ISIS Militants Emerge from Tunnels to Surrender (aawsat, Mar 25, 2019)

“Dozens of ISIS militants emerged from tunnels to surrender to US-backed forces in eastern Syria on Sunday, a day after their so-called “caliphate” was declared defeated.
“They are ISIS militants who came out of tunnels and surrendered today,” AFP quoted Kurdish spokesman Jiaker Amed as saying.
“Some others could still be hiding inside,” said Amed.
An AFP reporter saw dozens of people — mostly men — file out of the battered militant encampment in the remote village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border to board pickup trucks.
A spokesman for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, Jikar Azad, told Russia Today that the number of the ISIS militants who surrendered is between 60 and 90.
ISIS took large swathes of Iraq and Syria from 2014, imposing a reign of terror with public beheadings and attacks by supporters abroad – but it was eventually beaten back to Baghouz.
SDF general commander Mazloum Abdi told a victory ceremony on Saturday that ISIS was destroyed and that the group lost its ground control in its last pocket.
According to the SDF, 66,000 people left Baghouz since January, including 5,000 militants and 24,000 of their relatives.
The assault was paused multiple times as the force allowed people to evacuate from the enclave on the banks of the Euphrates.
The SDF have screened droves of people scrambling out of Baghouz in recent weeks, detaining suspected militants and trucking civilians and ISIS relatives to camps further north.
Most relatives have been crammed into the Al-Hol camp, a facility built for 20,000 people but which now shelters 72,000.”

“DUBAI: Yemen’s economy lost nearly $50bn during the four-year war against the Iranian-backed Houthis, national news agency SPA reported on Sunday.
The losses do not take into account the costs of direct and indirect damages from the destruction of infrastructure, Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Najib Al-Awaj said.
The volume of economic activity declined in the last five years and growth was negative in all sectors, Al-Awaj added.
Meanwhile, eight Houthi militants died in clashes with national resistance forces in Al-Bayda province.
The resistance forces stopped the militants from infiltrating an area on Al-Sawma directorate, a source added.”

Rocket hits home in the Sharon region

A rocket fired from Gaza early Monday morning hit a house in Moshav Mishmeret in the Sharon region.
Magen David Adom reported that seven people were injured, among them a 60-year-old woman in moderate condition with shrapnel wounds and burns, a 30-year-old woman in moderate condition with shrapnel wounds and five people who were lightly injured.
In addition, several victims were treated for shock, as well as a number of individuals who were suffered light injuries while making their way to a protected area.
The victims were evacuated to the Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba.
Earlier, a siren sounded at around 5:18 a.m. in the Sharon area. Local residents reported hearing explosions and the sound of a rocket exploding.
The IDF confirmed that one launch was identified from Gaza.
The IDF continues to look into the details of the incident. The Chief of Staff is receiving regular updates, as does Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu who is currently in Washington.…
Gaza rocket destroys home in central Israel, 7 wounded
…The attack comes 10 days after rockets were fired toward Israel’s densely populated commercial capital of Tel Aviv. The Israeli military at the time struck back in Gaza and the sides appeared to be hurtling toward another confrontation. But Gaza’s Hamas leaders said the rocket was fired accidently and calm was quickly restored.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility to Monday’s attack, but it would seem to be much harder to dismiss the latest incident as another misfire.
The outburst comes at a sensitive time for both sides. Israel is holding national elections in 15 days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is locked in a tight fight for re-election and could face heavy criticism from his opponents if he is seen as ineffective against the militants.
Netanyahu, who is currently in Washington and set to meet later in the day with President Donald Trump, announced his intention to cut the visit short in light of the “criminal” rocket fire.
“I concluded a telephone consultation with the IDF chief of staff, the head of the Shin Bet and the head of the National Security Council. There has been a criminal attack on the State of Israel and we will respond forcefully,” the prime minister said. “In light of the security events I have decided to cut short my visit to the US. In a few hours I will meet with President Trump; I will return to Israel immediately afterwards in order to manage our actions from close at hand.”
His chief opponent, Benny Gantz, called on him to return home immediately to deal with the crisis.
“The reality in which Hamas turned Israel into a hostage is unprecedented and unfathomable,” he wrote on Twitter. “Netanyahu has to pack up now and return to Israel to handle this serious escalation.”
In Gaza, Hamas has come under rare public criticism for the harsh conditions in the territory. An Israel-Egyptian blockade, combined with sanctions by the rival Palestinian Authority and mismanagement by the Hamas government have fueled an economic crisis in the territory. Residents have little desire for another war with Israel.

Just guessing of course, but Iron Dome is a game of Whack a mole which costs $1M USD every time its your turn. So its a game you have to lose even if you score a draw all the time.

