A federal judge ordered the Los Angeles Times to change an article about a Southern California police officer over the weekend. The article included information about a plea agreement between prosecutors and Glendale police Detective John Saro Balian.
As part of the plea agreement, Balian pleaded guilty on Thursday to lying to investigators looking into whether he has connections to the Mexican Mafia and Armenian organized crime. Balian was arrested in May at his home in Seal Beach.
On Saturday morning, the Times posted an article that used information from Balian’s plea agreement, which was mistakenly posted to a public online service for court documents, according to the newspaper. The agreement was supposed to have been sealed.
Balian’s attorney, Craig Missakian, was granted an order from U.S. District Judge John Walter to take down the article, according to the Times. The paper then removed information from the article that came from the plea agreement. Missakian wouldn’t comment to the paper about the order.
The Times said it wants to challenge Walter’s order.

Among the least talked about scandals in Washington is how immigration officials spent decades misleading Congress about the number of migrants evading court. I discussed that scandal at length in my last article.
In advancing this decadeslong effort, no accounting trick and no false narrative was out of bounds. Never in any year did these officials tell the real story of a court system in crisis. Brave rhetoric and bleached numbers consistently camouflaged the courts’ disarray.
“The fight against terrorism,” the Bush and Obama administrations boldly declared from 2005 through 2012, “is the first and overriding priority of the Department of Justice. … A key component of this effort is the securing of our nation’s borders and the repair of the immigration system as a whole. The application and enforcement of our immigration laws remain a critical element of this national effort.”
Both administrations insisted that immigration courts serve “as the front-line presence nationwide in immigration matters.”
Yet court officials’ words and actions didn’t match up with a “front-line presence.” While nearly a million people ran from court over the last 22 years—meaning 37 percent of all those free pending trial failed to appear for their hearings—no alarm was sounded by those in charge.
The courts’ 2007 annual report is just one example of the misleading numbers court officials pushed out for congressional oversight and public consumption each year.

Patrons in Moreno Valley were lucky to escape tragedy after a speeding car drove through the front entrance of a gym.
Witnesses recorded the harrowing incident at the Fitness 19 gym at 12220 Perris Blvd. The car, a white sedan, can be seen rounding surrounding cars at a parking lot before careening into the occupied gym.
“I got here to teach a class and the whole half of the gym’s missing,” said Carla Rosa, an instructor at the gym.

Double the number of voters want a clean exit from the European Union (EU) than those who want to follow the Prime Minister’s plan to keep the UK tied to the bloc’s rules, a shock poll has shown.
The survey, by ComRes for The Mirror, showed a strong preference for leaving the EU on World Trade Organization rules – as the UK already trades with most of the world – over staying locked to goods and agriculture rules as Theresa May’s Chequers deal demands.
It shows that 39 percent of people think the Prime Minister “should accept a no deal and the UK simply leave the EU”. However, only 20 percent believe she should push ahead for a “soft Brexit”.
More than half – 51 percent – of Conservative Party voters want to walk away from the EU without a deal, compared with 26 per cent of Labour Party supporters.
Meanwhile, a quarter of all voters – including 36 percent of those who back Labour and 16 percent of Tory voters – want the Prime Minister to ask for an extension to the March deadline for a deal.

Swedish national broadcaster SVT has unpublished an opinion piece penned by a person attached to the Stockholm Jewish Assembly after the author and his family were threatened with violence, the Swedish news outlet Samhällsnytt has reported.
In the article, the writer criticized Center party leader Annie Lööf and the Swedish media for focusing on alleged Nazi anti-Semitism in connection with the her speech at Almedalen Week, a political gathering. She claims to have been disrupted by booing right-wing extremists. The author argued that today the Jew-hating Muslims constituted a more palpable threat for Swedish Jews than Nazis. The piece bore the self-explanatory headline “Nazism is not the greatest threat to Jews” and pointed out a “deeply indoctrinated hatred” among many Muslims.
After a while, visitors to SVT’s page discovered that the link to the article no longer worked. Instead, the message “Oops, the page does not exist” was displayed. No explanation for why the article was removed was presented.

