  1. Saudi Arabia transfers $100 million to U.S. on day of Pompeo visit to discuss missing journalist

The United States received a payment of $100 million from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the same day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Riyadh to discuss the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a State Department official confirmed Wednesday amid global calls for answers in the case.

Saudi Arabia publicly pledged the payment to support U.S. stabilization efforts in northeastern Syria in August, but questions persisted about when and if Saudi officials would come through with the money.

The timing of the transfer, first reported by The New York Times, raised questions about a potential payoff as Riyadh seeks to manage the blowback over allegations that Saudi agents were responsible for Khashoggi’s disappearance. The State Department denied any connection between the payment and Pompeo’s discussions with Saudi officials about Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributing columnist.

“We always expected the contribution to be finalized in the fall time frame,” Brett McGurk, the State Department’s envoy to the anti-Islamic State coalition, said in a statement. “The specific transfer of funds has been long in process and has nothing to do with other events or the secretary’s visit.”

Saudi Arabia, an oil rich monarchy and staunch U.S. ally, has long relied on its financial largesse to persuade partners to support its foreign policy objectives. Western diplomats suspect that the kingdom will also compensate Turkey for its willingness to launch a joint investigation on Khashoggi’s disappearance – a payback that could come in the form of large-scale debt relief, strategic buyouts or other arrangements that boost Turkey’s ailing economy.

Khashoggi’s disappearance has hurt the reputation of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, whose close relationship with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner has put him at the center of the administration’s Middle East policy.

Turkish authorities say Khashoggi was killed Oct. 2 during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain a document required to get married.

Trump initially promised “severe punishment” for Saudi Arabia if the United States determined that Saudi agents killed Khashoggi. But the president has since floated an alternative theory involving “rogue killers” and compared the case to the sexual assault allegations against recently confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“Here we go again with you know you’re guilty until proven innocent,” Trump told The Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday.

During Pompeo’s visit to Saudi Arabia, the top diplomat and the crown prince smiled for the cameras and emphasized the two countries’ mutual interests. When asked if he had learned any details about Khashoggi’s disappearance, Pompeo told reporters that “I don’t want to talk about any of the facts; they didn’t want to, either, in that they want to have the opportunity to complete this investigation in a thorough way.”

The Saudi payment to support stabilization efforts in Syria is a cornerstone of Trump’s “America First” strategy, which calls on regional countries to take on a greater burden for security challenges, including Syria. In August, U.S. officials hailed the Saudi pledge and said the United States would use $230 million earmarked to help stabilize Syria for other purposes.

McGurk, the State Department envoy, arrived in Saudi Arabia on Friday to discuss how the $100 million in stabilization money would be spent, said a State Department official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversations.

The official said the timing was a coincidence, and that transferring the $100 million “has multiple steps all of which clicked through over the past two months.”

Middle East experts said the timing of the transfer likely sent a clear message to the Trump administration.

“In all probability, the Saudis want Trump to know that his cooperation in covering for the Khashoggi affair is important to the Saudi monarch,” said Joshua Landis, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. “Much of its financial promises to the U.S. will be contingent on this cooperation.”

The Saudi Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

  2. 45th Space Wing gears up for surge in launch activity

The 45th Space Wing made headlines when Schiess’ predecessor Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith started what he called the “drive to 48,” or 48 launches per year. Schiess said he plans to pick up where Monteith left off. “We’re at 20 launches, and we have five on the schedule for the rest of the year,” he said. “We’re hoping for 24 so we can say we got half way to the drive to 48.”

NOTE: This is always a perfect time to mention John Walker’s astonishingly prescient 1993 paper, “A Rocket a Day Keeps the High Costs Away“.

    • A space elevator or two will change everything, it will introduce new technology and open the universe up for exploration and colonization.

  3. SUPERMOM!

Mom suffers horrific injuries while shielding her baby during freak hailstorm

“I wasn’t driving very fast because I couldn’t see very well,” Simpson said. “I couldn’t see in front of me, I couldn’t even see the line on the road.”

Simpson said she heard a loud bang and then felt water start pouring into her vehicle. After realizing the rear window where her daughter was sitting had been shattered, the quick-acting mom jumped into the backseat and used herself as a human shield to protect the infant.

Eventually, the tennis-ball sized hail smashed another of the vehicle’s windows, and though Simpson says she attempted to shield both her grandmother and her infant, both women ended up sustaining severe injuries from the massive ice chunks.

    • Why is it that IEDs/suicide bombers are like taxis, never around when you direly need one? I doubt if anyone(relatives apart) would really miss it if parliament house was vaporized. Any such house that fails to pass such a motion IS CRIMINAL and TRAITOROUS to the people anywhere anytime as to do so is racist in the extreme.