Each ‘mole’ whacked spares our immediate flesh and blood. We buy time, time critical to restore population lost over the last century. Now Israel, not the USA, holds our numbers and our future. We’re viable, but only just barely.
Not even a combatant in the Gulf War, Israel was nonetheless Ground-Zero for Saddam Hussein’s Scuds. Israel’s “restraint” – as commanded by the USA – prevented escalation that might’ve rendered much of Mesopotamia an expanse of gassy glass.
Maybe Hiroshima/Nagasaki in 1991 would’ve terminated this regrettable 1400-year interlude. The cult of the Pirate might’ve gone the way of Moloch and Baal.
But at that point Israel would not have survived, not as the nation that is essential to the survival of the Jewish people in this millennium.
Though we’re better positioned now, our fight is existential. I second-guess every strategic decision up the chain of command, criticize constantly. But ultimately I must trust in G-d’s grace to grant wisdom to those in charge.
Our destiny is to fight and survive. I accept that it’ll only be a remnant, and yet that will suffice.

WHY DID THE IRON DOME NOT INTERCEPT THE ROCKET FROM GAZA MONDAY MORNING?
On Monday morning, a rocket from Gaza struck a private home in central Israel, wounding at least seven people.
Why did Israel’s Iron Dome not intercept the rocket?
Investigators at the scene told the Hebrew daily Maariv that it is estimated that the rocket fired was a missile that can reach a range of more than 100 kilometers, carrying a 125-km warhead.
The rocket is named G9 after the head of the military wing of Hamas, Ahmed Jabri, and according to Hamas it can not be intercepted by Iron Dome, since it travels on a nonlinear path.
Hamas is reporting that the missile was launched inadvertently, as the terror organization claimed earlier this month when two rockets were fired toward Tel Aviv. The Hamas sources said they believe the rocket system might have been triggered due to lightening; there was rain Sunday night in Israel.
It is unclear if the firing was really a result of poor maintenance by Hamas or a retaliation to events Sunday evening at the Keziot prison, which left two Israeli prison guards stabbed and wounded by Hamas inmates.
Palestinian media is reporting that Hamas sees the move as “fatal timing,” given the April 9 elections and the likelihood of a strong reaction by Israel to the rocket. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel will respond “with force.”
Hamas officials started evacuating from their headquarters in Gaza in preparation for an Israeli attack, according to Palestinian media.

This comes back to me regarding accidents. A Lebanese colleague told me that Israel is different from Hezbollah. When Israel bombed the wrong building by accident, he saw someone drive up soon after to deliver funds to compensate for the loss. (I assume that this took place in the early 80’s.)

According to the military, the rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip, where last week two rockets were also fired at Tel Aviv, in what was described at the time as an apparent “mistake” by the Hamas terror group.
The Iron Dome missile defense system did not appear to have been activated by the rocket attack. The military said it was still investigating the matter.

This attack on Mishmeret, located over 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Gaza Strip, was the farthest reaching rocket attack from the enclave since the 2014 Gaza war, during which projectiles reached as far north as the city of Haifa.
The distance of the attack and significant damage caused by the impact indicated that it was conducted by one of the larger terror groups in Gaza — either the Strip’s de facto rulers Hamas or the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad — who have access to the types of long-range projectiles with heavy warheads necessary for such an attack.

Leukemia survivor meets the bone marrow donor who saved her life
Wilson’s husband, Robert, was the one who made the meeting happen. For Beth’s birthday in October 2018, he surprised his wife with a trip to Germany to meet [pelvic bone marrow donor] Theine. He had already contacted Theine and asked her to send a video telling his wife the news.
“I thought, no, there’s a language barrier she didn’t understand, (because) he didn’t buy airline tickets,” Wilson said, but when she realized the trip was real she broke down in tears.
“My husband saw I was crying and said, ‘Are those happy tears?’ and I said ‘YES!'”
DKMS arranged for the women to meet at the train station in Cologne on March 14, 2019. The emotional connection between them was immediate.
“She ran up to me and she was crying and shaking,” Wilson said. “It was so sweet.”
Wilson and her husband spent a week in the country getting to know Theine’s family and culture.
“It was incredible. It was a trip of a lifetime,” Wilson said.
Asked why someone should become a bone marrow or stem cell donor, she said, “It’s such a small thing you can do to save someone’s life.”

Italy home circumcision kills child

A five-month-old boy has died after parents performed a circumcision at their home in Italy, officials say.
The baby was sent to a Bologna hospital in cardiac arrest on Friday night, but died shortly afterwards.
Authorities in the northern Reggio Emilia province have opened an investigation against the parents, who are reported to be of Ghanaian origin.
In a similar case, a two-year-old boy died after a failed circumcision at a migrant centre in Rome in December.
Some 5,000 circumcisions are performed in Italy each year but more than a third are carried out illegally, according to health charity Amsi.

