    “‘The New Sultan: Erdo?an and the Crisis of Modern Turkey’ by Soner Ça?aptay (IB Tauris, 240 pages, $25)

    In 2014 Soner Ça?aptay published “The Rise of Turkey: The 21st Century’s First Muslim Power.” The book described Turkey as a dynamic force whose power had risen steadily over the past 20 years. It was not blind to the authoritarianism of President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, but it optimistically argued that a stable and democratic future was still up for grabs.

    Three years on Ça?aptay, director of the Turkish Research Program at the Washington Institute think tank, appears to have had a change of heart. The title of his new book, “The New Sultan: Erdo?an and the Crisis of Modern Turkey,” gives a darker prognosis. Such a sharp about-face illustrates the deterioration of Turkey’s image abroad in recent years. It has also prompted ridicule of the conventional wisdom spouted by think tank pundits.

    But the two books are not as simplistic as they appear at first glance. “The Rise of Turkey” was more skeptical about the country’s direction than its title suggested. “The New Sultan” pulls no punches in condemning Erdo?an’s policies, but it also gives a sensitive background context to his life and political upbringing. It does not make the reader any more optimistic.

    The book sketches Erdo?an’s upbringing in the tough Istanbul district of Kas?mpa?a. The son of a city ferryboat worker who migrated from Anatolia, as a boy Erdo?an sold simits on the streets and attended a conservative religious imam-hatip school. His rugged upbringing can still be seen in his mannerisms and speech today, appealing to many ordinary Turks proud that “he is one of us.”

    Ça?aptay charts how Erdo?an started out among nationalist Islamists in student politics of the 1970s. It was a turbulent decade in Turkey, as left-wing and right-wing groups waged bloody turf wars across the country. Cold War political Islam was defined by staunch anti-Communism and scepticism about the capitalist West, believing that both were stoking social and political turmoil.

    Political Islam was inadvertently helped by neoliberal economic measures and the official “Turkish-Islamic synthesis” ideology imposed after the 1980 military coup. Erdo?an rose gradually through the ranks of Islamist politics through the 1980s and his breakthrough came when he was elected Istanbul mayor in 1994. His municipal administration earned a reputation for pious competence, but in 1999 he was barred from politics and jailed after delivering a rabble rousing religious poem at a public rally. The ban was lifted and he became prime minister in 2003 after the new Justice and Development Party (AKP) entered office.

    In the AKP’s early years, optimists praised its apparent commitment to Turkey’s EU membership bid, liberal economic measures, and commitment to challenging the political influence of the military (often simplistically characterized as a “secular elite”). It also expanded health services and infrastructure, winning the hearts of many long-marginalized voters. The party included traditional center-right figures in its ranks and had the support of liberals hoping it would provide a positive “model” for the Middle East.

    Reality has turned out differently. A longer work is required to address the many twists of Erdo?an’s years in office, but Ça?aptay gives the general contours. This includes his close alliance then bitter break with the network of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, whose supporters are thought to have been behind last year’s military coup attempt. Ça?aptay is rightly harsh on both, describing their clash as a “raw power struggle” far removed from the self-righteous rhetoric of either side.

    Throughout Erdo?an’s career, every short-term setback has actually only empowered him in the long run. Casting himself as a victim boosts his appeal among Turkey’s conservatives. As Ça?aptay writes: “Erdo?an’s biggest strength as a politician and biggest weakness as a citizen is that despite being in tight control of the country, he feels as if he is still an outsider.” Today he has reached a sweet spot where he can wave away every unfortunate event as the work of dark forces trying to sabotage Turkey’s historic rise. This rallies enough support to keep him in power, but at the expense of an increasingly paranoid and unstable social fabric. The personality cult around Erdo?an today instrumentalizes Islam to serve a deep-seated ambition for prestige and national assertion as heir of the great Ottoman Empire.

    Erdo?an has also been far shrewder than his opponents. Ça?aptay writes about how today “the gap between various groups in the Turkish opposition can be wider than the gaps between Erdo?an and his opponents.” The president himself has deftly exploited and exacerbated these divisions, “extending an olive branch to one while persecuting the other.” His authoritarianism is the natural result of a worldview that sees only his movement as the true representative of “the people.” In true populist fashion, “detractors can only be representing foreign interests, acting as ‘proxies’ for outside actors,” writes Ça?aptay.

    The book strikes a pessimistic tone about Turkey’s future. Ça?aptay recognizes that the country has passed a dangerous Rubicon whereby Erdo?an and almost all government officials are today left with “no graceful way to exit the scene.” Amid swirling accusations of corruption and a wild spiral of repressions, many are now making zero sum calculations in which it is either public office or jail.

    This being the case, Ça?aptay’s sensible diagnosis for bringing Turkey back from the brink – recommitting to the EU and expanding rights and liberties for all – looks rather naïve. Ça?aptay suggests that Erdo?an’s “iron fist” rule has a natural limit considering the “growing number of middle-class Turks who increasingly want a free society.” This classic liberal theory may apply in some circumstances; it is doubtful whether reality will conform in today’s Turkey…”

    “There has been a sharp rise in the number of sexual assaults reported in Bavaria this year and many of the accused offenders are foreigners. But are the numbers plausible? Experts say no.