  5. Islamists are planning rally in downtown Hamburg, Germany–
The supporters of an Islamist organisation under observation by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz) since 2016 want to demonstrate in Hamburg’s city centre from 3.45 p.m. on Saturday, the 20th of October.Under the motto “Freedom for Alparslan Kuytul”, the Islamic Furkan community is planning a rally from Kurt-Schumacher avenue to Hansa square (St. Georg).According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the extremist organization’s goal is the establishment of a so-called “Islamic civilization”, a kind of worldwide caliphate in which the regulations of the Sharia are to apply. The Furkan community then regards democratic values as incompatible with its ideology. The organizers expect 80 rally participants on Saturday. According to estimates by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution, however, the number of demonstrators is likely to be significantly higher. Alparslan Kuytul is the spiritual leader of the Furkan movement (“Furkan E?itim ve Hizmet Vakfi”), which originated in Turkey, as well as founder and director of the “Furkan Foundation”.Kuytul was arrested on the 30th of January 2018 with several of his supporters in Adana (Turkey), the organisation’s headquarters. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Turkish authorities accuse him, among other things, of having agitated against constitutional order and public security under the label of the Foundation’s work and of having founded an underground organisation. The centres of the organisation are Hamburg and Dortmund. In Hamburg, the organisation relies on the association “Jugend, Bildung und Soziales” (formerly: Furkan Centre for Education and Furkan Education and Culture Centre). The movement currently has a followership of over 150 in Hamburg; at the end of December 2017 there were around 100, and in 2016 around 80, including young people.

On Wednesday, at approximately 3:40 a.m. Israeli time, sirens blared throughout the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva (Beersheba) shattering the stillness of the night. In what is considered to be a major escalation, Gazan-based terrorists fired a single rocket at the city, which is located approximately 25 miles from Gaza Strip. Miraculously, the projectile, which landed in a courtyard, caused no casualties but five people were treated for shock. Israel responded by hitting 20 military targets throughout Gaza. The Israeli Air Force also launched a precision strike against a group of terrorists in the midst of setting up a rocket launch from the northern Gaza Strip. The IDF later released video footage of the strike, which appears to have liquidated the rocket squad. The brazen and indiscriminate terrorist attack comes amid talk by Israel’s political echelon of the need to take decisive military action against Hamas, the entity that controls the Strip.
This past Friday, Palestinian terrorists, using violent demonstrations as cover, placed an explosive charge on the security fence marking the border between Gaza Strip and Israel and blew a hole through it. They then charged through the newly created opening toward the direction of a nearby Israeli outpost. An alert female Israel Defense Force soldier of the “Nesher” battalion quickly detected the infiltration and guided a response team to the area. All three infiltrators were liquidated. An additional four Palestinians were killed that day while engaged in violent Hamas-inspired, anti-Israel border rioting, rioting which has been occurring on a regular basis with no letup since May.
That same day, Israeli firefighters were forced to battle and extinguish 10 blazes sparked by incendiary balloons sent by Palestinians in Gaza and carried by wind patterns into Israel. Thus far, this form of eco-terror has devoured some 7,000 acres of forest and agricultural land. Large swaths of what were previously productive agricultural lands and lush greenery have been transformed into charred and blackened acreage. Israeli farmers on the Gaza periphery have lost millions of dollars as a result of what has been dubbed “kite terror.”
Just a day earlier, Israeli combat engineers detected and destroyed a Hamas terror tunnel that penetrated 200 meters into Israeli territory. It was the 15th such tunnel that Israel had destroyed since October 2017. Israel estimates that the cost of constructing the tunnel was $3 million, money that could have been spent on improving the lives of ordinary Gazans.
The best solution for Israel in taming Hamas is an approach that lies somewhere between mowing the lawn and toppling the junta. Israel’s 2014 Protective Edge campaign inflicted massive harm on Hamas and was regarded as a military success; yet partly in an effort to placate Obama, Israel operated with extreme restraint. In the next war, Israel should substantially relax the self-imposed limitations it places on its military. Israel’s desire to curtail collateral damage is viewed upon as a weakness by its amoral enemies, who cynically exploit the civilian population by routinely utilizing them as human shields. Moreover, such self-imposed restraints substantially hamper the IDF’s freedom of action and undermine its effectiveness while potentially exposing its personnel to greater danger. Additionally, the IDF should not limit its targeted liquidations to military commanders. Hamas’s political chiefs like Ismail Haniyeh and Mahmoud al-Zahar, who are keen on sending young Palestinians to their deaths, should be placed on notice that they are now fair game.