Seis jóvenes de entre 15 y 20 años violaron, presuntamente, a una niña de 12 años en Azuqueca de Henares (Guadalajara) el 15 de marzo de 2018. Pese a que los hechos ocurrieron hace más de un año, no fue hasta este miércoles cuando se hicieron públicos. Primero lo adelantó el periódico El Mundo y después lo confirmó el subdelegado del Gobierno en la provincia de Guadalajara, Ángel Canales.
Uno de los presuntos agresores lleva desde entonces en prisión preventiva, comunicada y sin fianza. Del resto: tres pactaron con la Fiscalía de Menores tres años de internamiento y cinco más de alejamiento de la víctima, y los otros dos están en libertad provisional con medidas cautelares, como la prohibición de comunicación y el alejamiento de la víctima. La niña es española mientras que los agresores investigados son cinco marroquíes y un nigeriano.
El 15 de marzo de 2018, la víctima se encontraba en el parque del Lavadero de Azuqueca con unos amigos. En torno a las 13.00 horas, llegaron los jóvenes y se la llevaron en compañía de una amiga a un edificio abandonado, una antigua residencia de ancianos próxima al parque. A la amiga la soltaron «por ser mora». Sin embargo, a la víctima la violaron durante 45 minutos, según el relato de El Mundo. Ese mismo día, por la tarde, la Guardia Civil ya efectuó las primeras detenciones.
El subdelegado del Gobierno destacó que el suceso «se resolvió desde el punto de vista policial de manera rápida y eficaz y se puso a disposición judicial a los agresores» en poco tiempo. Canales también reconoció que se enteró de los hechos este miércoles ya que, cuando sucedieron, él no era el subdelegado.
Consultado por ABC, el Ayuntamiento de Azuqueca se pronunció en el mismo sentido: «Nos hemos enterado por la prensa; el alcalde (José Luis Blanco) no quiere hacer declaraciones por tratarse de una menor».
Otra cuestión es por qué la violación ha sido silenciada por las autoridades durante un año y no ha salido a la luz hasta que lo ha publicado la prensa. Cuando ocurrieron los hechos, el delegado del Gobierno en Castilla-La Mancha era José Julián Gregorio (Partido Popular). Preguntado por este periódico, tampoco ha querido decir nada al respecto.

ABC contactó igualmente con la Comandancia de la Guardia Civil de Guadalajara, que oficialmente se remitió a lo dicho por el subdelegado Canales. Sin embargo, otras fuentes manifestaron que «es habitual que, cuando hay un caso de menores, el teniente coronel Pascual Luis Segura Iborra (jefe de la Comandancia) no quiera que se informe ni siquiera al resto de agentes; solo lo saben quienes llevan la investigación».
El Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Castilla-La Mancha señaló a Efe que existe un procedimiento judicial por la presunta agresión sexual de una joven en Azuqueca. El Juzgado de Primera Instancia e Instrucción número 3 de Guadalajara está tramitando las diligencias. La fase de instrucción está prácticamente finalizada, por lo que el juez podría dictar el auto de procesamiento en breve, lo que iniciaría la fase intermedia con vistas a un futuro juicio.

“Migrants trying to reach Europe face routine rape and sexual torture throughout their journey — and especially in Libya — with men facing abuse nearly as routinely as women, according to a study based on dozens of interviews with aid workers and migrants.
The graphic study released Monday by the Women’s Refugee Council comes as Europe has blocked rescues at sea and outsourced its migration policy to Libya’s coast guard instead. With European Union funding, the Libyan coast guard retrieves migrants from the Mediterranean and returns them to detention centers nominally run by the government, where migrants say the abuse resumes.
Smugglers torture migrants and film it to extract ransom payments from their families, and to thin the number of people in their unofficial prisons, according to the study. Previous studies have found that nearly all women who cross from North Africa have been raped or sexually abused along the journey; this one found that the danger was likely nearly as prevalent among men. A mental health worker described graves filled with men with their genitals sliced off — a description corroborated by the account of a survivor of a mass mutilation.
Migrants told similarly horrific stories about rape, forced incest, and mass sexual abuse intended to humiliate detainees who had to strip naked and become either rapists themselves or victims.
According to a 20-year-old man from Guinea, “when the men came back crying, they would talk about what the guards did to them and how violent it was.”
Because the men were victimized together, they were willing to talk about it in ways that might otherwise be taboo. Mostly, they don’t talk about it. In repeated AP interviews with migrants in Europe and in Africa, Libya is the place they don’t discuss.
The area around Bani Walid is particularly notorious for its clandestine prisons, where migrants have described being held in sunless warehouses for months and even years on end while smugglers try to extract money from them to continue their journey. Last May, more than 100 migrants and refugees broke out from one of the lockups, fleeing under their captors’ gunfire. At least 15 people died and 40 were left behind, according to the aid group Doctors Without Borders. The survivors were ultimately shipped to an official Libyan detention center.
And now official detention is likely where they will end up even if they make it into the Mediterranean, due to European policy that has effectively banned rescues at sea in an effort to slow migration. The EU has spent 338 million euros ($382 million) in Libya since 2014 to stem migration, much of it on strengthening the Libyan coast guard and the detention centers.
Migrants turned back in the Mediterranean are unlikely to fare much better in official detention than they did in the warehouses, according to the study’s lead researcher, Sarah Chynoweth. United Nations staff and aid groups have limited access to the centers and Chynoweth said migrants told her than in any case “we were just too terrified to say anything.”
At one of the official prisons, a 19-year-old Nigerian woman told a health worker that women faced near constant threat of rape, and men only marginally less. Migrants bribe their way to freedom or escape if they can. “They said that if we tell in Europe what is happening in Libya, our brothers and sisters in the prison will pay,” she said, according to the study.
Chynoweth has carried out similar studies among the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Syrian refugees in the Middle East. What differs in the European context, she said, is how widespread it is, and the fact that profoundly disturbing forms of sexual torture are used for purposes of extorting ransoms — sent via video to desperate families.
“The minute people are stopped at sea, Europeans wash their hands of it,” said Hassiba Hadj-Sahraoui, the humanitarian affairs adviser for Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres.
Earlier this month, the European Union issued a statement saying the continent’s migration crisis is over, “and current levels are a mere 10 percent of what they were at their peak in 2015.” The statement cited “appalling conditions” in Libya’s detention centers as an issue, without suggesting solutions.
One of the study’s few bright points came aboard the MSF rescue ship Aquarius. On the ship, the medical team realized that men and boys appeared not to know that what they’d experienced was sexual abuse. Trained health workers decided in 2018 to emphasize free medical and psychological counseling.
As a result, the study said, 33 percent of sexual assault survivors who came forward last year on the Aquarius were male, compared with just 3 percent in 2017.
“It was about creating that safe environment, allowing the men and boys to know they’re not alone,” said Aoife Ni Mhurchu, who was a nurse on board the Aquarius at the time and specializes in working with vulnerable populations. Few migrants had any illusions that their attackers would face justice, said Ni Mhurchu, who worked in four detention centers in Libya before her time at sea.
She said few detained in Libya would dare come forward while there.
“This climate of impunity in Libya signals to this extremely vulnerable population that reporting is not only dangerous but futile,” she said.
The Aquarius is now chartered for a scientific expedition. The only people pulling migrants from the Mediterranean waters off the Libyan coast take them right back where they came from.”

