“Jewish teenagers from Germany are opting to study and possibly settle in Israel citing the hostile environment and growing anti-Semitism, in the country where they grew up, the German outlet Die Welt indicates.
Young Jews from Germany who are struggling to fit into society and seeking new perspectives are choosing to enroll in boarding schools in Israel as part of an educational programme called Naale, Die Welt states. The group’s name is short for “teenagers immigrate before their parents” in Hebrew.
The programme, led by the Israeli Ministry of Education and the Jewish Agency sees about 700 young Jews migrate to Israel each year, and the number is rising. Almost 50 young people from Germany came to Israel in 2018. The German outlet spoke to such teenagers, trying to explain what has motivated them to leave the country where they grew up. While 15 percent of graduates are drawn back to Germany and ten percent drop out of the programme altogether, three-quarters of them remain permanently in Israel. Some are even later joined by their families.
According to 46-year-old Evelyn Mende and her daughter Golda, who decided to participate in this programme, “there is no future for Jews” in Germany. She is going to study at the same school Liam Rückert from Berlin has been attending since last year when the 16-year-old’s story came into the nationwide spotlight. The teenager was reportedly threatened and bullied by classmates because of his Jewish background and opted for emigration with Naale to escape harassment.
Evelyn Mende says “I’m totally afraid of Muslim anti-Semitism”, adding, however, that she cannot judge how bad it will be. She also revealed that her aunt from Tel Aviv has repeatedly urged them to move to Israel, insisting they are no longer safe in Germany amid fears of the rise of the party Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) and reports about anti-Semitic attacks in Berlin in the Israeli media. Although Golda revealed that she has never been attacked herself, she also pointed out that it is normal for her to always put her necklace with the Star of David under her clothes, pointing out that boys wear a baseball cap in the summer and a cap over their kippahs in winter.
Another immigrant-to-be, 14-year-old Jamela Etoundi, who has a Cameroonian father and a Jewish mother, complained that she has been bullied by classmates at her state school. They addressed the girl, who was used to being teased “f**king negro,” as “You Jew” after their teacher asked her about her religion. Apart from being harassed at school, she said she was insulted by a stranger in the subway for wearing a T-shirt with the words “Israel Defense Forces”, who confronted her asking “Well, did you build settlements again and steal land?” The situation reportedly escalated into a fight when another passenger stood up for her. However, the case was later closed although the police documented everything.
The non-governmental research and information center anti-Semitism Berlin (Rias) registered 1,083 anti-Semitic incidents in Berlin last year, which is 14 percent more than the previous year. At the same time, Rias project manager Benjamin Steinitz noted that anti-Semitism is taking “threatening forms” and becoming blatant. The number of anti-Semitic attacks increased from 18 to 46 cases and the number of threats increased from 26 to 46.
In 2017, the police crime statistics (PKS) recorded 1,453 anti-Semitic offences in Germany. However, Rias points out that the number of unreported cases is high. Besides this, according to the group, most incidents of anti-Semitism do not constitute a criminal offence but are still traumatic for their targets.”

“So far, double standards are being manifested in that our Western colleagues, mainly in Europe, but also in other parts of the world, do not want to take back foreign terrorists captured by the Americans and Kurds on the eastern bank of the Euphrates”, he said at a press conference in Moscow.

Turkey has been experiencing trouble in obtaining the F-35 jets it ordered since Ankara inked a contract with Moscow on the procurement of Russian S-400 air defence systems. The US authorities claim that the Russian system could gather info about the American jet and reveal its weaknesses to Moscow.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly stated that Ankara will not abandon the S-400 deal despite US pressure. He recalled that Turkey was willing to buy Patriot defence systems instead of Russian-made systems, but Washington had failed to provide a better deal than Moscow.
For its part, the US has reportedly halted all supplies of F-35-related parts to Ankara and threatened it with sanctions in case it obtains Russian S-400s. Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia (HTA), which is considered to be a radical Islamic group that has come under scrutiny from the Australian government, held a conference in Sydney on 27 April to speak out against diversity, the West, and for the need to implement Sharia law.
During the four-hour “Unapologetically Muslim” conference, HTA spokesman Wassim Doureihi, whose name hit world headlines in 2014 after he refused to denounce Daesh* in Syria and Iraq, told the audience, “the West has its boots over [Muslims’] necks”, and voiced his support for a so-called Hudud, an Arabic word which refers to punishments under Sharia law, that can involve chopping off a hand for stealing.

