Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

    Breaking Wind at the Leading Edge of Technology or Hotshot Jet Jocks See Nasa Shot up the Schlierening Curve

    Shockwaves prong Edwards as Armstrong gets headstrong about superstrong ailerons.

    NASA has successfully tested an advanced air-to-air photographic technology in flight, capturing the first-ever images of the interaction of shockwaves from two supersonic aircraft in flight. The images, originally monochromatic and shown here as composite colored images, were captured during the fourth phase of Air-to-Air Background Oriented Schlieren flights, or AirBOS, which took place at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. The flight series saw successful testing of an upgraded imaging system capable of capturing high-quality images of shockwaves, rapid pressure changes which are produced when an aircraft flies faster than the speed of sound, or supersonic. Shockwaves produced by aircraft merge together as they travel through the atmosphere and are responsible for what is heard on the ground as a sonic boom. The system will be used to capture data crucial to confirming the design of the agency’s X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology X-plane, or X-59 QueSST, which will fly supersonic, but will produce shockwaves in such a way that, instead of a loud sonic boom, only a quiet rumble may be heard. The ability to fly supersonic without a sonic boom may one day result in lifting current restrictions on supersonic flight over land.

    • Canopy and cockpit armor
    • Display and instrumentation consoles
    • Weapon system controls and communications

    To be sure there is a lot more than just that. There are vehicle performance limitations imposed by the presence of a human pilot. It’s not just high G loads but maximum accelerations and turning speeds which must be constrained because, pressure suit or not, the pilot will black out due to blood pooling away from the brain.

    Hypersonic UAV drones will be capable of evasive maneuvers and erratic jinking that current airframes (and flyers) simply cannot withstand. Enhanced fuel efficiency due to streamlining and trans-sonic intake conductance, along with expanded payloads (weapons, detection & reconnaissance, stealth measures, telemetry) are just part of the advantages. The analysis of all these parameters is assisted by Schlieren imaging.

    Once the human factor is subtracted, between-sortie turnaround intervals will optimize, as will general service and periodic maintenance routines. Elimination of high-risk, resource intensive S&R (Search & Rescue) crew recovery missions will be reduced as well.

    Speaking of stealth, with minimized radar cross-section (e.g., no cockpit excrescence) and the ability to elude passive (i.e., non-emitting) sensing systems that scan incoming optical, acoustic or EMF spectra all will be significantly augmented. This will enhance mission success rates and, theoretically, reduce stress-related airframe degradation over time.

    Trust me, this isn’t about enabling Concorde service at your local airport.

    From: NASA Captures First Air-to-Air Images of Supersonic Shockwave Interaction in Flight
    March 5, 2019

    The images were captured from a NASA B-200 King Air, using an upgraded camera system to increase image quality. The upgraded system included the addition of a camera able to capture data with a wider field of view. This improved spatial awareness allowed for more accurate positioning of the aircraft. The system also included a memory upgrade for the cameras, permitting researchers to increase the frame rate to 1400 frames per second, making it easier to capture a larger number of samples. Finally, the system received an upgraded connection to data storage computers, which allowed for a much higher rate of data download. This also contributed to the team being able to capture more data per pass, boosting the quality of the images.

    In addition to a recent avionics upgrade for the King Air, which improved the ability of the aircraft to be in the exact right place at the exact right time, the team also developed a new installation system for the cameras, drastically reducing the time it took to integrate them with the aircraft.

    “With previous iterations of AirBOS, it took up to a week or more to integrate the camera system onto the aircraft and get it working. This time we were able to get it in and functioning within a day,” said Tiffany Titus, flight operations engineer. “That’s time the research team can use to go out and fly, and get that data.”

    While the updated camera system and avionics upgrade on the B-200 greatly improved the ability to conduct these flights more efficiently than in previous series, obtaining the images still required a great deal of skill and coordination from engineers, mission controllers, and pilots from both NASA and Edwards’ U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School.

