  2. BREAKING: Thousands Evacuated After Massive Explosion Rocks Ukrainian Ammunition Depot

A large fire at an ammunition depot in central Ukraine has triggered a series of massive explosions, prompting the evacuation of about 30,000 people. Hinting at sabotage, the country’s Prime Minister said “external factors” could be attributed to the blasts.

The explosions happened early Wednesday (local time) near the town of Kalynivka, which is situated 120 miles (190 km) from the capital, Kiev. During the night, a military base near the ammunition dump caught fire, causing officials to shut off the facility’s electricity and gas supply.

DRUZHBA, Ukraine (Reuters) – Ukrainian authorities suspect sabotage lay behind explosions that tore through an ammunition depot in the early hours of Tuesday, sending fireballs into the sky and causing more than 12,000 people to be evacuated.
No casualties were reported at the depot, located 176 km (about 110 miles) east of the capital, Kiev. Explosions were happening at a rate of two to three a second at one stage, according to the defense ministry.

Ukraine has in the past pointed the finger at Russia for such types of incidents as relations between the two countries have plunged following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and support for separatist forces in the Donbass region.

Without providing evidence, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister linked the explosions to a decision pending in Istanbul this week to allow Ukraine to establish an independent national church, which Russia fiercely opposes.

A Reuters witness later saw powerful explosions continuing at the depot. The blasts shattered windows in surrounding village houses while explosions could also be heard in a nearby wood where some ammunition appeared to have come down.

The fact that explosions were set off at intervals in different parts of the depot pointed to sabotage, a defense ministry’s spokesman said.
“Two simultaneous explosions, and after five minutes two more explosions (in another part of the depot) suggest it was military sabotage,” Defence Ministry spokesman Rodion Tymoshenko said at a press briefing.

Authorities closed airspace in a 30 km radius and suspended road and rail transport. The emergency services reported that gas and electricity supplies to the area had been disrupted.

“The rumble started at 3 a.m. It rumbled three times, then I woke up and ran to my family and started waking them up,” said Valentyna Petrenko, a resident in the nearby village of Druzhba.
“We crept into the basement. We took documents, papers, everything we could, blankets, pillows and stayed in the basement.”

Hundreds of people and equipment were deployed to the site, a statement by the emergency services said, joined by Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and the head of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Muzhenko. President Petro Poroshenko had called for a report.

Several large fires have hit ammunition and weapons depots in recent years, an additional drain on Ukraine’s military. Fighting between Ukrainian troops and Moscow-backed separatist rebels has killed more than 10,000 people since 2014.
Last year, massive explosions at a military depot in the Vynnytsya region, 270 km west of Kiev, forced the authorities to evacuate 24,000 people.

  3. Flea-borne typhus spreads across Los Angeles area

(CNN)A rise in typhus, a bacterial disease spread by lice or fleas, has hit the Los Angeles area, and public health officials are sounding the alarm.
As of Monday, there have been 57 cases of flea-borne typhus in Los Angeles County, the county Department of Public Health said.
On Thursday, the department announced that officials are investigating an outbreak of flea-borne typhus in downtown Los Angeles, and they are working with the city to implement environmental safety measures to help reduce the spread of the disease.

Between July and September, the county identified nine cases of flea-borne typhus associated with downtown Los Angeles, and six of those cases were in people experiencing homelessness, according to the county.

Kelley Paul, the wife of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), described her increasing concerns for the safety of herself and her family amidst increasing calls from Democrats and the broader left to amplify politically motivated hostility towards Republicans. She offered her remarks in a Friday interview with Breitbart News Deputy Political Director Amanda House.

“We’ve updated all of our security systems at home. I sleep with a loaded gun by my bed. I’m home alone a lot, obviously when Rand is [in Washington, DC], and so I’ve got deadbolts all around my house so that if someone’s in my house when I go to bed I’m deadbolted in three different levels,” Paul told House.

“It’s bizarre. I’ve never been like this in my whole life. … We used to never even lock our doors, and now that has all changed. Even going out to dinner in D.C., last night, you worry. You hope that people aren’t going to come up and just start screaming at you.”

  5. South Africa’s Zulu king, Afrikaans nationalists to form farming partnership

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa’s Zulu king and Afrikaans nationalist group AfriForum are forming a partnership to develop the agriculture on vast swathes of land the monarch controls through a trust, AfriForum’s CEO said on Tuesday.

The move comes as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) takes steps to change the constitution to expropriate land without compensation while also seeking to provide security of tenure to people living on royal tribal lands – policies opposed by AfriForum and the king.

“We are finalising a memorandum of understanding to make the agreement formal,” AfriForum Chief Executive Kallie Kriel told Reuters.

King Goodwill Zwelithini controls 2.8 million hectares, a fragmented sub-tropical area the size of Belgium, under an entity called the Ingonyama Trust.

“We have numerous members that have successful farms in the vicinity of the trust. The idea is to get a formula where there can be cooperation between our members and people living on the trust land to stimulate agricultural development,” Kriel said.

Much of the farming in those areas is focused on sugar, cattle, game and high-value fruit such as avocados. AfriForum is generally seen as a right-wing, nationalist group that has lobbied for support for “white rights” in the United States.

