  1. Russia condemned for calling Syrian White Helmets a ‘threat’

Russia was denounced at the United Nations Thursday after describing the Syrian rescue volunteers known as the White Helmets as a “threat” and demanding their removal from the war-torn country, diplomats said.

“(The) presence of White Helmets is a source of threat,” the Russian representative said in a closed meeting of the UN Security Council called by Moscow, according to a diplomat present at the talks.

“We call on western countries to move the White Helmets from Syria. Terrorists should be removed. (It’s) not a good idea to have them in civilized society,” the diplomat quoted the Russian envoy as saying.

Moscow’s representative specifically highlighted their presence in Idlib, Syria’s last major rebel stronghold, according to another diplomat speaking anonymously.

Founded in 2013, the Syria Civil Defense, or White Helmets, saves those wounded in attacks on rebel zones.

Russia does not consider members present in Syria’s rebel areas to be rescue workers and has already accused them several times in the past of being linked to terror groups.

According to several diplomatic sources, the United States, Britain and France reacted with fury and dismay.

The US condemned the “outrageous and false accusations of Russia. The White Helmets are a humanitarian organization. Russia continues to spread false information,” according to the sources.

Britain meanwhile called on the Russians to “stop wasting the council’s time” while France said it was “surprised and dismayed,” adding that the group has “saved hundreds of people.”

Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have retaken large parts of Syria from opposition fighters and jihadists since Russia intervened in September 2015.

Moscow’s demands to the Security Council came as a planned buffer zone in northwest Syria was cleared of heavy armaments and a new deadline loomed for the tougher task of Turkey convincing jihadists to pull out.

The demilitarized zone ringing the Idlib region is the result of a deal reached last month between rebel backer Turkey and government ally Russia to stave off a regime assault on the rebel bastion.

    • Of course the “white helmets” are a menace: first cousins to ISIS! And be very suspicious of those who attack Russia… Or rather continue to do so. And its not “naivetey” on their part, nor was Merkel or any one of her ilk EVER naive! Hi Martin… Give my regards to all the “oldtimers”

    • ‘Half of those evacuated by White Helmets are Nusra terrorists’ – British journalist

The controversial, self-styled Syrian rescue group, the White Helmets, drew focus at a closed United Nations meeting on Thursday. Diplomats are said to be divided over the group’s possible removal from post-war Syria. An associate editor from the news site 21stcenturywire.com visited the group’s headquarters in Syria.

    • Bearded guys in Idlib are extremists, but should be talked to – UN Syria adviser

The ceasefire in Syria’s last rebel stronghold is taking root – does that mean that the end of civilian suffering in Syria is finally in sight?

  2. Turkey Tells US They Have Video That Proves Jamal Khashoggi Was Killed – Report (sputniknews, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201810121068815849-jamal-khashoggi-killed-video-turkey/

“The Turkish government has informed US officials it has audio and video recordings that prove that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside Saudi Consulate in Instanbul, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The video and audio recording reportedly show that Saudi Consulate security team detained Jamal Khashoggi after he entered the building on October 2 to obtain some documents for his upcoming wedding, and then killed him and dismembered his body.

According to US and Turkish officials cited by the Washington Post, the audio recordings in particular provide “persuasive and gruesome” evidence that the Saudi security is responsible for the journalist’s death.

“The voice recording from inside the embassy lays out what happened to Jamal after he entered,” said one source with knowledge of the recording.

“You can hear his voice and the voices of men speaking Arabic,” the source added. “You can hear how he was interrogated, tortured and then murdered.”

The other person quoted by Washington Post says the recording proves Khashoggi was beaten by the Saudis.

The existence of these recordings explain why Turkish officials were so fast to accuse Saudis of killing the journalists, the newspaper reads. However, Ankara is reluctant to release these recordings as it would reveal the ways Turkish intelligence spies upon foreign nations on its soil, the source said.

Jamal Khashoggi, a contributor to the Washington Post, known for his criticism of Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohhamad, has been missing since October 2 after allegedly visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to acquire documentation for his upcoming marriage. The Saudis denied allegations that the journalist has been captured or murdered and insisted he left the building later the same day.

In the meantime, media companies are pulling out of Saudi investment conference over the growing outrage of Khashoggi disappearance, Reuters reported Thursday. Journalists and executives of various major media companies, including New York Times, CNBC, Economist and Viacom have already announced their decision not to attend the event. The Financial Times reportedly announced it is reviewing its involvement as a media partner.”

    • It’s still Turk police, global MB-friendly media pushing this story. Mighty convenient for the Turk, who’s in a very bad place right now.

Rumor has it that he’s about to release the American pastor to look like the accommodating ally to PT. Everybody’s hot to drive a wedge between us and the Saudis. I hope we don’t get sucked in, but I’m not confident.

I also hope MbS hasn’t done anything stupid.

      • I also hope MbS hasn’t done anything stupid.

Ya mean like building a Cult of Personality™ instead of concerning himself with ecktual leadership?

      • I hope the pastor is released and sent home.

Yes they are trying to drive a wedge between us and the Saudi’s, it will take more then the release of one person from prison to do this but it might open a crack or two.

      • You are worried about the dwarf saudi King? He is a filthy muslim. What part of filthy muslim did you miss?

          • What part of fighting Iran did you forget.

            Touché, Richard.

Turkey’s transparent attempt at driving a wedge in between the USA and KSA would be meaningful if Erdogan wasn’t a shameless MB cheerleader. Nevertheless, he is (in spades) and it turns any prospect of him becoming a useful ally into comedy gold.

  3. My instincts say the frenzy over the missing Saudi journalist is intended to ignite Arab Spring-2. It’s stacking up.
Here’s a look at his background going back to 1988, Wikileaks.

THE KHASHOGGI FILES: AS CASE BUILDS AGAINST RIYADH, WHAT THE WIKILEAKS FILES TELL US ABOUT HISTORY AND KINGDOM

    https://sethfrantzman.com/2018/10/11/the-khashoggi-files-as-case-builds-against-riyadh-what-the-wikileaks-files-tell-us-about-history-and-kingdom/

(The author, Seth Frantzman, has gone somewhat native from years spent in Iraq, Syria, the Sinai, & misc. Ay-rab hellholes. He’s fraternized with tribal tards, cares deeply about them.)

    • That sounds about right, the MB has been loosing power and if their branch of the Saudi Royal Family seize power things will get interesting.

      • We can’t let that happen.

