Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

    • I agree with the comment @GP: “I just bet this meeting is “standard operating procedure”–for a couple of evil globalist jackals!”

  2. NR: This looks very grim for Boeing. Not only did previous versions exhibit almost identical control surface dropouts but related advisories were omitted from the updated Max manual.

That the plane impacted at nearly top speed and left a +30 foot deep crater with almost no recoverable remains suggests catastrophic and prolonged loss of control before impact (and not any pilot error). The Right Stuff’s Chuck Yeager and his test pilot confrères called this, “augering in”.

Some industry analysts are speculating that this entire product failure and associated fleet groundings could cost reinsurers an eye-watering +1 billion USD—with the prospect of this becoming the single largest civil aviation liability settlement in the history of air travel.

You just know that’s gonna leave a mark. Think: PG&E’s Paradise, California wildfire but with wings and engines.

The part about engine repositioning causing a shift in aircraft center of gravity is particularly damning. Along with the ham-fisted editing job, this is likely to be Boeing’s Pinto.

To provide some perspective, payouts over this one case of negligent engineering and project management may eclipse even that double-decker financial hemorrhage otherwise known as the A380.

All the same, I still can’t help but wonder what would have happened if a DC-10, full of Ford Pintos, all with Firestone 500 radials had crashed into Three Mile Island …

A little-known quirk on the Boeing 737 may have made things difficult for the pilots of the crashed Ethiopian Airlines flight

    • Ethiopia’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) released its preliminary report on the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 on Thursday.

    • According to the reports, the pilots noted that the manual stabilizer trim controls did not work.

    • That may be due to a decades-old design idiosyncrasy found on the Boeing 737, The Air Current reported.

Ethiopia’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) released its preliminary report on the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302 on Thursday. One of the most confounding details to emerge from the 33-page document was the finding that the pilots successfully turned Boeing’s troublesome MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) off only to switch it back on after the manual trim controls for the horizontal stabilizers didn’t work.

Roughly three minutes into the six-minute flight, the Captain asked the First Officer if he could manually trim the rear stabilizer — by hand-cranking a trim wheel on the center console between the two pilots — to point the plane’s nose up, the crash report said.

Seconds later, the First Officer replied that the manual trim control was not working, according to the report. This precipitated the pilots’ re-engaging the automatic system and may have ultimately contributed to the flight’s demise.

According to aviation trade publication The Air Current, an idiosyncrasy from the Boeing 737’s past may have cropped up on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.

The publication spoke with former Boeing flight control engineer Peter Lemme along with an Australian Boeing 737 pilot.

Both said that pilots flying the older 737-200 were instructed in training that if the plane’s horizontal stabilizer is tilted too far in the nose down position, the manual crank won’t work while the control yoke is pulled back.

It’s information that has since been removed from the training manuals of subsequent Boeing 737 generations.

The containment building would have been stressed butt the breach might not have been catastrophic. The containment building are built to withstand massive stress so …

      • Yeah, yeah, I know. The US Air Force built a cannon that shoots telephone poles specifically to test those containment structures. But think of how many editors would have spent sleepless nights trying to come up with a good lede for that joke’s scenario.

        • Yeah they would go crazy trying to get the best lead.

Have you ever been in one that was under construction? It is an interesting building to go through, when I was working as a cost accountant for a company supplying equipment for nuclear plants I got a guided tour at Palo Verde Number 2 reactor. That is the plant that Geraldo screwed up the reporting on the equipment that the NRC said couldn’t be used any more because they had changed the specification. Since all of the equipment was built to specific sizes no one wanted the old equipment back and it ended up in the trash pile.

    https://sputniknews.com/news/201904061073876817-libya-airforce-tripoli/

“According to Al Jazeera, aircraft from the Government of National Accord (GNA) have conducted an airstrike against troops from the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, 80 kilometres south of Tripoli.

The broadcaster reported that the airstrike was conducted in the city of Gharyan, earlier seized by the LNA without any clashes. Following the reports, the LNA announced the establishment of a no-fly zone over the western part of the country.

“The Libyan Army declares the western region of the country to be a zone of military operations and is imposing a ban on flights of combat aviation in this area”, the LNA statement, cited by Al Arabiya, said. “We will strike any airports in the west from which combat aircraft carry out their missions”.

