  1. Notes from NorseRadish:

    The Illusion of Radical Islam

This is a response to Richard’s excellent comment about, “Should the US Criminalize Radical Islam?

I am not sure how we can outlaw any type of Islam unless we can get it declared to be an ideology and not a theology, even then we would run into free speech issues.

This situation, just like Islam itself, is an all-or-nothing proposition. Be confident that there is ZERO irony in this fact—seeing as how Islam has been operating in a binary (i.e., Exclusive Or) mode ever since its inception.

Outlawing “radical” (yes, those are sneer quotes) Islam has a gigantic downside. Namely such judicial accreditation institutes an implicit legalization (and legitimizing) of “regular” Islam. The reality is that accepted, traditional Koranic doctrine is inherently violent and philosophically indistinguishable from so-called “radical” Islam.

Legal hairsplitting will cause more harm than good, as doing so would confer entirely inappropriate legal protections and make it even more difficult to eventually attain the ultimate goal of declaring Islam to be a political ideology (that it most certainly is).

Dr. Bill Warner is spot on with his concept of “reverse sharia”. It is a top priority to denude Islam of its religious camouflage and deprive it of all Constitutional protections. In reality, over a decade ago, Fjordman elucidated this idea in his 2006 essay, “Recommendations for the West“, with his concept of making the West “Islam-unfriendly”:

[A]bove all, the West, and indeed the non-Muslim world, should make our countries Islam-unfriendly and implement a policy of containment of Dar al-Islam. This is the most civilized thing we can do in order to save ourselves, but also to limit the loss of life among both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Across the years, ever since Fjordman wrote this, any of his hopes to “limit the [otherwise lamentable] loss of life” have continually shrunk in reciprocal proportion to the incipient violence that Islam exhibits. Few in the West manage to acknowledge this, much to everyone’s now and future loss.

“Reverse shariah” denotes a willingly resistance that defies this gruesome outcome. Nonetheless, without Islam’s sincere cooperation, all of this is, not just meaningless, but another senseless round of upping the butcher’s bill.

Casting aside just taqiyya (as if that was even possible) still does not absolve Muslims for voluntarily (passively or not) creating an interminable hellhole for the non-Islamic world.

Namely, the penalty that awaits such pure evil exceeds all normally allowable repercussions. Few forms of retaliation will be out of bounds when the time comes. This is the (somewhat heretofore) unexpected death knell of Islam. Pauvre petite!

  2. “The [Bulgarian] law, which amends the criminal code and passed the first reading in the parliament, criminalizes the promotion of radical Islam, including advocating for violent jihad, a caliphate and sharia law, Breitbart reported.” – Richard’s comment.

The last ever UK Conservative Government with Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister, had a Clause 28 to dissuade radical Homosexuals going after children: “The amendment was enacted on 24 May 1988, and stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.”
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28

Standing where the Bulgarians once were.

Protecting the minds of children did not happen. They are now the most triggered fatherless generation so far, just short of the Red Army.

A war of Darkness on three religious fronts: Communism, Fascism and Sexsquirrelity.

The resulting millions of good people who die, makes the Laws of Leviticus, very tame by comparison.

    • The UK standing where the Bulgarians once were.

What changed this was Diversity, the Common Purpose model of advancing under Positive Discrimination, Useful Idiots from the pool of darkness.

    • The [Bulgarian] law, which amends the criminal code and passed the first reading in the parliament, criminalizes the promotion of radical Islam, including advocating for violent jihad, a caliphate and sharia law…

      This is the entire problem.

The “promotion of radical Islam, including advocating for violent jihad, a caliphate and sharia law” is part and parcel of received and traditional Islamic doctrine.

Terrorist barbarity is as inseparable from Koranic canon as its triumphalist, supremacist objective.

Until all non-Muslim nations admit and recognize this one simple fact of life, there will persist this constant mishmash of cross-border conflict and relentless killing.

  4. Saudi Arabia to lift 35-year ban on cinemas (theguardian, Dec 11, 2017)
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/11/saudi-arabia-to-lift-35-year-ban-on-cinemas

“Saudi Arabia has announced it will lift a decades-long ban on cinemas as part of social reforms by the powerful crown prince that are shaking up the ultra-conservative kingdom.

“Commercial cinemas will be allowed to operate in the kingdom as of early 2018, for the first time in more than 35 years,” the culture and information ministry said in a statement on Monday, adding that the government would begin licensing venues immediately.

