The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces on Saturday launched a final push to clear the area from IS under the cover of airstrikes by the U.S.-backed coalition.
The capture of the IS-held village of Baghouz and nearby areas would mark the end of a four-year global war to end IS’ territorial hold over large parts of Syria and Iraq, where the group established its self-proclaimed “caliphate” in 2014.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the push by the Kurdish-led SDF has been slow due to land mines and sniper fire, as well as the extremists’ use of tunnels and suicide car bombs. The IS also using civilians as human shields, the Observatory said.
On Monday, the Observatory said 13 IS militants, including five suicide attackers, were killed as well as six SDF fighters. The Kurdish Hawar news agency also reported heavy fighting Monday in Baghouz.
IS said in a statement posted late Sunday that two of its “martyrdom-seekers” attacked SDF fighters in Baghouz with their explosive-laden car.
Syrian state media claimed a U.S.-led coalition airstrike near Baghouz killed two women and two children. More than 20,000 civilians have left the IS-held area in recent weeks.
U.S. officials have said in recent weeks that IS has lost 99.5 percent of its territory and is holding onto fewer than 5 square kilometers in Syria, or less than 2 square miles, where the bulk of the fighters are concentrated. But activists and residents say IS still has sleeper cells in Syria and Iraq, and is laying the groundwork for an insurgency.
The U.S. military has warned the group could stage a comeback if the military and counter-terrorism pressure on it is eased.”

“Police in Bosnia said Monday they have launched a manhunt for a suspect in the killings of two people in the past week that has triggered panic in the country.
Police have called on the public to be vigilant and have appealed to citizens to report any sightings of 42-year-old Edin Gacic, saying he is armed and dangerous.
Police haven’t established a motive for the killings, and Bosnians have expressed fears about a gunman on the loose apparently selecting people to kill at random.
Gacic had served two prison sentences for murder in the past but was released in 2017 after serving two-thirds of the 20-year term. His victims had been a former Islamic fighter and Gacic’s own mother.
Bosnian media have reported that Gacic himself had served in a unit comprising Islamic extremists that fought alongside Bosnia’s Muslim-led government during the 1992-95 war.
Police suspect Gacic killed a grocery store owner near Konjic, southwest of Sarajevo, and a policeman in Suhodol, a village south of the capital city, in the past week.
“We are checking any information we get, all police agencies have been engaged,” said Aljosa Campara, who heads the police in the Muslim-Croat half of Bosnia. “We are doing all we can to protect the citizens.”
In Suhodol, a villager who identified himself only by his first name, Mujo, said he is afraid.

“Earlier, the US-backed Kurdish YPG militia announced that they were mopping up the last remnants of the Daesh (ISIS)* terrorist group on Syrian territory.
Daesh fighters are resorting to increasingly desperate measures to disguise themselves in an attempt to escape Kurdish fighters in southeast Syria, an unnamed YPG commander has told the Daily Star.
“You think of it, they do it,” the commander said. “It’s crazy right now, they’re really desperate. They are trying to blend in because there are so many [civilians],” he added.
Earlier, the Syrian Democratic Forces, the umbrella organisation which includes the YPG, reported that over 20,000 civilians had fled the area in recent days amid the battle between terrorists and the militia.
The YPG commander confirmed that fighters “have been trying to escape in women’s clothes,” explaining that “some of them dress as women because we don’t ask the women to raise their hijab.”
Other jihadists resorted to posing as members of civilian families, the commander said. “They go into random families and scare them.”
“The families are afraid to say, ‘oh no, I don’t know him’. They also say, ‘they forced me, let me pass by and I will tell you where they are’. At this point it doesn’t really matter what they say because, we know where they are. There’s only one place they can be,” the commander added, referring to the terrorists’ complete encirclement by the militia.
This isn’t the first reported case of Daesh fighters trying to flee the Syrian and Iraqi warzones in disguise. In 2015, shortly after the beginning of the Russian air campaign against the terrorists, hundreds of fighters in northern Syria reportedly shaved their beards and fled to Turkey. The Russian Air Force then began monitoring terrorist efforts from the de facto Daesh capital of Raqqa to flee as civilians. Later, the Iraqi Army temporarily banned the burqa and niqab in liberated Mosul for security reasons amid fears that terrorists were disguising themselves as women to escape…”

