TOKYO — North Korea could be taking preliminary steps to close its nuclear test site, according to new satellite images that suggest Kim Jong Un might be making good on one of the surprising pledges he’s made over the past month.
Or, he’s making the rest of the world think he is by arranging a performance for the satellites that pass overhead.

Peace in North Korea Could Cost $2 Trillion If History Is a Guide
How much would it cost to keep the peace on the Korean Peninsula? Around $2 trillion over ten years.
That’s according to Stephen Jen and Joana Freire at Eurizon SLJ Capital Ltd. in London who estimated what resources would be needed to ensure a denuclearized North Korea is economically viable. They drew on the example of Germany’s unification, noting that transfers from the West to East totaled more than 1.2 trillion euros, or around 1.7 trillion euros using today’s value.
By population, the relative size of North Korea to South Korea is meaningfully larger than East Germany was to West Germany. North Korea is also much much underdeveloped compared to East Germany, which had a well established industry base.
Will Iraq ‘Lean West’ or ‘Lean Iran’?

BBC – Teenage girl ‘plotted British Museum grenade terror attack’
A teenage girl plotted a gun and grenade attack at the British Museum after her attempts to become a jihadi bride were thwarted, a court has heard.
Safaa Boular was 17 when she allegedly decided to be a “martyr” after her Islamic State fighter fiancé was killed in Syria, the Old Bailey was told.
Ms Boular, now 18, denies two counts of preparing acts of terrorism.
Her sister Rizlaine Boular, 21, has admitted planning an attack with knives in Westminster.
She was given assistance and support by her mother, Mina Dich, the jury was told.
Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC said Safaa Boular, who lived with her mother in Vauxhall, London, wanted to “unleash violence and terror in the heart of London”.
But Joel Bennathan QC, representing Ms Boular, said the teenager had been “sexually groomed” and “groomed to be radicalised” online by IS fighter Naweed Hussain.
He said her family had “encouraged” and “celebrated” it.
Mr Atkinson said she declared her love for Hussain in August 2016 after three months of chatting on social media.
The prosecutor told jurors she wanted to join Hussain in Syria where they would wear suicide belts and, in Hussain’s words, “depart the world holding hands and taking others with them”.
The court heard Rizlaine Boular had also tried to go to Syria two years before.
‘Cultural jewel’
After Safaa Boular’s plan was uncovered, she allegedly switched her attention to Britain, contacting Hussain by phone through encrypted Telegram chat.
But British security services had deployed officers to engage in online communication with the pair, jurors heard.
Mr Atkinson said: “It was clear that Hussain had been planning an act of terrorism with Safaa Boular in which she could engage if she remained in this country. Both Hussain and Safaa Boular talked of a planned ambush involving grenades and or firearms.”
She also told an officer posing as an IS fighter that all she needed was a “car and a knife to get what I want to achieve”, the court heard.
Mr Atkinson said: “Based on her preparation and discussion, it appears she planned to launch an attack against members of the public selected largely at random in the environs of that cultural jewel and most popular of tourist attractions, the British Museum in central London.”
‘Chilling intentions’
An attack would have created at least “widespread panic” and was intended to cause injury and death, it was claimed.
When she learned Hussain had been killed in April 2017, Ms Boular’s determination was strengthened, the court heard.
But within days, she was charged with planning to go to Syria so was unable to carry out her “chilling intentions”, the prosecutor said.
He said: “That those intentions were not just chilling but sincere and determined is demonstrated by the fact that she did not abandon them even when she was unable to put them into effect herself.
‘Carry torch forward’
“Rather, she sought to encourage her sister Rizlaine to carry the torch forward in her stead.”
In calls to her sister from jail, Safaa Boular referenced an Alice in Wonderland-themed tea party which was code for an attack, the court heard.
Mr Atkinson told jurors the older sibling had admitted preparing acts of terrorism.
Rizlaine Boular spent three days carrying out reconnaissance of major landmarks in Westminster and bought knives and a rucksack, the court heard.
Based on her reconnaissance and discussion, it appears she planned a knife attack in Westminster, Mr Atkinson said.
She was arrested on 27 April last year, the day of the planned attack, the court heard.
Safaa Boular’s trial continues.