“A devastating Taliban attack over the weekend on an Afghan army outpost in southern Helmand province killed 26 soldiers and seven policemen, a provincial official said Monday — casualties the country’s defense ministry has refused to disclose.
Separately, the United Nations said Monday that a NATO airstrike over the weekend in northern Kunduz province killed 13 civilians, including 10 children.
NATO did not comment on the strike and it was not immediately clear if it was related to fighting Friday on the outskirts of the city of Kunduz, the provincial capital, in which two U.S. soldiers were killed.
The attacks — and the fact they were not reported by the embattled Afghan government — underscore the challenges in efforts to resolve Afghanistan’s 17-year war, America’s longest. The Taliban stage near-daily attacks on Afghan forces, inflicting staggering casualties, even as they hold peace talks with the United States.
According to Helmand council chief, Attahullah Afghan, the attack on the army outpost took place in Sangin district on Friday. Along with 33 fatalities, he told The Associated Press at least 31 soldiers were wounded.
The Taliban claimed the attack a day later but the government remained silent. On Monday, Afghan military spokesman Nawab Shah said only that government jets had aided the besieged troops and eventually sent reinforcements to Helmand, an old Taliban heartland. He refused to discuss casualties…”
AG Barr’s letter: No conspiracy with Russia. Bigger news: No underlying predicate to even define ‘obstruction’

Attorney General William Barr has forwarded a summary of conclusions from the Mueller probe to the Senate and House Judiciary Committees. His letter with these conclusions, linked here, was forwarded on Sunday, 24 March 2019.
The principal conclusions relate to two topics: whether there was “conspiracy or coordination” with Russians to interfere in the U.S. election in 2016, and whether President Trump obstructed or attempted to obstruct justice in the investigation of that topic.
According to Barr, the Mueller report concludes that a list of identified Russians did try to affect the 2016 election, and committed crimes in doing so. The Russians have been indicted in U.S. federal court.
As to whether any Americans conspired or coordinated with Russians in this effort, Barr’s letter summarizes the conclusion as follows:

The Left continues to proceed through the five stages of grief over the Mueller report. On Friday, the day on which word of the report’s key findings was released, liberals on cable TV were overcome with anger and sadness. Yesterday, Democrats in Congress showed they had moved on to the denial stage.
On Sunday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” where he declared several times, “We know there was collusion,” even though the Mueller report says there was not.

Google Downplays Searches for News of No New Indictments in Mueller Probe
Google search is hiding auto-completed text related to the Robert Mueller special counsel investigation, according to a Washington Free Beacon analysis.
Mueller’s investigation has finished with no further indictments, the culmination of a story that has dominated the news for the better part of two years. But the most popular search engine is avoiding the topic.
Using Google search on multiple browsers and on private-browsing mode, the Free Beacon found Google search had an aversion to the search term “indictment.”
Using either “Trump” or “Mueller” as the subject, the following word “indictment” was not suggested even after spelling out most of it. For example, putting “Trump indi” into Google’s search bar does not lead to “Trump indictment” but rather to “Trump India,” “Trump India Pakistan,” Trump India tariffs,” and “Trump Indiana.”
This problem did not occur with Google’s search engine competitors, Yahoo and Bing. Those search engines suggested news about the indictments when you typed in the related words.
“As a professional data scientist with at least some expertise relating to searches and profiling, I can say with near certainty that Google should have pushed me news stories relating to this and yet I had to search on my own to find the actual results of the report,” a tech industry source told the Free Beacon.
As users spell out “indictments,” Google offered highly unusual search options besides “indictments.” One top suggestion was “Trump indicator,” which leads to pocket-sized playing dice for pinocle or bridge.
Good news for Trump doesn’t make Google’s news suggestions
Searching specifically for “Trump indictment,” the Free Beacon found Google preferred the result “Trump indictment advent calendar,” which leads to a humorous story in which indictments of Trump family members are seen as gifts around Christmastime. (The Free Beacon had not previously searched for such a calendar and it was not on our search history.)
Google was previously accused of pushing positive stories about Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has denied this kind of bias occurs in its search results, saying so repeatedly in a congressional hearing last year. Democrats, however, seemed to undermine Pichai’s message by arguing in that hearing that Google is free to suppress conservatives in its search results if it so desires. Pichai said such suppression of different views would violate the company’s “core principles,” although an executive was caught emailing about making sure Google services helped Hillary Clinton in 2016.
The company’s fidelity to principles of free expression has also come under scrutiny as it has continued to work with Xi Jinping’s autocratic regime in China. Because of severe free speech restrictions in that country, Google had been developing a special search engine “Dragonfly” that would block topics disapproved by the regime, including history about China and the Communist Party. Dragonfly was put on hold after it spawned an outcry against Google, but employees have expressed concern that it’s being developed in secret.
Domestically, the Silicon Valley giant is also dealing with pressure to have its products more strictly regulated. Democratic presidential candidate and Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren (D.) has called for breaking up major tech companies on anti-trust grounds.