    Using the schlieren photography technique, NASA was able to capture the first air-to-air images of the interaction of shockwaves from two supersonic aircraft flying in formation. These two U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School T-38 aircraft are flying in formation, approximately 30 feet apart, at supersonic speeds, or faster than the speed of sound, producing shockwaves that are typically heard on the ground as a sonic boom. The images, originally monochromatic and shown here as colorized composite images, were captured during a supersonic flight series flown, in part, to better understand how shocks interact with aircraft plumes, as well as with each other.

    In order to capture these images, the King Air, flying a pattern around 30,000 feet, had to arrive in a precise position as the pair of T-38s passed at supersonic speeds approximately 2,000 feet below. Meanwhile, the cameras, able to record for a total of three seconds, had to begin recording at the exact moment the supersonic T-38s came into frame.

    “The biggest challenge was trying to get the timing correct to make sure we could get these images,” said Heather Maliska, AirBOS sub-project manager. “I’m absolutely happy with how the team was able to pull this off. Our operations team has done this type of maneuver before. They know how to get the maneuver lined up, and our NASA pilots and the Air Force pilots did a great job being where they needed to be.”

      • Frankly, this is typical of how parties recruit.

        Either a casting call, or they approach individuals they think will fill the role.

        I, myself, have been approached many times by multiple parties, asking me to run for a political office – with all expenses covered, advisers provided…municipally, provincially and federally. By different parties.

        Turned them all down – for different reasons, at different points in my life, because I would not have been able to fulfill my duties to my electorate…for different reasons at different times, but due to being honest about my limitations.

        Yet, this does not negate how these things are done: groups of people willing and able to raise the funds for running an election campaign will use any means at their disposal to find a candidate that espouses their political views, and will recruit and work to elect them. This is very much par for the course…not a ‘new thing’.

        Perhaps the phrasing is a bit more brazen, but not the methodology.

    Gambino crime boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali was assassinated in front of his Staten Island home Wednesday night in a stunning gangland hit that recalled some of the most infamous Mafia killings in city history.

    • Syria: More militants surrender to SDF near Baghouz

      Footage filmed on Thursday shows what the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) described as Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants and their family members leaving their last stronghold near Baghouz, Syria.

      ‘A large number’ of injured men, women and children were filmed being helped up a mountainside.

      This follows heavy bombardments on Baghouz by coalition forces overnight.

      The head of the SDF’s press office in northern Syria, Mustafa Bali, said on Twitter that around 1,300 IS fighters and their families surrendered on Thursday.

      The attack on IS’s final stronghold has been periodically paused since it began on March 1, to allow thousands of civilians, many of them reportedly wives and children of IS fighters, to leave.

    “PAKISTAN has banned Indian film and television amid growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries.

    Last month Pakistan shot down two Indian warplanes which had crossed into its side of Kashmir airspace. They then launched air strikes at six targets in Indian-administered Kashmir, Pakistani military confirmed. This occurred a day after an Indian aircraft launched air raids on Pakistani territory.

    Since 1947 the two countries have experienced tensions but a common ground in the name of Bollywood has survived.

    However, Pakistan’s Association of Film exhibitors has said they were banning the release of all Bollywood films in March.

    The top court in Pakistan then ruled that no Indian content could be broadcast on local television.

    The ban also covers Indian adverts, soap operas and films.

    The Supreme Court judge who imposed the ban said: “Who would want to watch Indian content when India is intruding the country’s boundaries?”

    Student Aqsa Khan told the BBC: “They are imposing war on us, how can we let their movies and dramas get released in Pakistan?”

    For some Pakistani’s the love for Indian content has inspired them to pursue studies in film…”

  21. Republican Georgia Rep. Doug Collins on Thursday released a transcript of former FBI counterintelligence official Peter Strzok’s congressional testimony from June 2018.

    This is the third transcript of testimony Collins released within the past week. Collins released Justice Department official Bruce Ohr’s testimony March 8. He released two days’ of testimony Tuesday given by Lisa Page, a former FBI lawyer who exchanged anti-Trump text messages with Strzok.

