Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. ‘A First’: Danish Police Pulls Gun on Immigrants Attacking Nationalist Party Leader (Video) (sputnniknews, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201907191076292471-a-first-danish-police-pulls-gun-on-immigrants-attacking-nationalist-party-leader-video/

“According to Rasmus Paludan, who heads Denmark’s “most anti-immigrant party”, this is the first time in the nation’s history the police have been forced to draw a firearm to protect a politician.

Pistols were unholstered as the Danish police had to protect the security of Rasmus Paludan, leader of the immigration-critical party Stram Kurs (“Hard Line”).

Paludan’s visit to the immigrant-heavy area of Tingbjerg in Greater Copenhagen (officially designated as a “ghetto”) sparked strong reactions, and the police had to step in and protect the nationalist leader from aggressive locals.

Stram Kurs’s public meeting was first disturbed by immigrants who played oriental music at high volume, seemingly to disturb Paludan from speaking. By his own admission, Paludan had to “step about 10 metres to the side” for the sake of his livestream.

Then, three masked people dashed at the party leader, whereupon the police officers had to step in and draw their weapons.

“Stop, stop, get away”, the police are heard shouting in a video posted by Stram Kurs.

In another clip, Paludan explained that the police were forced to evacuate him immediately.

“This is the first time in Danish history that the police are forced to pull firearms to protect a politician”, Paludan declared.

Stram Kurs was founded in 2017 and identifies as “ethno-nationalist” and by its own admission campaigns to reach “a Denmark for Danes”. This year, it skyrocketed from a fringe party to national prominence through its “free speech” demonstrations in troubled migrant areas. As the party has made a habit of burning the Quran during its public meetings, their demonstrations have often sparked riots despite police surveillance.

Rasmus Paludan is seen as a highly controversial figure by the Danish establishment, even by fellow right-wingers. Stram Kurs advocates banning Islam in Denmark, expelling refugees and cancelling Danish citizenship for non-European immigrants. Paludan himself has repeatedly warned against Danes becoming a minority in their own country.

In the 2019 general election, Stram Kurs barely missed the parliamentary threshold of 2 percent.”

The attorney-general claims that the Syrian, who is a recognised refugee in Germany, was particularly active in recruiting for the radical Islamic terror group over the summer of 2016 and the summer of the following year.

  5. Prominent Saudi opposition figure says a revolt is waiting to happen (memo, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20190719-prominent-saudi-opposition-figure-says-a-revolt-is-waiting-to-happen/

“A prominent opposition figure in Saudi Arabia has said that citizens across society in the Kingdom have been angry ever since Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman became the de facto ruler, Al-Khaleej Online has reported.

“There is no segment in Saudi society today which is not angry because of Bin Salman’s policies,” explained the head of the Movement for Islamic Reform, [. “He no longer respects any Sheikh, tribal leader, intellectual or academic.”

In an exclusive interview with the news site, Al-Faqih claimed that the Crown Prince is “thirsty for power” and “would do anything and crush anyone” who stands in his way. “The situation in Saudi Arabia could explode at any moment,” he added.

The opposition leader painted two scenarios which could result in a revolt against the ruling family. “The first would be that regional events escalate, leading to a war with Iran, while losses increase in the war in Yemen leading to the collapse of power and giving people the cover to start a revolution.”

According to the London-based Saudi dissident, the second scenario would see domestic anger and tension turn into a revolution which would not be peaceful like the Arab Spring revolutions. “Everyone who believes in peaceful action has been suppressed, imprisoned or displaced,” he pointed out. “Our people are armed and believe they can extract their rights from those who wrong them by force.””

  6. Turkish jets bomb Iraqi Kurdistan after diplomat killing (DW, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://www.dw.com/en/turkish-jets-bomb-iraqi-kurdistan-after-diplomat-killing/a-49644409

“Turkish warplanes have struck a mountainous region near the Iraq-Iran border, where a Kurdish separatist group is known to operate. Ankara blames them for Wednesday’s killing of a Turkish diplomat in Erbil.

