Daily Links Post graphic

Each day at just after midnight Eastern, a post like this one is created for contributors and readers of this site to upload news links and video links on the issues that concern this site. Most notably, Islam and its effects on Classical Civilization, and various forms of leftism from Soviet era communism, to postmodernism and all the flavours of galloping statism and totalitarianism such as Nazism and Fascism which are increasingly snuffing out the classical liberalism which created our near, miraculous civilization the West has been building since the time of Socrates.

This document was written around the time this site was created, for those who wish to understand what this site is about. And while our understanding of the world and events has grown since then, the basic ideas remain sound and true to the purpose.

So please post all links, thoughts and ideas that you feel will benefit the readers of this site to the comments under this post each day. And thank you all for your contributions.

This is the new Samizdat. We muse use it while we can.

  1. Richard: The article shows more intelligence then you would expect in a Bloomberg article talking about Socialism. Still it manages to condemn the socialist policies that caused the problem in Venezuela while defending Socialism and saying that those policies don’t always fail. (Yes they do always fail). The author and editor seem to want to have it both says, saying Socialism is good and doesn’t always fail but that socialist policies that the Dems want to bring to the US are the cause for Venezuela’s collapse.

    Venezuela’s Lessons for American Socialists

(Bloomberg Opinion) — It’s hard to overstate how disastrous the reign of Hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro has been for Venezuela. A recent series of Bloomberg articles vividly depicts the hellish, never-ending struggle for survival in Caracas, the country’s capital. Hungry children roam the streets, people are fleeing the country, health care is almost nonexistent, violence is endemic, even water is scarce. Chavez’s so-called Bolivarian revolution took a peaceful, middle-income country and transformed it into a nightmare that puts the ruinous Soviet Union of the 1980s to shame.

It’s important for other countries — including wealthy ones like the U.S. — not to ignore Venezuela, but to use it as a cautionary tale. Politicians like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have embraced socialism, as have many young Americans. But what are the lessons of Venezuela? Why did the country become such a basket case?

    • Richard: Here are some of the policies that the radical left want to bring to the US, if enacted they will turn the US into Venezuela or Cuba. Remember a lot of the Dems and their base think they lost the 2020 election because Hillary didn’t go far enough to the left.

The ‘Green New Deal’: A Radical Mandate for Government Control of American Society
‘Ocasio-Cortez sees this plan is being a vehicle through which social equality might finally realized, as it will use reparations to right historical injustices’
      Jan 2, 2019 9:12 PM
      By Tom Elliott

Incoming New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brings with her a massive online following, influence she says she’ll deploy only in support of candidates and politicians who support her plan for a “Green New Deal.”

“The Green New Deal” is something Ocasio-Cortez invokes frequently in media appearances and rallies.

      So what’s actually in it?

Her office recently released the text of a proposed House rules change outlining the plan.

The proposed rule change for the upcoming 116th Congress would require the creation of a “Select Committee for a Green Deal” that would be responsible for creating the plan by January 1, 2020, with corresponding draft legislation soon after. The text of the rule change lays out the committee’s jurisdiction and required areas of action.

Its scope and mandate for legislative authority amounts to a radical grant of power to Washington over Americans’ lives, homes, businesses, travel, banking, and more.

Early on, under “Jurisdiction,” the document makes clear its grandiose philosophical vision: “The select committee shall have authority to develop a detailed national, industrial, economic mobilization plan for the transition of the United States economy to become greenhouse gas emissions neutral and to significantly draw down greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and oceans and to promote economic and environmental justice and equality.”

In addition to achieving its goal of “meeting 100% of national power demand through renewable sources,” the document also repeatedly states the Green New Deal will advance non-environmental projects, such as, “social, economic, racial, regional and gender-based justice.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s plan further claims it will (virtually) eliminate poverty: “The Plan for a Green New Deal (and the draft legislation) shall recognize that a national, industrial, economic mobilization of this scope and scale is a historic opportunity to virtually eliminate poverty in the United States and to make prosperity, wealth and economic security available to everyone participating in the transformation.”

  2. Lawsuit Claims SPLC Abetted Theft, Spread Lies to Destroy Lawyer for ‘Thought Crime’

In December 2018, a Baltimore lawyer filed a devastating lawsuit against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and two of its employees. The SPLC targeted Glen Keith Allen over his former ties to the National Alliance (NA), a white nationalist group. In doing so, the liberal group allegedly violated laws and legal codes of conduct by receiving and then paying for stolen documents in violation of confidentiality agreements. The group went after Allen with the intent of getting him fired by the city of Baltimore and permanently destroying his future prospects.

Allen’s suit claims that the SPLC should have its 501c3 tax-exempt status revoked, that it owes him restitution for racketeering, and that it should pay $6.5 million in damages. It also references Allen’s pro bono work on behalf of African-Americans and his mentorship of an African-American teen, powerfully rebutting claims that he is a racist. Allen told PJ Media he now regrets his NA support, and an African-American friend of his laughed at the idea of this lawyer being branded a racist.

  3. U.S. warns Iran against space launches, ballistic missiles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States issued a pre-emptive warning to Iran on Thursday against pursuing three planned space rocket launches that it said would violate a U.N. Security Council resolution because they use ballistic missile technology.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran had announced plans to launch in the coming months three rockets, called Space Launch Vehicles (SLV), which he said incorporate technology that is “virtually identical” to that used in intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“The United States will not stand by and watch the Iranian regime’s destructive policies place international stability and security at risk,” Pompeo said in a statement.

  4. North Korea diplomat in Italy missing, South Korean MP says, after asylum report

SEOUL (Reuters) – A North Korean diplomat who was until recently acting ambassador to Italy has gone missing, a South Korean member of parliament said on Thursday, after a South Korean newspaper reported he was seeking asylum in the West.

The diplomat, Jo Song Gil, disappeared with his wife after leaving the embassy without notice in early November, according to Kim Min-ki, a South Korean lawmaker who was briefed by the National Intelligence Service.

    https://www.oann.com/north-korea-diplomat-in-italy-missing-south-korean-mp-says-after-asylum-report/

    • … Jo Song Gil, disappeared with his wife…

I smell defection! If both of them were not subjected to covert preemptive liquidation by a Nork wetworks team—mere steps away from the Embassy’s property line, no doubt—then they stand a good chance of being alive somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Preferably within hailing distance of a reliable CIA station chief (for what that’s worth these days).

That is, if “reliable CIA station chief” hasn’t already devolved into an oxymoron. In earlier days, didn’t it used to be redundant?

      • Defection is what I am thinking of, if so they are being hidden from the NORKs and the Deep State. I wonder what he knew that was worth the work to extract him and his wife and hide them?

  5. Death toll reaches 39 in Russian apartment block collapse: Interfax

MAGNITOGORSK, Russia (Reuters) – Thirty-nine bodies have been pulled from under the rubble of a Russian apartment building that partially collapsed this week after an apparent gas explosion, Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.

The blast in the early hours of December 31 damaged 48 apartments in a 10-storey building in the industrial city of Magnitogorsk, some 1,700 km (1,050 miles) east of Moscow.

The death toll has progressively risen in the past few days as rescuers battle blisteringly cold temperatures to recover people trapped under the rubble.

