Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We must use it while we can.

  1. Libya ‘war crimes’ videos shared on social media (bbc, video, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-africa-48105968/libya-war-crimes-videos-shared-on-social-media

“An investigation by BBC Arabic has found evidence of alleged war crimes in Libya being widely shared on Facebook and YouTube.

The BBC found images and videos on social media of the bodies of fighters and civilians being desecrated by fighters from the self-styled Libyan National Army.

The force, led by strongman General Khalifa Haftar, controls a swathe of territory in the east of Libya and is trying to seize the capital, Tripoli.

Under international law the desecration of bodies and posting the images online for propaganda is a war crime.

The Foreign Office says it takes the allegations extremely seriously and is concerned about the impact the recent violence is having on the civilian population…”

  2. Australian guilty of plane bomb plot involving meat grinder (BBC, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-48116998

“A man has been convicted in Australia of plotting to blow up a flight on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) group using a bomb hidden inside a meat grinder.

Khaled Khayat, 51, conspired to bring down the Etihad flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi in July 2017, a jury has ruled. He had pleaded not guilty.

The plot was aborted when a bag holding the bomb was too heavy to be checked in at Sydney Airport, local media said.

He can be sentenced to life in prison.

The plan was to blow up the flight carrying 400 passengers with military grade explosives concealed in the grinder.

Police had accused Khayat, and his brother, Mahmoud, of also planning a chemical gas attack in Sydney.

“The jury this afternoon returned a guilty verdict for Khaled and is still deliberating in respect of Mahmoud,” a spokeswoman for the New South Wales Supreme Court was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

Khayat’s lawyer, Richard Pontella, argued that his client had in fact been trying to prevent a terrorist attack.

But a jury rejected his argument after three days of deliberations.

Police said the explosives used to make the bomb had been sent by air from Turkey as part of a plot “inspired and directed” by IS.

Khayat will be sentenced on 26 July.”

I don’t know what shocked me more – what the lawyer describes, or the fact that he asked me not to mention his name and place of residence: “I’m sure that the Bar of Lawyers would directly associate me with the far-right scene. And that could jeopardize my economic existence.”

Here are excerpts from the lawyer’s letter:

It was on the 8th of August 2018, this was supposed to be the long-awaited and more than deserved holiday start for my partner, my son (then 7 years old) and me. The flight to Tenerife was carried out by TUI-Fly and took off with a little delay from Hanover.Even if it is a bit unpleasant, I took a seat with a queasy feeling, because a small (Arabic) family sat directly behind us. Wife, toddler (maybe 4 years old) and the man. Unpleasant, not because of the fear of terror, but because the man was already heard loudly when entering the machine. And so it happened that this gentleman then conducted long monologues with his wife and child endlessly without stopping. But I was able to ignore that. It was only a short flight compared to the otherwise rather long flights to the Asian region. What could not be ignored was the toddler, who was always bored and kicked against the seat of my (then pregnant!) partner. And 2 hours before the landing she could not stand it any longer. She turned around and obviously committed a mortal sin. She looked at the toddler and then at the father – with a questioning glance. This should actually be enough for the parent or guardian in a civilised society to take the appropriate measures to educate his child and at least to talk him out of such behaviour. The three of us will never forget what followed. The man leaned over to us and said very loudly in good German: “Sorry, but don’t look at my child. Never with your eyes. God gave us a language in His wisdom. When you look at my child, you destroy the soul.So always use the language.”I replied that he should please use his language to educate his child. The constant kicking against the seat is simply not acceptable, especially as my partner is pregnant. (in the 7. month thus visibly). Then the man stood up and shouted! at us how we could dare to talk to him. He could not emphasize loudly enough that God gave us this peaceful world and that we only want to cause discord. He then spat on my partner’s head and shouted that we had lost the right to live in this beautiful world of God. You can imagine that not only I, but especially my son was more than shocked. After he insulted me and my family as Nazis ( also the passengers from the front rows who complained to the gentleman about his loudness ) the busy flight attendants finally rushed to our aid. I believed. They only pointed out to the gentleman that he should please take a seat and calm down. Then he shouted at the flight attendants that they were discriminating against him and were also Nazis. We haven’t said anything in all that time. Then we were told by the flight attendants that we should have some understanding after all. What we should have understanding for has not yet been answered.Since I felt very threatened, I demanded from the flight attendant that the captain inform the local police about the incident, as I wanted to file a complaint. This wish was, of course, ignored! But the small family from behind, now even louder, got a free dinner upgrade as an excuse, for the discrimination suffered I suppose.
At the end of the flight very devoted and worried people came to hug the gentleman behind us! and to apologize for our misconduct.