Turkey carried out an airstrike on Iraqi Kurdistan on Thursday in retaliation for the killing of a Turkish diplomat in the region, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the airforce had “launched the most comprehensive air operation on Qandil,” a difficult-to-reach area of Northern Iraq where the Turkish separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has its headquarters, according to the AFP news agency.

The ministry tweeted that six “terrorists were neutralized” in the aerial bombardment.

Akar said the bombing had “dealt a heavy blow” to the PKK, which Ankara lists as a terrorist organization. The ministry tweeted that six “terrorists were neutralized” in the aerial bombardment.

The airstrike was also confirmed by Kurdish officials. The Kurdistan government-owned TV channel Kurdistan 24 cited local politician Jamal Aradne as saying that a PKK vehicle had been struck and that three civilians had been injured.

    Diplomat killed in Erbil

The bombing happened a day after the deadly shooting of a Turkish diplomat in the regional capital of Erbil.

The PKK has denied responsibility for the consular official’s killing along with two others at a restaurant on Wednesday.

But Ankara insists the separatist group, which has fought a decadeslong insurgency against Turkey demanding Kurdish autonomy in the south of the country, was behind the shooting.

Turkey has been conducting a ground offensive and bombing campaign to root out the PKK from the Qandil mountains since May.

The raids saw senior PKK leader Diyar Gharib Mohammed killed along with two other fighters.

One of the main Kurdish parties in Iraqi Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), now leads the regional government from Erbil and enjoys good political and trade relations with Turkey.

The government condemned the shooting as a “premeditated terrorist attack.””

“Authorities in the Spanish city of Melilla say that around 200 migrants have tried to climb a barrier separating the European country’s north African enclave from Morocco.

The local office of the Spanish government’s representative said Friday that one migrant suffered a fractured leg while six Spanish police were injured when around 50 migrants managed to scale the security fence surrounding the coastal city.

The other 150 were repelled by Spanish and Moroccan border guards.

The migrants who reached Spanish soil were taken to a holding center, where they can ask for asylum while authorities start procedures to return them to their countries of origin.

“A doctor, two medical staff members, and a translator have been arrested at a state-run camp for migrants and refugees in Greece, accused of issuing medical notes for non-existent conditions to exempt migrants from deportation.

The alleged criminal operation occurred on Samos, one of five Greek islands where movement of asylum seekers is restricted.

The suspects, who face charges of fraud, bribery, breach of duty, and membership of criminal organization, allegedly charged 300-500 euros ($335-560) for the medical notes that would allow migrants to travel to the Greek mainland for a hospital exam or remain on Samos for medical tests.

Five other doctors were arrested as alleged accomplices along with one migrant man.

The arrests followed an investigation by the police’s international affairs bureau in the northern city of Thessaloniki.”

  10. CBC – ‘Exemplary’ medical student who raped unconscious woman caved to temptation, lawyer argues

Prachur Shrivastava was found guilty last year of a Calgary sexual assault

A former medical student who raped an unconscious woman “availed himself of an opportunity” he could not resist due to the stress of “leading an exemplary life,” his lawyer has argued.

Prachur Shrivastava, 27, was convicted of sexual assault following a trial last year.

On Thursday, Alberta Justice Jolaine Antonio heard a second round of sentencing submissions from Crown and defence and will make her decision next month on how much time Shrivastava should spend behind bars.

Shrivastava was partying with fellow medical students and others in Calgary in 2014 when he raped a young woman who had passed out in a friend’s living room.

CBC News is calling the victim Laura because a court-ordered publication ban protects her identity.

In Alberta, the prison-time starting point for a major sexual assault — one that involves penetration — is three years.

Initially, defence lawyer Dale Fedorchuk asked the judge to send his client to jail for 90 days on weekends, but on Thursday, he submitted a new position of about nine months in jail.

Fedorchuk said people who are held to high standards like his client make human errors, giving the examples of Bill Cosby and Tiger Woods.