“A WOULD-BE jihadi bride planned to “unleash terror in the heart of London”, a court heard yesterday. Safaa Boular even gave a codename to her planned attack, the “Alice In Wonderland” tea party.
The girl was just 17 when she decided to martyr herself in a grenade and gun assault on the British Museum.
She had earlier planned to travel to Syria and marry her Islamic State fiance, Naweed Hussain, 32, who had groomed her online, jurors were told.
The two had never met but were going to blow themselves up in a suicide attack, wanting to “depart the world holding hands and take others with them in an act of terrorism”.
However Hussain, a British Pakistani who joined IS in Syria in June 2015, was killed there last year.
Grenade So Boular then planned to “unleash violence and terror in the heart of London”, said Duncan Atkinson, QC, prosecuting.
Hussain had already trained Boular online. She talked before his death of a gun and grenade attack but he allegedly told her to get a knife to slash victims outside the British Museum.
“All you need is a car and a knife to get what I want to achieve,” he reportedly said.
Boular was arrested for allegedly trying to travel to Syria last April, the court heard. But while in custody, she urged her older sister Rizlaine, 21, to “carry the torch forward in her stead” and launch a knife attack at the Palace of Westminster.
In phone calls from jail, she talked about having an “Alice In Wonderland” themed tea party, allegedly code for a terror attack, the jury heard.
But on April 27 last year, the day of the proposed Westminster attack, police arrested Rizlaine Boular, of Clerkenwell, central London. She has since admitted planning an attack, the jury was told. Safaa Boular, now 18, of Vauxhall, south London, denies two counts of preparing acts of terrorism.
Joel Bennathan, QC, defending, told jurors: “She was a child who was sexually groomed, someone who was groomed to be radicalised.”

Gazans rally near Israel border in blockade-busting campaign
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza activists burned tires near the sealed border with Israel on Friday in a seventh weekly protest aimed at shaking off a decade-old blockade of their territory. Israeli soldiers fired tear gas volleys from the other side of the border fence.

Saudi tests siren after Yemen rebels fire new missiles
Riyadh (AFP) – Saudi Arabia said Thursday it tested a new siren system for the capital Riyadh and oil-rich Eastern Province, the day after Yemeni rebels fired three ballistic missiles at the kingdom.
The Saudi civil defence posted a video on its official site of the alarm system being tested.
It said in a statement the system was designed to “face risks of all kinds” and alert the population “in case of emergency”.
Yemen’s Iran-allied Huthi rebels have in recent months ramped up missile attacks against neighbouring Saudi Arabia, which leads a military coalition against them.

More than a year later, that’s becoming ever harder for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. A slew of recent media reports showed that China’s Communist Party was covertly meddling with media, universities and lawmakers, prompting a public outcry.
Turnbull responded by backing new legislation to clamp down on foreign interference in politics and business, which may be put to a vote in the coming weeks. In December, he used broken Mandarin to paraphrase a quote attributed to Chairman Mao Zedong during China’s founding, saying “the Australian people stand up and assert their sovereignty.”

Iran says Syria has every right to defend itself against Israel: TV
ANKARA (Reuters) – Iran on Friday supported Syria’s right to defend itself against aggression from Israel, state TV reported, accusing others of remaining silent over the attacks on Tehran’s key regional ally.
“Iran strongly condemns …(Israel’s) attacks on Syria. The international community’s silence encourages Israel’s aggression. Syria has every right to defend itself,” the broadcaster quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying.
Israel said it had attacked nearly all of Iran’s military infrastructure in Syria on Thursday after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeli-held territory for the first time, in the most extensive military exchange ever between the two adversaries.
The confrontation came two days after President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 multinational agreement aimed it curbing Iran’s nuclear program.
Tehran and its allied Shi’ite Muslim militias back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Since its Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran has refused to recognize Israel.

