   As the news media completes its credibility death spiral and transitions from objective reporting to subjective editorializing, it’s worth looking at the various types of “journalists” who enabled the descent.
   I’ve spent years exploring and documenting the media’s credibility crisis, only to have much of my work destroyed forever by partisan forces like those at Twitter who wipe out right-minded accounts — and all of their content — on a whim. But these pages at my website still maintain a respectable paper trail of media bias auditing and analysis. And ultimately, the most meaningful conclusions are here…
   Media bias in 2019 isn’t about absence of fact. It’s about the prominence of partisan characterization. The fact might be “John went to the store for milk.” That’s the fact. At Fox News, that story becomes “John went to the store for milk because he wants to provide for his family.” At CNN, the story is “John went to the store for milk because he doesn’t trust his wife to do it.” And all of those things might be true. It might be true that John wants to provide for his family, and that he doesn’t trust his wife to get the right milk. But those elements of the story are subjective in nature, and not actually part of the straight news. The straight news, simply, is that John went to the store for milk. But you won’t hear that straight news story anymore. And while liberals will complain that Fox News often tells their version from a right-minded perspective, conservatives note that NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, NYT, WaPo, virtually all of our nation’s newspapers and literally all of academia and Hollywood — are all in lock-step telling stories from a decidedly left-minded perspective. And they do it 24×7 in every facet of everyone’s lives, even when we’re not looking for news or politics.
   This is why honest observers will note that while Fox News does tend toward a right-minded bias, it’s far more troubling and destructive that literally every other form of media, including entertainment, tells the story with left-minded bias. (And they get a lot of help from the liberal partisans in academia who are similarly destroying the credibility of once-revered colleges and universities.)
   Moreover, Fox News admits their partisanship in primetime by letting opinion hosts run the show(s). CNN, on the other hand, claims with a straight face that Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper are impartial and unbiased journalists delivering straight news. It’s laughable, and it’s the foremost reason the media’s credibility is completely shot for a generation or more.
   And it’s not just a CNN problem. Yes, CNN is the most glaring and easy to pick on because they’re so wildly over-the-top with their partisanship, dishonesty and bias. But it’s a problem that plagues virtually the entire media institution. They have all transitioned from being credible, impartial, unbiased, straight news mediums — to almost entirely subjective and opinion-based propagandists who spend 2% of the time reporting actual facts, and the remaining 98% framing and characterizing those facts to fit their partisan narratives/agendas.
   So what’s the psychology behind the individual “journalists” who drove and enabled the media’s credibility crisis? Well I’ve spent some time thinking about it and landed on these three subsets…
   1) They know they’re being dishonest and partisan but claim (without evidence) to be impartial because their partisan ideology eclipses any sense of journalistic integrity
   2) They’re so tightly bonded to their own sanctimony that they truly believe they’re being honest and non-partisan (this nears a state of psychosis which can also be seen in the atrocious behavior of their otherwise lucid supporters)
   3) They know they’re being dishonest and partisan but can’t stop or admit it because it will destroy their own career(s)
   The vast majority of today’s partisan hacks masquerading as impartial journalists no doubt fall into the first two categories. It’s hard to believe that any could survive very long in the third category, but there must be at least a few out there who actually know what they’re doing and don’t like it, but see no path forward in their chosen careers without enabling the charade.
   Regardless, those are the three psychological buckets that most of today’s allegedly impartial media must fall into. If you can think of others, let me know! But amid my hiatus from the painfully redundant and seemingly futile world of media analysis and political activism, this is something I thought about that felt worth jotting down on paper.
   If you voted for President Trump then you already know the media is largely the opposition party; they have become nothing more than anti-Trump propagandists, dwarfing the Democrat party in ferocity, stamina and scope. And at some point it’s not a bad idea to know your opposition. In terms of the individual members of the media community, now you have a little more to work with in terms of the DNA that allows them to so casually lie to the American people and destroy the credibility of the entire media institution…
   Group 1 is aware of their bias but happy to lie about it because they think what they’re doing is morally just. (These are the traditional liberals, as many in the grassroots and leadership roles adopt the same ends-justify-the-means rationalizations.)
   Group 2 is so deeply consumed by their partisan leanings that they can’t even cope with the reality that they’re manufacturing propaganda as opposed to reporting straight news. (These are the more dangerous liberals who are so married to their beliefs that they’ll often promote violence and attack free speech all in the name of “progress.”)
   Group 3 is the least egregious and also the least densely-populated category. They’re hostages who toe a line they dare not step out of lest they be ostracized from the industry and forced to find new careers. (This group may or may not be liberal at all, but they’re entirely neutered either way. They’re witnesses to the media’s Trump-era trust descent, yet they say nothing. They’re also not true believers in, or sufficiently committed to, the other two groups’ partisan mission. They have no credibility on either side of the debate, and are effectively impaled on fence they’ve chosen to ride.)