Shrivastava’s actions were a case of “drunken stupidity,” argued Fedorchuk, who said his client was “faced with an opportunity, tempted in that moment” and made “a stupid decision to cave to temptation.”

    ‘Exceptional people do not rape’

Prosecutor Tiffany Dwyer proposed a four- to five-year sentence and took issue with Fedorchuk’s classification of his client as exceptional.

“Exceptional people do not rape unconscious women,” said Dwyer. “The fact that he’s educated and his parents are wealthy does not change what he did.”

“Incapacity of a woman is not an ‘opportunity’ … it wasn’t an opportunity, it was a choice. He is a predator.”

Shrivastava had to withdraw from the University of Toronto’s medicine program when charges were laid but the school did allow him to complete a master’s degree in biotechnology. He is now employed by a California-based medical technology firm and has two job offers.

    Shrivastava apologizes

Fedorchuk pointed out to the judge that those job offers are from women.

“There is a significant and meaningful negative impact this is going to have on his life going forward,” said Fedorchuk, who noted that even if his client gets a pardon or a record suspension, “anyone with the internet” will learn about Shrivastava’s conviction.

Shrivastava was given the chance to speak at the conclusion of sentencing submissions, offering an apology.

“I never meant for this to happen,” he said. “I hope I can contribute and become a contributing member of society as I have done in the past.”

His victim does not believe the apology is genuine.

“The rapist chose to make this his life,” said Laura in a phone interview with CBC News. “At least he had a choice in making this his life. I don’t.”

“If he honestly felt any remorse, he would have pled guilty. Instead, he tortured me by playing innocent.”

  11. Germany: Thunberg promises to ‘never give up’ at climate rally in Berlin

Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenage climate activist and Nobel peace prize nominee joined protesters at a ‘Fridays for Future’ event in Berlin’s Invaliden park on Friday.

Thunberg briefly addressed the crowd gathered in the German capital.

“You can often feel like the world, the future of the world rests on your shoulders, like this is a big burden. And you always feel like you are not doing enough. But we are doing more than we can. We are not the ones who are not doing enough. It is the people in power, the politicians and business leaders and the media who are not doing enough. And they are the ones who should feel responsibility,” said the activist.

She went on to assure that she would ‘never give up’ in her fight for climate justice.

The ‘Fridays for Future’ strike movement came to prominence through the then 15-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who conducted a solitary protest outside the Swedish parliament in 2018. Since then, Thunberg has galvanised tens of thousands of students across the world to walk out of school on Fridays to demand stronger action from their governments on climate change.

“Hezbollah’s top figure, Salman Raouf Salman, stands accused of the bombing of a Jewish centre perpetrated 25 years ago in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires.

The United States has introduced sanctions on a senior Hezbollah leader, a Colombian-born Lebanese national Salman Raouf Salman, over his complicity in terrorist attacks, according to the US Treasury. The top Hezbollah operative is accused of coordinating the bombing of a Jewish community centre in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires in 1994.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it added Salman Raouf Salman to its specially designated nationals list.

Treasury undersecretary of terrorism and financial intelligence Sigal Mandelker stated that Salman has continued to orchestrate terrorist operations in the Western Hemisphere for Hezbollah since the attack in Buenos Aires.

On Thursday, Argentina’s authorities designated the Lebanese-based Hezbollah movement as a terrorist organisation and decreed a freeze of all financial assets belonging to the group.

The move coincided with the 25th anniversary of the violent attack on the Mutual Israelite Association of Argentina community centre in Buenos Aires in 1994 that left 85 people dead and hundreds injured. Hezbollah denied any role in the attack.”

  15. Iran, downed drone, ‘seized’ tanker: Future of enemy drone management meets well-worn past of sanctions-busting
    By J.E. Dyer July 19, 2019

Start with the drone first. The USS Boxer (LHD-4)/11 MEU Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), which deployed from San Diego on 1 May, entered the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, and according to a statement delivered personally by President Trump, an Iranian drone that approached too closely was shot down in the process (video of Trump’s statement below).

