Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. BREAKING: Indian jets BOMB targets in Pakistan – Pakistani airforce SCRAMBLES in response (express, Feb 26, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1092439/Pakistan-fury-India-bombs-militant-camps-Kashmir-bombing-jets

“INDIAN warplanes have bombed suspected militant camps inside Pakistan, following a suicide attack which killed at least 40 paramilitary soldiers last week, according to the country’s military.

The Pakistani airforce scrabbled its own jets in response.

The attack took place over the line of control, which separates the Indian and Pakistani controlled sections of Kashmir.

On Twitter Indian Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat commented: “Air Force carried out aerial strike early morning today at terror camps and completely destroyed it.”

There are no reports thus far of any casualties.

Pakistan’s military said Indian military aircraft had crossed into its territory in the disputed Kashmir region and “released a payload”.

Twelve Mirage 2000 warplanes dropped 1,000kg bombs on militant training camps according to sources speaking to The Times of India.

The paper reports that the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammed armed groups were targeted.

The Indian Air Force has been placed on high alert across the border with Pakistan in case of any response.

Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has called an emergency meeting in Islamabad to discuss the situation.

However Pakistan, which denies the existence of militant camps in its territory, said open ground was hit after its airforce intervened.

Military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor tweeted: “Indian aircraft intruded from Muzafarabad sector.

“Facing timely and effective response from Pakistan Air Force released payload in haste while escaping which fell near Balakot.

“No infrastructure got hit, no casualties.”

  2. Syria war: Jihadist takeover in rebel-held Idlib sparks alarm (BBC, Feb 26, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-47252257

“The Islamic State group may have lost all its territory in Syria but a rival jihadist group has been making gains in the last remaining opposition stronghold in the north of the country – and it has got residents nervous.

In a dramatic takeover last month, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) swept through towns and villages in Idlib province, as well as adjoining parts of Aleppo and Hama.

The group – which was known as al-Nusra Front before it broke off formal ties with al-Qaeda three years ago – expelled some rebel factions and forced others to surrender and recognise a “civil administration” it backs.

With almost 20,000 fighters in its ranks, HTS wants to impose strict Islamic rule in areas it controls. Civilians say the group’s practices are similar to those of IS.

    ‘Black is imposed on us’
Hiba, a civil society worker in her mid-20s based in western Aleppo countryside, worries that women like her will be deprived of their rights, similar to what IS did in areas it captured.

International aid organisations have already suspended their work fearing reprisals by the group.

“This will affect many women who work with these organisations, and who earn their living and are empowered by the work,” Hiba warned.

Most residents of areas that have fallen to HTS do not support the group’s agenda.

“This is what we have been facing for the past eight years; someone who opposes us and tries to exterminate us,” said Issam Khatib, who runs a Turkey-based civil society organisation that operates in western Aleppo.

Mohammed, who lives in the same area, told the BBC that HTS did not represent the people and was not welcome there.

“This black colour is imposed on us,” he said, in reference to the extremist agenda the group holds.

“We really don’t know who supports them; they have a power where no-one is able to face them.”

    Will Turkey step in?
The HTS takeover has also jeopardised the truce brokered by Turkey and Russia that has spared the 2.9 million civilians living in the enclave – including close to one million children – from a bloody government assault and a humanitarian disaster.

The truce deal established a demilitarised buffer zone running along the front line to separate opposition and government forces. Rebels were required to pull their heavy weapons out of the zone, and jihadists were told to withdraw altogether.

Residents are worried that the government, which is supported by Russia and Iran, will use the jihadists’ gains as justification to resume their bombardment and eventually launch a full-scale ground offensive.

There have been sporadic clashes along the front line since the truce began in September. But in recent weeks Idlib has been shaken by government shelling that has killed more than a dozen civilians, as well as a number of bomb attacks blamed on IS sleeper cells.

Some residents are pinning their hopes on Turkey to intervene to save the truce and curb HTS’s power.

One Turkish newspaper close to the government has reported that 15,000 HTS fighters are willing to join the so-called National Army, a force created by Turkey in an attempt to unify the opposition in north-western Syria…”

  3. Facebook Content Moderators Use Drugs, Sex at Work to Cope With PTSD – Report (sputniiknews, Feb 26, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/business/201902261072742904-facebook-moderators-ptsd-stress/

“Viewing thousands of murder and rape videos takes its toll on the workers, the report tells.

Facebook content moderators resort to drinking alcohol, taking drugs and even having sex at work in an attempt to cope with the stress of viewing countless violent videos and photos people keep posting on the social media platform, a report by The Verge tells.

The moderators staff are hired by Cognizant, a contractor that operates a facility in Arizona. The people working in the facility are paid $15 an hour — $4 more than the minimum wage in Arizona — for viewing a constant stream of offensive jokes, possible threats, and videos of beheadings and murders, the report says.

According to The Verge, the moderators are allowed two 15-minute breaks, one 30-minute lunch break and nine minutes of “wellness time” during a work day. However, most of that time is usually spent in huge lines waiting to use a bathroom, since there are only three bathroom stalls for hundreds of workers.
Satisfying the bodily needs is complicated, however, since many workers use the bathroom stalls for having sex, as a way to cope with the stress that comes with viewing hours of offensive materials. Others prefer the facility’s nursing rooms instead; the issue has become so widespread the company has reportedly removed locks from said rooms.

However, having a quickie in a closet is not the only way Facebook moderators lighten up, the Verge writes. Some workers reportedly confessed to drinking alcohol and using drugs at work “to forget”, too.

The constant flow of social media media posts makes the moderators slowly embrace the ideas they are supposed to moderate. The gun-wielding former employee confessed to The Verge that he no longer believes 9/11 was a terrorist attack. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and generali anxiety, he said in an interview.

Employees in training are effectively forced to watch the content, unable to turn off the audio or pause the video, the report says. Such privileges only become available to full-time employees.

The employees are subject to strict working restriction: neither phones nor smallest pieces of papers are allowed in the work area for fear that a moderator might write down a user’s personal data. All allowed items — such as hand lotion bottles — must be put in transparent plastic bags so that the supervisor can see them.
The rules that apply to moderation change constantly, the workers say. Sometimes the existing rules don’t make particular sense: such as allowing “my favourite ni***” comments as “explicitly positive content,” or allowing “autistic people should be sterilised,” since autism doesn’t count as “protected characteristic,” such as gender or race.