Reviving cinemas represents a paradigm shift for Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is promoting entertainment as part of sweeping changes known collectively as Vision 2030, which are being implemented despite opposition from conservatives.

“This marks a watershed moment in the development of the cultural economy in the kingdom,” the information minister, Awwad Alawwad, said in the statement.

Hardliners, who see cinemas as a threat to cultural and religious identity, were instrumental in shutting them down in the 1980s.

Saudi Arabia’s highest-ranking cleric spoke in January of the “depravity” of cinemas, saying they would corrupt morals, but the authorities appear to be shrugging off resistance.

Saudi filmmakers have long argued that a ban on cinemas does not make sense in the age of YouTube.

Saudi films have been making waves abroad, using the internet to circumvent distribution channels and the often stern gaze of state censors.”

“Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the partial withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria, during an unannounced visit there on Monday.

Mr Putin was met by Syrian President Bashar Assad as he arrived at the Russian Hmeimim air base, Interfax news agency reports.

He had already declared in March 2016 that he was planning to pull out the majority of Russian troops.

The Russian leader was also due for talks in Egypt and Turkey.

“I order the defence minister and the chief of general staff to start withdrawing the Russian group of troops to their permanent bases,” Mr Putin said, according to RIA Novosti news agency.

“I have taken a decision: a significant part of the Russian troop contingent located in Syria is returning home to Russia,” he added.

Mr Putin said that if “terrorists raise their heads again”, Russia would “carry out such strikes on them which they have never seen”.

“We will never forget the victims and losses suffered in the fight against terror both here in Syria and also in Russia,” he said.”

  7. Microbes by the ton: Officials see weapons threat as North Korea gains biotech expertise

Five months before North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006, U.S. intelligence officials sent a report to Congress warning that secret work also was underway on a biological weapon. The communist regime, which had long ago acquired the pathogens that cause smallpox and anthrax, had assembled teams of scientists but seemed to be lacking in certain technical skills, the report said.

“Pyongyang’s resources presently include a rudimentary biotechnology infrastructure,” the report by the director of national intelligence explained.

Seoul (AFP) – The US, South Korea and Japan carried out joint exercises Monday to track missiles from North Korea, as China warned that such manoeuvres fuel tensions following nuclear-armed Pyongyang’s longest-range test launch to date.

The trilateral drill comes less than two weeks after Pyongyang test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and declared it had achieved nuclear statehood, escalating global alarm over its weapons push.

  9. Strange new theme: Trump rejected mutual non-interference pact with Russia on elections
    By J.E. Dyer December 10, 2017

This article at BuzzFeed, from 8 December, is one of the oddest things I’ve come across in some time. It’s so full of little weirdnesses it seems like a parody. And it makes no overall sense, except as a sort of theme-planting exercise for the idea that we are in urgent need of an agreement with Russia to not interfere in each other’s elections.

The short version is that Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov met with Under Secretary of State Tom Shannon on 17 July 2017, and offered him a proposal for the agreement in question. This has been a secret until now.

U.S. officials reviewed the proposal – described as “sweeping” in terms of non-interference – and turned it down (apparently with polite comments about this not being the time to deliberate such initiatives).

  10. Secret Donors Funding Evan McMullin’s Ongoing War On Trump

Evan McMullin doesn’t want you to know who his donors are.

The failed Never Trump presidential candidate has stayed in the public eye as a sort of attack dog against President Trump and other Republicans, while keeping secret the names of the donors paying him to do so.

McMullin’s recently founded non-profit organization, Stand Up Republic, jumped into the Alabama Senate race this week with a $500,000 ad buy against Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore. One of the ads features a man saying Roy Moore “makes Republicans and us Christians look bad.”

The massive ad buy “may end up being one of the largest third-party interventions in the state,” according to the Washington Post.

  11. NFL stadium tickets plummet to unimaginable prices — see just how bad the protest damage is

Ratings and TV ad revenue has dropped, attendance has plummeted, but ticket sales may be hardest hit. Just a few years ago, tickets for even the stadium’s worst seats would run a fan in excess of $100. Now, you may be able to purchase tickets for less than what a gallon of gas costs.

