Perhaps mourning the war dead is a luxury reserved for the victors. We should perhaps focus on earning that luxury.

  1. Thank you Eeyore for doing this nightly post. What an amazing archive you have/are creating!
I am heart broken (and angry) that we are having another anniversary (9/11 and Benghazi) and people are still argueing about the “religion of peace”… 1400 years of history should paint a clear enough picture.

  2. Netherlands supported Syrian jihadist group
    https://nltimes.nl/2018/09/11/netherlands-supported-syrian-jihadist-group-report

The Dutch government supported Jabhat al-Shamiya, an armed group in Syria that the Public Prosecutor labeled terrorist, according to research by Nieuwsuur and Trouw. A Dutch man is currently being prosecuted for participating in this group. The indictment states that Jabhat al-Shamiya is “salafist and jihadist”, “strives for the establishment of a caliphate”, and “can’t be otherwise qualified” than as a “criminal organization with terrorist intent”, Nieuwsuur reports.

Last year the Netherlands provided Jabhat al-Shamiya with uniforms and pickup trucks, among other things. The logistics equipment was sent to the group in the context of the state secret NLA program, which stands for ‘non lethal assistance’, according to Nieuwsuur. Through this program the Netherlands provided ‘non-lethal goods’ to 22 combat groups in Syria from 2015 until early this year. The research also showed that there was insufficient supervision on the aid provided to the Syrian groups and that the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, was barely informed about what was going on.
Parliamentarians have been asking for information about the NLA program for years, but until now the government has kept the names of the supported groups and specifics about the aid given to them secret. NIeuwsuur and Trouw managed to discover which groups were involved and which goods they received from the Netherlands. They talked to about 100 Syrian rebels over the past months and identified six specific armed groups that received Dutch support.
One of them was Jabhat al-Shamiya. Other groups that received Dutch support also appear to have been guilty of serious human rights violations and cooperating with extremist groups, according to the news agencies.
    [..]
Gert-Jan Segers, leader of coalition party ChristenUnie, spoke of a disconcerting image to Nieuwsuur. In 2015 his party filed a motion calling the government to stop supporting the moderate opposition, but the motion failed. “What is happening right now is exactly what we feared then. You don’t know if there were human rights violations or cooperation with jihadists. That is exactly what you do not want”, he said.
According to the PVV, the Nieuwsuur and Trouw investigation shows that the Dutch government broadly supports terrorists. “Rutte 3 = Terrorists 1”, PVV leader Geert Wilders said on Twitter.

My spouse of the opinion that if women ran the world we all be living in caves and still hunter gathers. While I would never agree face to face, there may well be a valid point there……………..The Y chromosome has a lot to answer for : )

“In the highly controversial area of human intelligence, the ‘Greater Male Variability Hypothesis’ (GMVH) asserts that there are more idiots and more geniuses among men than among women. Darwin’s research on evolution in the nineteenth century found that, although there are many exceptions for specific traits and species, there is generally more variability in males than in females of the same species throughout the animal kingdom.

Evidence for this hypothesis is fairly robust and has been reported in species ranging from adders and sockeye salmon to wasps and orangutans, as well as humans. Multiple studies have found that boys and men are over-represented at both the high and low ends of the distributions in categories ranging from birth weight and brain structures and 60-meter dash times to reading and mathematics test scores. There are significantly more men than women, for example, among Nobel laureates, music composers, and chess champions—and also among homeless people, suicide victims, and federal prison inmates.

Darwin had also raised the question of why males in many species might have evolved to be more variable than females, and when I learned that the answer to his question remained elusive, I set out to look for a scientific explanation. My aim was not to prove or disprove that the hypothesis applies to human intelligence or to any other specific traits or species, but simply to discover a logical reason that could help explain how gender differences in variability might naturally arise in the same species.”

  5. If this blog is underweight on any subject pertaining to its declared goal of illuminating the public on the threats represented by Socialism and Islam, it is in the field of economics. No ideology walks away from the kitchen table without a few bucks to propel it. When there is enough to eat, and our normalcy biases have not been murdered or imprisoned by reality, the Keynsian School carries on swimmingly. Fractional-reserve banking, debt-is-money, and the hundreds of trillions of dollars of furtive derivatives lurking in the shadow banking industry like bone-dry forest fire kindling, go unnoticed.