“My kids go to a public school and every so often, I think it’s once or twice a year, whatever it is, they play the national anthem. Personally, out of respect, my kids will stand up but they won’t sing. Should we stand up and sing along? Or should we take a position that expresses our resistance against what the national anthem represents? It’s colonialism. As Muslims we are under the spotlight and as Muslims we have to take positions on things that are not going to be comfortable”, he said.
The conference was held despite a 2016 New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruling which found HTA’s gender segregation policies at public events were a form of unlawful sex discrimination.
It came just three days after Hizb ut-Tahrir announced its Australian spiritual leader Ismail al-Wahwah, who once called on a Turkish audience to lead “the armies of jihad that will conquer Europe and America”, had been released from a Jordanian prison.
He was detained at Amman Airport in July 2018 while travelling in the country with his wife and has remained in Jordanian custody ever since. It, however, remains unknown whether he is now trying to return to Australia.
The Islamist group seeks to replace world governments with a global caliphate ruled by Sharia law, and its “Draft Constitution of the Khilafah State” suggests punishing ex-Muslims, who they call “apostates” by death, as well as introducing gender segregation.

Four people have been arrested in Paris for allegedly plotting an attack on security forces in France. The Paris prosecutor’s office said the attack was intended to be put into action in the near future.
The Paris prosecutor’s office on Monday said three adults and a minor had been arrested over a planned attack on French security forces that was due to be carried out in the coming days.
They were arrested on Friday as part of an investigation into terrorist conspiracy that opened on February 1, which is being handled by France’s General Directorate for Internal Security.
“Four people are being held over a plan to carry out an extremely violent terror attack,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters.
The minor had previously been arrested in February 2017 at the age of 15 because he was trying to go to Syria to join the self-styled “Islamic State” group. He is serving a three-year sentence with two years suspended at an educational facility.
The three others are known for common law offenses, according to a French Press Agency source close to the inquiry.
A number of jihadist terror attacks have been carried out in France since 2015, leaving more than 250 people dead.
The Islamic State group has urged followers to target soldiers and police in France.

Although the majority religion of this country of 21 million people is Buddhism, and while Buddhists have indeed been among the persecutors of the disciples of Jesus, it is the Islamic State (ISIS) that has claimed responsibility for the carnage.
When word of this massacre broke, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton tweeted out sympathy for the “Easter worshippers,” the Christian men, women, and children who were murdered and maimed. “The attacks on tourists and Easter worshippers in Sri Lanka are an attack on humanity,” the former American president remarked. Clinton said: “I’m praying for everyone affected by today’s horrific attacks on Easter worshippers and travelers in Sri Lanka.”

A man has died and seven others are wounded after a gunman fired indiscriminately into a crowd that had gathered for Sunday afternoon cookouts along a Baltimore street.

One hears it was a cheerless affair, which seems unfortunate. But then, one wasn’t paying much attention. What were they going to do, except get together and bash You-Know-Who? And sure enough, that’s what they did. Whatever.