Russia, after Netanyahu visit, backs off Syria S-300 missile supplies
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia is not in talks with the Syrian government about supplying advanced S-300 ground-to-air missiles and does not think they are needed, the Izvestia daily cited a top Kremlin aide as saying on Friday, in an apparent U-turn by Moscow.
The comments, by Vladimir Kozhin, an aide to President Vladimir Putin who oversees Russian military assistance to other countries, follow a visit to Moscow by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week, who has been lobbying Putin hard not to transfer the missiles.
Russia last month hinted it would supply the weapons to President Bashar al-Assad, over Israeli objections, after Western military strikes on Syria. The Mueller probe hasn’t been getting very far trying to connect Trump nefariously with Russian oligarchs. It’s almost as tough a proposition as identifying the right Michael Cohen.
But the media got giddy a couple of days ago when the New York Times reported that in 2017, “the” Michael Cohen had received a payment of $500,000 from the investment firm Columbus Nova. Columbus Nova, a U.S. firm, is owned by the Renova Group, whose chairman is Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, reputed like every oligarch worthy of the name to be close to Vladimir Putin.
Oddly enough, in spite of money going from a Renova subsidiary to Michael Cohen in 2017, Trump’s Treasury Department placed Vekselberg on a sanctions list in April 2018, as punishment for Russian meddling attempts in the 2016 election. Vekselberg is now suffering the inconvenience of some $1.5-2 billion in blocked assets.

The latest intel leak is designed to block a House subpoena.
The mix of intelligence, politics and media can be a hall of mirrors, as we are seeing in the brawl over the Trump campaign, the FBI and Russia. Witness the leak and spin concerning Congress’s latest request for documents from the Justice Department.
Late Tuesday the Washington Post published a story with the headline “Secret intelligence source who aided Mueller probe is at center of latest clash between Nunes and Justice Department.” The story reports that House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes recently sent a classified letter and subpoena to the Justice Department demanding information about a “top secret intelligence source.”
The story’s bias is that Mr. Nunes—you know, a nasty House Republican—is threatening to compromise national security. Yet the article itself discloses details that suggest the Post already knows who this “top secret” source is. For example, the source is a “U.S. citizen,” has been an informant for both “the CIA and FBI,” and has provided information that was given to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.
The story also says intelligence officials fear that outing the source could “damage relationships with other countries,” suggesting the source has worked overseas. And the story says the “role of the intelligence source” could further provoke Republicans who have accused Justice and the FBI of engaging in “misuse of their surveillance power”—hinting that the government may have used the source to snoop on the Trump campaign.
As it happens, our Kimberley Strassel broke the news of the Nunes letter and subpoena in her column last Friday, stating only that he was “demanding documents related to a new line of inquiry.” Two sources confirmed the news, though we were not shown the letter (which is classified) or the subpoena. Rather, a spokeswoman for the Department of Justice sent us a letter responding to the House that revealed that the subpoena was related to a “specific individual.” And now the Washington Post has been given more details.
We can’t say who talked to the Post, but with leaks it’s always useful to see who benefits. In this case the Post story was clearly spun to justify the DOJ’s noncompliance with the House subpoena, and it also reports on a White House-DOJ discussion that included only a few individuals. Readers can figure out who had the political motive and knowledge to leak.
For the record, a spokeswoman says in an email that the Justice Department “did not provide any comment or background information to the Washington Post,” and that the response letter she sent us revealing other information about the subpoena was “determined to be non-classified and appropriate.”
Yet somebody who doesn’t want to cooperate with Congress leaked to the Post, and in the process left a trail of details describing the very source whose name the leakers say must be protected from disclosure to Congress. Who exactly is putting that source at risk? We now have an idea who this government informant is, though no one in Congress has provided or confirmed to us the name.
All of this underscores that Justice should be compelled to cooperate with this latest House subpoena. Judging by the Post story, everyone in Washington will soon know the exploits of this “top secret” source except for Members of Congress who are trying to understand what happened during the 2016 campaign.
Last summer Mr. Nunes subpoenaed information related to the FBI’s monitoring of the Trump campaign. Justice and the FBI resisted that request for months, and now we learn that even when they did cooperate they withheld critical parts of the story. Their warnings now about risks to a source and to intelligence relationships must be measured against their prior warnings that turned out to be false. The leak and spin to the Post confirm that Mr. Nunes is asking questions that deserve to be answered.
This latest hall-of-mirrors episode should also show President Trump that if he really wants Americans to learn the whole truth about the FBI and the 2016 campaign, he should order a full declassification and end these intelligence games once and for all.

