    • I’m not at all convinced by this body-language pseudo-expertise.
      It’s wildly presumptuous, like a first-year resident shrink. Or a freshly minted FBI special agent.

      I’ve seen Americans serve it up on Middle East Arabs and Japanese. Go figure – body language the single most culture-specific dimension in communication.

    Chilling MH370 discovery about how pilot flew undetected, according to aviation experts

    The mysterious route taken by doomed flight MH370 before the plane vanished with 239 souls on-board has been re-examined by aviation experts who claim to have made chilling new discoveries.

    For more than four years the world has grappled with questions over how the Boeing 777 airliner vanished into thin air en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur.

    And now several experts who have worked to determine what brought the plane down say they have more answers.

    According to Senior Boeing 777 pilot and instructor Simon Hardy, MH370 was used in a murder-suicide mission by Captain Zaharie Amad Shah, who deliberately flew the aircraft over his hometown of Penang for an “emotional goodbye”, before ditching it in the Southern Indian Ocean “where it could never be found”.

    In a 60 Minutes episode that aired on Sunday night, Hardy said he made a discovery by reconstructing Zaharie’s flight plan from the military radar. He said Zaharie had avoided detection of the plane by either Malaysian or Thai military radar by flying along the border, crossing in and out of each country’s airspace.

    It was also on the border that the plane’s transponder suddenly turned off.

    “As the aircraft went across Thailand and Malaysia, it runs down the border, which is wiggling underneath, meaning it’s going in and out of those two countries, which is where their jurisdictions are,” Hardy told the program.

    “So both of the controllers aren’t bothered about this mysterious aircraft. Cause it’s, ‘Oh, it’s gone. It’s not in our space anymore’.”

    Hardy said the manoeuvres were clearly deliberate.

    “If you were commissioning me to do this operation and try and make a 777 disappear, I would do exactly the same thing,” he said.

    National security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday that North Korea’s denuclearization is not negotiable — including non-nuclear weapons.

    “Denuclearization is absolutely at the core of it and it means not just nuclear weapons,” Bolton said on ABC’s “This Week.”

    “North Korea has also previously agreed … to give up its uranium reprocessing capabilities, we’ve got ballistic missiles on the table, we’ve got to look at chemical and biological weapons.

    Bolton noted that North Korea had previously agreed to decommission its uranium reprocessing capabilities and that the U.S. has ballistic missiles “on the table.” But, he said, the U.S. had a range of things to discuss, floating the idea of looking at chemical and biological weapons.

    “We want to see the denuclearization process so completely underway that it is irreplaceable,” Bolton said.

  11. At least 16 Palestinians in Gaza have been shot dead by Israeli troops in some of the bloodiest clashes for weeks, Palestinian officials say.

    It comes ahead of the controversial opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, which has infuriated Palestinians.

    They see it as clear US backing for Israeli rule over the whole city, whose eastern part Palestinians lay claim to.

    Top US officials, including President Donald Trump’s daughter and her husband, will attend the event.

    Gaza’s Islamist rulers, Hamas, have led mass protests in a “Great March of Return” for the past six weeks. Israel says demonstrators are trying to breach the border fence.

    The Hamas-run health ministry said a 14-year-old boy had been among those killed on Monday, and 500 people had been injured.

  13. The Ink Is Almost Dry on Italy’s 15% Flat Tax Rate

    Italy’s populist duo has all but completed a governing plan that includes a flat tax as low as 15 percent, a guaranteed income for the poor and a lower retirement age as they prepare to seek a green light from the president on Monday.

    Luigi Di Maio, 31, of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement said he and Matteo Salvini, 45, of the anti-immigrant League have refined the last details of their “Contract for the Government of Change” in a late evening meeting in Milan on Sunday, news agency Ansa reported.

    President Sergio Mattarella summoned Di Maio and Salvini for separate talks on Monday, the head of state’s office said in an emailed statement. Mattarella will meet Di Maio at 4.30 p.m., and Salvini at 6 p.m.