That would be a first. It’s not the first time an Iranian drone has flown too close to one of our warships. An Iranian drone was allowed to literally overfly – operate directly overhead – the carrier USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75) on 12 January 2016, the same day the U.S. Navy patrol boats were seized by Iran and the crew held at gunpoint. (In the Obama years, an Iranian P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft was also allowed to overfly one of our carriers, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), in 2012.)

But it seems Trump is having no more of that sort of thing. It’s noteworthy that he made the announcement about the drone himself. Clearly he wants to emphasize it as a U.S. posture.

  16. ‘Declined detainers’: ICE releases list of migrants accused of crimes after police ignore detainer requests
By Daily Caller News Foundation July 19, 2019

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is releasing quarterly reports of illegal immigrants accused of crimes in an effort to highlight the dangers posed by “sanctuary city” policies after local police denied retainer requests.

ICE released its first “Declined Detainer Report,” a comprehensive list of illegal aliens who were accused of criminal actions after local jails refused to honor ICE detainers and allowed them to be released back into the public. The list pertains to detainers issued between Jan. 1, 2018 and March 31, 2018 — the second quarter of the 2018 fiscal year.

“So you have murders, you have people who did property crime, spousal abuse, driving under the influence, possession of narcotics — they came into custody of local authorities and were released after ICE filed a detainer,” former acting ICE Director Ron Vitiello said Monday on Fox News. “This is a danger to those communities, and [the detainer report] highlights what happens.”

  18. Egypt: At least 20 killed in airstrikes in northern Sinai (arabnews, Jul 19, 2019)
    http://www.arabnews.com/node/1528021/middle-east

“Egyptian security officials say airstrikes targeting militants are underway in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 20 insurgents.

Officials said that Egypt’s air force on Friday hit more than 100 mountainous hideouts of militant groups in the city of El-Arish and the small town of Bir Al-Abd. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

The airstrikes come on the heels of a suicide bombing attack that left two killed, including a soldier and a civilian Thursday in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid.

A day earlier, militants beheaded four people and kidnapped a fifth in Bir Al-Abd, after accusing them of cooperating with security forces. Daesh claimed responsibility for both attacks.”

  19. MIGRANT BOAT SMUGGLER DECAPITATES PASSENGER WITH KNIFE AND THROWS HEAD OVERBOARD FOR DRINKING HIS JUICE

A migrant smuggler has been detained in Spain after allegedly beheading a passenger over a stolen juice drink during a recent journey that departed from Morocco.

Oumar Diallo, from Guinea in West Africa, was transporting over a dozen people across the Alboran Sea at the time of the incident, which took place in early July according to the newspaper El Mundo. The outlet reported each person paid €2,500 for the trip across a stretch of 200 kilometers.

It is alleged that Diallo reacted violently after a fatigued passenger drank his juice, taken from a survival pack. Spanish media reported that Diallo decapitated the victim with a dagger before throwing the head overboard. The body remained on the boat for another 45 minutes.

“He has cut off his head. He has gone crazy,” a young passenger who was on the vessel at the time of the attack told a Red Cross volunteer upon their rescue, El Mundo reported.

The migrants who survived were taken in by the Spanish Commission for Refugees (CEAR) and transported from Almeria to a shelter in Malaga, which is a coastal city in the Costa del Sol region. Diallo was held by local police as investigators worked to find out what happened.

According to Il Giornale, some passengers who witnessed the atrocity have since had to receive psychological treatment. Some are suffering from anxiety attacks and an inability to sleep.

Omar Naji, president of the Moroccan Human Rights Association, said that his organization was already aware of the man’s record of trafficking humans, including vulnerable women.

Naji said the suspect is known to convince people to travel to Morocco promising them a better future. When they arrive he requests up to €3,000 to take them to Spain by boat. Naji added: “We [flagged] him several times. Moroccan police detained him and set him free again.”

Local media reported police in Morocco recently arrested two of Diallo’s partners who were in charge of obtaining boats used to transport people. They were reportedly a father and son. The victim in the beheading incident has not yet been identified by law enforcement. It remains unclear what type of boat was used.

