“Genuine hate crimes are abhorrent and have no place in a civilised society.
But are hate crimes generally worse than burglary, arson, assault and rape?
Are the psychological injuries suffered by the victims of hate crime worse than the psychological and sometimes physical scars carried by those who have been physically or sexually assaulted, or had their homes ransacked and precious belongings stolen?
Certainly, where hate is an aggravating factor in serious crime it must be taken into account.
But how much investigative effort should our overstretched police forces be expected to invest in dealing with minor verbal or written abuse that someone perceives to be a hate crime?

It is a debate that must be had, which is why I welcome the intervention by Sara Thornton, head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council.
As the Mail reports today, Ms Thornton is calling for a ‘refocus on core policing’, for officers to be allowed to prioritise ‘today’s crime’ such as burglary and violence rather than hate crimes such as ‘misogyny’, and historical sex abuse.
It’s about time we heard a police chief speaking common sense because it has been a sorry few weeks for the reputation of the Thin Blue Line.
First, an influential committee of MPs warned that the failure of many forces to cope with everyday offences and to curb violent crime means that policing is at risk of becoming ‘irrelevant’ to many people.
If that wasn’t damning enough, a frontline officer then claimed victims of theft could soon be asked to carry out their own investigations.
At the same time forces are reported to be ‘ignoring’ crimes such as cannabis possession and fuel theft, while the number of targeted ‘stop and searches’ in London — where knife crime is soaring and there have been more than 100 murders this year — has fallen.
This national crisis in policing seems to have passed ministers by. How else can one explain the launch yesterday of a £1.5 million publicity campaign focusing on hate crime to ‘reassure those vulnerable’ to it that it is taken seriously?
Meanwhile, my old force, the Met, loudly boasts that it has ‘over 900 specialist hate crime investigators working across London’s dedicated hate crime Community Safety Units’. How much safer that community would be if those 900 officers were returned to the beat.
I’ll say it again. Genuine racial and religious abuse must be clamped down on; likewise abuse on account of someone’s sexuality or gender identity.
But the police are now having to contend with the ludicrous situation by which large numbers of individuals who’ve experienced what can only be classed as perceived slights —wolf whistles, rude jokes, swearing — report their grievances to the police and, because it is policy, officers are compelled to follow them up.
In contrast, when it comes to burglary and assault, police can ‘screen out’ incidences where the chances of identifying the perpetrator or securing a conviction are slim.
Police logged a record 94,098 hate crime offences in 2017, up 17 per cent in a year. At the same time, the Office of National Statistics last month reported overall violence rose by 19 per cent in the year to June 2018, while the murder rate increased by 14 per cent and robberies by 22 per cent.
Surely, it is the restoration of law and order to counteract these truly depressing figures for violence, murder and robbery that must be the Government’s top priority.
Ultimately, this means more resources for the police. Cuts imposed on forces since 2010 have undermined the state’s capacity to tackle criminality, with a 20,000 fall in the number of officers…”

A “hate crime” by definition should ONLY apply to violence and even when speech is taken into account it seems that muslims are still untouchable but whites are not so. Oct. 29,2018 Patch: Bronx Pair Arrested On Drug, Weapon Charges
Samer A. Al-Ruhimi, 32, and Mousa A. Naji, 31, both from the Bronx, were charged with third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, felonies, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.
Al-Ruhaimi was also charged with vehicle and traffic violations.
Police said Al-Ruhaimi, who was driving, was stopped on the thruway.
During an interview, it was established that there was probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.
Troopers said about 619.4 grams of Khat and a set of brass knuckles were located.
How are the two in the bottom story related to the sisters? Or is it just co-incidental?
The suggestion that these two stories “might” be connected was based on the sequence upon which I read each story.
I recall reading the online report of the girls found bound together on the banks of the Hudson River as it was posted in an online local paper two days ago with pencil sketches of the two females.
As I scrolled through other reports on another local on-line paper, I noticed the term “khat” and recalled reading about the use of this substance by cultural enrichers. (see here & here )
Yesterday, I read a comment w/ tweet via TheConservativeTreehouse by Todd Bensman suggesting the two girls were of Saudi origin.
When I attempted to locate each of the stories I read earlier – I could not find them on either source which I check daily. Unfortunately, I have a habit of clearing my memory after each shutdown – so that avenue of resurrecting each story’s link from my browsing history was impossible.
This morning, out of frustration – knowing I read it earlier – I persisted in searching for that report on the recent “khat” related arrest and found it on another online site (as seen above).
Ultimately, I thought it worth mentioning because of the ME identities, the timing with the discovery of the two girls and because the original source of the stories appear to have been pulled since a direct search at each site came up empty and a google search of each site’s online history for those stories was also fruitless.

