Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  2. Germany: Iraqi fare dodger threatens to cut off head of train attendant
    +++
Early last Sunday morning a “fare dodger” threatened RE 11 employees of the Abellio Railway with death. As it turned out later, the Iraqi citizen was in Germany without permission. Federal police arrested him. Around 05:00 a. m. the 22-year-old used the RE 11 from Essen to Dortmund. In the train, a 45-year-old Abellio employee checked the tickets. He found that the 22-year-old was not in possession of one. In order to be able to charge a fine, he asked the man to hand over an identity document. The man is said to have reacted immediately with verbal aggressiveness. The man rejected the offer to leave the train in Bochum. In addition, he is said to have threatened the employee with the words: “If you call the police, I will cut your head off. I’ll find you. I’m going to kill you”. After the train arrived at Dortmund Central Station, the Federal Police investigated the Iraqi. It turned out that he was staying in Germany without permission. He was then taken to police custody. The Federal Police initiated criminal proceedings for fraudulent promotions, threats and illegal residence.

  3. Pakistan Arrests Hafiz Saeed, Chief of Outlawed Jamat-ud Dawa (sputniknews, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/asia/201907171076271230-pakistan-arrests-hafiz-saeed-chief-of-outlawed-jamat-ud-dawa/

“n Wednesday, Pakistan arrested Hafiz Saeed, chief of the outlawed Jamat-ud Dawa, earlier known as Lashkar-e-Taiba, and has remanded him to judicial custody. Saeed is the mastermind behind several terror attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Reports from Pakistan indicate he was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department of Punjab in Pakistan, while travelling to Gujranwala from Lahore and moved to a jail on judicial remand.

Hafiz Saeed is a UN-designated global terrorist and is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The US has announced a bounty of $10 million for providing evidence leading to his conviction. But he has enjoyed active patronage of the military establishment in Pakistan, which freed Hafiz Saeed several times after arresting him in the past.

Earlier this month, the fugitive was arrested along with 12 accomplices in a terror funding case. He is already facing 23 terror-related cases in Pakistan, but Islamabad did not produce any evidence in court.

The arrest comes ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s maiden visit to the US next week.

New Delhi considers Saeed a most wanted terrorist, for his alleged involvement in several secessionist cases in the country, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, 2006 Mumbai train bombings and the 2001 attack on Indian Parliament. India had also banned the organizations headed by him – Jamat-ud Dawa and its earlier formation Lashkar-e-Taiba.

It has demanded his extradition from Pakistan, but Islamabad refuses to concede, citing “lack of evidence against him”.”

    • reuters Pakistan arrests accused mastermind of Mumbai attacks

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) – Pakistan authorities on Wednesday arrested Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of a four-day militant attack on the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008, on terror finance charges, a spokesman for the chief minister of Punjab province said.

The arrest came days before a visit to Washington by Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has vowed to crack down on militant groups operating in Pakistan.

Saeed, designated a terrorist by the United States and the United Nations, is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), or Army of the Pure, the militant group blamed by the United States and India for the Mumbai attacks, which killed more than 160 people.

He has denied any involvement and said his network, which includes 300 seminaries and schools, hospitals, a publishing house and ambulance services, has no ties to militant groups.

A spokesman for Punjab Governor Shahbaz Gill said Saeed was arrested near the town of Gujranwala in central Pakistan.

“The main charge is that he is gathering funds for banned outfits, which is illegal,” the spokesman said.

The Punjab Counter Terrorism Department said in a statement that Saeed had been arrested while going to a court in Gujranwala to seek pre-arrest bail but was remanded in custody.

Pakistan, which is included on a so-called gray list compiled by the Financial Action Task Force, a money laundering and terror finance watchdog, has been under increasing pressure to stop the financing of militant groups.

However, an Indian government official said that merely arresting Saeed was not enough and that he should be put on trial and convicted.

“We want real action, not these kinds of steps that are reversible. One court orders his arrest, another frees him,” said the official, who has close knowledge of diplomatic issues with Pakistan.