Comey, who just released his book A Higher Loyalty, also discussed the email scandal that dogged Hillary Clinton, the former Democratic presidential candidate who lost to Trump.
Former FBI director James Comey likened U.S. President Donald Trump to a self-serving Mafia boss Thursday during a talk in which he defended the decision to reopen the Hillary Clinton email investigation just days before the 2016 vote.
Speaking in Toronto, Comey lamented the current state of American politics, suggesting truth has all but disappeared from public discourse.
“Ethical leadership is about having external reference points. Near as I can tell, this president only has one reference point and it is internal,” Comey said during a conversation with bookstore executive Heather Reisman. “That’s very similar to a Cosa Nostra boss.”
Trump, Comey went on, makes decisions without proper information because nobody wants to challenge him.
The president fired Comey, 57, a year ago this week amid reports he was unhappy with the FBI investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia. Just a week before his dismissal, Comey had given details to the U.S. Senate about the probe into Russia’s alleged effort to sway the vote in Trump’s favour.
Comey, however, refused to offer an assessment of whether an investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into links between the Trump campaign and Russia might lead to impeachment proceedings or criminal charges against the president.
“I can’t rely on anything I see in the media because there are no leaks coming out of Robert Mueller’s operation, so I don’t know what he knows,” Comey said. “I really don’t know what he has. What I do know is that he and his team are an all-star team of pros.”
The former FBI boss, who has just released his book, A Higher Loyalty, also discussed the email scandal that dogged Clinton, the former Democratic candidate who lost to Trump.
He was adamant he had no choice but to announce 11 days before the presidential vote that the FBI was reopening a probe into whether she had criminally mishandled classified information when she was secretary of state.
The bureau and Justice Department, he said, have to be seen to be independent and professional, and the information that came their attention about thousands of recently discovered emails meant the public had to know. Concealing the information would have been “catastrophic,” he said.
“The act of concealment would be devastating to the institutions of justice for a generation,” Comey said. “And, if she’s elected, devastating to her presidency.”
After closing the second investigation, Comey characterized Clinton’s conduct with respect to the sensitive emails as “extremely careless.” What he should have said, he now says, was that she had been “really sloppy.”
Ultimately, he said, the investigation uncovered “evidence of wrongdoing” but not enough to warrant prosecution. The bureau found no indication Clinton knew that what she was doing was wrong.
Even in retrospect, he said, he would make the same key decisions he made at the time.
Comey went on to slam Trump for crossing the line by meeting alone with him shortly after Trump was elected.
“He knew what he was doing,” Comey said. “The first explicit request for loyalty surprised me. By the time he came back and asked for my loyalty again, there’s no doubt he knew it was a violation of norms.”
Comey also said he would work to make Americans understand the importance of integrity in public office.
“I’m worried that people are going to get discouraged and come to believe that truth is not the central value of leadership,” Comey said. “We’re in great peril now as a country of that touchstone of the truth being washed away like a sand castle.”

Although I am not a Hindu (by any means), it’s fairly easy to venture that all of this stupidity, cupidity, promiscuity, sophistry, and shallowness are a direct result of it being worthwhile (financially or socially) to adopt these traits.
In days of yore, such types were quickly given Darwin awards so that honest people could get on with their lives. We now live in a world where this sort of lowlife behavior is exalted and held up as a role model. There is no way to adequately emphasize just how anti-life this is.
Additionally, Darwin is being defeated by mechanized agriculture, bulk water purification, indoor plumbing, electrification, and modern medicine. Plagues and famines regularly used to weed out the less well-prepared.
Furthermore, Darwin is being thwarted once more as we warehouse millions of violent felons who, once again–in days of yore, would have gotten to play Wicker Man and not much else (other than the occasional lopped off ear or hand). That we give these hard-time jailbirds conjugal visits so they can perpetuate their obviously defective genes staggers any sane mind and is a perfect example of this “period of reversal”.

White House Examining Plan to Help Iranian People Oppose Regime
White paper pushes bid to help Iranians topple already weak hardline regime
The Trump administration is examining a new plan to help Iranians fighting the hardline regime in Iran following America’s exit from the landmark nuclear deal and reimposition of harsh economic sanctions that could topple a regime already beset by protests and a crashing economy, according to a copy of the plan obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
The three-page white paper being circulated among National Security Council officials in the White House offers a strategy by which the Trump administration can actively work to assist an already aggravated Iranian public topple the hardline ruling regime through a democratization strategy that focuses on driving a deeper wedge between the Iranian people and the ruling regime.
The plan, authored by the Security Studies Group, or SSG, a national security think-tank that has close ties to senior White House national security officials, including National Security Adviser John Bolton, seeks to reshape longstanding American foreign policy toward Iran by emphasizing an explicit policy of regime change, something the Obama administration opposed when popular protests gripped Iran in 2009.
The regime change plan seeks to fundamentally shift U.S. policy towards Iran and has found a receptive audience in the Trump administration, which has been moving in this direction since Bolton—a longtime and vocal supporter of regime change—entered the White House.