Mystery surrounds deaths of Saudi sisters found in New York
Police in New York are investigating the deaths of two sisters from Saudi Arabia who were found duct-taped together in the Hudson River last week.
Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, were discovered facing each other and fully clothed without any obvious signs of trauma, police say.
Investigators say it is too early to determine if any crime occurred or if their deaths were caused by suicide.
The girls had recently applied for US asylum, police said.
The Farea sisters moved from Saudi Arabia to Fairfax, Virginia, in 2015 with their mother, and had a history of running away from home, according to US officials.
But investigators say it remains a “puzzle” as to how they came to be found dead on a riverbank more than 250 miles (400km) from their family’s home.
The Saudi Consulate General said in a statement that embassy officials had contacted their family, and added that the sisters were students “accompanying their brother in Washington”.
The Associated Press, citing New York police, said that the day before their bodies were discovered, their mother received a call from an official at the Saudi embassy ordering the family to leave because the girls had applied for political asylum.
The girls were discovered in Riverside Park last Wednesday wearing black leggings and black jackets and with duct-tape around their waists and ankles.
Police had originally theorised that the girls may have jumped from the George Washington Bridge, but ruled that out after finding a lack of obvious injuries which they would have sustained in the fall.
After releasing sketch drawings of the sisters, police were able to identify them on Friday, and are now seeking the public’s help in learning more about their lives in the New York metro area in the past two months.
At a press conference on Wednesday, the city’s chief of detectives said there are some “gaps” in the sisters’ history, which investigators are trying to resolve.
“I’m confident that when the complete investigation is done we’ll have a good idea of what exactly transpired,” said Detective Dermot Shea.

Tala and Rotana moved to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia with their mother in 2015, settling in Fairfax, a suburb of Washington D.C., police said.
Rotana was enrolled at George Mason University, but left in the spring. A George Mason spokesman called the news of her death “tragic,” and said the university was cooperating with police.
Police said the sisters left their family home and were placed in a shelter after an earlier disappearance, in December 2017.
They were reported missing again Aug. 24.
Police initially struggled to identify the bodies as much of the city and the country was transfixed by another mystery: the package bombs sent to a dozen prominent Democrats and CNN’s New York City bureau.