  5. France Thwarts Five Islamist Terror Attacks in 2019 So Far (breitbart, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/05/01/france-thwarts-five-islamist-terror-attacks-2019-so-far/

“Following the arrest of four radical Islamic extremists on Friday, French authorities have now halted five radical Islamic terror attacks in the first four months of 2019.

The four individuals arrested remain in custody and are said to have been plotting to murder French police officers. One of the group, who is under the age of 18, was previously sentenced for trying to join the Islamic State in Syria, France Soir reports.

Investigators say that the four men had already drawn up plans for the attacks and had wanted them to coincide with the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan which begins next month.

The plot joins four more that have been halted by French police this year, such as one that was stopped in March after the arrest of two 20-year-old men who were believed to have been plotting to attack a kindergarten, take some of the children and staff hostage, and then attack police officers who arrived on the scene.

In mid-April, a 16-year-old was arrested on terrorist offences after investigators visited his home and found “tutorials detailing methods of terrorist action” along with pro-jihadist videos and searches for officials in the country’s domestic intelligence service, the DGSI.

The number of plots for 2019 could surpass the number of cases last year, which in October were said to number five, according to French interior minister Christophe Castaner.

While the plots uncovered this year mostly focus on the targeting of police and others, much larger and ambitious plots have been described by Islamic State detainee Jonathan Geffroy.

Last year, Geffroy claimed that the two most senior French Islamic State members, the Clain brothers, had plotted to not only commit mass shootings but to also cause an environmental catastrophe by attacking a nuclear power plant.

Since Geffroy’s testimony, both Fabien and his brother Jean-Michel have been killed in the Middle East.”

  6. Sweden: No Deportation for Migrant Who Sexually Assaulted 11 Women in Two Weeks (breitbart, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/05/01/deportation-rejected-migrant-who-sexually-attacked-11-women-two-weeks/

“Swedish authorities have declined to deport a migrant who sexually assaulted 11 women in less than two weeks.

The man, named as Said Rendi, carried out the attacks between January 28th and February 11th in the city of Uppsala, and is said to have jumped the women from behind and then fled the area while wearing a surgical mask to hide his identity, Nyheter Idag reports.

Mr Rendi was eventually arrested because the car he used is owned by the municipal government, which he uses it to look after a young autistic boy who was with him at the time of his arrest. The car’s GPS coordinates are tracked by the local government and they linked him to all 11 attacks, according to prosecutors.

Nine of the incidents were considered sexual assault while two were considered more serious, with one involving Rendi attempting to push his finger into the anus of one of the victims.

Rendi was convicted by the court but only sentenced to a suspended sentence, 60 hours of community service, and a fine to be paid to the victims, despite attempts by the prosecutor to classify the two more serious incidents as attempted rape. The court also denied requests to deport him.

Prosecutor Pontus Melander said he will likely appeal the ruling as he said he felt the crimes were not classified correctly.

The migration-background origin of the attacker in the case matches the statistics released by Swedish broadcaster SVT last year, which indicated that up to 85 per cent of rapes committed by people unknown to the victim were by individuals from a migration background.

Earlier this year, the Swedish government announced it would be publishing a new official study on the relationship between migration and crime — the first since 2005.”

  7. Syrian Migrant Injures Four German Police Officers in Rampage (breitbart, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/05/01/syrian-migrant-injures-four-german-police-officers-rampage/

“A 22-year-old Syrian asylum seeker was arrested in the German city of Augsburg for injuring four police officers after they attempted to identify him in a routine check.

The Syrian was initially stopped by German Federal Police just outside the main train station in Augsburg in what started as an initial routine identification stop, but quickly escalated out of control when the man began attacking the officers, who had confronted him after the found he was wanted for 450 euros’ worth of property damage, Presse Augsburg reports.