    • It’s just awful.
Kids are sick from the smoke, months of trauma with no let up. The fields and the nature preserves gone, heartbreaking. More tunnels.
Now bombing. Sderot is bad enough, but all the way to Beersheba…

Shrinks my tolerance for idiot politics and self-indulgent, theatrical hysteria to just about zero. These spoiled crazies need a real war, get some perspective. Or maybe it’s too late.

      • “Or maybe it’s too late.

It’s never too late to liquidate any of the Hamas poobahs.

        • I’m thinking about the freakish mobs in the West. Let them face the IEDs and firebombs stones on the Gaza border, blinded and choking from black smoke of burning tires.

      • Its not too late but it is getting close to that time, the West has to wake up and fight.

    • “Hamas’s political chiefs like Ismail Haniyeh and Mahmoud al-Zahar, who are keen on sending young Palestinians to their deaths, should be placed on notice that they are now fair game.”

Hosea! With a rattlesnake like Hamas, you chop of the head, not the tail.

Chopping off a rattlesnake’s tail only makes it silent and more dangerous.

      • Not so! With Islamic regimes you have to take out the leaders, the mullahs and anyone with power as it otherwise just begins anew. The Nazis & the communists(& the muslims) have the right idea: remove all potential leaders. Am I condoning this? If you wage war vs an enemy who wages total war then I am as it then is about survival not ethics.

        • That is what this war is about and what people use to think, of course politicians don’t want to use the assassination option since it makes them targets for possible retaliation.

  7. The temperature definately seems to be rising. And those recent attacks against Orthodox Jewish men on the streets must necessarily be considered part of an on-going strategy that has a next phase.

    • The next phase will be killing the Jews and Old Whites no just beat them. The actions and escalation of violence is straight out of the Nazi play book, They weren’t the first or the last to use this tactic but they are the ones who get blamed for developing this type of war.

  8. Reports suggest Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini is considering running to replace Juncker as Head of the European Commission whose term ends in October next year.

Salvini speaking to La Repubblica said European allies have asked him to run for Juncker’s job next year, saying: “It’s true, various friends in European countries have asked, they are proposing me.

“It’s a compliment that they see me as a reference point for defending the people, even outside of Italy.”

After meeting with several anti-establishment European figures such as Le Pen and Victor Orban earlier this year, Salvini suggested some of them want him to run: “I could apply to lead Europe, the populist front asks for it.”

Salvini as head of the European Commission would be sure to shock the EU establishment. Europe is Eurosceptic!

  10. UK, Interpol to Deploy Experts in Africa, Asia to Stop Sex Predators in Aid Orgs (sputniknews, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201810181068991920-aid-agencies-uk-interpol/

“The UK Department for International Development and Interpol are launching a pilot program to stop sexual predators from being able to move between aid organizations without being caught, an announcement will reveal at the International Safeguarding Summit on Thursday.

Named Operation Soteria after the Greek goddess of safety, a new Interpol project will include deploying teams of specialists to two regional hubs in Africa and Asia to strengthen criminal record checks and information sharing between all 192 members, including high risk countries, and help ensure a more robust law enforcement response against individuals.

“A critical part of Interpol’s mission is to protect the most vulnerable members of society from the most dangerous. This is all the more important when sexual predators attempt to exploit the very people — be it men, women or children — they are supposed to be safeguarding from harm,” Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock said.

Aid organizations in the UK came under increased scrutiny following a scandal involving the aid charity Oxfam. In 2018, allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of vulnerable people in Haiti, struck by a devastating earthquake in 2010, by Oxfam aid workers surfaced in the media.

Oxfam has apologized for the behavior of the nine workers who were alleged to be involved. Soon after that the charity’s deputy chief executive, Penny Lawrence, resigned over the scandal, taking “full responsibility.”

The resignation may have been prompted by a warning from the International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who suggested that if Oxfam couldn’t show moral leadership, it risked losing government funding.

Activists have pushed for more monitoring of aid organizations to prevent sexual abuse of the most vulnerable in affected countries and ensure that government money spent on aid operations doesn’t end up in the pockets of sex predators and criminals.

“This is a pivotal moment. The entire international aid community is in one place, as it looks to change for the better the way the aid sector works. Our message to sexual predators using the sector as a cover for their crimes is ‘Your time is up’,” Ms. Mordaunt is expected to say at the summit on Thursday.

Operation Soteria is a five-year project costing $13 million (£10 million). The UK will commit $2.6 million (£2 million), subject to approvals for the inception phase.”

(Bloomberg) — As the push to legalize marijuana gains momentum, so is evidence that more permissive policies on the drug are putting motorists at risk.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found, in a study to be released on Thursday, that traffic accidents are rising in states that have legalized recreational marijuana. That followed stark warnings from the National Transportation Safety Board, which on Tuesday issued several recommendations to combat drug-impaired driving.

