Human Rights Watch has interviewed dozens of “jihadi” brides at detention camps in Syria who want to return home, including at least 15 Germans. Several countries called for ex-IS members to be tried in Iraq and Syria.
Hundreds of foreign women who joined the “Islamic State” (IS) militant group with their children have been captured in recent months by US-backed Kurdish forces in northern Syria, Germany’s Die Welt newspaper reported on Saturday.
The German daily interviewed Human Rights Watch’s terrorism and counterterrorism program director, Nadim Houry, who spoke with many of the women during visits to several detention camps in Kurdish-held areas of the war-ravaged country last month.
“About 800 IS women with children are in four camps … they come from around 40 countries. There are women from Canada, France, Great Britain, Tunisia, Yemen, Turkey and Australia,” he said, adding that 15 were from Germany.
Houry described how the women and their children were being held at large detention sites, where they have a certain amount of freedom but are not allowed to leave. They are being held away from captured IS fighters, he added.
Subjected to violence
Some women he interviewed complained that they had been “beaten and humiliated” during interrogations and were forced to live in unhygienic conditions with their recently born babies.
“These women are in a very difficult situation. For the little kids especially, the circumstances are by no means good,” Houry told Die Welt.
The terrorism expert said the women now want to return to their home countries, even if it means facing criminal charges.
“Some women at least want to send their children home,” he told the paper, before calling on European governments to allow the children to return.
“The children have not committed any crimes, they are the victims of the war and often their radicalized parents,” he said.
Houry told Die Welt that Kurdish authorities had little interest in prosecuting the women, and instead were keen to transfer them to their home nations.
Not welcome at home
But Kurdish officials face strong resistance from several originating countries, including France, Britain and Belgium, who are currently dealing with thousands of returning male jihadi fighters from Syria and Iraq, who were imprisoned or escaped the conflict as IS lost ground during the last two years.
The French government, for example, has called for French jihadists arrested in Syria and Iraq to be tried there if they can be guaranteed a fair trial.
Last month, an Iraqi court sentenced a German woman to death by hanging after finding her guilty of belonging to the jihadi group, the first such sentence in a case involving a European woman.
Previous reports have revealed how hundreds of Western women have traveled to the Middle East to join IS since the radical Islamist group declared its caliphate in the two war-torn countries in 2014.
Although some were recruited as fighters, most married male IS militants and have found themselves isolated and living in appalling conditions.
In December, Iraq’s government declared victory in the fight against IS, which at its peak, captured a third of Iraqi and almost half of Syrian territory. With the Islamist group’s de-facto capital Raqqa lost in October, IS has been contained to just a few pockets of land in Syria, mostly around the Iraqi border.

For fellow readers, I saw the Gary Oldman movie Darkest Hour last night. In both an abstract and literal fashion did I see parallels between now and then. Portrayed as a flawed but great man I saw Trump in Churchill. I saw in Chamberlain every western politician who now appeases and even refuses to acknowledge the existance of the Redgreen alliance. I saw our weak-kneed, brainwashed, surrendering msm opinion leaders embodied by British parliament until one man’s strength of character, and cleverness overcame the sophists. I found it good but not great film.
Yes the parallels between then and now are scary, and there are just as many between just before WWI and now. Human nature hasn’t changed and that means that unless the facts of history are taught the mistakes of history will be repeated. This time around the enemies of freedom have so much power around the world the fighting will be (for the most) small unit actions and not the big combined arms actions of WWII, Korea and Nam. There will be some but most will be small to medium infantry actions, the war will last longer and be bloodier then WWII.
Not great because the subway scene, where the now-mandatory colonist was the smartest guy in the train, never happened. Not any part of it. Churchill did not consult with the locals and never took the subway and the colonist finishing an obscure poem about Rome never happened.
The BBC 4 part series on the same event is factually correct however and worth the watch, but is not art and emotional engineering in any way. Its just a re enactment of the events as they took place. I have seen 2 of the 4 parts but it comes highly recommended by people who study the actual history.
Political correctness is destroying our history, which is one reason the coming war will be so bloody.