This is an operation that has many moving parts. What we’re watching is significant only superficially, to drive a political narrative. On that score we’ve blundered, and the enemy has stolen a march. Again, it’s only cover. The danger would be to allow artificially generated noise to sabotage us where it counts.

The KSA is corrupt, a mafia state that has disappeared its embarrassing, high-profile citizens for years. This is not new.

        So what?

Nations have interests, not BFF. “Special relationships” are somewhat tribal: the Anglo-sphere, Judeo-Christian affinities to Israel. And they’re subject to change as our identities diverge. For the rest, it’s realpolitik.

The PR puffery around MbS was transparent, obviously manufactured for Western consumption. It was a naive mistake: to retail a fake image guaranteed to self-destruct on close inspection.

Better to have left our relationship with the Kingdom low-key, a long-standing alliance in a rough neighborhood. Sloppy wet-work is trivial. Hold the regime accountable for its role in 9/11, now that would be something.

Routine thuggery has given the Turk the best pretext in the entire world to stage a comeback as Sultan, Arab Spring-2. He’s got more journalists in jail than any other leader in the world. The hypocrisy, the cynicism here is stupendous.

        It’s an unbelievable MB opportunity.
Just when the Turk is losing his grip at home and in Idlib, when Qatar is most isolated, when Iran is facing SWIFT sanctions Nov. 4, when Manbij [the east bank of the Euphrates, Kurdish Syria] is next on the docket…

        …you’ve got a WaPo [CIA/MB/Brennan] martyr.
Who doesn't pass the sniff test, if you look closely.

…Al Jazeera goes into overdrive, along with the entire cast of characters familiar from scenes at Tahrir Sq.

        ……
        Shabbat Shalom~

        • Routine thuggery has given the Turk the best pretext in the entire world to stage a comeback as Sultan, Arab Spring-2. He’s got more journalists in jail than any other leader in the world. The hypocrisy, the cynicism here is stupendous.

Erdogan is counting on the Propaganda Media to attack Saudi because they are semi allied to Trump, given the number of reporters and leftists that are on the Saudi payroll this probably won’t work as well as he would like but it is opening a few cracks.

        • Who doesn’t pass the sniff test, if you look closely.

Well, there’s this one guy in the Bible and, sheesh, it’s like he can’t do anything wrong.

  4. Pak Cuts Chinese ‘Silk Road’ Rail Project By $2 Billion Over Debt Worries

LAHORE: Islamabad has cut the size of the biggest Chinese “Silk Road” project in Pakistan by $2 billion, railways minister Sheikh Rasheed said today, citing government concerns about the country’s debt levels.

The megaproject to revamp the colonial-era line stretching 1,872 km from Karachi to the northwestern city of Peshawar was initially priced at $8.2 billion, but wrangling over costs has led to delays.

The changes are part of Islamabad’s efforts to rethink key Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects in Pakistan, where Beijing has pledged about $60 billion in financing but the new government of populist Prime Minister Imran Khan appears to be more cautious about the Chinese investment.

One of Africa’s poorest countries has pulled the plug on a $400 million China-funded airport

Sierra Leone’s decision to cancel the project tails earlier warnings by the World Bank that the airport loan would increase its debt burden. It also comes at a time when China’s so called “debt-trap diplomacy” in Africa is increasingly under scrutiny. In March, Rex Tillerson, former US secretary of state, criticized China’s economic model in Africa saying it “endangers Africa’s natural resources and its long-term economic political stability.”

It’s a sentiment China has been keen to rail against. During the FOCAC summit last month—while pledging an additional $60 billion funding to African nations—president Xi Jinping claimed China’s “win-win” co-operation policy with Africa ”follows the principle of giving more and taking less, giving before taking and giving without asking for return.”

But platitudes aside, data shows China’s millions might leave some African nations in the red. For instance, China accounts for about 70% of Kenya’s bilateral debt after increased borrowing and Zambia’s government has been forced to deny reports China could take over its national electricity company if it defaults on its mounting loans.

NR: Is it yust me or is anyone else sensing a pattern here?

    • I see a pattern who what I don’t see is who is behind it, is it Trump or Putin? Neither wants China to be too powerful.

      • … what I don’t see is who is behind it, is it Trump or Putin?

I’d have to bet on Putin. Historically, the USSR (and now Russia) have had far greater influence over both Pakistan and sundry sub-Saharan African nations (not to mention North African countries as well)..

Trump himself, along with his cabinet, just doesn’t strike me as having the in-depth experience in either locale to pull off this sort of diplomatic sleight-of-hand.

That said, Trump may be dangling all future military aid as a condition of Pakistan backing slowly away from Beijing’s economic siren song.

  5. World War 3: Taiwan vows to NEVER SURRENDER to China as tensions reach DANGEROUS new level

    [00:03:21]

    • The more money China spends on failed attempts to gain control of other nations the more tempting a target Taiwan becomes, I hope China doesn’t forget what chemical explosive warheads will do to the Three Gorges Damn.

      • I hope China doesn’t forget what chemical explosive warheads will do to the Three Gorges Damn.

I sincerely doubt that they have. It’s a major reason why all this Chicom belligerence amounts to so much saber-rattling (and not much else). One look at how advanced Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing (e.g., TSMC) has become is a solid indicator of—as Richard is so fond of pointing out about the USA—how Communist China needs Taiwan a lot more than Taiwan needs Communist China.

Sadly, Taiwanese greed has seen Taipei permit the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing capacity to the Mainland. This is taking Red China up the high tech learning curve a bit faster than they might otherwise have been able to achieve.

While in Taiwan, I discussed this problem with the locals and a constant theme was, “Feeding the tiger with your own flesh”. That’s pretty much self-explanatory.

As I mentioned before, Beijing has made yust enough progress to where the commie Mandarins now have too much to lose.

This “progress factor” may well be one of the only substantial benefits of allowing Red China accession to the WTO. Regardless, it’s long overdue to crash the Communist Chinese economy. From all indications, businessman Trump has a vivid understanding of this equation.

        • To me it looks like he is maneuvering to delay the crash while strengthening the US economy, this will help us and make China’s crash much worse.

          • To me it looks like he is maneuvering to delay the crash while strengthening the US economy, this will help us and make China’s crash much worse.

I could not agree with you more, Richard. America is supremely fortunate to have a businessman like Trump at the helm. This nation was at the very brink of forever losing its manufacturing capacity before his election.

Factories can remain shuttered only for so long before—with the exception of Detroit—they are repurposed or demolished for alternative uses (e.g., malls, artist lofts, condos, etc.).