“The last thing in the world that we want is to introduce another legal substance where we may be adding to that toll and to the carnage on our highways,” said David Harkey, president of the Insurance Institute. “With marijuana impairment, we’re just now starting to understand what we don’t know.”

After retail sales of recreational cannabis began, the frequency of collision insurance claims in Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington State rose about 6 percent higher than in nearby states where marijuana is still illegal, the IIHS said in the study.

A separate IIHS study saw a 5 percent increase in the rate of crashes per million vehicle registrations reported to police in Colorado, Oregon and Washington versus neighbors that haven’t legalized the drug.

  16. Manhattan DA: Lead Detective in Weinstein Case Told Accuser to Delete Messages
“This is the age of technology,” the president of the detectives union fired back. “People keep loads of personal info on their phones that they prefer remains confidential.”

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has told Harvey Weinstein’s attorney that the lead detective in the movie mogul’s sexual assault case advised an alleged victim to delete messages from her phone before turning it over to prosecutors.

The bombshell revelation comes less than a week after the office dropped part of the case against Weinstein, after evidence emerged that the same detective had coached a witness to stay silent about evidence that cast doubt on the account one of Weinstein’s three accusers.

The DA’s office sent Weinstein attorney Benjamin Brafman a letter on Tuesday saying it had been contacted last week by an attorney for “Complainant 2,” who is the complaining witness behind three counts in the case against Weinstein.

According to the letter, the alleged victim told the DA’s office that she had expressed concern about turning over phones to prosecutors because they contained personal information.

  18. This robot co-taught a course at West Point

Bina48, the first-ever robot to complete a college course, finished another mission today: It became the first robot to co-teach a university-level class.

Why it matters: The experiment at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point sought to determine if AI can “support a liberal education model,” says William Barry, a West Point professor who has been using Bina48 to teach for years.

What’s happening: Bina48 co-taught two sessions of an introduction to ethics philosophy course — which covers ethical reasoning, just-war theory and the use of artificial intelligence in society. In the classroom were almost 100 students, along with Barry and Maj. Scott Parsons, an assistant professor at West Point.

The objective was to understand whether AI “can authentically support teaching in the classroom, where it enhances students’ comprehension and holds interest,” Barry says.

How it works: Bina48 is fed a mosaic of general knowledge, in the form of what Barry calls “mind files.”

In preparation for today, AI developers fed Bina48 troves of data about war theory and political philosophy, in addition to Barry’s lesson plan.
“We asked not to hook her on the internet … because she can easily run to Wikipedia or the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. We want to run her just on the algorithm,” Barry says.
When it’s Bina48’s turn to teach, it peruses its background knowledge and lesson plan and delivers a lecture. And if a student asks a question, the bot can reply out loud.

After today’s class, Barry tells Axios the cadets were wholly receptive:

  19. Trump reluctant to abandon Riyadh over missing journalist, wants evidence

ANKARA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he did not want to abandon ally Saudi Arabia over the disappearance of a Saudi journalist and has asked for audio recordings Turkish sources say indicate he was killed by Saudi agents.

Trump said he was waiting for a full report on what had happened to Jamal Khashoggi from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, whom he sent to Saudi Arabia and Turkey to meet with officials over the disappearance of the Saudi government critic. Trump and Pompeo are scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT) on Thursday.

Turkish officials have said they believe Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who was critical of the authoritarian kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 and his body removed. The Saudis have denied the allegations.

Turkish sources have told Reuters the authorities have an audio recording indicating Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate. He has not been seen since entering the building.

Turkey’s pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper on Wednesday published what it said were details from audio recordings that purported to document Khashoggi’s torture and interrogation.

  20. Dem gubernatorial candidate says ‘blue wave’ will include illegal aliens

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams believes the much hoped for “blue wave” by her party will involve legal and illegal voters.

The so-called wave has been on the minds of the “resistance” party since President Trump took office. Belief in it is fueled by an assumption that hatred for the man in the White House will translate into energy at the voting booth and, thus, a Democrat takeover of both Houses of Congress.

Abrams wants you to know that energy comes from numerous sources – from people of all different races, religions, and sexual orientations. It’ll even involve “undocumented” aliens, in her view.

“The thing of it is, the blue wave is African American,” she said at a campaign event. “It is white. It is Latino. It is Asian-Pacific Islander.”

“It is made up of those who’ve been told that they are not worthy of being here,” Abrams added. “It is comprised of those who are documented and undocumented.”

  22. Liverpool BLOODBATH: Horror on streets as man dies in sixth shooting in 10 DAYS (express, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1033190/Liverpool-news-UK-crime-police-shooting-Wavertree

“A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been shot dead in Liverpool in the sixth shooting in the city in just ten days.

