Germany: Severe incendiary attack on AfD sympathizer+++

“Consular operations in Pakistan remain unchanged. This is a bilateral issue of ongoing discussion between the US and Pakistani governments and we are not going to get into the specifics at the time”, a State Department spokesperson said on Friday.
According to the State Department’s federal register notification, dated 22 April, “for some countries sanctions begin by targeting officials who work in the ministries responsible for accepting the return of that country’s nationals with escalation scenarios that target family members of those officials and potentially officials of other ministries and then other categories of applicants if initial sanctions do not prove effective at encouraging greater cooperation on removals by the targeted government”.
Former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani has emphasised that Islamabad’s refusal to accept its citizens deported from the US is not new, but sanctions will create obstacles for Pakistanis willing to travel to the United States.
“This measure will create hardship for Pakistanis who want or need to travel to the US and could have been avoided if Pakistani authorities had not ignored American requests to respect their legal requirements for deportation”, he said.
Section 243 of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides for discontinuance of visa issuance as a penalty for those countries that refuse or “unreasonably delay” accepting the return of their deported nationals. The US has already introduced visa restrictions on Ghana, Guyana, the Gambia, Cambodia, Eritrea, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Myanmar and Laos.”

But the university has refused to bow to the protests. Prof Birgitta Wolff, the president of the university, has defended the right to “freedom of scholarship and academic discourse” and accused the students of acting as a “self-appointed discourse police”.
The conference in fact has its origins in earlier protests at an exhibition on contemporary Islamic fashion at Frankfurt’s Museum of Applied Arts, which students accused of trivialising the Muslim tradition of hijab.
Prof Schröter organised the conference on ‘The Islamic headscarf: symbol of dignity or oppression’ in response to those protests.
Speakers scheduled to speak at the event include Alice Schwarzer, one of Germany’s best known feminists, and Necla Kelek, a prominent critic of traditional Islam.
They also include Abdel-Hakim Ourghi, a male Islamic theologian who opposes the wearing of headscarves, and Khola Maryam Hübsch, a well-known journalist who wears a headscarf.
But students posting on an anonymous Instagram account under the hashtag “Schröter_raus”, or “Schröter out” this week accused the event of “playing into the hands of the far-Right”.
“Especially today, with the rising appeal of far-Right populism, women wearing the headscarf in Germany are victims of violence,” a post on the account read. The account has since been taken down.
“The accusation of Islamophobia becomes a blanket argument against any possible criticism of Islam,” Prof Schröter responded. “If freedom of expression is no longer possible, then that is the end of a free democratic society.”
The university’s student committee distanced itself from the protests. “The topic of the headscarf seems to us to be an excuse,” Fatma Keser, a spokesman, said. “We think it is important Islam is researched. The hate campaign wants to prevent that.”
“Statements like ‘Schröter_raus’ are beyond any scientific or democratic discourse. They are therefore unacceptable. Such statements have nothing to do with the quality requirements of an academic discourse and are unworthy of anyone who identifies themselves as members of our university,” Prof Wolff, the university president, said.”

The risky move to board the train, known as “La Bestia” (The Beast), followed a mass breakout of migrants from a holding center in the southern border city of Tapachula on Thursday night. The government estimated some 1,300 people escaped but said a majority later returned to the center.

Thousands of Central American migrants in Mexico are in need of assistance.
Pope Francis has donated 500,000 dollars to assist migrants in Mexico. The funds, from the Peter’s Pence collections, will be distributed among 27 projects promoted by sixteen Mexican dioceses and religious congregations, which requested assistance in continuing to provide food, lodging, and basic necessities to the migrants.