Collages featured in the Guardian piece, which are frequently used by activists and left-wing media to demand more press censorship and advertising boycotts in Britain, were put together as part of “research” which argued British front pages should be covered with emotive stories and images which boost support for mass migration — for example, pictures of dead children who had attempted to travel to Europe.
“People had collated every front page which was anti-immigrant. It was certainly Islamophobic,” Jones claimed.
“This was not representative of the kind of society I think we should be,” he complained, before going on to talk of the public’s reaction to his transformation of the publication.
Readers of the newspaper, which now carries articles painting patriotic European leaders like Hungary’s Viktor Orbán as “autocrats” against whom their countrymen are supposedly in “revolt”, were “[not] entirely aware” of the newspaper’s populist stance, Jones claimed, but instead were “sucked into it because they’re loyal to the Express.”
The Express readership were “a compassionate, traditional people” who “were just led down a path” and “reminded me of my parents”, claimed the former Sunday Mirror editor, who suggested that he came from a “lower-middle class background”.
However, Jones was keen to stress that the “Conservative-supporting”, Express-reading instincts of his parents had not been passed down to his own left-liberal son — who the journalist sent to Eton College boarding school to enjoy an elite and expensive private education, in order to “confront the establishment and authority and to try to have a say, but to be authentic.”
The takeover of the Express by Reach/Trinity Mirror — which helped found the far-left “anti-fascist” HOPE not Hate outfit — was greenlighted by the British government last June, despite fears a leftward swing for the tabloid, which went further than any other newspaper in campaigning for Brexit and backing Nigel Farage’s UKIP against the Brussels and Westminster establishment, would negatively impact plurality of views in the British media.

The social network recently banned the campaign pages of prominent UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin (a.k.a “Sargon of Akkad”) and Tommy Robinson, an adviser to UKIP leader Gerard Batten and independent candidate in the upcoming European elections in Britain.
Tommy Robinson and Carl Benjamin’s personal accounts have long since been banned from Twitter under dubious circumstances. In the case of Robinson, Twitter banned his personal account in 2018 for posting facts about migrant crime in the U.K.
Creating and using new accounts after a ban is a violation of Twitter’s policy on ban evasion, and Twitter’s stated reason for banning Benjamin’s account was a violation of that policy. However, both campaign accounts say they were run by campaign staffers, not by Robinson or Benjamin themselves.
A fan page or a campaign account should not be a violation of Twitter’s ban evasion policy — and the banning of political campaign accounts raises the question of unaccountable yet highly influential social media platforms meddling in a democratic election.
Twitter declined to comment for this article, and did not respond to a request for a clarification on the platform’s policies on political campaign pages.
Michael De La Broc, who works for Benjamin’s campaign, said that they took pains to ensure that he did not operate the account personally, in order to stay within Twitter’s rules.
“We will be taking this to the relevant electoral authorities, and if there are grounds, we will be seeking restitution via the courts for this political interference by a foreign entity in our elections,” wrote De La Broc in further tweets.

John T. Earnest came to a small synagogue in a small California city of 50,000 with a rifle and big dreams of killing Jews. In a manifesto posted on 8chan, he boasted, “I would die a thousand times over”.
The Neo-Nazi wannabe killer listed Adolf Hitler as his inspiration. “My act will inspire others to take a stand as well,” he wrote in his manifesto. “And when this revolution starts gaining traction (if I am not killed) I expect to be freed from prison and continue the fight.”
Inside, an elderly Rabbi, a 60-year old woman, an 9-year-old girl, and other Jewish worshipers celebrating the final day of Passover showed him the true meaning of courage.
The older congregants in the sanctuary of Chabad of Poway, the city’s sole Orthodox Jewish synagogue, were reciting Yizkor, the prayer for deceased loved ones, an occasion that can summon even the most secular Jew to the synagogue, while the younger children were playing in the synagogue’s hall.
Had Earnest opened fire in the sanctuary, many of the congregants asking the Lord to embrace their parents and grandparents, and unite their souls with those of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all of their forefathers, would have joined them in death. But instead, the Neo-Nazi was drawn after the Rabbi and the congregation’s children who embodied the innocence and goodness he was driven to destroy.

BBC – Burkina Faso: Christians killed in attack on church
Gunmen have opened fire on a church in northern Burkina Faso, killing at least six people, officials say.
The attackers reportedly arrived on seven motorbikes at the end of Sunday’s service and killed the pastor, two of his sons and three other worshippers.
It is the first attack on a church since jihadist violence erupted in the West African country in 2016.
Fighters affiliated to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group as well as the local Ansarul Islam have been active.
Sunday’s attack on the Protestant church happened in the small town of Silgadji near Djibo, the capital of Soum province, at around 12:00 local time (12:00 GMT).
The number of attackers involved or their possible affiliations is not clear.
Islamist groups have been blamed for a number of attacks in the country in recent years, BBC Afrique’s Simon Gongo reports.
On Friday, five teachers were killed in the east of the country in another incident attributed to jihadists, our correspondent adds.