According to campaigners from aid group CEAR, there was a significant increase in asylum claims in Spain last year. It said the country’s government has rejected three out of four asylum applications.

“Spain became the main country of entry to Europe with more than 65,383 irregular arrivals by sea and land, almost triple [of 2017],” it said in a blog. “Spain received 51% of maritime arrivals to the EU through the Mediterranean. Most boats reached the Andalusian coast. At least 811 people died trying to reach Spanish coasts, one third of all registered in the Mediterranean.”

  21. Antifa is the militant wing of the Democrat Party

The Antifa terrorism entered a new phase last weekend when a 69-year-old man attacked an immigration detention facility in Tacoma, Wash. His weapons consisted of incendiary devices and a rifle. After setting a car afire, he was shot dead by police. He had a history of Antifa sympathizing and sent several “farewell” letters to friends anticipating being killed in his planned attack.

    Let’s put this into context.

After the Civil War, the Democratic Party developed a military wing. It was and still is called the Ku Klux Klan. As most terror organizations, it was formed to achieve a political outcome. At that time, its mission was to ensure that then-freed black slaves could not vote or exercise all the rights of citizenship.

Today, the military wing of the left is Antifa, short for “antifascist.” The name itself is in keeping with the radical left ploys by seizing control of the language and naming things incorrectly so as to mask the true mission.

If one compares the tactics used by Antifa at its various riots, vandalism, beatings and intimidations, there is no significant difference between them and the havoc wreaked by the Brown Shirts that hastened the rise of the Nazi Party in post-World War I Germany.

I know that there will be those who say that an argument is lost when the words “Nazi” or “Hitler” are used. This is true when they are used as name-calling epithets; however, the purpose of this column is to point out the tactics being used by Antifa leftists and that the comparison made to Brown Shirts is valid.

    http://www.gopusa.com/?p=72845?omhide=true

Richard: It is not just antifa that is a militant arm of the Dems, so are BLM and BAMN, all were formed and are to an extent controlled by the Dems. All three are getting ready to attempt to use physical force to seize control of the United States.

I knew the roadblocks were practice but thought it was practice for shutting down the cities, not for an ambush. Yes they do create a kill squad and it would be easy to turn one of the blocked roads into an abattoir. This tactic would work on until the people started running over the protesters.

As for the rest of the left win militias tactics, some are good but all are of limited use and depend on troops that are better trained then the current crop of members. In my opinion by the time the left wing militias gain the expertise that will allow them to take full advantage of their current tactics the war will have devolved into an asymmetric war with the riots being crushed before they get very big.

White House National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis the US is aware of reports, adding: “The US will continue to work with our allies and partners to defend our security and interests against Iran’s malign behaviour.” His comments come as Saudi Almarsd Online Newspaper reported a second British oil tanker had been seized. A second oil tanker, the British-operated, Liberian-flagged Mesdar, turned sharply north towards Iran’s coast on Friday afternoon after passing westward through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf, according toRefinitiv tracking data.

The turn took place at about 1600 GMT, the data showed, about 40 minutes after a similar course shift by the Stena Impero tanker that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had captured.

There was no immediate word from the Guards about the second tanker or from the operator of the second tanker on what had prompted the change in direction along the vital international oil shipping route.

Saudi Almarsd Online Newspaper tweeted: “Iran’s Revolutionary Guard detains a second oil tanker operated by a British company.”

  23. New Investigation Claims Rep. Omar Came Here Via Immigration Fraud
    July 19, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

While Republicans were frantically apologizing for President Trump, David Steinberg was doing some important research. This piece appears at Power Line, which had taken much of the lead in researching and investigating Rep. Ilhan Omar, as it previously had, Rep. Keith Ellison.

These allegations from within the Somali community both shed some light and raise some interesting questions about Omar’s odd marriage.