Once torn down, they are rarely, if ever, rebuilt as the land they are situated on usually is now too close to (or directly amidst) metropolitan centers where mass transit once could convey laborers to their day jobs.

The USA should thank its stars that Trump seems to understand this manufacturing calculus. His employment renaissance is a vital first step towards immunizing America from the backwash of Communist China’s impending Perfect Storm™.

Between the largest economic and real estate bubbles in human history, along with devastating ground water pollution (i.e., +90% is nonpotable), the world’s very worst gender imbalance, continued pervasive hyper-corruption, large-scale desertification (i.e., 1,442 square miles of arable land lost annually), flagrant currency manipulation, institutionalized intellectual property theft (which kills all innovation), and a host of other socioeconomic ailments, all it will take is the tiniest of nudges to send Red China whirling into the death spiral it has worked so hard to deserve.

Sidestepping the storm surge of this catastrophic multidimensional tsunami will be one of the most adroit maneuvers anyone could hope for from Trump. To date, he has thankfully shown every indication of having this within his power.

P’raps this is what has the Left so antsy. Venezuela can be ignored—which the MSM is sweating bullets in order to do. The collapse of Communist China will put the unignorable lie to Socialism, along with Mao’s stinking “Little Red Book” and all points in between.

For Liberals, Red China’s implosion will be a “trout in the milk pail”—difficult to ignore and even more difficult to explain. If you thought the massive overreaction to Hillary’s defeat was spectacular, yust wait for the torrent of excuses that will be vomited forth by Socialist enablers around the globe when Beijing finally sits on it and spins.

            • I hope the crash doesn’t occur until after the 2020 election, that will give Trump 4 years to pull the US out of the mess and making it easier for Pence to be elected.

Given the way the Dems are tying their party to the socialist/Marxist wagon China’s collapse will spell the death knell for the Dems. It will also cause may of the Propaganda Media outlets to end up closing.

The world is in for a massive lurch towards freedom, a lurch that will be very violent in most parts of the world. Europe and Africa will be especially bad and the Middle East being worse the Europe and Africa.

  6. South Korea Backtracks on Easing Sanctions After Trump Comment

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea moved to patch up an emerging diplomatic row with the United States on Thursday, disowning any plan to lift sanctions against North Korea after President Trump’s blunt remark that Seoul could “do nothing” without Washington’s “approval.”

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of South Korea said on Wednesday that government agencies were discussing lifting a broad trade and investment embargo that Seoul imposed on the North in 2010, a statement that came despite Washington’s efforts to keep the economic noose on Pyongyang until it denuclearizes.

The minister’s comment alarmed conservative South Koreans, who accused the government of undermining their country’s alliance with the United States, which has led the effort to impose United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

Ms. Kang’s remarks also risked antagonizing the Trump administration, which considers the sanctions its most potent leverage against the North. South Korea’s indication that it might break ranks came just as Washington was criticizing Beijing and Moscow for undermining sanctions enforcement.

NR: Looks like Seoul finally got the memo.

  7. Unwanted Airbus A380s Are Starting to Be Stripped for Parts

The gargantuan, double-decker, four-engine Airbus A380 is a titan of the skies, but that doesn’t mean that airlines actually want to fly it. Reuters reports that two of the enormous craft, which only entered service about ten years ago, are about to be stripped for parts.

The two planes in question were operated by Singapore Airlines, which put the first Airbus A380 into operation in October of 2007. When Singapore Airlines decided to retire them before the end of their useful life, no other airlines showed considerable interest in buying the second-hand planes. So instead of flying again, the duo will be stripped of components like electronics and landing gear, although the German investment group that currently owns the planes will stop short of fully scrapping the airframes.

This move comes as part of an industry-wide shift away from enormous planes that allow airlines to focus on a “hub and spokes” model of organization, with planes like the A380 servicing central airports specially outfitted to accommodate its size. Instead, increasingly efficient twin-engine jets like Boeing’s 737 MAX are allowing airlines to shy away from connecting flights and run longer, lower demand, non-stop flights profitably.

NR: I saw one of these winged behemoths at LAX and it was dumbfounding to keep approaching it for several minutes without seeming to get much closer. You could almost see the time-space gravitational distortion waves shimmering off of it.

Anyhoo, let’s face it, when the EU screws the pooch they don’t spare any expense. There are few bigger blunders one can make than devoting €25 billion ($28 billion) to the development and build of this flying white elephant. The folks at Boeing must be laughing up their sleeves.

  8. Equality of Outcome

“Bosses will be made to reveal salary differences between their white and ethnic minority staff.

The radical plans to tackle racial inequality mirror rules introduced earlier this year to expose the gender pay gap.

More than 10,000 companies employing over 250 staff would have to publish the figures annually.

Around 10million workers would be covered. Theresa May, who will unveil the plans today, said: ‘Too often ethnic minority employees feel they’re hitting a brick wall when it comes to career progression”
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6262683/White-ethnic-minority-salary-gaps-10-000-companies-published-annually.html

Class Envy. The Marxists could not be prouder of Theresa May. Equality of Outcome. Why should Whites bother to achieve? Every advance they make a Preferential Group then claims their fair equal share. The elite on the bell-curve especially the Jews, will find they cannot be afforded as every non-white must be paid the same.

    Is it coz I’z Black
That you deny me my existence
    Then blackness shall be that
    Affirmative Resistance.
    And because of my vagina
    Freedoms stole away
    Always a reminder
Of the days we couldn’t say.
    Anger needs a light
    To justify its rage
    White men are the blight
To be taken from this Age.

  9. More than any other identity group, radical lesbians are out to destroy Western civilization beginning with white men of every age. There hatred for men and any woman who supports them, knows no bounds. In their own way they are worse than the Islamic Jihadists and they should be dealt with accordingly for their hate crimes.

    • Is Trump Planning a Summit Between Israel and the Palestinians?

If he is, it only can be with full awareness of yust how purposeless such an empty gesture must be. Unless his secretary of foreign affairs is totally braindead, everyone involved cannot possibly be unaware of how the “Palestinians”—regardless of what people in Gaza or the West Bank desire—will never accept a lasting, much less permanent peace agreement no matter how many accords are inked, be they minted in Oslo or Camp David.

Any genuine peace treaty would be a frank admission that jihad does not work. At the very least, it would represent an intolerable degree of humiliation which, in Arab cultures, is far worse than death.

