London Doctor Manish Shah Charged with 118 Sexual Offences Including Child Abuse (breitbart, Aug 3, 2017)

“London-based Dr. Manish Shah has been charged with 118 sexual offences including the abuse of a child under 13 years of age.
The 47-year-old doctor is accused of having assaulted 54 victims at a surgery in east London between 2004 and 2013, when he was first arrested.
His charges include 65 counts of assault by penetration, contrary to Section 2 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and 52 counts of sexual assault, contrary to section 3 of the Act.
In a statement published Wednesday night, the Metropolitan Police reported that Shah is also charged with one count of sexual assault on a child under 13, contrary to section 7 of the Act.
According to the Daily Mail, the doctor was first suspended by the General Medical Council in August 2014, a year after the council placed unspecified “interim conditions” on Shah, whose suspension has been extended only on an annual basis since.
Currently, NHS Choices lists him as working as a GP at North Avenue Surgery in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, although none of the charges relate to his time there and the surgery’s records have not been updated in nearly three years.
According to the website, Shah — who the Mail reports was not born in the UK — speaks Hindi and Gujarati in addition to English, and cites “family planning” as his main interest…”

Report: Half of Terror Plots in Germany by ‘Refugees’, Nation Targeted After Migrant Crisis (breitbart, Aug 3, 2017)

“More than half (54 per cent) of terror plots in Germany have involved asylum seekers and refugees since 2014 and the onset of the migrant crisis.
The report, by the Heritage Foundation think tank, found that attacks across Europe by foreign trained militants increased dramatically in 2016, following the height of the migrant influx, with Germany becoming a much more popular target.
“The increase in the threat to Germany is especially stark,” the report’s authors write. “There were no plots in Germany in 2014, and only two in 2015. In 2016, this increased eightfold.
“There is a straightforward reason for this: In 2015, Germany took in over 1 million refugees and 2016 saw a surge in plots involving refugees.”
Plots in Germany comprised just 5 per cent of those in Europe in 2015, shooting up to 27 per cent in 2016. In fact, the nation faced more plots in 2016 alone than in the decade and a half between 2000 and 2015, with civilian rather than government targets most common.
In total, 142 Islamism plots claimed 300 lives and more than 1,000 casualties, in 15 European nations, over the 29-month period studied by the think tank.
Across the continent, around 15 per cent of the plots (142) featured refugees and asylum seekers, implicated in either planning the attacks alone or as part of a larger cell.
The migrant planned attacks struck nine separate European countries, but mainly targeted Germany (12 of the 22 plots).
In 2014 and 2015, there were just three plots by foreign trained attackers in Europe, all linked to Iraq, with the most prominent example being the Paris attacks.
In 2016, however, the continent was struck by 16 such plots by migrants and foreign fighters, 11 targeting Germany.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel suspended the Dublin regulations and effectively opened the nation’s borders in 2015. Since then, Germany has taken far more migrants than any other European nation.
Before 2016 – the year after around a million asylum seekers poured into the nation – Germany was not targeted by those trained abroad, with France and the UK facing the most attacks of this nature, the report explains.
Yet, during 2016, 60 per cent of all plots in Germany were conducted or planned by foreign trained militants, all of whom had fought or trained in Syria.
In 15 of the 22 (68 per cent) plots hatched in Germany since 2014, one of the cell’s perpetrators was in direct contact with a foreign terror group.
This is disproportionately high when compared to rest of the continent, in which only 64 of the 142 plots (45 per cent) had one or more members known to have been in contact with such groups.
“The main source of this threat is from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), which has taken advantage of the refugee crisis in order to smuggle its operatives into Europe,” the report’s authors explained.”

Rotting Bodies Found in Dirty Mortuary
An Ohio mortuary has lost its license, at least temporarily, after officials found it to be in unsanitary condition.
State documents show that Premium Mortuary Services in Carlisle is being investigated for not refrigerating human remains.
Documents show one body was growing mold while another had begun to mummify.
The report also said maggots were found living in one of the decaying bodies.
They also said the facility had a “slight odor of decomposition” and several methods to mask the smell were being used, including car air fresheners hanging around.