2. I’m not sure what’s more worrisome: First, there’s hypersonic missile technology itself. Then there’s the notion that Communist China or Russia would ever be honest players in a trilateral arms control pact when neither can be trusted to split a bar tab.

       This sort of zero interval launch–boom technology creates entire new tiers and layers of defense. Fortunately, existing technology can address most of the countermeasures requirements. None of which wholly mitigates the hazards involved.

       That OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act) Loop contains hints as to the real problems involved. Much of this turf was covered in the development of nuclear deterrence strategies—especially, the evolution of retaliatory counterstrikes into “Launch on Warning”.

       As this clip rightly notes, the brisk pace set by hypersonic weapons challenges decision-making times and their paths. Below is a preview of this morning’s scribblings for a new Notes from NorseRadish that arose while composing this reply.

       To wit, in digital designs there is a rate-limiting factor called Propagational Delay. Coders and computer hardware specialists will recognize this as a system’s Cycle Time and, indeed, the two parameters are conjoined.

       This delay addresses the speed with which solid state gates, registers, buses, and storage are able to receive and re-transmit data. Cray supercomputers pushed this cycle time envelope by using GaAs (Gallium Arsenide) integrated circuitry instead of silicon architecture. This finicky material is more often associated with light emitting diodes and only the lethargic rise times of silicon gates made its exorbitant price tag digestible.

       Logic circuits based on these III-IV devices have a massive energy budget and blowtorch-levels of heat dissipation (i.e., release). In return, for their historic era, these supercomputers delivered the equally blistering computational capabilities needed for state of the art applications like global weather prediction and slightly less demanding tasks such as, oh let’s say … simulating thermonuclear events, decrypting ultra-secure signals traffic, and (virtual wind tunnel) modeling the aerodynamics of very large or extremely high-speed jet aircraft.

       As weapons and countermeasures improved in performance—just like microprocessor cycle times—acceptable decision-making delays shrank and command paths contracted down to a Lilliputian realm where the maddening siren-song of AI (Artificial Intelligence) beckons. All of this is enclosed within the still-collapsing bubble of Cold Warrior imperative thought colloquially known as, “use ‘em or lose ‘em”.

       Consider reading the seminal works of Herman “Thinking about the Unthinkable” Kahn for further illumination as to how things have evolved from deterrent-based ‘threat of launch’, over to ‘retaliatory launch’, and now—far more dangerously—‘launch on warning’ status. This third and most risky mentality tends to become highly dependent upon remote sensing arrays (e.g., DEW line radars or satellite-based mosaic CCD stare-down cameras that watch for by silo exhaust blast rings from ICBM liftoffs). Any abrupt or otherwise unexpected cross-platform failure of such detector configurations (for whatever reason, even a solar flare) easily could tempt one side or the other into a massive, preemptive nuclear strike.

       A parable for this conundrum comes from the middle to late 1900s. The post-WW II era brought forth a technology called “Source Guided Missiles”. Much like how air-to-air Sidewinders home in on a jet’s thermal exhaust, these munitions specifically aim themselves towards EMF emitters like radars, communications, and active sensing (e.g., aiming) systems.

       Gigahertz (e.g., military I/J- band radars) and RF transmitters degrade these threats by using agile frequency-hopping strategies that interfere with successful guidance lock-ons. Nevertheless, such ECMs (Electronic Counter-Measures) are not a silver bullet. A prime example is the numerous litters of kittens had by onboard defensive system designers and fleet officers as they hammered out a procedure for shutting down an entire warship’s emissive systems in three minutes or less.

       No competent defense engineer would ever recommend having a single “kill switch” that instantly disconnected power to all emitters. Just the chances of single point failure (in the actual switch circuitry itself) or the dreadful possibility of some rogue element commandeering the control of it, represent fundamental violations of good design principals.

       The speed with which a battleship can “go dark” exemplifies this hypersonic missile debacle—without any mention of their difficulty to safely abort inflight and near-impossibility to recall. Having several minutes of time between their standoff launch-point and arrival on target, earlier generation, slower air-to-ship Exocet missiles spawned development of—and eventually were countered with—Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapons System) Gatling guns. This repurposed M163 VADS (Vulcan Air Defense System) is affectionately known to US sailors as, “R2D2”. That said, the CIWS microwave radar’s response time is too sluggish and, ergo, of zero use for any interdiction of inbound hypersonics.