He said the sense in New Delhi was that Pakistan was taking steps such as these before Khan’s trip to the United States, which has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to Saeed’s conviction over the Mumbai attacks.

“We have seen this before,” the official said. “After the visit is over, things are usually back to what they were before.”

In 2017, Saeed was put under house arrest by Pakistani authorities and subsequently released after being cleared of charges against him, drawing strong criticism from Washington and New Delhi.

Lashkar-e-Taiba, designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department, aims to drive India out of the disputed region of Kashmir and establish an Islamic state across Kashmir, Pakistan, and India.

“Militants from the Yemeni Houthi movement have been conducting attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Jizan Airport on a regular basis, with the latest attack taking place the day before.

The movement announced on Wednesday that it had launched a drone attack on Jizan Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, Reuters reported.

According to Houthi spokesman Yahya Saria, the attack has disrupted airport operations. Riyadh has yet to confirm the statement.

On Tuesday, Riyadh said that the Houthis had attacked Saudi warplane hangars at Jizan Airport and the drone was intercepted by the military.

The Saudi-led coalition has been engaged in the civil war in Yemen since March 2015, when it began carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi militant group at the request of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. In response, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks against the kingdom.”

    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1154423/Parliament-Salih-Khater-guilty-attempted-murder

“A STUDENT who drove at cyclists and police officers outside the Houses of Parliament has been found guilty at the Old Bailey of two charges of attempted murder.

Salih Khater, 30, had claimed he was looking for somewhere to buy breakfast when he careered into the gates outside the Palace of Westminster. Cyclists were left injured in the street after Khater drove into them. A jury today found him guilty of two counts of attempted murder.

On August 14 last year he drove into a security lane and crashed into barriers as two police officers jumped out of the way.

The attack was caught on CCTV footage which was played in court.

The Old Bailey heard Khater, of Highgate Street, Birmingham, wanted to cause maximum carnage and it was “miraculous” that no-one was killed.

But Khater claimed he came to London to find the Sudanese embassy to get a visa, “got lost” around Westminster and panicked.

The jury deliberated over two days before rejecting his explanation and finding him guilty of two charges of attempted murder.

Khater made no reaction as he was found guilty of the charges…”

“Australia will not soften its stand against illegal immigrants or refugees seeking asylum and government benefits, a report released on Wednesday shows.

Refugees who have been stopped at Australia’s borders are held in offshore detention centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

But rights groups and the left-wing Labor opposition have called on the government to open the doors and let them in, AFP reports.

  9. 70-Year-Old Venice Priest Beaten By ‘Baby Gang’ Of Migrants (breitbart, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/07/17/70-year-old-venice-priest-beaten-baby-gang-migrants/

“A 70-year-old priest in Venice claims to have been subjected to threats and physical assault from a gang of migrant youths after he confronted their aggressive behaviour.

Don Roberto Trevisol, the parish priest of San Giorgio Martire di Chirignago, wrote about his experiences in a parochial newsletter describing the almost daily occurrences of vandalism in and around the church, Il Giornale reports.

The 70-year-old claimed that a gang of migrant youths, from Albania and Serbia, were behind the incidents and that they had tried multiple times to break into the church, damaging tiles on the roof.

He eventually managed to catch the youths in the process of vandalism and initially told them off and tried to detain the leader of the gang until the police could arrive.

Later that same day, he caught another group of youths and tried to shout at them to get them to leave but was met with a punch to the face by one of the gang members. While trying to follow the youths, Trevisol claims they insulted him calling him a “paedophile priest of shit”.

“As I continue to follow him he shouts to me: ‘But do you know that I come from Albania?’. And then suddenly he strikes me with two powerful slaps that break my glasses and make me lose a lens,” Trevisol said.

“Faced with these facts one can. One: Be happy and say, poor boys … Two: Be cowardly and look away … Three: Be determined to demand respect for oneself and for everyone, even if it means being threatened, offended and eventually beaten. I stand for the third option,” he added.

The incident comes only months after a similar case in Greece in which an Orthodox priest was beaten by Syrian migrants in front of his church in Athens.