A gold standard need not exclude credit. Proper and effective credit is accommodated by the self-liquidating mechanism under the Austrian School. This point matters today because it is soon to become a matter of concern and examination. The third leg of the threat to civilization, Keynesian economics, allows unfettered credit expansion. Derivatives derive from derivatives ad infinitum. Mortgages are rehypothicated. Looney Leftist principles and behavior are financed under this regime, for under any alternative sensibility governed by common sense and free-market forces, progressive, socialist, post modernist, tyrannical impulses stay sitting where they belong–at the kitchen table–because no one in their right mind is willing to put up their own hard-earned cash to support such moral fluff and fire. But alas, some fire, some fluff, as Churchill is paraphrased. It is bringing us to our knees, this money thing.

If economic storms arise autumn is the time. If not now it is a mathematical certainty to be soon. Keynes died long ago. Austrian economics will be the phoenix of our rebirth. This is another mathematical certainty. We cannot continue to lie or be lied to about the basic necessity to work hard, save, invest, produce and risk. There is no real wealth creation without real production. There is no real production under the government ownership of the means of production. President Trump has mistakenly taken ownership of the current economic illusion. It is built on more debt and will backfire. Regardless, it is but a speed bump on the road ahead. Hopefully he gets good advice on the gold standard that awaits us.

          Ruble Collapsing

With Western sanctions biting, and more most likely to come after the Skripal announcements in the U.K., and Russians protesting pension reform in the streets, the Russian ruble is falling rapidly on international markets, reaching its lowest point in two years.

The euro rate on the Moscow Exchange rose 0.36% against the closing level of the previous trading session and reached 81.09 rubles. The euro was above 81 rubles last time on March 1, 2016. The dollar added 0.27% and climbed to 70.10 rubles. The dollar was above the level of 70 rubles last time on March 16, 2016, wrote Russian state news agency TASS.

“The sell-off was fueled by concerns over the central bank’s independence. Last week, prime minister Dmitry Medvedev called for rate cuts. The next interest rate decision is Friday. “This interference in monetary policy came at the worst possible time and has weighed heavily on the rouble,” wrote Commerzbank analyst Ulrich Leuchtmann,” wrote Seeking Alpha.

With American sanctions on Iran starting to become a serious issue in Tehran, the billions in arms and energy contracts with Moscow now seem in doubt. The Kremlin is also spending money once again in Syria as the final offensive in Idlib has begun.

  6. ICC Defies US Sanctions Threats Over Afghan Inquiry, Will “Work Undeterred” (sputniknews, Sep 11, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/world/201809111067930104-international-criminal-court-us-sanctions-threat/

“Earlier, White House National Security Advisor John Bolton said that the US would not cooperate with, provide assistance to or join the International Criminal Court, and threatened court officials with sanctions if the tribunal investigates suspected war crimes by US military personnel in Afghanistan.

In a short statement released Tuesday, the ICC declared that it was “an independent and impartial judicial institution” which serves “as an instrument to ensure accountability for crimes that shock the conscience of humanity.”

According to the ICC, its “jurisdiction is subject to the primary jurisdiction of states themselves to investigate and prosecute allegations of those crimes and bring justice to the affected communities. It is only when the states concerned fail to do so at all or genuinely that the ICC will exercise jurisdiction.”

“The ICC, as a court of law, will continue to do its work undeterred, in accordance with those principles and the overarching idea of the rule of law,” the statement concluded.

The court’s statement follows Monday’s threats by National Security Advisor John Bolton to sanction the ICC if it went ahead with plans to investigate suspected war crimes in Afghanistan carried out members of the US armed forces and the CIA between 2003 and 2004.
Later in the day, when asked to comment on Bolton’s remarks, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that the ICC’s possible Afghanistan inquiry was a “threat to American sovereignty,” and warned that “the United States would consider those options” proposed by Bolton if the tribunal proceeded with its investigation.

In a speech in Washington on Monday, Bolton said that the US would consider barring ICC judges and prosecutors from entering the US, prevent them from launching legal proceedings, sanction funds and prosecute them in US courts if the ICC sought to prosecute American citizens or citizens of allied nations, such as Israel. Commenting on an ICC inquiry into alleged Israeli war crimes in the West Bank and Gaza, Bolton called Israel’s actions an effort “to defend citizens from terrorist attacks,” and said that the United States would “not allow the ICC, or any other organization, to constrain Israel’s right to self-defense.”

“The United States will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” Bolton said.

The United States never ratified the Rome Treaty which established the International Criminal Court, which began its work in July 2002. The Bush administration, for whom Bolton served as ambassador to the United Nations, opposed the court’s mandate. The ICC has 123 participating members, and is the only permanent international judicial structure competent to hear cases of crimes against humanity and war crimes. In 2002, Washington adopted the American Services-Members’ Protection Act, which authorized the use of any means necessary to free US personnel if they are detained by the ICC.