    It is rare that a cabinet meeting in the Bavarian chancellery makes headlines across Germany. And when the state’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, presented Bavaria’s latest crime statistics on September 12, they seemed quite positive: fewer break-ins, less theft – so far so good. But then came the bombshell.

    The number of rapes reported in the first half of 2017, he said, had increased by some 50 percent. Herrmann reported that 685 cases had been filed since the beginning of the year and that 126 of those involved foreign attackers. That particular statistic represents a rise of 90 percent over the same period last year, with 60 more cases having been registered in 2017.

    Those are shocking numbers indeed, but criminologists are not entirely willing to accept them as reliable. “The numbers are astonishing,” said Ralf Kölbel, a criminal justice expert at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University. He says that, in his estimation, they cannot possibly reflect the reality of the situation.

    A suspect is not a perpetrator

    How, then, can the sharp rise be explained? The numbers that Herrmann presented were preliminary statistics provided by the state’s Police Criminal Statistics unit (PKS). Police investigations are included in the data, which means that not only are convicted criminals represented but also preliminary suspects.

    But a suspect is not necessarily a perpetrator. When it comes to giving an accurate picture of crime rates, “crime suspect statistics are not very reliable,” explained Christian Pfeiffer, director of the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony.

    Foreigners more likely to be accused

    Willingness to press charges for sexual assault is very low. An analysis carried out by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs in 2012 found that only 8 percent of victims of sexual assault reported those attacks to police. Experts suspect that a great number of assaults that occur within the family or at the workplace go unreported.

    In cases in which the victim and perpetrator are strangers, however, the willingness to report crimes increases. “Foreigners are always more likely to face charges for violent acts than locals,” said Pfeiffer. His institute interviewed some 20,000 German youths for a study it published in 2017 on willingness to press charges.

    When it came to sexual assault, the study showed one major determining factor: Only 18 percent of victims said they would press charges if the perpetrator appeared to be a local but 44 percent said they would if the perpetrator appeared to be a foreigner. Such bias greatly skews the picture that statistics paint.

    Will new laws help?

    The sharp rise in crime numbers could also indicate an increased willingness to press charges, said legal expert Kölbel. That is actually a good sign. After the sexual assaults that took place in Cologne during New Year’s Eve celebrations in 2015, the topic became very public.

    “The discussion related to the phrase ‘no means no’ may have contributed to an increased willingness to report such crimes,” said Kölbel. That also applies to people that may have been victims in the past. Police generally only publish statistics on closed cases, so numbers do not necessarily relate to when a crime actually took place.

    Furthermore, changing criteria can also affect statistics. After the New Year’s Eve debacle in Cologne, sexual assault laws in Germany were toughened.

    Classic statistical pitfalls

    With the expansion of statutory offenses, more cases now fall into the category of sexual assault, thus more cases are also being investigated. Therefore, said Pfeiffer, a rise in cases was to be expected. So, now that the willingness to press charges has gone up, one also gets the impression that crime rates have in fact gone up, said statistician Walter Krämer from the Technical University of Dortmund. “That is one of the typical pitfalls of crime statistics.”

    There are also some statistical groups that simply cannot be compared: For instance, crime statistics differentiate between locals and immigrants, but those groups often represent very different groups when it comes to age and gender structure, said Pfeiffer.

    There are many young men among Germany’s immigrant population, but the local population is much older. In its 2016 “Crime in the Context of Immigration” report, the Federal Criminal Office (BKA) confirmed that the two groups could not be compared for exactly that reason.

    The power of numbers

    But why are numbers so quickly given credence? “Numbers exude a certain authority,” said Krämer, “and they often fit someone’s argument.”

    “Normally, half-year statistics are not published because they just aren’t reliable,” said criminologist Pfeiffer. “I get the impression that someone is using them because they fit the bill,” he added, “perhaps because we are in the middle of an election and one can score political points on the subject.”

    Simply looking at statistics without thinking about what they really represent can easily lead to false interpretations. After presenting his statistics, Bavarian Interior Minister Herrmann was quick to add that “our goal is to more effectively target perpetrators of sexual assault, also in asylum centers.” He continued by saying that one part of that targeting was “effectively limiting immigration and being consistent about deporting those who have been denied asylum.”

    Nevertheless, the minister was unable to provide any explanation for the statistical rise during the cabinet meeting. “Our police experts are currently working on a detailed analysis of the data,” said Herrmann.

    Krämer wasn’t surprised: “We are looking at the well-known phenomenon illustrating the fact that correlation and causality do not always have anything to do with one another,” he said, adding that may be the case but those numbers are already being used for political means.”

      On page 4 of the BKA study, it says that “the basis … of the situation is … incidents that are merely reported … in which at least one immigrant was identified as an offender.” So even if crime is committed by a refugee/migrant- it will not be reported as such when the perpetrator cannot be identified. The study only uses identified suspects and doesn’t count all the crime reported by “dark skinned foreigner” unless they find them and know who they are.

      The title “Crime in the Context of Immigration” is misleading. The Federal Criminal Police Office uses the term “immigration” in connection with asylum seekers, although immigrants are not asylum seekers, but migrants who enter Germany for work.