“A football player and refugee whose detention in Thailand sparked an outcry has been freed from jail after Bahrain withdrew its extradition request.
Hakeem al-Araibi, who is a Bahraini citizen, fled to Australia in 2014 and was granted political asylum.
He was detained in Bangkok in November on an Interpol notice requested by Bahrain. He had travelled to the Thai capital on honeymoon.
He was sentenced in absentia to 10 years for vandalising a police station.
Al-Araibi, 25, denies the charges. Human rights activists say he could face torture if sent back to Bahrain, where he was a vocal critic of the authorities.
His case has been taken up by high-profile footballers, with stars including Didier Drogba and Jamie Vardy calling for his release. The Australian government, football’s international governing body Fifa and the International Olympic Committee all lobbied Thailand.
Thailand’s Office of the Attorney General (OAG) asked the court to end proceedings against al-Araibi because Bahrain had said it no longer wanted him, officials told BBC Thai on Monday.
“This morning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us that Bahrain was no longer interested in this request,” OAG foreign office chief Chatchom Akapin said.
Al-Araibi is expected to leave Thailand on Monday evening for Australia….”

“The United States could suspend all legal immigration to the country for the next 40 years and maintain a workforce where there are still more than two U.S. workers for every one retiree, a new study finds.
The latest study by the Center for Immigration Studies’ Steven Camarota reveals that despite claims by the big business lobby, Wall St., and corporate executives that mass legal immigration is necessary to maintain a sizeable workforce, current legal immigration trends have little to no impact on the working-age population.
The workforce population is generally measured by the ratio showing the number of U.S. workers per every one retiree. Camerota’s research finds that if the U.S. implemented an immigration moratorium for the next 40 years, it would hardly have an impact on the number of workers per retirees.
For example, at current legal immigration levels where the U.S. imports more than 1.2 million legal immigrants a year — at the detriment of American workers’ job prospects and wages — the working-age population would decrease from 64.3 percent of the total population in 2017 to 59 percent in 2060.
Likewise, under a scenario where the U.S. halted all legal immigration, the working-age population would dip to about 56.7 percent of the total population by 2060 — only a 2.3 percent difference from projections where current mass legal immigration trends continue.
The ratio of U.S. workers per retiree would be little changed if lawmakers halted legal immigration for 40 years. With current legal immigration levels, the U.S. is on track to have about 2.5 workers per retiree by 2060.
Should legal immigration be halted, the U.S. would have about 2.1 workers per retiree by 2060, a subtle difference in the working-age population.
At the same time, continuing current legal immigration levels for the next 40 years would dramatically increase the total U.S. population to an unprecedented 404.5 million by 2060. This would mean that in less than half a century, 80 million residents would be added to America’s population due to current legal immigration levels.
If the U.S. implemented an immigration moratorium for the next four decades, though, the U.S. population would stabilize at a healthy 329.2 million — an increase of only about four million residents.
As Breitbart News has reported, immigration moratoriums are not uncommon in American history. Currently, there are 44.5 million foreign-born residents living in the country, a 108-year record high. This comes after about four decades of mass legal immigration to the U.S. that, if continued, is likely to hand electoral dominance to Democrats.
The country’s last immigration boom — between 1900 and 1920 — was eventually met with a near immigration moratorium. Between 1925 and 1966, the yearly U.S. legal immigration level did not exceed 327,000 admissions, a four-decades-long near moratorium that allowed the massive inflows of immigrants from before 1925 the ability to assimilate.
Since major changes were enacted in 1965 and in the 1990s to the U.S. legal immigration system — changes that allow foreign nationals to bring as many foreign relatives to the country as they want — legal immigration levels have continued booming for more than five decades.
The number of legal immigrants admitted to the U.S. every year since 1980 has not dipped below 525,000. Since 1999, annual legal immigration levels have not dropped below 645,000. And since 2004, the number of legal immigrants admitted to the U.S. every year has not dipped below 957,000 admissions a year.