By Joe Newby October 9, 2018

On Monday, Minneapolis/St. Paul ABC affiliate KSTP reported that the FBI is looking into a threatening tweet posted on social media Saturday that advocates for the murder of newly confirmed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“So whose [sic] gonna take one for the team and kill Kavanaugh?” the tweet read. The threatening message was removed and we understand the Twitter account was deleted, but not before the tweet was captured for posterity:

  7. Portland Antifa takes over intersection; demonstrates why it’s a highly effective vote-getter for Trump

It’s not clear whether the Portland Antifa goons in these videos understand the effect they’re having. One has to suspect they don’t understand it, since they keep clarifying for more and more Americans why the safest thing to do is keep government out of the hands of the Left.

Portland-area activist Andy Ngo posted video clips on social media of an Antifa mob in Portland taking over an intersection and arbitrarily “directing” traffic, demanding that drivers obey their directions (e.g., assuming police-style traffic-direction stances and signaling “orders” to turn right instead of going straight, as some drivers wanted to do).

In one clip, it appears that Antifa thugs actually did damage to an elderly man’s car. In that case, he afterward made a quick right and sped up to get away from them, which enraged the mob. Several people pursued him at a run, and when he stopped down the block to try to look at the damage, they descended on him shouting, with some waving batons menacingly. As he got back in his car and drove away, the thugs continued to take whacks at the vehicle.

  9. Meals, school outings, boy-girl mix … In some schools in France, students reproduce a behavior called “communitarism”, adopted by their parents. And that worries the National Education.

Are the schools increasingly victims of community excesses? Europe 1 was able to see an ultra-confidential note of the intelligence services, received by the cabinet of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and Jean-Michel Blanquer, the Minister of Education, about the case reports Muslim communitarianism in schools.

    Sometimes there are extreme cases.
If the number of reported facts is stable, the reasons are more and more worrying. Some things are simply not feasible in all schools for religious reasons. The most striking example, the newest, mentioned in this note, is that of pupils who refuse to be in classes having red furniture, because it is considered “haram”, that is to say, prohibited by the Koran. This example happened in an establishment in the North of France.

The note mixes different types of cases, more or less worrying. According to it, some children refuse to draw human representations (a formal religious ban for many Muslims). Others cover their ears when music is played in class, and young boys refuse to give a hand to girls. On the other hand, younger and younger children practice Ramadan, and this can pose problems in the organization of the courses. In Troyes, 6th grade students refused to go to the pool with their class for fear of “drinking the water and breaking their fast”.

    Meals, moment of tension.
Many incidents are related to the issue of meals. In the Bouches-du-Rhône, some students refuse to eat alongside those who eat pork. In a college in Saint-Denis, during a school trip where they were preparing to serve chicken and fries at meal, an incident occurred. “Of about fifty students, 35 of them refused to eat the chicken leg that was offered to them at dinner, because it was not halal. We had not been warned, so we had to threw these 35 chicken legs and they only ate fries, “says Yannis Roeder, their history teacher.

More worrying, in Seine-et-Marne, Muslim students are also stigmatized by other Muslim students because they eat ordinary (non-halal) food in the canteen. Similarly, in the North Muslim students are insulted by other Muslim students when they eat products that are not halal.

Many reports tell for some families, it is inconceivable that their child will not eat halal, even for a week. In fact, in Haute-Savoie, some schools no longer organize winter trips, because it became “unmanageable”, according to them.

A few months ago, the National Education has set up a platform allowing a teacher who is facing a question related to religion to receive a response, support within 24 hours. It records about 30 reports a day.

The note consulted exclusively by Europe 1 is full of examples as eloquent as worrying. While national conclusions should not be drawn from them, they shed light on worrying situations at the local level……

  10. Judge brands Bangladeshi illegal immigrant ‘despicable, beyond contempt’ as he jails him for faking gay affair with dead Grenfell victim who died in fire so he could claim £5000 and be allowed to stay in UK (dailymail, Oct 9, 2018)

Bangladeshi Syed Rinku, 45, claimed he was in a relationship with a resident of the 20th floor of the west London block and his boyfriend had died in the blaze.

But when he was asked about his affair by the police, it became clear he had researched who had died in the fire. Officers then found heterosexual porn and dating apps on his phone.

Rinku was jailed for 18 months today after he admitted fraud at Isleworth Crown Court.

At least 14 people have now been charged or convicted of wrongly claiming money meant for victims of the disaster, which claimed 72 lives…”

  11. UK to block nine ISIS Britons from returning – including two jihadi ‘Beatles’ – after CPS officials said they feared they could NOT successfully prosecute them (dailymail, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6254659/UK-block-nine-ISIS-Britons-returning-including-two-jihadi-Beatles.html

“Ministers are refusing to let seven captured Islamic State fanatics back into the UK.

One is being held by a Free Syrian Army group on Syria’s border with Turkey and the rest are in the custody of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in eastern Syria.

British officials have refused to cooperate with the SDF on the issue of their return and have been in contact only with US agents who interrogated them.