See Sarah Rosenberg’s superb essay, “Face | Beyond Intractability“. This is easily the finest analysis I’ve ever seen of high context (e.g., Muslim, Asian, etc.) versus low context (almost all Western countries) cultures and the crucial role that context plays in daily life and diplomacy.

You could not hope for a more explanatory guide to why—taqiyya aside, which remains a total impossibility—all “negotiations” with Muslims are perpetually foredoomed to failure, and intentionally so by Islamic standards. Although a bit lengthy, anyone who reads the entire piece will come away with an unexpectedly deep appreciation for the insurmountable obstacles which confront Israel and any outsiders that delude themselves into thinking there is some sort of viable and lasting arrangement that can be made to calm these assuredly incessant hostilities.

For a solid analysis of exactly why this is such an impossibility, please review the very short article, ‘Hudna:’ Neither a truce nor cease fire, by David Bedin. It makes explicitly clear how idiotically futile it is to hold the even the faintest glimmer of hope for any realistic Arab–Israeli peace. An excerpt:

Here, then, are the four terms now in use:

      • Hudna: a tactical pause intended only for rearmament,

      • Tahida: a temporary halt in hostile activity which can be violated at any time

      • Hudaybiyyah: No fighting for 10 years: invoking after the “treaty of Hudaybiyyah” in 628 AD

      • Sulch: a total cessation of hostile activity

The reality is that a hudna, tahida or hudaybiyyah do not compare to the mu’ahada treaty of peace that Egypt signed with Israel in 1979, or the mu’ahada treaty of peace that Jordan signed with Israel in 1994.

The authoritative Islamic Encyclopedia (London, 1922) defines “hudna” as a “temporary treaty” which can be approved or abrogated by Islamic religious leaders, depending on whether or not it serves the interests of Islam, and that a “hudna” cannot last for more than 10 years.

As can be seen, all Islamic “pacts” are dedicated solely to giving Muslims sufficient breathing room to rearm and recruit for further hostilities. Sulch is entirely outside the realm of possiblities for reasons already stated. However glum this may sound, I strongly doubt that Trump’s undersecretaries have much in the way of understanding on these topics.

    • Twitter, Facebook, Netflix Imploding – Stocks Down 30 – 40 %

To paraphrase dear Yucki, “Boo-fecking-hoo!” It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

    • It is ever-so-tempting to accuse these various tech titans of making a fundamental and stupendously egregious business error. That is, presuming their products have an infinite market. While it is difficult to imagine that their collective marketing departments could be so unbelievably moronic, all signs point towards this exact blunder.

How else to explain the conspicuous lack of contingency planning on display as these once seemingly unstoppable digital juggernauts pull to the side with smoking gearboxes? Any company going through a financial freefall of this magnitude usually has pre-canned media kits and press releases specifically designed to mollify consumers and soothe rattled investor nerves.

The absence of such everyday commercial measures is symptomatic of the stunning arrogance and overall impudence on routine display by these haughty, self-appointed arbiters of whatever eventually reaches the online community.

I’m not even a fan of Alex Jones, yet his deplatforming by YouTube is so transparently partisan and generally repugnant that it’s difficult not to applaud the sharp decline in Google’s stock value. The same goes for Twitter and Facebook.

Netflix is a horse of another color. In 2015 financial analysts estimated that the programming of this Internet streamer approaches 37% of all primetime bandwidth. An excerpt:

Subscription-video leader accounts for more usage than YouTube, Amazon and Hulu combined in North America during primetime, according to Sandvine

Small wonder that Netflix is so vehement about net-neutrality.

      • Don’t forget the Tech Giants have been purging their employee rolls of anyone that doesn’t follow the party line, this discourages independent thought and creates a very arrogant group think that leans towards the idea that the boss is so smart nothing bad can ever happen.

  10. Pres. Trump Addresses Threat Of Human Trafficking

President Trump delivers remarks on his administration’s fight to end human trafficking.

The president thanked the various agencies for their efforts to address the issue, while speaking from the White House Thursday.

He discussed the progress since he took office, which includes a record number of human smugglers prosecuted last year.

However, the president added there is still more to be done.

“This is an urgent humanitarian issue,” said the president. My administration is committed to leveraging every resource we have to confront this threat, to support the victims and survivors, and to hold traffickers accountable for their heinous crimes. ”

President Trump went on to say his administration is challenging foreign regimes, which tend to support the illicit human trade.

    gynepunk:
    http://www.makery.info/en/2015/06/30/gynepunk-les-sorcieres-cyborg-de-la-gynecologie-diy/

The Catalan collective GynePunk wants to decolonize the female body. To this end, it is developing first aid gynecological tools, for socially disadvantaged women, refugees, sex workers. But also for themselves.

“How can we make more organically shaped sex toys, that are more educational?” Paula continues. “We also wanted to pursue the ideas of Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens, who advocate degenitalizing sexuality with their ecosexual movement.” Their movement is also part of the post-pornography movement, which is very strong in Spain and promotes a different vision of sexuality and mainstream pornography, which currently focus exclusively on genital sexual relationships.

GynePunk’s goal is to develop a tool kit for emergency gynecological medicine, something like risk-reduction kits for drug users. This kit can be helpful for immigrants without health coverage, for refugee camps, but also for sex workers, organized or not.

But the kit is also useful to the GynePunk members themselves. In Calafou there is a health group that seeks to bypass the public health system, in order to avoid doctor’s appointments without sufficient finances or the proper insurance. It’s also a militant stance for alternative medicine, ancestral knowledge, Chinese medicine, witchcraft and grandmother’s recipes… “We are cyborg witches!” says Paula. “We want to update ancestral knowledge with the independent use of technology.

  13. Exclusive: Five Eyes intelligence alliance builds coalition to counter China

BERLIN (Reuters) – The five nations in the world’s leading intelligence-sharing network have been exchanging classified information on China’s foreign activities with other like-minded countries since the start of the year, seven officials in four capitals said.

The increased cooperation by the Five Eyes alliance – grouping Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States – with countries such as Germany and Japan is a sign of a broadening international front against Chinese influence operations and investments.

Some of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, said the enhanced cooperation amounted to an informal expansion of the Five Eyes group on the specific issue of foreign interference.

While China has been the main focus, discussions have also touched on Russia, several said.

“Consultations with our allies, with like-minded partners, on how to respond to China’s assertive international strategy have been frequent and are gathering momentum,” a U.S. official told Reuters. “What might have started as ad hoc discussions are now leading to more detailed consultations on best practices and further opportunities for cooperation.”