Iranian Journalist Could Face Death Penalty For Allegedly “Insulting” Shia Prophet
Iranian journalist Pouyan Khoshhal has been arrested in Tehran and charged with a crime that could carry the death penalty for using the word “demise” instead of “martyrdom” while referring to a revered figure of Shia Islam.
He was also fired from the reformist Ebtekar newspaper, which issued an apology instead of defending the journalist.
Khoshhal was taken into custody on October 25, 2018, while waiting to board an international flight at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport and charged with “insulting the divinity of Imam Hossein and other members of the prophet’s blessed household,” the Iranian judiciary’s official news agency Mizan reported.
According to Iran’s Islamic Penal Code, those convicted of insulting Imam Hossein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, could be issued the death penalty.
Article 262 states, “Anyone who swears at or commits qazf against the Great Prophet [of Islam] (peace be upon him) or any of the Great Prophets, shall be considered as S?b ul-nabi [a person who swears at the prophet], and shall be sentenced to the death penalty.”
On October 21, Ebtekar had published a report by Khoshhal, “Disease Awaits Careless Pilgrims,” about the medical issues faced by the millions of Iranians who take a pilgrimage to Iman Hossein’s shrine in Karbala, Iraq annually. Last year, 2,320,000 Iranians made the trip, according to state media reports.
“Every year, pilgrims travel to the city of Karbala to mark the 40th day of the anniversary of Imam Hossein’s demise,” wrote Khoshhal.
The next day, the word “demise” was changed to “martyrdom” and Ebtekar’s Chief Editor Reza Dehaki issued an apology. Khoshhal was also fired from his job.
“In our report, instead of the word ‘martyrdom,’ another word was used by mistake and for this we apologize to Imam Zaman, Imam Hossein and all Shi’ites,” Dehaki wrote.
Hardline officials responded to the apology by demanding Khoshhal’s arrest.
Without mentioning Khoshhal’s name, Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi announced on October 24 that an arrest warrant had been issued for the journalist “who published numerous articles that insulted Imam Hossein.”
Khoshhal was also attacked by social media users who called for his execution.
“According to the fatwas of all Shia religious leaders, [Khoshhal] is guilty and should be executed as soon as possible,” tweeted user “Ammar,” who in his Twitter profile describes himself as a willing martyr for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
“Khomeini95,” who considers himself “a simple cleric,” also tweeted that Khoshhal should be “skewered” for being a “threat to society.”
On the other hand, some journalists in Iran defended Khoshhal while criticizing the newspaper for firing him.
“What Pouyan Khoshhal wrote could really have been an error. Ebtekar’s publisher and editors showed how dishonorable they are by firing Khoshhal and the twitter wave against him is absolutely disgraceful,” tweeted journalist Mahsa Jazini.
The conservative Kayhan newspaper, which claims to have a direct line to the supreme leader, meanwhile criticized the Ebtekar newspaper for allowing a reporter to use an allegedly inappropriate noun to describe Imam Hossein’s death.
“What’s worth noting is that Ebtekar’s publisher is Mohammad Ali Vakili, a member of Parliament’s leadership [committee], and unfortunately a member of the Press Supervisory Tribunal as well and yet he has no clue what is going on in his own newspaper,” said an unsigned editorial in Kayhan on October 23.
The Ebtekar newspaper has been repeatedly banned and reopened in Iran, including during the first term of current President Hassan Rouhani.
On October 29, the tribunal issued a warning to the newspaper, according to the Fars News Agency.

Russian Twitter Trolls Encourage Division Over Islam, Study Says
Dividing U.K. Twitter users over Islam is the primary tactic of Russian trolls, a research group said, based on analysis of 9 million tweets.
Figures released Thursday by the cross-party U.K. Demos think tank showed a St. Petersburg troll factory generated far more tweets about Islam than about Brexit, despite initial public concern over foreign interference in the 2016 referendum on leaving the European Union.
Demos used a Twitter-released data set of 3,841 blocked accounts affiliated to a group called the Internet Research Agency, which a 2017 U.S. cross-government report described as a “troll farm.”
The study also showed how accounts were “camouflaged” in the early years after they were created in 2011, tweeting mainly about fitness and exercise to appear authentic.

