This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

Mali: 23 dead in attacks on Fulani communities (DW, Jul 1, 2019)

“Armed attacks on Fulani communities in central Mali have left 23 dead. The rivalry between Fulani herders and Dogon farmers has escalated in recent years with the rising presence of armed Islamist groups.
At least 23 civilians were killed in central Mali after armed men attacked three Fulani communities, a local mayor and security forces said Monday.
Reuters news agency also reported that some 300 people were missing following the attacks.
“During Sunday, and overnight, in the villages of Bidi, Sankoro and Saran, armed men attacked civilians, killing 23 of them,” Cheick Harouna Sankare, mayor of the neighboring town of Ouenkoro.
After raiding the village of Saran, the attackers went on to Bidi, but people had already fled, said Harouna Sankare, who blamed the attack on Dogon hunters.
“Since they didn’t find anybody [in Bidi], they burned the village and the houses and attacked the cattle,” he said.
The attacks come following a wave of deadly assaults between Fulani herders and Dogon farmers who have long fought over land and resources.
The rivalry has escalated in recent years due to the growing presence of armed Islamist groups.
Failure to disarm militants
President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s government has promised to disarm the militias but has so far struggled to do so.
Tit-for-tat violence between the rival communities has increased this year. In March, suspected Dogon militiamen killed more than 150 Fulani in central Mali in one of the most violent attacks in the country’s recent history. Raids on Dogon villages in June killed over 40 people.
In other parts of central Mali, 12 civilians including a baby were killed on Sunday when the vehicle they were traveling in struck a landmine. Local mayor Issiaka Ganame told Reuters news agency that none of the passengers survived.
It was not clear who laid the mine, but jihadist groups have been known to deploy this kind of ordnance in the region.”

Ocasio-Cortez Says Border Agents Have Been ‘Sexually Threatening Towards Me’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez never met a camera she didn’t like. And she doesn’t bother spending any time in her district, helping her constituents, either.
So, of course, on Monday, AOC — seeing a chance to cash in politically with a crisis — headed to the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, to view a housing center for foreigners who have tried to sneak into America or have claimed political asylum.
She wanted everyone to know, so she took to social media to make a slew of claims, none of them substantiated, including one against agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agency.
“I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me. Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets. This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress,” she wrote Monday on Twitter.

How Iran-backed drone attacks on Saudi Arabia from Iraq would transform whole Middle East as a battle space

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that, according to U.S. officials, a drone-bomb attack on a Saudi oil pumping station on 14 May 2019 was launched not by Houthi fighters in Yemen but by Iran-backed Shia paramilitary forces (“militias”) in Iraq.
The attack, in other words, came from a direction different from the one originally posited. The U.S. officials cited in the report said also that the attack used assets different from the ones used previously by the Houthis. The officials apparently didn’t go into detail on this, but it’s likely that they fingered the Iran-backed militias in Iraq because the signature of the strike was similar to the assets Iran has been using to probe Israel’s defenses in the north.
The drone-bomb, in particular, may well have looked like the drone-bomb Israel downed back in February 2018, which approached Israeli air space from Syria and had originated from a compound south of Damascus controlled by Iran.
I call it a drone-bomb, incidentally, because it’s not an “armed drone” in the sense that it releases a missile or bomb of some kind and then departs. The drone itself is the delivery mechanism for the warhead. The reporting on the 14 May attack in Saudi Arabia has indicated that that’s what we’re talking about. The attempt against Israel involved the same apparatus: a drone-bomb.

Turning point: Iran’s influence in Iraq tipping to dominance

The New York Times had a funny headline for a funny article on Wednesday. The humor lies in the fact that a Trump policy, undertaken for multiple reasons – not all of which NYT approves – is producing an outcome NYT favors.
NYT favors enabling Iran. But Trump doing it poses editorial challenges. So the editors managed to squeeze out a slight jab at Trump, while keeping it muted and recounting events with a carefully straight face. Just another eyebrow-raising development in a time of quizzical grimaces.
Trump is enabling Iran to take effective ownership of Iraq, by overtly standing aside and letting Iran broker and direct a forced retreat of the Kurds in northern Iraq. It is useless to pretend this isn’t happening, when Qods Force commander Qassem Soleimani was in the Kirkuk region when the “battle” for Kirkuk started on Sunday 15 October, and reportedly brokered a deal with the PUK Kurdish faction to retreat from Kirkuk, while Soleimani’s sidekick combat leaders and Iranian-backed militia units were moving in on Kurdish positions. As with the campaign to drive ISIS from Iraq (Tikrit, Ramadi, Fallujah, Mosul), the central government in Baghdad continues to be decisively indebted to Iran for dislodging “insurgents” – the Kurds, in this case – from areas of Iraqi territory.