      The study officially admits refugee crime has increased by 42% compared to the previous year to 293,467 crimes committed by 174,438 suspects. This means that 804 offenses were committed EVERY DAY by refugees. There are 33 more crimes per hour now. These figures hide such serious cases as 385 offences (attempted murder) and 3,404 sexual offences.

      These figures represent only a part of the actual refugee criminality. For example, on page 2 it is stated that “suspects with a positively concluded asylum procedure (international / national protection and asylum seekers) are included under the heading “special permitted residency ” and they can not be taken into account in this situation.

      Here are the refugee groups, which are not included in the BKA study on refugee crime, according to the BKA’s own data:

      39,783 persons as asylum seekers,

      452,023 persons with refugee protection,

      37,301 persons with a residence permit for humanitarian reasons
      73,506 persons with a residence permit under special conditions (undocumented)

      This results in a total of 602,613 refugees/asylum seekers, which are deliberately not taken into account in the BKA study “Crime in the Context of Immigration”.

      Any crime, rape, sexual harassment, any stabbing, any bodily injury, robbery, homicide or murder committed by one of these 602,613 refugees is not listed in the BKA Statistics on “Refugee” Crime.

      These crimes are hidden from the public.

      Summary:

      The German federal government hides the crimes of 600,000 refugees and then disseminates this manipulated study of “refugee crime statistics” on all available media outlets throughout the country. Concerning the refugee crisis, the media once again proves to be a government appointed handler to spread falsified government propaganda.

    “A survey of Muslims in 15 European Union countries finds most are willing to embrace non-Muslims, but they often feel rebuffed by the majority populations of the places they live.

    The findings released Thursday by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights reflect the views of 10,527 Muslim immigrants and children of immigrants who were interviewed between October 2015 and July 2016.

    Nine out of 10 of those surveyed reported having non-Muslim friends and 92 percent said they tended to feel comfortable with neighbors of a different religious background.

    But more than half — 53 percent — said they had felt discriminated against when they looked for housing because of their names. On the employment front, 35 percent of the women who had looked for work felt discriminated against because of their clothing, compared to 4 percent for men.

    The people surveyed were over age 16 and had been living for at least a year in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Sweden, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

    Other findings from the survey included:

    — Nearly half of the respondents did not find interfaith marriage objectionable, with 48 percent reporting they would feel “totally comfortable” with a family member marrying a non-Muslim.

    While 17 percent said they would feel uncomfortable in that situation, the authors of the report summarizing the survey results said that compares with 30 percent of non-Muslims who said they would be uncomfortable if their child had a romantic relationship with a Muslim.

    — Outreach is often met with rejection and hostility. At the time of their survey interviews, 27 percent of respondents said they had experienced harassment because of their Muslim backgrounds during the previous 12 months. Another 2 percent reported being physically assaulted.

    — Of the Muslim women who wore headscarves or face veils, 31 percent reported harassment. Inappropriate staring or offensive gestures were reported by 39 percent of the women who wore the coverings, while 22 percent said they were targets of offensive comments and 2 percent said they were physically attacked. For women who did not wear veils or headscarves, harassment was experienced by 23 percent.

    The survey participants came from or had at least one parent originally Turkey, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Asia. In two countries, respondents also included Muslims from other countries outside Europe who had immigrated within the previous 10 years.

    The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights said the survey had “multiple margins of error” since results were calculated differently for each ethnic group and country and because Muslims living in areas with fewer immigrants may not have been reached.”

    Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has reportedly been headbutted by a man who did not support his views on same sex marriage during his visit to Launceston.

    Mr Abbott brushed the attack off while speaking to Andrew Bolt, but said it was a ‘reminder of how ugly [the same sex marriage] debate is getting’.

    ‘He wasn’t very good at it I’ve got to say, but he did make contact,’ Mr Abbott said.

    ‘The only damage was a very very slightly swollen lip.’

  12. S&P Cuts China’s Credit Rating, Citing Risk From Debt Growth

    &P Global Ratings cut China’s sovereign credit rating for the first time since 1999, citing the risks from soaring debt, and revised its outlook to stable from negative.

    The sovereign rating was cut by one step, to A+ from AA-, the company said in a statement late Thursday. The analysts also lowered their rating on three foreign banks that primarily operate in China, saying HSBC China, Hang Seng China and DBS Bank China Ltd. would be unlikely to avoid default should the nation default on its sovereign debt.

    “China’s prolonged period of strong credit growth has increased its economic and financial risks,” S&P said. “Although this credit growth had contributed to strong real gross domestic product growth and higher asset prices, we believe it has also diminished financial stability to some extent.”

    The downgrade, the second by a major ratings company this year, represents ebbing international confidence that China can strike a balance between maintaining economic growth and cleaning up its financial sector. The move may also be uncomfortable for Communist Party officials, who are just weeks away from their twice-a-decade leadership reshuffle.

    A federal appeals court will hear a case brought by Judicial Watch on Friday to make public draft indictments of Hillary Clinton from the Whitewater scandal in the 1990s.

    Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group that files Freedom of Information Act requests, wants copies of the documents that the National Archives and Records Administration has declined to release. It filed a FOIA request for the documents in March 2015 and in October 2015 the group sued for the 238 pages of responsive records.

    According to Judicial Watch: “The National Archives argues that the documents should be kept secret, citing grand jury secrecy and Clinton’s personal privacy.”