So-called “baby gangs” have become a major problem in Italy with one underage gang torturing a and beating man in his 60s for months before finally killing him earlier this year in April.”

  10. Taliban close Afghan health facilities run by Swedish group (abcnews, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/taliban-close-afghan-health-facilities-run-swedish-group-64384034

“The Taliban forced a Swedish non-profit group to close 42 health facilities it runs in eastern Afghanistan, the organization said Wednesday, the latest attempt by the insurgents to show strength amid negotiations to end the country’s nearly 18-year war.

In Sweden, the group’s director called the closures “an obvious violation of human rights and international humanitarian law” and demanded the facilities be allowed to reopen right away.

The Taliban currently control nearly half of Afghanistan and are more powerful than at any time since the October 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

Sonny Mansson, the country director of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, told The Associated Press that the Taliban threatened the NGO’s staff by saying that if they do not close the facilities, “it would have consequences for themselves and their families.”

“We treat equally anyone who needs medical care regardless of who they are. Everyone who needs help gets it,” Mansson said, adding the facilities that closed over the weekend were in a Taliban-controlled area of Maidan Wardan province while others are still open in the province’s government-controlled areas.

Parwiz Ahmad Faizi, the group’s communications manager, said the closures came after Afghan forces last week raided a clinic run by the NGO in Daimirdad district. The Afghan troops, acting on intelligence, were allegedly looking for suspected Taliban fighters hiding in the clinic.

Ahmad Khalid Fahim, program director for the Swedish group, said two staff members, a guard and a lab worker, and two other people were killed in the attack, while a fifth person has been missing.

Insurgents contacted the staff and ordered the NGO to shut down, Fahim added. Faizi said the closures would affect health services for around 6,000 patients, particularly women and children.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the closure of the NGO’s facilities.

The developments come amid stepped-up efforts by the United States to find a negotiated end to the country’s conflict, America’s longest war. Afghan talks that brought together the country’s warring sides ended last week in Qatar’s capital, Doha, with a statement that appeared to move closer to peace by laying down the outlines of a roadmap for the country’s future.

The same Swedish-run health facility in Daimirdad was hit in 2016, in a joint raid by Afghan and foreign forces, said Fahim. Three people were killed in that attack, after which the NGO demanded an investigation but no probe results were ever released.

“We request the Afghan government give us an immediate response as to why the health facility came under attack,” Fahim said.

The Swedish organization, which has been in Afghanistan over 30 years, runs 77 health facilities in six out of nine districts of in Maidan Wardan. The closure of the 42 likely more than slashes its activities in half.

Mansson dismissed claims the Taliban had used their clinic in Daimirdad as shelter, which may have triggered the Afghan forces’ raid.

Mansson said the organization informed the Afghan government of the closures but that the authorities have done nothing beyond acknowledging the shutdowns and saying “we regret it happen.”

“We demand immediate reopening of all health facilities for the people and we strongly urge all parties involved in conflict to refrain from such actions which deliberately puts civilian lives at risk,” Mansson later said in a statement.”

  16. zero hedge – Three Iranians Caught Smuggling “Many Tons” Of Nuke-Related Material Out Of US

A major case involving three Iranian citizens who for years allegedly smuggled nuclear related materials into Iran from a US broker has been revealed this week in a New York federal court.

The scheme involved illegally exporting “many tons” of carbon fiber out of the United States between 2008 and 2013, which federal prosecutors say violated existing US sanctions and a UN embargo, given the direct military and nuclear use capability of the substance.

One of the three accused, Behzad Pourghannad, was successfully extradited from Germany but the other two, Ali Reza Shokri and Farzin Faridmanesh, remain at large. The conspiracy involved an unidentified broker shipping the banned substance out of the US to Iran via third parties in Europe and the UAE, while paperwork was fabricated to circumvent US export laws.

In a statement, US attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman described that, “Carbon fiber has many aerospace and defense applications, and is strictly controlled to ensure that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Pourghannad and his co-defendants allegedly went to great lengths to circumvent these controls and the United States’ export laws. Together with our law enforcement partners, we will continue to protect our nation’s assets and protect our national security.”