Sometimes, the supervisors can’t come to a single consensus regarding a particular topic, telling some moderators to delete a video related to a particular event, while telling others to keep it.

In the meantime, falling beneath just 95% of accurate moderation decisions might get you fired. Appealing the decision of a quality assurance manager (QA) is prohibitively complicated. As a result, terminated moderators often threaten the QAs with physical violence over their decisions. One QA manager told the Verge he used to bring a gun to the job, because, by the end of the day, there were always terminated moderators waiting for him at his car.

However, Cognizant denies any risk of their employees developing PTSD. Instead, the company says the employees are likely to experience “post-traumatic growth”, becoming emotionally stronger, The Independent report says.
A Facebook spokesperson released a statement in response to The Verge’s report, citing the company has certain standards concerning “well-being and support”.

“We value the hard work of content reviewers and have certain standards around their well-being and support,” the statement read. “We work with only highly reputable global partners that have standards for their workforce, and we jointly enforce these standards with regular touch points to ensure the work environment is safe and supportive, and that the most appropriate resources are in place.”

However, in another statement by Facebook, Cognizant admitted they will investigate allegations made in the report and take “appropriate action”.”

“Critics have interpreted a hijab-wearing Muslim girl in an ad by a municipal housing company as a token of political correctness gone wrong and as a harbinger of things to come.

A new summer job ad by the municipal housung company Stångåstaden in the Swedish town of Linköping featuring a Muslim girl in a hijab has sparked strong reactions. Many Swedes were repelled by the ad, which, they suggested, normalised honour-related oppression.

Stångåstaden’s campaign is party aimed at minors, as the company made it clear on their website that they are looking for applicants aged 17 and over.

A movie ad has also been made. The only younger person who appears in the ad is a child who is wearing a veil.

The hijab ad divided Swedes, which resulted in a heated debate on social media….”

US Vice President Mike Pence and Venezuela opposition leader Juan Guaido agreed on a strategy to tighten the noose around President Nicolas Maduro following a meeting with regional allies in Colombia on Monday.

Pence announced more sanctions against Venezuela and $56 million in aid for neighboring countries grappling with a flood of people fleeing the economically stricken country.

Maduro hit back in an interview broadcast the same day, saying the regional meeting was aimed at setting up a parallel government and accusing the US of coveting his country’s oil and being willing to go to war to get it.

“We hope for a peaceful transition to democracy but President Trump has made it clear: all options are on the table,” said Pence, who passed on Trump’s “100 percent” support to Guaido.

The meeting came after four people were killed and hundreds injured as Guaido supporters clashed with Venezuelan security forces on the borders with Colombia and Brazil over the weekend in a thwarted bid to bring in humanitarian aid.

        OAN Newsroom
        UPDATED 10:08 AM PT — Monday, February 25, 2019

The U.S. has announced new sanctions against Venezuela as critical humanitarian aid is blocked from getting into the country.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the sanctions are targeting four Venezuelan governors. The officials are assisting the Maduro regime with the blockade, which is causing the people of Venezuela to suffer. Mnuchin claimed the governors are involved in “endemic corruption,” and said their actions are shameful.

Earlier this month, the U.S. sanctioned a top oil executive and several Venezuelan intelligence officials for alleged human rights violations. Mnuchin said the officials are responsible for corruption as well as suppressing Venezuela’s democracy.

THE United States has sent special forces to Puerto Rico and Colombia in preparation for a “military invasion” of Venezuela, Russian has claimed.

Russian Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev claims the US is amassing troops near the Venezuelan border ahead of a military operation in the south American country.

US forces have been deployed to “overthrow the lawfully elected incumbent president [of Venezuela] Nicolas Maduro”, he said.

  8. Brexit CAN be delayed, May tells MPs: PM bows to Remainer rebellion after brutal Cabinet showdown and sparks Brexiteer fury as she promises MPs they WILL be able to delay EU exit by two months IF her deal fails

Theresa May surrendered to a Remainer revolt today by promising that MPs will get a vote on whether to delay Brexit.

With negotiations deadlocked in Brussels and the clock running down, the PM told the Commons no deal would only happen with ‘explicit consent’ and it will get a chance to extend Article 50 within a fortnight.

The climbdown came as Mrs May scrambles to avert mass resignations by ministers who have been vowing to rule out no deal in crunch votes tomorrow.

She tried to soothe angry Eurosceptics by insisting that a delay could only be a ‘one-off’ and was not something she wanted to do. She stressed she will never cancel the Brexit process altogether, arguing that the UK could make a ‘success’ of no deal if it has to.

It’s hard to imagine how conservatives could be even more complacent than they actually are about what’s being done to this country.

The schools our children are taught in are almost universally run by liberals who hate everything we stand for, but we don’t demand that our representatives pull funding from state schools that behave that way.

Hollywood has become vocally, over-the-top hostile to Christians and conservatives, but we go see the movies anyway.

We still buy the papers and watch the cable news shows of networks that talk about us like we’re Nazis because we don’t agree with their liberal worldview.

More recently, increasingly monopolistic social media companies that have an inordinate amount of control over who gets heard and who doesn’t have started actively targeting conservatives and we just shrug or spout platitudes.

  10. A report says Iran may be preparing for a nuclear ‘break-out.’ Dems want to reenter the Iran deal
By Jeff Dunetz February 25, 2019

According to reports at I24 news and Israel’s channel 13, the head of MI6, Great Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, visited Israel in secret this week to meet with his Israeli counterparts regarding coordinating intelligence efforts, over concerns that Iran may be gearing up to make the leap to developing a nuclear weapon. Despite this, the Democrats are demanding that the US reenter the flawed JCPOA.

Although Israel has been warning the world that Tehran would find ways to cheat on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the UK and other EU countries have continued to support the JCPOA agreement and have opposed the American sanctions re-imposed in August and November 2018.

Britain, France, and Germany established a barter-type system known as INSTEX that is designed to allow their businesses to skirt direct financial transactions with Iran and thereby make an end around the U.S. sanctions.