According to Vivid Seats, a ticket reselling website, tickets for Sunday’s matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts sold for as little as $2. (Yes, you read that right.) Even the stadium’s best seats — in the lower part of the stadium near the 50-yard-line — were selling for just $29. Tickets at that level typically sell for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

    • Ratings and TV ad revenue has dropped, attendance has plummeted, but ticket sales may be hardest hit.

It’s about time! The off-field thuggery and scandalous collegiate athletic “scholarships” being provided for so many of these functional illiterates is an abject farce. See: The highest-paid public employee in 39 US states is either a football or men’s basketball coach.

This is an obscenity. First of all—unlike major league baseball—professional football has no genuine “minor leagues”. Its players routinely are drafted from NCAA football conferences. This means that, more often than not, American taxpayers are funding the “farm” for these multibillion-dollar commercial money machines.

The biggest pig at this publicly-funded trough is Nick Saban, who coaches the University of Alabama football team. He pulls down an annual salary of $7.09 million (with yearly bonuses worth another potential $700,000). That’s a minimum of $3,400 dollars per hour. If you don’t have a problem with that, more’s the pity.

Alabama’s public school test scores rank at third worst in the nation (see: Alabama’s schools third-worst in U.S.)—with only Mississippi and District of Columbia placing worse.

The notion of Alabama state taxpayers—in the midst of their educational drought—heaping money on someone that coordinates the intermittent movement of a one pound, 0.13 cubic foot, elliptical quasi-spheroid is beyond ridiculous.

Let the University of Alabama football team finance itself with revenues from licensing television broadcast rights, skybox subscriptions, t-shirt sales, and voluntary private endowments.

After all, U of A boosters paid off Nick Saban’s $3 million mortgage for him. Let these same rabid generous fans float this coach’s absurd salary (and team operating expense) so that meaningful public education might make some progress in The Yellowhammer State.

  14. Grooming gangs of Muslim men failed to integrate into British society

    [……………….]

Researchers, who analysed 264 convictions of grooming gang members since 2005, had initially expected to find Asians had been unfairly singled out.

However, they discovered that 222 of those convicted, or 84 per cent, were men of Asian origin. Only 22 were black and 18 were white with two offenders not having an identified ethnicity. The findings are in stark contrast to the fact Asians make up only seven per cent of the UK population, the report said.

Muna Adil, one of two authors, said: “We began thinking we would debunk the media narrative that Asians are over-represented in this specific crime. But, when the final numbers came in we were alarmed and dismayed. For both of us being of Pakistani heritage, this issue is deeply personal and deeply disturbing.”

The report, called ‘Group Based Child Sexual Exploitation: Dissecting Grooming Gangs’, notes how many of the gangs had operated in North of England towns and cities.

“When David Cameron spoke of the failings of multiculturalism in 2011 he was attacked from all sides,” Ms Adil continued. “What these critics failed to see was the numerous self-segregated northern towns, the plethora of organisations that preached problematic attitudes towards women and other faiths, and the hundreds of young men and women being radicalised right here on British soil.”

They found that while girls from the Asian community were seen as “protected” because chastity was linked to “family honour”, young white women were deemed “easy targets” and “open to sexual relationships with a little persuasion”.

They also identified how the men in the gangs had shared a common view of their sexual abuse, having collectively justified their behaviour.

Ms Adil added: “There are elements from within the British Pakistani community that still subscribe to outdated and sexist views of women embedded within their jaded interpretations of Islam. These backward views are passed down from generation to generation until the lines between faith and culture dissolve, making it increasingly difficult to criticise one without being seen as a critic of the other.”

The report also urges politicians and the police to dismiss political correctness and fears of being branded racist to ensure they can tackle the problem of grooming gangs head on……

  15. Gaza – Women of Islamic Jihad hold military march to protest Trump
he ‘Women’s Working Department’ of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine held a military march in Gaza City, Monday, to show their opposition to Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

SOT, Om Muhammad, Member of Islamic Jihad (Arabic): “We tell them that this decision is buried in the dump of history, this decision will never led us to fail and will not break our resolve; on the contrary, but increase our determination and the unity of our people. Where I speak [to call on] all the factions in this atmosphere and in the context of this decision to reject this decision and tell Israeli monkeys and pigs that we will not be quiet and we are one hand.”

SOT, Nafez Azzam, leader of Islamic Jihad (Arabic): “What is required of the Arab countries is much more than that, since they are able to use the pressure of papers that are in their hands, in the face of the injustice we are subjected to. And what happened to Jerusalem is not only a violation of the Palestinians but an aggression against all Arabs and Muslims and against every free human being in this world.”