A source in the LNA previously told Sputnik that the forces had already captured several settlements and key positions to the west, south, and southwest of Tripoli, including Gharyan, Al-Swani, Janzur, and a checkpoint, located in the Wershiffana area.

The LNA offensive began on Thursday, with Haftar stating he aimed at “liberating Tripoli from terrorists”….”

    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201904061073875826-iran-us-military-terror-list/

“The statement comes several hours after the WSJ reports about the White House’s plans to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO) on 8 April. If taken, this move would be the first time the US has officially blacklisted another county’s military as terrorists.

“If the Revolutionary Guards are placed on America’s list of terrorist groups, we will put that country’s military on the terror blacklist next to Daesh*”, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the head of parliament’s national security committee, said on Twitter.

Both Tehran and Washington have previously accused each other of supporting terrorism and called each other’s actions “terroristic” literally or figuratively.

The decision to designate a group a terrorist organisation is done by the secretary of state, US attorney general and the secretary of the Treasury if the Congress doesn’t block their decision. The group claimed to be a terrorist organisation, however, may request a US appeals court to review the designation.

At the moment the IRGC has already been sanctioned by Washington, as the Department of Treasury imposed sanctions on it in October 2017 under a 9/11-era executive order issued during the George W. Bush administration.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles operates a special office to assist lawmakers, Capitol staff members and constituents. It could soon be shut down if lawmakers support a bill from Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, R-Granite Bay. By Bryan Anderson

It’s all but impossible to find for those who don’t know what they’re looking for.

Room 121 rests at the end of an isolated hallway across the street from the Capitol, is locked at all times and has no signage whatsoever. The only indicator of its existence is a peephole outside the front door.

The special Department of Motor Vehicles office is closed to the public, and if one Republican gets his way, it will be closed to the lawmakers and Capitol staff members using it.

“There’s a secret DMV across from the state Capitol with streamlined service that’s only available to members of the Legislature and a select group of political insiders,” said Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley of Granite Bay. “This is supposed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people, not an oligarchy where a gilded political class enjoys privileges that aren’t available to the people that we represent.”

  18. The UN just unveiled a design for a new floating city that can withstand Category 5 hurricanes

What once seemed like the moonshot vision of tech billionaires and idealistic architects could soon become a concrete solution to several of the world’s most pressing challenges.

At a United Nations roundtable on Wednesday, a group of builders, engineers, and architects debuted a concept for an affordable floating city.

Unlike instances in the past when these futuristic designs have been met with skepticism, the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), Maimunah Mohd Sharif, said the UN would support and shepherd this project to fruition.

“Everybody on the team actually wants to get this built,” said Marc Collins, the CEO of Oceanix, a company that builds floating structures. “We’re not just theorizing.”

  22. Tests Reveal ‘Child’ Migrant, 17, Is Actually 47 Years Old (breitbart, Apr 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/04/06/tests-reveal-17-year-old-migrant-is-actually-47/

“Two men recently attempted to claim asylum stating that they were both minors until fingerprint tests revealed that they were not even close to being under 18.

The two men presented themselves to officers at a police station in the commune of Angoulême in south-west France earlier this week with both claiming that they were 16-years-old in order to take advantage of measures aimed at helping underage asylum seekers Charente Libre reports.

One of the men, who claimed to be from the African nation of Mali, was revealed to be 21 years old, while the other man, who presented police with a birth certificate from Guinea, was revealed to be 47 years old, after his fingerprints were connected to a passport he had used to enter Spain.

The department of Charente, where Angoulême is located, has seen a surge in asylum claims from alleged minor migrants and, as a result, has managed to develop relationships and sharing of information with several different countries to determine the veracity of the claims.

The problem of fake underage migrants in France was highlighted last year when police in Montpellier managed to bust a network from the Ivory Coast who were forging documents in order to help adult migrants claim asylum as minors.

Prosecutor of the Republic of Montpellier, Christophe Barret noted similar age exaggerations to the men in Angoulême saying, “Recently, an isolated minor supported by the county council of Hérault had said he was 17 years old. The department had doubts. Extensive verifications have formally confirmed that he was 32 years old, in fact.”

In total, the migrants who used the forged documents were able to defraud French taxpayers to the sum of nearly a million euros in benefits they were not qualified for.

In other countries, there have also been prevalent cases of adults pretending to be children, such as in Germany where almost half of the underage migrants, 49 percent, in the city of Hamburg were shown to be adults in 2017.