Every one percent increase in the immigrant composition of an American workers’ occupation reduces their weekly wages by about 0.5 percent, researcher Steven Camarotta concludes. This means the average native-born American worker today has their wage reduced by perhaps 8.5 percent because of current legal immigration levels.
Likewise, every one percent increase in the immigrant composition of low-skilled U.S. occupations reduces wages by about 0.8 percent. Should 15 percent of low-skilled jobs be held by foreign-born workers, it would reduce the wages of native-born American workers by perhaps 12 percent.
The Washington, DC-imposed mass legal immigration policy is a boon to corporate executives, Wall Street, big business, and multinational conglomerates, as America’s working and middle class have their wealth redistributed to the country’s top earners through wage stagnation.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Hungary on Monday, on the first leg of a European tour, hoping that economic and defence incentives will dissuade Prime Minister Viktor Orban from getting too close to Russia.
Pompeo is set to meet Orban on the one-day trip to Budapest, from where he will proceed to Slovakia, another NATO ally that has seen few recent senior US visitors.
The focus of Pompeo’s trip to Europe is a US-driven conference on the Middle East in Poland later this week, which has been toned down after European allies were uneasy about promoting President Donald Trump’s hawkish line on Iran.
Orban is one of the few European leaders to praise Trump, sharing the mogul-turned-president‘s antipathy for migrants and his belief in promoting a Christian cultural identity.
While the previous president, Barack Obama, tended to cold-shoulder Orban, the Trump administration has taken the opposite tack, but the strategy has little to show for it so far.
US officials said that Pompeo will discuss ways to increase defence and economic cooperation with Hungary.
While Hungary is treaty-bound to the United States through NATO, US officials are pushing for progress on a bilateral defence cooperation agreement, which would let US forces move freely in the country.
Such an agreement could prove controversial if Hungary is the stage for a US military operation. And it would be sure to irritate President Vladimir Putin, who has considered Orban his closest friend in the European Union.
Putin visited Budapest twice last year, with Orban welcoming him in defiance of Western efforts to isolate him over Moscow’s support to separatist insurgents in Ukraine and its 2014 annexation of Crimea.
The United States has also voiced worries over Hungary’s growing relationship with China, including an agreement for telecom giant Huawei to develop the country’s fifth-generation mobile networks.
Washington has been ramping up pressure on Huawei — with senior executives of the company arrested in US allies Canada and Poland.
It warns that China could come to dominate the next wave of technology, with grave repercussions for the protection of individual data and the safety of infrastructure.
Hungary has said it has no plans to revisit the decision to award the 5G networks contract to Huawei. And critics say that Washington’s concerns have as much to do with preserving US commercial dominance as with security.

Pompeo also plans to discuss expanding exchanges between the US and Hungary to strengthen Hungarian independent media and the ability of law enforcement to crack down on corruption, officials said.
The US has voiced alarm over the direction Hungary has taken in these areas recently, including a decision last year to return two Russian arms dealers home rather than to extradite them to face charges in the United States.
And the PRESTIGIOUS Central European University last year moved its key programmes out of Hungary after the government — rejecting direct appeals from the US ambassador — cracked down on educational institutions considered foreign.
The university was founded by George Soros, the US-Hungarian billionaire and CHAMPION OF LIBERAL VALUES , who has been vilified by the far-right in both countries with imagery that is at times anti-Semitic.
Joerg Forbrig, an expert on Central Europe at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, doubted that the Trump administration could change Orban.
The European Union has for years tried to use its power of the purse to REFORM Orban but to no avail, with Hungary wilfully exercising its veto within the 28-member bloc.
“The Hungarian government has been completely defiant to anything that the US may have wanted and there seems to be very little that anyone can do about it,” Forbrig said.