Police have launched a murder investigation after armed officers were called to Alderson Road, Wavertree, at 10.40pm on Wednesday night to reports a man had been shot.

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital where he died in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Merseyside Police confirmed they are treating the shooting as a “targeted attack”.

A horrified neighbour, who heard the shooting, told the Liverpool Echo: “It was just before 11 and I heard four shots being fired on the street.

“I heard the sirens arriving outside about two or three minutes later.

“Neighbours are saying the guy was shot four times.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman said the man has been identified and his next of kin are in the process of being informed.

He said: “We can confirm that a murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man following a shooting in Wavertree last night, Wednesday 17th October.

“At 10.40pm, we were called to Alderson Road to a report of a 25 year-old man having been shot. Armed officers and the ambulance service attended and the man was taken to hospital where he died in the early hours.

“The man has been identified and his next of kin are in the process of being informed.

“The investigation is in the early stages but at this stage it is believed to be a targeted attack.”

The shooting is the sixth on Merseyside in the last 10 days.

Earlier this month, Carl Russell, 27, was shot dead by a gunman on a bicycle in Belle Vale, Liverpool, in front of his girlfriend.”

  23. Yes, Harvard has different SAT score cutoffs based on race, sex, but that’s not the whole story
By LU Staff October 18, 2018

Yes, Harvard Dean of Admissions William Fitzsimmons testified this week, the school does maintain different SAT score standards for applicants based on their race and sex. But, the dean was quick to clarify, the practice is not discriminatory.

So began the trial that could determine once and for all the fate of affirmative action. The action was brought by Students for Fair Admissions, a group representing Asian-American applicants that claims that Harvard violated their civil rights by penalizing them for their race.

  24. Another victim of Bloodbath Britain: Father-of-two, 46, is beaten to death by ‘drug dealers after telling them to stop selling outside his home’ – as figures reveal UK murder rate is rocketing (dailymail, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6290127/Father-two-ex-boxer-46-brutally-beaten-death-drug-dealers.html

“A father-of-two was beaten to death after telling drug dealers to stop selling outside his home as statistics today reveal the murder rate has skyrocketed by 14 per cent in Wild West Britain.

Bus driver Ian Tomlin, 46, is the 113th victim of murder in the capital after being brutally battered at the block of flats in Battersea, south London where he lived.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, shortly after his assailants fled following the attack yesterday afternoon.

Shocked witnesses said there was ‘blood everywhere’ and claimed ex-boxer Ian may also have been stabbed in the neck.

It comes as government statistics show the murder rate in the UK has soared by 14 per cent from 630 last year to 719 this year.

And other violent crimes such as those involving a knife have also risen to 39,332 offences, the highest since 2011.

Speaking at the scene in Battersea, south London, Ian’s grieving father Cecil Tomlin, 84, said his son shared his fears over people dealing drugs outside his ground floor flat two months ago.

Great-grandfather and dad-of-seven Cecil, who lives nearby, said he believed drug dealers had killed his son.

He said: ‘He has been afraid of them.

‘He don’t smoke and they were selling drugs outside his house.

‘He said ‘Don’t sell here!’ He said ‘Don’t come here and sell drugs because I can’t stand the scent of it’.

‘He said ‘no you don’t come in’.

‘He used to do boxing. He was a very good father.

‘I know he was a good man, he was very good, he was very kind to everybody. Everybody likes him.

‘The Government needs to do something because they are very bad men.’

London is at the centre of fears of rising levels of violence, after the number of killings in the capital topped 100 this summer.

Statistics released today show the number of homicides nationwide is up from 630 to 719, with overall recorded crime up by almost 10%.

The number of offences registered as involving a knife or sharp instrument, 39,332, was the highest since 2011, when comparable records started.

The data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also showed jumps in the numbers of recorded robberies (up 22%), sexual offences (up 18%), vehicle-related theft (up 7%) and burglaries (2%).

The 46-year-old was described as the ‘loveliest, kindest guy’ by a neighbour in his estate today.

The woman wished not to be named over fear of reprisals from his killers but added: ‘He was a devoted dad.

‘Ian was very against the drug dealers right where he was murdered on that first floor landing and especially the antisocial behaviour when he had his children with him – noise up to four of five in the morning.

‘The police haven’t been able to tackle the rise of drugs on this estate…”

  25. Focus on slavery is putting black children off history, teachers warned (telegraph, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2018/10/17/focus-slavery-putting-black-children-history-teachers-warned/

“teachers must stop devoting so much time to slavery because it puts black children off History, the Royal Historical Society has said.

A new report by the society has found that the “seemingly relentless focus” on the exploitation and abolition of slavery can be “intellectually limiting and, at times, alienating” for black pupils.