Iran, however, is doing everything it can within the framework of the agreement:

  11. Trump Looks To Maneuver Dems Into Accepting Spending Cuts

The White House will submit a fiscal year 2020 budget to Congress in coming weeks which seeks to force the Democratic party’s hand on accepting spending cuts.

Acting Office and Management Budget Director Russ Vought wrote in a Monday morning op-ed that the Trump administration’s forthcoming budget will adhere to existing spending caps already put into place by Congress. In order to continue making investments in defense spending, The White House will tap into Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funds, which are special war funds not subject to spending caps.

The White House’s plan may rankle some conservatives, particularly given that Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Vought have been vocally against such funding tactics. Mulvaney went so far as to introduce legislation which would significantly hinder the executive branch’s ability to spend such funds in the manner currently proposed by the White House. A senior administration official rebutted to The Daily Caller that “any time you’re in a CAPs increase conversation, the way the Hill reads that is that we’re going to increase defense and non-defense dollar for dollar,” adding that “this sets up a dynamic where they actually have to pass a bill to override sequestration, so that’s why we’re going this route.”

By Hans Bader February 26, 2019

Orange Coast College doesn’t care about the First Amendment. It banned Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) from displaying a banner reading “Don’t Tread on Me: 2nd Amendment Since 1789,” that depicted two rifles.

As UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh notes, the College did so by claiming the banner violated its anti-gun policy. But that policy’s language bans guns or toy guns, not depictions of guns. So it logically doesn’t even apply to the banner at all. The College cited a policy titled “WEAPONS PROHIBITED ON DISTRICT PROPERTY,” which says,

Facebook said in a statement that when opinions amount to hate speech that may intimidate certain groups in society it must ‘take action’.

The site accused Mr Robinson of ‘repeatedly’ flouting rules designed to prevent ‘organised hate’ on the site.

‘Tommy Robinson’s Facebook Page has repeatedly broken these standards, posting material that uses dehumanizing language and calls for violence targeted at Muslims,’ it said.

Mr Robinson said he had not heard of his ban from Facebook, claiming the ‘corrupt media and the establishment’ were trying ‘to silence any opposition to their globalist plans’.

He added: ‘When putting me in prison and trying to kill me hasn’t worked, when then trying to get mainstream documentaries to destroy my name with false allegations, that hasn’t worked.

‘Now, the establishment, which has gone for the plan of completely removing me from the public sphere – people will fight against this censorship, people will not like this censorship.

‘You’re not just censoring me, you’re censoring the public’s option of listening to what I have to say. This is a complete attack on free speech which is going on across the world.’

A spokesman for Momentum, the grassroots movement supportive of Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party, said: ‘Hate speech isn’t free speech and spreading racist lies shouldn’t be tolerated on our shared digital platforms.’

Emails and tweets from Tommy Robinson were used as evidence in the trial of Darren Osborne, who was convicted of murder for driving a van into worshippers outside two mosques in London, to show his path of ‘radicalisation’ before committing the attack in June 2017.

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation who has campaigned against grooming gangs in Rochdale from within the Pakistani community, said he welcomed the ban and claimed he had met with Facebook representatives to ‘discuss the concern of the British Muslim community that Tommy Robinson’s continued presence on social media was leading to further radicalisation of his supporters’.

‘This is not about free speech or silencing criticism or questioning of Islam and Muslims, this is about hate speech and hatred towards one community,’ Mr Shafiq said, adding that he had contacted Google and YouTube to urge them to take similar action.

The ban has received a mixed response on social media, with some expressing concerns that it is an attempt to shut down free speech, others alleging that it is in response to Mr Robinson’s recent film, which was the focus of a rally in Salford this week.

Some critics of the activist – who has also worked as a journalist for Rebel Media – have welcomed the measure.

Anti-racist pressure group Hope not Hate welcomed the decision today to remove profiles belonging to Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Nick Lowles, chief executive of HOPE not hate, said: ‘Stephen Lennon is a far-right thug who uses his platform to bully, abuse and stir up division, monetising his hatred to earn huge sums while hiding behind a fake free speech mantle.

‘Lennon has a long record of abuse towards minorities such as Muslims, so we welcome today’s decision as well as Facebook’s continued actions in cleaning up their platform.’

It comes just days after Mr Robinson appeared to make racist comments while asking for a taxi driver, which he described as ‘little p*** that drives a car’ in a drunken video.

In the video, which he shot on his phone, he also rants about being ‘the king of the whole Islam race’ and fighting for Israel if war broke out with Palestine.

Going on Facebook to respond shortly after the video was published by The Sun on February 13, Robinson said the video was shared between friends in a private group.

He claimed he was very drunk when the video was made and his comments were ‘banter’ after he also bragged he could score ‘gear’ in the country.

He denied he had bought drugs in Qatar, which he claimed was near-impossible, and said Asian and black friends were in the messaging group with whom he shared the video.

Last month, YouTube suspended adverts on Robinson’s account, saying he breached rules which prohibit the promotion of ‘hatred, intolerance and discrimination’.

Mr Robinson also waded into a row following the targeting of a Syrian refugee at a school near Huddersfield.

A bully was filmed headbutting a 16-year-old called Jamal before dragging him to the floor, pouring water over his face and threatening to drown him.

Following the incident, Mr Robinson took to Facebook to falsely accused the victim of attacking three English girls and a boy.

Last month the youngster’s family announced that it was pursuing legal action against Facebook for allowing ‘defamation’ on the social media platform.

Tommy Robinson’s full statement on the ban

The 36-year-old activist believes he has been banned from Facebook and Instagram due to a documentary he made in which he argued that media coverage of him was biased.

He said: ‘This is in response to my expose documentary called Panodrama, which exposed the establishment working with Hope not Hate, working along with the media, in order to bring me down and destroy me.

‘Now they have realised that that has not worked, they’re working with the tech giants to remove us completely

‘Where is free speech? I’ve breached no laws of Facebook, everyone is going to know that I’ve breached no rules, what I’ve done is shown people the truth and that is what they are removing, the truth. People will still find me.

‘People will be astonished by this censorship, especially witnessing it in response to my expose documentary.’