My father assured me that when DeathWish was screened the audience cheered nonstop. So things have only become worse over ? 40 years, not different.

Pro-government forces and Kurdish-led forces have fought each other elsewhere in Syria and Damascus opposes the Kurds’ demands for autonomy. But in Afrin, they have a common enemy and a mutual interest in blocking Turkish advances.
Turkey, which regards the Kurdish YPG militia in Afrin as a threat on its southern border, launched an assault on the region last month. Seeking to shield Afrin, the Kurds asked Damascus to send forces into action to defend the border.
The government shows no sign of doing so, but it is providing indirect help by allowing Kurdish fighters, civilians and politicians to reach Afrin through territory it holds, representatives of both sides told Reuters.
Assad stands to gain while doing little.
The arrival of reinforcements is likely to sustain Kurdish resistance, bog down the Turkish forces and prolong a conflict that is sapping the resources of military powers that rival him for control of Syrian territory.
For the United States, it is yet another complication in Syria’s seven-year-old war and a reminder of how its Syrian Kurdish ally must at times make deals with Assad even as it builds military ties with the United States.
Lacking international protection, the Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria say they have reached agreements with Damascus to allow reinforcements to be sent to Afrin from other Kurdish-dominated areas — Kobani and the Jazeera region.
“There are different ways to get reinforcements to Afrin but the fundamental route is via regime forces. There are understandings between the two forces … for the sake of delivering reinforcements to Afrin,” Kino Gabriel, spokesman for the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said.
While the Kurds depend on Assad to reach Afrin, Kurdish sources say they also enjoy leverage over Damascus because it needs their cooperation to source grain and oil from areas of the northeast under Kurdish control.
A commander in the military alliance fighting in support of Assad said: “the Kurds have no option but coordination with the regime” to defend Afrin.
“The Syrian regime is helping the Kurds with humanitarian support and some logistics, like turning a blind eye and allowing Kurdish support to reach some fronts,” said the commander, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Celebrators in Tehran burned US and Israeli flags during the ceremony, while Ghadr ballistic missiles were put on display for the crowds to admire. Celebrators marched among Iranian flags and images of first Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran: Rouhani warns US against leaving JPCOA amid revolution celebrations
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed hundreds of thousands in Tehran on Sunday to mark the 39th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, where he warned the United States against withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPCOA), also known as the Iranian Nuclear Deal.
A US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal would make them “see the losses soon enough,” Rouhani said.
“America wanted to interfere in our state matters. But they failed because of our nation’s awareness, unity and resistance,” Rouhani told the celebrating crowd.