“Sweden’s Social Democrats are taking action over Islamic influence in the party’s youth wing after it emerged that delegates from some of the nation’s migrant-dominated no-go zones have less-than-progressive views on LGBT policy.
Following several days of headlines across the national media exposing activists’ concern over the direction of certain Social Democrat Youth (SSU) branches, the centre-left party — Sweden’s largest — said in future it would require the movement’s leaders to sign a written contract expressing their adherence to social democratic values.
With most of the controversy centred around members of the Skåne region, the Social Democrats have warned the branch has three weeks to produce an “action plan” showing how it will address complaints, or else all of its funding will be withdrawn, according to Swedish Radio.
A report in Expressen earlier this week revealed that former SSU Skåne president Rizwan Elahi, who was number 11 in the Social Democrats’ parliament list, had branded atheism an “amoral idea” and asserted that Islam is “the solution to all the world’s problems today”.
It also highlighted anti-Semitic social media posts by Omar al-Ganas, who headed the region’s Hässleholm club, and Skåne SSU Vice-President Khloe Abdel Wahab having worked for the Egyptian government as examples of the branch failing to promote social democratic ideals.
Both members have now been removed from the SSU, the organisation’s national leader Philip Botström told the media earlier this week.
Following the initial exposé, members of other SSU branches came forward to express concern over the direction of the organisation in Skåne — Sweden’s southernmost province whose capital, Malmö, includes migrant-dominated no-go zones where notorious levels of violence and frequent grenade attacks have seen neighbourhoods likened to war zones in the Middle East.
Activists told Expressen that SSU Skåne had a “very dubious attitude” towards the LGBT agenda, complaining that the organisation sent only five delegates out of 30 to Pride celebrations in Stockholm, attendance at which was mandatory.
In addition, young Social Democrats alleged that members from the Skåne branch “screamed at” and intimidated attendants from other municipalities at the annual conference, one of whom said: “I was so extremely frustrated that [Skåne delegates] could bring 20 big guys along to scare people so they no longer dare vote or talk in the way they want.”
Another activist complained: “The annual conferences are now dominated by a bunch of young men who do not respect the statutes or accepted practices of democratic work.”
But “the worst” behaviour took place at this year’s conference, during a debate on a motion that Sweden should lift its blood donation ban on men who have recently engaged in sexual activity with other males, according to several attendants.
“There was a debate where one side was in favour of giving homosexuals the same rights as heterosexuals with regards to opportunities to give blood,” one participant said. “The arguments from the opposing side were not based on fact and reason, but rather on prejudice.”
“SSU Malmö and Hässleholm said that gay men are dirty and that they are at greater risk of getting diseases because they ‘sleep around’ more, which is incorrect,” one outraged Social Democrat explained.”

“London police have failed to bring a successful prosecution for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), despite almost 750 reports of the grisly crime being dealt with by the force in the past five years.
Over the past decade, the city’s Metropolitan Police Services have referred just 37 cases to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), figures obtained by the broadcaster ITV reveal. Meanwhile, 748 people reported FGM concerns since 2013.
If the number of FGM reports made in the period from 2008 remained stable and reflected the figures between 2013 and today, the figures would suggest just 2.5 per cent were referred for prosecution in ten years.
Regardless, none have ended in punishment, and nearly half of all cases of FGM in England are reportedly recorded in London, the broadcaster adds.
In contrast, the CPS has successfully prosecuted around 15,000 “hate crime” offences a year in 2016-17 and 2015-16 across the country, with a large number in London.
FGM has been illegal in the UK for 30 years, but the first charges for the crime were only announced in March 2014, and they ended in acquittal. Three more cases have collapsed since.
France, meanwhile, criminalised the practice around the same time as the UK, and over 100 parents and two practitioners had been prosecuted by 2014 in over 40 criminal cases.
She said: “I remember being at a seminar about this years ago and one of the chief crown prosecutors was talking about this.
“She said ‘you’ll never, ever get a prosecution for FGM, it just will not happen’. I think I’m probably more hopeful than that, but I think there’s so much [pressure on the CPS to get a prosecution.
“Nobody wants to criminalise their closest and most dearest family members, but they just want the abuse to stop.”
The CPS said in a statement: “FGM is an abhorrent and damaging practice and we are determined to hold those responsible to account.
“Prosecutors work closely with police offering early advice, but when a case is referred to the CPS for a charging decision a prosecution can only be brought where there is sufficient evidence.
“Factors such as the age and vulnerability of FGM victims, who frequently do not want to report offences that could lead to them giving evidence against their family, make it extremely difficult to secure the evidence required.”
Last year, more than 5,000 new cases of FGM were recorded in the UK, and around 9,000 women sought National Health Service (NHS) help because of the practice.
The figure means there are around 14 new cases every day, and a third of the women and girls seeking help were born in Somalia, according to the NHS numbers.”