    Lockheed Martin has released new footage from tests with its laser weapon system, revealing how ‘Athena’ can deliver an invisible killing blow to take down an enemy drone.

    In the tests conducted last month at New Mexico’s White Sands Missile Range, the prototype weapon successfully shot down five unmanned Outlaw aircraft.

    The hair-raising footage shows the moment flames burst from the tails of the flying drones one by one before they plummet toward the ground, as the silent attack causes both loss of control and structural failure.

        That was state-of-the-art warhead reentry protection a few decades ago. Any ablative coatings would more readily permit thermal localization (i.e., tightly confined temperature accumulation) which would lead to a more rapid, energy or heat-related failure.

        The (typically ceramic) coatings used in space capsule reentry heat shields are meant to withstand a dispersed, or relatively evenly-spread, surface-to-atmosphere thermal interaction.

        While there would be some spreading (i.e., diffusion) of an electron or particle beam after several hundred miles of transmission, special technologies related to creating “tunnels” (e.g., a laser-induced plasma channel) and other countermeasures that deal with negative atmospheric effects upon DEWs (Directed Energy Weapons) still seek to focus a “spot-sized” grouping on whatever target vehicles are involved.

        Bathing a MIRV with any sort of directed energy takes much longer in terms of attaining catastrophic damage to the target. If anything, that would enable your own suggested model of ablative shielding. My money is on DEWs with highly focused (and exceptionally agile) beam-pointing systems.

        If you look at the various DEW delivery systems, all of them appear to have an aperture-size of well-less than a meter. This means that they are dedicated to beam diameters of a few centimeters, at best.

        All the same, please continue to propose whatever technologies you think may be of use. Serendipity is a priceless tool when it comes to brainstorming.

    A federal appeals court in Seattle ruled Tuesday that the force used by police in responding to a dangerous situation must be “proportional” to the threat they face. The ruling seriously compromises the Seattle Police Department’s ability to use firearms, which essentially makes them sitting ducks in confrontations where a suspect is known to be armed.

    The ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the use of force reforms put in place by federal mandates earlier this year that required police to use only “objectively reasonable force, proportional to the threat or urgency of the situation,” the Associated Press reports. The unanimous ruling strikes down a lawsuit filed by a group of more than 120 Seattle officers in May who claimed that the strict reforms infringe on an officer’s right to self defense and the Second Amendment.

    “The City of Seattle has a significant interest in regulating the use of department-issued firearms by its police officers,” Judge William Hayes wrote, adding that the policy “did not impose a substantial burden on plaintiffs’ right to use a firearm.”

  16. Study: Federal agencies routinely violate hiring laws; use work contracts to evade transparency

    Bureaucracies have successfully evaded congressional budget oversight for years by illegally hiring contract labor to take the place of employees, according to a Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) report released Tuesday.

    Bureaucracies commit thousands of felonies a day, misappropriating funds not approved by Congress and expanding agency influence at a time when government agencies should cut back.

    Bureaucracies freeze hiring new employees, ideally to stop expansion and cut costs, when under pressure to reform or adapt to budget cuts. Many agencies continue to grow despite budget cutbacks, however, by illegally hiring outside contract labor.

    “While contracting for these services is contrary to the law, this practice has become so ubiquitous in government that it passes without notice,” the CEI report’s author Robert Hanrahan wrote.

    Any labor that uses a “skill,” which is nearly every job in the federal government, is classified under “personal services” hiring. With few exceptions, agencies hiring without Congressional approval for the expenditures is illegal under a set of statutes known as the Anti Deficiency Act (ADA).

    The event costs $15 for white males, and $10 for everyone else
    A man behind a “justice-pricing” policy based on charging higher admission to white males attending the screening of his movie says he used a false name to promote it because he was concerned about a backlash that could risk his safety.

    Shiraz Higgins said Wednesday he has received death threats at an email account he created with the false name Sid Mohammed and admitted he used the pseudonym in an interview with The Canadian Press a day earlier.

    “I’ve been wanting to have a layer of safety between me and angry citizens in order to keep the tension from being completely locked in on me,” he said, adding he feels “silly” for using a false name.

    “I feel bad that it’s clearly made some people upset and that it has undermined the overall message that we’re sending out here,” said Higgins, who is also the director of “Building the Room.”

    “It’s clearly become very heated,” he said of the response, adding the policy was not about “retribution or putting white men in their place or something like.”
    ‘This is not a publicity stunt’

    However, Higgins, 27, said organizers of the premiere are sticking to their justice-pricing model to charge white males $15, while others pay $10 based on the purchasing power of individual groups and “price discrimination.”

    The 70-minute documentary-style movie is a behind-the-scenes look at comedians putting on a stand-up show, he said.

    “This is not a publicity stunt,” he said, adding organizers are “pushing forward because we believe it is an important piece of overall conversation that is happening in society right now.”

    Higgins said while there has been criticism, he has also heard from women who said they pay more than men for goods and services, including hair cuts and hygienic and cosmetic products.

    Organizers are considering “adaptations” to better reflect the reality of prices, but couldn’t say if they would be changed, he said.
    Theatre not consulted
    The Blue Bridge Theatre Society, owner of the 225-seat Roxy Theatre where the premiere is scheduled for Sept. 28, said Wednesday the venue was rented and the event was organized by the group showing the movie.