And a statement published to the Department of Justice website noted, “Pourghannad is alleged to have sought to procure for Iran large amounts of carbon fiber — a commodity that can be used in the enrichment of uranium.” The DOJ and FBI further described the conspiracy as seeking to assist “Iran’s destabilizing efforts and make Americans less safe.”

An FBI counterintelligence division chief added, “Iran remains determined to acquire U.S. technology with military applications, and the FBI is just as determined to stop such illegal activity,” according to NBC.

The indictment doesn’t reveal precisely how much carbon fiber is believed to have made it to Iran, and the American-based source of the UN embargoed material is not named, and it’s further unclear if the source was consciously involved in trying to evade sanctions on Iran. The men each face multiple 20-year sentences, but it’s unknown if law enforcement are close to apprehending two of the men who remain on the run.

Iran actually successfully established its own carbon fiber production facility starting in 2011, according to reports, likely now making it less urgent to procure it abroad in places like the United States or Europe.

  17. MEMRI – Hassan Nasrallah: We Have Enough Missiles to Send Israel Back to the Stone Age

Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said in a July 12, 2019 interview on Al-Manar TV (Lebanon) that Hizbullah can target and strike any part of Israel, including Eilat, and that all of northern Israel is within range of Hizbullah’s weapons.

Pointing at a map of Israel, he turned his attention to Israel’s coast, where he said most of Israel’s population lives.

He said Hizbullah can strike all the government buildings, military installations, airports, economic centers, commercial centers, industrial centers, ports, nuclear installations, oil refineries, and power stations that are in this area.

Nasrallah implied that Hizbullah has thousands of missiles that it can use to send Israel “back to the stone age.”

Claiming that Israel is “weaker than a spider’s web,” he said that Israel’s attempts to prevent Hizbullah from acquiring weapons by striking Syria have failed, since Hizbullah already has the weapons in its possession.

He also said that Israel will not succeed in trying to get Iran to leave Syria and that any attempt on the part of Israel to stay out of a potential future conflict in the Middle East would be futile because Iran can bomb Israel “violently” and “swiftly” and because Israel would never be left out of any war in the region, no matter how it starts.

He stated that any war against Iran would lead to a region-wide conflict.

  18. MEMRI –Friday Sermon in Jatt, Israel: Once Muslims Come to Power, They’ll Never Allow Infidels to Rule

Sheikh Ahmad Badran said in a June 28, 2019 Friday sermon in Jatt, Israel that was uploaded to the Internet that the infidels should know that when the Muslims rule over them according to Islam, there will not be a single law that is not Islamic.

He said that Muslims will never allow non-Muslims to rule over Muslims because Allah said infidels will never have sway over Muslims.

Referring to Muslims who say that they are exploiting democracy in order to come to power, Badran advised infidels to not be fooled and explained that once these Muslims come to power, they, too, will never allow infidels to rule over Muslims.

He also explained that when the Muslim Brotherhood “flirts” with infidels by saying they support alternation of power, they are just putting on an act in order to rise to power.

He added that Muslims do not accept under any circumstances a pluralistic system that combines Islam and heresy.

  19. MEMRI –Prominent NY Imam ‘Abdur-Rashid Compares U.S. Founding to Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Imam Al-Hajj Talib ‘Abdur-Rashid of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood (MIB) in Harlem, NY, said in a July 5, 2019 Friday sermon that Allah had spoken on the previous day, which was the Fourth of July, by way of the earthquake in California and the lightning in Washington, D.C. prior to the military parade.

Imam ‘Abdur-Rashid said that Allah’s “words” were warnings and that He could have instead “rained death and destruction” on California and struck the crowd or the tanks at the parade with lightning.

Imam ‘Abdur-Rashid suggested that Allah had mercy on California because of CA Governor Gavin Newsom’s June 18 apology for the Native American genocide in California, and he said that the lightning before the parade had similarly been a sign of Allah’s wrath so that people might take heed and correct their ways.