American Muslims Accused of Islamophobia

Muslims have a serious Islamophobia problem.
That’s the claim being made by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding which found that 30% of Muslims believe that Muslims are “more prone to negative behavior.”
That’s far higher than Jews at 13%, Catholics at 12% and Protestants at 11%.
18% of Muslims, the poll found, believe that Muslims are “more prone to violence”. Only 15% of Jews, 12% of Catholics and 13% of Protestants believe that about Muslims. The only group more likely to believe that Muslims more violent than Muslims are white evangelicals at 23%.
Dalia Mogahed, ISPU’s director of research, blames this on “internalized Islamophobia.” According to her, “Muslims have themselves internalized negative stereotypes about their own community” based on the media. Even though the media covers Muslims far more positively than any other religious group.
Mogahed was picked by Obama for his Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She’s collaborated with Muslim Brotherhood front groups and has been accused of mainstreaming them.
And her claim of internalized Islamophobia makes no sense.

Isn’t this a frank admission that Muslims know damn well what sort of violence is being perpetrated on the world in the name of Islam?
So, here’s some 30% of Muslims who are willing to admit that there’s “negative behavior” going on. What fraction of these survey participants were actual jihadis? Answer: ZERO (and I’d bet the farm on it). After all no terrorist worth his Semtex bomb vest is ever going to admit that his conduct constitutes, “negative behavior”.
Clearly, this “negative behavior” is spread amongst another large percentage (estimates range from 25%–33%) of the Muslim population. That leaves us with well over 50% (according to my cocktail napkin math) who are completely aware of Islamic violence.
Now, add in all of the survey respondents who prefer taqiyya and, therefore, intentionally underplayed Islam’s epidemic violence. That’s got to be an easy 10%–20%. And there you have it: We’re up at around 75% of Muslims who are all damn-well-aware of global jihad and its implications.
If ever there were a case for collective punishment …

Now in his early eighties, Garry Wills has been a fixture in American culture for no fewer than fifty years, during which he has written no fewer than fifty books. Some of them, such as Nixon Agonistes (1970), Inventing America: Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence (1978), Cincinnatus: George Washington and the Enlightenment (1984), Reagan’s America (1987), and Lincoln at Gettysburg (1992), have been about American history and American presidents. Others, including Papal Sin: Structures of Deceit (2000), Why Priests? (2013), and The Future of the Catholic Church with Pope Francis (2015), plus no fewer than eight books on Saint Augustine, have focused either on early Christianity or on contemporary Catholicism. Wills has also written books, such as Under God: Religion and American Politics (1990) and Head and Heart: American Christianities (2007), that bring together religion and politics.
Though he began his writing career in his early twenties at National Review – having spent a brief time as a Jesuit – Wills has spent most of career as an ornament of the establishment left, turning up frequently in the New York Review of Books and, along the way, winning two National Book Critics Circle Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. In recent years he has published a series of reader-friendly little books about the origins of Christianity – What Jesus Meant (142 pages, 2006), What Paul Meant (192 pages, 2006),What the Gospels Meant (209 pages, 2008). As this unfolds, the justice system seeks to reverse the sentence for a violent crime – murder – and has already bailed out the man convicted in the case in 2002. The connection to the still-powerful Kennedy family has everything to do with it.
Michael Skakel is the nephew of Ethel Kennedy, who was married to Robert F. Kennedy, president John F. Kennedy’s brother and his choice for attorney general. Michael graduated from Curry College and in 1994 and worked on the reelection campaign of Edward Moore Kennedy, JFK and RFK’s youngest brother, better known as Ted.
Michael lived in upscale Greenwich, Connecticut where on October 30, 1975, somebody took a golf club and bludgeoned neighbor Martha Moxley, 15, to death. In his 1998 book Murder in Greenwich: Who Killed Martha Moxley? detective Mark Fuhrman showed how Greenwich police served as a private security force for the wealthy Skakel family. Inexperienced with murder cases, local police also botched the investigation, particularly the crime scene.