  24. How a Silicon Valley Orgy Led to a $100,000 Check for Elizabeth Warren
    The new Democrat normal.
    July 19, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

The path to the $100,000 payment that allowed Senator Elizabeth Warren to access the DNC voter file began in a town near San Francisco with an anonymous man in a bunny suit and some ecstasy.

But that’s just because they do things a little differently in San Fran.

The Bay Area is home to the dot coms that dominate the country. And the parts of the country that they haven’t bought yet, they’re trying to buy. But even the masters of the universe need to relax. And on a fine spring evening, a “sex party” was held at the home of Democrat dot com donor, Steve Jurvetson.

“Sex party” would become a term of contention. The official title was either an “Afterthought” party or a costume “party on the edge of the earth” at Casa Jurvey by the Sea. Steve Jurvetson was there in a “feather vest and hat” and Google co-founder Sergey Brin was “bare-chested in a vest”.

A year earlier, Barack Obama and his notoriously scandal-free administration had named Jurvetson a “Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship”.

But in the spring of ‘17, a different kind of diplomacy was taking place in Half Moon Bay.

“Photos reveal a group of men and women lying close together, kissing and massaging one another,” on the pillows and white faux fur blanketing the room, Emily Chang wrote in Brotopia. A venture capitalist in a bunny suit offered the anonymous female correspondent a bag full of powder. She tasted some of the Molly and began making out with the dot com VC in the bunny suit while his wife watched.

  25. Dems Pass Bill to Wipe Out Almost 1% of the Workforce
    July 19, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

It’s the House so this bill is virtue signaling for the upcoming election.

But if it were implemented, the $15 minimum wage hike would wipe out an estimated 1.3 million jobs (0.8% of the workforce) or as much as 3.7 million jobs.

Predictably the Democrats don’t care. Or, rather, they win either way.

Some workers get raises. Others go on welfare.

  26. “Total Anarchy”: Media Now Encouraging and Politicians Tolerating Left-wing Terrorism
    Written by Selwyn Duke

As the terrorist who attacked the ICE facility “and the many other heroic comrades before him have made clear, there are many ways to fight back against a violent fascist regime. Perhaps it’s time for more of us to put our thinking caps on.” This line wasn’t disgorged by an Antifa group, but by Teen Vogue “labor columnist” and NPR correspondent Kim Kelly. Kelly likened the now-deceased terrorist (shot by police), Willem Van Spronsen, to WWII partisans who fought the Nazis.

She’s not alone. Columnist and Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King called the 69-year-old Van Spronsen the “first martyr attempting to liberate imprisoned refugees,” implying that he was like John Brown, the abolitionist who led the Harpers Ferry raid in 1859.

Also, incredibly, Van Spronsen — a self-identified Antifa member who attacked the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington, on Saturday armed with an AR-15 rifle and incendiary devices — “appears to have been part of a May 5 episode of CNN’s United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell,” reports Fox News.

Bell called the Antifa terrorists “‘good guys,’ going to a gun range with members and even questioning why ‘more white people’ don’t share their viewpoints.” Bell also could be seen on the show admiring one Antifa member’s weapons (Monday Fox News segment on CNN and Bell below).

  27. Kosovo PM Steps Down After Being Summoned to Hague Court Over Disputed Territory’s War Crimes (sputniknews, Jul 19, 2019)

“Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj told a press conference in Pristina on Friday that he will not remain at his post because he cannot be a head of government and a suspect at the same time. Haradinaj was a Kosovo Liberation Army officer in 1998-99 during the armed conflict in the territory with Serbian forces.

Kosovan Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj said on Friday that he is leaving his post after being summoned to The Hague war crimes tribunal over Kosovo’s atrocities in the conflict leading up to the territory’s breakaway from Serbia.

During a press conference in Pristina on Friday, Haradinaj said that the government will continue to perform its duties, promising to notify all relevant institutions of his decision.

The outgoing head of government added that it is now up to Kosovo’s president to begin consultations for the date of the elections.