A group of attackers fired at Christian worshippers in Burkina Faso as the victims were leaving a church service, eyewitnesses have said. Several people have reportedly been killed, including the protestant pastor.
An attack on a church in Burkina Faso killed five people on Sunday, local media reported. At least two other people were missing, according to a security source cited by the AFP news agency.
The pastor of the church was also killed in the raid, which targeted the Protestant congregation in the small northern town of Silgadji, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) away from the capital Ouagadougou.
“The attackers were on motorbikes,” a witness told AFP. “They fired in the air before aiming at the members of the congregation.”
The attack happened in early afternoon, “just as the faithful were leaving the church at the end of the service,” the witness added.
Over one half of Burkina Faso residents are Muslim, but Christians, most of them Catholics, make up some 30 percent of the population. The West African state has been struggling with jihadist violence since 2015.
Jihadist groups regularly target Christian and moderate Muslim clerics in the north of the country. Several hundred people have lost their lives in the violence. A Catholic priest was killed in February in a raid attributed to jihadist groups, and a group of gunmen kidnapped another priest in the north in March.
Merkel set to visit region
The latest raid in Silgadji comes just over a week following the series of deadly Easter bombings in Sri Lanka.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Burkina Faso later this week to express Germany’s commitment to regional stability. Merkel will also visit German soldiers stationed in neighboring Mali, and travel to the construction site of a women’s shelter in Niger.

For decades Hollywood, along with academia, has been one of the two prime movers of cultural Marxism in America: promoting leftist causes and narratives, undermining traditional morality and social structures, and rewriting history. Increasingly, showbiz is now being choked by its own wokeness – just as our universities are – as the social justice whiners have inevitably begun to turn on their own.
Hollywood is floundering. This past Easter weekend at the box office was the worst in more than a decade. The big studios with their mega-budget franchises (where would Hollywood be today without Marvel Comics?) increasingly have to resort to overseas profits to keep afloat. Showbiz awards shows, which have degenerated into self-congratulatory displays of anti-Trump virtue-signaling, have been failing spectacularly, posting record low ratings year after year. Trump Derangement Syndrome has caused celebs to publicly double down on their contempt for all those unwoke Americans in the flyover states, pushing audiences farther away than ever before. Meanwhile, independent flicks like Gosnell and Unplanned aimed at underserved conservative audiences are succeeding despite media blackouts and social media subversion.
Instead of engaging in some serious self-examination and concentrating on projects that might win back the American heartland moviegoer, establishment Hollywood is now preoccupied with proving its commitment to identity-politics ideology. Enforcing diversity of gender and skin color (but not of worldview) in all the “above-the-line” fields (acting, directing, producing, showrunning, etc.) has become the dominant consideration in the entertainment realm now. Next month John Walker Lindh will gain release from federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, after a 20 year sentence for fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. Americans may know little about Jihad Johnny’s service for the Taliban, and less about his career as a fake hip-hop critic.
“Lindh, now 25, has largely disappeared from public attention since his imprisonment in October 2002,” wrote Philip Sherwell in a 2006 Telegraph piece headlined “The New Malcolm X?” In prison Lindh was known as “Hamza” and commanded such stature that “religious advisor” Shakeel Syed told him that he could become “the new Malcolm X.”
In upscale Marin County, California, Lindh attended the elite “alternative” Tamiscal High school. After seeing the 1992 Spike Lee movie Malcolm X, Lindh converted to Islam and began using the name “Suleyman.” That was hardly the student’s only affectation, as James Best confirmed in “Black Like Me,” a 2003 article in Oakland’s East Bay Express, subtitled “John Walker Lindh’s hip-hop daze.”
Under the name Mustafa Naim Mujahid, Lindh wrote online that he was “born in Chocolate City,” Washington DC, and “raised in its vanilla suburbs.” Under the pseudonym “John Doe” he wrote “an excoriating lyrical tirade against rappers of every variety, from Too $hort to Sista Souljah to Marley Marl.” As Best notes, the Lindh was especially cruel to rappers he believed to have gone pop and thereby compromised their blackness.