Initially, only two officers were attacked but as the migrant continued with his assault another two officers joined their colleagues to subdue him. The officers suffered injuries to their faces, arms, legs, and torsos but none were injured to the extent that they required hospitalisation, and continued their duties after the arrest took place.

The attack is not the first by a migrant on police officers in Germany. Last year, an incident caught on video revealed a group of around 20 migrants attacking officers in Göttingen in Lower Saxony after they attempted to relocate a 20-year-old Liberian asylum seeker.

Earlier in the year, a Nigerian migrant attempted to use an officer’s firearm against them after being arrested, but was wrestled to the ground before being able to fire the weapon.

Violent attacks on emergency services workers have lately become more frequent in the German capital in general, according to a new report, which stated that in 2018 alone there were 240 violent attacks. The most recent attack saw a group of 20 individuals gang up on paramedics and surround their ambulance while throwing beer bottles at them outside of a nightclub.

Germany has not been the only country where migrants have attacked police and other emergency services. Just last week in Italy, a man from Senegal wounded two officers, causing one of them severe head trauma, after attacking them with an iron bar while yelling “Allah hu Akbar”.”

  9. Jaish-e-Mohammed founder listed as global terrorist (thedeilystar, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.thedailystar.net/world/south-asia/news/jem-chief-listed-global-terrorist-1737535

“Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed founder Masood Azhar was today listed as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council, in a major diplomatic victory for India after China withdrew its objections.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin tweeted that “Big, small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list Grateful to all for their support.”

The UNSC decision means Azhar’s finances and assets will be frozen, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

JeM was behind the February 12 terror attack which killed 40 Indian paramilitary personnel in Pulwama and Azhar is the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008 which left 166 people dead.

China, which had blocked Masood Azhar’s listing as global terrorist four times in the past, finally dropped its objections today. Along with India, the US, Britain and France prodded China to change its stand.

An indication of China’s changed stance was available yesterday when it had said that the issue of designating Azhar as a global terrorist by the UNSC will be “properly resolved.”

Azhar was freed by India in return for safe release of passengers of a hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814 from Kathmandu to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 1999 and has since directed several attacks by the Jaish-e-Mohammad including an assault on the Parliament in 2001 in coordination with another terror outfit Lashar-e-Toiba.”

  14. PAKISTAN –Jobs in Romania: Over 500,000 workers from Pakistan needed, says Zulfi Bukhari

ISLAMABAD: Nicolae Goia, Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, called on Zulfikar Bukhari, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, to discuss issues of mutual interests.

Both the dignitaries discussed the export of manpower to Romania and agreed upon deriving out a mechanism for safe and secure migration of Pakistani workers to Romania.

Romanian Ambassador apprised SAPM of the recent developments that have taken place in Romania and the scenario that is going to shape up post-Brexit.

The Ambassador said that Romania is in dire need of the workforce and said that Romania can import as many as one million skilled and unskilled workers will be required by Romania by the next year.

The shortage of manpower in Romania has resulted from the flight of local workforce to western European States.

The Ambassador laid down the details of the labor market of his country and informed the Special Assistant that Romania needs at least 40,000 drivers and the country is ready to accommodate maximum numbers from Pakistan.

In addition to that, doctors, engineers, construction workers and I.T specialists will be required. The current demand in Romania presents an unprecedented opportunity for Pakistan, he added.

Zulfikar Bukhari said that we are working with Germany to export the most skilled workforce as per the 2020 vision of the country.

Earlier this year, Germany vowed to take in experts in robotics and quantum mechanics and other skilled workers from Pakistan.

Bukhari said that we are focusing our attention towards skills development in Pakistani labor. International Donor Agencies are onboard to invest in vocational training institutes.

The demands of the global labor market are being taken into account to equip the workforce with modern technological expertise, he added.

Bukhari said that despite the fact that an unprecedented opportunity is being presented to Pakistan, we still need to work on the legal framework which will ensure the safe and legally protected migration of Pakistani workers.

Both the dignitaries agreed to work out a plan by making a working group consisting of officials of the Romanian Mission and the Overseas Ministry to derive out a mechanism that eliminates workers exploitation in the host country.

Bukhari also emphasized the need to adjust drivers coming back from gulf countries in Romanian market.