    Strzok was fired from the FBI on Aug. 13, 2018, over the texts, many of which showed he and Page disparaging then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign. (RELATED: FBI Officials Discussed ‘Insurance Policy’ To Prevent Trump Presidency)

    Strzok served as the lead investigator on the Hillary Clinton email investigation and “Crossfire Hurricane,” the counterintelligence investigation into whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russia.

    “Emergency services found 18 illegal migrants in the back of a lorry following a random stop on a Kent motorway.

    The German truck was pulled over on Wednesday night and Kent police confirmed 18 people were in the back of the lorry.

    The men and women were assessed by paramedics on the side of the road before being taken away in minibuses and ambulances.

    The lorry was heading west towards London when it was pulled over by Kent police in a random stop.

    The vehicle had the markings of the German haulage firm, Gesuko, which is based in Hauneck.

    Police, paramedics and Border Force were at the scene on the M26 near Brands Hatch in Kent and the air ambulance was also on standby.

    The motorway slip road was closed to traffic while emergency services dealt with the group.

    Operation Stack was in place on the M20 and large sections of the motorway were closed after delays at the Dover Channel crossings.

    An eyewitness said: ‘They were all sitting on the side of the road after being taken off the back of the lorry.

    ‘You could see some food in the back which they must’ve been eating on their journey.

    ‘The paramedics treated some on the side of the road, they were giving them loads and loads of water.

    ‘The men and women all looked either North African or Middle Eastern.'”

    “Hussein Zidane raised his six children on his farm in Waraq, a rural island in the Nile just a few miles from the centre of Cairo.

    In an earlier age, the 46-year-old farmer might have been celebrated for having so many children to help him tend the land.

    But today the Egyptian state is trying desperately to stop families from getting as big as Mr Zidane’s.

    With the country’s population to due to hit 100 million people later this year, Egyptian authorities have launched the “Two Is Enough” campaign to try to convince people to have no more than two children.

    The campaign was launched at the direction of the Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s authoritarian president, who has warned that the dangers of overpopulation are the second greatest threat to his country after terrorism.

    The strains are already evident as Egypt has 40 per cent less water than it needs for a population of its size, while a battered economy struggles to provide decent jobs for the millions of young people entering the work force each year.

    A live population clock on the website of Egypt’s statistics authority shows how the public is growing by 2.5 million people each year. Projections show the country could top 150 million by 2050.

    While Egypt has traditionally been seen as a bulwark of stability in the Middle East, Western governments note warily if the Arab world’s largest country cannot find a sustainable way to support its people it could lead to large scale migration towards Europe.

    The average Egyptian woman has 3.3 children, compared to a figure of 1.8 in the UK, according to the World Bank. While that is half of what it was in 1960, the Two Is Enough campaign aims to drive it down further.

    The campaign, which was launched last year, is built on a combination of carrots and sticks. Workers go door-to-door extolling the virtues of small families and clinics provide free contraception. But the government is also threatening to cut off subsidies to families for any children they have beyond two.

    Mr Zidane was sceptical that the state’s efforts would have much impact on people’s behaviour. “Poverty is what will control the birth rate,” he said. “If someone has the financial ability he will have children regardless of what the government says. But if he can’t then he won’t.”

    He pointed out that his own 21-year-old daughter has only one child because she and her husband could not afford more.

    The Two Is Enough campaign is running up against a conservative Egyptian culture where 80 per cent of women do not work and a significant portion marry young, especially in rural areas. Condoms remain taboo and abortion is illegal.

    Nahla Tawab, country director of the Population Council, an international NGO, said a key factor in controlling the birth rate will be if more women stay in education and find employment.

    “If woman are at home not working what else are they going to do other than have children?” she said. “What the government needs to do more of is create employment opportunities for women – help women stay in school, complete secondary education and then move onto university.”

    Among the most urgent questions for Egypt is finding enough water to support its people. According to UN standards, a population of Egypt’s size needs around 100 billion cubic meters of water. Today, it only has around 60 billion cubic meters – a 40 per cent deficit.

    That shortage is already wreaking havoc on farmers who cannot find enough clean water for their crops and are being force to reuse damaging waste water. By one estimate, Egypt is losing 55 acres of farmland a day because of the shortages.