Turkish warships on Friday stopped a rig belonging to the Italian energy firm ENI as it headed toward an area southeast of Cyprus.
Turkey, in a statement Sunday, said Greek Cypriots were disregarding the “inalienable rights on natural resources” of Turkish Cypriots and jeopardizing the region’s stability.
Turkey’s foreign ministry said the Cyprus government was acting like “the sole owner of the island” and warned it would be responsible for any consequences. It also urged foreign companies not to support the Cyprus’ government’s activities.
Cyprus was split into an internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot south and a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north in 1974 when Turkey invaded following a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Only Turkey recognizes a Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence and keeps more than 35,000 troops in the north.
An ENI spokesman told The Associated Press that the Turkish warships told the rig not to continue because there would be military activities at its destination. The spokesman said the rig would remain where it stopped until the situation is resolved.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said Sunday that Cypriot authorities are taking actions that will neither lead to an escalation of tensions nor overlook the fact that Turkey was violating international law.
The Cyprus government says a gas search is its sovereign right and that any potential hydrocarbon wealth generated will be equitably shared among all Cypriots after the island is reunified.
Italy’s ENI, France’s TOTAL and ExxonMobil of the U.S. are among the companies licensed to search for hydrocarbons off Cyprus’ southern coast.
Last week, Cyprus announced that ENI and partner TOTAL had discovered a potentially sizeable gas field off its southwestern coast that’s close to Egypt’s Zohr deposit, which is the largest ever discovered in the Mediterranean.
In earlier drilling, Texas-based Noble Energy discovered a field off Cyprus estimated to hold more than 4 trillion cubic feet of gas.”
“Pastor Paul Song was a volunteer Chaplain at HMP Brixton for nearly 20 years. Many prisoners became Christians through the courses he ran (including Alpha) and had their lives transformed. He had full security clearance for all his activities and had even been given keys to the prison as a sign of the high esteem in which he was held.
But in 2015, this changed – the Senior Chaplain at the prison was replaced by a Muslim. Imam Mohamed Yusef Ahmed began scrutinising the material used in Pastor Song’s courses, commenting that the material was “too radical”; and that the Christian views expressed were “extreme” – despite the fact that these courses are mainstream Christian courses, used by Christians throughout the world.
Imam Mohamed asked Paul to stop running the courses, which he reluctantly agreed to, though Paul carried on going into the prison to meet with prisoners. At no point were complaints made by prisoners either about the content of the courses or Paul’s attitude towards any of the prisoners.
Then, in August 2017, Paul received an email from Imam Mohamed, telling him that he no longer had permission to enter the prison wings or speak to any prisoner at HMP Brixton. Pastor Song was not informed of any substantive grounds which may justify his removal.
Bemused by the email, and having no awareness that anything was wrong, Paul met with the Imam, during which he was again told that he was no longer welcome at the prison and he had “no right to appeal against” the decision. Again, no reasons were given.
Eventually, Paul received a letter from Graham Horlock (Head of Reducing Re-Offending at HMP Brixton) on 4th September 2017, informing him for the first time that an accusation had been made that Paul called a prisoner a “terrorist”, and stating that the decision to remove him from his role applied “permanently with immediate effect”. This was the first occasion on which Paul heard about the allegation – which Paul denies.
The prison has ignored requests to even provide information of the alleged complainant and a copy of his statement.
After being kept waiting for 5 months without explanation, he received an email on 11th January nothing that “the exclusion [from HMP Brixton] is permanent.”
Former Brixton prisoner Jeremy Conlon said: “Prison is a tough place to be, though Paul was a light in the darkness for me and many others. Paul’s humility, wisdom and gentleness amazed all the prisoners, and he gave us a much-needed opportunity to receive prayer, to discuss issues we were struggling with and to ask questions. I cannot speak highly enough of him, and am deeply saddened by the way in which he has been treated”.
Another former prisoner at Brixton, Peter Levy, said: “Paul’s continued support for me and other prisoners, even after the course had finished, brought us all hope of a new way of life. He even met me at the prison gates on the date of my release and took me for food, and helped me work through the family and work issues I was having at the time. Without him, I would have had nowhere to turn, and to think he was doing all this voluntarily is amazing”.”

Israel Hits Back at Iran and Syria as Border Region Boils
Israel launched attacks on Iranian and Syrian positions after it said Iran sent a military drone into its airspace Saturday, raising the prospect of further escalation over the Islamic Republic’s growing presence in Syria.
Israel struck 12 targets in Syria, including four Iranian targets, in a “large-scale attack” after the drone infiltration, the Israel Defense Forces said. An F-16 fighter plane crashed in northern Israel after coming under fire from Syrian anti-aircraft missiles, and the pilots were hospitalized with moderate to severe injuries.

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT – Israel launched heavy air strikes in Syria on Saturday, saying it hit air defenses and Iranian targets, and the Syrian army claimed to have brought down an Israeli F-16 that crashed in northern Israel in a major escalation of tension.
The Israeli military said early assessments indicated the jet had been shot down by Syrian fire, but this was still unconfirmed.