Five of the suspects, including members of the execution gang known as The Beatles, have been publicly named.

But the identities of two others, as well as of two women and their children, are being protected.

Those named are: Alexanda Kotey, Shabazz Suleman, Jack Letts, Mohammed Anwar Miah and el Shafee Elsheikh.

One of the unidentified men is understood to have told the SDF he was a doctor and had been working as a medic in IS territory.

The other is a Londoner who dropped out of university to join the terror group, the Daily Telegraph reported.

All have British citizenship except Elsheikh and Kotey, who had theirs revoked.

The younger children were born in the so-called IS caliphate and would therefore be considered stateless.

Sajid Javid, meanwhile, was said yesterday to have dropped objections to the death penalty for Elsheikh and Kotey for fear of enraging Donald Trump.

The Home Secretary reversed the Government’s original stance after being warned it would ‘wind up’ the American President, a court was told.

Elsheikh and Kotey, who are accused of belonging to the four-man cell of executioners in Syria known as The Beatles, are at the centre of a row over whether they should be tried in Britain or potentially the US.

The case has been brought to the HighCourt by Elsheikh’s mother, Maha Elgizouli, who is asking judges to prevent the UK from sharing evidence under a ‘mutual legal assistance’ deal with US authorities unless they receive assurances that her son will not face the death penalty…”

“Washington’s sanctions against Tehran would fundamentally change other countries’ economic cooperation with the Islamic Republic, the Financial Times has written.

EU finance ministers will try to persuade the US administration not to disconnect Iran from the international payment system SWIFT, the newspaper reported on Tuesday.

SWIFT is a global financial messaging service that connects more than 11,000 banks in more than 200 countries.

“Our ask is: why bother ripping out all of the electrical cables from a building if you can switch off a light,” said a European diplomat who confirmed the planned meetings.“If you can designate a bank [for sanctions] then there’s no need to force Swift to disconnect from Iran,” he added.

According to the newspaper, this is the issue the EU finance ministers are going to bring up when they meet their US counterpart Steven Mnuchin at the annual IMF and World Bank gathering in Indonesia, scheduled to run until October 14…”

    • Trump Admin Under Pressure to Save Iranian Financial Access

An internal battle is being fought inside the Trump administration to save Iran’s access to international financial markets, providing Tehran with a critical lifeline ahead of the implementation of harsh new economic sanctions, according to multiple US officials who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

Top officials in the Trump administration’s Treasury Department—including some who hope to save the landmark nuclear agreement—are said to be pushing for Iran to remain connected to the SWIFT banking system, an international system that facilitates cross-border transactions.…

While President Trump and top White House national security officials such as John Bolton have made clear that SWIFT and European allies must end their business dealings with Iran, a cadre of Treasury Department officials are said to be standing firm against this effort, paving the way for an internal showdown ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline for new sanctions, SOURCES SAID.…

Some details of this internal battle were first reported by the Washington [com]Post ahead of the European visit. The Post identified Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as the Treasury official leading the battle to save Iran.…

“It’s basically up to the president at this point,” said the former official, who would only speak on background. “There’s a big push by SWIFT to get opinion leaders to side with Iran and Europe, but Trump knows how weak he will look if he doesn’t get them to disconnect. He can’t have a policy weaker than Barack Obama’s for crying out loud.”

  13. Global News -Exclusive: Canadian member of Islamic State caught, but RCMP struggle to lay charges against ISIS fighters

In an exclusive Global News series, Stewart Bell reports from Iraq and Syria on the aftermath of the war against the so-called Islamic State. In Part 1, Global looks at Canadian ISIS members who are being held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and the challenges Justin Trudeau’s government faces with Canadian members of the terror group.

A high-profile Canadian member of the so-called Islamic State has been caught while attempting to return to Canada, Global News has confirmed.

Muhammad Ali, 28, who left Toronto in 2014 to join ISIS, was captured by Kurdish forces as he tried to flee from Syria to Turkey.

Global News interviewed Ali at a makeshift prison where he is being held by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, the military alliance that controls northeast Syria.

The former Ryerson University student, who went by Abu Turaab Al-Kanadi, was taken into custody four months ago in Ras al-Ayn, on the Turkish border.

At the time, he was with his Canadian wife, former Vancouver resident Rida Jabbar, and their two children, both born in Syria.

His family is being detained at a camp not far from the prison where Kurdish, American and British officials have been interrogating Ali.

His capture is significant because, aside from serving as a sniper, Ali used social media to encourage others to join ISIS and conduct terrorist attacks.

Ali’s case has placed the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a difficult position. Kurdish officials want to hand Ali and a dozen other Canadians over to Ottawa.

However, with the RCMP struggling to bring charges against Canadians who have taken part in overseas terror groups, there is no guarantee Ali would face arrest upon his return.

Kurdish authorities said they were holding almost 900 foreign ISIS fighters, as well as 500 wives and more than 1,000 children, and want governments to take back those that are their citizens.

Abdulkarim Omar, co-chair of Foreign Affairs for the Democratic Self-Administration of North Syria told Global News in an interview in Qamlishi, a city in northern Syria that 10 Canadians are currently being held.