According to a statement from Peter’s Pence, “In recent months, thousands of migrants have arrived in Mexico, having travelled more than 4,000 kilometres on foot and with makeshift vehicles from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Men and women, often with young children, flee poverty and violence, hoping for a better future in the United States. However, the US border remains closed to them.”
Diminished aid and media coverage
In particular, the aid is intended to assist the more than 75,000 people who arrived in Mexico in 2018, in six migrant caravans. “All these people were stranded, unable to enter the United States, without a home or livelihood”, the statement reads. “The Catholic Church hosts thousands of them in hotels within the dioceses or religious congregations, providing basic necessities, from housing to clothing”.
Although a great deal of attention was focused on the caravans at the time, the Peter’s Pence statement notes that “media coverage of this emergency has been decreasing, and as a result, aid to migrants by the government and private individuals has also decreased”.
Transparent use of donations
The statement from Peter’s Pence insists that “a regulated and transparent use of the resources, which must be accounted for, is required before the aid is assigned”. It notes that thirteen projects have already been approved, with another fourteen currently being evaluated.
“Thanks to these projects”, the statement concludes, “and thanks to Christian charity and solidarity, the Mexican Bishops hope to be able to continue helping our migrant brothers and sisters”.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — A gun battle erupted on Saturday as Sri Lankan security forces raided a house in search of suspects linked to the Easter Sunday bombings, and four people inside detonated explosives as the authorities closed in.
The security forces said they found the bodies of 15 people inside, including six children and one person killed in the gun battle. A woman and child, both “seriously wounded,” were evacuated from the house and taken to a hospital, the army said.
The house, in a town on Sri Lanka’s east coast, was cordoned off after the overnight raid, but security forces waited until dawn to search it because it is in a crowded neighborhood.
Brig. Sumith Atapattu, a spokesman for the Sri Lankan military, said it was “too early to tell” whether the house was directly linked to the group that carried out the coordinated bombings on Easter Sunday at churches, luxury hotels and other sites in Sri Lanka, killing more than 250 people.

The tenants said they did not have identification with them, but promised to provide it the next day, he said.
Members of the mosque federation returned in the evening with a local official, said the man, who asked not to be identified because he feared for his safety. As they approached the house from the back, the first explosion occurred, said the man, adding that the bombers might have suspected that someone was coming for them.
The man, who was at home when the first blast happened, said he then heard continuous gunfire and another explosion. He saw people running, including a police constable. About 30 minutes later, he said, security personnel arrived in force.
Another house a few miles away was also raided on Friday. The army said troops there found Islamic State flags, suicide kits, military uniforms and explosives with detonators.
The raids began just hours after President Maithripala Sirisena promised a house-to-house search of the entire country and a “total reorganization” of Sri Lanka’s security apparatus. His government is under enormous pressure for failing to act on repeated warnings that attacks on churches were being planned.
“Every household in the country will be checked,” Mr. Sirisena said in a meeting on Friday, according to a statement released by his office. “The lists of permanent residents of every house will be established to ensure no unknown persons could live anywhere.”
The country continued to remain on high alert, as security forces arrested dozens more people — on top of the 70 whom Mr. Sirisena said had been arrested by Friday. Among those arrested on Friday was a man believed to be the driver of the attack’s suspected mastermind, Zaharan Hashim, and a deputy mayor of Negombo, local news media reports said.
In parts of the eastern coast, a curfew has remained in place since Friday afternoon. In Colombo, the capital, where a curfew was due to go into effect again at 10 p.m. Saturday, most of the streets were emptying early in the evening, on what would otherwise be a busy night. Shopping malls and coffee shops began closing around sunset, while many restaurants and bars remain closed.
Frustration and fear have continued to grip Sri Lanka since the Easter bombings, particularly in Colombo, as officials have warned that other potential bombers could still be on the run and plotting attacks.
Sri Lankan security officials wrote a memo 10 days before the bombings warning that attacks were being planned, including names, addresses and phone numbers of people believed to be involved, but the president and prime minister have said the memo never reached them. Foreign intelligence agencies had repeatedly warned that attacks were being planned, with one such warning coming just hours before the bombings.