However, when readers contacted SVT’s editorial board, they confirmed that no technical error had occurred.
“Right, the link does not work anymore and the opinion piece has been removed altogether. Our responsible editor has chosen to unpublish the article post based on the threats against the author and the writer’s family. / Editor,” SVT tweeted in response to an inquiry from user Peter Sellei.
This revelation proposed strong reactions from Swedish users, who asked why SVT had chosen to put the lid on this story instead of shedding more light on it. Some argued that had the threats come from right-wingers, it would have doubtlessly triggered an outcry about “hate storm.”
“And where were these threats coming from? Yes, from the very same group, which is the biggest threat to Jews in Sweden, as the journalist highlighted — Muslims. But you’ll never dare to go out with it. So go ahead, keep mum, sing kumbaya and pretend it’s raining,” one user tweeted.
“When will SVT do a proper series of reviews about this new societal development? Or is it just Nazis, Nazis and Nazis who get highlighted as a threat to Jews in Sweden? For many years, the Jews have been moving from Malmö because of threats from the city’s Muslims (who are the majority),” another one tweeted.
In Sweden, which has the EU’s seventh largest Jewish diaspora of about 20,000 people, has recently seen a rise in anti-Semitism amid snowballing immigration from predominantly Muslim countries. Previously, members of the Jewish community in Malmö, including rabbis and spiritual leaders, have experienced threats.

Left Party lawmaker Ulla Jelpke slammed the government for hiding information from the parliament about its cooperation with FETO-affiliated groups.
“The government views its cooperation with the associations of Gulen sect so explosive that it is refusing to give an answer arguing that doing so would effect the the functional capability of the intelligence ogranizations,” she told Germany’s international broadcaster DW.
“It seems that the government is cooperating with Gulen exclusively through the intelligence services,” she added.
FETO network
Germany’s tolerance towards the group, and its reluctance to extradite FETO suspects to Turkey, has been a source of tension between the two countries.
Since the 1990s, Gulen’s shadowy group managed to build a large network in Germany, and it claims to have around 70,000 followers in the country.
Around 14,000 people with suspected ties to FETO have also arrived the country, after the foiled coup attempt in Turkey, according to local reports.
FETO members have tried to avoid public criticism in Germany by focusing on “interfaith dialogue” programs and sticking to “moderate” messages.
But former FETO members, who spoke to the German media in recent weeks, stressed that the group has a dual structure, and despite its “democratic” and “moderate” image in public, it has a secretive and strict hierarchy controlled by its ideological leaders.”

Two security experts from the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory drove to San Antonio, Texas, in March 2017 with a sensitive mission: to retrieve dangerous nuclear materials from a nonprofit research lab there.
Their task was to ensure that the radioactive materials did not fall into the wrong hands on the way back to Idaho, where the government maintains a stockpile of nuclear explosive materials for the military and others.

The creation of babies whose DNA has been altered to give them what parents perceive to be the best chances in life has received a cautious green light in a landmark report from a leading UK ethics body.
The Nuffield Council on Bioethics said that changing the DNA of a human embryo could be “morally permissible” if it was in the future child’s interests and did not add to the kinds of inequalities that already divide society.
The report does not call for a change in UK law to permit genetically altered babies, but instead urges research into the safety and effectiveness of the approach, its societal impact, and a widespread debate of its implications.
“It is our view that genome editing is not morally unacceptable in itself,” said Karen Yeung, chair of the Nuffield working group and professor of law, ethics and informatics at the University of Birmingham. “There is no reason to rule it out in principle.”