The United Kingdom was the worst affected individual country in the Western World, taking 19.12 per cent of terror-related incidents — up from 9.26 per cent in 2016 — and a remarkable 40.45 per cent of terror-related fatalities.
The proportion of terrorism attributed to Islamists was down somewhat despite an increase in total Islamist attacks, due in large part to a increase in incidents logged as ‘far-right’.
The far-right was reportedly responsible for 20.59 per cent share of terrorism in the West in 2017 — quadruple its 2016 share of 5.56 per cent.
Unlike the majority of mainstream commentators and politicians, however, the Henry Jackson Society also highlighted the threat from the far-left, which accounted for the same 20.59 per cent share of terrorism as the far-right in 2017 , and a 16.67 per cent share in 2016 — meaning it accounted for a larger proportion of terrorist violence over the two-year period.
Even more unusually, the Henry Jackson Society makes the effort to record ‘Black Supremacist’ terrorism, which accounted for a more modest 3.28 per cent share of terrorist violence across 2016-17.
Black Supremacist attacks were mostly aimed at police, but a shooting in Fresno, California, which targetted white people indiscriminately is also included — although that attack also had something of an Islamist bent to it, with suspect Kori Ali Muhammad reportedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” as he struck.”

“A Christian woman acquitted in Pakistan after eight years on death row for blasphemy plans to leave the country soon, her family said Thursday, and authorities said they arrested two prisoners last month for conspiring to kill her.
Radical Islamists mounted rallies across the country for a second day after Pakistan’s Supreme Court in a landmark ruling overturned the 2010 conviction against Asia Bibi for insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. The charge of blasphemy carries the death penalty in this majority Muslim nation.
Bibi’s acquittal posed a challenge to the government of Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Imran Khan, who came to power this summer partly by pursuing the Islamist agenda. He asked protesters not to “test the patience of the state.”
On Thursday, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the government was avoiding the use of force against demonstrators to resolve the issue peacefully.
Bibi remained at an undisclosed location Thursday, where the 54-year-old mother of five was being held for security reasons, awaiting her formal release, her brother James Masih told The Associated Press.
Masih said his sister simply would not be safe in Pakistan.
“She has no other option and she will leave the country soon,” he said. Masih would not disclose the country of her destination but both France and Spain have offered asylum.
Also on Thursday, jail officials said two inmates were arrested last month at an undisclosed detention facility for planning to kill Bibi by strangling her. They said the men were still being questioned.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
A female commando who is part of a team of police and paramilitary troops deployed to protect Bibi, told The Associated Press that Bibi was reading a Bible when the news about her acquittal was conveyed to her.
Bibi was wearing green and orange traditional Pakistani dress and a scarf when an AP reporter saw her at the facility.
According to the female commando, who asked to remain unidentified as she was not authorized to speak to media, Bibi upon hearing news of her release said the judges gave her a new life and she was grateful to them.
Officials said Bibi is at a safe facility but that she still fears for her life and has trouble sleeping, fearing someone might harm her.
Bibi’s husband, Ashiq Masih, had returned from Britain with their children in mid-October and was waiting for her to join them, the brother said.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 Islamists blocked a key road linking the capital Islamabad with the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Thursday, demanding Bibi be publicly hanged. Authorities deployed paramilitary troops, signaling they could move in to clear the roads.
Hundreds also blocked another key motorway, linking Islamabad with major cities such as Lahore and Peshawar, chanting slogans against Bibi and demanding her execution.
Later on Thursday, lawyer Ghulam Mustafa filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting the judges review the acquittal as the government began talks with rally organizers to end their protests, which led to dozens of vehicles being torched.
Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers in parliament called Thursday for reforming the judicial system and Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law — so that innocents like Bibi wouldn’t spent years languishing in jail.
Hafiz Saeed, a radical cleric wanted by the United States, urged followers to hold rallies across Pakistan on Friday to condemn Bibi’s release. Saeed is the founder of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba group, which was blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.
Protesters, rallied by firebrand cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi, also set up roadblocks and burned tires in the southern port city of Karachi while hundreds clashed Thursday with police in various parts of eastern Punjab province.
Many parents kept their children from school, fearing more violence.
The Islamists also called for the killing of the three judges, including Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, who acquitted Bibi.
The three are on the hit list of Rizvi’s Tehreek-e-Labbaik party, which has demanded a public execution for Bibi. Rizvi has managed to turn out tens of thousands of supporters in the past, often forcing authorities to bow to his demands on religious matters.
Tehreek-e-Labbaik claimed Thursday that two of its supporters were killed by police fire during overnight clashes in Karachi. No government official could immediately confirm any casualties.
In his televised speech, Prime Minister Khan warned the Islamists: “Let me make it very clear to you that the state will fulfill its responsibility.”
Bibi’s lawyer, Saiful Malook, has gone into hiding as the extremists had threatened his life as well.
On Wednesday, cleric Afzal Qadri, with Rizvi by his side, urged a crowd of supporters outside the Punjab provincial parliament in the city of Lahore to revolt against army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and overthrow Khan’s government.
Bibi’s acquittal, however, has been seen as a hopeful sign by Christians in Pakistan, where the mere rumor of blasphemy can spark lynchings. Religious minorities, who have been repeatedly targeted by extremists, fear the law because it is often used to settle scores and to pressure minorities.
Bibi was arrested in 2009 after she was accused of blasphemy following a quarrel with two fellow female farm workers who refused to drink from a water container used by a Christian. A few days later, a mob accused her of insulting Islam’s prophet, leading to her 2010 conviction.
Bibi’s family has always maintained her innocence and says she never insulted the prophet.”