China says India building up troops amid border stand off
BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday said India has been building up troops and repairing roads along its side of the border amid an increasingly tense stand-off in a remote frontier region beside the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.
The stand-off on a plateau next to the mountainous Indian state of Sikkim, which borders China, has ratcheted up tension between the neighbors, who share a 3,500-km (2,175-mile) frontier, large parts of which are disputed.
“It has already been more than a month since the incident, and India is still not only illegally remaining on Chinese territory, it is also repairing roads in the rear, stocking up supplies, massing a large number of armed personnel,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
“This is certainly not for peace.”

MANILA (Reuters) – Southeast Asian ministers meeting this week are set to avoid tackling the subject of Beijing’s arming and building of manmade South China Sea islands, preparing to endorse a framework for a code of conduct that is neither binding nor enforceable.
The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) has omitted references to China’s most controversial activities in its joint communique, a draft reviewed by Reuters shows.
In addition, a leaked blueprint for establishing an ASEAN-China code of maritime conduct does not call for it to be legally binding, or seek adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The two drafts highlight China’s growing regional clout at a time of uncertainty whether the new U.S. administration will try to check Beijing’s assertiveness in the disputed waters.

Three years since Islamic State attack, Yazidi wounds still open
SINJAR, Iraq (Reuters) – Iraq’s Yazidis marked three years since Islamic State launched what the United Nations said was a genocidal campaign against them on Thursday, but their ordeal is far from over despite the ouster of the jihadist fighters.
Militants were driven out of the last part of the Yazidi homeland in northern Iraq in May, but most have yet to return to villages they fled when Islamic State over-ran Sinjar in the summer of 2014, killing and capturing thousands because of their faith.
Nearly 3,000 Yazidi women and children remain in Islamic State captivity, and control over Sinjar is disputed by rival armed factions and their regional patrons. Justice for the crimes Yazidis suffered, including sexual enslavement, has also so far proved elusive.
“The Yazidis’ wound is still bleeding,” one man told Reuters at a ceremony attended by several thousand people including the mayor and other local dignitaries held at a temple at the foot of the mountain that dominates Sinjar.

Boston Globe notices the solar eclipse will be best viewed across counties won by Trump

The last time we caught up with Boston and map-based musings – admittedly a somewhat specialized topic – the Boston public schools were endeavoring to fight the scourge of racist map projections.
That actually adds a dollop of melancholy to the most recent eruption from Beantown, because it appears to the unaided eye that the Globe is using a racist map projection to illustrate its point about the upcoming solar eclipse. The map in the Globe’s story looks like a Lambert Conformal projection, which presumably is not as bad as a Mercator. But it fails to show that Africa is bigger than North America. Apparently they still have work to do, racist-map-projection-wise, there in the crown jewel of the Bay State.
But the news you can really use is that the Globe’s Matt Rocheleau has taken a hard look at the projected path of the solar eclipse coming up on 21 August, and determined that it’s nearly free of counties won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Narrated Abu Bakr: Allah’s Apostle said: “The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse because of the death of someone, but Allah frightens His devotees with them.”
Narrated Abu Musa: The sun eclipsed and the Prophet got up, being afraid that it might be the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment). He went to the Mosque and offered a prayer with the longest Qiyam, bowing and prostration that I had ever seen him doing. Then he said, “These signs which Allah sends do not occur because of the life or death of somebody, but Allah makes His worshipers afraid by them. So when you see anything thereof, proceed to remember Allah, invoke Him and ask for His forgiveness.”
HOW THE PRAYER IS PERFORMED
The eclipse prayer is offered in congregation.
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: When the sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle an announcement was made that a prayer was to be offered in congregation.
The eclipse prayer is two rakats (cycles of prayer).
Narrated Abu Bakr: In the lifetime of the Prophet the sun eclipsed and then he offered a two Rakat prayer.
Each rakat of the eclipse prayer has two bowings and two prostrations (for a total of four).
Narrated Aisha: The Prophet led us and performed four bowings in two Rakat during the solar eclipse, and the first Raka was longer.
Narrated ‘Aisha: In the life-time of Allah’s Apostle, the sun eclipsed, so he led the people in prayer, and stood up and performed a long Qiyam, then bowed for a long while. He stood up again and performed a long Qiyam but this time the period of standing was shorter than the first. He bowed again for a long time but shorter than the first one, then he prostrated and prolonged the prostration. He did the same in the second Raka as he did in the first and then finished the prayer; by then the sun (eclipse) had cleared.
He delivered the Khutba (sermon) and after praising and glorifying Allah he said, “The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse, remember Allah and say Takbir, pray and give Sadaqa (charity).”
In modern times, superstitions and fear surrounding solar and lunar eclipses have diminished. However, Muslims continue the tradition of praying during an eclipse, as a reminder that Allah Alone has power over all things, in the heavens and on earth.