  6. Possibly another case of a deadly muslim in the health & care professions. A nurse who lived with his mother, wanted to be a doctor. He was caught stealing and fired, forged his certificate of conduct to get another job.
His name is Rahiied A., not 100% sure he’s muslim. I’m not aware of antisemitic or jihadist tweets, but it’s common for such details to be suppressed until conviction:

    • Thank you, C.

I hope everyone at this blog will continue posting links to these proto-medico jihad attacks. Few other forms of Muslim treachery more perfectly exemplify the insane risks posed by taqiyya and niggling little details like Hippocratic Oaths.

  7. Greeks Outraged by Prison Leave for Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment – Reports (sputniknews, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201901031071191319-greece-prison-leave-imprisonment/

“The walks of Greek terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas from the Revolutionary Organization 17 November terror group, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment, in Athens caused public outrage in Greece, local media reported on Thursday.

Koufodinas has got the sixth consecutive prison leave since 2017. His latest “holidays” lasted for six days, the iEfimerida media outlet reported.

According to the media outlet, the Greeks were shocked when saw Koufodinas walking with his son and friends near the places where he and his group staged deadly attacks. Other reports called Koufodinas’ walks in Athens a scandal.

Koufodinas was arrested in 2002 and got 11 life sentences over staging deadly terror attacks.”

  8. Baby Jesus statue ‘BEHEADED’: East London horror at nativity vandalism (express, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1066555/london-news-christmas-nativity-ilford-town-centre-Redbridge

“THE statue of baby Jesus part of a Christmas nativity scene has suffered a brutal ISIS-style ‘beheading’, a vile act branded a “devastating blow” by the head of a local Christian community.

Ilford Town Centre, part of London’s Redbridge borough, became the theatre of “hate crime” just three days before Christmas. Members of the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) installed the statues worth £800 under a Christmas tree after two years ago a group of residents called for “bringing back baby Jesus” to the city centre. But the holiday display, which was meant to be on show until January, was found destroyed by a resident, who was shocked at the sight.

She told the Ilford Recorder: “It is three days before Christmas and this happens.

“Any other religion and there would be an outcry and it would have been fixed already.

“It is a desecration of a religious icon – I am disgusted.”

On top of the beheaded baby Jesus, the woman found the statues of the Virgin Mary and Joseph smashed.

The head of the BPCA, Wilson Chowdhry, opened up on the disbelief and sadness that hit him when he was made aware of the event.

He said: “It is stunning that someone would do this when the intent of the project was to install a reminder in the town centre about the true meaning of Christmas to sit in contrast with all the commercialism.

“I was so excited to be introducing the figurines for only the second year.

“This spiteful act has ruined our nativity, but it cannot destroy the message of Christmas.

“Jesus came to show people God’s love.”

The return of the nativity display in the city centre was welcomed by most people in Ilford, as shown by a poll carried out by local newspaper Ilford Recorder.

Mr Chowdhry said: “As an Ilford Recorder poll suggested last year that the majority of local people desire a nativity, use of the entrance should be given a priority.

“The loss of our nativity which had cost us £800 is a devastating blow but we will put every effort into bringing one back for 2019 despite this setback.”

The BPCA head explained the idea of bringing the nativity back to Ilford Town Centre sparked from his association, but was immediately backed by donors from a many religious groups, including Christians, Hindus and Muslims.

Mr Chowdhry added: “The symbol of the nativity is a pressing message to all of us, irrespective of our backgrounds to offer care and support to the most vulnerable in our communities.”

The destruction of the nativity has been complained about to the police twice, said Mr Chowdhry.

The BPCA head believes the police didn’t take appropriate action to find who carried out the destruction and failed to understand the concern it raised among the Christian community.

As a consequence, he demanded the police would treat this case as a hate crime.

He said: “At first I did not take any direct action myself as a crime had already been recorded and a call for evidence was placed in the Ilford Recorder.

“When I received a call from several local Christian leaders asking me to register the crime as a hate crime, I realised the extent of hurt the vandalism has caused.”

But police said the action is being treated as criminal damage and not as hate crime.

A police spokeswoman told Express.co.uk: “Police received a report of criminal damage after a number of figures from a nativity scene were damaged in High Road, Ilford.

“The damage occurred around December 21 and 22.

“No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.”

Leader of Redbridge Council Cllr Jas Athwal said to the Ilford Recorder Newspaper that the incident was “sad” and he will not let “mindless people ruin the nativity”.

He said: “If we have to have it protected in the future then we will do it.

“One thing I love about Redbridge is the diversity and living together and this year I had the privilege of going Eid celebrations, Chanukah, Vaisakhi and last week I went to a church for Christmas.

“We want to be making sure that all religions are living here peacefully.”

A Redbridge council spokesperson said to the Wanstead and Woodford Guardian: “We were very disappointed to hear about this act of vandalism which we deplore.

“We take matters like this seriously and do not tolerate vandalism of any kind in Redbridge.

“The council will continue to work closely with the police during their investigation and we urge anyone with information to contact them on non-emergency number 101.””

      • Tearing down Afghanistan’s Bhuddas was also “vandalism.

Mullah Omar—as the spiritual leader who sequestered bin Laden during his staging of the 9-11 Atrocity—is on record as saying (about demolishing the Bamiyan Buddhas), “We are only breaking stones.”

His meaning being that, as idolatrous or graven images, they were just artifacts of jahiliyyah (i.e., the pre-Islamic “Age of Ignorance”) at best, if not a putatively intentional infidel affront to Allah, as is far more often the case—even when such shrines predated the birth of Mohammad.

This age of darkness ALWAYS precedes Islams arrival, even if the previous culture built towering pyramids. In fact, Sultan Al-Aziz Uthman unsuccessfully tried to tear down the 5.9 MILLION TON Giza pyramid and had to settle for Muslim pillagers stripping off the polished, white limestone outer casing that, according to legend, was inscribed with over 100,000 characters or hieroglyphs (probably the monument’s operating instructions, for it most certainly was not a tomb).

This priceless and irreplaceable artifact (which made the Great Pyramid flash like a sunlit desert beacon—one potentially visible from outer space) was stripped away and carted off to build Cairo’s mosques. C’est tres Islamique!

Please keep in mind that jahiliyyah is the blanket excuse used by Muslims everywhere and throughout Islam’s history to have an abrupt Radical Relapse™ (i.e. Sudden Jihad Syndrome). Such a marked deterioration in civility frequently manifests as synagogue shootings or bombings, Coptic genocide, appropriation of cultural monuments (e.g., the Hagia Sophia), and other atrocities too numerous for this limited space to document.

So, when Mullah Omar says, “We are only breaking stones.”, perhaps its time to consider breaking that Big that Muslims think is so adorable. After all, we would only be “breaking stones”. Islam’s stones, to be precise.

EPILOGUE: Strange as may seem, monster raving loons like Omar actually might rejoice over destruction of Mecca’s Grand Mosque. The piety of many Taliban is so hardcore that the kaaba, like the Bamiyan Buddhas, is regarded by these ultra-purists as being idolatrous as well. How pure, might you ask? Well, please recall that bin Laden viewed iced beverages as a decadent Western luxury.

Either way, it still could be prudent to tell Islam that one more Bamiyan-like incident and The Grand Mosque might not be quite so grand anymore. Another option is simply to take the entire kaaba complex by force. After that, set up a minefield around its perimeter with automatic weapons providing a sensor-directed enfilade.