    Campaign pledges about the spending and tax plans have fueled investor concerns that a populist administration could jeopardize state finances and slow growth in the euro zone’s third-biggest economy — which is already the most sluggish among countries that share the common currency. Plans to reconsider treaties with Europe also prompted worries that Italy could undermine efforts for EU reform.

    The parties’ economic program costs between 65 billion euros ($78 billion) and 100 billion euros, according to an estimate in newspaper Corriere della Sera on Monday, adding that the flat tax is the most expensive measure.

    The two leaders continue to keep quiet about whom they will nominate as prime minister. Salvini would like economist Giulio Sapelli, a former board member of energy giant Eni, while Di Maio proposes Giuseppe Conte, a law professor at Florence University, Corriere said.

  14. China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier starts sea trials

    China’s first domestically-built aircraft carrier set sail Sunday for sea trials, another important development as the country strives to build a powerful, modern blue-water navy.

    China’s new carrier, built by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, set out from Dalian Shipyard in Northeastern China’s Liaoning Province Sunday, the country’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reports. The sea trials will “test the reliability and stability of the carrier’s power system and other equipment,” the report explained.

    The unnamed aircraft carrier will be the second carrier to join China’s naval forces. The Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, is a Soviet heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser China bought over two decades ago and re-purposed to serve as the country’s first aircraft carrier. The vessel was commissioned into the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in 2012. It was declared combat ready four years later.

    The Liaoning is already operational and has taken part in exercises designed to flaunt China’s growing naval power. As is, each of these three sea forces — the navy, the coast guard, and the maritime militia — is the largest of its type, possessing more ships than any other nation, according to expert analysis.

    Whoopi Goldberg apparently doesn’t like Gina Haspel, Donald Trump’s pick to head up the CIA, and suggested earlier in the week that President Trump and former Vice President Dick Cheney might consider undergoing waterboarding themselves — you know, just to see what it’s like.

    “I would like you to try it,” Goldberg said. “I think people who have actually been tortured who are saying that this is not a good thing — you should listen to them because you have never been tortured, and neither has Dick Cheney.”

    But Dr. James Mitchell, a former CIA interrogator, countered with a suggestion of his own:

    The next time there’s credible intelligence of another catastrophic attack … she can go to some unsafe place in the world and interrogate the terrorists and I’ll stay back home.

    There are stupid liberal tricks, and then there are stupid liberal tricks. The latest is a lawsuit filed against the state of Colorado … by the Colorado River.

    Because the legal filing would become soggy and hard to read if the river itself wrote it, the waterway had a self-appointed amanuensis in the persons of Deep Green Resistance, an environmental group that believes rivers deserve human rights.

    In its filing, DGR wrote that “environmental law has failed to protect the natural environment because it accepts the status of nature and ecosystems as property.” The logical remedy therefore is to accord nature and ecosystems the same rights as people.

    “Since 2016, there have now been 45 separate attacks across seven European countries: the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, and Finland have all seen attacks,” he recalled.

    “This unprecedented tempo of attack planning shows no sign of abating,” Parker confessed.

    “In the UK alone, since the Westminster attack in March last year, with the police we have thwarted a further twelve Islamist terror plots,” he revealed.

    “Twelve occasions where we have good reason to believe a terrorist attack would otherwise have taken place in our country,” he repeated, to drive the seriousness of the disrupted plots home.

    “That brings the total number of disrupted attacks in the UK since 2013 to 25.”

    Successful terror attacks, including the Westminster Bridge attack, the Manchester Arena suicide bombing, and the London Bridge and Borough Market attack, raise the tally still further.

    “This upshift in threat is of course driven by [the Islamic State’s] murderous ideology. While [the Islamic State] has now lost its false caliphate in its strongholds in Syria and Iraq, tackling the group as a movement will require sustained international focus for years to come,” he added.

    “As I speak today they are seeking to regroup, and the threat seems likely to persist.”

    Fully 23,000 active extremists or former persons of interest are known to be present in the United Kingdom, including hundreds of Islamic State volunteers who have returned to the country from Syria and Iraq — most of whom have not faced prosecution.”

    “German authorities have charged a Somali man who allegedly was a member of the foreign extremist group al-Shabab and is accused of attempted murder and assistance to murder.