    Tickets would not be sold through the Blue Bridge box office system and neither ticket prices nor policies governing them have been established by the society, general manager Rebekah Johnson said in an email.

    “Blue Bridge was not at any time consulted regarding these policies and, had it been, would not have agreed, nor will it ever agree, to policies that are discriminatory towards any person,” Johnson said.
    She said Blue Bridge will review the issue at its next board meeting on Sept. 25.

    “While we deny any responsibility for the polices by the organizers of event, we are deeply regretful for any offence the polices may cause,” the statement said.

    Profits from the door will be donated to the Native Friendship Centre of Victoria and the Victoria Pride Society, Higgins said.

    He said the movie was funded by Telus Optik, which supports local filmmakers with grants.

    Following Israel’s lightning Six-Day War victory over the Arabs, Israel’s military leaders determined that the time was ripe for the acquisition of a new tank to meet the challenges of the modern battlefield. The Soviets had begun supplying the Arabs with more modern T-62 tanks and Israel needed to maintain its qualitative edge.

    After conducting extensive tests and trials and examining alternatives, the Israelis determined that the British Chieftain tank, Britain’s own successor to the venerable Centurion, would be best suited for Israel’s needs. In 1968 Britain’s Ministry of Defense agreed to the sale but the following year, the British Foreign Office, which had always maintained hostility toward the Jewish State, nixed the deal.

    Israel was outraged and its prime minister, Golda Meir, personally visited London to persuade Prime Minister Harold Wilson to change his mind, but to no avail. The Foreign Office was to have the last word on the matter. To add insult to injury, the British had agreed to sell Chieftain tanks to Israel’s enemies, including Libya!

    Britain’s perfidious conduct turned out to be a blessing in disguise, for it planted the seeds for the development of the Merkava tank, Israel’s own indigenously designed creation. In 1978, the Merkava was unveiled to the world and has undergone continuous improvements since that time. It is currently the mainstay of Israel’s vaunted armored corps, and is rated to be among the finest tanks in the world.

    Seth Cropsey served as Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations and now directs the Hudson Institute’s Center for American Seapower. Cropsey’s new book, Seablindness: How Political Neglect is Choking American Seapower and What to Do About It, targets policy makers at the highest level, and in the early going the former Naval Reserve officer clears up any misunderstanding about the title.

    Seablindness is a condition of “amnesia of strategic befuddlement” about the oceanic anchor of commerce and security for the United States and her allies. Seablindness is also the “dangerous condition of depleted seapower that existed as an administration elected in 2008 transferred power to the one that Americans chose in 2016.”

    Cropsey hopes the dangerous condition will not endure but there’s no denying the current reality. The U.S. fleet of 276 ships is the smallest since before World War I, more than a century ago. Modernization and momentum are in decline and the nation has lost its technical edge. A hollow military, as Leon Panetta noted, weakens our ability to respond to the threats in the world.

The show’s overall viewership of 11.4 million tied an all-time low; the key ratings demographic of 18-49 adults sunk 10 percent lower than last year’s historic low. Most of America had better things to do than watch a privileged cabal of left-wing, coastal one-percenters preening indulgently about their progressivism. Conservative actor James Wood had the response of the night to the Emmy ego-thon, noting that “the stunning lack of political diversity in Hollywood is interesting, when you consider their consumer base is so evenly divided.”

    Oscars’ abyss. Earlier this year, the Academy Awards show earned the second-lowest viewership ratings in its history. Program host Jimmy Kimmel and other celebs turned their stage and red carpet into Trump-bashing soapboxes for anti-cop rants, open borders pleas and Quran promotion.

    Box office beatdown. Hollywood’s summer movie season launched more duds than North Korea’s Rocket Man.     In a strongly worded address before the United Nations Wednesday, a Vatican spokesman denounced President Trump’s threats against North Korea as “deplorable.”

    Speaking in New York at the 10th Conference for the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, noted that the rising tensions over North Korea’s growing nuclear program “are of special urgency,” while sharply criticizing President Trump’s handling of the situation.

    “The international community must respond by seeking to revive negotiations,” Gallagher said. “The threat or use of military force have no place in countering proliferation, and the threat or use of nuclear weapons in countering nuclear proliferation are deplorable.”

    The Archbishop went on to say that building up a strong military—one or Mr. Trump’s stated priorities—is counterproductive and hearkens back to a Cold War mentality.

    JEDDAH: Religious and intellectual extremism will be tackled in a conference being organized by the Muslim World League (MWL) in New York starting today.

    Representatives of Islamic institutions, as well as scientific, intellectual and political participants from around the world have been invited to attend the two-day international conference, the MWL said in a statement on Friday.
    “Religious and intellectual extremism is an abnormal and isolated context, which the Islamic world fought before it fought others and harmed it before and more than others,” MWL Secretary-General Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa was quoted as saying in the statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

    Also to be discussed in the conference are the cultural contributions of the Islamic world, Islamic contribution to the promotion of world peace, the integration of Muslims in the US, the interrelationship between the US and the Islamic world, among other topics.