Addressing people who wonder what is wrong with minorities who do not celebrate the Fourth of July, Imam ‘Abdur-Rashid said that he has yet to see Native Americans celebrating the genocide that was carried out against them, Palestinians celebrating the establishment of the State of Israel, or Japanese people celebrating the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

‘Abdur-Rashid added: “Yet we are here in a land where the equivalent of those things occurred, and we look at the day with less than a sober mind.

” Imam ‘Abdur-Rashid is a prominent NY imam who also serves as the Vice President of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA). Born in 1959, he has been the imam of MIB Harlem since 1989.

‘Abdur-Rashid has previously served as the President Emeritus of the Islamic Leadership Council of Metropolitan New York. The video was uploaded to MIB Harlem’s YouTube channel. Imam ‘Abdul-Rashid’s Facebook page says that MIB Harlem is the “lineal descendant” of Muslim Mosque Inc., which was founded by Malcolm X.

Threats against members of Congress continue to grow, Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund said Tuesday at his first appearance as head of the department before the House Administration Committee.

“We continue to see the threat assessment cases that we’re opening continue to grow,” Sund said. “For fiscal year 2018, we had approximately 4,894 cases. So far, for this year, we have 2,502 cases. So we’re on par to probably break last year’s.”

  21. Vietnam, China embroiled in South China Sea standoff

HANOI (Reuters) – Vietnamese and Chinese ships have been embroiled in a weeks-long standoff near an offshore oil block in disputed waters of the South China Sea, which fall within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, two Washington-based think-tanks said on Wednesday.

China’s U-shaped “nine-dash line” marks a vast expanse of the South China Sea that it claims, including large swathes of Vietnam’s continental shelf where it has awarded oil concessions.
    Report Ad

The Haiyang Dizhi 8, a ship operated by the China Geological Survey, on Monday completed a 12-day survey of waters near the disputed Spratly Islands, according to separate reports by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS)

One of the oil blocks it surveyed is licensed by Vietnam to Spanish energy firm Repsol , which was forced last year and in 2017 to cease operations in Vietnamese waters because of pressure from China.

As the Haiyang Dizhi 8 conducted its survey, nine Vietnamese vessels closely followed it. The Chinese ship was escorted by three China Coast Guard vessels, according to data from Winward Maritime, compiled by C4ADS.

In a separate incident days earlier, the China Coast Guard ship Haijing 35111 maneuvered in what CSIS described as a “threatening manner” toward Vietnamese vessels servicing a Japanese-owned oil rig, the Hakuryu-5, leased by Russian state oil firm Rosneft in Vietnam’s Block 06.1, 370 km (230 miles) southeast of Vietnam.

By LU Staff July 17, 2019

Back on July 1, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-IL), one the four members of the House Democrats’ far-left “Squad,” visited border facilities in Texas with a delegation of House Democrats organized by the Congressional Black Caucus.

Most of the media attention on that visit went to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who dramatized the event with a series of tweets about herself being “physically & sexually” menaced, and migrant women drinking water out of toilet bowls.

But Rep. Pressley spoke at the press conference afterward, and on Tuesday, July 16, Ryan Saavedra turned up a tweet of her remarks from ABC News:

Richard: This is literally a call to arms, one that was made after the attack on the ICE facility. The left has long wanted a civil war and they are close to starting one, it is a war they can’t win but will do a lot of damage to the US and the rule of law. 23. Spygate agonistes: FBI research had revealed 90% of Steele dossier false or unverifiable by early 2017
    By J.E. Dyer July 17, 2019

Information of this kind is tumbling out right and left now. The latest update comes from John Solomon, who had an article at The Hill on Tuesday describing a spreadsheet referenced by his sources at the FBI in which each statement of fact from the Steele dossier was meticulously laid out. It was reportedly a “months-long” effort to check out each item, although Solomon doesn’t say exactly when the process started. It might have been as early as July 2016, given that Steele reportedly passed the initial portions of the dossier to his FBI contact Michael Gaeta in early July. It was probably no later than the end of July, when “Crossfire Hurricane” was launched.