“So far we have three ISIS fighters, two women and five children. In total there are 10 Canadian citizens,” Omar said. “The fighters are in prisons and the women and children are in the camps.”

Those numbers do not include Ali’s family.

Omar said Kurdish officials met months ago with Canadian diplomats in northern Iraq.

“There was a dialogue with the Canadian government via the Canadian consulate in Beirut,” he said. “We had a meeting in Sulaymaniyah and there was some good steps and we filled application forms and then suddenly the Canadian government stopped this process and we don’t know why.”

Canada’s foreign affairs department would not say how many Canadians were in SDF custody. “Global Affairs Canada is aware that Canadian citizens are being detained in Syria,” a spokeswoman said.

The government “is engaged in these cases and is providing assistance, to the extent possible,” said spokesperson Amy Mills. “Given the unpredictable security situation, the government of Canada’s ability to provide consular assistance in all parts of Syria is severely limited.”

The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team has been investigating Ali but he has not been charged. Canadian officials have not spoken to him since he was apprehended.

According to ISIS documents smuggled out of the region, Ali joined the terror group on April 24, 2014. His ISIS membership form indicated he asked to serve as a fighter.

Once he had joined, he made no secret about it, posting on social media accounts that he was a “soldier” in ISIS. “Everyone will die eventually. It’s inevitable,” he wrote. “Best to go out fighting for what you believe in.”

His Ask.FM account encouraged others to join ISIS, gave advice on how to do it and told recruits to contact him once they arrived in Turkey.

One online message suggested he had helped a group of Canadians cross into Syria to join ISIS. The friends are all believed to be from the Toronto area.

“Analysts still trying to figure out what radicalizes us,” a post on his Twitter account read. “Read the Quran … and look at the dire situation in Muslim Lands.”

He spoke about playing soccer with severed heads, wrote that homosexuals “should be killed” and posted ISIS’s incitement lines, such as: “Kill the disbeliever whether he is civilian of military.”

Following the deadly October 2014 terror attacks that killed Canadian soldiers in Quebec and Ottawa, he wrote, “First Ottawa, then Quebec. Strike them, just as they strike your brothers and sisters.”

“If you are unable to make hijra [travel abroad], know that you have permission to strike them in their lands. Kill a kaffir [non-believer] and secure you [sic] place in Jannah [heaven],” another post read.

He had been absent from social media in recent years, feeding speculation he was dead. But he had only gone offline while continuing his involvement with ISIS.

University of Ottawa Professor Craig Forcese said some of his online posts could be considered participation in a terrorist group, counselling a criminal offence, hate speech and uttering threats.

“Everything turns on the quality of this information,” he said.

The Syrian Kurds who have pushed ISIS back and encircled its last stronghold said they lacked the capability to imprison, bring to justice and rehabilitate 2,000 foreign captives.

“This is a big burden on our shoulders and this is a big number of ISIL fighters and they pose a serious threat here so we cannot keep them here,” said Omar, the official with the Democratic Self-Administration of North Syria. He added that should the conflict flare in the region, the ISIS members might escape.

“This is a good chance for the international community because we have them in our custody. They should take on their moral responsibilities and address this issue,” he said.

“We have sacrificed a lot to be able to capture those dangerous and notorious criminals, 900 people, ISIL fighters, every country should assume their responsibilities and try to help us to address this issue and take their citizens back to their countries and try them in countries.”

The FBI recently brought a woman captured by Kurdish forces and her four children back to the U.S., and Russia and Sudan took back their nationals, Omar said. “But this is not enough, we need to find an overall solution.”

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) revealed that Turkish authorities arrested 140 of their members and local politicians last week in operations across several provinces in a new wave of an ongoing crackdown.

A majority of the arrested happened between Thursday and Sunday, according to a statement by the HDP lawmaker Ayse Acar Basaran who represents the Kurdish city of Batman.…

The new wave of arrests hit the HDP as Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to seize municipalities in Kurdish provinces once again if voters elect “those involved with terror,” in a veiled reference to the HDP-backed candidates.

Currently, 94 municipalities formerly run by HDP-affiliate mayors in Kurdish population centers remain under the control of Ankara-appointed bureaucrats and not the elected mayors who the Erdogan administration purged with removals from office and jailing in a process that began in 2016.

Upcoming local elections are set to be held in March 2019.

Despite being Turkey’s second-largest opposition bloc at the Parliament, Erdogan regularly describes HDP and its members as “terror collaborators,” as a large part of the party’s base also sympathize with the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighting Turkish government forces.

Sputnik: Has the number of Muslim tourists in Teplice increased over the past few years?

Iva Procházková: I believe the number of Muslim tourists has decreased; however, there are lots of Muslims in town. For example, there are no Muslims in the district of ?etenice, but there are lots of them in Šanov, Prosetice and in the city center during the tourist season. Šanov’s Muslims have had a big impact on the district’s living standards.
Moreover, the fact that they are also occupying the city’s parks, such as the park by the theater or the Palace Gardens, means that they’re spreading to the city center.
Sputnik: Has the current European migration crisis affected the locals’ treatment of Muslim tourists?