The German national average was 43 percent.”

  24. Christian Dad Flees Sweden with Daughters Placed in Muslim Foster Care, Claims Asylum in Poland (breitbart, Apr 6, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/04/06/man-flees-sweden-poland-daughters-placed-muslim-foster-home/

“A Russian father and his three daughters are seeking asylum in Poland after he fled Sweden with them when they were placed in foster care with a Muslim family.

Denis Lisov’s daughters. 12-year-old Sofia, six-year-old Serafina, and four-year-old Alisa, were placed into the Swedish foster care system after his wife’s mental state had greatly deteriorated due to schizophrenia, with a court sending them to live with a Lebanese Muslim family in 2017.

Mr Lisov took exception to the fact that the girls, who are all Christian, were placed in a Muslim home, but also that they were taken 186 miles away from where he lived and he was only allowed to see them six hours a week, Polish broadcaster Polsat reports.

Earlier this week, Lisov and his daughters arrived in Warsaw and were taken into police care after it was found that the three girls had been reported as missing in Sweden.

Swedish authorities offered to take the girls back to Sweden but police did not release them. The next day, Lisov applied for asylum along with his daughters and Polish judge ?aneta Seliga-Kaczmarek ruled that the girls could stay in Poland with their father.

“The court can not issue minor children outside the territory of the Republic of Poland, where they entered under the care of their father,” the judge said.

“After hearing the minors and in the absence of a document confirming limitation of the rights of the father, the court decided that bearing in mind the broadly-understood well-being of minors, they should be left under the care of their father,” the judge added.

“Speaking to me, they indicated that they want to be with their dad, love their dad, and do not want to part with him,” she added.

Bartosz Lewandowski, the lawyer for Lisov and his family, slammed Swedish authorities after a man shouted something in Swedish to the girls before they gave their testimony to the judge. “This shows how the Swedish services manipulate children,” he said.

The case echoes a similar situation in the United Kingdom in which a five-year-old Christian girl was placed into care with an allegedly hardline Muslim family, despite protests from her family.

It was alleged that the girl was forced to remove her crucifix necklace and that Arabic, which she did not understand, was spoken around her frequently.

  25. AAUP official attacks academic freedom
By Jerome Woehrle April 5, 2019

The American Association of University Professors may support academic freedom for left-leaning academics, but it does not do so with any consistency for conservative faculty or schools.

The head of the AAUP at George Mason University, Professor Bethany Letiecq, recently endorsed a call by UnKochMyCampus for a “Congressional investigation” of its law school’s hiring of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh as an adjunct faculty member. There were no legitimate grounds for an investigation. Judges often teach at law schools. Liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer taught many classes at Harvard Law School when he was a judge on the appeals court in Boston. Yet an AAUP official found it beyond the pale for a conservative justice to teach about law. A law professor responded, “Prof. Letiecq, the law school chose to hire him, it has nothing to do with Koch, and you are advocating a gross violation of our academic freedom.” In the face of such criticism, Letiecq later deleted her foolish tweet endorsing the call for an investigation.

The AAUP has a disturbing ideological double standard. It supported intrusive public-records requests aimed at a conservative academic in Kansas, even while denouncing similar requests aimed at liberal academics in Wisconsin and Virginia. When liberals are targeted, it claims they have “academic freedom.” But when the conservative Kansas instructor was targeted, it claimed that was “an issue of academic integrity, not academic freedom.”

  26. Chicago police union votes ‘no confidence’ in Kim Foxx after Smollett charges dropped
By Daily Caller News Foundation April 5, 2019

Chicago’s police union and a group of suburban chiefs demanded Thursday that Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx resign after prosecutors dropped charges against actor and alleged hate crime hoax perpetrator Jussie Smollett.

Duane Mellema, head of the North Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police, said the chiefs voted unanimously to declare they had “no confidence” in Foxx, reported The Chicago Sun-Times. His organization represents more than 30 departments.

The Smollett case did not start the discontent for the police chiefs but instead became a symbol of the problems they had with Foxx.

The arrest stems from a March 21 phone call received by one of Omar’s staffers in which a man later identified as Carlineo allegedly said, “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a [expletive] terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her [expletive] skull.”

The threatening call was referred to Capitol Police, who investigated in coordination with the FBI.