  14. Japan’s Abe pursues China thaw as U.S-Beijing ties in deep freeze

TOKYO (Reuters) – While U.S. President Donald Trump appears to wage a trade “Cold War” on China, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will promote a thaw with Beijing at a summit this month where business ties will be in the spotlight.

A tough line on China helped Abe to regain office in 2012 during a row over tiny East China Sea isles that put ties in a deep chill. Now, Abe hopes to build on a rapprochement welcomed by Beijing, which is locked in an escalating trade war with Washington.

Japan shares U.S. concerns about Beijing’s maritime assertiveness and is extending its military reach to counter China. Japanese firms worry also about Chinese violations of intellectual property rights and technology theft.

Still, business ties with China, the world’s second largest economy, are vital for Japan.

“To ensure that Japan has sustainable economic growth, you cannot ignore economic relations with China,” said a Japanese foreign ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Abe has met Chinese President Xi Jinping many times since their first chilly conversation in 2014 on the sidelines of an Asia leaders’ summit in Beijing.

  15. ‘Islam Belongs to Merkel, But She Doesn’t Belong to Germany’ – AfD MP (sputniknews, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201810121068830866-islam-merkel-germany/

“Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party known for its tough stance on immigration, has been calling for an end to the country’s open-door policy since its inception in 2015. Its latest attempt to stop migrant-related crime follows the notorious murder of a German citizen in Chemnitz, allegedly by two Iraqi and Syrian migrants.

A representative of the AfD party in the German Bundestag, Gottfried Curio, has presented a request to the government asking that dissemination be restricted for certain Koranic passages that allegedly allow crimes such as honor killing, forced marriage and physical abuse of women. Curio believes that Islam’s key religious book “ideologically legitimizes committing crimes” in its text.

The German lawmaker brought up several quotes from the Koran to prove his point:

“Women are a field for you. Go to them whenever you want […] Allah has cursed the unbelievers and prepared the fire for them to burn […] The unbelievers are the worst of all creatures, worse than cattle.”

Based on this, the AfD has requested that the government ban certain provisions of the religious book, claiming that Islam and Sharia are incompatible with the rule of law. Curio claimed that the party’s demands do not contradict the German constitution’s provision protecting freedom of religion, as that freedom is not an excuse for violating the law with “polygamy, child and forced marriages, honor killings and beheadings.”

At the end of his speech, Curio took on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, claiming that she was responsible for the rise in religion-related crimes in the country.

“Daily knife attacks, nightmares for women and Jews, bullying of German students, increasing no-go areas — these things didn’t exist prior to Merkel. If Merkel believes that Islam is a part of Germany, then we say: Islam belongs to Merkel, but Merkel no longer belongs to Germany,” he said.

Alternative for Germany is a right-wing party that has been opposing Angela Merkel’s open door policy, which enabled a major migrant influx from the Middle East, beginning in 2015. The AfD believes that unregistered migrants are behind the increasing levels of crime in German cities. The party supported the anti-migrant protests that took place in Chemnitz in August-September 2018, following the murder of a local carpenter, allegedly by two migrants.

    Reaction to AfD Request

Other Bundestag parties did not take the AfD’s suggestion well. CDU politician Patrick Sensburg criticized Curio’s request as “sloppy and inaccurate.” Sensburg noted that the AfD politician didn’t take into consideration that Islam has different forms, but instead groundlessly generalized the religion.

“That would be like telling the AfD: You are all right-wing extremists. That’s not the case,” he added.

FDP politician Jürgen Martens noted that proving one’s point by using a 1,500-year-old book is not the best practice. He also recalled several quotes from the Bible, which, according to him, could also appear as calling for misconduct in modern society.

“Thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will bring misfortune in your own house, and will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor […] If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death,” the lawmaker cited.

A representative of the Left Party in the Bundestag, Friedrich Straetmanns, recalled that over the past 20 years, numerous unconstitutional Muslim groups had been uncovered and dissolved successfully using the existing legislation. He also blasted the AfD’s claims that their request is legitimate, reminding them that the fourth article of the German constitution declares that freedom of religion is an inalienable right.

Following an hour-long debate, the AfD’s request was redirected to the Bundestag’s Legal Committee for further examination. The right-wing party itself assured that it will continue to raise the issue of Islam in the Bundestag.”

  16. Poland, Hungary Veto EU Human Rights Report Which Ignores Christian and Jewish Persecution (breitbart, Oct 12,2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/12/poland-hungary-veto-eu-human-rights-report-ignores-christian-jewish-persecution/

“The European Union’s annual report on civil rights will not be officially adopted because it will be vetoed by member states Poland and Hungary, which complain that while it describes protecting LGBT people and immigrants, the growing persecution of Christians and Jews is not mentioned.

Poland was first to stand up against the document, with Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro announcing his nation would not ratify the report on Thursday. Because the update on the application of the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, published annually since 2010, has failed to be approved unanimously by all EU member states, the 2017 edition would not now be adopted at all.

Poland was subsequently joined by fellow central-European conservative nation Hungary in opposition to the document’s contents, which a Polish government source told wPolityce “is important, because it shows that we are not alone in the important matter of defending Christian rights in Europe and in the world”.

Leading Polish broadsheet Rzeczpospolita reports the reasoning of Justice Minister Ziobro on the decision to block the European Union report, when he explained that small acts of religious hatred, as having been visited upon Christians in Europe recently, can lead to greater acts.

Ziobro said: “It is the cause of physical attacks on those who bear symbols of faith, such as beating a year ago two Polish women returning from the Holy Mass in a church in Brussels or a resident of Berlin who had Christian crosses around his neck.

“It is the reason for attacks on religious objects, such as arson in July of a church in Orléans in France or throwing Molotov cocktails in a Swedish synagogue in Gothenburg.”

When Poland asked the European committee chairman to add religious groups to the rights report on an equal footing to “persons with different sexual orientations, children of immigrants, or women”, the EU body agreed to add Muslims, to which Poland is reported to have agreed to. When it was subsequently made clear that religious groups would be removed altogether, Poland objected.

Contrasting its own record to that of the broader European Union, the Justice ministry under Ziobro took the occasion of the Fundamental Rights report to note that Poland was one of the first European nations to give votes to women, and has never criminalised homosexuality.”

  17. Study: Italian Children Fleeing Heavily Migrant Populated Schools (breitbart, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/12/native-italian-children-fleeing-heavily-migrant-populated-schools/

“A study claims that schools in Milan with high proportions of migrant pupils are seeing “white flight”, while teachers beg the government to help with increasing numbers of children who do not speak Italian.