An Alberta judge has ruled that a war crimes sentence for former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Omar Khadr has expired.
An eight-year sentence imposed in 2010 would have ended last October had Khadr remained in custody.
“I’m really happy with the decision today,” Khadr said outside the Edmonton courthouse Monday.
“It’s been a while but I’m happy it’s here. Right now, I’m going to just try to focus on recovering and not worrying about having to go back to prison or struggling.”

A complaint filed against Bernie Sanders’ 2020 campaign for president maintains that Sanders broke federal election laws by hiring illegal aliens for his campaign staff.
The complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation cites the Sanders campaign for hiring three illegal aliens to fill advisory positions in the campaign. The complaint claims this is a violation of laws that mean to prevent foreign influence in our elections, Fox News reported.
The Sanders campaign recently announced it had taken on Maria Belén Sisa as its deputy national press secretary. Sisa previously served on Sanders’ Latino outreach team for his 2016 campaign.
Sisa claims her parents brought her into the U.S. illegally from Argentina when she was six years old. She now claims the status as a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient. Her legal protection from deportation will expire next year.
She also recently caused an uproar by utilizing the antisemitic trope of “dual allegiance” against American Jews while defending Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar’s many antisemitic proclamations.

International petition pushes for Jacinda Ardern to get the Nobel Peace Prize
A petition started in France is circulating online for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her response to the shooting massacre in Christchurch.
Ardern has been praised around the world for her leadership, compassion and moves to change gun laws after 50 lives were lost at two mosques in Christchurch on March 15.
French poet Dr Khal Torabully, founder of the intellectual centre, House of Wisdom Fez-Granada, is behind the petition launched on Friday.
He was not familiar with Ardern before the shooting put her in the spotlight around the globe.
“Following the tragic events of Christchurch and the adequate, open and peaceful response of New Zealand Premier Jacinda Ardern, we wish to propose her as the recipient of the upcoming Nobel Peace Prize,” Torabully said.
As of Saturday morning the petition had received almost 400 signatures.
“The leadership she showed during and after the terrorist attack – she was very calm, quiet, but very firm, and that is a great combination.
“In the global context of terrorism her response was dignified and inclusive.”
Torabully said in many countries, especially in France, where he is based, there is a gap between the political elite and the people, and politicians often used tragic events for their own agendas. In contrast, Ardern acted for the general public.
“She inspired love and hope across the world. We need leaders like that.
“This is a really big step for peace in the world. I believe New Zealand can be a place where something big can happen for mankind.”
The Nobel prize is given to people who have demonstrated exceptional service to the world and who have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.
Ardern has called the mosque shootings one of New Zealand’s darkest days.
On Thursday, she announced a ban on military style, semi-automatic guns and assault rifles following the Christchurch mosque shootings, a move that has been widely commended.
Ardern has said she didn’t believe she was showing leadership. Rather, she believes she is showing humanity.
She has been a pillar of support for the Muslim community, visiting victims in hospital, and speaking at Cashmere High School, Christchurch, which lost three students.
The House of Wisdom is a public academy and intellectual centre in Baghdad, Iraq, which has worked for many years translating works from Greek and Syriac to Arabic.
Torabully founded the Moroccan and Spanish branch of the House of Wisdom in 2016 to foster inter-cultural and inter-faith dialogue between the Mediterranean and North Africa.
“We believe diversity is not a threat. It enriches people,” Torabully said.
The Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. and only three New Zealanders have been recipients previously.

“A leading representative group of Muslims in France on Monday said it is suing Facebook and YouTube for streaming live coverage of the Christchurch massacre on their platforms.
The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) allege the mass-shooting at two mosques in New Zealand was publicly livestreamed by the attacker through his Facebook profile for 17 minutes.
A few hours after the attack, footage from the stream could still be found on Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube, as well as Facebook-owned Instagram and Whatsapp.
The Guardian reports Abdallah Zekri, president of the observatory of Islamophobia at the CFCM confirmed the legal complaint.