    Al-Issa said the MWL aims to “recall the civilization of Islam and its pioneering historical experience in opening up to other civilizations, which emphasizes the concepts of cultural exchange, inculcating the view of Islam based on righteousness, justice, charity, good dealing and good exchange.”
    Religious and intellectual extremism has little foothold in the Muslim world, according to the latest estimates, Al-Issa said, adding that “its popularity rate is only one to two hundred thousand.”

    He said “extremism will bet on anything in order to regain its strength and attract new elements such as betting on the provocations of counter-extremism or Islamophobia.”

  32. Push to unseal the draft Whitewater indictment against Hillary Clinton gets court date

    A federal appeals court will hear a case brought by Judicial Watch on Friday to make public draft indictments of Hillary Clinton from the Whitewater scandal in the 1990s.

    Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group that files Freedom of Information Act requests, wants copies of the documents that the National Archives and Records Administration has declined to release. It filed a FOIA request for the documents in March 2015 and in October 2015 the group sued for the 238 pages of responsive records.

    According to Judicial Watch: “The National Archives argues that the documents should be kept secret, citing grand jury secrecy and Clinton’s personal privacy.”

    But Judicial Watch says that because so much about the Whitewater case has already been made public, “there is no secrecy or privacy left to protect.”

    Meanwhile, according to reports from Herat province, a one and a half year old girl was killed by her father for refusing to go to him

    Reports from Herat and Helmand provinces state that two young girls were mercilessly killed in these provinces.

    Local officials in Helmand province stated that six men gang raped a 10-year-old girl and then beheaded her. Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesperson, said that two men were caught by the locals and they were trying to capture the rest.

    Meanwhile, according to reports from Herat province, a one and a half year old girl was killed by her father for refusing to go to him. Herat police said the incident occurred at ten in the morning on Sunday (Sep. 10) in the fourth district of the province. It is said that the perpetrator has fled now.

    Violence against women and girls has increased in the past few months in Afghanistan which is worrisome for women’s rights organizations in the country.

  34. Swiss indict three for alleged al-Qaeda propaganda films

    The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) has filed an indictment in the Federal Criminal Court against three committee members of the Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (ICCS). The OAG alleges that the accused broke federal laws banning support for Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and associated organisations.

    The ICCS describes itself as the country’s largest Islamic organisation and says it focuses on representing the local population. However, its 3,000 members make up less than 1% of the estimated 400,000 Muslims in Switzerland.

    ICCS spokesman Abdel Azziz Qaasim Illi, who told Reuters he was one of the three men charged, dismissed the case as a “political show trial”, and said authorities had misunderstood the video at the heart of the case.
    The indictment did not name the suspects, but the ICCS said in a statement the other two were its chairman, Nicolas Blancho, and its cultural production head, Naim Cherni.

    The specific allegation against Cherni is that between the end of September 2015 and mid-October 2015 he made films in Syria with a leading member of the banned terrorist organisation al-Qaeda in Syria, the OAG said in a statement on Thursday.

    The films were subsequently used as propaganda for the al-Qaeda member concerned, according to the OAG. Two videos were published on YouTube, both of which were endorsed by the head of the “public relations and information department” at the ICCS and actively promoted via social media and at a public event by all three accused: by the committee members mentioned and by the ICCS president.

    Qaasim Illi called the indictments “clearly politically motivated” and said the interview had been with a senior Saudi cleric who denied having links to al Qaeda.

    “The point of the interview was to counter [Islamic State] propaganda with a credible figure from the moderate Syrian rebel spectrum. The interview itself never concerned al-Qaeda,” he added in an email to Reuters.
    Jihad-motivated terrorism

    The OAG alleges that the accused offered the leading al-Qaeda member in question “a prominent multilingual multimedia platform from which to advantageously portray and promote both himself and the ideology of al-Qaeda, the terrorist organisation he represents”.

    The OAG claims to have proof that this increased the appeal of al-Qaeda to existing and potential members around the world, thus promoting the organisation’s criminal activities.

    “The present indictment documents the strict prosecution brought against all persons in Switzerland who attempt to take part in jihad-motivated terrorism, or who support this by means of propaganda,” the OAG said.
    Currently the OAG is conducting, with the support of the Swiss Federal Office of Police (fedpol), around 60 criminal proceedings as part of a series of prosecutions related to jihadist-motivated terrorism. The majority of these cases relate to propaganda in support of terrorist organisations.

    The OAG will submit its proposals for sentencing at the main hearing before the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona.

    From the first pink or blue babygro, parents treat boys and girls differently. It might be a conscious thing, it might not. But it has a major role to play in shaping children’s futures.

    By encouraging timeworn stereotypes – giving girls dolls to play with, or telling boys not to cry – we are reinforcing society’s expectations of gender roles.

    It’s a matter close to many hearts, including that of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is credited with creating the world’s first gender-balanced cabinet after he took power in 2015, and has campaigned on the importance of getting women into high-powered roles.

    The BBC recently followed a social experiment which attempted to find out what happens when you iron out the differences in the way boys and girls are treated.

    Bikers and babydolls

    Working with the London Psychometric Lab at University College London, the programme assessed differences in boys’ and girls’ behaviour and psychological traits, from confidence to self-esteem, empathy and social skills.

    While the experiment didn’t look to provide a definitive solution to inequality between men and women, it did demonstrate how unconscious gender bias can be. For example, when boys wore girl’s clothing and vice versa, unknowing adults automatically gave the “girls” dolls to play with, while the “boys” were encouraged to ride bikes.