Turkey’s acceptance to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in October 1951 was a boon for the organization. Though its human rights record was far from stellar, it was staunchly anti-Communist, maintained a formidable army, was amenable to the placement of NATO assets in the country, including nuclear-tipped Jupiter ballistic missiles and was strategically located, flanking the Soviet Union on the south and acting as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
Though Turkey was technically a Muslim country, it leaders, following the doctrines espoused by Kamal Ataturk, zealously guarded the secular nature of the state. Religious influence was kept to a minimum and this was especially true for government officials and parliamentarians. Indeed, there was a significant Jewish population in Turkey and Turkey was the first Muslim majority nation to recognize Israel, extending recognition in March 1949.
During the Korean War, Turkey sent a sizable contingent to fight alongside the United States-led United Nations coalition, and its troops acquitted themselves well in combat. Turkey’s strained relations with its neighbor Greece and its human rights record proved to be problematic issues for NATO but were overlooked in light of the benefits conveyed to NATO by Turkish membership.

“An 18-year-old Syrian was granted asylum in Austria by the country’s asylum authority despite the migrant being on trial for selling hard drugs to young girls at the time of the decision.
The Syrian, along with two other Syrian asylum seekers, one being his twin brother, were on trial for selling meth to young girls in the city of Linz when the 18-year-old had his asylum claim approved, Kronen Zeitung reports.
The three Syrians are said to have used their apartment as a base to sell at least 750 grams of meth to various customers including underage girls, some of whom paid for the drugs with sex. Some of the girls were as young as 14 years old.

“Nearly 1,200 forced marriage cases were logged by the government’s Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) last year, new data shows, with the body saying the number “may not reflect the full scale of the abuse.”
Of the 1,196 cases flagged 2017, more than one in four victims were younger than 18-years-old, and one in five were males, the FMU said in a report.
The document reveals that that, since 2012, the unit has logged between 1,200 and 1,400 cases each year, involving more than 90 foreign countries. In 2016, the FMU recorded over 1,400 victims, up from 1,200 in 2015, as reported by Breitbart London.
A massive 439 of the marriages in 2017 either took place or were due to take place in Pakistan, followed by Bangladesh with 129 reports, and 91 in Somalia. The list continues with India, Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Romania, and Saudi Arabia.
Despite the vast majority forced marriages taking part in Islamic states or predominantly Muslim countries, the report “does not provide a breakdown of reported cases to the FMU by religion,” claiming that, “no major faith in the UK advocates forced marriage.”
In 2017, there were 355 cases involved victims under 18-years-old, 353 victims aged between 18 and 25, and 186 cases when the victim involved was just 15 or younger.
In a statement, the FMU told the Guardian: “Forced marriage is a hidden crime, and these figures may not reflect the full scale of the abuse.”…”

“Muslim scholars from three countries issued an edict Friday saying that violent extremism and terrorism, including suicide attacks, are against Islamic principles, in an effort to convince the Taliban to end its violence.
Seventy prominent Muslim scholars from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia issued the fatwa, or edict, at a conference in Indonesia on ways to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who opened the one-day meeting, stressed Indonesia’s commitment to helping build peace in the war-torn country.
Jokowi said the conference was part of Indonesia’s efforts to encourage the role of Islamic clerics, or ulema, in promoting peace in Afghanistan.
“Through the voice of ulema, mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia, presumably the spirit of brotherhood for peace in Afghanistan can be strengthened,” Jokowi said.
“Ulema are the agent of peace … they have the power to form the face of peaceful people,” Jokowi said.
He expressed hope that the conference could contribute concretely to peace in Afghanistan.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Fatih in Istanbul on Friday to demonstrate against the imminent transfer of Israel’s US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags in solidarity against US President Donald Trump’s decision to formally recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, which is disputed by the Arab world due to its ancient ties to the Palestinian people.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal while speaking at the 101st German Catholic Congress in Munster on Friday.
“The Nuclear Agreement with Iran is a fundamental concern; it is the result of 12 years of work and a long diplomatic process. It is anything but ideal. But in Iran there are many other issues of great concern,” said Merkel.
“Despite that, what I believe is that it is not right when an agreement which was arranged, which was voted in by the UNSC, can be let down by one side. It damages trust,” she added.
Merkel also offered her unequivocal backing to Israel as tensions rise between Tehran and Tel Aviv, saying: “We stand by, trust and support Israel’s right to exist and its security, it is fully in the Germany’s national interest due to our history.”