ARAB NEWS – Sri Lanka’s Muslims defy mosque ‘ban’ to pray for peace
COLOMBO: Friday prayers in Sri Lanka were performed peacefully and passed without incident, despite an appeal from a government minister for Muslims to stay away from mosques for security reasons and out of respect for victims of deadly bombings last weekend.
Muslims prayed at mosques in the capital Colombo as well as other places including Kandy, Beruwela, Galle, Kalutara and Ratnapura.
Mohammed Reyyaz, from Colombo Dewatagaha Mosque, told Arab News that the prayers were conducted successfully and without any problems.
He added that turnout was only 75 percent of the normal Friday congregation. Some worshippers were absent because they had taken extended leave because of the security situation.
A. H. M. Iqbal, secretary-general of Maligawatte mosque, told Arab News that there was 100 percent attendance.
He thanked Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith for the compromise, tolerance and friendship extended to the Muslim community following the blasts that hit churches on Easter Sunday.
But there was a troubling discovery in one mosque in Colombo. Armed forces found a cache of 46 swords and 15 daggers in a room belonging to the imam. Police had been acting on a tip-off. The imam was taken into custody for questioning.
A senior member of the mosque’s congregation, who gave his name as Abdul Aziz, told Arab News that the weapons were stored in the mosque because there were fears of revenge attacks.
There were hauls elsewhere in Sri Lanka. In Samanthurai, a township in the eastern province that is mostly populated by Muslims, police found an ammunition dump including state-of-the art drones owned by an extremist group.

BREITBART – Sri Lanka: Police Find Weapons Cache, 47 Swords in Mosque Raid
Police in Sri Lanka conducted a series of raids Friday on suspected jihadists, finding in one mosque in Colombo’s suburb of Slave Island a stockpile of 47 swords alongside counterfeit military uniforms, a suicide bomber jacket, and machetes.
In a nationwide address, President Maithripala Sirisena revealed that police had arrested around 70 individuals in connection with jihadist activity since the Easter Sunday bombings that killed over 250 people and have identified 140 people who may have been involved in the attacks.
The Sri Lankan outlet Lankadeepa published images from the Slave Island mosque where police found the weapons, revealing thatpolice found the swords in question under the bed of the head imam.
Along with the swords, police told reporters they found 15 machetes and 25 outfits that appeared to be army uniforms. Police said they arrested one suspect in connection to the raid, but did not specify whether the individual is believed to have been involved in the Easter jihadist attacks. They also did not identify the ideology of the mosque in question. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Local media reported several instances of potentially related police activity on Friday. In Balangoda, about 90 miles from Colombo, police arrested an unnamed “youth” a tipster warned may have been planning an attack on the nation’s parliament. Police told reporters they found live ammunition as well as passes into parliament and a map of the legislative complex. Police noted they did not find explosives in the young man’s home.
The Daily Mirror reported on yet another controlled explosion Friday, this time behind a courthouse where police found a “bag stuffed with gunpowder” in a garbage dump. Controlled explosions occurred in several locations throughout Colombo following the attack as police encountered suspicious packages and vehicles. As the Islamic State, nor any other terrorist group, claimed the attacks for some time, police suspected that the six suicide bombings were not the last of the planned attacks.
Terrorists targeted three churches and three hotels on Easter Sunday, detonating explosives near children to maximize the number of young Christians dying, according to eyewitnesses. At press time, the death count stands at 253 people. While several foreigners were killed in the attacks, Sri Lanka’s minority Christian community was the primary target and suffered tremendously given how crowded the churches were for Easter Mass and the hotels for holiday brunches.
Police initially identified the jihadist group National Thawheed Jama’ath (NTJ) as the responsible party, a Muslim fundamentalist group previously known for local vandalism of Buddhist statues. The Islamic State claimed the attack some days later, publishing photos that appeared to show the head of NTJ, Zahran Hashim, pledging allegiance to the jihadist outfit. A man claiming to be the head of NTJ told Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror that they group had expelled Hashim for extremist views and notified police, but that Sri Lankan authorities did not act on the warning.
Locals near the mosque where Hashim preached refuted the claim that the NTJ’s mosque did not allow him to preach there; the newspaper noted that 11 mosques in Hashim’s neighborhood are known as fundamentalist or Wahhabist, the latter being a specific Saudi fundamentalist sect of Sunni Islam. Hashim also amassed thousands of followers on Facebook and Youtube by posting belligerent sermons calling for jihad.
Sri Lankan officials have repeatedly stated they believe such a large attack would have been impossible to execute without help from abroad.
Speaking on Friday, Sirisena said Hashim likely died in one of the six suicide attacks. Police have begun the operations necessary to arrest the 140 suspects still believed to be abroad, he added.
Sirisena also defended himself once again from accusations of negligence, stating that a recent trip to India did not get in the way of him receiving information that could have prevented the attack. Sirisena, along with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several high-ranking officials, immediately denied knowledge of a threat after the attack, accusing intelligence officials of hiding a letter from the Indian government specifically warning of a jihadist plot on Easter Sunday. Wickremesinghe and Sirisena have been embroiled in a political crisis since October, when Sirisena attempted to unconstitutionally remove Wickremesinghe from power. Sirisena has excluded the prime minister and his cabinet from intelligence briefings since December.
Sri Lankan officials urged both Muslims and Christians to pray at home rather than congregate in public as the weekend began; Muslims typically go to mosque on Fridays. Hashim reportedly clashed with Sufi Muslims, considered too moderate by Sunni jihadis, before his pivot to targeting Christians. While Christians have reportedly heeded the warning and most Catholic churches have canceled Sunday Mass, many Muslims took to prayer on Friday, according to CNN.
Most of Sri Lanka’s Christians, seven percent of the population, are Catholic. The country boasts a similar percentage of Muslims, while the majority of citizens are Buddhist.