Aside from slavery, the history of British black and minority ethnic (BME) communities are “often absent” from the classroom, the report said. In order to foster a more inclusive environment for black students, teachers must “go beyond these limited vantage points”, it added.

“It is important that the history of race and ethnicity is integrated fully into the curriculum, rather than being relegated to a dedicated session or course,” it said.

The report, titled Race, Ethnicity & Equality in UK History, seeks to identify why History students from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds lag behind their peers in terms of academic attainment.

It also examines why BME students and staff are underrepresented in History departments across British universities.

The report says that creating History reading lists for students which do not feature black authors can a “barrier” for BME students.

School teachers and university academics told to “question the absence of BME historians from reading lists” drawn up by their colleagues. When compiling their own reading lists, they should “include and draw attention to” BME writers, it added.

Teachers and academics should also “diversify” the content of their courses so that they are not “composed primarily or entirely of White (or White male) European authors”, the report said.

The Royal Historical Society, which was founded in 1868 by Royal Charter, polled over 700 of its members for the report. It found that 86 per cent reported that in recent years, their department has sought to broaden its curriculum beyond Britain and Europe.

However, almost a fifth (17.5 per cent) reported that such moves had been met with resistance, with some respondent saying that attempts to widen the curriculum were seen by their colleagues as “not ‘real’ history”.

Students and academics at a number of universities have called for courses to be “decolonised” and include more works by writers from BME backgrounds.

Baroness Amos, the Labour life peer who runs the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas), has said that the university is decolonising its curricula as part of a culture shift.

Students at Soas have previously called for figures such as Plato, Descartes and Immanuel Kant to be largely dropped from the curriculum because they are white, while insisting that “the majority of philosophers on our courses” should be from Africa and Asia.

Soas students’ union said that when studying philosophy “the majority of philosophers on our courses” should be from Africa and Asia, as part of wider campaign to “decolonise” the university, as it seeks to “address the structural and epistemological legacy of colonialism”.”

  26. Treasury Dept. official leaked financial records of Trump associates to BuzzFeed
By Daily Caller News Foundation October 17, 2018

A U.S. Treasury Department official was arrested Wednesday and charged with providing a reporter with sensitive reports related to suspicious banking transactions of several Trump associates.

Natalie Mayflower Sours Edwards, a senior official at Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), was arrested for leaking documents known as Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) that were cited in a series of news articles published by BuzzFeed News.

She is charged with one count of unauthorized disclosures of suspicious activity reports and one count of conspiracy to make unauthorized disclosures of suspicious activity reports. The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan.

According to a government complaint, Edwards leaked documents of banking records for former Trump associates Paul Manafort and Rick Gates. She also leaked financial reports of Maria Butina, a Russian national indicted on charges of acting as an undercover Russian agent.

  27. Officers wasting time investigating wolf whistles under drive to target hate crime, police leader warns (telegraph, Oct 17, 2018)
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/17/drive-target-hate-crime-forcing-police-investigate-wolf-whistles/

“he drive to target hate crime is forcing police officers to spend valuable time investigating wolf-whistles, bad manners and impolite comments, a police leader has warned.

Sergeant Richard Cooke, the recently elected chairman of the West Midlands Police Federation, said forces were expected to record and follow up reports of hate crime, even when no criminal offence had taken place.

Writing in the Telegraph, Mr Cooke warns police officers would be dispatched to offer words of advice to people, but this meant they had less time to focus on “genuine crimes” such as burglary and violence.

Mr Cooke said he did not believe this was what the public expected of its police service. While applauding the principle behind protecting those at risk of hurtful abuse, officers have expressed their frustration at being drawn into what they see as social rather than criminal issues.

Mr Cooke, who represents 6,500 rank and file officers in the country’s second largest police force, said: “I fear a dangerous precedent could be set, where our scant resources are skewed further and further away from the genuine crisis in public safety taking place on our urban homes and streets.

“Nobody, especially police officers, would ever want to see any elderly person or woman subjected to any sort of crime. The same goes for any other innocent member of the community. But we do have laws to address all manner of crimes and anti-social behaviour already.”

Earlier this week the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, announced that he had asked the Law Commission to consider whether misogyny and ageism should be added to the list of categories that constitute a hate crime….”

  28. France Could See Record Asylum Claims, Three-Quarters of Migrants Likely to Stay (breitbart, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2018/10/18/three-quarters-migrants-stay-france-country-record-asylum-claims-2018/

“Approximately three-quarters of the asylum seekers in France face little chance of deportation as the country is expected to have received a record number of asylum cases this year.

France could see as many as 130,000 asylum cases heard in 2018 according to new figures which would top last year’s record number of applications that stood at 100,000, Le Figaro reports.

Newly released French Senate reports have claimed that most asylum seekers, up to 75 percent, do not face deportation and it is almost certain they will stay in the country.