The ambitious plan has had a rocky start, but it has also changed the national conversation. That alone is reason to applaud it.

    By The Editorial Board

It’s hard to believe, but worth recalling, that during the presidential debates in 2016, not a single question about climate change was put to Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. That, of course, was before a plague of hurricanes, droughts and savage forest fires in California and around the world captured the public’s attention; before Mr. Trump brought renewed focus to the very issue he had dismissed as a hoax by fecklessly rolling back nearly every positive policy thing President Barack Obama had done to address it; before a series of frightening scientific reports appeared last year, warning that the window of opportunity to ward off the worst consequences of a warming globe was quickly closing.

  18. WSJ – Cohen to Testify That Trump Engaged in Criminal Conduct While in Office

President’s ex-lawyer will tell House committee he witnessed Trump’s ‘lies, racism and cheating,’ role in hush payments, says a person familiar with his plans

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer, will for the first time publicly accuse the president of criminal conduct while in office related to a hush-money payment to a porn star, a person familiar with his planned testimony before Congress said.

Appearing on Wednesday before the House Oversight Committee, Mr. Cohen also will make public some of Mr. Trump’s private financial statements and allege that Mr. Trump at times inflated or deflated his net worth for business and personal purposes, including avoiding paying property taxes, the person said. The financial statements were developed by Mr. Trump’s accountant, the person said. The Wall Street Journal hasn’t seen those statements.

Mr. Cohen’s testimony is expected to focus on his “behind-the-scenes” accounts of working for Mr. Trump for over a decade, a period during which Mr. Cohen will say he witnessed “lies, racism and cheating” by Mr. Trump, the person said.

Mr. Cohen is expected to recount racist remarks Mr. Trump allegedly made to him, including instances in which Mr. Trump allegedly questioned the intelligence of African-Americans and criticized their lifestyle choices, the person said.

Mr. Cohen’s planned testimony comes 13 months after The Wall Street Journal first reported that Mr. Cohen paid $130,000 in October 2016 to former adult-film star Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, to buy her silence after she alleged having a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump.

In the wake of the Journal’s revelations, federal prosecutors investigated Mr. Cohen’s activities, raided his home, hotel room and office, and began probing the business practices of the Trump Organization, including whether it committed campaign-finance violations. The Trump Organization investigation, spearheaded by the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, is continuing, people familiar with the matter said.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement called Mr. Cohen a “disgraced felon” and noted that he had previously pleaded guilty for lying to Congress and making other false statements.

“Sadly, he will go before Congress this week and we can expect more of the same,” she said. “It’s laughable that anyone would take a convicted liar like Cohen at his word, and pathetic to see him given yet another opportunity to spread his lies.”

A spokesman for the Trump Organization didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Cohen agreed to testify before the committee at the behest of its Democratic chairman, Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, after postponing his scheduled hearing last month, citing public statements by Mr. Trump he saw as threats toward members of his family.

In August Mr. Cohen implicated the president in two federal crimes when he told prosecutors Mr. Trump directed hush-money payments during the 2016 campaign to Ms. Clifford and to former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who alleged she had an affair with Mr. Trump.

The person familiar with Mr. Cohen’s anticipated testimony said Mr. Cohen would provide “evidence of criminal conduct since Mr. Trump became president,” but other than saying it involved the Clifford payment, wouldn’t offer more specifics before Wednesday’s House hearing.

The hearing would be the first time Mr. Cohen alleges that Mr. Trump committed a crime while in office. While the payments to both women were made in the weeks before the 2016 presidential election, Mr. Trump has faced questions from reporters about his possible knowledge of Mr. Cohen’s subsequent reimbursement for the Clifford payment, as well as about whether he had any conversations with Mr. Cohen about efforts to conceal the payment after the Journal first reported its existence in January 2018.

Mr. Trump previously has described the Clifford payment as a “simple private transaction” and said if the payments were illegal, it was Mr. Cohen’s “mistake.” The president has denied the sexual encounters with the women as well as ordering Mr. Cohen to arrange the payments to them.

In December, federal prosecutors in New York for the first time directly implicated the president in the payoff scheme, referring to him in court papers as “Individual-1,” alleging that Mr. Trump had played a key role in the hush payments, as The Journal had previously detailed in its reporting.

Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty to eight federal crimes in August, including tax evasion and making false statements to a bank, and to one count of lying to Congress in November. He is expected on Wednesday to express contrition about the crimes he committed and acknowledge his mistakes, the person said. He will attest to having lied repeatedly to protect Mr. Trump and to what led him to publicly break with the president last summer, the person said. He will also reiterate that he wouldn’t accept a presidential pardon from Mr. Trump if one were offered, the person said. Mr. Cohen is scheduled to begin a three-year prison term on May 6.

Mr. Cohen will give his most detailed public account to date of Mr. Trump’s alleged direction of the hush payments, as well as how Mr. Trump was involved in efforts to conceal them from the public weeks before the 2016 election, according to the person.

He will also allege that Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg was involved in those efforts, the person said.

The Journal first detailed Mr. Cohen’s account to prosecutors of Mr. Weisselberg’s involvement in November. Mr. Weisselberg was granted immunity by federal prosecutors in the investigation and testified before a grand jury, according to a people familiar with the matter.

A lawyer for Mr. Weisselberg declined to comment.

Mr. Cohen spent more than a decade working for Mr. Trump, first at the Trump Organization and later as his personal lawyer. But the pair had an often turbulent relationship: Mr. Trump at one point asked senior aides to persuade Mr. Cohen to resign, and later slashed his annual income of more than $400,000 roughly in half, the Journal has previously reported.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cohen for more than a decade remained unswervingly loyal, and ultimately found a niche as a fixer of some of Mr. Trump’s thornier problems. In 2017, Mr. Cohen told Vanity Fair: “I’m the guy who would take a bullet for the president.” Less than a year later, Mr. Cohen publicly broke with the president, saying he was putting his family and country first.

In a memo released last week, Mr. Cummings said that in addition to the hush-money payments, Mr. Cohen’s testimony would focus on the president’s compliance with tax laws, his “potential and actual conflicts of interest,” his business practices and “the accuracy of the President’s public statements,” among other matters.