Russia withdrew its signature from the Rome Statute in late 2016, citing national interests and the ICC’s perceived lack of objectivity.”

  8. Border agents in South Texas saw increase in migrant families make illegal crossings in August

    https://www.lmtonline.com/news/article/Border-agents-in-South-Texas-saw-increase-in-13219268.php

The number of Central American families arrested for entering the United States illegally surged again in August, according to a Trump administration official and Border Patrol agents in South Texas, an increase that comes as the president threatens a government shutdown to extract funding from Congress for a border wall.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expected to publish the most recent border arrest totals this week, and the numbers will be used to gauge the effect of President Donald Trump’s order halting the separation of migrant parents from their children.

Agents working in the Rio Grande Valley, the nation’s busiest corridor for illegal crossings, say they’ve seen more families turn themselves in and ask for asylum in recent weeks, a potential indication that the policy reversal has encouraged more Central Americans to head north.

“They keep coming and coming,” said one agent. “There were some really large groups. Any time you have to use buses to come and pick them up, that’s not a good sign.”

  9. Staged Filming of Mock ‘Chemical Attacks’ Has Begun in Idlib – Russian MoD (sputniknews, Sep 11, 2018)
    https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201809111067930808-idlib-footage-alleged-chemical-attacks/

“As the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation reported, all the fake footage of “chemical attacks,” designed to facilitate the implication of Syrian government forces, is expected to be sent to different TV channels before the end of the day.

“According to the information received from inhabitants of Idlib province, militants are now filming a staged provocation in the city of Jisr al-Shugur, where “chemical weapons” are depicted as being used by the Syrian army against civilians. The film crews of several Middle Eastern TV channels arrived in Jisr al-Shugur in the morning, as well as the regional affiliate of one of the main American television news networks,” the Reconciliation Center said.

The Russian military added that the militants had brought two containers loaded with a chlorine-based toxic substance to Jisr al-Shughur to make the provocation seem “natural.”

“The plot envisages staged scenes showing ‘activists’ from the Civil Defense (“White Helmets”) ‘helping’ the residents of Jisr al-Shughur after the Syrian army allegedly used the so-called barrel bombs with poisonous substances,” the center said.

According to the center, all videos of provocations shot in Jisr al-Shughur will be handed to broadcasters by the end of the day after being released via social media.

Later in the day, Syrian human rights activist and public figure Ammar Jamal has confirmed to Sputnik that a group of 30 representatives of the White Helmets had arrived to Idlib to organize a provocation. According to human rights activists, the White Helmets arrived on Tuesday morning with tanks with an unknown gas. At the moment, they are located on a grain storage site.

The information follows Sunday’s Wall Street Journal report that the US Defense Department might be mulling the idea of striking Russian or Iranian military forces aiding the Syrian government if they were to launch an assault on Idlib. The report added that the United States would specifically decide whether to strike Russian air defense installations…”

  11. 100 Bangladeshi Nationals Apprehended near Texas Border in 3 Weeks

Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents continue to lead the nation in the apprehension of Bangladeshi nationals who illegally cross the border from Mexico into Texas. More than 100 were arrested in the past three weeks — totaling 622 this fiscal year.

On September 7, Laredo Sector agents apprehended a group of five illegal immigrants who crossed the Rio Grande River border with Mexico into the Santa Rita subdivision. The agents interviewed the group and learned that they came to the U.S. from Bangladesh, according to Laredo Sector Border Patrol officials.

The Bangladeshis consisted of two juveniles and three adults, officials stated.

The latest arrests bring the total for Fiscal Year 2018 to 622. A few weeks ago, Breitbart Texas reported on the number of arrests at 520 after agents arrested more than 20 Bangladeshi nationals over a short period of days. Since that time, more than 100 Bangladeshis were arrested in the Laredo Sector alone.

  12. Trump official John Bolton declares International Criminal Court ‘dangerous’ and ‘dead to’ America

He labels the ICC as a ‘freewheeling global organisation governing over people without their consent’

National Security Advisor to Donald Trump, John Bolton, has said the International Criminal Court (ICC) is “dead to us” in his latest speech.

He labelled the court as “illegitimate” and “for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead to us”.

Mr Bolton, who has long held an unfavourable view of the court, who was speaking at a meeting of the Federalist Society, a conservative group based in Washington DC, said the ICC was “ineffective, unaccountable, and indeed outright dangerous”.

The court, established in 2002 in The Hague in the Netherlands, has the power to prosecute individuals for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. The US never ratified the Rome Statute that established the court and George W Bush, in the early days of the still-ongoing war in Afghanistan, never ratified it.