He emigrated to the United States and serves as the imam of the Al-Zahraa Islamic Center of Michigan.

Right-wing parties triumphed in a regional election in central Italy on Monday in a contest seen as a key test for the European Parliament elections in May.
A candidate from Brothers of Italy, a small far-Right party backed by the Right-wing League party and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, won the election in the mountainous Abruzzo region.
After taking around 48 per cent of the vote, Marco Marsilio was elected the new governor of the region, ousting a centre-Left coalition.
The anti-establishment Five Star Movement, which governs with The League at the national level, performed dismally, winning just 20 per cent of votes – half of what it garnered in the region during last year’s general election.
The result will inflame worries within Five Star that it has been eclipsed since forming a coalition with Matteo Salvini’s League last June.
Since then, the pugnacious interior minister has doubled his party’s electoral support while that of Five Star has declined.
With the coalition partners clashing over a wide range of issues, there is speculation that Mr Salvini might choose to ditch Five Star, engineer an election and form a Right-wing coalition, especially if his party performs strongly in May in the European polls.
He dismissed any idea of radical change on Monday, however, saying that the composition of the coalition would not alter.
“Nothing changes for the government – no reshuffle. Work continues,” said Mr Salvini, whose popularity surged after he closed Italian ports to NGO boats rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.
The minister meanwhile weighed in on Italy’s wildly popular San Remo festival, criticising the winner – a 27-year-old Italian singer called Alessandro Mahmood whose father is Egyptian.
Mr Salvini said he would rather have seen the festival, a popular extravaganza of glitz and schmaltz watched by 10 million viewers, won by a singer called Ultimo, whose real name is Niccolo Moriconi.
His comment was interpreted by some as an attack on multiculturalism and a snide dig at someone he regards as not being ‘pure’ Italian, despite the fact that Mr Mahmood was born in Milan and describes himself as “100 per cent Italian”.
The minister’s ex-girlfriend, a TV presenter who in November dumped him publicly on social media, took a very different view.
“Mahmood has just won the San Remo festival – showing that the meeting of different cultures produces beauty,” Elisa Isoardi wrote in a tweet.

The local election in Abruzzo, a region east of Rome, was the first in which M5S and the League have been pitted against each other since they formed their uneasy national government coalition last June.

The vote in the Abruzzo region laid bare the difficulties for the Five Star Movement (M5S), which was the country’s leading party at last year’s general election but has seen its popularity recede since taking power in an uneasy coalition with the League.
The anti-immigration League, led by hardline Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, won 28 percent in Abruzzo’s local elections on Sunday, compared with 19 percent for M5S, the interior ministry said.
M5S candidate Sara Marcozzi said it was “not a defeat for M5S but for democracy”.
The regional vote is seen as a test of strength for both parties ahead of the European elections in May.
Success in the European polls would strengthen the League’s hand further, with expectations that this would spur Salvini into “engineering” an early election in a bid to rule alone.
While the M5S won 33 percent in the general election last year, far outstripping the League’s 17 percent, it has since watched the rise of Salvini’s party.
Both M5S head Luigi Di Maio and Salvini had campaigned heavily in the mountainous Abruzzo region ahead of the weekend vote.
The center-left, which has struggled to put up a united front against the populists, had a strong showing with 31 percent.
The League is now favoured by 34 percent of Italian voters, according to an Ipsos poll released today.
Salvini was accused of violating election laws after he posted a tweet on election day asking people in Abruzzo to vote for the League.
No campaigning is allowed the day before the election and while the polls are still open, according to Italian electoral law. As Interior Minister, Salvini is the one responsible for ensuring that this law is followed.