Germany: Relatives of IS fighters demand gov’t bring grandchildren to Germany
Dozens of relatives of German IS fighters protested in front of the Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Monday, demanding the government take action to return their grandchildren to Germany.
The children are currently stuck in Kurdish refugee camps in Northern Syria and are not allowed to return to their home countries as Kurdistan is not recognised as a state by Germany, which is lacking consular representation in the region, reports say.
Among the protesters was Intessar Aataba, whose only son died after he went to Syria to fight for IS. His wife followed him and gave birth to a boy there, and they are now stuck in a refugee camp near Raqqa.
“Look these are my grandchildren. They’re so small. Look. On the bottom of a tent. Where is Germany? Germany is democratic. Why can’t they pick up the children?” she said as she showed photos of the child.
Many children born abroad to foreign IS fighters remain in refugee camps in Syria, many of them being orphans. In France, several orphaned children have been allowed to return, but decisions are reportedly being made on a case by case basis.

Some 30 family members and friends of people who left Germany to join the Islamic State group in Syria demonstrate outside the Foreign Ministry in Berlin to call for the repatriation of their relatives’ children held in Syria.
Sri Lanka: Muslim community reacts to Easter bombings and police crackdown
Members of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka reacted to the increase in Islamophobia and increased police presence in Colombo on Saturday in wake of the deadly Easter attacks the took place in the country’s capital last week.
“They look at the Muslims as all the Muslims are terrorists, or that they are really doubtful, they do not know whom to believe, or they should not believe,” Islamic Scholar Ash Sheik Arkam Nooramith said, adding “so far, there has not been any psychical attack on us. But we have some fear. There is a lot of hate speech on us available in social media.”
“We are willing to support the secret officials and the arm forces to eradicate that. And we can see that the government is doing that. Government is going house by house, and when there is any suspicion, they are clearing it out. So we are really grateful, but things are not as settled and calm. We are still living in fear,” he said.
“Sri Lankan army, police [inaudible] difference mechanism has to do their job. But they should be mindful, without harassing the innocent people,” Excom Member media spokesperson Ash Sheikh M. Fazil Farook said.
At least 253 people were killed and a further 450 were injured on April 21, in eight seemingly coordinated explosions which rocked hotels and churches across the country.
Six blasts took place in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo while two further explosions occurred in the western city of Negombo and the eastern city of Batticaloa.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena announced that there would be changes in the top ranks of Sri Lanka’s security forces “within 24 hours” while speaking at a press conference in Colombo on April 24th.