Iva Procházková: I think that only an uninformed person could mistake a migrant for a Muslim tourist, even though I have occasionally seen that. On the other hand, it also affects us, even indirectly. What Teplice residents should be concerned about are the Muslim settlements in the city, as well as the proximity of the unprotected borders with Germany.

According to the German Secret Service, around 2,000 Muslims are on the wanted list within their territory. I think the idea that one of them may opt to hide in the Teplice Muslim community is not so unimaginable. There are some quite disturbing reports of what is happening and what’s been proclaimed in Czech mosques. However, I don’t think that the migratory wave has altered the people’s treatment of our guests from the Arab world.
Sputnik: Do Arab tourists have an interest in permanent residence in the Czech Republic?

Iva Procházková: I consider this to be the most burning problem for today’s Teplice. Not only have Muslims bought hundreds of empty lots, but they also own dozens of houses in the city center, for example, in Teplice’s Prosetice district, Arabic names on doorbells are now a common thing. We also see an increased number of Muslims in the city during off season, when there are no spa guests.

I see Muslims daily on public transport, in shops, at the hospital or in the streets. Veiled Muslim girls are now a common sight at Teplice’s schools; school canteens even have special lunches for them. They are slowly and surely becoming part of the city, and the locals, without realizing it, are becoming accustomed to it. The fact that we are in imminent danger of (becoming) an unregulated society and (having) no-go areas, as we see in many Western European cities, is obvious.

I don’t understand why Teplice residents would nominate them in the municipal elections. This is a mockery of all the people who are either struggling to get along with them or trying to do something about it. But to be fair, there’s a decades’ difference between Muslim residents and tourists — in their nationality, social status and integration. However, there is no difference in their ideology of Islam, which I consider determinant.

Sputnik: Do you think that Khalouf Abdul Rahman and Ziad Hindawi (Khalouf is a Syrian, but not a Muslim) won’t be able to defend the interests of most of Teplice’s citizens just because they are Muslims or Arabs?

Iva Procházková: Yes, I’m sure of that, and it’s not about their origin or proficiency. I do not know them well enough to judge their competencies. As you know, Islam is not just a religion — religion is only a small part of it. It is a complex ideology, such as communism (I’m speaking about the form now, not the content). Islam has its own legal system and a set of ethical standards, that’s why I’m not sure that these gentlemen will be able defend the interests of the city.

Governing the city would certainly be a great contribution to Islam. I believe they are certainly good Muslims, which disqualifies them from having the power to decide on the residents of a non-Muslim country.

The views expressed in this article are solely those of Iva Procházková and do not necessarily reflect the official position of Sputnik.”

  16. Missing Pupils Spur on Forced Marriage Worries in Sweden, True Extent ‘Unknown’ (sputniknews, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/europe/201810091068719305-sweden-forced-marriage/

“Immigrant pupils who don’t return to school after the summer vacation may have been married off, Swedish authorities and NGOs warn, citing the absence of goal-oriented efforts to weed out this problem.

The number of calls to a hotline reporting child marriages and kidnapping with intent to marry off kids has increased from 61 in 2014 to 165 cases so far in 2018, Swedish Radio reported. The true extent of the problem nationwide remains largely unknown, however, as no organization is currently in charge of compiling statistics about missing young people.

The authorities in Sweden’s second-largest city of Gothenburg suspect that at least some of the children who didn’t show up after the vacation period have been effectively married off in their parents’ home countries.

Christina Malmqvist, an expert at the National Competency Team, argued that the true number of unreported cases greatly exceeds that of the calls to the support center.

“Many people try and deal with this without calling us, I believe far more are exposed,” Malmqvist told Swedish Radio.

Azam Qarai, spokesperson for the NGO Women’s Network, called for a comprehensive nationwide mapping of missing pupils to be able to analyze the data and do whatever possible to prevent this from happening.

According to Education Minister and Green Party spokesman Gustav Fridolin, the Swedish government has this year invested in tightening measures against schoolchildren “disappearing” from the radar. Among other things, school principals were urged to report absences. According to Fridolin, this will help determine long-term absences and set up a basis for a national survey.

Katarina Idegård, Gothenburg City coordinator against honor-related violence and oppression, stressed that the collected statistics are often difficult to interpret, as even if schools gather data on missing students, they are most often unable to determine the reason for the absences.

In 2014, at least 100,000 young people under the age of 25 were living under so-called honor-related oppression in Sweden, according to the government’s then-coordinator for family violence. While child marriage is strictly forbidden according to Swedish law, a 2016 survey by the Swedish Migration Board counted at least 132 cases of child marriage as a result of the 2015 migrant crisis. Katarina Idegård stressed that the extent of the problem is still unknown.

Previously, several Swedish authorities and media outlets called on girls at risk of being married off to put a teaspoon in their underwear as a signal to the authorities during airport checks. According to journalist and writer Katerina Janouch, who claimed to have failed to attract the attention of security personnel at Arlanda Airport despite following the “spoon-in-panties” instructions, the trick was no panacea.”

    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/09/high-tax-uk-families-worse-year/

“High levels of taxation are throttling families, as new statistics show household disposable income falling fractionally, despite pay levels rising.