  16. George Soros Funded Group Readying Trump’s Sexual Harassment Accusers To Push For Congressional Investigation
“Their disturbing allegations came to light before the post-Weinstein era of accountability for sexual misconduct and the rise of the #MeToo movement.”

A far-left activist group funded by George Soros is readying the women who accused President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct to demand a congressional investigation. The women had made their accusations just before the November 2016 election.

The women will speak on Monday at 10:30 a.m. ET to call for “accountability and an investigation by Congress of sexual misconduct.” They had accused Trump of “groping, fondling, forcibly kissing, humiliating and harassing women.”

The press conference was announced in a statement obtained by CBS News:

  17. President Trump: The Courage to Act

    by Douglas Murray
    December 11, 2017 at 5:30 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11525/trump-jerusalem-courage

President Trump’s announcement on the status of Jerusalem last week was both historic and commendable. Historic because it is the first time that an American president has not just acknowledged that the Israeli capital is Jerusalem but decided to act on that acknowledgement. Commendable for breaking a deceitful trend and accepting what will remain the reality on the ground in every imaginable future scenario. As many people have pointed out in recent days, there is not one prospective peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians in which Tel Aviv becomes the capital of the Jewish state.

Yet, the Palestinian leadership, much of the mainstream media, academia and the global diplomatic community take another view. They believe that the American president should have continued with the fairy tale and should never have said “That the United States recognises Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and that the United States Embassy to Israel will be relocated to Jerusalem as soon as practicable.” They claim that this is not a simple recognition of reality and not simply the American President granting the State of Israel the same right every other nation on the planet has — which is to have their capital where they like. Such forces claim that this is a “provocative” move. Amply demonstrating the illogic of this position, the first thing the Turkish Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan did after the American president made his announcement was to threaten a suspension of Turkish relations with Israel.

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11534/sweden-jews-firebombing

On Saturday, December 9, masked men threw firebombs at a synagogue in Gothenburg, Sweden. The attack took place shortly after 10:00 pm, at a time when about thirty children and teenagers were attending a party at the Jewish Center adjoining the main building. When the assault began, the guards rushed them into the cellar, and finally allowed them to go home at about 11:30 pm. (Guards, of course, are a fixture at European synagogues these days.) A mother of one of the girls at the party received a text message from her daughter saying that she was scared and that there was a smell of gasoline.

Yes, in Western Europe, in 2017, a group of young Jews stood huddled in a basement, helpless, amid the gasoline fumes from firebombs. (It is not clear whether the people guarding them were armed, or why, facing the threat of a possible conflagration, they chose to send them into a cellar.)

The Muslim Brotherhood has effectively declared war on the United States (Arabic link):

The Muslim Brotherhood is launching today a solidarity call with all Palestinian factions and Islamic movements to ignite an uprising throughout the Islamic world against the Zionist occupation and the American administration in support of the occupation and against the rights and freedoms of the peoples.

The last “uprising” some 15 years ago resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians – Christians, Jews and Muslims.

Police in New South Wales, Australia, warned nightclubs, restaurants, shopping centers and sports grounds they need to train staff to confront possible terrorists. Specifically “front of house” staff such a bartenders, cleaners and waiters need to know what to do if a terrorist strikes.

The advisory came ahead of planned celebrations for New Years Eve and in light of the arrest of Somali-Australian Ali Khalif Shire on suspicion of planning an ISIS-inspired attack. He is charged with attempting to obtain a semi-automatic rifle with intent to shoot innocent partygoers in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

“Frontline staff need to understand the plans (for a possible attack),” Senior Sergeant Rob Fleischer said, according to The Daily Mail. “A lot of times, it’s not going to be us (police) who are going to be dealing with the first five minutes. The first five minutes is front of house staff.”

Those staff need to be trained in how to react and how to help patrons escape, police said.

    • Are they going to let them be armed? Asking unarmed people to try and take out armed people is just telling them to commit suicide. Yes I know if they mass swarm the attacker fewer victims will die but it is still better to fight armed people with your own arms.