The study, entitled “White flight in Milan: The social and ethnic segregation in compulsory schools,” examined the major urban areas of Italy’s second largest city and found that up to 56 percent of Milanese families were enrolling their children into non-catchment area schools to avoid schools with high proportions of migrants, Il Giornale reports.

In primary schools overall, around 20 percent of the pupils come from foreign backgrounds but in some areas, the proportion is much higher like at the Damiano Chiesa primary school where foreign children make up 70 percent of the total number of pupils.

“The teaching staff is excellent,” a parent of one of the pupils at Damiano Chiesa said, but added: “But the high concentration rate of foreign pupils gives the school a bad reputation and therefore neighbourhood families do not register their children here.”

Teachers at the Milanese schools have also called out to the city’s Mayor Beppe Sala for help due to the fact that many migrant children do not speak Italian making it incredibly difficult to teach them.

The teachers, along with school administrators and parents, wrote a letter to the mayor saying: “Over the past five years, there has been a considerable increase in the concentration of children with non-native speakers and from other countries that do not understand and do not speak Italian.”

“The difficulty in communicating with parents and the lack of knowledge of the cultures of origin of the families by staff working in the Educational Services requires the presence of translators or cultural mediators,” they added.

Italy is not the only European country experiencing high percentages of foreign-born children in schools.

In Germany, reports have claimed that school standards have declined due to lack of integration of migrant children, while others have linked a rise in violence to schools with higher proportions of migrant pupils.”

  18. Marks and Spencer Criticised for Selling School Uniform Hijabs for Toddlers (breitbart, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/12/marks-spencer-criticised-selling-school-islamic-hijabs-toddlers/

“Marks and Spencer has been criticised for selling hijabs as part of its school uniform range, with anti-extremism campaigner Majid Nawaz condemning the leading British department store for “facilitating medievalism”.

The Islamic modesty garment can be found on the “essentials” section of school uniform pages, costing £6 and coming in both black and navy in sizes small to large — intended for school children from nursery, aged around three, to high school.

One London mother-of-three told Breitbart London that she was uncomfortable buying other uniform items from Marks and Spencer, her usual retailer of choice, while it sold the oppressive garment.

Former Islamist, Islamic reformer, and anti-extremism campaigner Majid Nawaz picked up on the item, images of which were making the rounds of social media, tweeting Wednesday: “Marks and Spencer facilitates medievalism by selling children’s hijabs in the school-wear category.

“It’s their right to choose profit over values. But it’s our right to shame them for doing so. Little girls are told it is ‘immodest’ to show their hair. And blessed be the fruit.

“To be clear, these are stocked for little girls as young as 3 years old.

“Hijab is still imposed (only on women) by law in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and many other countries. This is gender apartheid. Marks and Spencer are free to sell confederate flag tee-shirts too, but I bet they never will,” the LBC radio host added.

School uniforms are mostly mandatory across the whole United Kingdom, and though they vary in colour and style, generic items like blouses and skirts can be bought at department stores or on the high street.

When challenged by Mr Nawaz why they were facilitating medievalism and sexualising girls as young as three, a spokesman for the quintessentially British retailed tweeted: “We provide bespoke uniforms for 250 schools across the country and they tell us which items they need as part of their school uniform list. For a number of schools this year, they requested the option of the hijab.”…”

  19. Merkel’s Germany to Splurge Billions on Housing, ‘Integration’ for Migrants to 2022 (breitbart, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/12/merkels-germany-splurge-billions-housing-integration-migrants-2022/

“Angela Merkel will distribute €6.85 billion (£5.98 billion) to Germany’s regions to help pay for accommodation, social housing subsidies, and language classes for migrants, according to a Reuters source.

The Chancellor’s electoral power base has been eroded since her unilateral decision to invite migrants into Europe in 2015, resulting in an influx of over a million people from the Middle East, South Asia, and the Global South more generally.

Perhaps consequently, the Christian Social Union (CSU) — Bavarian sister party to her Christian Democratic Union (CDU)– is facing significant losses to the increasingly popular, anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) in regional elections this weekend.

The Reuters source claims that Merkel’s finance ministry has now agreed to distribute €500 million in migrant aid to Germany’s states to fund social housing subsidies, €1.8 billion for accommodation, and €2.44 for ‘integration’ programmes, such as language lessons for the so-called ‘New Germans’.

All in all, Reuters suggests that €15 billion will be funnelled into the country’s states and communes to support migrants through to 2022.

However, another Reuters report from as recently as May 2018 suggests total spending on “migrant-related issues” to 2022 will be an even more astronomical €78 billion, with the wire agency referring to a Der Spiegel report referencing another finance ministry draft document.

This report suggests social payments to migrants to 2022 will reach €21 billion, with spending on integration programmes including language lessons totalling €13 billion.

Germany allocated its entire national budget surplus to migrant crisis funding in 2016, a €6 billion spending spree.

Whether a spending spree on migrant integration of any description will boost the fortunes of Mrs Merkel’s allies remains to be seen, however, with polls suggesting the CSU will win no more than 35 percent of the vote this weekend.

This represents a dramatic fall from grace for the centre-right party, which since 1954 has never received less than 43 percent, and has been able to form a single-party government in the region after almost every election since 1966, with only a brief interlude from 2008 to 2013 when they were the senior partner in a coalition.”

  20. Court convicts American pastor, allows him to leave Turkey (abcnews, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/american-pastor-back-court-spying-terror-trial-58453248

“A Turkish court on Friday convicted an American pastor of terror charges but released him from house arrest and allowed him to leave Turkey, a move that’s likely to ease the tensions between Turkey and the United States.

The court near the western city of Izmir sentenced Andrew Brunson to 3 years, 1 month and 15 days in prison for the conviction, but since the evangelical pastor has already spent two years in detention he won’t serve more time.

The charge of espionage against him was dropped.

Brunson, whose detention sparked a diplomatic dispute between the two NATO allies, had rejected the espionage and terror-related charges and strongly maintained his innocence. The United States had repeatedly called for his release and in August slapped sanctions on Turkey.

Lawyer Ismail Cem Halavurt said Brunson, 50, was expected to leave Turkey for the United States.

The evangelical pastor had faced up to 35 years in jail if convicted of all the charges.

Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than two decades, was one of thousands caught up in a widespread government crackdown that followed a failed coup against the Turkish government in July 2016.