Judge rules Omar Khadr’s sentence has expired
EDMONTON — An Alberta judge has ruled that a war crimes sentence for former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Omar Khadr has expired.
An eight-year sentence imposed in 2010 would have ended last October had Khadr remained in custody.
But the clock stopped ticking when a judge freed him on bail in 2015 pending Khadr’s appeal of his military conviction in the United States.
Chief Justice Mary Moreau says the Youth Criminal Justice Act gives judges flexibility to consider bail conditions as part of a sentence.
She told an Edmonton court Monday that, with that in mind, she ruled Khadr has served his time.
The Supreme Court of Canada had already said the punishment handed Khadr for alleged acts committed in Afghanistan when he was 15 years old was to be a youth sentence.
Khadr’s lawyer Nathan Whitling had argued earlier this year that Khadr had served more than seven years in custody and on bail.
The Crown had argued Khadr should serve the remainder of his sentence in the community.
Whitling said the appeal of the sentence in the U.S. hadn’t moved forward at all and it would be unfair to use that against his client.
Whitling also argued that the military commission that sentenced Khadr has been widely discredited by legal experts.
Khadr spent years in U.S. detention at Guantanamo Bay after he was captured and accused of tossing a grenade that killed special forces soldier Christopher Speer at a militant compound in Afghanistan in 2001.
Since his release on bail, Khadr has lived in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta., without incident. The court had eased some of his initial bail conditions, but several remained in place.
Khadr could not have access to a Canadian passport and was banned from unsupervised communication with his sister, who lives in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. He also had to notify his bail supervisor before leaving Alberta.
Moreau said all the conditions are lifted.
Khadr’s case has ignited divisive debate among Canadians over terrorism, human rights and the rule of law since it was revealed in 2017 that the federal government settled a lawsuit filed by him for a reported $10.5 million.
The payout followed a 2010 ruling by Canada’s Supreme Court that Khadr’s charter rights were violated at Guantanamo and that Canadian officials contributed to that violation.

Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Omar Khadr has completed his sentence, an Alberta judge ruled Monday.
Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Mary Moreau counted the time Khadr spent on conditional release for nearly four years as counting toward his eight-year sentence.
Outside court, Khadr said he is pleased with the decision.
“I think it’s been a while but I’m happy it’s here, and right now I’m going to just try to focus on recovering and not worrying about having to go back to prison, or, you know, just struggling,” Khadr told reporters.
His lawyer, Nate Whitling, said efforts to overturn Khadr’s U.S. convictions will continue. But the completion of his sentence will mean more freedom for his client, Whitling said.
Restrictions on his liberty ‘gone’
“All those conditions that were restricting his liberty up to this point are now gone, so for example he can apply for a passport, he can talk to his sister, he can travel around the world or around Canada without having to seek permission.”
Khadr had sought a dismissal of his U.S. military commission conviction for killing an American soldier in Afghanistan. His eight-year sentence, which was imposed in 2010, would have expired last year if he had remained in custody.
Khadr has been out on bail since 2015.
Whitling told CBC News earlier that “our position is that the court does have the authority to effectively end Mr. Khadr’s sentence now, even though technically there’s still three years and five months remaining to be served.”
The prosecution argues Canada has international obligations to see that Khadr serves his full sentence.
Khadr spent several years in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after he was captured in 2002 and accused of tossing a grenade that killed special forces soldier Christopher Speer in Afghanistan. Khadr was 15 at the time.
He was later transferred to Canada, where the Supreme Court ruled Khadr’s punishment was to be served as a youth sentence. Khadr was released on bail in May 2015 pending an appeal of his war crime convictions in the United States. Since then, he has lived in Edmonton and Red Deer without incident.
Last month, Whitling told the court Khadr’s U.S appeal hasn’t advanced “even an inch.”
Khadr received a $10.5-million legal settlement and an official apology from the Canadian government in 2017. Whitling said Khadr wants to move past the sentence and “get on with his life.”

Celebrity lawyer Michael Avenattii is being charged with wire and bank fraud, federal authorities said Monday.
A press conference is scheduled to discuss the charges against Avenatti in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
Avenatti had represented porn star Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen.
Celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti was arrested Monday on charges that he tried to extort up to $25 million from Nike by threatening to hurt that athletic apparel giant financially with negative publicity.
Avenatti also is charged in a separate federal case out of Los Angeles, where he is accused of embezzling a client’s money “in order to pay his own expense and debts,” and of “defrauding a bank in Mississippi,” prosecutors said.
Avenatti, 48, was busted in Midtown Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. by FBI agents, about 15 minutes after he tweeted that he would be disclosing a big high school and college basketball scandal “perpetrated by” Nike that he supposedly had uncovered.