I think all of the regular readers know that I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and think that all nations should allow the people who want to be armed to carry weapons to defend themselves and others. The armed citizen, the Citizen Soldier, the Yoeman are all products of Europe, they come from European history and should become part of the future of all who love freedom. Yes the big government types will scream. Yes some of the police will scream (probably fewer then most people think) but let them. The police can’t be everywhere and the people who are not near the police need protection. When the police aren’t near it is up to the individual to defend themselves and their families.

Freemen are armed, slaves are unarmed.

By Rahim Hamid Monday, December 11, 2017

Iran’s theocratic regime, which has maintained power domestically via brutal oppression for over four decades, is continuing its devastating expansionist policies across the Middle East, paying no heed to the bloody results of its subversive policies.

The fallout from Iran’s policies is not limited to the terrible destruction in those regional nations where the regime has established a foothold, but also seems to be wreaking havoc on the Iranian state itself.

Iran’s regime and the entire country are isolated, exhausted, and militarily and financially stretched to their limit.

Recent indications suggest the regime’s regional clout is waning, with the proxy militias starting to fall out among themselves. Failure on the ground and rising public discontent among local populations (including the large minority populations) make it impossible for them to follow through with Iran’s political program.

  23. BREITBART –Wilders: The Pew Report on Muslim Migration to Europe is a Wake-up Call — It is Time to Get Tough

The bell is tolling for Europe. All the warning signs are turned on red. A demographic catastrophe is in the making. If Europe fails to make a stand, its Judeo-Christian civilization is about to be blown away.

Last week, the renowned Pew Research Center published updated figures about the growing Muslim population in the broader EU region (i.e. the 28 European Union member states plus Switzerland and Norway). The figures are truly dramatic. Unless there are radical changes to the present policies towards immigration, 30.6% of the population in Sweden will be Islamic by the middle of the century. Sweden is as good as finished.

But the situation elsewhere is hardly better. 19.7% in Germany, 18% in France, 17.2 % in Britain, and 15.2% in the Netherlands. This is what Pew expects to happen if the migration patterns continue at the 2014-2016 levels. Pew also calculated what will happen if the current refugee crisis comes to an end but regular immigration continues at present level.

Under this scenario, the number of Muslims by 2050 is still bound to rise to 20.5% in Sweden, 17.4% in France, 16.7% in the UK, 12.5% in the Netherlands, and 10.8% in Germany.

Last week, I posted a tweet with a picture from the Pew report, accompanied by the text “An existential problem: our population is being replaced. And it will get much worse if we don’t de-Islamise soon!” A few hours later, the tweet was censored in France. In the country of President Emmanuel Macron, the people are not allowed to know the truth.

The proliferation of Islam is bad news for Europe; the threat of Islamic terrorism is omnipresent. This Christmas season, concrete barriers have become a familiar sight around festive markets all over Western Europe.

But Europe has also become acquainted with female genital mutilation, honour killings, polygamy, rising anti-Semitism, and appalling examples of misogyny. Recent academic studies indicate that the vast majority of European Muslims find their Islamic rules more important than Europe’s secular democratic laws, while significant numbers (up to 11% in the Netherlands according to the University of Amsterdam) find it acceptable to use violence in the name of Islam.

More Islam means more violence and intolerance.

Unfortunately, Europe’s demographics might shift even more rapidly than Pew predicts. As Breitbart London pointed out, immigration trends tend to be at – and often beyond – the highest projections established by migration observatories. Moreover, Pew seems to be cautious in its calculations.

Last February, Elsevier Magazine, the Dutch equivalent of Newsweek, asked researchers to calculate what the effects of immigration would be for the Netherlands. They predicted that, in case of a ‘generous’ immigration policy, the Islamic population will surge from 7% today to 19% by 2060. In case of a continuation at the present levels, it will hit 14%. This is well over the Pew predictions.

  24. Greece to speed up migrant transfer after Turkey deal

Greece will speed up the relocation of thousands of migrants from its overcrowded islands to the mainland before the onset of winter after reaching a deal with Turkey, a key ally in helping to tackle Europe’s migration crisis, government sources said Dec. 11.

Athens persuaded Ankara last week to accept migrant returns from the mainland and not just from the Aegean islands as previously agreed under a 2016 EU-Turkey pact, one source told AFP.

The new agreement — reached during a two-day visit by President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an — aims to reduce the more than 15,000 people packed into refugee camps on the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Leros, another source said.

The camps are filled to triple their capacity, forcing many migrants to sleep in tents and creating tensions with locals.