Then spend the next few years or decades telling Islam to take the haj and stuff it into some unlit intimate crevice. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  9. Furious Nick Ferrari HANGS UP on expert who claims UK ‘forces’ migrants to cross Channel (express, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1066577/Migrants-English-Channel-Sajid-Javid-crossing-news-immigration-European-Union

“RADIO host Nick Ferrari cut off an expert who claimed the UK “effectively force people into very dangerous journeys” across the English Channel.

The total number of migrants that have arrived in the UK since November stands at 239. Chai Patel from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants claimed the UK “effectively forces” people into making dangerous journeys. The remark sparked a furious debate with Nick Ferrari before the LBC presenter lost his temper and hung up on the guest.

Mr Patel said: “Under the 1951 convention which we signed up to, if a person enters the country, and bare in mind talks about legal process by which you can do that, there isn’t really a legal process by which you can do that because we don’t give people a legal process, or a queue or a way of doing it.

“What we do is we effectively force people into very dangerous journeys.”

The host interrupted Mr Patel, demanding to know how the UK forced people into “perilous journeys”.

Mr Patel replied: “There are some people who are genuine asylum seekers who for various reasons, and we are talking about very very few people here, who are absolutely desperate to get to the UK.

“Often because they have got family members here…often they have already tried to claim asylum in other countries like France, that those countries have effectively a non-functioning asylum system.

“Alp [Mehmet] suggested there was a legal way to claim asylum in the UK.

“Frankly, if you’re stuck in France, there isn’t any practical legal way by which you can lodge an asylum claim. They are forced into a journey across the Channel.”

The LBC host interrupted Mr Patel once again. He said: “The whole objective of the Dublin regulation is to ensure that asylum is dealt with where the person first enters the EU.”

He added: “Why don’t you afford the Treaty of Dublin any respect?”

The pair rowed over the conventions of the Treaty before Ferrari hung up on his guest.

He said: “I’ve just read it, so I think we’ll leave it there.”

The Royal Navy and RAF have been called in by the Home Secretary to handle people crossing the English Channel.

Sajid Javid described crossings over the Christmas period as a “major incident” last Friday.

On Wednesday Mr Javid urged migrants not to make the trip. He said: “You are coming from France, which is a safe country.

“In almost every case you are claiming asylum in the UK but if you were a real, genuine asylum seeker you could have done that in another safe country.”

However, Mr Javid’s words were condemned by Labour’s shadow home secretary, Diane Abbott.

She said: “It is not for Sajid Javid to claim that asylum seekers may not be genuine. He cannot know. We have a system for determining that.””

  10. Tunisia holiday warning: Terrorists strike as nation struggles to contain militants (express, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1066708/tunisia-holiday-is-it-safe-to-go-to-tunisia-terror-isis-terrorist-foreign-office

“TUNISIA has been shaken by a fresh episode of violence by the hands of terrorists, when two jihadists blew themselves up in the city of Jilma, renewing concerns among holidaymakers about the safety of the country.

The two terrorists were exchanging fire with security forces who stormed their hideout and encircled them when they detonated their bombs this morning, the interior ministry said. The vile act took place 156 miles south of the country’s capital, Tunis. One of the casualties has been identified as Ezzedine Alaoui, leader of the Brigade of Jihad and Unity, a splinter group of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Soufien Sliti, a spokesman for the counter-terrorism agency said.

Alaoui was also the mastermind of a terrorist plot aiming to take control of the province of Sidi Bouzid, 129 miles south of Tunis.

Tunisia has been struggling against militant groups operating near the border of Algeria since 2011, when citizens raised against autocratic leader Zine Abidine Ben Ali.

The uprising and the terror attacks which later plagued the country turned what once was one of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations in north Africa into an unsafe zone.

Counter-terrorism forces estimated about 3,000 Tunisians have joined ISIS and other jihadist groups in Iraq, Syria and Libya in the past nine years.

Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against any kind of journey in the southern part of Tunisia and asks holidaymakers to check constantly its travel advice before deciding to head to the country.

The FCO’s travel advice page on Tunisia reads: “A state of emergency is in effect in Tunisia, imposed after a suicide attack on a police bus on 24 November 2015.

“It’s been extended a number of times, most recently on November 5 2018 by one month.

“Since the terrorist attack in Sousse in June 2015, which targeted tourists, the UK government has been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider threat from terrorist groups.

“The Tunisian government has improved protective security in major cities and tourist resorts.

“But terrorists are still very likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia, including against UK and Western interests.

“Security forces remain on a high state of alert in Tunis and other places.

“You should be vigilant at all times, including around religious sites and festivals….”

  11. CNN BLUNDER: Host stunned as Republican Senator SWEARS in outburst – ‘bunch of B******T!’ (express, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1066670/CNN-News-Lindsey-Graham-Donald-Trump-ISIS-return-Iraq-Syria-US-troop-withdrawal

“CNN anchorwoman Dana Bash was left momentarily stunned after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham cursed on live television as he commented on the decision to pull US troops from Syria.

The CNN host was temporarily reduced to silence as the senior Republican politician furiously shut down suggestions US President Donald Trump could “bear responsibility” for the return of the Islamic State (ISIS). President Trump unexpectedly announced US troops will be completely withdrawn from Syria – a move American allies have warned will potentially help ISIS recruit new fighters globally. Senator Graham immediately shut down the CNN host, branding the suggestion “a complete, absolute lie”.

Ms Bash said: “If ISIS reconstitutes itself after the US leaves, does President Trump bear responsibility?”

Mr Graham appeared particularly vexed by the question, hitting back: “Number one, everything we are dealing with today falls on Obama’s watch. He’s the one one who withdrew from Iraq in 2011.

    “That’s a bunch of b******t, pardon my French. That’s a complete lie.

“A complete, absolute lie. I was there, talking to the Prime Minister of Iraq and he said ‘how many soldiers you’re talking about?’ Obama wanted to get to zero, he got to zero.”

He continued: “On October 21, 2011, I said ‘I hope the President is right and I’m wrong,’ but I feared this decision would come back to haunt us.

“ISIS came about as result of our withdrawal from Iraq. The caliphate was established in Syria as Obama sat on the sidelines and watched the place be dismembered.

“He was dealt a bad hand by Obama and he needs to play better than he’s playing it.”

American soldiers were first deployed to Syria in 2014 as part of a coalition with the United Kingdom, France, Jordan and Bahrain to lead the fight against the threat of ISIS. President Trump justified his decision claiming ISIS has been “completely defeated.”

A US official said Washington aimed to withdraw troops within 60 to 100 days and said the US State Department was evacuating all its personnel in Syria within 24 hours.

Complete withdrawal from Syria is expected to take 60 to 100 days but so far President Trump has not announced a clear deadline for the end of operations in the war-torn country…”

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6554045/Man-26-arrested-murder-New-Years-Eve-party-charged-firearms-offences.html

“Abu Hamza’s son is the suspect held in connection with the murder of a doorman outside a Mayfair party on New Year’s Eve, MailOnline can exclusively reveal today.

Imran Mostafa Kamel, 26, whose radical preacher father was extradited to the US in 2012, was arrested after Tudor Simionov was knifed in the chest when violence erupted in Mayfair at 5.30am on Wednesday.

Mr Simionov fought off up to nine men seconds before being stabbed to death outside 80 Park Lane – where a private £2,000-a-table gathering allegedly organised by Lord Edward Davenport was going on. ..”