       Source-guided missiles, “dark ships”, CIWS guns, and hypersonics all represent classic round-robin escalations of measures and countermeasures that the military industrial complex thrives upon. Centered in this technological whirlpool is a vortex where life-and-death decisions intersect precariously with zero-delay mandates. In this nuclear age, such foreshortened timelines invite disastrous mistakes. Even just the allure (not any reality) of having autonomous AI systems take over these onerous duties is a peril of such magnitude that words fail.

       To close: In an age of miniaturized nuclear weapons, hypersonic delivery systems—with their compact form factors, small visibility profiles, and difficulty of interception—contract OODA Loops in unimaginably dangerous ways.

       Much like sloppily managed Third World R&D into viral and biochemical agents or Iran’s scantily veiled nuclear missile program, the existence of such eye-blink offensive weapons destabilizes large swaths of secure and insecure regions alike.

       As noted, I wouldn’t let either one of those tuxedoed Asian gangsters settle up an evening’s bar tab—much less trust them not to proliferate a technology that enables plausibly deniable proxy strikes (conventional or nuclear).

       Putting both parties on notice that (if feasible) American geosynchronous look-down, hypersonic transit detection satellites will be positioned over each respective nation might be a first step. If any one of these orbital platforms is “dazzled” or “blinded” long enough to conceal a hypersonic test flight, then the offending party would be held responsible for future proliferation or attacks made with that technology.

       Be that as it may, I doubt this tactic would work because, for instance, the US would need to accept similar monitoring. And we all know that there’s nothing to prevent Russia or Communist China from orbiting a massive phased array radar which possibly could track all North American air traffic.

   According to police, clashes between biker gangs are currently endangering public safety in Cologne. Police commissioner Uwe Jacob said on Wednesday that high-grade guns are being fired in the middle of Cologne’s streets. It’s as if we were here in the Wild West. It is a lucky coincidence that nobody has died yet, said Klaus-Stephan Becker, head of the Crime Department. It was a conflict between Bandidos and Hells Angels that was building up more and more. These are not bikers in the true sense of the word, but criminal gangs pursuing solid economic interests. The gangs are clearly dominated by migrants. Some of the members came from Turkey, Kosovo and North Africa.

5. THE WORLD IS UPSIDE DOWN.

   This morning I read the post below, one from Alan Medforth’s blog. Here follow a few comments related to it.
   I once travelled to and in Gambia (the country where the young man here highlighted hails from) and remember well that I did my very best to be courteous and generous and behave decently. I also once worked for a few years in a Middle Eastern country, one in which some of my foreign (western) colleagues lost their jobs (out, on a plane, within two days, even after many years of service) for such offenses as walking while still dressed in shorts and singlet on a street near a beach, or having a mild verbal altercation with a local driver (admittedly one of some social rank and status). One thing I remember very well is that we didn’t complain; another is that there were no chanting, screaming, possibly violent locals at the airport, battling the “fascist” police to prevent our deportation. (Obviously enough, it never crossed one’s mind that there might be.)

   Fast forward a few years and change the place. ANYONE can come into Europe now. “Anyone” includes the worst trash that any particular country has produced. They can come without documents. They can mutter, say or scream “ASYLUM” and they can stay. The capitalisation of the word “temporarily” in the article below is my change. Maybe it doesn’t mean here in this case that he was let onto the street after the police had asked him if he wouldn’t mind giving his name etc. but many times it does mean that. This scum can do pretty well what it wants and be released time and again and again and again and again. I suspect, too, that none of their behaviour affects the outcome of their asylum claims.

   Something else that bothers me is that the law-abiding in Europe have to obey immigration and maximum-stay regulations but said scum doesn’t. Unfair? I think “yes”.

   If this Gambian gets even as little as two years in prison, I’ll be surprised.

   The Ravensburg criminal investigation department is investigating a 24-year-old Gambian asylum seeker for attempted, particularly serious extortion, who entered a bank branch in Schwalweg Street at 11.30 a.m. on Monday and wanted to withdraw money. Due to insufficient funds, an employee could not fulfill his demand, which is why he became aggressive and “fidgeted” with a knife in front of her. Before he left the bank, the 24-year-old screamed, threw chairs on the floor and kicked a radiator. He then grabbed a donation box set up at the counter and left the bank in a scolding manner.Alarmed police officers were able to overpower the Gambian man not far from the crime scene and arrest him TEMPORARILY. On his way to the office, he not only defied and insulted the instructions of the police officers, but also tried to head-butt an officer. At the request of the public prosecutor’s office, the young man will be brought before a magistrate today, Tuesday. He will now have to answer for attempted, particularly severe predatory blackmail, attempted bodily harm and insult to the detriment of police officers.

