Anti-Donald-Trump protests turned into skirmishes with police in Phoenix on Tuesday, as cops unloaded on the crowds gathered outside his rally with tear gas.
In one wince-inducing moment screened on CBS5 and captured on Twitter, one protester – clad in a gas mask – kicked a canister of tear gas back at police.
Seconds later a cloud of dust mushroomed up from his groin and he doubled up in agony.
‘A guy just got shot with a rubber bullet,’ remarked one host, as the other lapsed into a pained silence.
‘So… er… yeah, the officers are not, are not messing around at all,’ the host stuttered as the stricken protester was dragged away by an ally.
He was just one of many caught up in the post-rally violence, as cops used nonlethal methods to disperse crowds who had thrown rocks and bottles at them.

CNN Reporter Outside Trump Rally Gets Tear-Gassed, Can Barely Speak
CNN’s Gary Tuchman, a correspondent on the ground in Phoenix, could barely speak to anchor Don Lemon after he got tear gassed.
“The police have deployed tear gas and some concussion ordinance that has startled people here. There hasn’t been any violence so far, that’s the good news. But the tear gas here is very acute. Most people have left,” Tuchman reported.
“But all of our faces right now are burning, all of our throats are burning,” Tuchman said.
“Why did it happen? I don’t know the answer,” he said.

Black Trump Supporter Punched While Fleeing Arizona Melee

A black supporter of President Donald Trump was punched in the face after leaving the president’s rally in Phoenix, Arizona Wednesday night.
A few thousand protesters showed up outside the event, and things were mostly peaceful until the end of the rally, when Trump supporters filtered out of the Phoenix Convention Center and police had to use tear gas to manage the crowds.
One violent clash between Trump supporters and protesters was caught on video by New York Times correspondent Simon Romero, showing a pickup truck packed with MAGA-hat-wearers arguing with protesters surrounding the truck.
In the video, one of the MAGA-hatters, a black man, restrains his friend following a shouting match with protesters, and the friend eventually gets into the driver’s seat of the truck while the black man hops in the bed with two others.

North Korea photos suggest new solid-fuel missile design
TOKYO (AP) — North Korea’s state media released photos Wednesday that appear to show the designs of one or possibly two new missiles.
Concept diagrams of the missiles were seen hanging on a wall behind leader Kim Jong Un while he visited a plant that makes solid-fuel engines for the country’s ballistic-missile program.
One of the photos clearly showed a diagram for a missile called “Pukguksong-3,” which appears to be the latest in its Pukguksong, or Polaris, series. The other was harder to discern, though it carried a “Hwasong,” or Mars, designation name.

New ISIS Threat to Spain: ‘War Has Not Been Fought and Gone’
A pro-ISIS media outlet that had threatened the “disbelievers” of Spain before last week’s attack issued a fresh warning over the weekend that jihad there “has not been fought and gone” and cells remain in Barcelona and beyond.
Fifteen people were killed and at least 130 injured Thursday when terrorists belonging to a local cell plowed a rented van through crowds on Las Ramblas, a long pedestrian mall in Barcelona. Jared Tucker, 43, of Walnut Creek, Calif., who was on his honeymoon, was one of those killed. The deceased and wounded came from 34 different countries.
The suspected driver of the van, Younes Abouyaaqoub, was shot by police today near a gas station 25 miles west of Barcelona. He was reportedly wearing a fake explosive vest. The cell of 12 men was reportedly in the attack-planning stages for six months and had amassed gas cans to use in vehicle attacks.

North Korea presses rocket program, but amid signs of drama easing
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered more solid-fuel rocket engines, state media reported on Wednesday, as he pursues nuclear and missile programs amid a standoff with Washington, but there were signs of tension easing.
The report carried by the KCNA news agency lacked the traditionally robust threats against the United States after weeks of unbridled acrimony, and U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about a possible improvement in relations.
“I respect the fact that he is starting to respect us,” Trump said of Kim at a raucous campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona.
“And maybe – probably not, but maybe – something positive can come about,” he said.
The KCNA report, about a visit by Kim to a chemical institute, came not long after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson appeared to make a peace overture, welcoming what he called recent restraint shown by the reclusive North.

Report: Navy to relieve Seventh Fleet commander after string of at-sea accidents

The U.S. Navy plans to remove a three-star admiral as commander of the Seventh Fleet in response to a recent string of deadly maritime accidents, according to U.S. officials.
Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin is expected to be relieved of command Wednesday, two officials familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal. The Navy reportedly did not offer comment.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collidedwith a large oil tanker early Monday morning in waters east of Singapore. As the tanker was over three times the size of the American warship, it punched a sizable hole in the hull of the destroyer. Five sailors were injured, and ten others were reported missing afterwards. Search and rescue teams have already found the remains of several sailors.
This is the fourth major incident in the region this year.