    Federal prosecutors said Monday that 20-year-old, identified only as Abduqaadir A., joined the group in 2012 in Mogadishu, and was trained to use pistols and hand grenades. During his training, he accompanied other al-Shabab members to a mosque where they assassinated a person with three shots to the head.

    He was later assigned to kill a Somali government employee with the help of another group member at a restaurant. There, he shot several times at the man, wounding but not killing him. He was therefore arrested by al-Shabab until he managed to flee in October 2012.

    Prosecutors say the accused came to Germany in June 2014, and was arrested in February.”

    “May marked the first “white privilege” conference held by Ryerson University with hundreds of academics and others gathering at the Toronto-based institution.

    The week-long event, which took place from May 9th to May 12th, was largely organised by Ryerson’s first vice-president of equity and community inclusion Denise O’Neil Green.

    Green told Canadian media her definition of “white privilege” was “an unearned benefit or ‘perk’ that one receives simply because of their skin colour. A more multi-layered way of looking at it is that white privilege operates in terms of a system that benefits particular groups over others”, the Toronto Star reports.

    Another major figure who took part in the event was Rinaldo Walcott, an associate professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, who has been a vocal supporter of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and participates in the “Faculty for Palestine” group.

    When asked about his response to people who say white privilege does not exist, Walcott dismissed criticism saying that white working class people have an easier time progressing up the socio-economic ladder than black people or indigenous people.

    “White privilege is not about demarcating a particular racial group. It’s pointing to ways in which an already demarcated racial group — in fact, a group of people who have historically marked other people as “not white” — has, through violence and other means, built a society in which they accrued the most privilege,” Walcott said.

    “White privilege” has not been limited to academic debate in Canada in recent years with government institutions being commanded to make themselves “more diverse” and even implementing hiring policies in which white Canadians are not welcome.

    Earlier this year, the public broadcaster of the French-speaking province of Quebec declared that the public sector was “too white” as the number of minority residents in Quebec has almost doubled from 2001 to 2016.

    In the western province of British Columbia, school administrators attempted to address and apologise for their privilege with a poster campaign in which Superintendent of Schools Teresa Downs said: “I have unfairly benefited from the colour of my skin. White privilege is not acceptable.””

    The victims were killed in the former Libyan stronghold of Sirte and recovered in October after the area where they were buried was recaptured from the terrorist group.

    The Coptic Christians were beheaded on a beach in February 2015 wearing orange jumpsuits, according to a video posted by ISIS.

    Their bodies will be flown from the western city of Misrata to Egypt, a Libyan official said, adding that there was an additional victim from Ghana.

    A total of 21 people were beheaded in the incident.”

    Theresa May, eying a post-Brexit free trade deal with Turkey, as well as security cooperation over returning foreign fighters, has taken a strategic bet on Turkey that has led to criticism of the Conservatives willingness to overlook Erdo?an’s increasingly authoritarian rule in pursuit of commercial agreements.

    Nick Clegg, the former Liberal Democrat leader, picked out the environment secretary, Michael Gove, accusing him of “a fawning silence” over Erdo?an’s visit even though he had promised Brexit would give the UK a chance to promote human rights under the banner of Global Britain.

    In his talks with May, Erdo?an indicated he was likely to press the UK to do more to hand over any exiles that he regards as linked to the coup that nearly toppled his government in 2015.

    He said the US has forfeited its role as the mediator in the Middle East and claimed the US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem “did not abide by international law or UN decisions”.

    He said: “America has chosen to be part of the problem and not the solution so they have lost their role as international mediator. We cannot stop feeling like being in dark days of pre-World War II.”

    On Iran he said was compelled to point out that Iran had stuck to the terms of the deal reached in 2015 with Barack Obama, and it was vital that there was a continuum on such deals.

    Erdo?an also vowed he will continue to clear Syrian Kurds from his border in the wake of the Turkish capture of the Kurdish-held town of Afrin.   30. UK and France ‘determined’ to save Iran deal

    France and Britain on Monday said they were “determined” to save the Iranian nuclear deal, despite the United States pulling out last week.