   This from ZeroHedge in its entirety because they offer valid opinion. Carney offers honesty up until he must address gold, then lies about the causes leading up to August 15, 1971. France under De Gaul was pulling its gold from the U.S. through the international redemption window because they saw it imperiled by U.S. spending. The “inelasticity” Carney blames on gold is false. There WAS elasticity which allowed for expansion of the money supply and subsequent payment for the Vietnam war. The only problem was that this expansion was costing the U.S. its gold, which was not gold’s fault. So Carney is being disingenuous on this topic, which is expected of a Keynesian. What is disappointing, however, is why he did not use the opportunity to introduce the concept of Freegold to a wider audience. This is the inevitable future of the next reserve currency in some form or another–necessity being the mother of invention, and all. I’ve posted on Freegold many times so won’t bother again. Suffice to say it is about one currency for a medium of exchange and another for saving.

    Blaming US law enforcement agencies for preventing them from “speaking the truth”, The Dark Overlord has unblocked the next batch after it has reached a certain milestone of payments from a curious public. “We can’t allow the mainstream media to silence the truth any longer. We must ensure their propaganda is crushed by the truths we’re dealing today”, they said in a statement.

    “Layer 2”, as the dump is nicknamed, comprises over 7,500 files. Just like the first layer, which was decrypted last week, this batch has failed to provide any sensational material such as the government concealing information about the attacks.

    The newly released docs largely concern correspondence between insurance companies that were handling the claims stemming from the tragedy. They were discussing who the damages could be claimed for, with options ranging from airlines to the Federal Aviation Authority and terrorists. The litigators were also speculating on whether then-President George W. Bush or the Saudi royal family had foreknowledge of the attacks, but this correspondence fails to provide evidence of government involvement.

    The hacking collective claims that they have obtained thousands of documents from a US-based solicitor firm. They have split the treasure trove into five “layers”, with each subsequent layer standing for more sensitive and highly confidential data.

    They offered everyone concerned the opportunity to come and get the docs — for a Bitcoin ransom of an unspecified amount. The group has apparently failed to obtain it from government agencies and firms; furthermore, they have been banned from Twitter and Reddit as well as their most recent platform of choice, the open-source blockchain platform Steemit.

    Layer 1 mostly included FBI interviews with American Airlines employees and relatives of passengers on the 9/11 planes, as well as confidentiality agreements and insurance pay-outs.

    There’s more to come, however, the hackers tease, with Layer 3 containing as many as 8,279 files. In the end, they threatened, their revelation would “bury” the US “deep state” and trump “Snowden’s finest work”.”

    Commenting on the Polish-Italian agreement on strengthening the EU’s external border, Orban said it was “one of the greatest developments that this year could have started with”, and indicated that he could only welcome the move. “I am pinning great hopes on this,” he said.

    The prime minister also accused Germany of disrespecting Hungarians’ position on the migration issue, and said that he feels constant pressure from Berlin to let migrants in.

    Macron has been embroiled in a conflict with populist leaders in Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Austria over his stance on the migrant crisis. Last June, the French president threatened to sanction EU member states which refused migrants with proven asylum status, saying Paris could not accept a situation where “countries that benefit massively from EU solidarity” give in to “national self-interest when it comes to the issue of migrants”.     The European Union has faced a major political crisis over its members’ varying responses to the so-called refugee crisis which began in 2015. The EU’s Central and Eastern European member states have refused to accept migrants on a mass scale, and balked at Brussels’ proposal of refugee quotas. The present crisis is the most serious migration-related issue that Europe has faced since the Second World War, and stems from the armed conflicts and economic problems plaguing many African and Middle Eastern countries.”

    Shehan Hettiaratchy, major trauma director at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, added: “In the last calendar year, we saw about 650 stab victims in our hospital.

    “Fatalities attract the headlines, but we know from our own data that for every one person who comes into hospital and dies from knife wounds, we have about another 50 who are injured by knife crime.

    “There is a huge number of people who are injured by knife crime and these are injuries which leave them with permanent disabilities.

    “We have seen a lot of people who have been stabbed in the legs. Clearly they are stabbing someone in the legs because they are not trying to kill them.

    “You can cut the main nerve that runs down the back of the leg and you don’t recover from that. You won’t be able to run properly again, walk properly again.”

    “The American Psychological Association (APA) has released guidelines that teach psychologists working with men and boys that “traditional masculinity is psychologically harmful.”

    According to an APA announcement, the release of Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men comes after a review of more than 40 years of research showing that men who are not emotionally expressive are damaged and end up with serious behavior problems.