    • Revealed: Hate preacher Abu Hamza’s son, 26, is man being quizzed over bouncer’s murder at Mayfair New Year party as he appears in court charged with firearms possession

The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, eh? Remember:

      TERRORISM RUNS IN THE FAMILY

Bloodlines run deep in Arab cultures (right down to how one clan’s cooking makes them all smell one particular way). It is the basis for unbelievably secure terrorist cells. Peculiar dialects and accents only represent an extra layer of encryption with unique references or idioms creating a near unbreakable code.

So, in the spirit of nurturing filial bonds, maybe Imran Mostafa Kamel can share a cell with his beloved double-amputee terrorist father. He could even be the honored one who gets to wipe padar hookboy’s @ss. If he really behaves himself and is super-duper fortunate, maybe one day they’ll give him a sponge on a stick to do it with.

Gloves? Ooooh, you gotta know that’s gonna cost him extra.

      • They’re so inbred, it’s easy for even the casual observor to sort the in-ies from the out-ies. Smell, for sure.

You can even distinguish clans among UK Pakis in video clips we watch here. The dentition, the whorl patterns of facial and body hair, hands.

Westerners promoting conspiracies on social media are oblivious to such subtleties. They’ll show a minute or two video, and say: “See, he’s really a Super-Saudi. Wiping out Hezbollah in the Golan.”

And it’s obviously a Alawite or Druze. Gulf Arabs are really into jihadi tourism, but they don’t blend in, are never trusted for very long.

  13. Yemen cholera epidemic strain ‘came from eastern Africa’ (BBC, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-46746394

“Scientists have found the most likely source of Yemen’s cholera epidemic, which is the worst in recorded history.

Using genomic sequencing, researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and Institut Pasteur concluded the strain of cholera originated in eastern Africa and was carried to Yemen by migrants.

They hope the data will help estimate the risk of future outbreaks and be used to better target interventions.

Since 2016 the epidemic has affected a million people and caused 2,770 deaths.

It has amplified the suffering of civilians caught up in a three-year civil war between forces loyal to the internationally-recognised President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the rebel Houthi movement.

As a result of the fighting and a partial blockade by the coalition, some 16 million Yemenis lack access to safe drinking water, sanitation and basic healthcare, and 10 million do not know where their next meal will come from…”

  14. Understanding Arabic is a blessing and a curse at the same time! ” Shoot these sons of bitches” – Impressions from Imad Karim on Berlin New Year’s Eve+++
A blessing because one immediately recognizes the dangers and could warn against them and a curse because nobody would believe his warning.

Here in this video, which according to the source was recorded on this New Year’s Eve 2018 in Berlin, I hear Arab young men speaking with Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese dialects.

    Here’s an extract:

    “Shoot them (the cops), shoot!”
“Go boys (comrades), shoot him there (at one policeman)”
“Shoot them (the cops), shoot them!”
    Then in German, “Hurensöhne”.
“Shoot them, those sons of bitches!”
Then in English, “son of a bitch.”
“Okay Samieh, let him go, he’s had enough, he’s had enough, let him go”

  15. Dozens killed as Al Qaeda-linked rebels try to consolidate control in northern Syria (independent, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syria-rebels-al-qaeda-idlib-russia-turkey-hayat-tahrir-al-sham-a8709511.html

“Extremist groups are trying to consolidate their control in northern Syria, attacking rival opposition fighters and putting a fragile ceasefire at risk in the process.

Dozens have been killed over the last three days in fighting between Al Qaeda-linked rebels and a coalition of groups backed by Turkey.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which was once a part of Al Qaeda and still espouses the same ideology, has captured several villages in Idlib and western Aleppo. More than 40 fighters and six civilians have been killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The area in question is the last remaining holdout of opposition rebels in the country. In September last year, a long-threatened Syrian government offensive to recapture Idlib from rebels was averted after a deal was struck between Turkey and Russia.

As part of that agreement, Turkey asked for more time to be able to deal with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which Damascus cited as its primary justification for the offensive.

Turkey has backed a coalition of rebel groups called the National Liberation Front as a counter to the extremist group, to little avail. Following the breakout of clashes earlier this week, the NLF called for a “general mobilisation” against the Al Qaeda-linked fighters.

“Following the latest series of attacks by HTS, indicating how willing it is to shed the blood of revolutionaries, its disregard for Sharia rulings and its gambling with the higher interests of the blessed Syrian revolution, the National Liberation Front has announced the general mobilisation of all of its forces in all free territories to repel these attacks, deter the aggressors and recover all the areas they violated,” the group said in a statement on Wednesday.

The move by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham came amid speculation that Turkey had reached an agreement with Russia to take action against it following the impending withdrawal of US forces from Syria.

“To make it more difficult for Turkey, HTS sensed an opportunity to make a power play to control one of the few critical areas in Greater Idlib that it does not have control or strong influence over,” Nicholas Heras, a fellow at the Center for a New American Security, told The Independent.

“HTS is trying to demonstrate to Turkey that it will not be beaten by any of the Turkish proxies in Greater Idlib and that Turkey has no quick and easy way to remove it,” he added.

The renewed fighting in Idlib comes as winter is creating extremely difficult conditions for the roughly three million displaced people living in the province. Flash flooding has forced more than 12,000 people to abandon refugee camps along the border, where tents have been washed away…”

  16. Two Afghan radio stations attacked in the space of a few days (RSF, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://rsf.org/en/news/two-afghan-radio-stations-attacked-space-few-days

“Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns the armed attacks on two radio stations in Afghanistan that were carried out at the end of last month, one in the western province of Herat on 26 December and one in the eastern province of Nuristan on 23 December.

In the latest attack, an RPG-2 anti-tank grenade was fired at Nedai Sobh, a radio station based in Ghoryan, in Herat province, on the evening of 26 December. Although fired at close range, it caused no injuries and little damage.

The station’s director, Javid Azizi, told RSF that he received a call at 10 a.m. the next morning from an individual identifying himself as a Taliban representative who “claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to kill all the personnel if our programmes continued.”

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied that the Taliban were responsible but police spokesman Abdelahad Valizadeh confirmed that the attack did take place and said it was being investigated. Azizi said he thought the Taliban were responsible because “they had already threatened our staff on several occasions for broadcasting music and women’s voices.”

Based in Norgaram, in Nuristan province, Radio Elina was attacked on the evening of 23 December by armed men who, according to station director Bashir Ahmad Ahamadi, “destroyed part of the equipment, including the transmitter, abducted one of the station’s journalists and took two computers.” They released the journalist a few hours later.

The police began an investigation that included visiting the radio station and arresting several suspects but thereafter made little progress. Launched in 2010, the station had not received any threats prior to the attack.

“This increase in violence against the media is unacceptable amid the ongoing peace efforts,” said Réza Moini, the head of RSF’s Iran-Afghanistan desk. “We urge the Afghan government to investigate these attacks thoroughly in order to identify the perpetrators and instigators as quickly as possible. Impunity encourages the media’s enemies. It is vital that protecting journalists becomes a priority for everyone.”

Afghanistan is ranked 118th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2018 World Press Freedom Index.”

  17. US airstrike in Somalia kills 10 al-Shabab militants (sptripes, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.stripes.com/news/africa/us-airstrike-in-somalia-kills-10-al-shabab-militants-1.562984

“The U.S. military says it has carried out an airstrike in southwestern Somalia that killed 10 members of the al-Shabab extremist group.