    • US threatens to arrest ICC judges who probe war crimes

The United States threatened Monday to arrest and sanction judges and other officials of the International Criminal Court if it moves to charge any American who served in Afghanistan with war crimes.

White House National Security Advisor John Bolton called the Hague-based rights body “unaccountable” and “outright dangerous” to the United States, Israel and other allies, and said any probe of US service members would be “an utterly unfounded, unjustifiable investigation.”

“If the court comes after us, Israel or other US allies, we will not sit quietly,” Bolton said.

He said the US was prepared to slap financial sanctions and criminal charges on officials of the court if they proceed against any Americans.

“We will ban its judges and prosecutors from entering the United States. We will sanction their funds in the US financial system, and we will prosecute them in the US criminal system,” he said.

“We will do the same for any company or state that assists an ICC investigation of Americans,” he said.

  13. Things Are So Dire in Brazil That Millions Are Refusing to Vote

(Bloomberg Businessweek) — Augusto Silva and Lindomar Nascimento live in the town of São Sebastião on the outskirts of Brazil’s capital city, Brasília. Both are poor. Both are scarred by gun violence. And both are angry.

For one of them, this anger has hardened into political apathy: What’s the point of voting in next month’s presidential election? Silva asks. The whole system is rotten anyway.

For Nascimento, the anger has fueled the opposite reaction: a desire to vote for the first time in 20 years. His candidate? Jair Bolsonaro, the minority-bashing former paratrooper who wants to arm the “good citizens” of Brazil. Bolsonaro is being celebrated by his supporters as a martyr after being stabbed by a fanatic during a campaign rally last week. Bolsonaro remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

    CAPE TOWN (AFP) –

South Africa’s murder rate rose again last year, official statistics showed Tuesday, with over 20,000 killed across the country — about 57 a day — as police admitted they were struggling to keep control.

A total of 20,336 people were killed in the 12 months to March this year, up from 19,016 the previous year.

The numbers reflect a 6.9 percent year-on-year increase, one of the highest per capita since the end of apartheid 24 years ago.

  15. ‘Brussels only understands language of money, not values’ – Italian Deputy PM Salvini to RT (RT, Sep 11, 2018)
    https://www.rt.com/news/438136-matteo-salvini-rt-interview/

“EU bureaucrats are not interested in values and principles, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini told RT. He also said nations like France take a hypocritical stance when they bash Italy’s migration policy.

Italy will not vote for the EU’s next seven-year budget if there is not an agreement on other crucial issues, like migration, Salvini, who also serves as Italy’s interior minister, told RT’s Sophie Shevardnadze in an exclusive interview at the sidelines of the European House – Ambrosetti Forum in Italy.

“Unfortunately in Brussels and in Europe they only understand the language of money. Therefore they are not talking about principles, values, solidarity – but economic issues.”

The Italian government has received flak for championing stronger border control and blocking migrant ships from entering its ports. Last month, a charity NGO-run ship called the Aquarius, carrying more than 600 migrants from Africa, was rejected by Italy and had to dock in Spain instead.

Italy’s decision was slammed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said Italy doesn’t have “the same migratory pressure” as last year. Salvini fired back, hinting at hypocrisy.

“Other European countries – like France – close their borders and send back 50,000 people, and then try to lecture us,” he said, adding that NGO-operated ‘rescue ships’ exacerbate the crisis. “There are some international missions that have brought tens of thousands of migrants to Italy alone.”

Rome’s position prompted some EU officials and politicians to label Italy as dangerous. The EU Budget Commissioner Gunther Oettinger said last week that governments like the one in Italy want to “weaken or even destroy” the European project.

The Italian deputy prime minister dismisses such claims and says that, despite the harsh criticism of the EU migration policy, he doesn’t agree that his country is ruled by an ‘anti-EU’ government.

“I am not against Europe. I am in favor of a Europe that does few things, but does them well – leaving freedom of choice on other fronts for individual states.”…”

Newly released text messages show disgraced FBI official Peter Strzok asked to speak to former FBI lawyer Lisa Page about a “media leak strategy” during a crucial period of the Trump-Russia investigation in 2017.

The text messages were revealed Monday by North Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Meadows, a member of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee.

“An ambush by the Islamic State jihadist group has killed 21 regime fighters in Syria’s southern province of Sweida, a Britain-based war monitor said on Tuesday.

The attack occurred late Monday in the rural Tulul al-Safa area of the province, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Eight jihadists were also killed in subsequent clashes in the area, which is the jihadists’ last bastion in Sweida, the Observatory said.