    Speaking during a visit to London, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also condemned as “intolerable” comments by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov after a knife-attack in Paris on Saturday.

    Kadyrov had said that France bore “full responsibility” for the attack, which French police said was carried out by Chechnya-born French national Khamzan Azimov.

    “We do not need lessons from a dictator who does not respect the… rule of law in his own country, and who also knows very well that there are thousands of Chechens fighting on the side of” Islamic State, Le Drian told AFP.

    The attacker went on a stabbing spree in a busy district of central Paris on Saturday evening before police shot him dead, killing one person and seriously wounding four more.

    Following talks with British counterpart Boris Johnson, Le Drian also spoke about the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group (China, the US, France, Britain, Russia and Germany).

    The agreement lifted international sanctions in exchange for Tehran promising to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors.

    “Our position is one of determination and unity, of will to keep this agreement alive,” Le Drian said.

    “The US leaving an international agreement does not mean that the international agreement is null and void,” said the French politician, on the eve of a Brussels meeting between the Iranian, French, British and German foreign ministers.

    “We remain in the agreement and we want to keep it alive, as long as Iran respects it”, he added, describing the agreement as “win-win”.

    “Our position is… united with the German position,” continued the minister.

    British counterpart Johnson said the “UK and France are determined to conserve the essence of the Iran nuclear deal.

    “Tomorrow in Brussels, we are going to have a conversation about what we can do to help UK firms and help European firms have confidence that they can still do business.

    “I’m not going to pretend to you now that it will be easy but we are determined to do that,” he added, saying it was “vital that we continue to engage with the US”.

    Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif on Monday in Moscow said he wanted “assurances” from the deal’s signatories that they would continue to abide by its terms, especially on sanctions relief for Tehran.

    He was in Moscow on Monday following talks in Beijing over the weekend.

  33. Reminder: FBI Covered Up Bernie Supporter’s Mass Shooting of Republicans

    From a good BuzzFeed piece on the attempted mass shooting of congressional Republicans.

    But many lawmakers are mad, or frustrated, or saddened, at how quickly the story disappeared from the headlines given that the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, targeted Republicans. The FBI concluded the shooting wasn’t politically motivated — suicide by cop, they told members after an investigation.

    But Hodgkinson carried a list of names of lawmakers in his pocket: Mo Brooks, Jim Jordan, Trent Franks, Scott DesJarlais, Jeff Duncan, and Morgan Griffith. The list included their office numbers and short physical descriptions. He’d recorded video of the field in April of of that year — a sign, the prosecutor wrote in his official report, that Hodgkinson “had already selected Simpson field as a potential target as early as April 2017.”

    His social media was filled with Bernie and anti-Republican content.

    Obama once called slavery, “America’s original sin”. Jim Wallis, a member of Obama’s White House Faith Council, has a book out titled, “America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege”.

    Accusations of sinfulness usually tell us more about the values of the accuser than the accused.

    If racism is America’s original sin, then its redemption lies in anti-racism. For liberal theologians, Christian and Jewish, who no longer believe in the traditional biblical sins, racism is a godsend. It provides the moral drama of damnation and redemption, confession and absolution, in a way that is compatible with the larger secular culture and their own political ambitions.

    Fighting racism isn’t just a cause, it’s a religion. And all that remains of major religious denominations.

    The most resonantly dramatic events for Christian and Jewish liberal denominations remain the fight against slavery and the struggles of the civil rights movement. They revisit and recreate them ceaselessly. And each protest movement, whether it’s Muslim migrants at airports, illegal aliens from El Salvador at the border or Black Lives Matter racists at coffee shops, is a religious revival experience.

  38. Letter from alleged Islamic group threatens small town beaches in Ontario

    KAWARTHA LAKES-A letter, claiming to be from the Islamic Revolutionary Force, sent to some media outlets, threatens to “destroy your beaches from Toronto to North Bay.”

    “We do this because you reject Islam and follow the Great Satan. Infidels you allow your women to disgracefully, shamelessly parade around your beaches all but naked!” The letter states in part.