BEIRUT — The leader of ISIL has appeared for the first time in 5 years in a video released by the extremist group’s propaganda arm.
The video released by Al-Furqan on Monday shows Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi appearing with a bushy grey and red beard, wearing a black robe with a beige vest and seated on the floor with what appears to be a machine-gun propped up next to him.
It is his first video appearance since he delivered a sermon at the al-Nuri mosque in the Iraqi city of Mosul in 2014.
The SITE Intelligence group said al-Baghdadi acknowledged in the video the defeat in the battle for Baghouz, the group’s last stronghold in Syria, and discussed the bombings in Sri Lanka that killed more than 250 people.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, self declared caliph of ISIS, appeared in new video published today. These are the first pictures of him since some three plus years ago. He mentions the recent attacks in Sri Lanka which killed over 250 people and the recent ouster of Omar al-Bashir in Sudan. A short excerpt of the 18 minutes long video can be seen here.
There are three disguised people Baghdadi is talking to. The video is heavily edited and it appears that it was filmed in many takes. The visible walls are of drapery but do not seem to be the inside of a tent. The ground is flat. The light is artificial. The sound is solid but has no echos. This was probably filmed in a room of a larger house.
The gun to his right is a Kalashnikov AKS-74U with a large (45 rounds) magazine:
US journalist C. J. Chivers reported that the gun was nicknamed “the Osama” in jihadist circles, after Osama bin Laden was photographed next to an AKS-74U.
Pictures of the (now dead) leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi showed the same type of gun. It is not a very practical weapon but demonstrates Baghdadi’s heritage.
Baghdadi accepts the oath of loyalty from groups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. He says that the attack in Sri Lanka was in retaliation for Baghouz in Syria where ISIS made its last stand. Baghdadi claims that his jihadists did not hand over any area and died fighting to the end in Sirte, Mosul, Raqqa and Baghouz. At least the claim about Raqqa is wrong. When the U.S. destroyed Raqqa some 2-3,000 ISIS fighters negotiated their exit with the U.S. proxies on the ground and moved south-east to attack the Syrian army.
Baghdadi says that ISIS will eventually win in a war of attrition against the “Crusaders”. This points to a continuous, geographically dispersed terror campaign after it no longer holds any ground. At one point one of the three other people gives him a folder with some plans. The folder is marked Wilayat Turkey. (Wilayat means province of the Islamic State).
Baghdadi looks well fed. The reports of him ailing and thin are obviously wrong. His face and hands and those of his guests show no signs of harsh weather or even sun exposure.
One wonders whose guest he is.

al masdar news – ISIS leader trapped inside of Syrian desert: intel
The Islamic State’s leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi reportedly attempted to cross into Iraq from neighboring Syria this month.
Speaking to Russia Today, an Iraqi intelligence officer said that the Iraqi armed forces managed to block the terrorist leader’s entry into Iraq from Syria, forcing him to return to the vast desert region of the Homs Governorate.
“Al-Baghdadi has been trying to enter Iraq for weeks, but he could not due to the strict security measures applied on the Iraqi-Syrian border,” the officer told Russia Today on condition of anonymity, as cited by Iraqi News.
He claimed that Baghdadi is currently hiding in Jabal Abu Rajmin with some of his supporters near the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.
Prior to this claim by an Iraqi intelligence officer, the Russian intelligence officers claimed that the whereabouts of the Islamic State were unknown at this time.
Al-Baghdadi has been declared dead on several occasions in the past; however, recent reports indicate that the terrorist leader is still alive and hiding in eastern Syria.

Germany: Kosovan and Serbian leaders arrive at Western Balkans Conference
President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic arrived at a multinational conference aimed at normalising relations between the two nations in Berlin on Monday.
The summit, co-hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to bring back on track the normalisation process between Serbia and Kosovo, after efforts previously led by the European Commission failed to deliver positive results.

Joseph Hippolito Perhaps the most tragic image from the Easter massacre in Sri Lanka is a picture of girls in white dresses and veils who were about to make their first Communion at one of the two Catholic churches that Muslim terrorists attacked. Instead of forming a line to receive the Eucharist, the girls were aligned in a row of neat, lifeless bodies.
“I condemn this barbaric Islamist violence,” wrote Cardinal Robert Sarah in his Easter tweet. Sarah, from Guinea, is the prefect for the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
Yet far too many Catholic prelates express the kind of vapid sentimentality Pope Francis displayed in tweeting about the massacre:
“Today, too, let us join in prayer with the Christian community of Sri Lanka, which was struck by terrible violence on Easter Sunday. We entrust to the risen Lord the victims, the wounded and all the suffering.”
Francis’ response is the latest in a series of similar non-reactions from the Vatican and Catholic prelates to the murder of the innocent and the persecution of the faithful, especially by Muslims. But such responses demonstrate more than moral apathy. They illustrate the Vatican’s policy of appeasing Islam at the expense of the innocent, which reflects Rome’s embrace of secular utopianism.