Carlineo appeared in court on Friday and is being held pending a detention hearing on April 10, according to a statement from the Justice Department.

Authorities didn’t say when Carlineo was apprehended, according to The Associated Press, to which the suspect’s attorney declined to comment.”

  28. Greek police, migrants clash in third day of protests (abcnews, Apr 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/greek-police-migrants-clash-day-62217725

“Hundreds of protesting migrants clashed with police for a third straight day in northern Greece on Saturday, with migrants throwing rocks at officers who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Authorities say the demonstrations outside a migrant camp in Diavata have been triggered by false reports on social media that restrictions on travel to northern Europe had been lifted.

Several migrants, including children, fainted amid the clouds of tear gas Saturday. The protesters have lit fires to make the air more bearable, but blazes have also erupted from exploding stun grenades. In Athens, migrants left a main railway station after blocking trains on Friday and services resumed Saturday.

Greek officials say the migrants have been mobilized by false reports originating on social media that the road to central Europe, tightly sealed to migrants for three years, is open again, and that buses chartered by non-governmental organizations are waiting on the other side of the border with North Macedonia, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) to the north of Diavata.

“We must constantly fight the fake news,” Nikos Ragos, the migrant policy ministry’s coordinator for northern Greece, told The Associated Press.

He added that some of the migrants were now questioning the false reports, but that cybercrime police must find the source and the motive for spreading the claims…”

  29. Philippines: 1 hostage escapes, another drowns and 3rd shot (abcnews, Apr 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/philippines-hostage-escapes-drowns-3rd-shot-62213285

“An Indonesian hostage held by Muslim militants in the southern Philippines swam his way to freedom but another drowned, and a Malaysian was shot in the back while escaping, officials said Saturday.

The two Indonesians and the Malaysian separately escaped while Philippine marines were attempting to rescue them on Simusa island in southern Sulu province over the last two days, said regional military spokesman Lt. Col. Gerry Besana.

The dramatic escapes leave at least three more hostages in the custody of the Abu Sayyaf, which is blacklisted by the United States and the Philippines as a terrorist organization due to its brutal history of bombings, ransom kidnappings, extortion and beheadings. The remaining captives include a Dutch bird watcher, Elwold Horn, who was kidnapped by the militants in 2012, and two Filipinos.

One of the Indonesians, Heri Ardiansyah, was plucked from the waters by marines on board a gunboat while they recovered the body of his companion, Hariadin, who drowned. The marines gunned down three Abu Sayyaf captors who were trying to chase the two Indonesians at sea, military officials said. Like many Indonesians, Hariadin used just one name.

The marines seized four assault rifles, a grenade launcher and various ammunition from the captors of the Indonesians, military officials said.

The Malaysian, who was identified by the military as Jari Bin Abudullah, was shot by the militants when he ran away Thursday as marines tried to rescue him and engaged his captors in a gunbattle. Government forces surrounded Simusa island, where a small community thrives near mangroves, to hunt down the remaining Abu Sayyaf gunmen.

“The act of shooting the kidnap victim is indicative of the Abu Sayyaf’s hopelessness and desperateness as the militants are now surrounded by our pursuing troops,” said Sulu’s military commander, Brig. Gen. Divino Rey Pabayo Jr.

The Malaysian was airlifted to Zamboanga city, where he was in critical condition in a hospital, military officials said.

The three hostages were kidnapped off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island in December last year and taken by speedboat to Sulu, the predominantly Muslim and poverty-wracked province where a few hundred Abu Sayyaf have survived in the jungles despite frequent military offensives.

Army troops on Friday clashed with about 80 Abu Sayyaf gunmen in Sulu’s mountainous Patikul town in a fierce but brief gunbattle that left three soldiers and four militants dead and several wounded on both sides, the military said.

The Islamic State group issued a statement confirming it killed three and wounded 13 Philippine soldiers, but it said “the mujahideen returned safely to base.”

The rebels belong to an Abu Sayyaf faction led by commander Hajan Sawadjaan and aligned with the Islamic State group. Sawadjaan is the main suspect in the bombing of a Roman Catholic cathedral during a Mass that killed 23 mostly churchgoers and two suspected suicide attackers on Jan. 27 in Sulu’s capital town of Jolo.”

“The U.S.-led coalition says its Syrian allies have successfully dealt with an “incident” at a detention center in northeastern Syria which activists described as an attempted prison break by Islamic State militants.