    Ezzat Tawfik, 53, is among the farmers already feeling the impact. His 10 acre plot is in Faiyoum, a rural area south of Cairo, at the end of a long canal bringing water from the Nile.

    Starting in 2011, Mr Tawfik found that in the summer months there was no water left in the canal by the time it reached his cotton fields. “The land starts suffering. For three months there is no water coming at all.”

    The shortages have damaged his business but Mr Tawfik said he could not abandon his farm. “We inherited this from our fathers and we have no choice but keeping it going. It’s not like I have a failed project and can shut it down. It’s our way of life.”

    Climate change will exacerbate the water shortages and Egypt is also deeply concerned about Ethiopian plans to build a vast dam upstream in the Nile, diverting even more water away from Egypt.

    Mr Sisi has said he considers plans for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam a threat to Egypt’s national security and hinted that he could take military action to preserve Egypt’s share of the water.

    “This situation may take us to the first water war in the world,” said Nader Noureldeen, professor of water resources.

    There will be no single solution to Egypt’s water crisis but a starting point would be updating leaking water infrastructure and reforming wasteful irrigation practices. One initiative so far encourages Muslim worshippers to use less water when they wash before prayers.

    The EU has given Egypt €450 million (£393 million) in grants since 2007 and much of it has been aimed at water security.

    “Water is life for Egypt and it’s our priority to be engaged in water sector,” said Ivan Surkoš, the EU ambassador in Cairo. “We are supporting sustainable social economic development to contribute to prosperity and stability here and not create another zone of instability. Egypt is reaching 100 million people so this is a real power in the region and is so close to Europe.”

    Egypt’s problems are many as it tries to curb the birthrate and find enough water to survive. But analysts say there is no reason that a combination of technology and smart policy could not put the country on a sustainable track.

    “It’s very easy to be extremely down on Egypt’s resource future but as the grave as the situation might look there is every potential to resolve it,” said Peter Schwartzstein, non-resident fellow at the Centre for Climate and Security think tank in Washington. “It will just require a degree of care, attention, and long-term thinking that has been in quite supply shortage so far.”

    Figures released by Eurostat on Tuesday revealed that there were 5.075 million babies born in the union in 2017, compared with 5.148 million in 2016 with the total fertility rate standing at 1.59 births per woman — down from 1.60 on the year before and well below the 2.1 births per woman needed to maintain a population.

    In terms of individual countries, France had the highest fertility rate at 1.90 births per woman, followed by Sweden (1.78), Ireland (1.77), Denmark (1.75), and the United Kingdom (1.74).

    The lowest fertility rates were in Malta (1.26), Spain (1.31), Italy and Cyprus (both 1.32), Greece (1.35), Portugal (1.38), and Luxembourg (1.39).

    These figures reveal that not one of the 28 European Union countries came close to replacement level in 2017.

    Of the five million plus births that year, 45 per cent where for a first child, while just over one third (36 per cent) were a second child, while fewer than one-in-five (19 per cent) were of a third or subsequent child.

    The average age of first-time mothers is also getting slightly older, at 29.1 compared to 29 years old in 2016.

    Countries where the mean age for a first-time mother is less than 27 tend to be concentrated in eastern Europe, including Latvia, Bulgaria, Romania, while the oldest first-time mothers tend to be concentrated in the south (Italy, Spain, and Greece), and Luxembourg, and the Republic of Ireland.

    Proponents of mass migration have argued that the so-called ‘demographic timebomb’ of Europe can only be solved with importing peoples from the Global South, with that solution being grasped with both hands by Western and Northern European countries like Sweden and Germany, where mass migration alone now accounts for population growth.

    The belief that opening the borders to mostly unskilled migrants will answer the question of where a new workforce will come from to pay the social security of the older generation has been condemned as a Ponzi Scheme, as migrants themselves will grow old and need social care, and evidence showing that the vast majority of migrants arriving in some countries are still unemployed.

    There is also the initial financial costs for care and integration of new arrivals to consider, as well as the social costs of rising terrorism and crime.