    According to the APA announcement:

    Men commit 90 percent of homicides in the United States and represent 77 percent of homicide victims. They’re the demographic group most at risk of being victimized by violent crime. They are 3.5 times more likely than women to die by suicide, and their life expectancy is 4.9 years shorter than women’s. Boys are far more likely to be diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder than girls, and they face harsher punishments in school—especially boys of color.

    “Though men benefit from patriarchy, they are also impinged upon by patriarchy,” said Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Akron and co-editor of The Psychology of Men and Masculinities, published by APA.

    APA says the guidelines teach that traditional masculinity, “marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression—is, on the whole, harmful.”

    “Men socialized in this way are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors,” the group asserts.

    However, Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, tells Breitbart News that APA “has apparently joined in the war against men, proposing to solve their problems by gelding them, turning them into what C.S. Lewis called ‘men without chests.’”

    She notes:

    Striving hard against obstacles is a problem? Stoicism and self-reliance are not virtues, but are pathological? Without men’s courage, aggressiveness, risk-taking, and single-minded dedication to problem-solving, we’d still be in caves, if we survived at all.

    The organization says that, while psychological studies of the past often used only white men and boys as subjects, they failed to take “men’s gendered experiences into account.”

    Adopting the ideology of gender identity and gender fluidity, APA explains that, in the past, “Researchers assumed that masculinity and femininity were opposite ends of a spectrum, and ‘healthy’ psychology entailed identifying strongly with the gender roles conferred by a person’s biological sex.”

    “What is gender in the 2010s?” Ryon McDermott, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of South Alabama who also contributed to the men’s guidelines, asks, according to APA. “It’s no longer just this male-female binary.”

    Once APA tackled its Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Girls and Women in 2007, some of the same contributors to that volume moved on to the guidelines for work with men and boys, the group says.

    In its new guidelines, APA is teaching its clinicians they should be aware of what they call these “dominant masculine ideals,” as well as “their own potential biases.”

    “Mental health professionals must also understand how power, privilege and sexism work both by conferring benefits to men and by trapping them in narrow roles,” the group says. “They should consider how stoicism and a reluctance to admit vulnerability hamstring men in personal relationships, and they should combat these forces, in part, by encouraging fathers to engage more fully with their children.”

    “Men and women are not the same,” Orient asserts, however. “Trying to homogenize them will destroy both. Women need the strength and protective instincts of their men, and men need the love and faithful support of their women.””

    Mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris said earlier this week that the migrant transport NGO Sea Watch was welcome to dock in his city, saying: “I have already asked the commander, then he will make the assessments based on the weather and many things, that if he directs the bow towards Naples, the port of Naples, now, while we speak, it is open.”

    The offer was countermanded by Salvini in his role as interior minister, who reiterated that Italian ports were closed to migrant transport vessels — a policy that has managed to reduce the number of migrants entering Italy by 80 percent and has contributed to there being far fewer drowning deaths in the Mediterranean Sea in 2018 than in previous years, likely as a result of sea crossings being deterred.

    The poll also found that Salvini’s League (Lega) still holds the top spot among Italy’s political parties with 31.8 per cent support, although the figure has dropped slightly from last month’s 33.2 per cent.

    The arrests were made in the cities of Palermo, Trapani, Caltanissetta, and Brescia this week with the 15 suspects facing various criminal charges from forming a criminal association for the purposes of illegal immigration and smuggling to terrorism-related charges, newspaper Il Giornale reports.

    The former jihadi blew the lid on the Islamist fighter-smuggling operation, saying to the police: “I’m telling you what I know because I want to prevent you from finding an army of kamikaze in Italy.”

    One of the suspects was of particular interest to the police after they found that he had posted pro-Islamic State propaganda on Facebook and had called on others to martyr themselves in the name of Allah.

    The Palermo anti-mafia prosecutor said the individual had also been a member of a Facebook group that put him in contact with other known radical Islamic extremists.

    Prosecutors added that the organisation, which largely smuggled jihadists from Tunisia, “constitutes a current and concrete threat to national security because it is able to provide several illegal immigrants with a hidden, safe, and fast maritime passage.”

    They added that the organisation was “particularly attractive” to those who were being sought by Tunisian police and security forces including those who could be linked to terrorism.

    The arrests come after Tunisian authorities seized a boat of illegal immigrants heading for Italy last August that was revealed to have been more than half-full with radical Islamists, with nine of the 15 people on board linked to terror.

    The seizure followed an Interpol warning in February of last year that claimed up to 50 Tunisian Islamic radicals had made the voyage to Italy as illegal migrants.”