According to the FCO website, the new programme “will help leaders understand how biases around race, gender, class, and educational background” can result in a failure to recognise what is described as “different types of talent,” and that “these biases can keep ethnic minority staff stuck in… junior grades in the Foreign Office.”
“In the twenty-first century it is essential that our diplomats look more like our country as a whole,” remarked Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the unpopular Remain-supporting former Health Secretary who took over at the FCO after Brexit-backing Boris Johnson resigned to protest Theresa May’s proposed deal with the EU.
He did not elaborate on why it was “essential” that FCO staff match the ethnic make-up of the general population, simply asserting that “two of Britain’s greatest assets are our diversity and deep inter-country ties.”
Ethnic minority staff do, in fact, already account for 13.4 per cent of the FCO workforce, which matches ethnic minorities’ official share of the general population fairly closely — but Hunt insists that “Despite the improvements we’ve made on improving overall diversity, there remains a stubborn problem in improving racial diversity at the Foreign Office at senior grades, particularly amongst black staff.”
“Our reverse mentoring scheme will be a practical way for us to challenge stereotypes and improve diversity,” he added.
“It will help us use the fantastic people the FCO employs to forge stronger connections and boost our prosperity.”
The FCO introduced the scheme as a way of celebrating the end of Black History Month, taking the opportunity to promote its new Black skin, Whitehall: Race and the Foreign Office, 1945 to 2018 report as well.

Unemployed white South Africans blocked from registering on government jobs website
The Yes government jobs website, aimed at helping unemployed young South Africans, has come under heavy criticism from Solidarity.
The website, and underlying Yes initiative, was launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in March as a partnership with business and organised labour.
It was set up to help young South Africans who have been unemployed for longer than six months find a job.
“Yes recognises the critical role the youth play in shaping our economy and our country. Yet six million young people are shut out of the economy. The only way to reduce inequality is to get us all into work, to build incomes and to invest inclusively. Now is the time to lend a hand,” states the Yes website.
Solidarity has stated that young, white South Africans are “unwelcome” however, as they cannot register on the website.
“The problem is that on the Yes webpage, it blatantly declares to prospective white applicants that this project will only be open to black, coloured, and Indian candidates,” Solidarity said.
The organisation stated that the exclusion is part of a “long list of policies obsessed with race”, and that exclusion based on race was becoming the norm.
“We dare not allow racial exclusion to become commonplace and normal – the past has shown us how dangerous that is.”
Solidarity said it will draft a letter to the President asking that this scheme should permit white people to apply.