Ramush Haradinaj has served as the third prime minister of Kosovo since assuming office on 9 September 2017.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in the Hague was established in 2015 to bring former Kosovo Liberation Army guerrillas to justice for their brutality in the Kosovo war.

The Republic of Kosovo is a disputed territory partially recognised as an independent nation by 102 UN member states. The Albanian-majority territory declared its independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. Belgrade claims Kosovo as its own territory. Moscow, along with China and several other nations, have supported Belgrade by not recognizing the independence of Kosovo.”

  30. American ISIS ‘sniper’ charged in US after transfer from SDF custody in Syria (thedefensepost, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://thedefensepost.com/2019/07/19/american-isis-sniper-charged-asainov/

“A naturalized American who was allegedly an Islamic State sniper has been charged in New York with material support for a terror group after being captured in Syria and repatriated to the United States, the Department of Justice announced on Friday, July 19.

Kazakhstan-born Ruslan Maratovich Asainov fought for Islamic State in Syria for five years before he was captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces and handed over to U.S. custody, the department said in a release.

Asainov, 43, was brought back to the United States on Thursday and was to be arraigned Friday afternoon in federal court in Brooklyn.

According to the published complaint, Asainov had resided in Brooklyn, New York since 1998. On December 24, 2013, he traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, a common transit point for Syria.

After entering Syria, Asainov joined ISIS, and became a sniper, the Justice Department said. “Over time, the defendant rose through the ranks to become an ISIS ’emir’ in charge of training other ISIS members in the use of weapons.”

He stayed in contact with some people in the United States, sending messages and photographs of himself from the battlefield.

He claimed that it was “normal” for him to be carrying a rifle, and by early 2015, he was “touting his allegiance to ISIS and threatening another individual that ISIS “will fucking kill you” and that the individual should be “fucking scared for the rest of your life,” the detention memo said.

“We are the worst terrorist organization in the world that has ever existed,” one of his messages from 2015 said, according to the court documents.

The indictment alleges that in March 2015, Asainov asked a confidential informant to send him approximately $2,800 so he could purchase a scope for his rifle. Asainov then sent the confidential informant two photographs of himself holding an assault rifle fitted with a scope.

Asainov also tried to recruit another individual in the United States to join the group, who, he did not know, was an informant for the New York Police Department.

It is unclear when and where Asainov was detained by the SDF in Syria.

“The United States is committed to holding accountable those who have left this country in order to fight for ISIS,” Assistant Attorney General John Demers said in a statement.

“We hope countries around the world, including our European allies and partners, will likewise repatriate and prosecute their own citizens for traveling to support ISIS,” he said.”

  31. Saudi Arabia Issues Fifth Alert to its Nationals in Turkey (aawsat, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1819731/saudi-arabia-issues-fifth-alert-its-nationals-turkey

“For the fifth time this year, the Saudi embassy in Ankara warned Saudi tourists from being subject to exploitation, less than a month after issuing a similar alert.

In a statement Wednesday, it said the new alert came after several Saudi tourists fell victim to theft by Turkish car rental companies at Trabzon Airport and the city center.

This includes the withdrawal of money from their credit cards to fix their vehicles after they were in minor accidents or after suffering minor malfunctions in an attempt to force them to pay more money, it explained.

Earlier this month, the embassy issued a warning to its citizens regarding the safety of their belongings after a spate of cases involving the theft of Saudi passports in Istanbul.

It urged them to keep their belongings, valuables and passports safe, especially when visiting crowded areas in Turkish cities.??

The alert was issued after several Saudis reported that they were victims of pickpocketing in some regions of Turkey.

Asharq Al-Awsat reported that 165 Saudi passports were stolen in three Turkish tourist spots in the past four months.?

Saoud Al Nafei, Head of GCC Land Transport Committee, told Asharq Al-Awsat on Thursday that the spread of car rental gangs in Turkey is a sign of lax Turkish efforts to protect tourists.

“Tourists should examine receipts when renting a car and make sure they do not include any sums that should be paid later,” he said.