The Ambassador agreed to adjust as many drivers as possible as soon as official demand is forwarded by the Romanian Mission and the mechanism is worked out.

  15. Orchestration: NYT, WaPo, a Mueller letter, and 11 House Dems promptly calling for IG probe of Barr
    By J.E. Dyer May 1, 2019

At this point, it seems there are probably three groups in America. There’s one group that participates in orchestrated theme roll-outs like the one we saw on Tuesday.

There’s a second group that recognizes these developments as orchestrated theme roll-outs.

And there’s a third group – no doubt the largest one by far – that pays no attention to the orchestrated theme roll-outs, and for the most part doesn’t know they’ve happened.

The theme roll-out went like this. The New York Times reported Tuesday morning that Robert Mueller sent Attorney General William Barr a letter in late March “objecting to his [Barr’s] early description of the Russia investigation’s conclusions that appeared to clear President Trump on possible obstruction of justice.” (The “early description” was part of Barr’s 4-page letter to Congress highlighting the conclusions of the Mueller report, sent on 24 March.)

    • The libs aren’t going to let go of their attempt to drive PT from office, the report says that there was no evidence of collusion of obstruction of justice. Mueller says that Barrs letter is accurate.

  16. AUSTRALIA – Former newspaper journalist allegedly sent threats to Canberra church

A former newspaper journalist has been arrested after allegedly threatening to attack a Canberra church.

James Michael Waugh, 28, allegedly posted a violent threat on the Facebook page of the Canberra House of Prayer in Yarralumla in late March.

“I’m going to kill every single one of you dog polytheist c—-,”

    the post reads.

He was arrested by ACT Police in the Canberra suburb of Griffith on Tuesday afternoon after a call was made to the national security hotline.

When police arrested Waugh, they allegedly found a one-metre long sword at his house.

Documents filed to court read that Waugh allegedly stated he wanted weapons that “suited his skillset” and was “not proficient in firearms”.

Waugh formerly worked for the Queanbeyan Age, a regional NSW newspaper now owned by Nine.

He left the Queanbeyan Age in the last six months for another job, but he has been unemployed for at least a month.

He has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, possession of an object with intention to kill another person and threatening to act with intent to cause public harm.

Waugh was taken for a mental health assessment but a doctor concluded he had no mental health concerns.

He was refused bail and will return to court on April 26.

Former journalist wanted to ‘lure’ and kill Christians in reprisal for Christchurch massacre, court hears

A former Canberra-based reporter wanted to “lure” Christians to his house and fight them as part of a reprisal for the Christchurch massacre, a court has heard.

James Michael Waugh, 28, was arrested earlier this month and charged with threatening to act with intent to cause public harm, using a carriage service to menace others and possessing a weapon to be used to kill.

The former Queanbeyan Age journalist applied for bail in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, and was refused.

During the application, prosecutor Rae-ann Khazma told the court more information had come to light since Mr Waugh’s arrest.

Ms Khazma said Mr Waugh had spoken to a doctor, while in custody, and told them of his intention of “luring in potential victims to his house” as reprisal for the massacres in Christchurch.

“He made it clear he would either engage in battle … making him a martyror to make them look bad,” she said.

She said Mr Waugh had no mental health illness to explain his behaviour, and that he had told a doctor that he did not recognise the Australian Government and that Australian laws did not apply to him.

Ms Khazma said Mr Waugh intended to leave the ACT to prepare for the “day of judgement” by going to remote central Queensland with his brother.

She said examination of his computer showed previous searches for areas in Queensland and central Australia.

Ms Khazma said that, based on this information, he could not be trusted to be given bail and meet his conditions to stay within the ACT.

But Mr Waugh’s lawyer Helen Hayunga said he should be granted bail, as there was no evidence that he would act on his threats.

“It is one thing to espouse bizarre or intemperate views and another to act upon them,” she said.

“The difficulty for the prosecution … is that there is no evidence he was going to act [on his threats].”

“Beyond the acquisition of the weapon,” Magistrate Peter Morrison interjected.

Ms Hayunga said there was no evidence he was in contact with criminals, no evidence he had lured someone to his house, and police had seized his phone and computer.

“He will have, necessarily, more limited access to the internet [if released],” she said.

Mr Waugh was remanded in custody until his next court date later this month.