Mr. Cohen won’t answer questions related to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether Mr. Trump or any of his associates colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. election, according to a person close to Mr. Cohen. Mr. Trump has denied collusion, as has Russia.

In November, Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty in a separate case brought by Mr. Mueller’s office to lying to Congress in 2017 to play down Mr. Trump’s involvement in efforts during the campaign to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Mr. Cohen is expected to explain why he lied to Congress about Trump Tower Moscow but isn’t expected to say whether Mr. Trump had directed him to make those misstatements, according to the person familiar with Wednesday’s planned testimony. Mr. Cohen will tell the committee that Mr. Trump continued to inquire about the project months past January 2016—the month Mr. Cohen cited before Congress in 2017 as when the project ended, this person said.

Also this week, Mr. Cohen is set to speak privately to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees.

Republicans on the Oversight Committee plan to try to undercut and discredit Mr. Cohen’s testimony by raising questions about his motivations for speaking to Congress.

Republicans plan to ask Mr. Cohen the reason for the “sudden righteousness” that led him to plead guilty and implicate the president in crimes, according to a GOP lawmaker on the committee. They also plan to ask who is paying his legal fees; why he fired his former attorney, Guy Petrillo; and to whom he has spoken about his conversations with investigators, the lawmaker said.

In a letter last week to the chairman, GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Mark Meadows of North Carolina accused the panel under Mr. Cummings’s leadership of being “out to attack the president for partisan gain,” noting that Mr. Cohen had previously lied to Congress in a 2017 hearing. They said they intended to question Mr. Cohen about his “conduct throughout his professional life and any other financial dealings he has had, including with his father-in-law.”

The documents Mr. Cohen plans to discuss in his public testimony partly reflect a way for Mr. Cohen to deflect attacks from Republican members of the committee, the person familiar with his plans said, adding: “He expects to be called a liar.”

  20. VICE NEWS – Mueller’s Investigation Has Created An Underworld Of Online Sleuths.

Sorting through the data of the dead — their pots, their knives, and the rocks they cooked on — in order to reconstruct how they once lived, is not so different from tracking the Special Counsel investigation.

On a Friday in February, Adrienne Cobb, 29, lab assistant in the archaeology department at Western Washington University, was trying to do both. She was digitizing data on artifacts found on a farm in Washington state that were about 3,000 years old, and keeping track of what was happening on Capitol Hill, where the House Judiciary Committee grilled Matthew Whitaker — then, acting Attorney General — about his involvement in Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign and its links to Russia.

Cobb’s an unlikely candidate for legal sleuthing. She’s a recovering heroin addict with no experience in journalism, and a preference for Ghost Adventures over Reliable Sources. (“I hate cable news.”) She has dyed red hair, rocks Daria-esque glasses, and tends to look at the floor when she isn’t absorbed by a screen.

She spends her free time — and some of her office time, too — tracking every update, big and small, in Mueller’s probe. She’s part of an online community of digital sleuths, amateur journalists, and statisticians, who commit hours upon hours of their lives to all things Mueller. Some have launched careers out of obsessively tracking the investigation’s twists and turns.

But for her, keeping track of Mueller’s work is about helping others feel less “helpless” in a wilderness of fast-paced, complex news that doesn’t always add up. She calls herself an “aggregator,” which seems simple enough, but it’s tough work. She checks Twitter and Reddit three times an hour for new, relevant reporting, and saves links to those articles with the program, Evernote. Meanwhile, news of every White House departure goes in a separate spreadsheet that she’ll refer to in order to update her website, 45Chaos, which in granular detail, notes every staffer who’s left, whether and why they quit, resigned, or resigned under pressure (“R-UP”), and measures the length of their tenure in “mooches,” a metric born in Trump’s White House. (She goes by 10-days, not 11, though there’s a debate over how long Anthony Scaramucci really lasted as White House Communications Director.)

On the weekends, she wakes at 4:30 a.m. and never makes plans to leave the house for long — giving her just enough time for scan every article she’s saved to Evernote, for any new revelations. These get boiled down into weekly recaps that she posts every Monday to a Reddit forum called, appropriately, “Keep_Track.” Readers sometimes message her in appreciation or send tips, and her summaries have ballooned along with the news cycle to run as long as 5,000 words. On Monday, the process starts again.

“I get a lot of people who say, ‘I can’t believe that all happened in one week,’” she said. “Or, ‘That feels like it was a month ago, because so much has happened.’ So I think there’s value to seeing it all in one spot.”

There’s value, even for the other Mueller obsessives who, like Cobb, have become addicted to tracking the unknown-knowns.

Scott Stedman, a 23-year-old, started tracking Mueller’s probe while he was a political science major at UC Irvine. Within a year of graduation, his obsessive reporting and research has earned him bylines in major outlets and landed him a book deal (Real News, out in April). Stedman says he’s a fan of Cobb’s recaps. “I find them super useful. It’s a testament to how much information there is.”

Some of Cobb’s readers even donate — she makes about $150 a month through her Patreon account, and 76,000 people subscribe to the Reddit forum, where her work is pinned to the top, so any new members can get caught up on the fly.

“There was a New Yorker cartoon that came out this week that I think sums it up pretty well,” says A.G., the host of the popular podcast Mueller She Wrote, referring to a Julia Suits cartoon that some might see as an exaggeration but that many in this Mueller-obsessed world received with a ring of truth. The cartoon shows a conspiracist-type standing in a room, wallpapered in names ripped from Washington Post headlines, and string trying to connect them all.

    • Word for Word: Deputy Attorney General on Mueller Investigation

Following a speech on the Rule of Law, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was asked about the Mueller Investigation. While he did not comment on the investigation directly, he did say he thinks Attorney General William Barr is going to do the right thing when the investigation is complete.

    • There’s most definitely a conservative counterpart to this:
an online community of digital sleuths, amateur journalists, and statisticians, who commit hours upon hours of their lives to all things Mueller. Some have launched careers out of obsessively tracking the investigation’s twists and turns…

Sites remarkable for their collegial tone, upbeat “safe-spaces” for the Tea Party crowd have fallen down this rabbit-hole. Sharing reflections on current events no longer brings them together. Instead, they fracture over interpretations of churning unknown-knowns. Rival factions get into such bitter arguments they can’t tolerate each other, spin off to new sites.