Over a million people, mainly fleeing the civil war in Syria, crossed to Greece from Turkey in 2015 with the onset of the bloc’s worst migration crisis since World War II.

Last March, Ankara had pledged to take back illegal migrants landing on Greek islands in exchange for sweeteners including financial aid and eased EU visa rules for Turkish citizens.

The deal, criticized by rights groups, sharply reduced the number of migrants trying to cross the Aegean Sea.

However, the pace of migrant returns to Turkey fell dramatically after arrests of civil servants that followed last year’s failed coup attempt.

Until now, Greece has only been relocating populations deemed “vulnerable” — non-accompanied minors, single parents and victims of torture — to the mainland, exempt under the EU-Turkey pact.

The other illegal migrants are being kept on the islands until their deportation to Turkey, for fears that too many will try to travel north to wealthier EU nations.

Athens hopes that its deal with Ankara will help speed up the transfer of these people to Turkey via the mainland.

Meanwhile, Greece has already intensified its relocation of vulnerable persons to the mainland, transferring more than 1,000 in recent days.

In total over 3,500 people were moved between October and November, the migration ministry said.

According to Oxfam, 5,000 people are to be transferred from the islands in December, before temperatures drop.

Aid groups have repeatedly warned that transferring refugees to heated accommodation before winter is a matter of life and death.

Three refugees died last year in their tents on Lesbos from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning caused by makeshift stoves.

“This is a very positive step that will save lives,” said Nicola Bay, the head of Oxfam in Greece.

“Winter is just around the corner and thousands of refugees and migrants are still sharing unheated tents exposed to the bitter cold.”

Lesbos officials block ship with container homes for migrants in Greece

Authorities on the Greek island of Lesbos have blocked a ship carrying container homes for refugees and other migrants in protest at the refusal of the government and the EU to move more people to Greece’s mainland, AP said.

A government-chartered ship carrying the containers remained anchored at the island’s main town after municipal vehicles were used to block port facilities. The island’s municipal board was due to decide later Monday on whether to lift the blockade following talks with the government. Athens will speed up the relocation of thousands of migrants from its overcrowded islands to the mainland before the onset of winter, AFP cited government sources as saying Monday.

Greece persuaded Turkey last week to accept migrant returns from the mainland and not just from the Aegean Islands as previously agreed under a 2016 EU-Turkey pact, according to one source.

“An Italian man who drove his car last week into pedestrians near a Christmas market in the northern town of Sondrio had been aiming to kill.

Sondrio Prosecutor Claudio Gittardi confirmed Italian media reports Monday the suspect is being investigated for wanting to carry out a massacre. The car struck and seriously injured a woman Saturday at an outdoor skating rink near the Sondrio market before crashing into a pillar.

Two others who had been strolling in the pedestrian-only square suffered light injuries in the crash, which was originally blamed on drunk driving.

“As things stand, the incident seems to have been determined by personal dynamics and not with the aim of terrorism,” according to police who investigated, Gittardi said in an email to The AP. The prosecutor didn’t elaborate.

ANSA said the suspect, 27, when he was arrested at the scene, said that he “should have killed more” people.”

“A Somali journalist has been killed by a car bomb in the capital late Monday, says a fellow journalist.

Mohamed Ibrahim, a news presenter for Kalsan TV, died at a hospital after being injured by a bomb concealed in his car in Mogadishu’s Wadajir district, said Ahmed Mohamed, who works for the same broadcaster.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries for media workers. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 59 journalists have been killed since 1992, soon after a civil war began in this Horn of Africa nation. The deadliest year was 2012 when 18 journalists were killed.

It is believed that over the years several different groups have killed the journalists, including the Islamic extremist rebels of Al-Shabab, Somali warlords, criminals and possibly government agents.

Somali journalists frequently receive threats. But police rarely investigate the threats or murders or adequately protect reporters. Only one person has been convicted of killing a journalist and he was executed last year.”

  29. Amnesty accuses EU of complicity in Libya migrant abuse (abcnews, Dec 11, 2017)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/amnesty-accuses-eu-complicity-libya-migrant-abuse-51727506

“European Union countries are complicit in the abuse of migrants held in Libya, Amnesty International said in a report released Tuesday that accused the EU of turning a blind eye to allegedly brutal tactics of the Libyan coast guard and dangerous detention facilities.