The U.S. Africa Command statement says the airstrike occurred Wednesday near Dheerow Sanle to “diminish al-Shabab’s freedom of movement and to increase pressure on the terrorist network.”

The statement says no civilians were injured or killed.

This is the first reported U.S. airstrike of the year in Somalia. The U.S. carried out at least 47 such strikes last year in the Horn of Africa nation.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab continues to control large parts of the country’s southern and central regions and carry out deadly bombings against high-profile targets in the capital, Mogadishu.

The U.S. has sharply increased the number of airstrikes since President Donald Trump took office.”

  18. Taliban video shows fighters controlling district center in Farah (longwarjournal, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2019/01/taliban-video-shows-fighters-controlling-district-center-in-farah.php

“On Dec. 12, the Taliban seized control of the district of Shib Koh in Afghanistan’s embattled western province of Farah after Afghan security forces fled. Afghan security officials denied Shib Koh fell to the Taliban, but a video recently released by the Taliban shows its fighters in full control of the district center.

The video, which was released at the end of Dec. at Voice of Jihad, the Taliban’s official propaganda website, shows Taliban fighters touring the abandoned district center. There does appear to be some signs of fighting, however it is unclear if the fighting was recent. Numerous Afghan police pickup trucks, which appear to have been damaged and salvaged for parts, are parked throughout the compound.

Towards the end of the video, a Taliban commander gives a lengthy speech to what appears to be a group of captive Afghan security personnel or local villagers.

Like in previous Taliban videos of this genre, the Taliban is touring the base and operating in broad daylight without fear of reprisal from Afghan or Resolute Support air power. The Taliban continues to be able to mass its forces and overrun district centers and military bases, and do so despite having a massive gap in military technology and hardware.”

  19. Swedish MSM Called Out for Not Identifying Child Abuser as Left-Wing Politician (breitbart, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/03/swedish-msm-called-out-for-not-identifying-child-abuser-as-left-wing-politician/

“Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Radio has been slammed by a Moderate Party MP for refusing to identify a Social Democrat politician who was convicted for having sex with an underage migrant at a youth accommodation.

Moderate Party firebrand MP Hanif Bali criticised the broadcaster on Twitter for failing to mention the party affiliation of a female municipal politician in Western Sweden who was recently convicted of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old male migrant.

Calling the article “unprecedented,” Mr Bali asked why the broadcaster had refused to state which party the 45-year-old had belonged to despite it being mentioned in the SVT article used as a source for their reporting.

According to the original SVT report, the Social Democrat politician was sentenced to six months in prison for having sex with the underage migrant boy on multiple occasions with the court stating that due to his young age it did not matter whether the sex acts had been consensual or not on his part.

The various sexual encounters began to take place in autumn of 2017 when the 45-year-old had been working in a home for young vulnerable people, called HVB homes in Sweden, with the boy claiming the woman had started the encounters by coming on to him.

The woman has since appealed the verdict and demanded a full acquittal and has claimed that the 16-year-old had initiated the sexual relationship. She has also renounced her municipal duties since the sexual incidents came to light.

Several cases of sexual relationships between older women volunteers and young migrant males have been documented since the start of the migrant crisis. In 2016, it was revealed that “sex tourism” was a problem in the former Calais Jungle migrant camp with open borders activists accused of exploiting young migrants for sex.

In Austria, the trend of older women sexually engaging with young migrant men was labelled the “sugar mama” phenomenon with some claiming rapid growth of the trend since 2015.”

  20. While Algeria Shuts Border to ‘Armed Groups Fleeing Syria’, EU Remains Open (breitbart, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2019/01/03/algeria-shuts-southern-border-armed-groups-fleeing-syria-europes-door-remains-open/

“Algeria is closing its southern border to Syrian migrants, citing security concerns, while Spain has saw a record year for migrant arrivals in 2018.

The North African country is concerned that about the potential risks posed by former Syrian rebels — many of whom are affiliated with or have fought alongside Islamist factions — to their security, having undergone a period of bruising internal strife with jihadist groups itself in the 1990s.

“We have hosted 50,000 Syrians in the past few years for humanitarian reasons, but we cannot accept members of armed groups fleeing from Syria when it comes to our security,” said Hassen Kacimi, an interior ministry official with responsibility for migration, in comments to Reuters.

The Algerian said the authorities had expelled around a hundred Syrians travelling north from Mali and Niger by way of countries such as Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and Sudan, using fake Sudanese passports.

“Definitely this is a criminal network and we must be very vigilant not to allow them [to get into] Algeria,” Kacimi warned.

The stance of Muslim-majority Algeria contrasts starkly with that of many Western governments, which is still keen to take in Syrians. Some are even making special arrangements for individuals claiming to be White Helmets volunteers to be brought in with their families, despite concerns about their true nature.

Illegal immigration to Europe has decreased as the EU’s expensive deal with the Turkish regime continues to stem the flow to Greece, and tough new measures against sea crossings introduced by Italy’s Matteo Salvini in the new anti-establishment coalition bear fruit — but controls remain lax in some quarters.

Spain, in particular, where the anti-borders Socialist Party has taken power without an election, has become something of an open door, with 57,250 illegal migrants having arrived in the country from the beginning of 2018 to December 26th, according to the UN Migration Agency/International Organization for Migration — an average of almost 160 per day.

A further 300 were landed in Spain on December 28th by the NGO migrant ferry Open Arms, which was invited to sail past a number of safe harbours in Africa to the port of Algericas after Italy and Malta refused to receive it.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/niger-days-raids-kill-280-boko-haram-extremists-60134730

“Niger’s defense ministry says several days of raids have killed more than 280 Boko Haram extremists near the border with Nigeria.

The statement says the land and air raids began on Dec. 28, with more than 200 extremists killed in airstrikes.

Nigeria in November held an urgent meeting with neighbors about what it called an extremist resurgence fueled by the new use of drones.

Niger’s statement says no troops were killed in the raids in its east. It notes that Nigeria “suffered a string of recent attacks on its military bases” and that the extremists had been reinvigorated.

Niger’s defense minister last month said he feared Boko Haram would launch renewed attacks from January, when the Komadougou-Yobe river which usually prevents border incursions begins to recede.”

Lewis Ludlow, who plead guilty of planning attacks on major tourist hotspots in London, was brought to the Central Criminal Court in the UK capital, on Thursday, ahead of his sentencing.

Reportedly, the 27-year old Ludlow admitted having planned a truck-ramming attack in London, as well as sending funds to the self-proclaimed Islamic State in the Philippines.

The court is due to sit for three days before announcing their sentence.

“Bavaria’s conservative governor is condemning an incident in which young asylum-seekers allegedly assaulted passers-by in a southern German town, but is also denouncing far-right attempts to exploit it.

Four apparently intoxicated Afghan and Iranian teenagers were arrested in Amberg on Saturday, suspected of assaulting people near the town’s train station. Twelve people were hurt, most slightly. Bavarian officials said it’s not legally possible to deport the suspects but authorities want to change that.

On Thursday, police said they were looking into far-right claims of a local militia group being set up but had no concrete evidence of that.

Bavarian governor Markus Soeder says “we condemn in the strongest terms the crimes committed in Amberg, but we also condemn the fact that certain far-right groups are trying to abuse this.””