Whenever it started, however, Solomon’s report indicates that in early 2017, the FBI interviewed a Russian who was one of Christopher Steele’s “main providers of intelligence,” and came away quite dubious about the contents of the dossier. According to Solomon, “The FBI came to suspect that the Russian misled Steele, either intentionally or through exaggeration.”

Especially worth noting: the significance of the “facts” thrown in doubt by this judgment. Solomon offers these examples:

  24. Pupils and teachers ‘threatened’ with ‘big kitchen knife’ by terrifying school intruders (express, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1154574/manchester-news-knife-crime-school-attack-St-Matthew-s-Roman-Catholic-High-School-moston

“EMERGENCY SERVICES rushed to a Manchester school after “intruders” jumped over a perimeter fence and threatened pupils with a knife, police have confirmed.

An “altercation between pupils and two men” took place at St Matthew’s Roman Catholic High School in Moston this morning, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. The argument, which sparked “panic” among children, blew up shortly after 11am. The men entered the school premises and threatened both teachers and schoolchildren with what is believed to be a Stanley knife, police added. The incident is not being treated as terror-related and no pupil was injured during the altercation.

A spokesman for GMP said: “At 11.10am on Wednesday July 17 police were called to St Matthews RC High School on Nuthurst Road in Moston to reports of an altercation between pupils and two men at a neighbouring property which backs onto the school.

“According to reports two men had entered the school premises, one of them armed with what is believed to be a Stanley knife, and were making threats to teachers and pupils.

    “Thankfully no one was injured.”

In the statement, the spokesman added two men have been taken into custody and an investigation is underway…”

  25. French Police Station Attacked On Successive Nights With Molotov Cocktails, Fireworks (breitbart, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/07/17/french-police-station-attacked-two-nights-row/

“A police station in the commune of Les Ulis was attacked two nights in a row following the victory of the Algerian national football team over the weekend.

The police station was first targeted on Saturday night and then again on Sunday night when around 50 people attacked the station with Molotov cocktails, fireworks, and rocks, French newspaper Le Parisien reports.

Four police vehicles were also destroyed during the Sunday night attack but no officers were reported injured during the rioting.

Sunday night saw more violence in the Essonne department in Ris-Orangis where five individuals were arrested after throwing rocks and stones at police officers and in Corbeil-Essonnes where a group of between 50 and 80 people threw cinder blocks and glass bottles at officers.

Several hundred supporters of the Algerian football team blocked traffic in the centre of the city of Corbeil-Essonnes, where some clashes where reported.

The violence came after two police were injured in Grigny on Friday night after being targetted by rioters who shot fireworks at them.

The police were also alarmed that several DIY shops in the area saw an abnormally high number of sales of hydrochloric acid.

Last Halloween in Essonne, police were attacked with acid after pursuing youths who had attempted to rob a local grocer.

“All these events demonstrate that the Essonne department is a difficult department where violence is still present. The attack on the Ulis police station is emblematic,” a spokesman for the Alliance police union said.

Essonne is well-known for having a large migrant-background population and was the site for a pro-migration speech earlier this year by French President Emmanuel Macron.

“We can close our eyes or hide, but migration will be happening whether we like it or not,” Macron said and warned we “must not be mistaken… We are in a world of migration.”

The weekend violence was part of a broader wave of violence across France following the Algerian football team’s victory that saw 282 people arrested.”

“A key suspect in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing that killed 22 people was arrested Wednesday at a London airport after being extradited from Libya, British police said.

Greater Manchester Police said Hashem Abedi, the younger brother of suicide bomber Salman Abedi, has been arrested for murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life. He was taken to a London police station and is expected to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.

“This is clearly an important moment in the investigation,” British Prime Minister Theresa May said. “I hope it is a welcome step for the loved ones of all the victims.”

Authorities believe Hashem played a major role in planning the suicide bombing, the deadliest in a string of extremist attacks in London and Manchester in the spring and summer of 2017. Targets in London included Westminster Bridge, London Bridge, and a north London mosque…”

  27. Militants behead 4 people in Egypt’s Sinai (abcnews, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/militants-behead-people-egypts-sinai-64390852

“Egyptian security officials say militants have beheaded four people in the restive northern Sinai Peninsula.

