China’s police have a new weapon in their surveillance arsenal: sunglasses with built-in facial recognition. According to reports from local media, the glasses are being tested at train stations in the “emerging megacity” of Zhengzhou, where they’ll be used to scan travelers during the upcoming Lunar New Year migration. This a period of extremely busy holiday travel, often described as the largest annual human migration event on Earth, and the police say the sunglasses have already been used to capture seven suspects wanted in major cases, and 26 other individuals traveling under false identities.
The sunglasses are yet another component in China’s burgeoning tech-surveillance state. In recent years, the country has poured resources into various tracking technologies, developing artificial intelligence to identify individuals and digitally tail them around cities. One estimate suggests the country will have more than 600 million CCTV cameras by 2020, which Chinese tech startups are building advanced features for.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the sunglasses being deployed in Zhengzhou are built by Beijing-based LLVision Technology Co. The company’s chief executive Wu Fei told the publication that LLVision worked with local police to match the technology to their needs. The problem is that facial recognition features often struggles when running on CCTV cameras, because the picture is blurry and by the time a target is identified they might already have moved on.
The sunglasses, by comparison, given police “the ability to check anywhere,” says Wu. “By making wearable glasses, with AI on the front end, you get instant and accurate feedback. You can decide right away what the next interaction is going to be.”
The sunglasses are controlled by a connected mobile unit and sell for 3,999 yuan, or $636 (though the facial recognition support costs extra). LLVision says they’re able to recognize individuals from a pre-loaded database of 10,000 suspects in just 100 milliseconds, but cautions that accuracy levels in real-life usage may vary due “environmental noise.”
The flexibility of a device like this is worrying for privacy advocates, who say that new surveillance technology is being deployed without adequate thought or oversight, all while offering considerable new powers to governments. This is especially true in China, where law enforcement can track and surveil citizens with complete freedom. William Nee, China researcher at Amnesty International, told WSJ: “The potential to give individual police officers facial-recognition technology in sunglasses could eventually make China’s surveillance state all the more ubiquitous.”

“An Australian judge has been called “unreasonable” for ordering the Muslim wife of an accused terrorist to remove her niqab and show her face while attending her husband’s trial.
She refused the request to remove the traditional Muslim face covering and was subsequently escorted from the building to sit outside while the case was being heard, the Herald Sun reports.
“I require anybody who comes into the court — and all are welcome — but anybody who comes into the court, for their face to be uncovered,’ Justice Beale of the Victorian Supreme Court said. According to the transcript of proceedings, the lawyer for the wife’s husband said she was “obviously not prepared to do that.”
A court spokesman told the newspaper that judges can decide who is allowed to sit in their courts.
Islamic Council of Victoria vice president Adel Salman slammed the ban by Justice Beale, saying it’s a violation of the woman’s human rights. He added:

Women choose to wear it. It’s part of their faithfulness to God. To ask them to remove it is quite intrusive and, in some cases, can be traumatic.

There have been two major new blasts of information in the last 48 hours. One is the less-redacted version of the Grassley-Graham memo that was released on Monday.
The other is a fresh batch of 2015-2016 texts between FBI employees Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, which were included with an interim report from the Senate Homeland Security Committee on its probe of the DOJ/FBI Hillary Clinton email investigation.
Regarding the Grassley-Graham memo, Kimberley Strassel has a nice tweet-thread summary, including the point that the “Clinton friend” referred to in the memo appears to be Sidney Blumenthal.

Among the shocking revelations in the newly released batch of texts between FBI agent Peter Strzok and his mistress, FBI lawyer Lisa Page, is that the agency failed to flag emails from Hillary Clinton’s private email server were marked classified (with a “C”) when they were sent. This seemingly would have been one of the first and most obvious checks in an investigation and one that FBI agents instantly recognized put the facts at odds with Clinton’s public statements.
The Intelligence Community Inspector General noticed it after the FBI missed it, the texts reveal. “Holy cow,” Strzok wrote, “if the FBI missed this, what else was missed?”
“Remind me to tell you to flag for Andy [redacted] emails we (actually ICIG) found that have portion marks (C) on a couple of paras. DoJ was Very Concerned about this,” he wrote.
“Found on the 30k [emails] provided to State originally. No one noticed. It cuts against ‘I never sent or received anything marked classified,’” he wrote, referring to statements by Clinton downplaying the danger of her email practices.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — One man has died after he and three others were stabbed during a church service at a private home in Texas, police said Thursday.
As many as 20 people were in the home Wednesday night when an apparent member of the congregation pulled a knife and stabbed four men, according to Corpus Christi police Lt. Chris Hooper. He said a 61-year-old man later died of his injuries, while the church’s 54-year-old pastor was hospitalized in serious condition.
Hooper declined to identify the victims. But police said late Wednesday that a band member was stabbed in the neck and the pastor was stabbed in the chest, and both were taken hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police said two other men suffered puncture wounds — one to a hand and the other to his arm — while trying to get the suspect away from the pastor.
