  1. the telegraph – British 15-year-old gained access to intelligence operations in Afghanistan and Iran by pretending to be head of CIA, court hears

A 15-year-old gained access to plans for intelligence operations in Afghanistan and Iran by pretending to be the head of the CIA to gain access to his computers, a court has heard.

From the bedroom of the Leicestershire home he shared with his mother, Kane Gamble used “social engineering” – where a person builds up a picture of information and uses it manipulate others into handing over more – to access the personal and work accounts of some of America’s most powerful spy chiefs .

The teenager persuaded call handlers at an internet giant that he was John Brennan, the then director of the CIA, to gain access to his computers and an FBI helpdesk that he was Mark Giuliano, then the agency’s Deputy Director, to re-gain access to an intelligence database.

He also targeted the US Secretary of Homeland Security and Barack Obama’s Director of National Intelligence from his semi-detached council house in Coalville.

Gamble taunted his victims online, released personal information, bombarded them with calls and messages, downloaded pornography onto their computers and took control of their iPads and TV screens, a court heard.

Mr Justice Haddon-Cave noted: “He got these people in his control and played with them in order to make their lives difficult.

John Lloyd-Jones QC, prosecuting, said that Gamble founded Crackas With Attitude (CWA) in 2015, telling a journalist: “It all started by me getting more and more annoyed about how corrupt and cold blooded the US Government are so I decided to do something about it.”

Mr Lloyd-Jones said that it was a common misconception that the group were hackers when in fact they used “social engineering” to gain access to emails, phones, computers and law enforcement portals.

“It involves manipulating people, invariably call centre or help desk staff, into permitting acts or divulging confidential information,” the prosecutor said.

Gamble, who has pleaded guilty to ten offences under the computer misuse act, first targeted Mr Brennan and gained access to his Verizon internet account by pretending first to be employee of the company and then Mr Brennan himself, building up an increasingly detailed picture.

At first he was denied access to his computers as he could not name Mr Brennan’s first pet, but on later calls the handler changed the pin and security questions.

He used similar methods to access Mr Brennan’s AOL account and eventually Gamble was able to access his emails, contacts, his iCloud storage account and his wife’s iPad remotely.

Mr Lloyd-Jones QC said: “He accessed some extremely sensitive accounts referring to, among other things, military operations and intelligence operations in Afghanistan and Iran.”

Gamble, who is now 18, later posted sensitive information on Twitter and Wikileaks and taunted officials about his access, sometimes using the tag #freePalestine and claiming it was because the US Government was “killing innocent people”.

Gamble used similar techniques to hack the home broadband of Jeh Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and was able listened to his voicemails and send texts from his phone.

He bombarded Mr Johnson and his wife with calls, asking her: “Am I scaring you?” and left messages threatening to “bang his daughter”, the court heard.

Around October 2015, when Gamble turned 16, gained access to Mr Giuliano’s home accounts by pretending to be the FBI boss and using the information gained he accessed the FBI’s Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (Leap).

Mr Lloyd-Jones QC described it as “a gateway providing law enforcement agencies, intelligence groups and criminal justice agencies access to beneficial resources”.

This included criminal intelligence and details of police officers and government employees, and Gamble boasted: “This has to be the biggest hack, I have access to all the details the Feds use for background checks.”

The FBI had realised that their system was breached and the password was changed, but at one point Gamble managed to change it and regain access by pretending to be Mr Giuliano in a call to the helpdesk.

He used his access to steal and post online personal details of Officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri.

At the same time he harassed the Giuliano family and people associated with them and bombarded them with calls, meaning that they were forced to seek protection from the intelligence agencies and an armed guard was placed at their home.

Mr Obama’s senior science and technology adviser John Holdren had his personal accounts hacked and Gamble passed all of his personal details to an accomplice who used them to make hoax calls to the local police claiming that there was a violent incident at Mr Holdren’s house resulting in an armed swat team being deployed.

His eight month reign of chaos was brought to an end in February 2016 after he gained access to the US Department of Justice’s network over a number of days, accessing details of 20,000 FBI employees and case files including that on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

The FBI and the US secret service had such concern over the material that he had seen that they immediately called police in the UK and he was arrested at his home.