The officials say the militants attacked a group of people in the small town of Bir al-Abd on Wednesday, beheading four and kidnapping a fifth after accusing them of cooperating with security forces.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Egypt is battling an Islamic State-led insurgency in the Sinai that intensified after the military overthrew an elected but divisive Islamist president in 2013. The militants have carried out scores of attacks, mainly targeting the security forces and minority Christians.”

  28. Gunmen in restaurant in northern Iraq kill Turkish diplomat (abcnews, Jul 17, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/attack-restaurant-northern-iraq-kills-turkish-diplomat-64387644

“Unknown gunmen opened fire inside a Turkish-owned restaurant in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil on Wednesday, killing at least one Turkish diplomat stationed in Ankara’s consulate and one Iraqi civilian, Turkish officials and Kurdish security forces said.

The rare shooting in broad daylight jolted the normally quiet city and sent security forces into the streets in an effort to catch the perpetrators, who apparently got away. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the “hateful” attack targeting the Turkish consulate employees and said Turkey was pressing Iraqi and local authorities for the assailants to be apprehended quickly.

The state-run Iraqi news agency identified one of the victims as the deputy general consul at the Turkish consulate.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the attack on the restaurant was carried out by three people. The assailants also fired at Iraqi nationals sitting at a table next to Turkish consulate employees, killing one of them and seriously injuring one other, the minister said.

Such attacks are rare in Irbil. Iraq’s self-governing Kurdish region is politically allied with the Turkish government, but militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who have fought a decades-long insurgency against Ankara, operate in parts of the territory. Ankara labels the group a terrorist organization.

In recent months, the Turkish military has intensified air and ground operations against them across the border.

The shooting occurred at HuQQabaz, a popular, Turkish-owned restaurant in an upscale and high security area only a five-minute drive from the Turkish consulate on the airport road.

Security forces sealed off the area, keeping journalists on the other side of the road as ambulances arrived on the scene. The front window facade of the restaurant was shattered and police stood outside.

The Kurdish Rudaw news agency published a photo of a car parked outside the restaurant with blood stains on it. It said security and emergency officials were responding to the incident and that the scene was on lockdown.

Anadolu Agency, quoting the restaurant’s owner, reported that an attacker in civilian clothes and carrying two weapons opened fire at a group of consulate workers shortly after they entered the restaurant and said a Turkish diplomat died at the site. The Turkish Foreign Ministry said an official of the Turkish consulate in Irbil was “martyred” as a result of an armed attack.

Kurdish security forces later said a Turkish diplomat and an Iraqi civilian were killed and another civilian wounded in the attack.

“We are continuing our efforts with the Iraqi authorities and local authorities to quickly find the perpetrators of the attack,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. Ibrahim Kalin, spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said on Twitter that efforts were underway to catch the assailants.

“The necessary response will be given to those who carried out this treacherous attack,” he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting.

Asked whether the attack could be the work of the PKK, Cavusoglu said it was not yet clear if the shooting was a terror attack by the group, saying Iraqis at the restaurant were also targeted.

“We are continuing our contacts so that details concerning the issue of the apprehension of the assailants, and what is behind the attack, are brought to light,” Cavusoglu said.

The attack came days after Turkey’s Defense Ministry announced it launched a new military operation against Kurdish militants in northern Iraq. In a statement issued Saturday, the ministry announced the start of “Operation Claw-2″ aiming to destroy caves and shelters used by members of the PKK in the Hakurk region. It said the operation began late Friday with commandos, air strikes and artillery.

On Wednesday, Turkey launched airstrikes that killed at least seven members of the PKK.

The PKK has been waging an insurgency for more than three decades, and its fighters have bases in northern Iraq, near the border with Iran. Turkey has regularly bombed the mountainous area where the PKK are based and in March targeted a meeting of senior PKK leadership there, wounding a senior commander and killing three others.