Notes on a strategy to thwart Iran: Blocking the center

Last week, the Security Studies Group, Jim Hanson’s and Dave Reaboi’s next-gen think tank, published an excellent, well-organized article on Iran as the “first threat” America needs to address. The post is timely; many commentators are recognizing the urgent need for a grand strategy to deal with Iran, which packs a wallop with terror sponsorship, proxy wars, near-nuclearization, and the resources of a large nation-state to put behind radical, apocalyptic Islamism.
In analyzing the dimensions of the problem, the SSG article suggests the outlines of such a strategy. After looking at the vectors of the Iranian threat and the geography of the problem-set, the authors funnel down their recommendations (the ones in this post, at least) to address two key policy areas: the JCPOA, and the Iraq/Syria end game.
As regular readers know, I’ve written on these topics before, and specifically about U.S. interests in the Iraq/Syria end game, in particular as they relate to blocking Iran’s advance westward to the Mediterranean. The SSG article alludes to this advance by Iranian forces as a significant concern; it is what I want to discuss here.
Iran has been steadily making the advance since 2014, always on the pretext of fighting ISIS enclaves in Iraq. If Iran can effect the link-up she is clearly going for – holding the territory from Baghdad westward through the Euphrates Corridor, to Deir ez-Zor in Syria – Iran will have her choice of land approaches to the Med. Two routes, dovetailing through Damascus, lie across Syria. The other passes through Jordan. (Maps below.)

This article and the one above it by JE Dyer are very good, both address the same issue which is the need to prevent Iran from establishing control of enough of the Middle EastAs many people have stated Iran is trying to reestablish the Persian Empire, Erdogan is trying to reestablish the Ottoman Empire, Putin is trying to rebuild the Russian Empire by regaining control of the break away Republics and finally China is working to expand the Chinese Empire.
International Marxism has gained enough control of the educational systems in the Western Nations that they have suppressed the patriotism in those nations and have laid them open for the current Islamic Invasion. Contrary to the predictions by the talking heads it isn’t a given that the US will fall from the position of dominate nations or that the European nations will be conquered. What is a given is that we are facing many decades of turmoil as all of the players jockey for dominance in the world.

Asian group comes out in support of DOJ plan to curb affirmative action

Considering that Asians are penalized 50 points on their SAT scores, while blacks are awarded a 230-point bonus, is it any wonder that an Asian-American legal group is pleased with the announcement that the Department of Justice might examine affirmative action?
Lee Cheng, the co-founder and director of the Asian American Legal Foundation, spoke to The Daily Caller News Foundation about his hope that the DOJ will now be a partner in the fight against race-based policies in college admissions:
The New York Times reported late Tuesday on an internal DOJ memo asking lawyers in the civil rights division whether they are willing to perform “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.” The memo does not make absolutely clear what groups are affected by these affirmative action policies.