Ex-Journalist Plotted to Behead Christians as “Reprisal” For Christchurch Massacre – Court

Planned to lure victims, behead them with Pakistani sword

A former journalist is being held without bail after he announced plans to lure “coward dog” Christians to his home and behead them with a Pakistani sword in retaliation for the Christchurch mosque massacre, an Australian court has heard.

James Michael Waugh, 28, has been charged with threatening to act with intent to cause public harm, using a telecommunications service to menace others and possessing a weapon to be used to kill, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“I have issued threats, along with my name and address, to every coward dog church in Canberra,” Waugh allegedly said in a Facebook Messenger group chat. “If you know someone with balls send them along. I’ve bought a scimitar and intend to cut their heads off in my front yard as a reprisal.”

“I’m going to kill every single one of you dog polytheist c***s,” Waugh also allegedly said in a post on the Canberra House of Prayer Facebook page.

Police say Waugh told them he had purchased the scimitar, measuring over three feet in length, IN PAKISTAN.

A bail request was denied after Waugh told a doctor and prosecutorhe intended to continue with his plan if released by going to a “remote central Queensland [location] with his brother” to prepare for a “day of judgement” and violent confrontation with Christians.

“He made it clear he would either engage in battle… making him a martyr, or to make them look bad,” prosecutor Rae-ann Khazma told the court. “He also indicated his use of a scimitar depending on how many Christians turned up and whether they were armed.”

Khazma revealed that Waugh has stated he does not recognize the Australian government as legitimate and that Australian laws do not apply to him.

Waugh’s doctor determined that he does not suffer from any mental health issues.

  17. Iran Takes Steam Out of US Sanctions, Boosts Gas Sales to Neighbours (sputniknews, May 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201905011074620009-iran-gas-export-plans/

“Earlier, Washington indicated that it would not renew the exemptions granted to eight major importers to its tough sanctions on Iranian crude oil exports once they expire later this week, with economists fearing the restrictions may impact the global energy market.

Iran is building up its gas refinery and transmission infrastructure to significantly expand its gas exports to countries such as Iraq and Turkey, National Iranian Gas Company CEO Hassan Montazer Torbati has said.

“Last year, we exported gas to Turkey, Baghdad and Basra with an average of over 40 million cubic meters a day, and this year, gas exports to Iraq will reach more than 35 million cubic meters per day,” Torbati said, speaking to reporters at an energy conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

According to the official, Iran, which has the second-largest proven natural gas reserves in the world, will increase its gas refinery and transmission capacity to over a billion cubic metres a day by February 2020.

Bijan Namdar Zangeneh, Iran’s petroleum minister, said that the country would bring 18 new petrochemical plants online over the next two years, raising the Islamic Republic’s total export capacity to 50 million tonnes, or the equivalent of some $36 billion in revenue per year.

“We will continue to focus on investing in South Pars and plan to increase gas production by 60 million cubic meters before the coming winter,” Zangeneh noted.

The South Pars gas field is the largest gas field in the world, accounting for nearly half of Iran’s total gas reserves. China’s CNPCI and Iran’s Petropars entered a cooperation deal on the development of Phase 11 of the Pars field in 2017, with France’s Total also participating in the project before pulling out over fears of US sanctions, with the Chinese energy giant later buying France’s shares.

In January, Iran’s Plan & Budget Organisation reported that the country had increased gas exports from 25 million cubic meters to 36.24 million cubic meters per day since March 2018, with 11 billion cubic meters per day sold to Turkey, making its way to the country along the Tabriz-Ankara pipeline. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently promised to continue buying natural gas from Iran, notwithstanding US sanctions pressure.

Iraq, another US regional partner, relies on Iranian natural gas for as much as 45 per cent of its electricity generation needs, according to PressTV, with Iran transmitting another 1,000 megawatts to the country directly in an electricity transmission deal.

In addition to Turkey and Iraq, Iran has been looking to increase gas exports to countries in the Caucasus region, including Armenia and energy-rich Azerbaijan.

The Trump administration slapped Iran with a series of increasingly harsh financial and energy sanctions in May 2018, after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal. These included tough energy restrictions aimed at bringing Iran’s oil exports down “to zero” in a bid to cripple the country’s economy. China has rejected US pressure and promised to continue imports, with other countries, including Turkey, India and South Korea urging the US to reconsider its stance and renew the exemptions.