State news agency SANA reported heavy clashes with IS in the area, adding that government aircraft and artillery “targeted hideouts and positions” held by the group.

Government forces have been fighting IS in Sweida’s arid plains since jihadists carried out a wave of attacks in the mainly Druze province on July 25, killing 250 people according to the Observatory.

During their rampage, which targeted the provincial capital as well as rural areas, the jihadists also seized around 30 hostages, mostly women and their children.

  18. Robat the robot mimics bats, using sound alone to navigate

Robot + bat = a new bot that uses an echo-based sonar system to get around and map new surroundings.

    Meet Robat.

It’s a fully autonomous terrestrial robot that gets around by emitting audio and analyzing the returning echoes, much like bats do, to generate an accurate map of a space. It shows “great potential” for the use of sound in future robotics applications, its creators say.

Unlike Bat Bot, a winged robot inspired by bat movements, this little wheeled robot out of Tel Aviv University looks nothing like a bat. But it acts like one. An ultrasonic speaker mimics the bat’s mouth, emitting frequency modulated chirps at a typical bat rate. Two ultrasonic microphones mimic its ears.

“Unlike the narrow-band signals typically used in robotic applications, the bat’s wide-band signals provide ample spatial information allowing it to localize multiple reflectors within a single beam,” reads a study on Robat published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. “This is the approach we aimed to test and mimic in this study.”

amantha Kuberski hanged herself with a belt from a crib. She was 6.

Razy Sellars was 11 when he took his life. Gabriel Taye was 8. Jamel Myles was 9.

Suicide in elementary school-aged children remains rare: 53 children aged 11 and younger took their lives in 2016, the last year for which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has data. But medical professionals and researchers have noted alarming increases in the last decade – deaths more than doubled from 2008 to 2016 – and rising numbers of young children visiting emergency rooms for suicidal thoughts and attempts.

“You hear of all these kids taking their lives, and you just don’t understand why it is,” says Christine Sellars, Razy’s grandmother. “I don’t know if it’s the changing times, the way kids are brought up today or the peer pressure.

    “It’s just so sad.”

The reasons for the increases are unclear. Few researchers have examined suicide before age 10, so little is known about suicidal thinking and behavior in young children.

  22. Putin’s Ex-Bodyguard Challenges Navalny to a ‘Duel’

The head of Russia’s National Guard has challenged opposition leader Alexei Navalny to a duel and promised to pound him into a ‘juicy steak’ as punishment for Navalny’s series of videos exposing alleged corruption by Russia’s top government officials.

In an Aug. 23 video investigation, Navalny alleged that leadership in the Russian National Guard had diverted millions of rubles from procurement contracts earmarked for food for soldiers. Viktor Zolotov, President Vladimir Putin’s former bodyguard, heads the National Guard. Navalny, meanwhile, is serving a 30-day sentence behind bars for a protest-related infraction.

In a rare video address published on the National Guard’s YouTube page, Zolotov said Navalny had slandered the National Guard, and it wouldn’t be forgotten.

“The officer corps aren’t allowed to let these things go,” said Zolotov. “For centuries, people slapped people in the face and challenged them to a duel.”

  23. Possible crack pipe vending machines found on Long Island

    CORAM, Long Island (WABC) —
Town of Brookhaven officials and Suffolk County police are trying to figure out who placed three potential crack pipe vending machines, dubbed as pen vending machines, in Coram and Medford.

The town received complaints about the machines over the weekend. Two of them — one of which had partially destroyed by community members — have been removed.

The blue and white vending machines, which featured the words “Sketch Pens” on the outside in black and red font, were mounted in cement into the ground and would dispense a small glass tube and a filter. Included was the top of a pen, which could be put into the glass tube to form a pen, along with an ink tube.

The “pens” cost $2 each, and the machines would accept the payment in the form of eight quarters.

Vice President Mike Pence is condemning the deadly string of Iranian rocket attacks against a Kurdish population in Iraq.

The criticism by Pence comes in response to an offensive over the weekend that killed 14 people and wounded 40 more.

He called the attack an effort by Iran to threaten and destabilize its closest neighbor.

Pence has long stood up for the Kurdish minority population in the Middle East.

The call with Pence also discussed counter terrorism efforts in the region.

  26. New Strzok-Page texts on ‘media leak strategy’ coincided with apparent media collusion involving Mueller deputy Weissmann
    By J.E. Dyer September 11, 2018

The big news in the Russiagate drama on Monday was a letter from Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, expressing grave concern about references in recently released text messages between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page to orchestrated media leaks from the Justice Department and FBI.