President Donald Trump told reporters that it was time to investigate leftist Democrats for pushing the ongoing hoax that his campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.
“There are a lot of people out there that have done some very very evil things, very bad things. I would say treasonous things against our country,” Trump said. “And hopefully, people that have done such harm to our country, we’ve gone through a period of really bad things happening. Those people will certainly be looked at. I have been looking at them for a long time.”
The president commented on the conclusion of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation during a White House event hosting Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu.
Trump did not specifically name the people he wanted to be investigated but hinted that they had a lot to do with triggering the special counsel investigation.
“Why haven’t they been looked at? They lied to Congress. Many of them, you know who they are,” he said. “They’ve done so many evil things.”
Trump hinted that the country had to make sure that rogue forces in the FBI and the Justice Department could not bring a similar phony case against another president in the future.
“What they did, it was a false narrative, it was a terrible thing. We can never let this happen to another president again,” he said.
He also added that he supported releasing the report, but said that it was ultimately up to Attorney General William Barr.
Trump also said he believed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller acted honorably during the investigation of his campaign into possible collusion with Russia.
When one reporter asked Trump if Mueller acted honorably throughout his investigation, Trump replied, “Yes, he did.”
“It’s lasted a long time, we’re glad it’s over, its a 100 percent the way it should have been I wish it could have gone a lot quicker,” he added later.
The president ignored further questions during the meeting, focusing on his proclamation to recognize Israel’s territorial claim on the Golan Heights and his relationship with Netanyahu.
Netanyahu said that he brought a case of wine for the president and his staff to celebrate.
“I bought him a case of the finest wine … I understand you’re not a great wine drinker but could I give it to your staff?”
Trump replied, “Yes.”
Overall, the president appeared relieved.
“I will tell you I love this country, I love this country as much as I can love anything: my family, my country, my God,” he said.

The Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund forced an unprecedented lawsuit settlement on the San Diego Unified School District, which partnered with the terrorism-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations, requiring the district to shut down its discriminatory, unconstitutional “anti-Islamophobia initiative.”
The embattled CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in 2007 in an alleged criminal conspiracy to support both HAMAS and the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. In 2014 the United Arab Emirates designated CAIR a terrorist organization.
CAIR, which poses as a Muslim civil rights organization, falsely claimed that President Trump’s election caused a wave of attacks on Muslim students in the San Diego school district.
In fact, the discrimination ran the other way, against those who were not Muslim.
“CAIR’s insinuation that there are hordes of MAGA hat-wearing students prowling the schools and terrorizing Muslim students is a study in mass deception,” said Charles LiMandri, chief counsel for FCDF.

Scholar Blames Christchurch Massacre on – What Else? – Western Civilization

In the wake of the recent mosque massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, Nick Riemer, a senior lecturer in English and linguistics at the University of Sydney, offered up a suggestion for preventing more such atrocities by presumed white supremacists: stop universities from promoting Western civilization.
In a Sydney Morning Herald opinion piece titled, “After Christchurch universities have a responsibility: abandon Ramsay,” Riemer argues that if “Australian universities really want to combat Islamophobia after Christchurch, only one course is possible: abandon Ramsay immediately.” He’s referring to the controversial Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation located in the University of Sydney. The Centre, funded by Australian philanthropist Paul Ramsey with the biggest education bequest in the country’s history, is controversial because it dares “to foster and promote an interest in and awareness of Western civilization,” according to its mission statement. As former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a board member at the Centre, put it in an article at Quadrant, “The key to understanding the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation is that it’s not merely about Western civilisation but in favour of it.”
And for Riemer and the left in general, that, of course, is the problem with the Ramsey Centre. There is no community in the First World less in favor of Western civilization than leftist academics, the vast majority of whom are cultural and/or economic Marxists, multiculturalists, radical feminists, identity politics ideologues, or any combination thereof. All are committed to the deconstruction of the incomparable values, traditions, institutions, and unrivaled achievements of the West. For decades they have worked tirelessly to subvert our civilizational pride by equating the capitalist West with colonialist exploitation, the oppressive “othering” of nonwhite peoples, and the environmental degradation of the planet, among other evils. Any perspective that runs counter to their perverse viewpoint is simply demonized as white supremacism.

“It is surely unfair on women who have to compete against people who, biologically, are still men,” tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently proclaimed. “You can’t just proclaim yourself a female and be able to compete against women. There must be some standards, and having a penis and competing as a woman would not fit that standard.”
Activists blasted Navratilova as “transphobic” and years after she identified as a lesbian the tennis star was booted from the board of a LBGT nonprofit. Long before any of that happened, women who were biologically still men were competing against other women. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) deployed such athletes in the quest to show the superiority of “scientific” Communist dictatorship over the democratic nations of the West.
For example, shot putter and discus thrower Tamara Natanovna Press won three gold medals and one silver medal at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics. From 1959 to 1965 Tamara Natanovna set five world records in shot put and six in discus. In 1960, the USSR, then headed by Nikita Khrushchev, famous for his “History is on our side. We will bury you” prophecy, awarded Tamara the Order of Lenin.