Tehran has warned that any direct US efforts to stop its oil exports could lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway through which about 20 per cent of the world’s total oil supplies pass.

The US Treasury Department exempted eight major Iranian crude oil exporters, including China, India, South Korea, Japan, Turkey, Greece and Italy, as well as Taiwan from US sanctions, with the waivers set to expire on 2 May.”

    https://sputniknews.com/asia/201905011074615884-pak-soldiers-killed-militant-strike-afghanistan/

“At least 60-70 terrorists attacked Pakistani security forces guarding the Pakistan-Afghan border in North Waziristan; the strike was retaliated effectively, the Pakistani military stated.

New Delhi (Sputnik): A day after Pakistan’s military issued a warning to the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), at least three Pakistani soldiers were killed and seven others wounded in a cross-border terrorist strike from Afghanistan.

Three soldiers “embraced martyrdom” while seven others were injured in the attack, the Pakistani military’s PR outlet Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said, adding that several terrorists had been killed in retaliatory fire by the army.

“While Pakistan security forces are solidifying border security through fencing and the construction of forts to deny liberty of action to the terrorists, Afghan Security Forces and the authorities need to have more effective control in [the] border region to support Pakistan’s efforts as well as deny use of Afghan soil against Pakistan,” ISPR said.

Pakistan’s fencing efforts will continue despite “all such impediments”, it added.
The terror attack occurred a day after the Pakistani military’s media chief Major General Asif Ghafoor warned the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leadership that the military won’t tolerate the group anymore if it continued expressing their grievances through illegal activity including the use of violence.

After the warning, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in a radio programme, defended PTM, criticising the Pakistan military for threatening the tribal organisation.

Pakistan’s military has waged a massive war against TTP since 2007 in the war-torn tribal districts where PTM is now gaining prominence with the support of thousands of Pashtuns.”

  19. Nearly 100 Migrants Rescued in Libya Trying to Reach Europe Illegally – Navy (sputniknews, May 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201905011074624398-libya-migrants-europe-rescue/

“All rescued migrants were male, with the majority of them being citizens of Bangladesh and Sudan. There were also people from Algeria, Ethiopia, Libya, Morocco, Niger, and Tunisia aboard the boat.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — The Libyan Coast Guard has rescued 96 migrants who were trying to reach Europe illegally, the Libyan Navy, which is controlled by the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord, said in a statement on Wednesday.

“A central district coast guard patrol found 96 migrants aboard an old rubber boat on April 30…Migrants were taken to Khoms… After medical and humanitarian aid was provided to them, they were handed over to the office for irregular migration and placed in a [migrant] reception facility,”the statement said.

Libya is one of the main transit countries for migrants. According to the UN Refugee Agency, the majority of migrants, who cross the Mediterranean to Europe depart from Libya.

Meanwhile, the political situation in Libya has remained in a critical state since 4 April, when Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the head of the Libyan National Army (LNA), ordered his troops to advance on Tripoli in a bid to drive what he said were terrorist forces out of the city.

Armed forces loyal to the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord responded by starting a military operation against the LNA.”

  20. Angela Merkel DEFENDS disastrous open-door migrant policy (express, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1121481/angela-merkel-germany-migrant-crisis-EU-refugees-germany

“ANGELA Merkel has again been forced to defend her disastrous migrant policy four years after more than 1.1 million refugees poured into her country.

Germans were initially supportive of their chancellor’s open-door welcome to people fleeing Middle Eastern war zones but the huge influx led to unprecedented social upheaval and eventually sparked a major political backlash from which Mrs Merkel never fully recovered. She suffered at the polls in elections in 2017 and struggled to pull together a coalition government before quitting as leader of her Christian Democratic Party and announcing she would stand down as chancellor at the next election.

But she insists the decisions were taken for the right reasons at the time.

Addressing supporters in Brandenburg, Mrs Merkel said civil war in Syria and the regime of the ISIS terrorist militia in the Middle East had created an exceptional situation to which Germany had to respond.

She said mistakes had been made earlier when European countries had failed to taken care of refugees crises in troubled states such as Lebanon or Jordan.

She said: “If a mistake was made in this context, then it was not a mistake to take in people.