Muslim Attacks Have Claimed 146K Lives Since 9/11, German Media Says
While Sri Lanka is still trying to deal with the wave of terror that left over 250 people dead and about 500 injured nationwide, the German outlet Die Welt has pointed out that radical Islamist terror became a determining factor in global politics after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on 11 September 2001.
Since 9/11, Islamist extremists have perpetratedat least 31,221 attacks and killed 146,811 people worldwide, a study by the German outlet Die Welt am Sonntag has found out. According to its article “18 Years of Terror”, the number of violent attacks with at least 12 victims exceeds 3,000 acts, with 95,934 dead. Most of the victims have been Muslim.
The geography of Islamist terror stretches from European cities, such as Brussels, Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid, and Barcelona – to the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, where attacks are more frequent. India and Afghanistan, Iraq and Nigeria – all these countries have witnessed numerous deadly strikes.
The newspaper analysed information from the Global Terrorism Database compiled by the University of Maryland and counted the attacks carried out by jihadists and members of different terror groups, including al-Qaeda, Daesh*, Boko Haram, and al-Shabaab.
9/11 as Point of No Return
The attacks on the US on 11 September 2001 mark the beginning of the tragic count. On that day 18 years ago, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked aeroplanes to bring down the twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Centre and attack the Pentagon, with one crashing in a Pennsylvania field. The attack — the worst in the history of the US — claimed the lives of some 3,000 people.
2004 Madrid Bombings
One of the deadliest Islamist terrorist strikes hit Spain on 11 March 2004, when multiple explosions on commuter trains during rush hour in Madrid left 193 dead and 2,000 injured. The bombings, said to be the most deadly attack in the history of Spain and Europe’s worst terror act since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, were attributed to a radical Jihadist cell linked to al-Qaida.
Boko Haram Atrocities
Islamist militants from Boko Haram have been behind the most gruesome attacks in Nigeria. One of their most egregious acts was an operation against the towns of Gamboru and Ngala in May 2014. Over the course of 12 hours, the extremists killed some 300 residents.
Attack on Air Force Cadets in Iraq
In recent years, Daesh has carried out numerous attacks in Iraq. In 2014, the terrorists targeted Iraqi Air Force cadets in Tikrit, slaughtering some 1,570 Shia and non-Muslim students. One of the deadliest attacks came two years later, in July 2016, when coordinated car bombings in a predominantly Shia district in Baghdad took the lives of at least 340 people.
2015-2016: Massacres in Paris and Nice
The terrorist attacks in the French capital on 13 November 2015 were considered the worst in France’s history and resulted in a two-year-long nationwide state of emergency. Three coordinated groups of terrorists staged a series of attacks in Paris and one of the city’s northern suburbs, Saint-Denis, which left 130 dead and over 350 wounded. A series of explosions occurred outside Stade de France. In north-eastern Paris, three gunmen burst into the Bataclan concert hall with approximately 1,500 people inside, opening fire and taking some of the audience members hostage.
Half a year later on July 14 2016, a 19-tonne cargo truck drove into a crowd of people who were celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France. The incident took the lives of 86 people and injured 434 more. Daesh claimed responsibility for the terror attack.
2016 Brussels Attacks
Belgium became yet another target of terrorists in 2016. On March 22, 2016 two explosions hit Brussels Airport, with a third detonating inside a train carriage at the Maalbeek metro station half an hour later. A total of 32 people were killed, and over 300 more were injured. Daesh claimed responsibility for these attacks as well.
2017 Attacks in Africa
One of the deadliest attacks in Africa dates back to 2017. In October of that year, 588 people were killed and more than 300 injured in suicide truck bombings in Mogadishu, Somalia. The attack was attributed to Islamist terrorists from al-Shabaab. Just a month later, Egypt’s deadliest terrorist act was carried out by dozens of Daesh radicals. They stormed a mosque near the city of Bir al-Abed, killing 311 people.
2018 Syrian Bombings
Syria has suffered numerous terror attacks since the civil war broke out there in 2011. One of the deadliest strikes was carried out last July by Daesh. At least 255 people died in suicide bombings and gunfire in the Syrian city of Sweida.
2019 Sri Lanka Bombings
This list of the deadliest terror acts concludes with the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka on 21 April 2019, when multiple blasts killed at least 253 people and injured over 500 others in hotels and churches. The Daesh terrorist group (banned in Russia) has reportedly claimed responsibility for them.