Now that Joe Biden has announced his candidacy for the presidency in 2020, it is time to have some of the same conversations we had on the previous occasions when Biden announced or intimated a run for the so-far-elusive Oval Office.
The one that is getting the most play, deservedly so, is his well-documented advice not to conduct a raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in May 2011. In October 2015, The New York Times ran a column on the problem Biden’s opposition to the raid posed for a run in 2016, noting that if he did run, his role would be seen as a “potential weakness that Mrs. Clinton has signaled she might exploit.”
But it isn’t merely that Biden is perceived as having made the wrong call on bin Laden. It’s also that over time, he came to deny the reality, which makes him either a liar or addle-pated. As the Times article notes:

Critics of US President Donald Trump and his policy regarding the Iranian government are quick to condemn him for the sanctions he has imposed on the theocratic establishment. Their argument is anchored in the idea that the only informed and effective policy that will deal with Iran’s clerical establishment is rooted in enticing them in from the cold: in oher words, appeasement.
These critics had the opportunity to initiate and expand appeasement policies during the eight-year administration of former President Barack Obama. Throughout this time, President Obama made unprecedented concessions in an attempt to appease the ruling mullahs. He met them with generosity and flexibility every step of the way. What was the outcome?
As sanctions against Iran were lifted during the Obama administration, it quickly became clear that those actions instead gave Iran global legitimacy in the eyes of the international community. This newfound legitimacy and the lifting of sanctions generated billions of dollars in revenue for Iran’s military institution, the Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as for Iran’s militia and terror groups.
Tehran used that influx of revenues to expand its influence throughout the region, including in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon. The expansion campaign proved to be immensely successful.
Iran is fortunate that their sanctions can’t be read with Geiger counters.
That they are, I keep hoping that there will be a rebellion and a new (friendly) government before we are forced to use some of our advanced weapons.

“Decisions concerning asylum applications have allegedly been postponed for several weeks as German authorities are set to reassess the security situation in Syria, according to media reports. Last year, Germany’s interior minister decided to extend a deportation moratorium for people from the country, citing the possible danger.
The German Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has apparently been pushing back asylum decisions in recent weeks, the German media group Funke reports. According to the group’s newspapers, migration authorities are postponing applications mainly of people from Syria, who are generally granted subsidiary protection.
The country’s Interior Ministry clarified at the media’s request that this concerns cases for which the proposed changes to the BAMF guidelines would be relevant when making a decision.
The report suggests that the migration body re-evaluated the security situation in Syria and updated its internal guidelines in mid-March; however, it is not publicly known yet what the assessment was. The BAMF is subordinate to the Interior Ministry, thus the latter needs to decide on the guidelines, which has not happened yet.
The report says that Interior Ministry, headed by Horst Seehofer, known for his hard-line stance on migration, is to coordinate an assessment of the security situation in Syria with the Foreign Ministry…”