The Old Bailey also heard that he accessed the private calls and emails of Avril Haines, the White House deputy national security adviser and FBI Special Agent Amy Hess.

In the case of Ms Hess he downloaded films on to her computer, including one called Hackers and V for Vendetta as well as a pornographic title. He changed an equipment list on her computer to a list of derogatory terms.

James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence under President Obama, was also targeted and all of his home phone calls were diverted to the Free Palestine Movement.

Vonna Weir Heaton, the former intelligence executive of the US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Had her social media accounts access by Gamble who sent messages pretending to be her.

At one point on an internet chat he said that he had considered not sharing any more information “because it put lives at risk, but then I thought they are killing innocent people every day”, the court heard.

Medical experts for the defence argue that he is on the autism spectrum and at the time of his offending had the mental development of a 12 or 13-year-old.

He has no friends to speak off and is closest to his mother Ann, a cleaner who reportedly won a £1.6million lottery jackpot in 1997 but “lost all the money on doomed property deals”.

William Harbage QC said that after his arrest he told doctors “it was kind of easy” and that he had little consequences of his actions “in his bedroom on the internet thousands of miles away”.

Mr Justice Haddon-Cave will sentence him on a date to be fixed.

Its perp was not a minor and made no claim to diminshed capacity. Knowing what I do about computer security and the diminished capacity of Aspies, I speculate that the L’shire perp was socially engineered himself. That is, someone on the internet prompted him step-by-step on who to target and how to find vulnerabilities. Once prompted, he may have become like a demon, gone out on his own to become such a nuisance that he was thankfully caught. I’d want to know who he was in contact with over the internet to start with and whether someone he met on-line provided him with message-hiding software for his phone.

  2. Channel 4 calls in security experts after presenter suffers online abuse

Cathy Newman subjected to ‘vicious misogynistic abuse’ after interview with psychologist

Channel 4 News has called in security specialists to analyse threats made to presenter Cathy Newman following her interview with a controversial Canadian psychologist who has attracted a following among the “alt-right”.

Ben de Pear, the editor of Channel 4 News, said Newman had been subjected to “vicious misogynistic abuse”. Having to calling in security specialists was a “terrible indictment of the times we live in”, he said.

Newman interviewed the psychologist, Jordan Peterson, about gender on Tuesday.

    • Having watched it twice now the only real abuse I noticed was of the role of interviewer: I doubt if she asked him one relevant question and totally lost the plot at one moment. I really do wonder about these “misogynistic threats” from the supposed alt-right as while she did make a total fool of herself, she didn’t even ruffle his feathers one mm. IMO this is BBC bull effluent to cover her disaster and gain her sympathy from the trusting public( still far too many of them)

  3. Convicted Pakistani paedophile, 39, claims it’s ‘too dangerous’ to send him home after vigilantes snared him trying to have sex with a girl, 14, ‘because he thought it was legal in UK’ (dailymail, Jan 19, 2018)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5288267/Man-thought-sex-14-year-old-OK-jailed.html

“A Pakistani paedophile who claimed he didn’t realise it was illegal to have sex with 14-year-olds intends to use his conviction for grooming to help him claim asylum in the UK.

Adil Sultan, 39, thought he was chatting to a schoolgirl online, where he encouraged her to send him explicit photos of herself and meet up with him for sex.

But he was actually exchanging messages with the vigilante group Guardians of the North, who intercepted him and handed him over to the police.

He has now been jailed for 17 months after pleading guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Sultan, who had posed as a 25-year-old and used a fake online name, believed ‘it was ok’ to have sex with a girl of 14.

He now claims his conviction means he cannot return to his homeland, as anger over a recent child rape case means it is now unsafe for him.

Instead, he plans to apply for asylum in the UK…”

    • Oh the UK will let him stay as they do not have the courage to deport someone for a mild cultural difference. Rotherham sounds like a good place for him although there are probably a hundred like it out there. In my world he would be buried in pork fat already… not vey PC but the anger mounts.

“ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkey’s army said it shelled Kurdish positions in Syria’s Afrin region on Friday and Saturday, hitting shelters and hideouts used by militants from three groups, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), PYD and YPG.