Richard: This article is about Kabanaugh but it applies to President Trump also. The Mueller report says there is not evidence but the Dems aren’t accepting the report, the accusation is enough for them. They aren’t satisfied with the report saying there is no evidence of collusion/treason, they are insisting that Trump prove his innocence. Since no collusion/treason took place (at least in the Trump Campaign, there is some doubt about the Hillary Campaign and the Clinton foundation) how do you prove that it did happen when the accusers say the absence of evidence that it happened isn’t enough?
Welcome to the new legal standard the left wants to establish, their opponents have to prove they didn’t commit the crime while they are allowed to commit any crime and have the evidence ignores.
The Impossibility of Disproving an Accusation

Ignore the politics of the Kavanaugh case.
Ignore the fact that the Dem opposition decided to go with sexual assault accusations because they fit nicely with their larger message targeting a Trump nominee as a threat to feminism and abortion rights.
What we’re really seeing is the impossibility of proving or disproving an accusation when there’s no physical evidence. Add on decades to it and the impossibility becomes nearly total. Add on a well-funded system for making the accusation and it becomes devastating.
This is a problem that goes beyond Brett Kavanaugh and the political battle around him. It pervades the culture of the #MeToo movement, of campus kangaroo courts and the rest of the infrastructure of #BelieveAllWomen.
The impossibility of proving or disproving such accusations has led to an insistence that the burden of proof (for the sake of fairness) must be shifted from the accuser to the accused. Kavanaugh, like so many others, must prove he didn’t do anything wrong.
And, the only way to do that is for the accuser to name a date and place where the accused couldn’t have been, or for the accused to have always been accompanied by witnesses through that date and in that place.
Neither of those is a fair and reasonable expectation.
Add on vagueness about name and place, and it becomes all but impossible for the accused to prove his innocence.

MONTREAL GAZETTE – ‘Absolutely inappropriate’: Councillor’s Islamophobic comments spark outrage
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante called Anjou borough councillor Lynne Shand’s post about a Muslim ophthalmologist “out of line for an elected official.”
A borough councillor in Anjou is under fire for making anti-Muslim comments about being treated by an ophthalmologist who wore a hijab.
“A veiled woman … grrrrrr … if it hadn’t been an emergency I would have refused to be treated by her,” Équipe Anjou member Lynne Shand wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday.
“I am raging because this is really the Islamization of our country, we must accept everything, give them reasonable accommodations, take down our crucifix (and I’m not a believer) etc etc,” she wrote.
In further comments, Shand said she was not questioning the doctor’s competence, since “she was excellent. … I am just questioning that they are Islamicizing Quebec and soon it will be like France.”
She claimed: “I am far from being a racist.”
But she said Muslims come to Quebec to “Islamicize” it and “want to convert the planet to Islam by massive immigration and multiple births.”
Wearing a hijab “is extremist just like white supremacists,” she added.
Images of the post, which was taken down, continue to circulate on social media.
Shand’s statements come as the Coalition Avenir Québec government is on the verge of tabling a bill banning religious symbols in the public civil service.
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante denounced the comments on Twitter Sunday.

Fo Niemi, executive director of the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR), said the mayor and council of Anjou should denounce the comments and ask Shand to resign.
“It tarnishes the Anjou borough to have someone like this spewing words of hate,” he said.
As an elected official, Shand’s words carry more weight than those of a private individual, he noted. “These words not only hurt, but put women who wear the hijab in jeopardy.”
Imam Hassan Guillet said the fact that an elected official was bold enough to air those views publicly raises questions about how many people secretly agree.
“It’s the tip of the iceberg,” he said.
“If somebody who’s in a diverse city like Montreal says it, and if an elected official says it, it means we’ve reached a level of danger which forces all of us, elected and non-elected people, to put an end to this speech of hate and discrimination and xenophobia and Islamophobia.”
Shand’s comments disprove Premier François Legault’s claim that Islamophobia is not a problem in Quebec, Guillet said.
“I invite Mr. Legault to see these comments for himself,” he said.
In January, Legault ruled out creating a day against Islamophobia, saying: “I don’t think there is Islamophobia in Quebec, so I don’t see why there would be a day devoted to Islamophobia.”
The next day, he partially backtracked, saying Islamophobia exists but is not widespread.
In February, the deputy mayor of Gatineau, Nathalie Lemieux, was criticized for praising Legault’s stance and saying it was normal to be afraid of immigrants since they “did bad things with their trucks.” She later apologized and stepped down as deputy mayor but remained on city council, from which she took a six-week leave of absence.
Shand, a member of Anjou Mayor Luis Miranda’s Équipe Anjou, described herself in an election profile as a trilingual artist who had lived in the borough since 2004 and was the daughter of a Scottish immigrant.
In an interview on the TVA network Sunday, Shand stood by most of what she had said on Facebook, but added that she had not expressed herself well in the post because she was tired and not feeling well.
Being treated by a doctor who wore a hijab “offended me because I could not refuse,” she said. “It’s putting religious right in my face.”
She said the doctor’s hijab bothered her because “it’s in a public place and I’m against ostentatious religious signs in public places.”
Shand said she had nothing against religion but thought that police officers, judges, lawyers, doctors and nurses should not be allowed to wear religious signs.
However, she reiterated the doctor’s care was excellent and said she apologized to anyone who was hurt by her comments.
Late Saturday night, she changed her Facebook cover photo to the statement: “False people have an image to maintain. Authentic people don’t care.”
Miranda told TVA he disagreed with Shand’s views and had asked her to apologize. He did not return a call to the Montreal Gazette.