NYPD releases photos of Fairfax sisters who were found dead along Hudson River
NEW YORK – The New York City Police Department has released photos of two sisters from Northern Virginia who were found dead – fully clothed and bound together with duct tape – on rocks on Manhattan’s West Side last week.
Police released the photos in an effort to develop more information about the sisters.
Authorities in New York and Fairfax County in Virginia have identified them as 16-year-old Tala Farea and 22-year-old Rotana Farea.
Investigators have said they did not see any obvious signs of trauma on the bodies when they were found on Oct. 24 in the area of 68th Street and Riverside Park.

When the Barcelona terror attack took place August 17, 2017, as horrible as it was (13 deaths, 130 injured), the jihadists did not consider it a success. They had a more lethal project. They wanted to drive vans packed with explosives into the of the Sagrada Familia basilica and two other tourist areas of the city. That, however, was the last major jihadist attack in a Western country. The Manchester attack had taken place two month earlier, on May 22, 2017; the attack in Nice, France, had taken place on July 14, 2016; and the in Orlando attack, in Florida, on June 12, 2016.
The destruction of the Islamic State under President Donald J. Trump has not only deprived jihadists of what had become a rear base and training camp; it also deprived them of the idea that they could quickly defeat the West.
Soon, awareness of the danger embodied by radical Islam faded in the United States and was largely erased in Europe. Knife attacks and the slaughter of passers-by in France or Britain were not treated by the mainstream media as more important than road accidents. Jihadist murderers were usually immediately defined by the authorities as mentally disturbed. In Europe, the names of the murderers were often hidden to avoid possibly firing up anti-Muslim “prejudices”.
What happens in other parts of the world rarely makes headlines and is usually treated as a local problem of no global importance. Stabbing Israelis and launching rockets and incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza into Israel are looked on as strictly part of “the Middle East conflict.” Attacks on Coptic Christians in Egypt are defined as an Egyptian problem. More than 1,800 Christians massacred in Nigeria are barely mentioned in the news. The death sentence for blasphemy in countries such as Pakistan are not mentioned at all.

QARAQOSH, Iraq — Christians are gradually returning to their historic homeland in northern Iraq, after three years of ISIS occupation.
The lucky ones managed to flee before the ISIS onslaught in the pre-dawn hours of August 6, 2014, and returned to find their houses intact. Most, however, are facing tremendous damage to their homes and families from a war that pitted neighbor against neighbor, community against community, tearing apart bonds forged over generations.
Yohanna Younis Towaya, 54, a prominent businessman and farmer, returned to find his home burned and looted. “One wall, next to my father’s house, was completely blown out but we repaired it,” he says. His father’s house, next door, he says, has been flattened by an allied air strike: ISIS fighters turned it into a fighting post.
Towaya says he doubts he will ever rebuild his father’s house, like the 116 such buildings in this once-thriving Christian economic center. “ISIS fighters are buried there beneath the rubble,” he says. “Sometimes, you can smell them.”

Ex-con claims feds ‘wanted to get rid of’ James ‘Whitey’ Bulger
Prison guards almost certainly allowed inmates to fatally assault James “Whitey” Bulger following his arrival at a West Virginia lockup — and high-ranking federal officials probably transferred the notorious Boston gangster there to “get rid of him,” an ex-con-turned-journalist told The Post on Wednesday.
“It just seems impossible to me that this could have happened without awareness, not only at the level of the guards on the tier,” writer and producer Richard Stratton said.
Stratton said it was inconceivable that Bulger, an infamous FBI informant who helped the feds decimate his Mafia rivals, wouldn’t be placed in protective custody at the Hazelton penitentiary, where two inmates were killed in separate incidents earlier this year.
“He’s going to be exposed in a way where he can easily be killed, and then one day later he’s murdered,” Stratton said.