While recent data showed wages rising at the strongest rate for three years, Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures published Monday revealed the average Briton had £4,813 disposable income in the second quarter of 2018 — 0.1 percent less compared with the same period a year earlier.

This drop was “driven mainly by an increase in current taxes on income and wealth”, according to the body’s latest bulletin on economic well-being in Britain, which also reported that GDP per head grew 0.2 percent from the first to second quarter of this year, making a rise of 0.6 percent compared to the same period in 2017…”

    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/09/two-men-beaten-paris-after-kissing-each-other-public/

“Two homosexual men in the 19th arrondissement of the French capital were physically attacked and taken to a hospital over the weekend after kissing each other in public.

The attack took place on Saturday night at 10 pm along the rue du Maroc in the heavily migrant-populated north of the French capital, in the 19th district which borders the troubled suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis.

The two men were set upon by two attackers with police saying that they believe homophobia as the motivation behind the assault, La Chaîne Info reports.

Police say that after the assault the two perpetrators fled the area but around an hour later they were able to arrest one of those involved and on the following day they arrested the second suspect but released him due to lack of evidence.

The two male victims were taken to a local hospital following the attack with both suffering pains in their ribs and injuries to their faces…”

  19. Short Shrift: Saudi Arabian Airline Denies Boarding to Man Wearing Shorts (breitbart, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/jerusalem/2018/10/09/short-shrift-saudi-arabian-airline-denies-boarding-to-man-wearing-shorts/

“A Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) flight denied entry to a man because he was wearing shorts and might offend the sensibilities of observant Muslim passengers.

Jordan Bishop, a contributor to Forbes magazine, said he had intended flying from Jakarta to Istanbul via Riyadh with the national carrier of the Sunni Islam state.

However, when he attempted to board the 4pm flight in the Indonesian capital, he was pulled aside by a member of staff.

He told Forbes the flight attendant explained to him: “You cannot fly with Saudia wearing shorts.” After asking if he could change into trousers, which he didn’t have, he was told he was not allowed onboard.

“When it became clear that I had no other option but to find a pair of pants on my own, I ran down the length of the terminal until I found a travel kiosk selling sarongs,” he said.

“I bought the first one I saw, raced back to the gate and tied it around my waist like a full-length skirt.”

Saudia is the national airline of Saudi Arabia, which follows a conservative interpretation of Sunni Islam called Wahhabism.

In August 2017 the carrier drew global attention when it issued a strict dress code for passengers, stating that it would refuse to fly “women exposing legs or arms, or wearing too thin or too tight clothes, and men wearing shorts exposing legs.””

  20. Short Sentences for African Refugees Who Hacked Man’s Head with Machetes (breitbart, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/09/short-sentences-for-african-refugees-who-hacked-mans-head-with-machetes/

“Two refugees from Somalia have received short sentences for splitting a man’s skull and mutilating his hand in a machete attack in Melbourne, Australia.

Abdirizak Mohamed Scek, 25, and Said Abdirahman, 28, gave “no explanation” for their savage attack on Nathan Brett, who was left with “a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and his finger hanging by a thread”, according to the Daily Mail.

The court heard Brett was set upon by a group of African men armed with machetes while walking through a North Melbourne park after a party, shortly after having discovered a friend with a machete wound nearby and calling an ambulance for him.

The Australian fled from his attackers but was pursued all the way to the door of a friend’s house, where he was given shelter.

Despite the ‘no more soft sentences’ headline in the Daily Mail report on the case — which suggested the migrants were given “more than ten years” by a “tough new female judge” — the prison terms handed down by the County Court of Victoria’s Judge Sarah Dawes were actually fairly short.

Abdirahman was given five-and-a-half years, with the possibility of parole after serving three-and-a-half, and Scek was given four years and nine months, with the possibility of parole after serving two years and nine months.

Taken individually, the terms are mere fractions of the “more than ten years” the Daily Mail managed to suggest by combining two separate sentences and glossing over the fact that they will likely not be served in full.

Such reporting practices are also common in the British press, which often appears to suggest members of child grooming gangs and other criminal enterprises will serve fantastically long sentences behind bars by adding multiple individual terms together and failing to account for the fact that release on licence is typically automatic halfway through a determinate sentence.

Nevertheless, the refugees’ supporters were outraged by the sentences given to their compatriots in Australia, swearing and disrupting the courtroom when they were handed down.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/latest-poland-calls-migration-threat-europe-58382449

“Poland’s interior minister says other European countries are coming around to his nation’s view that Europe’s capacity to absorb new migrants is limited.

Joachim Brudzinski told The Associated Press on Tuesday that “we are on the same wavelength that migration today, whether it’s legal or illegal, can be a threat to Europe.”

Speaking on the sidelines of an EU-U.S. security meeting in the French city of Lyon, he said, “It is not that we do not want to help.” But he said the “size of this migration flow goes very much beyond the capabilities of European countries.”

He said Italy, with a new populist government, is among countries now agreeing with Poland’s tough stance.

He acknowledged that differences remain over how to contain migration.