    Meadows puts it this way:

Our review of these new documents raises grave concerns regarding an apparent systemic culture of media leaking by high-ranking officials at the FBI and DOJ related to ongoing investigations.

Review of these new documents suggests a coordinated effort on the part of the FBI and DOJ to release information in the public domain potentially harmful to President Donald Trump’s administration.

Meadows goes on to cite specific communications on 10 and 12 April 2017:

“Turkey’s government is not attending Europe’s largest human rights conference because it was not allowed to prevent the participation of non-governmental organizations.

The U.S. Helsinki Commission, a U.S. government agency, said on Twitter on Monday that “Turkey is the only country boycotting … because it insists on having the ability to veto NGOs wishing to participate.”

The yearly two-week conference, which opened Monday in Warsaw, is devoted to democracy and human rights. It is organized by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which comprises 57 states from North America, Europe and Central Asia.

    https://www.news24.com/Africa/News/un-blasts-nigeria-for-human-trafficking-20180910

“The United Nations on Monday criticised Nigeria for failing to tackle human trafficking, after a human rights mission looked at efforts to stamp out the organised trade in people.

“What is being done is not enough,” the world body’s special rapporteur on the subject, Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, told reporters at the end of an eight-day visit.

Some 18 000 Nigerians arrived in Italy via the Mediterranean Sea from north Africa in 2017, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The number of arrivals in Europe fell sharply in the first six months of this year but Giammarinaro said there was “no indication of a decrease in the trafficking trend”.

“Some are already recruited by their traffickers in the country of origin, others may start their migration journey voluntarily,” she told a news conference in Abuja.

“Due also to the absence of safe and regular migration channels, the vast majority of them fall prey to traffickers in transit countries, especially in Libya, and (are) subject to all forms of human rights violations including torture, rape, extortion, and exploitation amounting to trafficking, slavery and forced labour.”

According to the latest IOM figures, some 36 000 Nigerians were stuck in Libya or neighbouring Niger in December last year.

Nigeria’s own immigration service has estimated that about 10 000 nationals died in the Sahara desert or in the Mediterranean Sea between January and May last year.

Giammarinaro noted that human trafficking in Nigeria was not always north towards Europe but also to the Gulf, Russia and southern Africa “mainly for the purposes of sexual and labour exploitation”.

“”Hungary will protect its borders, stop illegal migration and will defend its rights. If needed we will stand up to you too,” Orban told the EU Parliament.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Tuesday said that Hungary would not change its policy regarding illegal migration and would stand up to the European Union if needed.

“Hungary will protect its borders, stop illegal migration and will defend its rights. If needed we will stand up to you too,” Orban told the EU Parliament.

The statement was made amid the European Parliament’s plenary debate on the damning report on Hungary drafted by Judith Sargentini, a European lawmaker from the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance.

Hungary has long been critical of the European Union’s open-door policy, initially introduced at the onset of the continent’s migration crisis, and opposed the mandatory migrant relocation quotas. Budapest’s stance prompted the European Commission to launch its first infringement procedure against Hungary over its asylum legislation in December 2015. Hungary, in particular, set up border fences and enhanced border control with neighboring Serbia…”

  31. Germany: AfD chief takes threat of party surveillance ‘very seriously’

Co-leader of Germany’s right-wing party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel said she took the threat of surveillance by Germany’s State Office for the Protection of the Constitution “very seriously,” while speaking at a press conference alongside second party co-leader Alex Gauland and Member of the Bundestag Bernd Baumann in Berlin on Tuesday.

“We take this question very seriously,” Weidel said, and added that they would be discussing “legal and organisational” counterstrategies, as well as measures at the “public, communicative” level.

Gauland commented on AfD rallies being attended by right-wing extremists, and said: “We need to be careful that people we don’t want around us aren’t included in demonstrations we organise, that is completely correct.”

The AfD has come under fire in light of the recent right-wing, anti-migrant riots and which occurred in Chemnitz at the end of August and the demonstrations which followed.

Vice-President of the Bundestag Thomas Oppermann called for their observation by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution after AfD member Bjorn Hocke joined a rally in the aftermath of the riots alongside the anti-Islam PEGIDA group.

  33. Hungarian Government ‘fuels discrimination against migrants’, say human rights experts (UN-news, Sep 11, 2018)
    https://news.un.org/en/story/2018/09/1018962

“New laws in Hungary, and Government attacks on civil society in the country, fuel “hostility, xenophobia, and discrimination against migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and all those trying to provide them support”, say a team of independent human rights experts mandated by the UN Human Rights Council.