He was accused of committing crimes on behalf of terror groups and of alleged links to outlawed Kurdish militants and a network led by a U.S.-based Turkish cleric who is accused of orchestrating the coup attempt.

Brunson told the court he is “an innocent man. I love Jesus. I love Turkey.”

His trial came as Turkey and the United States are embroiled in another major diplomatic incident regarding a Saudi writer — U.S. resident Jamal Khashoggi — who disappeared at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week. Turkish officials claim the writer may have been killed inside the Saudi diplomatic mission. Saudi officials reject the claims as “baseless.”

Earlier, the court called two witnesses following tips from witness Levent Kalkan, who at the previous hearing had accused Brunson of aiding terror groups. The new witnesses did not confirm Kalkan’s accusations. Another witness for the prosecution said she did not know Brunson.

Brunson again denied accusations that his church aided Kurdish militants, saying he had handed over a list of Syrian refugees whom the congregation had helped and adding that Turkish authorities would have identified any terrorists.

“We helped everyone, Kurds, Arabs, without showing any discrimination,” he said.

The pastor, who is originally from Black Mountain, North Carolina, was imprisoned for nearly two years — detained in October 2016 and formally arrested in December that year — before being placed under house arrest on July 25 for health reasons.

The court’s decision at the time failed to improve tensions between the two NATO allies. Washington slapped sanctions on two Turkish officials and doubled tariff on Turkish steel and aluminum imports. Those moves in August, coupled with concerns over the government’s economic management, helped trigger a Turkish currency crisis.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had resisted U.S. demands for Brunson’s release, insisting that the courts are independent. But he had previously suggested a possible swap of Brunson and the Pennsylvania-resident Fethullah Gulen — the cleric accused of being behind the coup.

    Gulen has denied the claim.

Brunson led a small congregation in the Izmir Resurrection Church. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, with top representative Tony Perkins monitoring the trial, has listed him as a “prisoner of conscience.”

William Devlin, an evangelical pastor from New York spoke to reporters outside the Turkish prison, saying hundreds of thousands of Christians were praying for Brunson’s release.”

  21. Islamists rally in Pakistan for death sentence for Christian (abcnews, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/islamists-rally-pakistan-death-sentence-christian-58457202

“Hundreds of supporters from an extremist Islamist party have rallied in the eastern Pakistan city of Lahore to pressure judges to uphold a death sentence for a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy.

Asia Bibi has been on death row since 2010 after she was convicted of insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Chanting “Hang infidel Asia,” activists from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik party also rallied in other cities Friday, threatening nationwide protests if authorities free the woman.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court earlier this week postponed ruling on her final appeal and her lawyers are hopeful of an acquittal arguing she was falsely accused. That has angered Islamists who want her to be publicly hanged.

Bibi’s first appeal was dismissed by a Lahore High Court in 2014, but the Supreme Court stayed her execution in 2015.”

  22. Florida’s Sen. Bill Nelson steers would-be hurricane relief donors to Democratic bundling PAC
By LU Staff October 12, 2018

As the devastating storm surge of Hurricane Michael recedes, Florida’s U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is raising money. He’s raising it purportedly for relief to victims of the hurricane, the third strongest to hit the U.S. coast in recorded history. But as Cameron Cawthorne reports at the Washington Free Beacon, Nelson’s recent email encouraging donors to give to relief organizations ends up sending them to a Democratic bundling PAC called ActBlue.

Sen. Bill Nelson (D., Fla.) on Wednesday sent out an email encouraging people to donate money for hurricane disaster relief with a list of nonprofit groups that provide aid, but he did not disclose that the links for each group direct users to the website of ActBlue, an organization that helps Democrats raise money and saves donor emails for future fundraising efforts.

Cawthorne notes that Nelson does list organizations that provide actual aid (as opposed to advocacy), like the American Red Cross and the Florida Disaster Fund.

But Nelson doesn’t clarify that the ActBlue link offered for processing the donations is the link for a Democratic fundraising PAC, which makes money on every donation it processes, and uses that money to fund Democratic political activities.

Minister calls late-night stores mostly run by foreigners ‘meeting place for drug deals’

Italy’s far-right interior minister has come under fire for a proposal that would force what he calls “little ethnic shops” to close by 9pm.

Matteo Salvini added the measure to his immigrant-targeting security decree, arguing late-night grocery stores, mostly run by foreigners, are “a meeting place for drug deals and people who raise hell”.

He claimed the initiative was not specifically aimed at foreigners and was merely a way to “limit the abuses of certain shops”.[…]

  24. Scalise: When Dems Like Holder Call For Violence, That’s A ‘Threat To Our Democracy’

This summer, California Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters called on her supporters to harass cabinet officials. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that you “cannot be civil” with members of the Republican Party. And Wednesday, videotape was released of former Attorney General Eric Holder telling a Democratic audience at a campaign rally in Georgia on Sunday that they should “kick” Republicans when they perceive them as “going low.”

Despite the continued reports of politically motivated threats or violence, Democratic Party leaders have worked to keep this anger burning and incite even more harassment and violence.

Beginning with my own near-death experience at the hands of a deranged shooter who sought to assassinate a baseball field of Republicans, there is a growing list of violent or threatening actions taken against conservatives by Democrats.

  25. Spain: Islamic State Recruiting in Prisons

Spanish police have dismantled a jihadi network operating inside and across more than a dozen Spanish prisons. The network, allegedly linked to the Islamic State, was established and operated by one of the most implacable jihadis in the Spanish prison system — apparently under the noses of prison authorities.

The network’s existence has called into question not only the effectiveness of security procedures in Spanish prisons, but also of Spanish “deradicalization” programs, which are aimed at “rehabilitating” Islamic militants for eventual “reinsertion” into society.

The group’s core members included 25 jihadis in 17 different prisons (accounting for more than half of the 30 Spanish prisons equipped to house jihadi convicts), according to the Interior Ministry, which provided details of the counterterrorism operation on October 2.

The group — which the Interior Ministry described as a jihadi “Prisons Front” (“frente de cárceles”) — was engaged in recruiting, indoctrinating and radicalizing other inmates, as well as in plotting new jihadi attacks.

Vandals targeted the Metropolitan Republican Club in Manhattan on Thursday evening in an apparent politically-motivated intimidation campaign.
In exclusive statements to Breitbart News, officials with the Metropolitan Republican Club said
Antifa had been trying to shut down their event on Friday evening with conservative pundit Gavin McInnes.