“The mistake was not to see how people in refugee areas like Lebanon or Jordan are doing.

“That’s why our lesson is: provide local help.”

Mrs Merkel also acknowledged her failure to adjust living conditions in eastern and western Germany in the early years of her chancellorship.

She said: “I had thought maybe the federal states can do this on their own – but I have to say that they can not do it on their own.”

She said major issues of recent years such as the global financial crisis in 2008 and 2009 and the refugee crisis of 2015 had taken up a lot of political energy.

She told her audience “Of course, I did not have the time to deal with the equality of living conditions as much. My day only has 24 hours as well.””

    • Wogs are not our responsibility, they must take care of themselves,it is too easy to refuse responsibility for their own lives and lay the burden on the white man,so that these parasites can sit on their arses at our expense for the rest of their lives.

  21. ISIS WARNING: Angela Merkel warns jihadis STILL major threat after shock video emerges (express, May 1, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1121450/isis-islamic-state-video-germany-news-isis-leader-Abu-Bakr-al-Baghdadi

“ANGELA Merkel has warned ISIS terrorists still posed a threat in Europe after a video of the the jihadist militia’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi emerged.

The German Chancellor said ISIS had been largely defeated in the Middle East but had not completely disappeared. Mrs Merkel was speaking after holding talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in Berlin. She said: “No-one has assumed ISIS had disappeared and the video released on Monday shows this assessment is correct. We will have to deal with the question of how ISIS can finally be defeated for quite a while.”

Mr Mahdi also said the extremist group had received “painful blows” but had not completely disappeared and remained a large, “diversified” organisation that will try to carry out further atrocities such as those in Sri Lanka.

He said: “United efforts to defeat the remains of ISIS must continue.”

Al-Baghdadi appeared for the first time in five years in an ISIS propaganda video announcing a continuation of the fight against the West.

Mrs Merkel said she had assured Iraq that Germany would continue to help train its security forces and deepen development co-operation…”

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Hong Kong on Sunday to protest planned changes to the city’s extradition law. Many believe new rules facilitating the sending of suspects to China would effectively allow Beijing to grab people at will and thereby completely control the city. “You will be screwed,” said a marcher, a law clerk, to Reuters.

The turnout was high — organizers said 130,000 people took part — in part because the demonstration followed the sentencing of democracy activists for their role in the massive “Occupy Central” protests in 2014. On Wednesday, a lower court handed out prison terms of between eight to 16 months to four of the “Umbrella Nine.” Three others received suspended sentences. One person was given 200 hours of community service.

The eight individuals — the sentencing of a ninth person was postponed for medical reasons — were convicted of public nuisance offenses in a closely watched proceeding on April 9. The prosecution of the 9 figures was seen, both in Hong Kong and elsewhere, as a sign of Beijing tightening its control over the city.

“It’s indeed one of the darkest days in Hong Kong history,” Tak Ho Fong, host of “Peking Hotel” on Hong Kong-based digital radio station D100, told the Gatestone Institute in e-mail comments.

“The head of Russia’s Reconciliation Centre in Syria said on Wednesday that militant groups acting in the Idlib de-escalation zone haven’t ceased their attempts to attack Russia’s Hmeymim base and Syrian government troops.

Terrorists attempted to shell Hmeymim airbase using multiple-launch rocket systems as well as drones twelve times over the past month, Russian military said, adding that all the attacks were repelled and there was no no materiel damage as a result of the shellings.

The head of the Russian Centre for Syrian Reconciliation also said that twelve unmanned aerial vehicles had been downed by Russian defences…”

      • Russia’s Questionable S-400 Turkey Deal
Moscow must recognize that it has allowed Ankara to have more leverage in Syria.
        [Excerpts]
[W]hile Russia seemed to have outplayed the United States in the S-400 deal, that Russia may now be tied to Turkey in a way that reduces Moscow’s area of maneuver.…

In August 2016 the SDF liberated Manbij from the Islamic State and Turkey was alarmed. It launched an operation into northern Syria called Euphrates Shield both to check the SDF advance and to aid the Syrian rebels.

Meanwhile, Turkey and Russia began to work together on the TurkStream, a pipeline and energy initiative that will link Russia, Turkey and eastern Europe. Development began in Oct. 2016, with a permit from Turkey, and a phase of the initiative was completed in Nov. 2018.