The media outlet didn’t specify when the footage was shot, but said that it was released by the IRGC. The carrier in the video appears to be the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered USS Dwight D. Mr Biden has collected the sum in rental payments for the property next to his waterfront home in Wilmington since April according to Federal purchasing documents.
The agency pays $2,200 a month for the house. The U.S. Secret Service will have paid $66,000 in rent for the house by the time the contract expires in fall 2013.
The Secret Service said the close proximity of the property to the Vice-President’s home meant that they could provide a high level of security for him and his family.

Senior Hindu priests were taken on a tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, the Minister of Tolerance.
Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the organisation BAPS, which is building the temple in Abu Dhabi, and 50 sadhus or priests visited the Grand Mosque on Sunday. They were guided by Sheikh Nahyan and Dr Yousif Alobaidli, director general of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, who explained the significance of various aspects of the landmark.
The Mahant Swami paid respects to the 99 names of Allah that are inscribed in calligraphy on the wall of the mosque. He signed the guest book, where he praised the efforts of the government and the people of the UAE in promoting global harmony.
Sheikh Nahyan then drove the Mahant Swami in a golf cart to see the Martyrs’ Memorial and gave the priest a book about the Grand Mosque.
Earlier in the day, the priests met Sheikh Nahyan at a private majlis in Abu Dhabi where the Mahant Swami presented him with a gold-plated amrut kalash, a vessel symbolising the nectar of immortality for health, happiness and enlightenment — it is considered a precious gift by Hindus.
The Mahant and Brahmavihari Swami, a senior priest overseeing the temple construction, discussed subjects of interfaith harmony and cultural inclusiveness with Sheikh Nahyan.
The priests were accompanied by Indian businessman BR Shetty.
The visit to the UAE this week is for a ceremony to mark the laying of a foundation stone that marks the start of construction of the country’s first traditional stone temple.
The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is a religious and social organisation that runs 1,200 temples in India and across the world.

Macron should be ‘honest’ about Armenian genocide: Turkish President
Macron decided in February to formally to mark the mass killings and forced deportations of Armenians by troops from the Ottoman Empire — which preceded modern-day Turkey and sided with German and Austro-Hungary in World War I.
France on Wednesday held its first “national day of commemoration of the Armenian genocide”. It was the first major European country to recognise the massacres as genocide in 2001 and Macron has said his decision on a commemoration is designed to show Paris “knows how to look history in the face”.
But Erdogan, who has urged “political novice” Macron to “focus on massacres committed by French troops during the colonial era” on Saturday again denounced the idea.
“Delivering a message to 700,000 Armenians who live in France will not save you, Monsieur Macron,” Erdogan told a gathering of his ruling party in Kizilcahamam, north of Ankara. “Learn first to be honest in politics — if you are not you cannot win.” Erdogan added that he had told Macron his views several times face to face.
Turkish officials have indicated France should look first at its own record, notably in Algeria and its role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Rwanda’s current government accuses Paris of being complicit in the atrocities committed by the majority Hutu community on minority Tutsis.
France has always denied the allegations and Macron announced the creation of a panel of historians and researchers earlier in April which will be tasked with investigating France’s role.
Some 30 countries and a number of historians recognise the 1915 massacre of between 1.2 and 1.5 million Armenians as genocide. Ankara rejects the term, saying World War I brought countless fatalities on both sides against a further backdrop of famine and civil war.
Armenians commemorate the massacres on April 24 — the day in 1915 when thousands of Armenian intellectuals suspected of harbouring nationalist sentiment and being hostile to Ottoman rule were rounded up.
At the Paris commemoration, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe declared France wanted to contribute to having the massacre internationally recognised as a crime against humanity.
He added Paris “will not be impressed by any lies” on the matter and supported “historical accuracy and reconciliation”.