    Eastern and Southern Europe have moved towards a different approach in recent years, however, approving government policies that support Europeans to grow their own families.

    Last month, conservative prime minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán introduced several family-friendly government initiatives to boost natural population growth in his country, including a loan of ten million Forints (£27,385/$35,230) to every woman under 40 who marries for the first time, with the loan completely written off after the birth of her third child, and women who have raised four or more children being exempt from paying income tax for life.

    Similar measures were introduced in Poland in January, when the parliament approved a special pension for mothers and grandmothers who have raised four or more children as a means of showing, what Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called, “gratitude and respect” to women who have “devoted their lives to bringing up children.”

    When announcing the proposals in February, Prime Minister Orbán stated that his country would choose family over mass migration, saying, “In our minds, immigration means surrender… If we resign ourselves to the fact that we are unable to sustain ourselves even biologically, by doing so we admit that we are not important even for ourselves.”

    Italy’s populist Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who launched a Ministry of Family and whose League party floated the idea of giving land to families expecting their third child, shared a similar sentiment last year when he said, “A country which does not create children is destined to die.”

    “A survey has revealed that around three-quarters of the Syrians who travelled to the Netherlands as asylum seekers have no plans to ever return to their country.

    The survey of 848 Syrian nationals residing in the Netherlands was taken by current affairs television programme EenVandaag and found that the vast majority said they would not consider returning due to the danger and insecurity in the country, WNL reports.

    Even though the Islamic State terror group has been almost totally wiped out by the coalition, those surveyed said they still did not want to return, citing fear of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

    The 75 percent said that regardless of what happens to Syria in the future they have no plans to ever go back and wish to remain in the Netherlands for the rest of their lives, arguing that they have better access to work and to freedom of expression.

    Despite having better access to work, the vast majority of refugees in the Netherlands remain without jobs according to the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) which revealed last year that a mere 15 percent of refugees allowed to work actually held a job.

    By far and large, most refugees in the Netherlands have lived and continue to live off of welfare, some for at least two and a half years.

    The figures match similar unemployment numbers among refugees in Germany and a large gap between the unemployment rate of migrants and natives in Sweden.

    The lack of jobs has had a knock-on effect and has increased the total number of low-income households in the Netherlands with the government specifically noting that third world immigration, particularly Syrian refugees, has been a driving force in the increase.

    The Syrian population in the Netherlands with a temporary residency permit has now totalled around 70,000 people, although 11,500 of them will see their permits expire this year.”

    The House Oversight Committee is not taking any legal action against Michael Cohen, following contradicting reports about a request for a presidential pardon.

    Chairman Elijah Cummings made the announcement on Wednesday.

    This comes after Cohen’s lawyers sent him a letter, saying Cohen was accurate when he said he never asked for a pardon after he left the president’s joint defense team in June 2018.

    Cohen, however, has admitted his lawyers discussed a pardon with President Trump’s attorney before June 2018, because the president “dangled the possibility of pardons” among his confidantes.

    According to a new report, North Korea is continuing to secretly advance its nuclear program. On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council’s panel on North Korea said Pyongyang is building and testing nuclear and ballistic missile devices at civilian facilities.

    Experts have said activities at those facilities are supported by massive smuggling of oil in defiance of international sanctions.

    Previously, reports claimed Pyongyang’s military is restoring its nuclear testing grounds.

    Syrian scholar Firas Al-Sawwah said in a March 3, 2019 interview on Al-Hurra TV (U.S.) that the Al-Aqsa Mosque that was mentioned in the Quran was not in Jerusalem, and that the caliph Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan had decided to build a holy place in Jerusalem and call it Al-Aqsa.

    He said that a general Arab-Muslim cultural revival that would include a critical review of Arab and Muslim history is necessary.

    Al-Sawwah also said that the hadiths should be critically examined to determine which ones a true and false, and he recalled having laughed in eighth grade when the teacher taught the class the hadith about the trees and rocks calling Muslims to kill Jews hiding behind them.