Turkey, Russia and Iran…bonded over the Astana peace process, which began in earnest in Jan 2017. Initially the Astana discussions were merely designed to facilitate de-escalation in Syria, but soon after Turkey and Russia were working closely together.

The Syrian civil war was outsourced to Turkey, Russia and Iran, weakening the regime’s role. Turkey and Russia also saw eye to eye on reducing the U.S. influence in eastern Syria. Russia wanted the United States to withdraw so the regime could go into eastern Syria.

Turkey had already decided where its policy was going in Syria. In Jan. 2018 Ankara had made an agreement with Russia that enabled Turkey to go into Afrin unhindered by the Syrian air force.

Turkey attacked the Kurdish People’s Protection Units in Afrin in northwest Syria, accusing them of being PKK terrorists. Turkey then moved into Idlib, which is where it signed a Sept. 2018 agreement with Russia that would prevent a Syrian regime offensive.

As Turkey and Russia grow closer, the Syrian regime is wondering if Turkish forces will ever leave northern Syria. Turkey now controls Afrin, the areas of Euphrates Shield around Jarabulus and Idlib. In Idlib the Syrian regime says there are thousands of extremists and terrorist groups.

For Russia, TURKEY is now the PRIORITY. The Syrian regime needs Russia more than Moscow needs it. The Syrian regime doesn’t want to be swallowed up by Iran, so instead it has turned to Russia for balance, seeing it as a more reliable ally. Russia, meanwhile, doesn’t want tensions with Turkey to spoil the S-400 deal.

…The real elephant in the room is what happens if the S-400s arrive.… By selling Turkey its latest air-defense system Russia knows that Turkey can track Russian aircraft in Syria. Russia can only go forward with its decision to sell Turkey the system under the assumption that there can never be a clash with Turkey over northern Syria.

Once the deal goes through Turkey will not only have a sophisticated weapons system, but it will also leverage and a veto over operations in northern Syria.…

  26. Turkish Government Surveilled US Troops as Part of 2016 Coup Probe – Report (sputniknews, May 1, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/military/201905011074625221-turkish-government-surveilled-us-troops/

“The Turkish government secretly investigated and monitored US troops deployed in Turkey as part of the state’s larger investigation into the failed 2016 coup attempt, secret documents recently obtained by the Nordic Monitor reveal.

The “trove” of documents reviewed by the non-profit organization offers details on US military plans, drone operations, troop movements and anti-Daesh operations that American troops took part in.

The US Air Force’s 39th Mission Support Group (MSP), which operates out of the Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey, and the US Air Force’s 727th Expeditionary Air Control Squadron Det-7 teams were among the forces monitored by the Turkish government. A watchful eye was also kept on any and all operations involving the Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

“[Operations] were reviewed on the suspicion that they might have been involved in the failed coup,” reads Nordic Monitor’s report. “The secret probe helps feed into the Erdo?an government’s false narrative which claims that the US was the mastermind behind the abortive putsch although there has been no evidence presented to support that claim.”

The organization ultimately concluded that “none of the activity [recorded in the documents] appears to be unusual and in fact seems to be routine operations, ranging from construction and spare parts supply to maintaining drone surveillance flights.”

Investigators also noted that even though activities carried out by American forces “appear to be in line with agreements between Turkey and the United States… Turkish prosecutors concluded that documents which featured classified US troop movement and logistical operations were relevant to the coup investigation.”

The collection of intelligence data, according to Nordic Monitor officials, shows that prosecutors were “doing the bidding of the government instead of searching for the facts.”

Tensions between the US and Turkey have been at a boil for several months. Most recently, pressure began mounting following the arrest of American pastor Andrew Brunson over alleged links to the Gulenist movement, which has been widely blamed by the Turkish government for inciting the coup attempt. Brunson was eventually released in October 2018.

The US and Turkey are presently at odds over Ankara’s intention to purchase Russia’s S-400 missile defense system instead of the US-developed Patriot air and missile defense system. Washington has gone as far as threatening Ankara with sanctions if it continues to move forward with the S-400 deal. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the row led the US to put a hold on delivering equipment for the F-35 fighter jet to Turkey.”