    On May 11, 2018 Huntsville OPP were made aware of a suspicious letter that took credit for contaminating beaches in the Muskoka area and threatened other small town beaches and their tourism industry. “We have started with the Muskoka’s and other tourist destinations. Your Northern towns are extremely easy targets, unlike cities.”

    In late April, the Towns of Bracebridge and Gravenhurst received reports of some hazardous materials being found at several area beaches.

    In response to the materials being found, both municipalities temporarily closed the beach areas and initiated a clean-up of the hazardous materials found at beach locations within the municipalities.

    Huntsville OPP along with the assistance of the Huntsville Crime Unit are investigating the origin of the letter. Huntsville OPP says they will utilize all required resources to determine the validity of the claims that were made.

    The letter also stated “Yes we cannot pull off anything like 9-11. But we can destroy your tourist industry, hurt your people, de-rail your trains, poison your water supply, start devastating forest fires….”

    Police say further information will be provided only as the investigation continues and the OPP will work closely with any community should any claim be identified that has the potential to compromise the safety of the public.

    While Qatari money has bought Al Jazeera a lot of credibility, the fact remains that it’s not a news organization. It’s an influence operation by Qatar.

    Twitter has suspended me again. The last time was in January, 2018. Strangely, they thought they could oust me without citing any particular tweet of mine. I challenged them a number of times, demanding why they suspended me, and every response was that my suspension stood. A number of my friends and supporters caused an online backlash, demanding that Twitter restore my account, and after a few days, Twitter wrote me that my suspension was a “mistake”. It was definitely a mistake, as I’ve never threatened anyone, and I criticize “hateful conduct”, I don’t engage in it. But I figured that they would pull it again, and they have.

    Now, they accuse me of “hateful conduct”, and like last time, they’re ignoring my challenges to my suspension, replying that my suspension stands. But unlike last time, they cited a particular tweet/reply of mine to someone on Twitter who took exception to my criticism of Marvel Comics and their Muslim superhero character.     When George Deukmejian recently passed away at 89, it came as a reminder that California’s governor has not always been named Brown. George Deukmejian first served as an assemblyman, senator, and attorney general. In 1982, the Republican defeated Democrat Tom Bradley, major of Los Angeles, to become the Golden State’s 35th governor.

    George Deukmejian ended his two terms in 1991 and did not seek higher office. His passing also came as a reminder that, for the left, history is something to be created, not studied. Consider the May 9 Sacramento Bee editorial “On the legacy of George Deukmejian and what governance used to mean.”

    Deukmejian “campaigned on the law-and-order credo that was his party’s hallmark.” Actually, it was a response to the pro-criminal stance of the previous governor, Jerry Brown, who had already made California a sanctuary state.

    During his first term, American Indian Movement (AIM) founder Dennis Banks was convicted of riot and assault for a 1973 courthouse gun battle in South Dakota. Banks fled to California, and governor Jerry Brown, untroubled by the fugitive’s indulgence of gun violence, refused to extradite him. When Deukmejian won election as governor, Banks bolted the state, but the AIM fugitive was hardly the extent of Brown’s legacy on crime.

    A recent article titled “Passages from the Bible discovered behind Qur’an manuscript” is a reminder that for centuries Islam has been literally and figuratively erasing Christianity.

    The report tells of how an eighth century Koran was found to be written over a Christian book, possibly the Bible: “French scholar Dr Eléonore Cellard … noticed that, appearing faintly behind the Arabic script, were Coptic letters. She contacted Christie’s [an auction house], and they managed to identify the Coptic text as coming from the Old Testament’s Book of Deuteronomy—part of the Torah and the Christian Old Testament.”

    What this means, and how Western scholars understand it, are two different things: “This is a very important discovery for the history of the Qur’an and early Islam,” said Cellard. “We have here a witness of cultural interactions between different religious communities.” Christie’s specialist Romain Pingannaud concurs: “It shows the contact between communities in the first centuries of Islam.”