The experts expressed concern in a statement released on Tuesday, following the adoption of legislation which the Hungarian Government has named the “Stop Soros” law, imposing further restrictions on the right to seek asylum, and making it practically impossible for asylum seekers to submit asylum claims and regularise their migratory status.

The Government’s name for the law is a reference to Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros, whose Open Society Foundations (OSF) are committed to “build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people”, according to the OSF Website.

OSF has reportedly moved its Budapest branch to the German capital, Berlin, writing in a May statement that it was leaving Hungary because of the “increasingly repressive political and legal environment.”

Under the measures, individuals or organisations can also be sent to prison for “supporting and facilitating illegal immigration.”

Additional laws levy a special 25 per cent tax on NGOs who engage in “immigration activities”, restrict assembly, and impose restrictions on the work of civil society.

The experts noted that the Government is encouraging regular and widespread threats to human rights defenders in Hungary, saying: “Since the last general election, the Government has engaged in smear campaigns against civil society, particularly in connection to migration issues, discrediting and intimidating dissenting voices, notably through its own agencies and through the public media.”

These attacks, combined with the current legislation, they continued, run counter to Hungary’s obligations under international human rights law and represent a serious breach by Hungary of the obligations and values that found the European Union, of which it is a member.

“We call on the European institutions to continue addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in Hungary and keep on taking decisions reflecting the core values of the European Union: democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights.”

A number of international and inter-governmental institutions have condemned the legislation, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Committee, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the European Commission.

The European Parliament is reportedly discussing whether to launch disciplinary proceedings against Hungary, due to its policies on issues such as migration.”

  34. Remembering 9/11 in the Age of Trump
At last, beyond denial and fatalism?
    September 11, 2018
    Bruce Bawer

One day in the early stages of the AIDS crisis – so early, in fact, that I don’t think the disease had yet acquired that name – I fell into conversation with a young man at a gay bar in L.A. It turned out that he, like me, was from New York. But whereas I was in L.A. on a trip, he had recently pulled up stakes and moved there. Why? Because, he told me, his friends back east were beginning to get sick and die, and it was having an impact on the “scene.”

I pointed out that the gay population of San Francisco was also hard hit, and that even if the situation was not yet quite as dire in L.A., it would surely catch up soon enough. He admitted as much, but estimated that in L.A. he had another six months during which he could keep leading the freewheeling life he’d enjoyed in the Big Apple. His attitude, in short, hovered somewhere in the dark, uncharted territory between denial and fatalism.

On September 11, 2001, New York – along with Washington, D.C. – was struck by mass death in another form. It shook the world. Mainstream European commentators attributed the terrorist attacks to legitimate Muslim grievances against America, and breezily dismissed suggestions that Europe might soon be struck as well. Sweeping aside Osama bin Laden’s claims, President Bush asserted that the attacks had nothing to do with Islam, which he called a “religion of peace.” He then sent armed forces to “liberate” Afghanistan and Iraq, on the premise that the people of those countries, if allowed to vote in democratic elections, would choose a democratic path.

It all turned out to be spectacularly wrong. The European savants were shown up by the horrific attacks on Madrid, Beslan, London, and elsewhere. Their perpetrators put the lie to the “religion of peace” rhetoric, repeatedly announcing that they were committing jihad, a core Islamic concept. Some people in the West understood. But the West’s cultural elite turned away. And Western leaders, while sending young men to fight abroad, left the gates wide open at home.

  35. #AbolishICE: Illegal Alien Assaults on ICE Personnel Keep Rising
    September 9, 2018
    Daniel Greenfield

How much of an influence is the left’s media backed campaign to demonize ICE personnel while treating illegal alien migrants as the latest civil rights cause? And to what extent is the pro-illegal lobby hoping for its own Ferguson Effect by targeting ICE?

Assaults on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents reached a decade high in 2017, and assaults on Border Patrol agents also have surged in recent years, according to government numbers that seem to support agents’ claims that immigrants living in the U.S. illegally increasingly are looking to fight rather than flee.

The new numbers, reported by Homeland Security’s inspector general, could even be underselling the problem, investigators said, because the government doesn’t do a good job of tracking incidents, and agents and officers don’t always report them properly.

But the report does signal renewed danger particularly on the southwest border, where agents say a surge in illegal immigration in recent years generally correlates with growing violence.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, often refuse to bring charges or win cases against the perpetrators, the audit found.

That’s one way to abolish ICE. And it’s another example of lefty privilege.