Underground Unrest: Rash Of Unprovoked Subway Attacks Has New York Straphangers Spooked
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Straphangers across New York were on edge Monday after a recent string of unprovoked attacks in the city’s subway system.
In the most recent case, sources tell CBS2 the alleged assailant now behind bars has been arrested 64 times. He was taken to NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue for a mental health evaluation while one of his victims hopes the city does more to stop a similar attack from happening again.
Pictures from the scene at Columbus Circle appearing to show an agitated homeless man being restrained by several passersby shortly after the Monday morning attack are just the latest example of underground unrest in the Big Apple.
“I was in shock,” one of the victims told CBS2. “I jumped back off the train immediately to try to snap a picture and call 911.”
The woman, who doesn’t wish to be identified, says she took the pictures of the man after he allegedly punched her and two other women on the B train around 10 a.m. as it approached the Midtown station.

Monday, 16 July 2018, is a turning point in the affairs of men. But the lexicon and orthodox canon of Western progressivism aren’t able to frame or describe the event in a useful way. Trump’s critics aren’t having the exploding-head reaction because of what he actually said, but because of what their ears heard him say, through a filter of orthodoxy which they are simply incapable of removing.
We’ve been hearing about the joint Trump-Putin press conference all day. The refrain from every side is the same: Trump was soft on Putin, and he “slammed,” or at least failed to back up, his own intelligence agencies regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.
There is no need to document chapter and verse on all the high-profile figures who have come out to say Trump needs to walk this back. That has been done elsewhere, and I commend examples to your perusal (and here, and here for reactions from Twitter polloi).
But it is far, far more important for you to read what Trump actually said in the press conference (link below). The importance of doing that cannot be overemphasized. I think it is better, in fact, to read what he said, rather than trying to take it in and reflect on it from watching Trump in a video.

“A MAN is fighting for his life after he was airlifted to hospital when he was stabbed in front of shocked tourists in a Leicester Square casino as the bloodshed continues in London.
The victim, who is thought to be in his thirties, was gambling in the Empire Cinema in the tourist hotspot of Leicester Square when he was stabbed at 5pm on Monday.
Police have recovered a weapon following the incident.
The Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Leicester Square at 5.50pm on Monday.

Putting aside the fact this action is totally undemocratic (that’s democratic with a lower-case “c”), this is pure genius.
Congressman Tom Reed, a Republican representative seeking re-election in New York’s 23rd District, grew a little weary of having his campaign signs stolen.
The signs feature the phrase “Extreme Ithaca Liberal,” a shot at the opposition party in the area who have resorted to extreme platforms and now extreme measures to combat Republicans.
And it’s not the first time the signs have disappeared. Volunteers for a Democrat opponent were caught removing signs while still wearing their campaign stickers in 2018. Another woman admitted taking them down earlier this month because they were “rude”.
With a pattern firmly established, Reed’s campaign got clever and installed a GPS tracking device in one of the signs.

With the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the official dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991, NATO assumed that the newly freed countries of Eastern and Central Europe (commonly referred to as the ECE) would join with Western Europe and become both free and prosperous. It was not an entirely reasonable assumption, however: the Russians did not want to accept the end of the Soviet empire; nor were they ready to jettison decades of deep suspicion about the aims of the West, particularly the United States and NATO.
Although the Russians sought economic influence throughout Eastern Europe after the end of the Cold War, they were nevertheless supportive of Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev’s full acceptance of the reunification of Germany and independence for the former members of the Soviet bloc.
Today, Russian “interference” in Eastern and Central Europe — is often described as the invasion of eastern Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula, with little, if any, attention paid to Russian military incursions and cyber-attacks against both Moldova and Georgia. Bad as these attacks are, since further Russian military incursions have not occurred in other areas of Europe, a number of Russia “experts” in the West, such as The Nation’s Stephen F. Cohen, have been arguing that the threat from Moscow is not all that serious. According to such assessments, Russia’s aggression has served to intimidate its neighbors, but not much more than that.