According to German media, he was released but ordered to remain in Turkey.

Ties between Germany and Turkey were frayed by Turkey’s detention of several German citizens amid a clampdown following a failed 2016 coup attempt. They included two journalists, who have since been released.

      • Spurning Erdogan’s Vision, Turks Leave in Droves, Draining Money and Talent

ISTANBUL – For 17 years, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won elections by offering voters a vision of restoring the glories of Turkey’s Ottoman past. He extended his country’s influence with increased trade and military deployments, and he raised living standards with years of unbroken economic growth.

But after a failed 2016 coup, Mr. Erdogan embarked on a sweeping crackdown. Last year, the economy wobbled and the lira plunged soon after he won re-election with even greater powers. As cronyism and authoritarianism seep deeper into his administration, Turks are voting differently – this time with their feet.

They are leaving the country in droves and taking talent and capital with them in a way that indicates a broad and alarming loss of confidence in Mr. Erdogan’s vision, according to government statistics and analysts.

In the last two to three years, not only have students and academics fled the country, but also entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and thousands of wealthy individuals who are selling everything and moving their families and their money abroad.

More than a quarter of a million Turks emigrated in 2017, according to the Turkish Institute of Statistics, an increase of 42% over 2016, when nearly 178,000 citizens left the country.…

At least 12,000 of Turkey’s millionaires – around 12% of the country’s wealthy class – moved their assets out of the country in 2016 and 2017, according to the Global Wealth Migration Review, an annual report produced by AfrAsia Bank.

Most of them moved to Europe or the United Arab Emirates, the report said. Turkey’s largest business center, Istanbul, was listed among the top 7 cities worldwide experiencing an exodus of wealthy people.

“If one looks at any major country collapse in history, it is normally preceded by a migration of wealthy people away from that country,” the report said.…

  28. Angela Merkel’s Legacy and the Jews

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,055, January 3, 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Angela Merkel’s tenure as Chancellor of Germany is drawing to a close. While she has always shown great empathy for Germany’s Jews, her 2015 decision to open the country’s gates to migrants led to the influx of approximately a million and a half people (so far), mainly from Muslim countries, which has in turn strengthened Germany’s longstanding anti-Semitism. Helmut Kohl, who was CDU chancellor from 1982-98, enabled the strengthening of the German Jewish community through major immigration from Russia. Merkel’s legacy, by contrast, may well be a substantial diminishment of the German Jewish community through emigration.

As of a few weeks ago, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is no longer chair of the Christian Democrat Party (CDU), and she will not stand for the chancellorship – a position she has held since 2005 – after the next elections. As her tenure at Germany’s helm is drawing to a close, the media have started to analyze her performance and speculate about her legacy.

This is thus a good moment to begin to look at Merkel’s legacy with regard to Germany’s Jews. Previous CDU leader Helmut Kohl, who served as chancellor from 1982-98, enabled an estimated 170,000 Russian Jews to immigrate to Germany. As a result of that policy, Germany once again has a significant Jewish community. The country’s organized Jewish community currently has close to 100,000 members (which is, however, barely more than 0.1% of Germany’s population).

  31. Europe’s New “Munich”: Iran

    by Giulio Meotti
    January 3, 2019 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/13380/europe-iran-appeasement

In the choice between greed and values, Europe is approaching an existential crossroads with Iran. Europe is both undermining its credibility and surrendering its principles.

For Western governments to defend the interests of businesses is normal. But to betray the Iranian people, who are repressed by their own regime; to undermine Israel’s concerns about Iran’s all too real threats of annihilation; to beg for an accord that fast-tracks Iran’s nuclear weapons capability, and to boycott efforts by the US administration to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions — these are not normal. They are lethal.

The Iranian leadership has long called for the destruction of Israel — the country, along with Saudi Arabia, most at risk from a nuclearized and aggressive Islamic Republic. In November, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, who has been hailed by the media as a “moderate”, called Israel a “cancerous tumor in the region.” A few months earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, tweeted similar remarks:

    • This isn’t Munich appeasement.
Before the Holocaust. After is another world.
      The analogy doesn’t work _After_.

There’s nothing well-intentioned in enabling Iran. Even “weakness and greed” fall shy of the mark.

They’re carrying Hitler’s torch, they’re fixated on the Nation State of the Jewish people. Doggedly determined to do their utmost to fix the world by eliminating “a certain people”.

Even if they destroy themselves in the process.

  32. US terrorists to be named on sex offender-style registries in bid to prevent attacks (express, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1066815/us-terrorists-sex-offender-type-registry-prisoners

“TERRORISTS released from US prisons could be put on sex-offender-style registries.

US authorities in some states want to introduce the registries to warn local residents the ex-prisoners had moved into their areas. Dozens of inmates convicted of terror-related offences are set to be released from jail over the next five years. Florida House of Representatives’ Republican Mike Hill is now introducing legislation to launch the new terrorist registry in his state.

Mr Hill said: “After the Pulse nightclub and the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, we know we can be susceptible to terrorist attacks.

“A proposal like this may draw a little opposition, but this should be something that unites us.”

The Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida saw a man linked to Islamic State murder 49 people in 2016.

In 2017, a gunman shot dead five people at Ford Lauderdale, although the perpetrator, Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, was not charged with any terror-related offences.

And in August, 2017 a far-right extremist ploughed a speeding car into a group of of protesters marching against a far-right demonstration in Charlottesville Virgina, killing a woman.

In October 2017, eight people were killed and almost a dozen injured when a 29-year-old man who allegedly supported ISIS mowed down pedestrians in a truck near the World Trade Center in New York.

Another high-profile offender convicted of terror-related offences includes John Walker Lindh, dubbed the ‘American Taliban’, after being captured while fighting in Afghanistan for the Islamist group.

He was jailed for 20 years after being returned to the USA in 2002.

Lawmakers in Louisiana and Missouri are also proposing bills in 2019 to establish terrorist registries modelled on sex-offender lists, according to Christopher Holton, vice president for outreach at the Center for Security Policy, a national-security think tank.

In 2016, the New York state Senate passed a terrorist registry but it did not pass the state Assembly.

Mr Holton said: “There is precedent. We are not breaking new ground.”

Under the plans, offenders convicted of terrorism-related crimes who fail to register with local law enforcement after release would be committing a felony.

Missouri state Rep. Mike Moon, a Republican, told Fox News: “It’s just as important – maybe more important with regard to a national impact – as a sex-offender registry.

“Americans were joining the fight abroad or attempting to provide aid and comfort to terrorist organisations.

“They were apprehended, tried and incarcerated. When they are released, at least some will have the mentality to destroy America.

“Every sheriff should know if they are in the area.””

  33. zero hedge – British Intelligence Infiltrates Voice of Europe Media Outlet

In a startling revelation, an editor for major populist online publication Voice of Europe is accused of working for British police intelligence as part of a program targeting political organizations in the UK and broader Europe. The alleged breach comes several weeks after Disobedient Media highlighted the danger of the UK becoming involved with the Gilets Jaunes protests for geopolitical gain.

Individuals at the center of the incident warn that it may have been part of a wider British program targeting anti-establishment organizations such as Wikileaks as well as right-wing movements and politicians throughout the US and Europe.