The human rights group also alleged that the Libyan coast guard accepted kickbacks from smugglers to let migrant boats leave for Europe. Amnesty said it had video and other documentary evidence that a boat donated by Italy was involved in an interception operation in which up to 50 people drowned.

“European governments have not just been fully aware of these abuses,” Amnesty Europe Director John Dalhuisen said. “By actively supporting the Libyan authorities in stopping sea crossings and containing people in Libya, they are complicit in these crimes.”

Overwhelmed by the arrival of more than 1 million migrants in 2015, the EU has worked with Libya and its neighbors to cut off the main migration route from Africa to Europe. Its strategy has including training and equipping Libya’s coast guard to stop boats trying to make the dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossing.

The moves have trapped an estimated 20,000 migrants in Libya, where detention facilities are overcrowded and unsanitary, Amnesty International said.

EU officials have rejected criticism of Europe’s approach to curbing immigration and say the bloc’s money has been channeled into Libya through United Nations agencies. Only about 150 of Libya’s 3,000 coast guard members have received training sponsored by the bloc, the EU said.

The EU’s border agency, Frontex, reported Monday that the number of migrants making it to Europe through the central Mediterranean route from Libya to Italy dropped by one-third during the first 11 months of the year, to around 116,400, compared to the same period in 2016. Most were Nigerians, Frontex said.

Amnesty said the report was based on interviews with dozens of migrants and officials.

The group said it also reviewed video, photographs and documents showing that in at least one incident, the crew of a boat Italy donated to Libya’s coast guard failed to deploy lifeboats for migrants it encountered.

While trying to climb up the high sides of the vessel, the Ras Jadir, many passengers fell into the water and about 50 drowned, Amnesty said. Recordings also showed rescued migrants being whipped on the coast guard ship, the rights group alleged.

It said some migrants onboard jumped into the water to try to reach rafts deployed by a non-governmental organization’s rescue boat.

“European governments have shown where their true priorities lie: namely, the closure of the central Mediterranean route, with scant regard to the suffering caused,” Dalhuisen said.”

  31. ‘Almost Impossible to Monitor’: Female Genital Mutilation on the Rise in Ireland (sputniknews, Dec 11, 2017)
    https://sputniknews.com/society/201712111059911675-female-mutilation-on-the-rise-ireland/

“A Tuesday conference on violence against women in Ireland revealed that almost 6,000 women and girls in the country have endured female genital mutilation.

In 2016, about 5,790 women and girls living in Ireland were subjected to some type of genital mutilation, a 53 percent increase compared to 2013.

According to Alwiye Xuseyn, manager of the Akina Dada wa Africa-AkiDwA (Swahili for “Sisterhood”) organization, the estimates are based on 2016 data. The organization was established in Ireland in 2001 by a group of African women to support migrant women experiencing “isolation, racism and gender-based violence against women,” its website states.

Female genital mutilation or circumcision is the removal of part or all of the external female genitalia and is a common practice among certain communities in 29 countries in western, eastern and northeastern Africa. The rite is considered in some communities to be an essential part of a woman’s coming of age and is seen as a way of ensuring accepted community norms of sexual behavior and modesty and often a prerequisite for marriage.

It is considered a violation of human rights, as it can eliminate the possibility of sexual pleasure and can make sexual intercourse and childbirth painful and, in some cases, dangerous.

According to Dr. Katy Radford, director of the Institute for Conflict Resolution, the continued migration of women into Ireland from countries where female genital mutilation is performed has contributed to the rising numbers of women facing such violations.

Radford also told the Irish Times that it is “almost impossible to monitor” female genital mutilation because women may leave Ireland to have the procedure conducted in their home countries while on holiday.

“We are particularly uninformed about the extent of the practice. The safeguarding of girls and young women has to be a concern,” Radford said.

The conference held Tuesday, titled “Dare to Dialogue,” was hosted by Akina Dada wa Africa-AkiDwAto raise awareness and engage men and faith leaders in strategies to curb male violence against women.

Alan O’Neill, a member of the Men’s Development Network, an organization in Ireland that is committed to working in alliance with women’s organizations to improve the lives of men and women, revealed that his organization has been hosting workshops for men to educate them on “toxic masculinity,” male behaviours considered normal in patriarchal societies that are increasingly being seen as harmful to both men and women.