CIA denies report over mystery Russian who promised Trump info
Washington (AFP) – The CIA on Saturday categorically denied reports that it was fleeced by a mystery Russian who promised compromising information on US President Donald Trump.
The secretive agency rarely issues any kind of comment, but came out to deny the report in The New York Times and a similar one in The Intercept, an online journal focusing on national security issues.
“The fictional story that CIA was bilked out of $100,000 is patently false,” the Central Intelligence Agency said in a statement sent to AFP.
“The people swindled here were James Risen and Matt Rosenberg,” the CIA said, referring to Times reporter Rosenberg, who wrote the story, and Risen, a former Times reporter who authored The Intercept’s article.

No cars allowed: Georgia considers highway just for trucks
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia transportation officials are exploring the idea of a separate highway for trucks only.
It would be the first highway of its kind in the United States, said John Hibbard, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s operations director.
WABE Radio reports that the toll-free highway would stretch 40 miles (65 kilometers) from metro Atlanta to Macon. It would give trucks their own separate roadway, which would have its own exits and entrances, Hibbard said.
State transportation officials say they expect truck traffic to double by 2040. The truck-only lanes have been proposed as a solution to reducing congestion for drivers of noncommercial vehicles on Georgia interstates.

Officials identify the two officers killed in the line of duty in a Columbus-Ohio suburb.
54-year-old Eric Joering and 39-year-old Anthony Morelli were fatally shot while responding to, what is being described, as a ‘911 hang-up call’ in Westerville.
Authorities said they were immediately met with gunfire when they entered the apartment and believe it was a domestic situation, but have not released further details.
Officer joering was killed at the scene, while officer Morelli died during surgery.
Local media reports the suspect is in custody, and has been transported to the local hospital with at least one gunshot wound.
President Trump responded to the shooting on twitter, Saying his thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers.

North Korea keeps mum on summit invite as its delegation completes South visit
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea’s delegation sent to the Winter Olympics held “frank and candid” talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the North Korean news agency said on Sunday, but it made no mention of the North’s invitation to Moon to Pyongyang for a summit.
The delegation, the highest-ranking to visit the South and led by the younger sister of the North’s leader Kim Jong Un, concluded its visit on Sunday after charming and intriguing the South Korean public, but still faces deep scepticism over Pyongyang’s sincerity towards improving relations.
Any summit between the two still-officially warring Koreas would be a coup for Moon, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the standoff over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
In a rare honor for visiting foreign guests, Moon met Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, four times during the delegation’s three-day visit. Moon’s chief of staff held a farewell dinner for the delegation before the delegation attended a performance by a North Korean orchestra, the last item on their itinerary before heading home.

Barclays in U.S. set to join cryptocurrency credit card ban: report
LONDON (Reuters) – Barclays is likely to follow other major lenders in the United States in stopping customers from buying Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies with its credit cards, according to an interview with a senior executive at its credit card unit.
“We are making the decision that we will likely no[t] allow cryptocurrency purchases on the card,” Paul Wilmore, managing director at Barclaycard, told Bank Innovation blog.
A spokeswoman for Barclays in London said that the bank is reviewing its policy on a country-by-country basis and that it had not yet changed its policy.
Barclaycard is one of the biggest credit card providers in both Britain and the U.S. that is yet to formally announce a ban on card purchases of digital currencies.
Lloyds Banking Group Plc, which issues just over a quarter of all credit cards in Britain, and Virgin Money announced such a ban last week, following the lead of JP Morgan Chase & Co and Citigroup.
The moves are aimed at protecting customers from running up huge debts from buying virtual currencies on credit, if their values were to plummet, a Lloyds spokeswoman said last week.