The Home Secretary said the causes of violent crime are “complex” and require collective action. Pledging to do everything in his power to give those working on the frontline the tools they need to end the bloodshed, he defended the Government’s proposed new knife crime prevention orders. The powers could be used to impose curfews or restrictions on social media use on anyone aged 12 or over who police suspect of carrying a blade.
Although they are civil orders, breaches will be a criminal offence that could result in up to two years in prison upon conviction.
While the plans have been backed by police chiefs, critics have said they are “flawed” and risk unnecessarily criminalising young people.
In an article for The Times Red Box, Mr Javid insisted the case for the orders is “clear”.
They were requested by police and have cross-party support, he said, emphasising that he did not want to see young people “condemned to a life of crime”.
Ministers and police have come under sustained pressure to get a grip on violent crime.
Last week it was disclosed that the number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales had risen to its highest level since records started more than 70 years ago.
Official statistics show there were 285 homicides where the method of killing was by a knife or sharp instrument in the year to March 2018.
This was the highest number since the Home Office’s Homicide Index began in 1946.
Mr Javid said: “I am determined to prevent violent crime scarring our society, terrorising our communities and, most devastatingly, destroying the lives of our next generation.
“The causes of violent crime are complex, and while I wish there was just one solution to end this, there is no magic wand we can wave.””

“Racial discrimination against Africans “is endemic” in Belgium’s institutions and the nation needs to apologize for the crimes committed during its colonization of Congo and make reparations, U.N. experts said Monday.
Belgium’s actions in Congo have long been criticized as one of the worst examples of colonial abuse. Writer Adam Hochschild alleged in his 1998 book “King Leopold’s Ghost” that Leopold reigned over the mass deaths of millions of Congolese.
“The root causes of present-day human rights violations lie in the lack of recognition of the true scope of the violence and injustice of colonization,” the U.N. Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent said in an interim report on Belgium.
King Leopold’s reign over Congo from 1885 to 1908 was notorious for its brutality. After Leopold handed over Congo to the Belgian state, the tiny nation continued to hold sway over an area 80 times its size half a world away until Congo became independent in 1960.
The UN group says racism in Belgium continues today.
“(We are) concerned about the human rights situation of people of African descent in Belgium who experience racism and racial discrimination,” it said. “There is clear evidence that racial discrimination is endemic in institutions in Belgium.”
The U.N. group said Belgium should consider reparations to the Congolese “with a view to closing the dark chapter in history and as a means of reconciliation and healing.”
It added that the Belgian government needs “to issue an apology for the atrocities committed during colonization.”
The U.N. group, which will present its final conclusions in September, lauded the Belgian government for its willingness to combat racism.
The Belgian prime minister’s office said the government will read and assess the report before making any comments.”

President Donald Trump accused Democratic leadership on Sunday of orchestrating a government shutdown to distract attention away from the current news cycle that has been beneficial to the Republican party.
“I don’t think the Dems on the Border Committee are being allowed by their leaders to make a deal,” Trump tweeted. “They are offering very little money for the desperately needed Border Wall & now, out of the blue, want a cap on convicted violent felons to be held in detention!”

Will rent control — which harms the economy and reduces the supply of housing — come to liberal areas of Virginia? It could, if Democrats take control of the Virginia legislature in 2019. A Democratic legislature might vote to water down Virginia’s strict “Dillon Rule,” which prevents cities and counties from regulating in areas not delegated to them by the state legislature. In many states, local governments can adopt rent control. But local governments in Virginia cannot do so, for the time being, because Virginia has a strict “Dillon Rule.” Thanks partly to judicially-ordered redistricting, Democrats are expected to take control of both chambers of the Virginia legislature this fall.
Support for rent control is growing among progressives: With the backing of Gov. Kate Brown (D), Oregon’s liberal government is poised to adopt America’s first statewide rent control regime, which the Wall Street Journal says will harm the state’s economy and housing market.