If anyone wanted further proof that no Palestinian leader would ever be able to recognize Israel’s right to exist, it was provided recently in the form of yet another religious decree, or fatwa, issued by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein. It is a fatwa that basically tells Muslims: “We will kill you, punish you in many ways, if we catch you selling land or homes to Jews.”
The fatwa makes it clear that no Muslim is entitled to sell his or her land — or transfer ownership over it — to “enemies,” a reference to Jews. The implications are extremely serious. Anyone who violates this religious opinion or decree will face various forms of punishment, ranging from being boycotted to the death sentence.
The fatwa, which was published by the mufti on July 10, has attracted no attention from the international media or those parties that keep telling us how keen they are about achieving peace between Palestinians and Israel. Human rights organizations around the world do not seem to be bothered at all by such threats against Muslims.

Thousands of Gülen movement followers who fled an ongoing government witch-hunt in Turkey against Gülen followers, have applied for asylum in Germany.
The coup attempt on July 15 killed 249 people and wounded more than a thousand others.
Contrary to accusations made by Erdo?an and the Turkish government against the Gülen movement, the head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Bruno Kahl, on March 18, 2017 said Turkey could not convince them that US-based Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, whose views inspired the movement, was behind the failed coup attempt.”

President Trump set off a roar of outrage when he defied U.S. intelligence agencies to defend Vladimir Putin and Russia against allegations of meddling. Republican lawmakers joined Democrats to condemn the president’s deference to Putin, but his conclusion that the U.S. and Russia are both to blame for the deteriorated relationship is not without defenders.
Take, for example, two American foreign policy experts, Stephen F. Cohen and John Mearsheimer, who both say they agree with Trump on that point, whether you think that makes them Putin’s patsy or not. And they’re both afraid anti-Russia sentiment in the U.S. will tank Trump’s efforts.

A Canadian Pacific freight train derailed in Saint-Polycarpe, near the Quebec-Ontario border, on Monday night, drone footage released on Tuesday showed.
There were no injuries reported after 25 of the 95 rail carriages derailed, according to Canada’s environment ministry.
Two carriages containing propane ran into the river that runs through the municipality, as two other carriages stopped on the riverbank.