Not left or right, something else is driving it. Whatever, it’s unhealthy and worrisome.

  21. WATCH: NRA Sends Oscars Message To ‘Hypocritical’ Celebrities From ‘Real Hollywood Hero’

The National Rifle Association took the opportunity of the 91st Academy Awards to issue a message Sunday to all those “hypocritical and ideologically extreme” celebrities from “a real Hollywood hero,” Charlton Heston, the former president of the gun rights organization.

Mixing historic footage of Heston discussing the crucial nature of the Second Amendment with footage of prominent voices of the Left — including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, director Michael Moore, and actress Ashley Judd — the video seeks to highlight “today’s hypocritical and ideologically extreme celebrities, socialist politicians, activists, athletes, the media,” the NRA explained in a press release.

“Imagine if every kid had learned what we learned — that without a Second Amendment, by what means could a free people expect to protect freedom?” says Heston. “We learned that, history proves it, common sense confirms it, and any school kid can grasp it. Only people who are free to own firearms can remain free people.”

How does it possibly elude anyone still drawing breath that just this set of qualifications alone is enough to send woolly-minded flocks of triggered snowflakes stampeding in panic-stricken terror towards the nearest safe space.

On a far more serious note: Just mere decades ago the gist of Heston’s soliloquy was so self-evident and indisputable as to render his words melodramatically trite, if not a blinding glimpse of the obvious (to NRA members, at least).

NOW, HIS IS A VOICE FROM THE GRAVE.

Hope against every last hope that it shall not, as well, be the final resting place of The United States’ Constitution, nor even just its noble Second Amendment—without which that document’s (and the American citizenry’s) fangs would be permanently drawn.

      • It is still strong in most of fly over country, there are a few strong holds of left wing domination and thought but for the most part we are still standing strong.

While no one likes the dirty little asymmetric wars they are teaching all of the military to resist gun control because you never know who is your friend and who is your enemy. If these nasty little wars help preserve the Constitution they are worth fighting. Starting in Nam most vets didn’t want to be disarmed no matter what side of the political spectrum they were from. Now with most recruits coming from the right that feeling is intensified.

Lessons for Jussie Smollett and the Left.

“Why did Jussie Smollett do it?” a thousand anxiously clueless progressives ask.

To paraphrase Willie Sutton, because that’s where the money is.

Just ask Khalil Cavil, a Texas waiter, who raised a thousand bucks off a fake note that he wrote himself, “We don’t tip terrorist.”

“I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists,” he claimed.

There have been multiple cases in recent years of waiters and waitresses faking racist notes and then scoring thousands in online donations for their pain and suffering before the hoax gets exposed.

More vicious hypocrisy from the Left.

Newly elected congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez jumped for joy when Amazon decided not to build its second headquarters in New York City because of hostility that the company encountered when it was suddenly disclosed that in order to entice the mega-company to the Big Apple, a closed-door deal had been reached that would have given Amazon a three billion dollar tax break.

The unrelated backdrop for this is that it took place even as New York City is gearing up to implement a “congesting pricing” tax that would require drivers who drive their vehicles into midtown Manhattan during business hours to pay a sort of toll.

This will certainly impose a hardship on those who must drive into the heart of New York City, and cab drivers who are unable to pay their bills now will be devastated by this new fee slapped on them by politicians.

However, Amazon, one of the wealthiest corporations in the U.S. if not the world, would have been given a three billion dollar tax break! This takes chutzpah to a new level.

  26. BBC -IRELAND – St Michan’s, Dublin: Vandals decapitate 800-year-old crusader

An 800-year-old “crusader” from a crypt in a Dublin church has been decapitated by vandals.

Archdeacon David Pierpoint said the crusader’s head had been “severed from his body and taken away”.

The discovery was made as a tour guide was preparing to open the church for visitors on Monday afternoon.

Archdeacon Pierpoint said he was upset and disappointed that the church had been targeted again by vandals.

The crypt of St Michan’s was vandalised in 1996.

Archdeacon Pierpoint told RTÉ the incident was devastating for the parish and community.

He said initially he was “quite disgusted” when he saw what had happened, but now he was “just sad”.

“It’s a sad day for the church and a sad day for humanity that someone would do such a thing.”

    Who were the crusaders?

Crusaders fought in a series of religious wars known as the Crusades which were sanctioned by the Church in the medieval period.

The most commonly known of the crusades were campaigns in the eastern Mediterranean aimed at recovering the Holy Land from Muslim rule.

There were seven major crusades as well as many less significant ones.

Tours of the site are being cancelled for the foreseeable future. Last year about 27,000 people visited the church.

In a statement, the Church of Ireland said the crypt had been badly damaged and several of the mummies, including the 400-year-old remains of a nun, had been desecrated in the incident.

The crusader’s body was turned over and his head was removed.

Archdeacon Pierpoint said a solid steel internal gate was also taken but the immediate concern was securing the vaults.

There are also concerns the remains will disintegrate in the open air as the conditions in the crypt keep them preserved.

Gardaí (Irish police) are examining CCTV footage from the church.

    ‘Football with heads’

The crypt of St Michan’s was previously vandalised in 1996, when a group of teenagers broke in and took a number of mummified bodies from their coffins.

“They dragged them onto the ground and seemed to be playing football with their heads,” Archdeacon Pierpoint told the Irish Times.

He added: “Thankfully at that time the guards did their jobs extremely well and they caught the perpetrators.”

Following the 1996 break-in, the crypts were closed to the public for a week, while the bodies were recovered.

Slight nitpick: The Vandals were an East Germanic tribe that once lived in what is now, modern-day Poland. We all £ü¢kïñg well know this desecration of Crusader remains was perpetrated by Muslims (as is consistently their wont—except in their own little Islamic $h!thølés where entire families get snuffed for anyone doing crap like this).

  27. Russia’s Perpetual Quest for Military Modernization

When we consider the remaining years of the 2010s and look forward into the 2020s, we can clearly see that Russia’s decline in terms of technology, the knowledge economy, and the economy in general will continue to be the dominant trend. A driving factor behind this development is the country’s exorbitant military spending.