    What is euphemistically referred to as “cultural interactions between different religious communities” and “the contact between communities in the first centuries of Islam” is a reference to the near cultural annihilation of Coptic Christian civilization by Islam on the former’s own homeland. The closest the report gets to this simple fact is by saying:

    A man with schizophrenia who attacked soldiers at a military recruitment centre in Toronto has been acquitted of terror-related charges and found not criminally responsible for lesser offences due to mental illness.

    Judge Ian MacDonnell says Ayanle Hassan Ali’s actions in May 2016 do not fit the intended scope of Canadian terrorism laws.

    Ali had pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, all for the benefit or at the direction of a terror organization.

    His lawyers had argued that because he committed his actions alone and had never been in contact with any terror groups, he should be found not guilty on the terror charges. They also argued he should be found not criminally responsible for the lesser included offences of attempted murder, assault and weapons offences.

    The prosecution argued that Canadian terror laws could apply to Ali because he acted as a “terrorist group of one.”

    The judge ruled against the Crown’s argument, saying the federal government’s intention behind terrorism laws must be taken into account.

    On March 14, 2016, Ali entered a Canadian Forces recruitment office in north Toronto at 4900 Yonge Street, armed with a knife, and attacked uniformed soldiers, leaving at least two with minor injuries. He was then overpowered and subdued.

    According to an agreed statement of facts presented by the Crown and defence at trial, Ali repeatedly punched and slashed at one soldier, leaving the man with a three-inch gash on his arm.

    Terror laws not intended for ‘lone wolf acts,’ judge says

    Ali tried to stab or slash three other military personnel — one of whom was left with bruises and a “small, superficial nick” — before being subdued, the statement said.

    “The attack was motivated by the defendant’s radical religious and ideological beliefs but there is no dispute that the formation of those beliefs was in large part precipitated by mental disorder,” the judge says in his decision.

    On Monday, MacDonnell said there is no evidence “of any connection” between Ali and any other person or group in relation to the attack.

    The judge said anti-terror laws were not intended for “lone wolf acts.”

      TORONTO — A man with schizophrenia who attacked soldiers at a military recruitment centre in Toronto has been acquitted of terror-related charges and found not criminally responsible for lesser offences due to mental illness.

      Judge Ian MacDonnell said Ayanle Hassan Ali’s actions in May 2016 did not fit the intended scope of Canadian terrorism laws.

      “While it is common ground that the defendant had become radicalized, there is no evidence of any connection between him and any other person or group in relation to the attack,” MacDonnell said in his decision Monday, noting that Ali’s radical religious and ideological beliefs were largely the result of his mental illness.

      It was not parliament’s intent when crafting Canadian terror laws to cover “lone wolf” crimes like the ones committed by Ali, MacDonnell said.

      MacDonnell ordered that Ali remain at a forensic psychiatry unit in Hamilton — where he has been in custody for most of the past two years — until an Ontario Review Board, comprised of mental health and legal specialists, can determine his course of care. The board has 45 days to hold an initial hearing in the case, in accordance with Ontario law.

      Ali’s lawyers said outside court that their client never should have faced terror charges.

      “This was a case where the Crown overreached,” defence attorney Nader Hasan said. “They had someone who they thought looked the part of the terrorist when, in reality, they had someone who committed a terrible, terrible act who is mentally ill and they should have proceeded in that fashion, rather than overreaching for terrorism.”

      Ali appeared in court in the same grey suit and white, checked shirt he has worn on every day of the trial. Sitting in the accused’s box, he kept his head bowed and his hands clasped together.

      He had pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, all for the benefit or at the direction of a terror organization.

      His lawyers had argued that, because he committed his actions alone and had never been in contact with any terror groups, he should be found not guilty on the terror charges and ruled “not criminally responsible” for the lesser included offences of attempted murder, assault and weapons offences — a designation that acknowledges the accused committed an offence but, as a result of a mental disorder, could not appreciate the consequences, legality or moral wrongness of their actions.

      MacDonnell said he agreed with two psychiatrists who testified at trial that Ali should be found not criminally responsible for his actions.

      The prosecution argued that Canadian terror laws could apply to Ali because he acted as a “terrorist group of one.”

      The 2016 incident at a north Toronto military recruitment centre left at least two soldiers with minor injuries.