If you’re wondering about the significance of Rapid City, it is home to the largest tribute to four American presidents, carved into the face of Mt. Rushmore. Obama’s likeness, moreover, will be the latest in a series of all former presidents mounted on street corners throughout the city.
There’s just one problem with the plan. In 2007, a genealogical researcher determined that ancestors on Obama’s mother’s side were slave owners. (That’s probably true of ancestors on Obama’s father’s side as well, as slavery was once a large-scale industry in much of Africa and remains in practice in some countries to this day.)
And in these emotionally charged times, when many on the Left are clamoring for the removal of all reminders of the nation’s first president, you just can’t except any leader with a sinful past.

11 beheaded in Libya attack: Pro-Haftar forces
BENGHAZI: At least 11 people were beheaded today after an attack on a checkpoint controlled by Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar south of Tripoli, a spokesman for his forces said.
“At least nine soldiers were beheaded… in addition to two civilians” at the checkpoint about 500 kilometres (300 miles) south of Tripoli, Colonel Ahmad al-Mesmari said, blaming the Islamic State jihadist group for the gruesome attack.
No group has yet claimed the attack at dawn on a checkpoint run by Haftar’s forces in the Al-Jufra region.

Never before has the terrorist nation used a U.S. child to spout propaganda, this time aimed straight for the president. Who is he?
ISIS for the first time apparently used an American child in a propaganda video, a boy living in the so-called Islamic State.
“My message to Trump, the puppet of the Jews: Allah promised us victory, promised you defeat,” the child who gives his name as Yousef said amid ruins in the terrorist group’s Syrian capital, Raqqa. “This battle is not gonna end in Raqqa or Mosul. It’s gonna end in you lands.”
Yousef speaks in clear, unaccented English, but his real identity is unknown. Yousef said he moved to Syria from America with his family two years ago.
“My father’s an American soldier who fought the mujahideen in Iraq,” he said in the video.
Six of the 133 Americans arrested on ISIS-related charges have military backgrounds, according to statistics gathered by the George Washington University Program on Extremism. It is not known how many people with U.S. military backgrounds are fighting with ISIS abroad.
“While this is the first time they have used an American child speaking, it’s significant that he identifies his father as a former U.S. soldier and makes an overt threat to Trump,” Mia Bloom, a professor at Georgia State University who studies terrorist groups, told The Daily Beast. “The use of children in this way is intended to show the conflict is multi-generational. That even the kids are radicalized.”
Bloom’s research shows that children are used not just as propagandists but also as soldiers in the terrorist group’s operations. ISIS uses nearly two dozen children a month in operations, Bloom said.
It has also featured children propaganda videos in territories ranging from “Raqqa o Marawi,” Bloom added. Some of the children have speaking roles, while others carry out violent acts on camera. While the newest video does not show the boys setting out for a military operation, they are shown handling weapons.
“[Yousef] was clearly scripted and there were many takes in order to get the kid to complete the script,” Bloom said.
The boy reads a script about the unifying power of the caliphate for much of the video. He appears alongside a boy identified as his “best friend,” a Yazidi child taken from Sinjar and now being raised to be a soldier for ISIS.
Yousef and the boy live in the same house and are like brothers, they say.
ISIS has consistently sought to use westerners in propaganda videos geared towards the West. One of its most notorious propagandists was Mohammed Emwazi, better known as Jihadi John, who carried out multiple brutal videotaped executions cast as messages to the U.K., America, and their allies.
The use of members from abroad carries a dual purpose: To show potential recruits examples of people who have followed along the same path, and to show a Western audience that people from their midst are drawn to the terrorist group’s ideology. And the video seems to echo a shift in ISIS strategy. As the terrorist group continues to lose ground in Iraq and Syria, it relies more on supporters carrying out attacks in the West to maintain its relevancy.

NETHERLANDS – Leaked photo ends Amsterdam Police cover up; names Khalid Karmaoui as man ramming car through crowd, wounding eight
The Dutch weblog GeenStijl has just obtained and published the identity of the man who on Saturday, June 10th, wounded eight people (including three Israelis) when he ploughed his car through a crowd at the Station Square, right in front of Amsterdam Central station.
The Amsterdam Police force has thus far been reluctant to publish the perpetrator’s name, and had released him after four days of detention. The police also made the highly unlikely claim that there was no camera footage of the incident because all 15 camera’s surrounding the area had been in “pre-set modus”, which meant that they weren’t recording anything.
About the picture they published, GeenStijl writes:
“This picture has been taken from a screen which is showing the police system called Bluespot. It concerns the file of the so called “blood sugar driver” at the Station square. The file belongs to Khalid Karmaoui, born on 9 September in Casablanca, Morocco. The date, June 10, checks out. The licence plate, 04-XL-NN, checks out. And the police’s explanation that the driver was suffering from low blood sugar seems to be compatible with that day’s warm weather and his possible observance of the Ramadan.”
An Amsterdam Police spokesperson has now responded by saying the picture indeed seems to show a police system, and that they’re “taking this very seriously“.
By the way, Maarten van Dun, a Dutch reporter for the local Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool, came out on Twitter saying the man’s name had been known to journalists for a long time, but said that his newspaper decided that:
“Origin and background alone are never news. The same holds for this time.”
In other words: both the police and media withheld this information from the public.