    It also showed how children, even those as young as seven, are already influenced by stereotypes. One boy claimed men were better because they were “stronger and had more jobs”, while another stated that boys shouldn’t cry.

    On the programme, scientists argue there is no obvious neurological explanation for the gender divide, with no significant difference between male and female brains. Both are highly plastic and largely influenced by childhood experiences.

    Raising feminists

    Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos this year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained how he planned to raise both his sons and daughter as feminists.

    He said that his wife told him that as well as encouraging his daughter to be ambitious, he should “take as much effort to talk to his sons … about how he treats women and how he is going to grow up to be a feminist just like Dad”.

    While such attempts at closing the gender gap are laudable, the difficulties of promoting gender equality have been highlighted by a number of recent events to hit the news.

    A male Google engineer who tried to argue that biological differences accounted for the scarcity of women in technical and leadership roles in Silicon Valley, was given very little truck by many. However, there were also significant numbers who voiced agreement with him.

    Elsewhere, underlining the extent to which the toy industry actively drives the gender divide, US retailer Target announced in 2015 it would no longer label toys for boys or girls. Research has shown children actually show little gender preference for toys until they become old enough to feel peer pressure.

    The global gender gap

    The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2016 demonstrates how slowly the world is making progress towards equality between men and women.

    In fact, a year-on-year comparison shows that of 142 countries included in the report, only 68 increased their overall gender gap score compared to last year, while 74 saw it decrease.

    Gaps between women and men with regards to economic participation and political empowerment remain particularly acute.

    “When Rohingya Muslims fled persecution and slaughter in Myanmar in past decades, tens of thousands found refuge in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites. This time around, Muslim leaders from the Persian Gulf to Pakistan have offered little more than condemnation and urgently needed humanitarian aid.

    The lack of a stronger response by Muslim-majority countries partly comes down to their lucrative business interests in Southeast Asia, experts say. Much of the Middle East is also buckling under its own refugee crisis sparked by years of upheaval in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan.

    More than 500,000 people — roughly half the Rohingya Muslim population in Myanmar — have fled to neighboring Bangladesh over the past year, mostly in the last month. The United Nations human rights chief has described Myanmar’s military crackdown and allied Buddhist mob attacks as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”

    Saudi Arabia is already home to around a quarter-million Burmese people who took refuge in the kingdom under the late King Faisal in the 1960s. The kingdom pledged $15 million in aid to the Rohingya this week.

    As the world’s biggest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia competes with Russia to be China’s top crude supplier. Expanding its footprint there requires Myanmar’s help.

    A recently opened pipeline running through Myanmar , also known as Burma, carries oil from Arab countries and the Caucuses to China’s landlocked Yunnan Province. The 771-kilometer (479-mile) pipeline starts at the Bay of Bengal in western Myanmar’s Rakhine state, from where most of the Rohingya have been forced out.

    In 2011, a subsidiary of state oil giant Saudi Aramco and PetroChina, an arm of China’s state-owned CNPC, signed a deal to supply China’s southwestern Yunnan Province with up to 200,000 barrels per day of crude oil, just under half of the pipeline’s capacity.

    Saudi Aramco did not immediately respond to a request for comment on shipments through the pipeline.

    “One could argue that Saudi Arabia is less likely to be outspoken on this (Rohingya) issue because it actually relies on the Burmese government to protect the physical security of the pipeline,” said Bo Kong, a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies who has written about China’s global petroleum policy.

    The pipeline became operational in April following years of delays. It allows tankers to bypass the Strait of Malacca, cutting typical voyages by about seven days. A natural gas pipeline from Myanmar’s Shwe gas field runs alongside it.

    Daniel Wagner, founder of consulting firm Country Risk Solutions, said Saudi Arabia is moving ahead with its economic and political agenda in Mynamar and Southeast Asia, yet can still “claim to have stood the moral high-ground” by previously taking in refugees and providing financial aid.

    “The important point is that natural gas and oil flows through Rakhine state,” he said.

    Muslim-majority countries have been increasingly promising aid as the number of refugees swells in Bangladesh.

    Azerbaijan, which also appears to be exporting crude to China through the pipeline, has ordered 100 tons of humanitarian aid to be dispatched.

    Turkey, which like Iran jostles with Saudi Arabia to be the Islamic world’s center of influence, has mobilized millions of meals for refugees in Bangladesh and vowed to maintain a refugee camp there. It has also provided clothing, part of more than 150 tons of humanitarian aid supplied overall.

    Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, has sent at least 40 tons of aid. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently took a swipe at other Muslim countries with business interests in Myanmar, urging them to ramp up pressure on the government there.

    “There are tens of Muslim countries and governments, some of whom have financial and economic transactions with them,” he said. “If we sit somewhere and engage in condemnations, what is the use of this?”

    Images of burnt Muslim villages in Myanmar and of traumatized and often barefoot Rohingya women, children and elderly crossing into Bangladesh sparked protests in several Muslim countries.

    A large rally was held to denounce the crisis in Indonesia, which is working to boost bilateral trade with Myanmar to $1 billion a year.

    In Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi, tens of thousands protested. Lawmaker Farhatullah Babar of the Pakistan People’s Party has pushed his government to suspend or at least slow the implementation of defense agreements worth hundreds of millions of dollars with Myanmar.