Dr. Nasser Altayyar, a Saudi tourism expert, told Asharq Al-Awsat that the number of Saudi tourists in Turkey has decreased by around 30 percent compared to the same period last year.”

    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1819656/us-centcom-chief-evidence-points-iran-links-attacks-saudi-arabia

“US Central Command chief Kenneth McKenzie stated on Thursday that evidence points to Iran’s connection to attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

The US general was talking to reporters in Riyadh at a joint news conference with General Prince Fahd bin Turki, commander of the Saudi-led Arab coalition fighting the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen.

Asked by Asharq Al-Awsat about the growing Iranian threat in the region, he replied that Washington was not seeking war with Tehran.

The US is seeking to change Iran’s behavior and deter its destabilizing actions in the region, he added.

The attacks by Iran’s proxies on Saudi Arabia are a problem that must be addressed, McKenzie stressed.

This is an international responsibility, not just an American one, he remarked. The US will ensure that it will be part of the solution.

“We are currently talking with the international community about the right to freedom of navigation in the Middle East that will include passage to the Strait of Hormuz and passage to the Bab al Mandeb,” Mckenzie said.

Saudi officials took McKenzie on a tour of an exhibit displaying missiles and drones produced by Iran and used in the Houthi attacks.”

“Saudi Ambassador to the United Nations Abdallah Al-Mouallimi expressed Saudi Arabia’s and other Arab countries’ concern about Iran’s ‘aggressive’ actions, which is destabilizing the Gulf region.

The ‘aggressive’ Iranian actions include the use of drones by their proxies in Yemen, the Houthi militia, which aims to create chaos by targeting civilian area in the Kingdom.

The drones and arms are sent by Iran to the Houthis. The Iranian regime also has been threatening navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea with use of limpet mines to target shipping in the busy sea-lanes.

“It’s high time that the Houthis accept the UN resolution 2216 and put an end to their illegitimate occupation of the centers of powers in Yemen,” Al-Mouallimi said in a press conference here…”

  34. Govt aims to bring religious schools into mainstream (dawn, Jul 19, 2019)
    https://www.dawn.com/news/1495017/govt-aims-to-bring-religious-schools-into-mainstream

“The government has agreed on a plan to overhaul instruction at madressahs or religious schools to bring the institutions closer into line with conventional schools and curb extremist teaching, Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said on Friday.

The plan is the latest effort to address longstanding concerns that the roughly 30,000 madressahs in Pakistan have a rigid curriculum based around religious studies that fails to prepare students for employment after they graduate.

Under the plan, agreed with the madressah umbrella organisation, Wafaq-ul-madaris, religious schools would be registered and helped to strengthen conventional teaching in subjects like English, science and mathematics.

They would remain responsible for religious teaching and in exchange would have to commit to ensuring that extremist teaching was not part of the curriculum.

“There will be no preaching of hate speech of any kind against any religion or sect,” he said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, facing heavy international pressure to clamp down on militant groups operating from Pakistan territory, announced plans earlier this year to “mainstream” the madressahs, often associated with feeding radicalised youth to militant Islamist groups.

Numerous similar attempts have been made over the years, going back to the time of former President Pervez Musharraf almost two decades ago.

Mindful of the risk of backlash in a deeply conservative country, Mahmood said the government was not seeking confrontation with the madressahs, which are often the only form of education available to poor families.

“We will not be taking over the madressahs,” he told reporters at a meeting in his office in Islamabad. “This is not a crackdown. We are looking at this as a means of facilitating.”

The schools would remain independent of government control and while he said in his view they should not be associated with political movements, there would be no formal ban.

“We are not making this a precondition,” he said.

Regional offices of the education ministry would oversee registration and help with issues including raising standards and opening bank accounts for the madressahs which raise their own funds and are organised according to particular denominations.

He said the changes would take effect gradually, with a first group of madressahs taking examinations next year.

With issues including finding the funds to hire thousands of new teachers and a separate but related push to develop a new unified national curriculum, he was unwilling to estimate a timeframe.

“This will not happen in a day,” he said.”