With North Sinai closed off for non-residents and journalists, the army’s casualty figures could not be independently confirmed. Biggest Justice Department official yet has just stepped down

Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the number three official at the Department of Justice, resigned late Friday.
The New York Times reports that Brand is leaving federal service to take a job as a general counsel in the private sector, a far more lucrative prospect than government work.
Officially, Brand’s departure is not related to the controversies that have roiled the department at the highest levels. Still, that she would leave after just nine months in the administration suggests that conflict has destabilized the upper echelons of the Justice Department.
As the Department’s third-in-command, Brand would have been a candidate to assume supervision of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, should President Donald Trump fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Minnesota wants schools to adopt racial quotas in student discipline

The fact that black students are suspended at a higher rate than white students doesn’t show racism. This disparity may just show that they are misbehaving at a higher rate. Thus, such a “disparity does not, by itself, constitute discrimination,” as a federal appeals court noted. (Belk v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, 269 F.3d 305, 332 (4th Cir. 2001)).
But this reality is lost on a Minnesota state agency, which is demanding that school districts adopt unconstitutional racial quotas to eliminate such “disparities.” Meanwhile, it is stonewalling freedom-of-information requests for the letters in which it makes these improper demands.

Upon learning that the White House had declined to release Rep. Adam Schiff’s “rebuttal” to Devin Nunes’s FISA abuse memo, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer intimated that the question now is “what is he [the president] hiding?”
I disagree. I think the question now is how will the Democrats’ little immorality drama play in Peoria?
Schiff carefully scripted his two-act play “Memogate” in a way that would achieve precisely this result. Claiming that the Nunes memo had omitted “material facts that were necessary for the public to see that the FBI acted properly,” but knowing in reality the claim was bogus, he went ahead and loaded up his memo with enough classified information to ensure it would be rejected as a threat to national security.
Schiff had evidently hoped against odds that his two aces in the hole — Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray — would go along with his ruse and greenlight the rebuttal. Instead they did their job this time, confirming the rightness of the White House’s decision, noting that “portions of the Democratic memo … would raise national security or law enforcement concerns if released publicly.”

“Italian police have arrested two more Nigerian immigrants in their investigation into the brutal murder of Pamela Mastropietro, the Roman 18-year-old whose dismembered remains were found inside two suitcases outside Macerata in central Italy earlier this month.
Shortly after the murder, law enforcement officials arrested Innocent Oseghale, a 29-year-old Nigerian drug dealer, and afterward discovered blood-stained clothes, large kitchen knives, a cleaver, and other items belonging to the murdered woman in the man’s apartment. They immediately began a search for the man’s accomplices since various elements of the crime indicated the participation of more than one person.
On Saturday, police arrested two more Nigerian asylum-seekers, 22-year-old Lucky Desmond and 27-year-old Awelima Lucky, respectively living in Montecassiano and Macerata. One of the two men was reportedly fleeing toward the northern Italian region of Lombardy, which made the arrests all the more pressing.
The prosecutor of Macerata is charging the three men with murder, along with the sale of narcotics and the desecration and concealment of a corpse, based in part on a coroner’s report delivered Friday evening, which provided further details of the murder.
In the analysis of the woman’s mutilated corpse, investigators found that certain body parts were missing, including the victim’s neck and a portion of the genital organs.

A Utah state senator was forced to hide in his hotel room after a persistent young woman appeared at the door and insisted she was his “date.”
Republican state Sen. Evan Vickers told media he was preparing to leave his room at the Little America on Thursday night when the woman appeared, KSTU-TV reported.
What did the woman say?
“I opened the door and there was a young lady standing there and she said ‘Hi,’ and I said, ‘Hi, who are you?’ And she said, ‘I’m your date.’ I said, ‘No, you’re not.’ She said, ‘Yes, I’m your date,’” KSTU reported.

The Khomeinist revolution took around four months to achieve victory, not long enough to allow a lot of people to conjure a heroic biography for themselves.
Just a year before the “final victory” on 11 February some of the mullahs who emerged as grandees of the revolution, among them Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati who now heads the all-powerful Council of Guardians of the Islamic Constitution, were kissing the Shah’s hands during audiences for clerics. Other grandees of the revolution like Hojat al-Islam Morteza Motahari were on Empress Farah’s payroll as members of the “philosophical” boutique she had set up as solace from boredom.