The militants had earlier fired on Turkish positions, the army said in a statement.

President Tayyip Erdogan said this week he would crush the Syrian Kurdish militia in Afrin, which he viewed as a security threat to Turkey.

  6. London: Muslim Enclave Votes to ‘Ban Trump’ (breitbart, Jan 20, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/01/20/ban-trump-votes-london-council-uk-most-muslim-borough/

“A London borough – which has the highest percentage of Muslims in the UK – has voted to ban U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the area, declaring him a “bigot”.

The council has been at the centre of serious corruption scandals, including the removal of an Islamist mayor who was found guilty of bribing Muslim groups and wielding “undue spiritual influence” on Muslim voters.

The anti-Trump motion, proposed by Councillor Ohid Ahmed and Councillor Oliur Rahman, passed by a majority vote this week.

It calls for President Trump’s planned state visit to the United Kingdom to be cancelled, adding: “Should the Government still choose to go ahead with State Visit, this Council makes clear that President Trump would not be welcome in our Borough.”

The area in East London includes the famous Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, but the ban does not appear to be enforceable.

The current Labour mayor, John Biggs, complained that President Trump “doesn’t applaud diversity [and] doesn’t respect the culture of others and doesn’t respect women”.

The mayor added: “He is failing in his leadership and we should not welcome him here. We must be vigorous in our intolerance of his intolerance.”…”

  7. India accuses Pakistan of fresh attacks on Kashmir frontier (abcnews, Jan 20, 2018)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/india-accuses-pakistan-fresh-attacks-kashmir-frontier-52481010

“Indian officials said Pakistani troops opened fire Saturday along their volatile frontier in Kashmir, killing two civilians and a solider in the latest escalation of violence in the disputed region.

Indian police said Pakistani soldiers were targeting Indian border posts and villages with mortar shells and automatic gunfire for the fourth straight day in Jammu region. Pakistan did not immediately comment Saturday, but both countries have accused the other of initiating past border skirmishes and causing civilian and military casualties.

The two civilians, one a teenage boy, were killed Saturday when mortar shells exploded inside their homes, police said. At least 10 civilians and a paramilitary soldier were also injured.

The army soldier was killed in Poonch sector along the de facto frontier where Indian and Pakistani soldiers on Saturday were trading gunfire and mortar shells, said Col. Nitin Joshi, an Indian army spokesman.

Pakistan on Friday accused Indian troops of initiating cross-border fire and targeting Pakistani villages.

India and Pakistan have a long history of bitter relations over Kashmir, a Himalayan territory claimed by both in its entirety. They have fought two of their three wars over the region since they gained independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

Most of the recent fighting is taking place along a somewhat-defined frontier where each country has a separate paramilitary border force guarding the lower-altitude 200-kilometer (125-mile) boundary separating Indian-controlled Kashmir and the Pakistani province of Punjab.

Late Friday, it escalated to the contentious frontier that includes a 740-kilometer (460-mile) rugged and mountainous stretch called the Line of Control that is guarded by the armies of India and Pakistan.

On Friday, the two countries summoned other’s senior diplomats in their capitals to register their anger and protest over what both call unprovoked cease-fire violations. They also issued statements condemning the violence.

Schools in frontier villages have been closed on the Indian side and authorities advised residents to stay indoors as shells and bullets rained down.

Indian authorities have also deployed bulletproof vehicles to evacuate people who were injured and sick. Bullets and shrapnel scarred homes and walls amid the intense firing and shelling.

The exchange of fire comes after Islamabad on Monday accused Indian forces of killing four Pakistani soldiers along the Line of Control in Kashmir, where rebel groups demand that Kashmir be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, which Pakistan denies.

Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown since 1989.”

The agency tells a federal judge that it is investigating and ‘sincerely regrets its failure.’

The National Security Agency destroyed surveillance data it pledged to preserve in connection with pending lawsuits and apparently never took some of the steps it told a federal court it had taken to make sure the information wasn’t destroyed, according to recent court filings.

Word of the NSA’s foul-up is emerging just as Congress has extended for six years the legal authority the agency uses for much of its surveillance work conducted through U.S. internet providers and tech firms. President Donald Trump signed that measure into law Friday.