    He explained that the class laughed because they had been “raised on modern thought” and it made no sense to them that trees or rocks would speak.

  35. France: European Parliament votes to suspend Turkey accession talks

    Dutch Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Kati Piri held a press conference in Strasbourg on Wednesday, as the parliament’s voted to formally suspend the accession talks with Turkey.

    A total of 370 MEPs voted in favour of suspending Turkey’s EU accession talks. From them, 109 voted against, while 143 abstained from voting.

    In the lead up to the vote, Piri said things had gone “from bad to worse” for Turkey in recent years. She cited the post-coup crackdown on journalists and opposition members in 2016, the 2017 constitutional reforms, as well as the police’s use of rubber bullets against women during the 2019 International Women’s Day protests in the country.

    ‘”The European Parliament has tried over the years to put pressure on the Turkish government but our calls so far have fallen on deaf ears both in Ankara, and to be honest, also within EU capitals. It seems that our European leaders only react when European nationals are involved,” said Piri, who works as the Turkish rapporteur of the European Parliament.

    Commenting the vote, Piri said she was against the proposal to suspend accession talk. “I truly hope that one day in the future, that door will be able to open again, when Turkey is a different country than it is today,” she said.

    “The question is rather, whether the European Union is willing to come up with a strategy trying to prevent Turkey’s further drift away from the West and to maintain a connection with the democrats in Turkey. And my assessment is that so far our European leaders have bitterly failed in doing so,” she added.

    Every few weeks, some political or national figure demands a national conversation about race. (Most recently, Senator Kamala Harris insisted, “We have not had these honest discussions about race.”)

    What does a conversation about race mean? Invariably, an indictment of the fundamental unfairness of our country, the historical roots of racism in white supremacy, and the national guilt of white people.

    Or, to put it more simply, why Senator Kamala Harris deserves to be in the White House.

    We don’t have national conversations about anti-Semitism because the problem can’t be narrowed down to an easily blamed demographic. The Democrats invariably try to blame anti-Semitism on the usual suspects, white male Republicans living more than two hundred miles from a Starbucks, but the largest toll of violent anti-Semitic attacks tend to fall on New York City’s black neighborhoods.

    There is no single demographic for anti-Semitism. It’s a bigotry blasted out by Farrakhan supporters in Crown Heights, but it’s also harbored by white Elizabeth Warren supporters in Chelsea. Rep. Ilhan Omar is an immigrant from Somalia, a country with no Jews, but picked up the bigotry from Arab Muslims. And some of the worst anti-Semites aren’t black or white, Muslim or Christian, they’re Jewish in origin.

    Even on the internet, some of the most militant anti-Semitic figures came from Jewish families.

    In a new video, an Islamic State (ISIS) spokesman named Abu Abd al-Azeem, “whose speech,” noted Reuters, “is peppered with Koranic recitations,” complained about the bad rap his cuddly group has gotten. “Why are we bombed by planes,” he asked plaintively, “why do all the nations of the unbelieving world come together to fight us?…What is our guilt? What is our crime? We (just) wanted to apply the sharia of Allah.”

    Indeed. And now, in light of that statement, here are some questions that mainstream counterterror analysts should ponder deeply: did the Islamic State actually apply Sharia? ISIS is routinely dismissed as un-Islamic, but what exactly did they do that cannot be backed up by specific citations from the Qur’an and Hadith? And if the Islamic State just wanted to apply Sharia, and Sharia is entirely benign and compatible with Western values, as Western analysts also regularly insist, then why did the whole world regard the Islamic State as a criminal entity that must be destroyed? Why was it not welcomed into the family of nations, alongside other Sharia regimes including Saudi Arabia and Iran?

    “The number of first-time asylum applications in the EU has fallen to 580,845, Eurostat has reported. At the height of the migrant movements into Europe, four years ago, asylum applications in the EU exceeded 1.2 million.

    European Union states received 580,845 first-time asylum applications in 2018, about half the number received during the 2015 migrant crisis, the EU’s statistics agency reported Thursday.

    The 2018 figure marks an 11 percent fall from 2017.