What makes citizens obey the law is not always their sterling character. Instead, fear of punishment — the shame of arrest, fines or imprisonment — more often makes us comply with laws. Law enforcement is not just a way to deal with individual violators but also a way to remind society at large that there can be no civilization without legality.
Or, as 17th-century British statesman George Savile famously put it: “Men are not hanged for stealing horses, but that horses may not be stolen.”
In the modern world, we call such prompt, uniform and guaranteed law enforcement “deterrence,” from the Latin verb meaning “to frighten away.” One protester who disrupts a speech is not the problem. But if unpunished, he green-lights hundreds more like him.
Worse still, when one law is left unenforced, then all sorts of other laws are weakened.
The result of hundreds of “sanctuary cities” is not just to forbid full immigration enforcement in particular jurisdictions. They also signal that U.S. immigration law, and by extension other laws, can be ignored.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Turkey, which hosts some 3.5 million refugees, is generally considered a transit or bulwark country in the ongoing refugee crisis. What is less known is that Turkey is also generating refugees of its own.
According to data from the Greek Asylum Service, over the past two years, the number of asylum applicants from Turkey has grown from 189 in 2016 to 2,463 in August 2018. This represents an increase of approximately 1,300%. Moreover, according to Eurostat, approximately 25,000 Turkish citizens applied for asylum in European countries between 2016 and 2017.
The most popular destination is Germany because there is already a substantial Turkish minority there. Between 2016 and 2017, more than 14,000 Turkish citizens applied for asylum in Germany alone. Compared to the number of applicants from countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, these numbers appear unimpressive. However, if we consider the alarming rate at which the number is increasing, and that Turkey is a relatively stable and somewhat democratic country, the refugee flows from the country are a cause for concern. Their causes and potential impact on the EU warrant examination.

Armed Migrants in Caravan Opened Fire on Mexican Cops, Say Authorities

Mexican authorities arrested two Hondurans who allegedly shot at federal police officers escorting the migrant caravan across the southern state of Chiapas. The attack follows shortly after government warnings about Molotov cocktail attacks around a second caravan near the border with Guatemala.
The attack took place near Ignacio Zaragoza, Chiapas, when members of Mexico’s Federal Police were escorting the migrant caravan as part of “Operativo Caminante” or “Operation Walker” across the southern border state. According to Mexico’s Interior Secretariat, two men identified only as 22-year-old “Jerson” and 17-year-old “Carlos” spotted the group of police officers guarding the caravan and began firing at them.
The attackers’ pistol jammed, allowing police officers to arrest them without any injuries. Federal authorities seized a .380 caliber Glock with nine rounds still in the magazine.

Second migrant caravan storms into Mexico: ‘Violent’ group from Central America carrying BOMBS and guns defies a huge police presence to cross the border from Guatemala as Trump deploys 5,200 troops
The second migrant caravan, believed to be armed with bombs and guns, crossed into Mexico on Monday despite a huge police presence.
Hundreds of migrants following in the footsteps of the first caravan heading to the U.S. border crossed a river from Guatemala.
A low-flying police helicopter hovered overhead as the migrants waded in large groups through the Suchiate River’s murky waters, apparently trying to use the downdraft from its rotors to discourage them.
Guatemala’s Noti7 channel reported that one man drowned and aired video of a man dragging a seemingly lifeless body from the river.
Once on the Mexican side the migrants were surrounded and escorted by black-uniformed officers as sirens wailed.
The second group back at the Guatemalan frontier has been more unruly than the first that crossed. Guatemala’s Interior Ministry said Guatemalan police officers were injured when the migrant group broke through border barriers on Guatemala’s side of the bridge.