Germany: ‘A car can still drive through’ – Cologne sets up stone barriers in tourist areas
German police placed stone blocks around the Cologne Cathedral and the city’s main train station, Wednesday, to protect against potential attacks.
Police and local authorities agreed to set up the barriers around the busy tourist locations. The blocks are intended as a preventative measure to stop any attempted van or car attacks, such as those occurring in last week’s Barcelona attack or last year’s Nice attack.
Local resident Maria remained sceptical about how effective the new measures would prove in the event of an attack. According to Maria, a small car could still fit through the barriers and lead to “the same consequences.”

Migrants protested the eviction four days ago of the Palazzo Curtatone building, which had been occupied by around 1,000 migrants in Curtatone Street, Rome, Wednesday.
The building had been occupied by migrants, reportedly mostly from Eritrea and Ethiopia, since October 2013. Around 500 police officers were involved in the evacuation operation.
During the protest the migrants hung banners reading “No! We are not terrorists. We want a house to live in.” They believe the municipality is yet to find an adequate solution to the problem.

Federal advertising ‘blacklist’ of websites includes far-right outlets
CBC News has obtained official list of more than 3,000 sites barred from receiving government ads
Right-wing outlets The Rebel and Breitbart, as well as the extreme-right website Daily Stormer are among more than 3,000 websites on an internal “blacklist” to ensure the federal government’s digital advertisements do not appear on sites promoting hate, porn, gambling and other subjects deemed unacceptable.
The expansive list also includes conservative news sites like the Drudge Report, the Washington Times, Gateway Pundit and the National Review, as well as many non-political websites, such as TMZ, Esquire and Cosmopolitan.
CBC News obtained a copy of a recent version of the list, dating from June, via an Access to Information request.
There are 3,071 websites on the current blacklist, which is maintained and regularly updated for the federal government by Cossette Media, the agency hired to place Ottawa’s ads online, on radio and TV and in newspapers. The vast majority of federal ad dollars is now directed to the web.
The released version of the blacklist is non-alphabetical and uncategorized, with no information about the date a website was added nor about the reasons for its inclusion.

“Categories have expanded, and sensitivities evolve over time.”
Boucher, whose department co-ordinates federal advertising, declined to respond when asked about the reason for inclusion of particular websites, including some that appear innocuous.
But sites can be blacklisted because they “have consistently underperformed in advertising campaigns,” he noted. “Sites may also be excluded if there have been comments or complaints about the content.”
Breitbart added in December
Breitbart, the U.S.-based ultra-right website to which Steve Bannon recently returned after his departure as U.S. President Donald Trump’s chief strategist, was added to the list last December after complaints.

The move followed a social media campaign by Sleeping Giants, a shadowy activist group that emerged on Facebook and Twitter last November and pressed corporations to pull their ads from Breitbart, which also runs several affiliated websites.
Sleeping Giants focused on the Canadian government after an ad for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission appeared on the site for three days, Nov. 28-30, 2016, before being pulled. Previously, ads for Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada had also appeared there.
And in May this year, Sleeping Giants launched a campaign urging corporations to pull ads from Canadian ultra-right site The Rebel.

A Jan. 4 ministerial briefing note for PSPC outlines “brand safety measures” for determining which websites are forbidden when government digital ads are purchased via networks such as the Google Display Network.
“For digital advertising that is purchased programmatically — that is, by a computer, based on a series of parameters — we developed a list of acceptable sites referred to as a whitelist,” says the document, also obtained by CBC News under Access to Information.

“For maximum safety, the whitelist is used in conjunction with a blacklist filter,” the document says.

Boucher said that among the screened-out sites are those dealing with crime, death, tragedy, military conflict, “juvenile/gross/bizarre content,” profanity, rough language, sexually suggestive content, sensational and shocking content, gambling and sensitive social issues.
The in-house blacklist is an extra layer of “brand safety” supplementing the exclusion criteria that the Google Display Network and other ad services impose on their own distribution networks for all clients.
Governments should not ‘pick favourites’
An expert on political branding warns that governments too often focus on delivering messages directly to their political bases, and that advertising can be misused as a partisan tool.

“Our governments should not be picking favourites,” said Memorial University of Newfoundland political scientist Alex Marland, author of last year’s Brand Command: Canadian Politics and Democracy in the Age of Message Control.
“And because of the choices of media, you can communicate information to some Canadians, and other Canadians are never contacted.”
Marland said the Liberal government needs to be clear on exactly how and why websites are put on a blacklist, based on public and transparent principles, and how those websites can get off the list.
Among other sometimes surprising inclusions on the blacklist: men’s magazine Maxim, lingerie seller La Vie en Rose, female-targeted blog Jezebel, the promotional site for erectile dysfunction drug Cialis, sports sites SB Nation and Barstool Sports, Auto Trader, India Times, Mayo Clinic.