  36. Italy, Austria sharpen criticism of UN over migrants (abcnews, Sep 11, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/italy-austria-sharpen-criticism-migrants-57748666

“Italy and Austria issued sharp retorts to the new U.N. human rights chief Tuesday over her plans to send in teams to investigate the treatment of migrants, with Italy saying the move is “inappropriate, unfounded and unjust.”

A foreign ministry statement recalled all the praise Italy has received over the years for rescuing migrants, providing assistance projects in migrants’ home countries and cracking down on Libyan-based smuggling networks that have greatly reduced the number of arrivals.

The ministry said it hoped the data “will help the newly installed high commissioner” understand Italy’s commitment and its track record.

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who took over as U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights last week, announced plans to send teams to Italy and Austria to examine the treatment of migrants after her first major address Monday.

In Vienna on Tuesday, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz demanded “clarification” from the U.N. of “what human rights violations” are suspected in Austria, the Austria Press Agency reported.

“It is particularly important to clear up how and why the decision came about that Austria in particular should be examined,” he added. Kurz said he would defend Austria against any unjustified suspicion.

Amid such protests, Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for the U.N. human rights office, said it was “not unusual at all” for it to deploy teams to countries, saying they often conduct “working-level visits to various countries where we see that there are human rights concerns for them to look at.”

She told reporters in Geneva that rights office teams were dispatched to Bulgaria, France, Greece and Macedonia as well as Italy in 2016.

Shamdasani said she did not have precise dates for the visits to Austria and Italy, but “I’m told it’s a matter of weeks.””

    Frontpagemag.com

The Left is so determined on defeating and smearing Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Republican Ron DeSantis that a hit piece at the Washington Post has gone viral to MSNBC, CNN, the Huffington Post, Newsweek and many more outlets. The article headline placed DeSantis at the David Horowitz Restoration Weekend – according to the Post “a racially charged event” – and then the text insinuated that the event had racial overtones. E.g. that Milo Yiannopolous one of the speakers mentioned black genitals. The reporter was evidently unaware that Milo is married to a black man and that this was a joke. Huffington Post escalated these shaky facts into the claim that DeSantis had attended an event held by “an infamous racist” and a “White Race War Theorist.”

These are disgusting lies that show how far the Left will go in pursuit of their political ends. Congressman Ron DeSantis is a fine man who does not deserve to be the victim of the Left’s political of personal destruction. This video explains why David is a target.

  38. Memories of Leftist Glee About 9/11
How progressives saw poetic justice in planes plunging into U.S. buildings packed with innocents.
    September 11, 2018
    Jamie Glazov

I will never forget how, seventeen years ago on this day, many of the leftists around me in my neighborhood and community had very little trouble expressing their glee about Al Qaeda’ strike on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

I had known some of these leftists for years, and after the fall of the Soviet empire in 1989–91 many of them bitterly lamented to me that the “alternative to capitalism” was now gone. A significant number of them retreated into a silent and sullen shell.

    Then came 9/11.

Almost overnight, these individuals underwent a miraculous transformation. A bright sparkle could once again be detected in their eyes, as their revolutionary selves came out of a deep slumber. Never had I seen them so happy, so hopeful, and ready for another attempt at creating a glorious and revolutionary future. Without doubt, September 11 represented a personal — and morbid — vindication for them.

The images of the innocent people jumping to their deaths from the Twin Towers evoked no sympathy from these individuals. Instead, they saw only poetic justice in American commercial airplanes plunging into American buildings packed with people. For my leftist acquaintances, the jihadist terror war gave promise of succeeding in a project in which Communism had failed: to obliterate the capitalist system itself. “The U.S. brought this on itself,” they stated repeatedly — and with scornful self-satisfaction.

  39. 9/11: Never Forget Project
Ripon College is not too enthused over it.
    September 11, 2018
    Jack Kerwick

The 17th anniversary of September 11, 2001 is upon us and the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) at Ripon College had been planning a 9/11 project.

Evidently, the school’s “Bias Protocol Board” is not too enthused over it.

YAF’s “9/11: Never Forget Project,” which began 15 years ago, consists of 2,977 flags representing each life that was extinguished on that day of infamy, as well as a poster featuring multiple images and photographs of the Islamic terrorists who murdered them.

According to YAF, its members were informed that the project, particularly the poster, is objectionable because it “relentlessly” targets “one religious organization, one religious group, one religious identity [.]” As such, it gives rise to an environment within which “students from a Muslim background would feel singled out and/or harassed.”

A spokesperson from Ripon said that school officials merely offered student representatives of YAF “suggestions as to how to have a discussion about 9/11 this year with our entire campus and community” (emphasis mine).

Presumably, YAF’s project as such is insufficiently inclusive.