  10. Russia, U.S. likely to discuss North Korea in Moscow: Minister to TASS

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Diplomats from Russia and the United States are likely to hold their next round of consultations on North Korea in Moscow on a date yet to be decided, TASS news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov as saying on Saturday.

He also said a delegation from North Korea might visit Moscow before the start of next month’s Olympic Games.

Morgulov told the news agency that he has sent an invitation for talks to Joseph Yun, the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy.

The talks about North Korea’s missile program and nuclear aspirations are taking place amid accusations from U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow was helping Pyongyang evade international sanctions. Russia denies the allegations.

  11. Wait: Now we’re being told there are 4.5 times as many ‘DREAMers’ as previously stated?
By Howard Portnoy January 19, 2018

As the Senate approaches the witching hour when the government shuts down thanks to the Democrats’ refusal to vote for the continuing resolution that would keep it open, USA Today is reporting that the actual number of DREAMers is closer to 3.6 million than the 800,000 estimate previously asserted.

The source of this information, according to USA Today immigration reporter Alan Gomez, is the Migration Policy Institute, “a non-partisan, non-profit think tank that studies global immigration patterns.”

The paper, which is intensely pro-DACA, sets this bombshell in the context not of its $26 billion cost to taxpayers over the next ten years but of the “number of people whose lives risk being uprooted”:

  12. As House members vow to make FBI FISA abuses public, multiple threads come together
    By J.E. Dyer January 19, 2018

In startling broadcasts on Fox Thursday evening, several members of Congress stated unequivocally that a report they were able to review on FBI and DOJ activities in 2016 showed multiple instances of misuse of surveillance authority against the Trump campaign.

The congressmen – Jim Jordan (R-OH), Matthew Gaetz (R-FL), Raul Labrador (R-ID), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) – confirmed that the opposition-research “dossier” paid for by the Democrats was used to justify FISA surveillance.

They said it was clear from the information which officials had authorized or participated in some of the key abuses.

They asserted without caveat that the Mueller investigation is based on a lie, that there are officials in the DOJ and FBI who have known that all along, and that the Mueller investigation should be shut down forthwith.

And they vowed to get the material they reviewed released for the review of the media and the public as soon as possible. Jordan and Gaetz spoke of the House of Representatives, via Speaker Paul Ryan, requesting release of the report they saw on Thursday from the executive branch (i.e., the DOJ). But Raul Labrador, speaking an hour later on Laura Ingraham’s broadcast, said the House itself could release the material to the public on its own authority.

“A primary school that controversially banned pupils from wearing hijabs appears to have backed down after the chair of governors announced his resignation following complaints from parents.

St Stephen’s primary school in Newham, east London, hit the headlines at the weekend after the Sunday Times reported it had banned Muslim girls under the age of eight from wearing headscarves, to the delight of campaigners who argued it enforces religious conformity on children.

That decision, along with curbs on children fasting on school days during Ramadan, upset many parents, who said they had not been consulted.

On Friday, the school’s chair of governors, Arif Qawi, said he was stepping down, telling colleagues in an email: “I wish the school continued success and am truly sorry that my actions have caused any harm to the reputation of the fantastic school.”

Qawi’s comments regarding “Islamisation” posted on social media attracted sustained criticism, while parents complained that they first heard about the ban through the media rather than the school…”

  21. French Leftists Complain Their Children Cannot Succeed in ‘Diverse’ Paris District Schools (breitbart, Jan 20, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/01/20/french-leftists-complain-children-diverse-paris-district/

“Leftist parents living in the heavily-migrant populated 18th arrondissement of Paris are finding themselves conflicted, as they want “diversity” yet complain that the schools in their “diverse” district are failing.
For many years, leftist couples have moved from the expensive centre of Paris to the heavily-migrant populated district, and now that they have children they have found the “mixed” schools in the areas to be substandard.

Indeed, schools in the area have become known as “ghetto schools” and many French now attempt to move their children elsewhere, French newspaper Liberation reports.

The paper, which conducted an investigation into the issue, claims that leftist parents do not want to “sacrifice” their child to their beliefs and many parents are putting the success of their children above their multicultural ideals.