    The Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) has found that parents in Thurrock, South-East England, “have objected to the teaching of Islam and withdrawn children from lessons and visits to places of worship,” the Thurrock Gazette reports.

    SACRE, which recommends the teaching of religion in schools, said that it would need to launch an investigation into how many parents are pulling their children from aspects of religious education teaching.

    “The outcome for those children, who arguably are those that most need to be taught about Islam, are no longer being taught about it,” the report continued.

    “It is not clear whether or not this is a widespread issue in Thurrock, but it is clear that SACRE needs to investigate.

    “Schools have a statutory duty to promote community cohesion.”

    Religious education, where children are taught about world religions and sometimes ethics, is compulsory in all state-funded schools, but parents reserve the right to pull their children from all or parts of the lessons.

    In 2017, the Church of England called for the right of parents to pull their children out of RE classes to be banned, complaining that “fundamentalist” parents were “abusing” the option and that it could result in the right being hijacked by those who want to “incite religious hatred”.

    Currently, parents can also withdraw their children from some parts of sex education classes, but the parts related to or taught in science class are compulsory.

    From 2020, all schools, including faith schools, will be forced to teach sex and relationship education, with classes possibly including lessons on online pornography, sexual harrassment, gender identity, and same-sex relationships.

    A prominent Jewish group has warned this week that thousands of Jewish families may leave Britain if their faith schools are forced to teach about LGBT lifestyles, as it conflicts with religious teachings on sexual morality.”

    The large sum of cash comes from the European Research Council, a European Union body focused on scientific and technological research with researchers working on the hypothesis that the Qur’an has had a major impact on Europe throughout history, Il Giornale reports.

    The aim of the research is said to be to “determine how the sacred text of Allah incorporated into the thought of Christians, medieval and modern, Jews, freethinkers, atheists, and European Muslims.”

    The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the main recipient of the grant. Mercedes Garcia Arenal of the CSIC explained the project, which will also involve academics from the Britain, France, and elsewhere, saying: “Our working hypothesis is that the Qur’an has played an important role in European intellectual and religious development, and for this reason we want to study the cultural and religious use that we make of the Qur’an, translated, published, printed, and circulated in Europe from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment.”

    The grant comes after the EU announced it would be cutting off money to conservative Central and Eastern European member-states and funding EU values-based projects instead.

    The Qur’an study project is not the first Islamic project to be funded by the political bloc. In 2017, the EU gave money to an exhibition in Brussels entitled “Islam, It’s also our history!”

    The project gained attention after being delayed due to security concerns over radical Islamic terror and having “art” featuring fake bombs and full-face Islamic veils.”

    The people who wail loudest about the GOP’s supposed “extremism” are the very people who vote against moderates at every opportunity — against moderate Republicans in general elections, and against moderate Democrats in Democratic Primaries.

    In the 2006 election, the socialist singer John Hall, running on the Democratic ticket, ousted the moderate New York Republican Congresswoman Sue Kelly. My brother, who lived in the district, was greeted by a volunteer for the Hall campaign who told him she was opposing Kelly because of the GOP’s supposed “extremism.” Never mind that Kelly was about as close to the political center as a member of Congress could possibly be. Kelly voted with House Democrats about as often as she did with House Republicans, and her legislative score from the American Conservative Union was similar to her score from the liberal Americans for Democratic Action. Kelly was much more fiscally conservative than John Hall. But like Hall, she was liberal on social issues: she was pro-choice on abortion, and as Wikipedia notes, “Kelly was endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, an environmental advocacy group.” In short, she was not a right-wing extremist. And even the GOP as a whole was not extreme in 2006 by historical standards — indeed, it accepted government programs (such as the Medicare prescription drug benefit) that earlier generations of Republicans had opposed as too liberal.

    Tick, tick, tick goes the time bomb of national doom. Every second the ticking grows louder, but you won’t hear the muffled sound that’s more akin to white noise.

    Across all media platforms, the threat goes largely unreported. Perhaps the consequences are unfathomable to discuss in 90-second news segments sandwiched between commercial breaks and panels of talking heads

    Members of Congress from both parties are also deaf to the ticking. Inherently they know that any attempt to defuse the bomb means running the risk of being voted out of office. The same is true at the White House, where Donald Trump, like Barack Obama before him, never mentions this impending catastrophe.

    Four young men are on trial over the brazen theft of a 100-kilogram Canadian gold coin from a Berlin museum.

    The Big Maple Leaf coin, worth several million dollars, was stolen from the Bode Museum in March 2017.

    Three men, identified only as Wissam R., Ahmed R. and Wayci R., are accused of stealing the coin during the night using a wheelbarrow to haul it away.