Footage released by the Italian coast guard agency showed police detaining and boarding the migrant rescue ship Iuventa at a port in Lampedusa, overnight on Tuesday.
The boat belonged to the German-run NGO Jugend Rettet and was seized as part of a parliament-agreed initiative to prevent the mostly African migration of people from Libya into Italy.

Spanish police officers detained members of an international smuggling network following a raid in Malaga, Thursday.
The gang has reportedly been issuing forged Spanish passports for Iranian immigrants, including children, so they are able to reach the United Kingdom.
During the raid, police discovered several Iranian passports, some equipment and around €1,300 ($1,544) in hard cash. According to reports, the immigrants paid roughly €25,000 ($29,707) for the documents and transfer to the United Kingdom.

SYRIA – 7,000 Syrian refugees and fighters return home from Lebanon
More than a hundred buses carrying thousands of al-Qaeda-linked fighters and Syrian refugees drove down a dirt road from Lebanon into Syria on Wednesday, in what was the last phase of an exchange deal between Syria’s al-Qaeda branch and Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group.
The departure of al-Qaeda fighters from the Lebanon-Syria border comes three years to the day its fighters stormed the Lebanese border town of Arsal and captured two dozen soldiers, killing some in captivity and releasing others. The group’s presence in Lebanon has left scores of people dead.
More than 7,000 Syrian refugees and gunmen, including a top al-Qaeda operative in Syria known as Abu Malek al-Talli, were aboard the 113 buses the left Lebanon’s Arsal region toward the Syrian border village of Fleeta, according to the government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media.
The militants and civilians final destination will be the jihadi-held part of northwestern Syria, according to an agreement between Lebanon, Syria, Hezbollah, and Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate. That group is known as the Hay’at Tahrir al Sham militant alliance — Arabic for the Levant Liberation Committee — or HTS.
“The Nusra Front was defeated in Lebanon,” said the announcer of Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV, using the old name of al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria.
The long line of buses drove through the partially paved mountain road between the two countries as Hezbollah fighters in beige uniforms and carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles watched them drive by. Masked gunmen could be seen inside the buses on the road that was decorated with Lebanese flags and yellow Hezbollah banners.
Hezbollah combatants have been fighting along Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces since 2013, and the Iran-backed group is still deeply involved in Syria’s civil war, now in its seventh year.
The evacuation deal followed a military offensive by Hezbollah fighters and Syrian troops during which they captured border areas between the two countries and left hundreds of al-Qaeda fighters besieged in a small rugged mountainous area.
The fighting ended with a cease-fire on July 27 for negotiations to allow refugees, fighters, and family members leave to Syria’s northwest Idlib province and the central Qalamoun region.
The three Hezbollah fighters were released shortly after midnight Wednesday by HTS in return for the release of three al-Qaeda fighters who were held in Lebanon.
As part of the deal, the two groups on Sunday exchanged the bodies of their dead fighters. Hezbollah handed over the bodies of nine al-Qaeda fighters in exchange for the bodies of five of its own.
The al-Qaeda faction will release five more Hezbollah fighters it is holding in Syria once the convoy of buses arrives in Idlib.
The large number of Syrians who decided to return home shows that some refugees prefer to head back to their war-torn country rather than stay in tent settlements in Lebanon. The tiny Arab country is home to about 1.2 million Syrian refugees, or a quarter of Lebanon’s population.
The U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, said in a statement that it is not part of the agreement that led to the latest evacuations. “UNHCR is not in a position to ascertain to what extent refugees, who are civilians by definition, are returning in this movement,” UNHCR said.
“In this context, UNHCR notes that refugee returns need to be individual decisions, based on objective information about the conditions in the place of intended return, and made free from undue pressure,” it added.
With the departure of HTS fighters from Lebanon, the Lebanese army is expected to soon launch an offensive on territories controlled by members of the Islamic State group.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri told reporters in Beirut that authorities are ready to negotiate to discover the fate of nine Lebanese soldiers who were captured by IS in August 2014 along with those taken by HTS.
“The presence of Daesh will end in Lebanon because the Lebanese army will deal with that,” Hariri said, using an Arabic acronym to refer to IS.