The new reports represent a massive challenge for incoming Interior Minister Christophe Castaner who was appointed earlier this week following the resignation of Gerard Collomb.

A number of illegal migrants coming into France have used French overseas territories like French Guiana in South America and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean as entry points to claim asylum.

Under the previous Interior Minister, the island archipelago of Mayotte was exempted from France’s birthright citizenship rules in order to help stem the flow of migrants.

The costs of asylum seekers to the French taxpayer is also a murky subject with no recent concrete figures being published by the government. In 2013, auditors accessed the cost of 66,000 migrant applications to be in the range of a billion euros.

The government is also seeing increased tensions over migration with its Italian neighbour following a quarrel on the subject between French President Emmanuel Macron and populist Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini who labelled the French leader a “hypocrite” on the subject.

Tensions between the two countries escalated even further this week when reports that French police had taken migrants across the border and dropped them off in an Italian town were confirmed by French authorities.

Despite calling the incident an honest mistake, Italian Interior Minister Salvini slammed the French saying: “What happened to Claviere is an unprecedented offence against our country.””

  29. Turkish restaurant set on fire in German city of Chemnitz (abcnews, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/turkish-restaurant-set-fire-german-city-chemnitz-58582017

“German police say unidentified assailants apparently started a fire at a Turkish restaurant in an eastern city that saw violent anti-migrant protests recently.

Saxony state police said residents were woken up by a loud bang at the restaurant in Chemnitz early Thursday, followed by smoke. They saw three people running away and getting in a car. The fire was quickly brought under control and no one was hurt.

A police statement said that “a xenophobic motive currently cannot be ruled out” but that they are investigating “in all directions.” They urged more witnesses to come forward.

Anti-foreigner violence erupted in Chemnitz after the killing of a German man in August in which migrants are suspects. A kosher restaurant was also attacked on the sidelines of one protest.”

  30. Critics slam Seoul for denying refugee status to Yemenis (abcnews, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/critics-slam-seoul-denying-refugee-status-yemenis-58579963

“South Korean progressives on Thursday accused the government of caving into xenophobic sentiment by rejecting a plea for refugee status by hundreds of asylum seekers from war-ravaged Yemen whose arrival on a resort island earlier this year triggered outrage.

Justice Party spokesman Choi Seok said South Korea was neglecting its responsibility as a member of the United Nations and letting public sentiment influence critical decisions on human rights.

“The Yemeni refugees have risked every danger to come to our country, just so that they could survive,” Choi said. “It’s no different from the people of our own country half a century ago, when they wandered around foreign countries as refugees through war and division. We should no longer ignore the voices of people who seek to live.”

South Korea’s Justice Ministry on Wednesday said it would not grant refugee status to nearly 400 Yemenis, instead saying it would issue one-year humanitarian stays to 339 of them. The ministry rejected stay permits for 34 asylum seekers, but said they could appeal, and postponed decisions for another 85 applicants, citing the need for further interviews.

The ministry previously granted temporary stays to 23 Yemenis.

The Yemenis arrived on the island of Jeju earlier this year, using an island tourist policy that allows foreigners visa-free entry for up to 30 days. Thrown off by the flood of arrivals, South Korea excluded Yemenis from the no-visa benefits in June and banned the asylum seekers from leaving the island.

Since then, there have been a series of protests in Jeju and in the capital, Seoul, in which demonstrators called for deportation of the asylum seekers, who are Muslims. Protesters accused the Yemenis of being “fake refugees” who would steal jobs and pose a threat to local safety.

Anti-immigrant groups were quick to condemn the decision to grant the Yemenis temporary stays.

“We denounce the Justice Ministry for giving up on the safety of our people, being deceived by the fake refugees and saying they don’t pose a terrorist threat,” said Lee Hyeon-yeong, who helped organize a rally Thursday in Seoul.

Other demonstrators held signs that read “Don’t Be Like Europe” and “This Isn’t Hate — We Want Safety.”

Though it was the recipient of large-scale international military and humanitarian interventions during the 1950-53 Korean War, South Korea has granted refugee status to only a fraction of asylum seekers since 1994, when it began accepting applications. South Korea’s culture greatly values ethnic homogeneity and people often guard fiercely against outsiders.

The Justice Ministry did not give a clear explanation of why the Yemeni applicants failed to meet its standards for refugee status.

An official from the Jeju Provincial Police Agency said Thursday that four of the Yemenis were be investigating on suspicions that they consumed khat, a mild narcotic that is legal in Yemen but not in South Korea. The police official, who didn’t want to be named, citing office rules, said that the four Yemenis were among the 34 who were refused temporary stay.