Disappearance Leads To Scrutiny Of Voice Of Europe’s Editor

The operation was first exposed on January 1, 2019 by independent researcher Nicholas Monroe, who had grown concerned over the disappearance of Peter Imanuelson, a Norwegian-born UK national living in North Yorkshire and blogging under the alias Peter Sweden. Imanuelson, who was known for his affiliation with identitarian and populist movements in Europe such as Defend Europe, had caused alarm by ceasing his usually constant Twitter activity for the month of December 2018. Monroe’s investigation revealed troubling indications that Imanuelson had become wrapped up in a British police intelligence operation that has been known to target right-wing and far-left political movements across Europe.

Imanuelson had become engaged in November to an editor and “second in command” of the right-wing populist news website Voice of Europe. The editor, known by the moniker of “Laura Cat,” claims to be a 25-year-old unmarried woman. However, “Laura Cat’s” own social media posts established that she is in fact a married mother whose brother in law is an employee of the UK Metropolitan police.

In 2009, the Guardian revealed that a British police officer had traveled to 22 different countries on a fake passport including Ireland, Iceland and Spain. Targeted movements included green, “anti-racist” and anarchist groups. Kennedy was a member of the National Public Order Intelligence Unit, a secretive organization run by a private limited company which allows it to remain exempt from freedom of information laws and other public accountability checks and balances. A database published by the Guardian on October 15th, 2018 revealed that British police had infiltrated 124 movements since the 1970’s and would even engage in sexual relationships with targets. According to a statement from Imanuelson, “Laura Cat” also works with an unnamed anti-trafficking charity that collaborates with MI5 and the US Department of Justice.

Peter Imanuelson’s father Emanuel revealed that since Peter had begun speaking to “Laura Cat,” their family had been systematically targeted by hacking and phone tapping attempts. When Imanuelson confronted the woman about his concerns that she was a part of a government program to target his son, he was blocked on social media both by her personal account as well as by the Voice of Europe.

Operation May Affect Britain’s UKIP, Targeting Populist Leadership In Europe, US

Further statements from Emanuel Imanuelson indicate that “Laura Cat” was allegedly part of a program targeting political organizations and figures in both the US and Europe. According to Imanuelson’s father, targets include Wikileaks, the Voice of Europe’s owners, Polish politician Dominik Tarczynski, unnamed Republican politicians, a “person close to Donald Trump,” Tommy Robinson and UKIP politician Janice Atkinson. “Laura Cat” had also purportedly hoped to use her connections with Voice of Europe to develop ties to high profile figures such as Geert Wilders, Marie Le Pen, Matteo Salvini and Viktor Orban. The Voice of Europe editor has also done design work for independent journalists such as Laura Loomer.

If the testimony of Imanuelson’s family and research by Nick Monroe is confirmed, it will represent a major breach of security for anti-establishment movements in the US and Europe. In November 2018, a report from Mintpress News revealed that American white supremacists had received training from the Ukrainian Neo Nazi group the Azov Battalion, who are assisted by the Ukrainian, US and Israeli governments. Far-right groups in Ukraine such as Right Sector are also working with Islamic militants who have received training from ISIS in Syria.

Infiltration of extremist groups on the left and right is a known tactic of security forces, but the UK’s program appears to be seeking to broadly target more mainstream populist movements and public figures. It raises serious questions about the possibility that similar operations may exist in the US and Canada as well. Much like CIA infiltration of left wing protest groups during the Cold War, the British approach allows them to use their assets to control narratives fed to supporters, hamper the effectiveness of populist movements and direct policy in a way that will benefit them politically.

  34. Germany: Proposals for faster deportations to be presented in January – Seehofer

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said that a constitutional amendment to make deportations ‘more effective’ will be presented to the experts of the Grand coalition in January, while speaking to reporters in Seeon-Seebruck on Thursday.

“I’ve been asked for months already to make the deportations more effective in Germany. Such requests have come from different sides, including the CSU regional group. That’s why we’ve been working for weeks at the Ministry of the Interior to prepare a constitutional amendment for a more efficient deportation system,” Seehofer explained.

The minister also added that the officials are now analysing the incident in Amberg, which happened last weekend, where several Afghan and Iranian asylum seekers allegedly attacked a string of pedestrians in the city.

“I’ve said that violent offenses are increasingly worrying me – whether they are made out of xenophobia or whether they are carried out by foreigners and asylum seekers. A state governed by the rule of low must decisively combat both of these types and punish for them,” he said.

  35. No such thing as European Islam – Turkey’s top Muslim official (ahvalnews, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://ahvalnews.com/german-turks/no-such-thing-european-islam-turkeys-top-muslim-official

“Turkey’s main Islamic body in Germany hosted a meeting in Cologne this week to shape the continuing debate about the future of Muslims in Europe, Turkish pro-government news outlets Diaspora Daily and Yeni ?afak reported.

“There is no such thing as German, French or European Islam,” Ali Erba?, the head of Turkey’s state religious authority, the Diyanet, said on Wednesday. “Islam is a religion of peace that defends and tries to keep the same universal values alive all over the world.”

The Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs, or DITIB, organised the two-day event. Germany’s largest Muslim body, DITIB runs more than 900 mosques. The former Diyanet branch is still largely run by Ankara, though it insists it is independent. DITIB is based in the Cologne Central Mosque, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an inaugurated during a visit to Germany in September.

Last week the German tabloid Bild ran an image of the mosque with a story on how terrorist money funded Germany’s mosques. Critics said the report could spur anti-Muslim attacks.

“Both printed and visual media have been advocating Islamophobia under the pretext of criticism,” Erba? said in Cologne, while also urging the European Muslim community to eliminate internal rifts.

The Cologne gathering appeared to be DITIB’s response to the German government’s Islam Conference held in Berlin in November. Pork dishes were served and secular-minded Muslims were allowed to speak, as Germany pressed DITIB to cut ties with Turkey as part of a broader effort to end foreign funding for religious groups in Germany. Last week, the German government said it was considering a mosque tax for the country’s Muslims, similar to the church tax paid by its Christians.

“Turkish Muslim institutions should be independent,” Fared Hafez, a political science professor from Georgetown University, said at the Cologne gathering. “They should not be acting like Turkish embassies. But that does not mean they should cut ties with Turkey. They have the right to maintain ties with homeland as Catholic community for example maintains ties with Vatican.””

  36. WELCOME TO HELL New Year’s riots and looting make Belgium’s notorious ‘jihadi capital’ Molenbeek a no go zone for cops and firefighters (thesun, Jan 2, 2019)
    https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/8105580/molenbeek-riots-brussels-new-years-jihadi-capital/

“NEW Year’s riots and looting made Belgium’s notorious “jihadi capital” Molenbeek a no-go zone for cops and firefighters, a fire chief has said.

The Brussels neighbourhood has previously been dubbed a “breeding ground for violence” after three of the extremists who carried out the November 2015 attacks in Paris were revealed to be from the district.

As revellers saw in 2019, cops were also forced to close down the metro station Etangs Noirs after disturbances broke out on the streets outside the entrance.
In total 37 people were arrested by the police.

But according to union representative and firefighter Eric Labourdette, his colleagues were unable to extinguish some fires in Molenbeek as they could not get any cops to guide them in to the dangerous borough and to then protect them against attackers.

Labourdette said: “The Brussels firefighters and those from other cities are sick and tired of being attacked while doing their duty.”