Ankara accuses the PKK of launching assaults into Turkey from the Kurdistan region and has kept bases in Iraq and targeted the militants stronghold for decades, an agreement it had reached with the previous Iraqi regime under Saddam Hussein where the two countries agreed to use each other’s territories to safeguard their borders.”

  32. The Gulf States and the New Silk Road

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The rise of the People’s Republic of China over the past two decades has significantly changed the global economy. This development represents an opportunity for the Gulf States as they seek to diversify their economies, increase trade, and locate investment opportunities in emerging markets. By promoting China’s Belt and Road Initiative, they can boost their own national development plans through access to Beijing’s favorable business conditions, expertise, and experience.

The relative decline of US hegemony and power in the Persian Gulf and the emergence of China, which seeks a significant role in the region, are altering regional perceptions of the balance of power. The Gulf States have accordingly begun to seek ways to bolster their ties with Beijing, as well as with other powers, to strengthen their positions in an increasingly vulnerable geopolitical environment. These states are determined to preserve their strategic alliance with the US but are also seeking to hedge against threats that are emanating from regional crises and power competitions.

China’s most significant 21st century diplomatic and economic enterprise is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) – the flagship foreign policy effort of President Xi Jinping. It is comprised of two components: the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the 21st century Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI). The former links Beijing with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe on land, while the latter unites the major maritime trade routes of Africa, Europe, and Oceania as well as South and Southeast Asia.

  33. City of Rats – Environmentalists Cause 60% Rat Spike in LA
    July 17, 2019
    Daniel Greenfield

    Los Angeles.

If it’s not the bums, it’s the typhus. Or the taxes. Or the rats and the environmentalists.

They’re actually interconnected in the vicious cycle that is lefty policymaking. Here’s more.

Pest control and public health experts are calling on California Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a public health emergency over what they say is a sharp rise in the state’s rodent population.

Gov. Newsom would first have to explore ways to get the rats to vote Democrat and be counted in the census.

Over the past six months, there have been numerous, shocking accounts of city workers being bitten by rodents, police officers diagnosed with Typhus, and even a rat falling from the ceiling of a restaurant onto the menu of a patron.

If they requested straws, then Governor Newsom might agree to kill them.

Prominent radical left-wing Democrat lawmakers are refusing to condemn an Antifa terrorist’s attempted firebombing of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Tacoma, Washington, over the weekend.

Many Democrats have been demanding the abolition of ICE for the past year and in recent months they have begun comparing ICE agents to Nazis.

Now the four first-term small-c communist Democrat congresswomen who have come to be known collectively as “The Squad” for their strident over-the-top attacks on Republicans and for their aggressive opposition to the House Democrat leadership, especially Speaker Nancy Pelosi are remaining silent about the terrorist attack.

The four lawmakers – Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts – who like Antifa reflexively label people they don’t like “racist,” have become the guiding lights of their party dragging it ever leftward, and likely into electoral oblivion.

At Townhall, Katie Pavlich documented how Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, and Pressley refused to condemn the attacks when approached by reporters.

Omar refused to comment. Previously she has made light of the 9/11 attacks and praised al-Qaeda.

  35. GOP Senator Blasts ‘The Squad’: ‘They’re The Reason There Are Directions On A Shampoo Bottle’Sen. John Kennedy is funny. Really funny.

On Tuesday, the Louisiana Republican appeared on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight to talk about the war between President Trump and what is now being called “The Squad” — Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

“I’m not sure the president should exchange playground insults with them. When you try to argue with a fool, that proves there are two. But the president decided to do so,” Kennedy said. “The simple fact of the matter is that the four congresswomen think that America was wicked in its origins, they think that America and its people are even more wicked now, that we are all racist and misogynistic and evil.”

    Then Kennedy got rolling.

“They are entitled to their opinion. They are Americans. But I’m entitled to my opinion, and I just think they are left-wing cranks and they are the reason that there are directions on a shampoo bottle,” Kennedy said. “I think we should ignore them.”

Trump ignited a firestorm over the weekend with several posts on Twitter. “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump tweeted Saturday.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!” the president tweeted.