The Yemenis who received the stay permits will have to reapply after their one-year term expires if they want to remain in South Korea. The ministry said it could refuse to renew the permits if the situation in Yemen stabilizes and becomes safe for the asylum seekers to return home.

Those who were granted temporary stays are allowed to leave Jeju for the mainland but must report their whereabouts to the immigration authorities…”

  31. EU moves to tighten borders, boost Africa ties on migrants (abcnews, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/eu-leaders-plan-beef-borders-stop-flow-migrants-58579452

“European Union leaders agreed Thursday to push ahead with plans to boost cooperation with North African countries and beef up the bloc’s borders in an effort to stop migrants entering Europe.

A statement from their summit in Brussels emphasized the need to step up cooperation with countries that people leave and transit through to seek shelter or better lives in Europe.

They said that work with those countries on “investigating, apprehending and prosecuting smugglers and traffickers should be intensified.” They also called for a joint smuggling task force to be set up.

Well over 1 million migrants entered Europe in 2015, most of them Syrians and Iraqis fleeing conflict, but numbers have dropped significantly since the EU began outsourcing the challenge to Turkey.

Turkey has been offered at least 3 billion euros ($3.4 billion), ostensibly in Syrian refugee aid, to stop people leaving there for Europe, and the bloc wants to reproduce that model elsewhere.

The EU has had to look outside to solve the problem because reforms to its asylum system are blocked by the refusal of some countries to accept refugee quotas or to share the burden of hosting them in a fair way.

European countries in the Mediterranean like Greece, Italy and more recently Spain feel abandoned to manage the influx alone, and tensions over how best to handle migrant numbers — which pale in comparison to refugee arrivals in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan — have increasingly fueled support for far-right parties in Europe.

“We can’t just say that a country with a border on the sea is suddenly the only one responsible” for migrants, said Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. “The problem is European and the solution should be a European one as well.”

Amid the standoff over quotas, momentum is gathering for countries to pay more money — for example to countries like Greece and Italy, or fund development aid — instead of hosting refugees.

“We’re recommending that instead of mandatory quotas that we go the way of solidarity. This means that each country will provide a contribution where it is possible and where it makes sense,” said Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, whose country holds the EU’s rotating presidency until the end of the year.

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said such a shift might work.

“It’s possible, no refugees but more money,” he told reporters, adding that it must be substantial funds, “not nothing, not peanuts.”

“It’s better an agreement with a compromise than no agreement,” he added.

However, migration experts and nonprofits doubt whether any scheme would work without actually sharing out refugees.

As the EU looks abroad for a solution, Egypt has appeared a prime candidate for a new partnership. Kurz and European Council President Donald Tusk have held talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a top army general who took office in 2014. Both men praised him for stopping people from leaving its coast on their way to Europe. As a sweetener, EU leaders have to take part in an EU-Arab League summit in Egypt on Feb. 25.

The aim would be to get the Egyptian coast guard to patrol the waters off Libya — the main point for migrants leaving for Italy — and take any rescued people back to Africa.

In response to criticism that it’s neglecting migrants and their rights, the EU has said that it works closely with the U.N.’s refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration.

But both agencies underline that, even though numbers have dropped, more people are dying at sea than ever — more than 1,700 people so far this year — and that the migrant debate has become “dangerously toxic” in some parts of Europe.

“The current tenor of the political debate – painting a picture of Europe under siege – is not only unhelpful but completely out of touch with reality,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said in a joint statement. “We cannot forget that we are talking about human lives. Debate is welcome – scapegoating refugees and migrants for political gain is not.””

  32. Ex-Robber Who Posed With Macron in ‘Middle Finger’ Pic Arrested for Drugs (sputniknews, Oct 18, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201810181068995916-robber-macron-photo-arrested-drugs/

“In late September, French President Emmanuel Macron drew the public’s ire after posing for a picture with two shirtless residents of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin.

A number of French media outlets have reported that the bandanna-wearing man posing for a now infamous photo with Emmanuel Macron during his four-day tour of Saint Martin in late September, Reault F., was sentenced to eight months in prison, including a four-month suspended sentence for possession of drugs and resisting arrest on October 18.

Even though the ex-convict publicly vowed to the French president to stop his “foolishness” after Emmanuel Macron made him promise to never commit robbery again, he was arrested just days later.

The French president visited Saint Martin to inspect the reconstruction work after the island was hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria last year. While talking to local residents, he was pictured alongside two shitless men, one of whom flipped the bird at the cameras, which led to much criticism online, with some suggesting that Macron was unfit for office.”

The stolen data, according to the researchers, contains details such as full name, phone numbers, physical addresses, voting history and other voting-related information.

The peddled data comes from 19 states.

ZDNet pointed out that some states consider the data public and allow it to be downloaded for free, but not all states have that policy.