    The fourth suspect, Dennis W., worked as a guard at the museum for a private security firm and is accused of scouting out the scene.

    Investigators believe the suspects cut up the coin and sold the pieces.

    Three of the four suspects were between ages 18 and 21 at the time of the heist, classifying them as adolescents in Germany, according to court spokesperson Lisa Jani.

    “They have not said anything to this indictment; they prefer to stay silent,” Jani told CBC News.

    She said they have the right to stay silent to avoid self-incrimination.

    The case is being tried in youth court, with the decision to treat them as adults or juveniles to follow, Jani said.

    “Three of the defendants belong to a family here in Berlin that is publicly known for committing crimes, but me as a spokesperson, I’m always very careful because of course belonging to one family and carrying a family name doesn’t make you guilty,” Jani said.

    A dual Swiss-Spanish national arrested in connection with the murder of two Danish and Norwegian hikers in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains in December was receiving Swiss disability benefits for psychiatric problems, a Spanish newspaper reported on Tuesday.

    The 25-year-old who grew up in Geneva believed “he had demons in his head who were telling them what to do” and that “thanks to the Koran he had managed finally learned to control them”, Spain’s El Mundo newspaper reported a Geneva-based friend of the suspect as saying.

    The man began receiving Swiss disability benefits for these psychiatric problems when he turned 18 and continued to receive those benefits after he moved to Morocco in 2015, the man’s friend added in a report that has not been officially confirmed.

    The Swiss-Spanish man was arrested on December 28th for alleged links to the murders of Danish student Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, and 28-year-old Norwegian Maren Ueland who were found dead in the High Atlas, south of Marrakesh on December 17th.

    He is not suspected of personally having taken part in the murders, which are believed to have been carried out by four men belonging to a cell inspired by Islamic State (Isis) group ideology, according to Moroccan counter-terrorism authorities.

    However, the Swiss-Spanish dual national is “suspected of teaching some of those arrested in this case about communication tools involving new technology and of training them in marksmanship,” according to Moroccan authorities.

    He also subscribes to “extremist ideology” and has been involved in the “recruitment of Moroccans and sub-Saharans to carry out terrorist plans in Morocco”, Morocco’s central office for judicial investigations has stated.

    Mother says suspect was in Geneva at time of murders

    Spain’s El Mundo newspaper also spoke to the mother of the Swiss-Spanish dual national who said everything being said about her son was “lies”.

    The woman, who lives in Madrid, said that her son had been in Geneva with family when the murders occurred on December 17th.

    She admitted her son had had a tough adolescence after losing his father at the age of 15, and that he had “smoked a lot of joints, burned cars and had committed a number of robberies.”

    She also said that after living in a youth centre and being introduced to the Koran, her son had “started going to the mosque a lot” but that she had “not noticed anything unusual”.

    She said her son had never had Muslim friends and suspicions that he planned to rob a jewellery store in Switzerland and give the proceeds to so-called Islamic State (Isis) didn’t add up.

    Investigators had not found any evidence, she said.

    In late December, Swiss federal police confirmed that the dual national arrested in Morocco had a criminal record including drug offences, theft, burglary, unlawful entry and domestic violence.

    He left Switzerland in 2015 after suspicions he had become radicalized, the Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) confirmed to Swiss news agency SDA.

    Swiss media on Tuesday reported that the man had started attending the Saudi-funded Geneva Mosque in Le Petit-Saconnex after he converted to Islam.

    The mosque was placed under new management by the Saudi Arabia-based Muslim World League in early 2018 after a series of allegations that some members of staff had links to terrorism.

    Fedpol has refused to comment on the report in the El Mundo newspaper, saying only it remains in close contact with Spanish, Moroccan, Danish and Norwegian authorities.

    He gave full support to an Italian-Polish initiative to form a right-wing alliance for the European Parliament where he hopes anti-immigration parties will gain a majority.

    The Polish and Italian ruling nationalist parties currently sit in different European Parliament groupings to Orban’s Fidesz, which is a member of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP).

    But Orban said he sees that ‘anti-immigration forces capable of governing are searching for different modes of cooperation… and that is good news for both us (Fidesz) and the EPP.’

    Fidesz’s presence in the EPP has been controversial, with critics calling for it to be expelled from the grouping over what they say is Orban’s growing authoritarianism.

    Last September the European Parliament voted to launch unprecedented legal action against Budapest over alleged ‘breaches of democratic values’.

    Orban said that ‘for the first time the European elections will decide on a question that touches all of Europe, that is, immigration.’

    Orban took aim at Macron, whom he called the leader of pro-immigration policies in Europe.

