard to escape.”

Egypt’s ministry of health said it dispatched 42 ambulances to the site to attend to the wounded, who had sustained burns and cuts. Four remain in intensive care. About 45 patients were evacuated to other hospitals.

A ministry spokesman initially said it had recorded 19 deaths as well as “a bag of body parts”. Cairo police said they were searching the Nile for additional victims who may have fallen in during the attack.

In the morning, police and security officials watched over patients accessing the institute, where twisted metal, possibly from the bumper of a car, hung from the damaged facadeand broken glass and tiles covered the surrounding pavement. The explosion tore letters from the institute’s sign, and warped a metal frame outside.

The Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, issued a statement offering condolences to the victims, and condemning the attack. “The Egyptian state is determined to confront acts of terrorism and uproot them, with all its institutions,” he wrote.

A parked car exploded in the central Dokki neighbourhood of Cairo last August, injuring at least three people. Egyptian officials speculated that a faulty car battery sparked the explosion, causing a fire that damaged a nearby minibus.

A series of violent explosions shook the Egyptian capital in 2015, including a car bomb that destroyed part of the Italian consulate adjoining Cairo’s Tahrir Square and a blast targeting a security building in the northern Shubra al-Khaima neighbourhood. In 2014, four blasts in one evening killed six people and injured 80 in downtown Cairo in a string of attacks targeting police.

Islamist militants have systematically targeted police and security institutions since the violent overthrow of the former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, including a car bomb that fatally struck the motorcade of the top prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, in one of the highest-profile assassinations in the country’s history.

In February 2018, Sisi launched what he promised would be a comprehensive operation to “clear Egypt’s territory of terrorist elements”, focused on the restive northern Sinai peninsula, Egypt’s western desert and Nile Delta. The operation began two months after gunmen and explosions targeted a mosque in northern Sinai, killing 305 people.

India surprises own people by revoking autonomy in restive Kashmir
    BBC

[Ed. – When India started the build-up a few days ago, it looked initially like this would just be another build-up, uneasy return to stability, and stand-down. But not this time. Not clear where this will go, but it’s another move, away from the long-time status quo, that generates a sense of the world heading into something big. Pakistan won’t like it, but it’s probably not their number one worry right now. Strange times.]

Article 370: What happened with Kashmir and why it matters

India’s BJP-led government is hailing its decision to strip the state of Jammu and Kashmir of autonomy after seven decades, characterising it as the correction of a “historical blunder”. The BBC’s Geeta Pandey in Delhi explains why this has happened and why it’s important.
    Why is Kashmir controversial?

Kashmir is a Himalayan region that both India and Pakistan say is fully theirs.

The area was once a princely state called Jammu and Kashmir, but it joined India in 1947 when the sub-continent was divided up at the end of British rule.

India and Pakistan subsequently went to war over it and each came to control different parts of the territory with a ceasefire line agreed.

There has been violence in the Indian-administered side – the state of Jammu and Kashmir – for 30 years due to a separatist insurgency against Indian rule.
    What’s happened now?

In the first few days of August, there were signs of something afoot in Kashmir.

Tens of thousands of additional Indian troops were deployed, a major Hindu pilgrimage was cancelled, schools and colleges were shut, tourists were ordered to leave, telephone and internet services were suspended and regional political leaders were placed under house arrest.