Abusing Muslims is banned – but abusing Muslim immigrants could be allowed on the service
Facebook gives special protections to Tommy Robinson and allows people to racially abuse immigrants, according to a new report.
Graphic images and videos of children, violent hate speech and racist content are not immediately or automatically removed from the site, according to footage taken by Channel 4’s Dispatches.
An undercover reporter filmed the people who review content to decide whether it should stay up to be viewed by the public, gaining an unprecedented insight into what is allowed to be posted on the platform.
And it shows that a variety of content remains up on the site, even once it is reported – not only hate speech, but videos depicting child abuse, violent content and self-harm, even if the person shown is suspected of being a child.
It also shows that far-right and racist content is given special protections that stop it being deleted quite so easily. Trainees are shown being told that content that racially abused protected ethnic or religious groups would be removed – but if that abuse is limited to immigrants from those groups, the posts would stay up.
In the footage, moderators are shown explaining that a post targeting Muslims with racist language would be removed, for instance. But if the posts specifically targeted Muslim immigrants, then that could be allowed to stay up because it is a political statement, Facebook has suggested.
It also shows that hate speech and violent content that is slightly more abstract will be allowed. Trainee moderators are shown a cartoon that seems to depict a child being drowned because she is attracted to a “negro” and told that it would probably not be removed from the site, though Facebook has since said that such content violates its hate speech standards.
The findings come as Facebook attempts to clean up its image in the wake of a variety of scandals. As well as the Cambridge Analytica controversy – in which Facebook gave up user data that was then analysed for targeted political advertising – the site has committed to improve the way it screens what content is available on its platform.
The new footage shows the people doing that work, inside Facebook’s largest centre for UK content moderation. Much of that work has been outsourced to other companies, and the Dispatches report centres on one of those external companies.
It shows the training process that those moderators go through. They are shown how to check videos that are reported using Facebook’s tools – which allow users to flag videos that depict graphic violence, child abuse, or other extreme content.
Facebook aims to review all of those reports within 24 hours. But the footage shows that target is often not achieved, with sensitive content such as suicide threats or self-harm potentially going unchecked for days.
Much of the content reported on Facebook is left online even if it depicts violence or other extreme behaviour. And for the most part those reports are not passed onto the police, unless the video is streamed live, Dispatches claimed.
Facebook pages including ones devoted to Tommy Robinson and Britain First were given special protections usually afforded to governments and news organisations. That “shielded” status means that problem content won’t simply be deleted, but will be forwarded on to full-time Facebook employees who will review the content.
Those pages have vast number of followers – Mr Robinson’s page has over 900,000 fans – and moderators speculate that the page is being left up because “they have a lot of followers so they’re generating a lot of revenue for Facebook”.
Facebook admitted that those special protections are in place on Tommy Robinson’s page, and that they had been for Britain First before it was taken down. But it said that the decision was made to ensure that the site did not wrongly take down legitimate political content.
“If the content is indeed violating it will go. I want to be clear this is not a discussion about money, this is a discussion about political speech,” said Richard Allen, Facebook’s vice president of global policy solutions. “People are debating very sensitive issues on Facebook, including issues like immigration. And that political debate can be entirely legitimate.
“I do think having extra reviewers on that when the debate is taking place absolutely makes sense and I think people would expect us to be careful and cautious before we take down their political speech.”
In the documentary, early Facebook investor Roger McNamee claims that the company relies on that extreme content to ensure that its users stay engaged with the site.
“It’s the really extreme, really dangerous form of content that attracts the most highly engaged people on the platform,” he said. “Facebook understood that it was desirable to have people spend more time on site if you’re going to have an advertising based business, you need them to see the ads so you want them to spend more time on the site.
“Facebook has learned that the people on the extremes are the really valuable ones because one person on either extreme can often provoke 50 or 100 other people and so they want as much extreme content as they can get.”
Those accusations were backed by senior politicians. “These revelations about Facebook’s content moderation are alarming, but not surprising. Our Committee have been pressing Facebook for months for information during our fake news inquiry on how it deals with extreme content and stamps out fake news, but they don’t behave like a company who welcome independent scrutiny,” said Julian Knight MP, member of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
“Facebook has recently committed to reducing fake news and improving privacy on its platform, which is welcome. But they don’t seem as committed to sacrificing profits made from extreme content as is demonstrated by Channel 4’s investigation.”
Mr Allen denied accusations that the company relies on such extreme content for its revenues.
“Shocking content does not make us more money, that’s just a misunderstanding of how the system works,” he told Dispatches. “People come to Facebook for a safe secure experience to share content with their family and friends.”
The full documentary – Facebook: Secrets of the Social Network – will be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on 17 July.
Facebook admitted that the footage showed behaviour that was not up to its standards. It has made a number of changes since it was made aware of the allegations to ensure that the problems are fixed, it said.
“It’s clear that some of what is shown in the program does not reflect Facebook’s policies or values, and falls short of the high standards we expect,” said Richard Allen, Facebook’s vice president of global policy solutions, in a statement provided to The Independent.
“We take these mistakes in some of our training processes and enforcement incredibly seriously and are grateful to the journalists who brought them to our attention. Where we know we have made mistakes, we have taken action immediately. We are providing additional training and are working to understand exactly what happened so we can rectify it.”

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have used kites, balloons and flaming condoms to try to start wildfires across the border in Israel — and now a bird, according to Israeli authorities.
A falcon, outfitted with a harness tied to a steel wire with flammable material at the end, was found hanging in a tree near the Gaza border, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said in a statement Tuesday. Inspectors putting out a fire nearby found the dead bird Monday afternoon, the authority said.
This is the first time an animal has been used to ignite fires during weekly border protests that began in late March, according to the authority. The organization said it’s considering filing a complaint under international treaties over the use of an animal for what it called terrorism.