    The number of pending asylum applications in the EU totalled 878,600 at the end of 2018, down slightly from 927,000 a year earlier.

    The findings confirm a downward trend of people entering the EU through irregular crossings. The EU border and coast guard agency Frontex estimated around 150,000 people made this type of voyage in 2018, the lowest number in five years.

    The number of asylum applications drastically increased in 2015 and 2016, when conflicts in Syria and other Middle Eastern nations escalated and caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee.

    At the peak of the migrant movements, the number of first-time asylum seekers in the EU exceeded 1.2 million. It was Europe’s biggest spike in migration since World War II.

    The countries of origin for first-time asylum seekers in the EU in 2018 were:

    Syria with 80,920 applications
    Afghanistan 40,990 applications
    Iraq 39,595 applications
    Together, the three nations accounted for almost 30 percent of the total number of people claiming asylum in Europe in 2018.

    Germany remains prime destination

    In percentage terms, the migrants’ destinations in 2018 were:

    Germany – 27.9 percent of migrants
    France – 19 percent
    Greece – 11.2 percent
    Spain – 9.1 percent
    Italy – 8.5 percent
    Rome, which now has an anti-immigrant party sharing power in a coalition government, recorded the biggest drop in applications last year.

    Some politicians and judges in Germany have complained that asylum applications are not made in their first EU state of entry. Earlier this month Dusseldorf Administrative Court President Andreas Heusch complained “Neither European nor national asylum law works. The whole system is dysfunctional,” he said.

    “We do not even manage to return asylum seekers in the border town of Niederkrüchten just a few kilometres to the Netherlands or to Belgium within six months,” Heusch said. “Our decisions are without consequences.”

    Lowest application rates

    Both Hungary and Poland currently have right-wing, populist parties in government, and Hungary has taken a hardline approach to migration and asylum. They stood out with the lowest number of asylum applications per million residents in 2018:

    EU-wide average was 1,133 applicants per million population
    Hungary received 65 applicants per million population
    Poland received 63 applicants per million population”

    The media portrayal of Denmark as a country hostile and inhumane to migrants is misleading, if not completely false.

    One reason for the inaccurate picture is that it is painted by journalists’ political bias. Another is that trustworthy official Danish statistics on the country’s immigration problem are both difficult to find and even harder to interpret. A further problem is a lack of reliable research, at best; and purposely distorted data, at worst.

    The following breakdown illustrates that rather than being more relatively free of the consequences of mass migration than other European countries in general, and Scandinavian countries in particular, Denmark is in a state of societal collapse. She is recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for service to Canada. Raheel bridges the gap between East and West, promoting cultural and religious diversity for which she has appeared in print and on TV and radio numerous times. A fervent advocate for gender equality, Raheel is the first Muslim woman in Canada to lead mixed gender prayers. In her pursuit for human rights, she speaks regularly at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

    Q: In his account of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides wrote, “It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable.” Harvard scholar Graham Allison subsequently applied the term “Thucydides Trap” to describe Sino-American relations. Following a meeting with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping said: “There is no such thing as the so-called Thucydides Trap in the world. But should major countries time and again make the mistakes of strategic miscalculation, they might create such traps for themselves.” BESA poses the question: Can China and the US peacefully coexist?

  50. More about the murder of Cynthia R. in Worms, Germany (seems the correct spelling is Syndia btw).
    The murderer arrived in Baden-Württemberg in 2017. Before this murder he already had a criminal record in Germany which included drugs offenses, assault, threats and theft.
    His application had been rejected but he was not deported (he had a “Duldung”). Two days before the murder a new deportation order had been given.
    Authorities are now looking into his real name – Ahmed is one of many aliases, he also claimed different origins at different times.
    His 21yo gf, who was a nurse, was stabbed in her bed. She had 15 stabbing- and slicing wounds.

    Ahmed was violent during the first court hearing, the article speculates he may go for an insanity plea and the tantrum is part of the plan. All in the interest of staying in Germany, presumably.

    The man who yelled Allahu Akhbar during the wake is a 29yo Pakistani refugee.