He complained that the police are understaffed and not able to keep the streets safe, with de-facto control of some boroughs in the hands of rioters.

Labourdette said: “Like each year, this New Year’s Eve was quite heavy for the firefighters of our capital. After the clock struck 12, the fire brigade was called for burning rubbish bins in the Etangs Noirs borough.

“At the spot in Rue Piers we saw a number of youths. There was quite a lot of smoke by fireworks on the streets, even though that is forbidden.

“Multiple rubbish bins and also a Christmas tree were on fire. There was a huge number of youths on the street, but the police were nowhere to be seen.”

According to Labourdette, the firefighters had to call off their mission “because their safety could not be guaranteed”.

On their way back, their fire truck was reportedly attacked with projectiles and stones thrown by the youths.

Labourdette said: “At all sorts of events they [firefighters] get stones thrown towards their heads.

“A football match which ends thousands of kilometres away: the fire brigade is attacked with stones. A rapper who calls for a gathering in the centre of Brussels: the fire brigade is attacked with stones. New Year’s Eve: the fire brigade is attacked with stones.

“It has almost become a game and unfortunately a daily occurrence for the fire brigade in the capital of Europe.”

Computer shop owner Hassan Zenague said looters managed to take computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices.

“I arrived at 1.30am and everything was completely smashed just 30 minutes later,” he said. “The police were present but did not intervene.”

Labourdette blamed the local politicians for turning Molenbeek into a no-go area, adding: “Let’s get rid of the political correctness which certain authorities impose on us. It is about time to realise that all sorts of control have become impossible in some boroughs.”

Sint-Jans-Molenbeek or Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, often simply called Molenbeek, is a western district of Brussels.

Molenbeek is most famous for harbouring Paris terror attack suspect Salah Abdeslam, who was jailed last year after being found guilty of attempted murder and possession of weapons following a shootout with police..

He is also accused of involvement in the deadly Paris terrorist attacks on the Bataclan theatre on November 13, 2015, and has been linked to an Isis attack in Brussels on March 22, 2016, when a total of 32 people were killed in coordinated suicide attacks. No formal charges have been made against him.”

“Two militants blew themselves up on Thursday following an exchange of fire with Tunisian security forces in the city of Jilma, 250 km south of the capital Tunis, the interior ministry stated, Reuters reported.

The statement added that the militants killed themselves after being encircled by security forces who stormed their hideout in the city.

Authorities estimate about 3,000 Tunisians have joined ISIS and other terrorist groups in Iraq, Syria and neighboring Libya, according to Reuters.

Tunisia saw 3 terror attacks in 2015.

Since 2011, the North African country has been combating militants operating in remote areas near the border with Algeria.”

  40. US Warns Iran Against Space Launches, Ballistic Missiles (aawsat, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://aawsat.com/english/home/article/1531016/us-warns-iran-against-space-launches-ballistic-missiles

“The United States warned Iran against pursuing planned space launches and asked it to cease all ballistic missile activity, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday.

“The United States will not stand by and watch the Iranian regimes destructive policies place international stability and security at risk,” Pompeo said in a statement.

“We advise the regime to reconsider these provocative launches and cease all activities related to ballistic missiles in order to avoid deeper economic and diplomatic isolation.”

The Iranian regime has launched ballistic missiles numerous times since UNSCR 2231 was adopted and continues to do so, Pompeo alleged.

He said the regime test-fired on the first of December a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads, and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force later said Iran tests 40 to 50 ballistic missiles every year.”

    • The missile program is impressive. It’s tightly integrated to their foreign legion of proxy militias. A different model of force structure.

Iran’s Missiles as an Expression of its Global Ambitions
      Excerpt:
The indirect overtaking of the Middle East is proceeding apace and gaining successes in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Baghdad, Damascus, Beirut and Sanaa are practically satrapies of the rising Iranian empire. To complete the take-over, Iran needs to subdue Saudi Arabia and neutralize Israel.

Iran is not building up huge armies to conquer Mecca, Medina or Jerusalem. Rather, it establishes “foreign legions” of local militias, of which the Lebanese Hezbollah is the outstanding example. The missiles Iran provides to its foreign legions are their strategic strike forces with which they now threaten Saudi Arabia from Yemen and Israel from Lebanon.

These satellite missile forces are backed up and buttressed by Iran’s own missiles which today can hit any target in the Middle East from within Iran’s sovereign territory.…

    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/saudi-columnist-forced-leave-saudi-arabia-qahtanis-hench-men-1908612987

“In a compelling Twitter thread, Reem Sulaiman describes how she fell foul of MBS aide and Khashoggi murder architect Qahtani

A prominent Saudi columnist has written an impassioned account of how she was forced to flee her country after being threatened with arbitrary detention and “psychological torture” by individuals connected to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Reem Sulaiman, who has written opinion pieces for the Mecca, Al-Wiam, and Anha newspapers, said an assistant to Saud al-Qahtani, one of the crown prince’s top aides, told her to stop writing or face imprisonment and torture.

The order echoes the demand issued by Qahtani to Jamal Khashoggi before the journalist and Middle East Eye contributor was assassinated in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul three months ago.

In a series of posts to her 39,000 Twitter followers, Sulaiman said Saudi authorities questioned her about her articles, tweets and links to Saudi female activists, intellectuals and journalists.

She also alleged that Qahtani had attempted to get a false confession from her mother while Sulaiman was imprisoned.

Sulaiman, who has since sought asylum in the Netherlands, was detained for two full days and interrogated by Saudi officials…”

  43. Over 100 refugees stranded or unaccounted for after transfer to Algeria border: UNHCR (mee, Jan 3, 2019)
    https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/un-refugee-agency-120-refugees-algerian-border-893581441

“The United Nation’s refugee agency has expressed concern about the status of 120 asylum seekers that it says are either stranded on Algeria’s border with Niger or are unaccounted for, after they were rounded up by Algerian authorities in late December.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement on Thursday that around 120 refugees hailing from Syria, Palestine and Yemen were detained in southern Algeria and sent to the Guezzam border post on 26 December.

Around 20 people remain stranded on the border, UNHCR said, citing information it has obtained about the individuals’ whereabouts, while the other 100 are unaccounted for.

“Given the urgent humanitarian imperative in providing assistance to those stranded, UNHCR is appealing to the Algerian authorities for access to those individuals, to address humanitarian needs and to identify those in need of international protection and to ensure their safety,” the agency said.

UNHCR did not provide a specific breakdown of the number of refugees from each country, nor did it say whether they will be extradited to Niger or another country. But it did say some are either registered refugees or claim to have applied for asylum in Algeria.

The agency, without specifying the conditions the refugees have had to endure, said they are “exposed to the elements”.

Algeria’s border region with Niger is a harsh, arid and empty desert that gets little rainfall.

UNHCR did not respond to MEE’s requests for comment prior to publication.

Algeria has not yet commented on the status of the refugees, but UNHCR said it is in regular contact with the authorities.

UNHCR’s figure for the number of refugees stranded on the border is higher than what has been previously reported.

On Wednesday, rights group Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH) said 50 refugees were stranded on the border.

Algeria currently hosts roughly 50,000 Syrian refugees who have the fled the country’s civil war.

On Wednesday, an Algerian official that works in the migration office within the interior ministry told AFP news agency that the country had shut down its southern border to incoming Syrian refugees out of fear they could have connections to militant groups.”