Such spending has long been a key factor in Russian history. Russia’s “resurgence,” which appeared to be so robust in the 2000s, already contained many elements of its forthcoming decline. That decline is a complex phenomenon encompassing factors ranging from demography to infrastructure to corruption.

In 2011, an increase in petro-revenues reassured the Moscow leadership of the availability of resources to build up the country’s military might, resulting in approval of the hugely expensive 2020 Armament Program. This mega-investment coincided with the curtailing of many of Medvedev’s “modernization” program initiatives and was criticized by many economists as too big.

  28. foodwatch demands end of EU-presidency partnership with Coca-Cola

foodwatch strongly criticizes Coca-Cola’s partnership with the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In an open letter foodwatch called on the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the Romanian Prime Minister Viorica D?ncil?, to immediately stop Coca-Cola’s partnership with the Romanian EU-Presidency.

It is completely inappropriate that in a time of major obesity problems and additional disease burdens such as type 2 diabetes, the Presidency of the Council of the EU is sponsored by Coca-Cola. In addition this kind of relationship between major EU institutions and corporate interests further undermines public trust in European politics and decision makers, whereas we need on the contrary to reinforce transparency and democracy in Europe.

foodwatch asks the EU-presidency and the President of the EU Council to put in place a policy with clear rules for future Presidencies in order to ensure that potential conflicts of interest are effectively and transparently avoided. The consumer organization launched an online petition against Coca-Cola’s sponsoring. This petition can be signed on the French, German and Dutch website.

    “Proudly supported by Coca-Cola”

From January 2019, Romania holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for a period of six months. With a programme endeavouring to find solutions to a wide range of European issues, there is a busy schedule of meetings happening in Bucharest and other cities across Romania.

Journalists from German television ZDF and ARD have already expressed their surprise at seeing Coca-Cola prominently visible as a sponsor. Participants have been welcomed to these meetings with signs from the Romanian Presidency stating “The Coca-Cola system proudly supports the first Romanian EU Council Presidency”.

There are also Coca-Cola beanbags, billboards and of course drinks. Coca-Cola is one of just a few ‘platinum’ partners of the Romanian Presidency of the European Union, a relationship that Romania describes as a ‘partnership’. The Romanian beer brewer’s organisation Berarii and other companies are also sponsoring the Presidency.

It is not unique that these kinds of political positions are sponsored, but these cosy corporate relationships are undesirable, says foodwatch. Coca-Cola, for example, also sponsored the Polish Presidency in 2011. Among other things, it supplied 140,000 litres of drinks for the meetings.

foodwatch considers it highly undesirable that companies sponsor such political events and processes. It is important to avoid policy being influenced by commercial interests. But even the appearance of a conflict of interest alone should be avoided, as this adversely affects confidence in politics, especially in a time of declining trust in politics and politicians.

A way to “fight back” on sugartax?

Within the next months, EU Politicians will consider revisions to the General Food Law, which sets standards on food and health for all EU countries. Also the important issue of nutritional labeling on food packages is on the agenda. Other issues that may arise at the EU level during the Romanian Presidency include nutrient profiling, the sugar tax/levy on sweetened drinks and the marketing of sugary foods to children. In 2016 Coca-Cola’s strategy to – in their words – “fight back” on a sugartax/levy was leaked. The sponsorship of the EU-Presidency is consistent with this fight back strategy, as part of Coca-Cola’s lobbying efforts. It is known that Coca-Cola has lobbied Romania at least twice prior to the start of the Presidency.

foodwatch says: Issues that affect the health and freedom of choice of all EU citizens, deserve the unbiased attention of politicians. foodwatch stands for a democratic European policy that puts the interests of its citizens first. To make that reality, the blatant lobbying, sponsorship and influence of the food industry must stop!

  29. Afghanistan: Three suspected ISIS suicide attackers paraded before media in Jalalabad

The Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) paraded three suspected ISIS attackers arrested for planning suicide attacks in the Afghan capital of Kabul, in front of the press in Jalalabad on Tuesday. The men were reportedly captured by NDS forces on the Jalalabad-Kabul highway this week.

During a press conference, the governor of Eastern Nangarhar province Shah Mahmood Miakhel said that the IS-related militants were planning to use fake IDs to enter the city.

“They were supposed to enter Kabul through the entrance gate with a fake Afghani identity [the e-Tazkira] to blow themselves up in Kabul, as they are related to the ISIS-militant group,” he explained.

    • Afghanistan: Rising polio rates linked to flows across Pakistan border

Recent cases of polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan are being attributed to the flow of people across the Pakistan-Afghan border, some of whom might be carrying the virus. Scores of people were seen heading into Pakistan through a border crossing at Torkham on Saturday.

“As the Nangarhar province is located in the east, and has a long border with Pakistan, every day a lot of people cross the border to both sides. I can say most cases we had last year were linked to Pakistan,” said Qudratullah Shekib, UNICEF’s spokesperson for its polio programme in Afghanistan, speaking in Jalalabad.

Many children affected by polio end up with permanent disabilities, which are difficult to treat in war-torn Afghanistan. The father of Mohammad Gul, a child with polio, said “now he can’t walk and he lies in bed all the time, as I work in a brick factory I don’t have any budget for his treatment, he [is] completely disabled.”

Polio immunisation teams are travelling around Nangarhar Province and vaccinating children. The aim, said Qudratullah, is “to continue our anti polio campaigns until we completely eliminate the polio virus” this year.

      • OK, I can’t deal with it…

Yeah, go fuck yourself. (they already have)

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6746249/Healthcare-student-given-gold-card-video-recommendation-join-ISIS-jailed.html

“A healthcare student has been jailed for more than eight years after he was sent a video recommendation to help him in his bid to join ISIS by a terrorist planning to behead Theresa May.

The film, given to Mohammad Aqib Imran, 22, was designed as a ‘gold card’ to help him join the terrorist group after his friend’s death.

His friend, Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman, 21, planned to launch a suicide bomb and knife attack on Downing Street.