In opening the Lyon meeting, France’s prime minister insisted on the importance of finding international solutions to Europe’s migration flux instead of retreating behind national borders.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/man-hammer-hacks-algeria-statue-bare-breasted-woman-58382063

“A man with a hammer has attacked and damaged a statue of a bare-breasted woman, an emblem of the eastern city of Setif, in the latest in a series of such attacks.

Setif communications director Mohamed Topuiri said Tuesday that a Salafist, someone who adheres to a conservative brand of Islam, disfigured the face, breasts and arm of the statue, which is the centerpiece of a fountain.

Culture Minister Azzasedine Mihoubi, who’s from Setif, tweeted that the culprit was arrested. He suggested it was the same man who damaged the statue last year.

The colonial-era statue is the work of French sculptor Francis Saint Vidal, dating to 1889.

In 1997, when extremist violence raged, Islamists dynamited the statue, which was repaired in Italy.”

    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/egypt-security-forces-kill-10-militants-sinai-58379345

“Egypt says its security forces have killed 10 militants in a shootout in the city of el-Arish in the turbulent northern Sinai Peninsula.

A statement Tuesday by the Interior Ministry, which oversees security, said the shootout took place on a deserted farm used by the militants as a hideout. It did not say when the battle took place.

News of the fighting came a day after Libya’s self-styled National Army said it captured one of the most wanted militants in Egypt, Hisham el-Ashmawi, who is suspected of involvement in high-profile attacks in Egypt, including a 2013 failed assassination attempt against the interior minister at the time.

Militants now led by the Islamic State group have for years been battling Egyptian security forces in northern Sinai.”

  27. New Japan, Old Japan / Mobile mosque takes ‘omotenashi’ everywhere

A “mobile mosque” was unveiled in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, in late September, with Muslim residents of the Kanto region coming to say their prayers. Capable of being sent anywhere, this mosque on wheels was created with an eye on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as well as other international events that will be held in Japan.

The mosque looks like an ordinary truck, about 12 meters long and about 2.5 meters wide when it drives on the road. Within several minutes of parking, the sides expand to the right and left, rendering the truck about six meters wide. The vehicle has now become a 48-square-meter prayer room that can accommodate more than 50 people at once.

The prayer room has four air conditioners. It’s also equipped with water tanks and outdoor faucets so the faithful can wash before making their prayers.

A Tokyo-based event organizing company and others came up with the idea for the mosque, in a bid to provide omotenashi Japanese hospitality for Muslims. It was created by the executive committee for the mobile mosque project for about ¥100 million.

“Infrastructure is being improved to accommodate visitors to Japan of various nationalities, cultures and religions. However, the nation is short of places of worship for Islam — one of the three major religions in the world,” said Yasuharu Inoue, head of the Tokyo-based committee. “I’m a Buddhist, but I wanted to create an environment where everyone can say their prayers at ease.”

The mosque is expected to be leased to event organizers and dispatched to locations that don’t have sufficient rooms for prayer, such as gyms, stadiums and tourist facilities.

“There were very few places for worship for Muslims and they had to avoid people’s attention when I came to Japan 30 years ago,” said Sandha Saleem, a visitor to the mosque who is from Pakistan and currently living in Adachi Ward, Tokyo. “The number of prayer rooms has gradually increased in Japan, but even today, there aren’t many. So mobile mosques like this will make Muslims visiting Japan feel at home,” he said after prayers at the mosque.

Since the completion of the mobile mosque was announced to the press in July, the executive committee has received inquiries from more than 45 countries, and some event organizers are considering using it at international events.

“The mobile mosque is seen as very unique to Japan. Surprisingly, it’s getting a lot of attention from Islamic countries, where there are many mosques,” Inoue said. The committee has set out to create a second mobile mosque.

  30. Former BBC Editor Admits ‘Patronising’ Corporation ‘Got It Wrong’ on Immigration (breitbart, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/09/bbc-editor-patronising-wrong-immigration/

“Former BBC editor Robert Peston has admitted that the publicly-funded corporation “got it wrong” on immigration and was “patronising” towards voters who wanted to control it.

The 58-year-old journalist, who hosts ITV’s midweek political programme Peston and serves as the broadcaster’s political editor, made his confession in comments to the Cheltenham Literature Festival reported by the Daily Mail.

“For too long, people like me had a particular view of the benefits of globalisation and we simply neglected the effect it was having on millions of our citizens,” Peston, who worked at the BBC for nine years, admitted.

“[P]eople like me focused too much on the economic benefits in terms of the rates we were growing, and not enough on the experience of communities who were changing rapidly as a result.

“In a way, we were slightly patronising. People like me were basically saying ‘don’t you know this is making the country richer?’ In fact, it was also dislocating hundreds of thousands to millions of lives, and those people’s lives had been radically changed by immigration.”

He also confessed that the BBC may have been less than balanced during the EU referendum, and that he “did feel that during the Brexit campaign they slightly got confused about what impartial journalism meant” — perhaps hypocritically, in the view of commentators who have observed that his own sentiments on Brexit have been overwhelmingly negative since the people’s vote to leave.