Richard: Well we now know what Kerry and Obama were advising the Iranians to do. The Iranians are pushing to get the US to make large scale kinetic strikes that will give the Iranians an excuse to increase the level of violence. The problem they face is that if the level of violence is increase there is a very good chance that Trump will do what he said he would and take out the entire Iranian military.
Will this action open us up terror attacks from various Hezbollah groups, well duh but we are at risk for terror attacks from the same groups if we do nothing. We are at a point where we have to decide which is the right thing to do for the future generations. Are we going to back down and let Islam take over more of the world and destroy even more of our culture or are we going to prove we are the same type of people as our ancestors and fight for our freedom, our nations, our culture and our right to believe in any religion we want.

The Secret Homework Cheating Machine Chinese Kids Are Using?
This is hilarious! Despite my decades of studying Asian culture, I have never pretended to know much about the ideographic calligraphy (beyond its artistic and stylistic embellishments).
My previous perceptions were that particular strokes, such as the vertical “reed” and so forth gave words assured tonal aspects. Having watched enough Chinese-language films and programs, I now understand that regional dialects play hob with even slightly similar sounding words (as the young lady notes), but especially with homophones, which already are a plague upon the language.
WITH THIS LARGER view of the Chinese learning process, it is my pleasure to announce that the Chicoms are well and truly screwed. My Cosmic Trowel of Irony is making a regular din about how a country that is addicted to outright intellectual property theft finds itself saddled with a primary learning process (i.e., mastering language and writing) that is almost entirely redundant on NON-INNOVATIVE THINKING.
The narrator freely admits what a powerful but potentially damaging tool memorization can be. More often, however, only inventors honestly understand the monstrous deficit represented by steeping a childhood mind in rigorous, repetitive, and not-immediately-rewarding tedium.
The long-term presence of computers in the West has largely eliminated a person’s handwriting as some sort of index or measure of their character. This is definitely not so in the Middle Kingdom. Little has probably changed with respect to how an individual’s calligraphy directly reflects a substantial degree of their outward persona.
Taken in combination, there wafts across the Sino-American battlefield a binary nerve gas with soy sauce top notes. From all indications, a huge portion of the PRC’s so-called “technological advances” are merely knockoff and copycat products.
IF THE CHICOMS ARE TOO LAZY TO INNOVATE NOW, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY ALL FORGET HOW TO WRITE?
It’s not so much the writing but the loss of motivation involved. If these little commie-bots are side-stepping basic literacy measures (and Chinese fluency only comes through the door of insanely tedious rote memorization), then how will they ever reach the end goal of innovation which requires Olympian levels of diligence to attain?
Ignoring (as if that’s even possible) all of Communist China’s pollution and corruption … Just the genetic-level unraveling of their people is enough to doom the entire culture. Add together:
OFOC, the one family one child policy, has nigh-well permanently imbalanced all gender distribution in the Chinese gene pool. Much like their northwestern deforestation, it will take a thousand years to reverse the damage that’s already been done, and only if it halts right away. This in utero disfigurement is something that the recent second child concession (only for married couples, mind you) is wholly inadequate incapable of reversing.
THE LITTLE EMPEROR SYNDROME of only boy-children becoming gluttonous, obese, spoiled brats (some of whose asses are still being wiped at age ten). Let’s see how prone they are to dropping the X-Box and practicing their brush strokes for an hour or two.
THE GOOGLE EFFECT is but one small facet of the anti-intellectual influences washing over Chinese culture at present. Television (a more recent household presence over there), pop music (of the Gangnam model), and the entire fad culture of entertainment all add up to decreased attention spans.
ADD INSTITUTIONALIZED discouragement of critical or analytical thought in favor of parroting ideological orthodoxy, and there emerges a Chinese water torture being drip fed into the spiral helix of their very DNA.
Communist China’s only hope is to abandon ideographic Chinese. Like bamboo, so deeply rooted is their calligraphic writing that converting to English would render their culture alien unto itself. Ergo, the Mainland’s own cultural chauvinism assures that it will cling to this educational boat anchor right down to the sea bed.
Another reason for the Chicoms to worry about how long they will be able to hold on to power. The CCP has created the perfect storm that will bring down their house of cards and possibly split China into several smaller nations.