    ‘It is nothing personal, but a matter of our countries’ future,’ Orban said of Macron. ‘If what he wants with regards to migration materialises in Europe, that would be bad for Hungary, therefore I must fight him.’

    Orban also said he saw no chance for a compromise with Germany. He said German politicians and media attack him, often brutally, exerting undue pressure on him to admit migrants.

    Immigration has been the main political vehicle for Orban since 2015, when he was the first leader on the continent to take an extreme hard-line on the issue.

    He built a razor wire fence along Hungary’s southern border to stop it as tens of thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty reached Europe’s shores and border.

    Orban has tightened his grip on power since 2010, defying EU norms and rising to prominence as the continent’s voters increasingly respond to populist agendas.

    While Orban made strides in fixing the economy, his critics have said he has done that while eroding democratic checks and balances, turning much of domestic media into mouthpieces, and using EU funds to bolster businessmen friendly to his regime.

    Orban’s stance set up the prospect of a southern and eastern European axis against a France-German tandem ahead of the EU elections which could redraw the continent’s political map.

    Salvini said during a visit to Warsaw on Wednesday that Italy and Poland should join forces in a euro-sceptic alliance.

    His arrest came under directives of the Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Major General Khalifa Abdulla Al Marri and follow-up of Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation, Maj. Gen. Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri.

    The Director of Al Barsha Police Station, Brigadier Abdul Rahim Bin Shafi’i, narrated that the school’s official contacted the police station complaining that a former director who worked there for 16 years deleted its data.

    The data of the school running 18 branches around the UAE included that of the school itself and that of its students. This contributed to an impact on the course of the study process, the official revealed seeking police help.

    Brigadier Bin Shafi’i explained, “The former IT director submitted his resignation and travelled out of the country then deleted all files, taking advantage of his possession of all secret numbers of access to the school’s data.”

    The police station, the Dubai Police Cybercrime Department and Interpol set up a team to trace and arrest the defendant. Cybercrime Department experts went to the school, recovered deleted files and secured the school network.

    Interpol issued an international arrest warrant and a red notice. Criminal pursuit personnel traced his route up to Europe. He was attempting to transit through Italy when he landed in the hands of cops at its border. Coordination with competent authorities in Italy is underway in order to hand him over to face to justice.

    Bin Shafi’i praised the rapid action made by the school management to contact the police.     He kidnapped the Pakistani visitor, 22, under threats to fine her Dhs500 for having entered the waters and started swimming at an undesignated area. He insisted he had to take her to a police station since she also had no ID.

    He took her to a dark side of the park surrounded by trees and breakwaters. He grabbed her by the hair and seized her mouth while threatening to slap her with a hefty fine in case she shouted for help. He battered her head.

    The terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on the Internet and threatened to carry out more violence in Germany.

    Selahattin Gungor, who is heading the Youth Union of Turkey’s (TGB) Cologne branch, condemned the attack and called on German police to take measures to prevent more attacks.

    PKK sympathizers have recently called for protests in Germany against Turkey’s counterterrorism operations in northern Syria, and organized demonstrations asking for the release of the terrorist group’s jailed so-called founder Abdullah Ocalan.

    The music video shows the rapper acting out the kidnap, torture and hanging of a white man.

    The lyrics, which sparked outrage, call for white babies to be killed.

    Mr Conrad denies the charge, and says the song is a comment on racism.

    The nine-minute video, first published on YouTube in September, was quickly suspended for violating the company’s terms of service.

    It depicts a white man being shot and tortured by the rapper and an accomplice. He is forced to bite the pavement and is kicked in the head before being hanged.

    One section of the lyrics reads: “I go to the nurseries, I kill the white babies. Catch them quick and hang their parents!”

    Anti-racism groups have called the clip an incitement to violence and racial hatred.

    Who is Nick Conrad?
    The 35-year-old French rapper of Cameroonian descent was virtually unknown to the French public before he released his video four months ago.

    He was raised in the suburbs of Paris, and worked as a receptionist at a five-star hotel on Avenue de l’Opera until he lost his job recently. “Nick Conrad” is a pseudonym.

    The charge against Mr Conrad could result in up to five years in prison and €45,000 in fines. Prosecutors have requested a suspended fine of €5,000, saying he has “already to a certain extent paid the consequences”.

    The rapper told the court on Wednesday that the video was obviously a fictional depiction of racism, designed to shock by inverting roles, and therefore not to be taken at face value.

    The scenes are said to be a reference to the film American History X, where white neo-Nazis subjected a black man to similar violent acts.

    The BBC’s Hugh Schofield reports that the prosecution countered this, saying there cannot be exceptions – incitement to violence does not stop just because the intended victim is white.