    He told The Associated Press that an official responded to his request by saying Pakistan is pressing Myanmar through diplomatic channels to stop the violence.

    “Pakistan should not be seen as strengthening a regime that is using weapons against its own people,” Babar said. He declined to elaborate on the details of the defense agreements.

    A report by IHS Jane’s in February said Myanmar two years ago bought 16 JF-17 Thunder aircraft, co-developed by Pakistan and China. The defense weekly said Myanmar is now in advanced negotiations with Pakistan for licensed production of the fighter jet’s advanced third-generation variant.

    The 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation held an emergency session on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week to discuss the crisis.

    The organization, headquartered in Saudi Arabia, issued a lengthy statement earlier this month expressing “grave concern” over the exodus of Rohingya. But unless its member states take tougher action on their own, there is little the OIC can do to pressure Myanmar’s government.

    Jason von Meding, a specialist in disaster response at the University of Newcastle in Australia, said religious differences are not the only reason Rohingya are being forced out.

    The government in Myanmar has designated 3 million acres in Rakhine state for development of the area’s rich mineral resources, he said. Farmers and vulnerable minority groups in the state have protested such schemes, calling them land grabs for which they receive little to no compensation.

    “There’s no question that there is a lot of religious tension and ethnic division in society there,” von Meding said. “The problem is that it’s a convenient excuse for some people to get on with some very dirty political and business dealings behind the scenes.””

    The attorney general’s said it asked the Swiss division of Google Inc. — YouTube’s parent company — to delete the interview two years ago and said it was “annoying” that it remained online.

    “It is not in our power to delete it. It would be desirable if this were to change, particularly in the case of criminal proceedings such as this,” Lauber’s office wrote in an email. “This is a political question.”

    Land Registry records confirm that the house which was raided is jointly owned by Neil Hathi, 31, and his brother Sunil, 30, who both work as doctors and their mother Meenaxi Hathi.

    Mrs Hathi lives in a five bedroom detached house which has two Mercedes cars parked in the driveway in leafy Brockley Avenue in Stanmore, Middlesex.

    Her businessman husband Sudhir Hathi insisted that the family had no knowledge of the home being lived in by 35 people.

    “Visitors to the canteen of a major London hospital have been left with no choice but to eat halal food, a decision apparently taken despite the Muslim population of the local area being a small minority.

    Recent menu options at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, South East London, have included “halal shepherd’s pie” and “halal jerk chicken legs”.

    A spokesman for the National Health Service (NHS) hospital told Breitbart London that a private contractor was responsible for the restaurant, and “as the food in the restaurant is freshly prepared on site it is halal so that it caters for all visitors, staff, and patients who visit the restaurant”.

    The only other options for visitors and customers who might disagree with halal for animal welfare or other reasons are vegetarian meals…”

    “A former journalist who worked for the Swedish publicly funded broadcaster SVT has been shot in the Stockholm suburb of Tensta, known as one of the country’s most notorious no-go zones.

    The 29-year-old was shot just before 9 pm on Sunday evening in the heavily migrant populated suburb in the Swedish capital. He was found on the ground outside and quickly rushed to a hospital where it was discovered he had been shot in the leg but did not suffer from life-threatening injuries, Sveriges Radio reports.

    According to the broadcaster, the man was well known in the area and had worked on diversity and democracy projects. SVT editor Geronimo Åkerlund said that the victim had worked as a researcher for the broadcaster from 2016 up until the spring of 2017 in Rinkeby, another notorious no-go area…”

    “Only 75,000 of the 2.2 million people who sought asylum in Europe in 2015 and 2016 have been deported to their homelands after their claims were rejected, a report has found.

    More than half of the people who arrived during the migrant surge are still waiting for decisions on their asylum status, whilst those rejected are far more likely to “disappear” than be deported, according to a systematic study by the Pew Research Center.

    Just eight per cent of asylum applicants in 2015 and 2016 had their claims definitively rejected, but only 75,000 of 2.2 million newcomers — three per cent — have been deported according to the report, which estimates that 100,000 failed asylum seekers are likely to be living in Europe illegally.

    The study found that a third of the 52 per cent of migrants who were still waiting on decisions as of December 2016 were appealing the decision after being rejected, whilst the other two thirds had not yet had a decision made on their case.

    People from Albania, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Serbia, Iran, Iraq, Russia, and Pakistan were the most likely to be kept waiting.

    Although only two per cent of Albanian asylum claims are successful, just nine per cent who applied in 2015 and 2016 returned to their homelands whilst 89 per cent remained inside the EU, waiting for their initial application and appeal to go through.

    Countries in Europe granted asylum to an estimated 885,000 migrants who applied in the period, with people who said they were from Syria most likely to receive a positive decision.

    Almost half of Europe’s asylum applicants between 2015 and 2016 went to Germany, according to researchers, who also said that many of the people who initially applied in Hungary were so put off by its immigration system that they moved on to Austria and Germany.

    For some European countries, the sudden massive influx of migrants from the third world changed the demographics of those nations noticeably, Pew said, highlighting that immigrant shares of total populations increased by more than one percentage point in countries like Sweden and Austria between 2015 and 2016.”