“Iranian telecommunication officials are saying that hackers who accessed the websites of some of the country’s dailies are from the United States and Britain.
A Sunday statement carried by the official IRNA news agency quotes the officials as saying the hackers targeted 30 websites on Saturday, including some belonging to Iranian newspapers.
It added, however, that the websites were poorly secured.
Late on Saturday hackers accessed the dailies’ websites and changed their Farsi top stories to a contrived report about the death of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
No one has claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks.
Since 2012, the U.S. has blamed Iranian hackers for targeting American banks, a small dam near New York City and the email and social media accounts of Obama administration officials.”
At least eight people in Bolivia have died when a gas canister used by a street vendor exploded during the city of Oruro’s famous carnival celebrations.
More than 40 others were injured, the authorities said.
Several victims had to be airlifted to Bolivia’s main city, La Paz, as local hospitals struggled to cope.
Hundreds of thousands of people take part every year in Oruro’s carnival celebrations.
The blast happened on Saturday evening on a crowded side street close to the main parade route.

Bell’s proposal is utterly Orwellian — an overt attempt to control website access and criminalize everyday online activities. It will lead to legitimate content and speech being censored.2 Our right to free expression and the principles of Net Neutrality are all under threat.
We need to act fast. That’s why we’re launching a national Day of Action. And to ramp up the pressure we want to put up massive billboards around Montréal, where Bell’s HQ are located.
If enough Canadians voice their opposition to Bell’s scheme, the CRTC won’t be able to ignore us.

Implementing a censorship agency is a slippery slope. Putting an agency with no judicial oversight in charge of policing what we can and can’t see, and say, online would push the doors wide open for other types of content to be easily taken down.
The worst part is it’s obvious that Bell’s proposals won’t have any impact on piracy. Data shows that when Internet users are given an affordable and convenient option to pay for content, they will.5
The only effect of this proposal will be greater censorship powers for the government based on suggestions from a Bell coordinated committee.

Billionaire financier George Soros will pledge an additional 100,000 pounds to Best for Britain, a campaign group seeking to keep Britain in the European Union, the Guardian reported on Sunday.
Soros, who donated 400,000 pounds to the campaign last week, is to make a new donation after attacks against him in the right-wing press, the Guardian said.
“I am happy to take the fight to those who have tried to use a smear campaign, not arguments, to prop up their failing case,” Soros told the newspaper. bit.ly/2BnLRH6
The investor’s Open Society Foundation (OSF) will match a crowdfunding campaign set up in the wake of attacks on Soros, which has already raised more than 50,000 pounds since last week, the Guardian said.
Best for Britain and the Open Society Foundation could not be immediately reached for comment on the report.
Soros, best known in Britain for earning billions betting against the pound in the early 1990s, is the target of a hostile media campaign by the nationalist government in his native Hungary and a hate figure for right-wing campaigners in eastern Europe and the United States.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper, which first reported Soros’s involvement with Best for Britain last week, said the 87-year-old former hedge fund manager was backing a “secret plot” to stop Brexit. The article was written by Nick Timothy, a former chief of staff to Prime Minister Theresa May.
May’s office repeated its long-standing position that the decision to leave the EU in 2019 after a vote in 2016 was final and would not be reversed. It had also defended the right of campaign groups to accept donations.

Billionaire financier George Soros has pledged another £100,000 to his anti-Brexit campaign after he said that engineering a “mere reversal” of the EU referendum result is not enough.
Mr Soros, and his OSF Foundation, will say today that they match smaller donations to the Best for Britain campaign up to the value of £100,000 as part of a plan to “accelerate” his campaign to stop Brexit.
Best for Britain has urged people to come forward to help the group create a ‘Fight Brexit Fund’. By last night £45,000 had been pledged in donations of less than £100.