Believing he would die in the attack, Rahman made a video recommendation vouching for his friend, intended as a message from beyond the grave.

Meanwhile, Imran told an undercover MI5 officer in an online conversation that he was prepared to attack Britain and then escape to join ISIS as a ‘two in one’.

He said he would maintain a deception of going to sixth-form college and seeking work placements, while actually planning to join ISIS during his half-term holidays…”

    • Wow! I just watched the entire movie and it is pretty damning. I don’t know why the Panorama reporter sat there and took it for so long. His crew certainly looked glum.

“The warm weather is prompting a surge in brazen migrants crossing the Channel, with some so confident that they are calling 999 from their boats to get a lift to Britain, say police chiefs.

Stephen Rodhouse, director general of operations with the National Crime Agency (NCA), told MPs migrant crossings will be an “enduring challenge” as the summer brings more warm weather.

Thirteen migrants were rescued on Tuesday trying to cross the Channel in the unseasonably good February weather, following 15 on Monday and a family of seven on Sunday.

MPs were told the migrants were deliberately seeking to get caught by British officials because they had no fear Britain would return them to France…”

In a separate action, police say they detained one person Monday and prevented the illegal transfer of seven Turkish citizens from Bosnia to neighboring European Union member state Croatia.

Thousands of migrants have been stuck in Bosnia as they seek to move on toward Western Europe. Migrants mostly travel illegally with the help of people smugglers.”

    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/02/26/muslim-man-kills-wife-after-she-admonished-him-selling-pork/

“Belgian Muslim Mokhtar Ammari has admitted to murdering his wife after she admonished him for selling pork.

The murder occurred at night between the 10th and 11th of February following a heated argument between Ammarti and his 48-year-old wife Fatima Khayer, Sud Info reports.

The man claimed that during the argument the victim had berated him for selling pork products in his shop and that the conflict escalated to the point where he pulled out a knife and stabbed her to death.

After killing the 48-year-old mother of his children, Ammari then made an attempt to kill himself by drinking a caustic chemical product.

Pascal Rodeyns, the lawyer for Ammari, claimed that his wife had berated him on more than one occasion in the past and that the relationship between them had deteriorated with Khayer accusing him on not being a good enough Muslim, eventually leading to the argument and the murder…”

  36. Hungary’s Orban says EU didn’t learn from terror attacks (abcnews, Feb 26, 2019)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/hungary-stepping-campaign-eu-leaders-migration-61322262

“The Hungarian government has expanded its new public campaign accusing European Union leaders of promoting mass migration, sending citizens a letter from the prime minister that warns “the Brussels bureaucrats want to break the resistance of countries opposed to immigration.”

In the one-page letter mailed to households in Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the EU “has not learned anything from the horrible terror attacks of the past years” and “wants to bring even more migrants to Europe” through new measures now under development.

A separate sheet mailed with the note listed seven alleged EU policies that Orban claimed encourage migration. They include weakening member states’ rights to border protection; giving more money to “political activist groups” that support migration; cutting financial assistance to countries viewed as anti-migration; and giving migrants prepaid bank cards.

“We want to defend our security and our Christian culture,” Orban said, alleging that “to attain their objective” the EU wants to crack down on countries like Hungary that have resisted taking in asylum-seekers.

The European Commission’s Hungarian office issued a detailed rebuttal of Orban’s claims. It denied the EU wants to cut financial assistance to countries where the governments have made it known migrants are not welcome or welcomed only under narrow circumstances.

The rebuttal also said prepaid bank cards were being used only in Greece to support the integration of refugees and asylum-seekers, not to encourage immigration…”

    • This is an interesting story in that it shows the EU on the defensive rather than offense.
So, the EU DOESN’T want to cut financial assistance to countries that oppose their immigration policy? And, they are ONLY using prepaid credit cards to promote assimilation?
      OK…LOL!

“Tunisian authorities say a man suspected of several extremist attacks has assaulted a judge with his gavel during his trial at a Tunis military court.

The 33-year-old Adel Ghandri was brought to court Tuesday alongside several other suspects accused of attacking a military station in Ben Guerdane, near the border with Libya, where assailants allegedly tried to create an emirate on behalf of the Islamic State group two years ago.

According to a statement from Tunisia’s military justice system, Ghandri managed to seize the judge’s gavel and hit him on the head. It was not clear if the judge was injured in the incident.

Ghandri is suspected of involvement in the Ben Guerdane attack and of playing a role in two other attacks in Tunisia that killed 60 people, mainly tourists, in 2015.”

The official says the bodies with gunshot and machete wounds were recovered after Tuesday’s attack in Maro village in Kaduna state. A policeman was killed while trying to calm the violence.

The official, close to a government team that went to the area, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The Kaduna governor’s spokesman confirmed the “sad news of renewed attacks in Kajuru and Kachia local government areas” but gave no death toll.

“The United States military says it has killed 20 fighters from the al-Shabab extremist group with an airstrike in central Somalia, a day after another airstrike in the area killed 35.

The U.S. military command for the African continent says the attack occurred on Monday near Shebeeley in the Hiran region and targeted a training camp used as a staging area for attacks.

The U.S. has dramatically increased airstrikes against the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab, Africa’s deadliest extremist group, since President Donald Trump took office.

The U.S. has carried out 23 strikes this year.

Authorities and experts acknowledge that it will take more than airstrikes to defeat the extremist group, which holds large parts of rural central and southern Somalia and carries out deadly suicide attacks in the capital, Mogadishu.”

  41. 2,000 Muslims ‘Ready to Carry Out Attacks at Any Time’ Says Former German Spy Chief
By Pamela Geller – on February 25, 2019

Merkel’s migrant munificence — the gift that keeps on giving. This incident is still more of the poison fruit of Merkel’s reckless, feckless policies regarding mass Muslim migration, which have set Germany on the path to national suicide. If Germany were remotely sane today, Merkel would be forced to resign over this. But it isn’t, and she won’t be. She will go down in history as the worst German Chancellor since Adolf Hitler. But what, exactly, did the Germans expect? Did they really think that they could inundate their nation with Muslim migrants and that there would not be any among them who were devout and violent? Germany has chosen the path to national suicide, and it is well on the way there.