Julien Grenet, a teacher at the Paris School of Economics, said: “You cannot blame them for saying no. What is shocking is that some parents, very intellectually armed, are blind and deny segregation with false arguments.”

Rising unemployment has led to parents becoming increasingly obsessed with getting their children into preferred schools.

Grenet said that the segregation of schools along cultural and ethnic lines is unlikely to change. “We have reached such a gap between some schools, it is difficult to go back and reintroduce the mixture,” he said.

The northern Paris districts, of which the 18th arrondissement is a part, have become increasingly more migrant-populated over the last several years, leading to a radical shift in culture.

Women who live in the area, in particular, have repeatedly complained of being sexually harassed by men from migrant backgrounds, to the point that some do not leave their homes.

In some areas, problems with crime and drugs have become so bad that drivers on the Paris Metro have decided not to stop at certain stations in the north of the city to protect the safety of their passengers.

Beyond the northern districts lie the notorious Paris suburbs known as the banlieues, which have been described on more than one occasion as no-go zones.

Riots and car burnings have become common in the banlieues during Bastille Day and New Year’s Eve, and they have also been a breeding ground for radical Islamic extremism for years.”

  22. MEMRI- Kuwaiti Writer: Israel Is a Legitimate State, Not an Occupier; There Was No Palestine

Kuwaiti writer Abdullah Al-Hadlaq said that Israel was an independent and legitimate sovereign state and that there was no occupation, but instead, “a people returning to its promised land.” “When the State of Israel was established in 1948, there was no state called ‘Palestine’,” said Al-Hadlaq.

He recalled that he had once written: “I wished that we could be like the people of the State of Israel, who rallied, down to the very last one, to defend a single Israeli soldier.”

In the interview, which was broadcast by the Kuwaiti Alrai TV channel on November 19, Al-Hadlaq further said that he believed in peaceful coexistence with Israel and envisioned a three-way alliance of Israel, the Arab Gulf states, and America “in order to annihilate Hizbullah beyond resurrection.”

The interview caused an uproar in the Arab media and social networks.

By Timothy Matthews – March 2009

      Excerpt:

To further the advance of their “quiet” cultural revolution — but giving us no ideas about their plans for the future — the School recommended (among other things):

      1. The creation of racism offences.
      2. Continual change to create confusion.
      3. The teaching of sex and homosexuality to children.
      4. The undermining of schools’ and teachers’ authority.
      5. Huge immigration to destroy identity.
      6. The promotion of excessive drinking.
      7. Emptying of churches.
      8. An unreliable legal system with bias against victims of crime.
      9. Dependency on the state or state benefits.
      10. Control and dumbing down of media.
      11. Encouraging the breakdown of the family.

  27. An eastern German city has imposed a temporary ban on new refugees in an effort to stem a number of recent violent incidents.

Cottbus, about 120 kilometres southeast of Berlin, has been rocked by violence from refugees and right-wing extremists since the start of this year.

Earlier this week, Brandenburg state police reported that two male Syrian teenagers were arrested under the suspicion of injuring a German teenager in the face with a knife.

  28. 19.01.2018 – 15:15
Frankfurt/Main (ots) – On January 11, 2018, an X-ray machine at a security checkpoint at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) indicated that the hand luggage of a U.S. passenger might contain explosive material. As required by law, the passenger screening agent called the German Federal Police for further aviation security procedures.

After completing the required manual check of the hand luggage, the police officers determined that the luggage did not contain any explosive material. However, the 49-year old passenger loosely transported several cosmetic articles in her hand luggage. The cosmetic articles were not packed in a transparent plastic bag, as required by EU and international regulations, and also exceeded the permitted allowance for liquids. As a solution, the officers suggested that the passenger store a roll-on deodorant item in her check-in luggage instead of her carry-on luggage – to remain within the allowance for liquids. Alternatively, she could voluntarily decide not to transport the deodorant and dispose of it on site.

The U.S. passenger reacted angrily towards these suggestions and became increasingly uncooperative. She began to insult the Federal Police officers, by calling them, among other names, “fucking bastards” and “fucking German Nazi police”, as witnesses can confirm.