Peston also told his audience that, “It is not, in my view, racist to be concerned if the composition of your community changes by something like 10 or 15 per cent over a very small number of years.”

Other left-wing figures such as former Labour leader Ed Miliband have made similar admissions before, but their words seldom translate into actual policy proposals to begin limiting immigration — which is still running at near-record levels — or improve the country’s dismal performance executing deportations.

Peston himself has recently faced criticism over the ‘no whites’ internships offered by his former programme Peston on Sunday, which would have shut out white working-class applicants of the sort most impacted by mass migration while offering a helping hand to ethnic minority youngsters even if they have wealthy parents and good connections.”

  31. International Terror Investigators Increasingly Uncovering Links to Sweden (breitbart, Oct 9, 2018)
    https://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/10/09/international-terror-investigators-increasingly-uncovering-links-sweden/

“International terrorism investigators say they are finding an increase in links to Sweden in their terror investigations.

Since the 2015 Paris Bataclan massacre, European Union member states have seen increased cooperation among law enforcement and intelligence agencies to combat terror. According to prosecutor Solveig Wollstad, Sweden’s National Representative of Eurojust, more and more cases are linked to Sweden in some way, SVT reports.

“There may be suspected terrorists who have been in close contact with Sweden, it could be people who have lived in Sweden, for example, there may have been money flowing through Sweden, or a connection in some other way,” Wollstad said.

Through Eurojust alone since 2015, various kinds of data from Sweden has been requested in at least 40 separate terrorist investigations. “We get more requests, about connections to Sweden and it does not have to lead to anything, but it may also be that there is information in Sweden that you want to share from other countries,” Wollstad noted.

Wollstad also said that part of the reason for the increase is likely due to better cooperation overall across Europe when it comes to terrorism investigations saying: “We did not see this with the truck attacks a couple of years ago, with Berlin and Nice and then Stockholm and other places; it was a rather unknown phenomenon before. The more you cooperate and exchange information, the more you can coordinate and be prepared.”

The prosecutor’s comments come after researcher Peder Hyllengren of the Swedish Defence College claimed that Sweden was becoming a base for international radical Islamic terrorism.

Hyllengren set some of the blame for the growth of radical Islamism on political correctness saying: “You risk being identified as racist in a way that you did not see in other European countries. There, this question was as uncontroversial as the importance of combating Nazism and right-wing extremism. But in Sweden, it took a long time before we could discuss jihadism in the same way that we discussed Nazism.”

Swedish politicians on the left have made several controversial statements in regard to jihadists, including Alice Bah Kuhnke who said that Sweden should integrate returning Islamic State jihadists.”

  34. Christine Ford: A Singular Fraud
    “No more psychology!” —Kafka
    October 9, 2018
    Christopher DeGroot

Enough, or too much. Christine Ford, the brave new hero to feminists, expects America to believe she needed a second front door for her Palo Alto home because, more than three decades after Judge Brett Kavanaugh allegedly tried to rape her, she was still feeling “claustrophobic.” Although, as she said, the two front doors are not, alas, “aesthetically pleasing,” at least the professor felt as safe as any snowflake college student with her coloring books and Play-Doh. Still, one should like to say: “Confess, lady of the bourgeois blues: The second front door is for your poor husband’s sake—a handy escape for him once you return from ‘couple’s therapy’!”

For what a singular fraud is Christine Ford. To begin with, as Thomas Lipscomb has shown, she probably lied about the actual purpose of the second front door. And though she is not a licensed psychologist, Ford tried to use her “psychological expertise” to make people think her memory is infallible. “Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter,” she put it with unintended comedy. But as I wrote in a recent article for American Thinker:

Imagine the tiniest tip of the world’s biggest iceberg. One that can crush cruise ships, major cities and political parties.

An internal audit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles released Monday shows about 1,500 customers may have been improperly registered to vote.

In early September, the DMV revealed it sent 23,000 erroneous voter registrations. These additional 1,500 errors occurred when DMV technicians processed customer requests at field offices to change voter eligibility responses on driver license applications.

Linking voter registration to the DMV has certainly paid huge dividends for the Dems. It’s also structurally a trainwreck. Then start handing out licenses to illegal aliens and the party really gets started.

Albán traveled to New York for meetings during the United Nations General Assembly at the end of September. He dedicated most of his final days to denouncing the Venezuelan socialist regime in public for its human rights violations and gross mismanagement of the economy.

Venezuelan officials reportedly justified his detention claiming they had evidence linking Albán to a failed drone attack on a military event in Caracas in August. Dictator Nicolás Maduro has used that attack, which caused no injuries, to order the arrest of several prominent pro-democracy politicians in the past two months.

  39. The opposition Conservatives are ringing the alarm bell following an exclusive Sun report revealing that Elections Canada sent a voter registration card to an asylum seeker who has only been in Canada for 18 months.

Concern over possible voter fraud continues in light of the Trudeau government’s plans to weaken voter integrity measures and make it easier for non-citizens to vote in the 2019 federal election.

Conservative Sen. Linda Frum noted that a new Liberal proposal, Bill C-76, would change the law so that voter registration cards will count as a legal form of ID at polling stations across Canada.