Col. Scott Rawlinson, coalition spokesman, said Saturday all detainees were accounted for after the Syrian Democratic Forces “peacefully” dealt with the incident that broke out a day earlier. He said coalition forces supported the SDF with aerial observation.

Activists, including from Rojava Information Center, reported IS detainees in the town of Derik attempted the escape.

The Kurdish-led SDF is holding hundreds of foreign IS militants in facilities around areas they control in northeast Syria. Many more local suspects are detained separately. It was not clear if the attempted break out was among foreign or local detainees.”

  31. Afghan officials: Taliban attacks kill 7 police (abcnews, Apr 6, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/afghan-officials-taliban-attacks-kill-policemen-62216529

“Insurgents killed seven policemen and three civilians in attacks across Afghanistan on Saturday, provincial officials said.

Such attacks, blamed on the Taliban, have continued in recent months, even as the militants hold talks with U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad to negotiate an American troop withdrawal.

In a visit to Kabul earlier this week, Khalilzad lobbied for “intra-Afghan dialogue” — talks that would encompass prominent Afghan figures, government representatives and the opposition, as well as the Taliban. The U.S. envoy has held several rounds of talks with the Taliban, most recently last month in Qatar where both sides said progress was made.

But despite such talks, the Taliban continue to attack Afghan forces. The insurgents, who control half the country, refuse to talk directly with the government in Kabul, considering it a U.S. puppet.

In eastern Ghazni province on Saturday, Taliban killed three policemen and wounded seven others in attacks on security checkpoints, said a spokesman for the provincial police chief, Ahmad Khan Serat. The group claimed responsibility.

In the northern Sari Pul province, at least four policemen were killed when Taliban stormed a security checkpoint, a provincial official said.

Mohammad Noor Rahmani, head of the provincial council, said five others were wounded in the attack on the outskirts of the province’s capital city.

In eastern Nangarhar province, twin bomb blasts killed at least three civilians, said Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor. No militant groups immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks in Sari Pul and Nangarhar.”

  33. Senate Banking Chair Warns Banks Against Targeting Gun Industry
‘Business lending decisions should be based on creditworthiness, rather than politics or political pressure’

The chairman of the Senate Banking Committee warned the banking industry on Thursday that it should not attempt to restrict legal gun sales by denying financial services to members of the gun industry.

Sen. Mike Crapo (R., Idaho) sent a letter to eight of the country’s biggest banks detailing his concerns with the way some of them had begun rejecting business from certain gun companies. In the last year, several of them have attempted to restrict what kinds of guns can be sold to the public and who they can be sold to by applying financial pressure.

Bank of America announced last year it would deny services to companies that produce “military-style firearms.” Around the same time, JP Morgan Chase said it would limit its business with gun companies. Citibank went further by declaring it would not do business with any company that sells what they called “high capacity” magazines or that sells firearms to adults between the age of 18 and 21.

Wells Fargo has faced similar pressure from gun-control groups over the same period of time but has thus far bucked the trend and refused to deny business to gun companies.

Crapo said banks shouldn’t try to limit legal businesses using their financial resources.

  34. A Russian father who had his three daughters taken away from him and placed with a Muslim foster family by Swedish social services took his daughters back and fled to Poland where he’s now been given refuge.

From Sputnik, “Russian Family Flees to Poland as Sweden Gives Kids to Muslim Foster Parents”:
The Swedish social services’ decision to place three Christian girls in a Muslim Lebanese family has resulted in an international scandal, involving Poland.

After the Swedish social services attempted to place Denis Lisov’s three children in a Muslim foster family, the Russian father took his daughters and fled Sweden, unleashing a thriller-like sequence of events.

Denis Lisov came to Sweden seven years ago. In 2017, his wife fell ill, whereupon social services decided to take away his children on the grounds that he had no full employment and was therefore unable to take care of them. Instead, they were placed in a Muslim Lebanese family. Lisov’s family formally retained the custody of the children, but only had the right to see them six hours a week, the Swedish news outlet Samhällsnytt reported.

  35. UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ?eco- refugees,? ? threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.

Coastal regions will be inundated; one-sixth of Bangladesh could be flooded, displacing a fourth of its 90 million people. A fifth of Egypt’s arable land in the Nile Delta would be flooded, cutting off its food supply, according to a joint UNEP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study.