O’Neill also expressed his belief that changing how male and female roles are perceived in societies will take time.”

  35. Wilders: The Pew Report on Muslim Migration to Europe is a Wake-up Call — It is Time to Get Tough (breitbart, Dec 11, 2017)

  38. Fox News – Wife of demoted DOJ official worked for firm behind anti-Trump dossier

EXCLUSIVE: A senior Justice Department official demoted last week for concealing his meetings with the men behind the anti-Trump “dossier” had even closer ties to Fusion GPS, the firm responsible for the incendiary document, than have been disclosed, Fox News has confirmed: The official’s wife worked for Fusion GPS during the 2016 election.

Contacted by Fox News, investigators for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) confirmed that Nellie H. Ohr, wife of the demoted official, Bruce G. Ohr, worked for the opposition research firm last year. The precise nature of Mrs. Ohr’s duties – including whether she worked on the dossier – remains unclear but a review of her published works available online reveals Mrs. Ohr has written extensively on Russia-related subjects. HPSCI staff confirmed to Fox News that she was paid by Fusion GPS through the summer and fall of 2016.

Fusion GPS has attracted scrutiny because Republican lawmakers have spent the better part of this year investigating whether the dossier, which was funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, served as the basis for the Justice Department and the FBI to obtain FISA surveillance last year on a Trump campaign adviser named Carter Page.

“The House Intelligence Committee,” Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., told Fox News in a statement on Monday, “is looking into all facets of the connections between the Department of Justice and Fusion GPS, including Mr. Ohr.”

Until Dec. 6, when Fox News began making inquiries about him, Bruce Ohr held two titles at DOJ. He was, and remains, director of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force; but his other job was far more senior. Mr. Ohr held the rank of associate deputy attorney general, a post that gave him an office four doors down from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The day before Fox News reported that Mr. Ohr held his secret meetings last year with the founder of Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, and with Christopher Steele, the former British spy who compiled the dossier, the Justice Department stripped Ohr of his deputy title and ousted him from his fourth floor office at the building that DOJ insiders call “Main Justice.”

The Department of Justice has provided no public explanation for Ohr’s demotion. Officials inside the Department have told Fox News his wearing of two hats was “unusual,” but also confirm Ohr had withheld his contacts with the Fusion GPS men from colleagues at the DOJ.

Former FBI Director James Comey has described the dossier as a compendium of “salacious and unverified” allegations about then-candidate Donald Trump and his associates, including Page, a foreign policy adviser. The dossier was provided to the FBI in July 2016, shortly before then-candidate Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination. As Comey later testified, it was in that same month that the FBI began a counterintelligence probe of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The disclosure by Fox News that Bruce Ohr met with Simpson and Steele last year expanded the reach of the dossier’s creators from the FBI into the top echelons of the Justice Department. Initial investigation suggested that Steele, a longtime FBI informant whose contacts with Mr. Ohr are said to date back a decade, might have played the central role in putting Simpson together with the associate deputy attorney general. Now, the revelation that Mrs. Ohr worked for Simpson calls that account into question.

A review of open source materials shows Mrs. Ohr was described as a Russia expert at the Wilson Center, a Washington think tank, when she worked there, briefly, a decade ago. The Center’s website said her project focused on the experiences of Russian farmers during Stalin’s collectivization program and following the invasion of Russia by Nazi forces in 1941. She has also reviewed a number of books about twentieth century Russia, including Reconstructing the State: Personal Networks and Elite Identity in Soviet Russia (2000), by Gerald Easter, a political scientist at Boston College, and Bertrand M. Patenaude’s The Big Show in Bololand: The American Relief Expedition to Soviet Russia in the Famine of 1921 (2002).

Contacted by Fox News late Monday, DOJ officials declined to comment.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the ranking Democrat on the intelligence committee, declined to comment on the original disclosure about Mr. Ohr’s secret meetings, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Mrs. Ohr.

While Nunes has issued numerous subpoenas to DOJ and FBI relating to the dossier, and has threatened contempt-of-Congress citations against Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray for what congressional Republicans have termed “stonewalling” by the two agencies, Schiff has mostly objected to the demands for documents and witnesses, casting the entire dossier probe as innately political. “I think there’s a hope that if they can impeach Christopher Steele, and they can impeach the FBI and DOJ, maybe they can impeach the whole Russia investigation,” Schiff told MSNBC in September.