WELLINGTON: Extremist ideology must be defeated, Britain’s Prince William said during a visit to a New Zealand mosque on Friday where dozens were killed in a mass shooting last month after earlier meeting survivors of the massacre.
William, the Duke of Cambridge, spoke at Al Noor mosque in the South Island city of Christchurch, one of two mosques where 50 people were killed by a lone gunman during Friday prayers on March 15. Forty-three people were killed at Al Noor mosque.
“What happened here was fuelled by a warped ideology that knows no boundaries,” William told an audience that included Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and other religious and community leaders. “Extremism in all its forms must be defeated,” he said.

“The United States on Friday, April 26 found backing from rivals Russia and China on the key formula of a peace deal it is negotiating in Afghanistan – withdrawing troops in return for Taliban pledges not to welcome foreign extremists.
Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. envoy who is set shortly to hold his latest round of talks with the Taliban, called the consensus a “milestone” in efforts to end the war after he met Russian and Chinese representatives in Moscow.
A joint statement by the three countries called for an “inclusive Afghan-led” peace process and outlined points expected to feature in an eventual agreement.
“The three sides call for an orderly and responsible withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan as part of the overall peace process,” the statement issued by the U.S. State Department said.
They also said that the Taliban has made a “commitment” to fight Islamic State and to “cut ties with Al-Qaeda, ETIM [East Turkestan Islamic Movement], and other international terrorist groups.”
The Taliban has promised to “ensure the areas they control will not be used to threaten any other country,” the statement said, calling on them to prevent any “terrorist recruiting, training and fund-raising.”
One major sticking point is the Taliban’s refusal to negotiate with the government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, which has wide-ranging international support.
Hopes for a breakthrough suffered a major setback on April 19 after a key summit between the Taliban and Afghan officials was indefinitely postponed in a row over the large number of delegates Kabul wanted to send. The insurgents had insisted they would only talk to Ghani’s government in a “personal capacity,” but any contact between the two parties would have been hugely significant.
“The three sides encourage the Afghan Taliban to participate in peace talks with a broad, representative Afghan delegation that includes the government as soon as possible,” the statement said, adding that they “support a second round of intra-Afghan dialogue in Doha.”
Khalilzad said that the statement, along with his talks earlier in the week in London with European envoys, “means we have an emerging international consensus on U.S. approach to end the war and assurances terrorism never again emanates from Afghanistan.”

America’s ‘forever war’
President Donald Trump is eager to end what is sometimes called America’s “forever war.”
The United States first sent troops to Afghanistan in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, and there are now around 14,000 U.S. troops in the country, working with NATO’s Resolute Support non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces, or in separate counter-terrorism operations.
More than 2,400 U.S. personnel have been killed in the conflict, and more than $900 billion has been spent.
In December, Trump decided that there would be a “significant withdrawal” of troops from Afghanistan, a U.S., a day after he announced a withdrawal from Syria.
But during his confirmation hearing in early December, General Kenneth McKenzie, the new commander of United States Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East including Afghanistan, voiced concern about a premature U.S. military withdrawal from the country, warning that local forces who took over the fight against the Taliban at the start of 2015 were not ready to go it alone.
“I do know that today it would be very difficult for them to survive without our and our coalition partners’ assistance,” McKenzie said.
Russia and China both have strong interests in Afghanistan. Some 14,000 Soviet soldiers were killed in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989 in a conflict with U.S.-backed Islamist mujahideen guerrillas.
China has been stepping up its involvement in Afghanistan both militarily and economically as it voices worries that militants could sneak into its restive Muslim-majority Xinjiang region.
Khalilzad will also hold separate talks during his latest trip with Pakistan and India, which have strongly different views on Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said the current peace process in Afghanistan “presents a historic opportunity for peace in the region and Pakistan is fully supporting the process.”
“Pakistan will not be party to any internal conflict in Afghanistan anymore,” Khan said.
One country that has criticized the U.S. approach is Iran, whose foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, recently said that the United States had alienated Afghans by turning the Taliban into king-makers.”