According to one official, members of Antifa had harassed the online ticket vendor Eventbrite, which the GOP Metropolitan Club used to sell tickets for the McInnes event at their headquarters.

The official said Antifa had “desperately” been trying to get the Metropolitan Republican Club to cancel the McInnes speech. The group’s latest attempt came shut down the event involved vandalising the club’s 1930s, pre-war building and leaving a threatening letter, which Breitbart News has obtained.

  28. Teacher who recounted Trump aide eating glue as a child is suspended

A teacher who recounted how a senior aide to President Trump ate glue as a third-grader is in trouble with her employers.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has placed veteran teacher Nikki Fiske on “home assignment” while it decides what to do, if anything, about disclosures she made about a young Stephen Miller.

Miller, 33, has grown up to be a senior advisor to Trump. But his prospects did not appear so promising to Fiske when Miller was a student in her classroom at Franklin Elementary School.

“Do you remember that character in Peanuts, the one called Pig Pen, with the dust cloud and crumbs flying all around him? That was Stephen Miller at 8,” Fiske recounted in an article posted Wednesday by the Hollywood Reporter. “I was always trying to get him to clean up his desk — he always had stuff mashed up in there.”

And there was a problem with glue.

“He would pour the glue on his arm, let it dry, peel it off and then eat it,” she said. “He was a strange dude.”

The school district’s concern is “about her release of student information, including allegations that the release may not have complied with applicable laws and district policies,” said district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker.

“This has been picked up by other digital publications and blogs, and some issues have been raised,” Pinsker said.

The brief article is in the first-person voice of Fiske “as told to Benjamin Svetkey,” who is a senior editor at the publication.

Fiske’s disclosures have prompted angry responses.

“The real takeaway from this story is that Fiske sounds like a real piece of trash,” wrote Becket Adams in the Washington Examiner. “What kind of teacher goes to an entertainment newspaper with gossip about an 8-year-old boy? Hell, forget that she’s a teacher. What kind of human being does that?”

Fiske, 72, is a registered Democrat who, based on her Facebook account, supports causes associated with liberals and progressives, such as gun control and halting the killing of dogs for meat in China.

She could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

  29. Pence to Central America: Tell Your People If They Can’t Come to the U.S. Legally, ‘Don’t Come at All’
    By Melanie Arter | October 11, 2018 |

(CNSNews.com) – In a speech at the Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America, Vice President Mike Pence called on the leaders of Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador to tell their people that if they can’t enter the United States legally, don’t come at all.

“We also need all the nations in the region to reinforce a very simple message to your people, and it’s a message from the heart. That is, the leaders in this room and the governments that you represent should tell your people: ‘Don’t put your families at risk by taking the dangerous journey north to attempt to enter the United States illegally,’” Pence said.

“The truth is, your message can probably be summed up by telling them that if they can’t come to the United States legally, they should not come at all. And say it with strength and say it with compassion as neighbors as friends, cause it’s the truth,” the vice president said.

OTTAWA — Canada is contributing $50 million to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency — after the United States decided to stop funding what it called an “irredeemably flawed” organization.

The new Canadian funds announced today will be allocated over two years to assist the health and education efforts of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or UNRWA.

The Trump administration decided in August to withdraw US$300 million in support, ending the United States’ status as the largest donor for an organization that had been trying to help more than five million Palestinian refugees.

Israel has accused the agency of being biased, fuelling its conflict with the Palestinians and promoting hatred against the Jewish state.

Canada’s foreign ministry says the new funds will help bring stability to the region by helping Palestinians cope with poverty, unemployment and food insecurity.

But it also says the money will assist UNRWA with “its ongoing efforts to improve neutrality within the agency and its operations.”

“This assistance demonstrates how Canada and UNRWA are working together to ensure respect for the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, operational independence and impartiality,” said a statement from Global Affairs Canada.

Canada is earmarking $40 million towards the basic education, health and livelihood needs of millions of Palestinian refugees, especially women and children.

Another $10 million is aimed at helping 460,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria and Lebanon.

The new Canadian funds come two weeks after the European Union pledged an extra US$46 million to UNRWA to support its health and education services.

International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said Canada’s new contribution would improve lives and “protect the human dignity” of millions of Palestinian refugees.

“This new funding to UNRWA is urgently needed, and it will bring some predictability to the agency as the needs on the ground are increasing,” she said in a statement Friday.

Israel, meanwhile, has praised the U.S. decision to cut UNRWA funding, which the Trump administration said was an “irredeemably flawed” organization when it announced its decision at the end of August.

Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and his administration’s leading Mideast adviser, said in an internal email published by Foreign Policy magazine that the agency “perpetuates a status quo, is corrupt, inefficient and doesn’t help peace.”

Kushner also reportedly called for a “sincere effort to disrupt UNRWA” in the email.

Last month, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told the UN General Assembly that the agency does work that is critical to the well-being of his people, but the U.S. simply wants to “obliterate it altogether.”

  34. Outrage over Short Sentences for Migrants Who Gang Raped 13-Year-Old (breitbart, Oct 12, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/12/outrage-over-short-sentences-for-migrants-who-gang-raped-13-year-old/

“Weak punishments of as little as one year and eight months, suspended, for a migrant rape gang which targeted a 13-year-old girl have sparked outrage in Germany.

Eight migrants aged 14 to 17 and holding Bulgarian citizenship had sexually harassed the victim at a swimming pool in a Velbert, North Rhine-Westphalia, and dragged her into the woods as she was making her way home in the early evening, reports Der Spiegel.

Two of the six defendants — two more suspects will be tried separately after they have been extradited from Bulgaria, where they fled with their families after the attack — took turns raping the young teen while the others watched, at least one of them filming the assault on a mobile phone.

The migrants then brought her to a parking lot several hundred yards away, where the same two gang members raped her again, and then back to the woods — where, fortunately, they were interrupted by a walker who happened to be in the area.

The young girl was forced to testify at length in court as a result of one of the main defendants having “denied the act until the end and claimed that the sex was consensual”, according to a court spokesman — a claim dismissed as ridiculous by the judge.

“It’s absurd to imagine that a 13-year-old girl wants to voluntarily have sex with so many men,” they said.

Nevertheless, and despite the prosecutor having asked that the two rapists should receive sentences of seven years and five years and eight months — not very long in absolute terms, but severe by German standards — they were handed terms of only four years and nine months and four years.

One of their accomplices received just three years, while the remaining gang members were effectively allowed to walk free from court, with their sentences of two years and one year and eight months being suspended…”