Buses set to transfer some 10,000 people from Lebanon to opposition-controlled Syria were sighted near the Syrian border village of Flitah, early on Wednesday, after Hezbollah, Lebanese authorities, and the Syrian militant group Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) brokered a mass refugee and prisoner swap.
As part of the deal, three Hezbollah fighters were reportedly released by the Salafist fighters in exchange for HTS-aligned militants captured by Lebanon, according to head of the country’s General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim.

FBI arrests WannaCry hero Marcus Hutchins in Las Vegas
The FBI has arrested Marcus Hutchins, the 23-year-old security expert who saved the NHS from cyber criminals earlier this year.
Hutchins was at a hacking conference in Las Vegas when he was arrested as part of an FBI investigation.
UK law enforcement and security agencies confirmed a British citizen has been arrested.
The young cyber expert was hailed as a saviour back in May for finding a kill switch for the WannaCry ransomware, which spread to more than 300,000 computers across 150 countries. Among the victims were dozens of NHS Trusts, which were forced to delay operations and turn people away.
Hutchins, who stopped the attack from his bedroom in his parents’ house under the pseudonym MalwareTech, has been working with GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre since the incident. The Centre said it was aware of the situation and that it was “inappropriate” to comment further on law enforcement matters.
Janet, his mother, told the Telegraph she was trying to find out exactly what had happened to her son but said she had not yet managed to get anything confirmed.
“I think I’m going to be rather busy tonight,” she added.
It is not clear why Hutchins has been arrested or if he will face charges in the US. The US Marshals office confirmed it was the FBI who arrested Hutchins.
“My colleague in Las Vegas said this was an FBI arrest. Mr Hutchins is not in US Marshals custody,” a spokesman for the office told Motherboard.
After his arrest Hutchins was taken to Henderson Detention Center in Nevada before being moved to another facility, according to Motherboard.
A security expert who was at the DefCon hacking conference with Hutchins told the Telegraph: “I finally located him but they moved him 10 minutes before visiting hours and now he’s in the wind again.”
They said they spent most of the conference with Hutchins and were sharing accommodation with until he disappeared for around 20 hours. Hutchins’ parents confirmed to the expert that he had been arrested.
The UK’s National Crime Agency said: “We are aware a UK national has been arrested but it’s a matter for the authorities in the US,” it said.

A letter from H.R. McMaster said Susan Rice will keep her top-secret security clearance
Almost one month after it was disclosed that former President Obama’s National Security Adviser Susan Rice was unmasking members of President Trump’s team and other Americans, Trump’s own national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, sent an official letter giving her unfettered and continuing access to classified information and waiving her “need-to-know” requirement on anything she viewed or received during her tenure, Circa has confirmed.
The undated and unclassified letter from McMaster was sent in the mail to Rice’s home during the last week of April. Trump was not aware of the letter or McMaster’s decision, according to two Senior West Wing officials and an intelligence official, who spoke to Circa on condition that they not be named.

“I hereby waive the requirement that you must have a ‘need-to-know’ to access any classified information contained in items you ‘originated, reviewed, signed or received while serving,’ as National Security Adviser,” the letter said. The letter also states that the “NSC will continue to work with you to ensure the appropriate security clearance documentation remains on file to allow you access to classified information.”
Circa revealed in March that during President Obama’s tenure, top aides — including Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch — routinely reviewed intelligence reports received from the National Security Agency’s incidental intercepts of Americans abroad. They were doing so by taking advantage of rules Obama relaxed starting in 2011 to help the government better fight terrorism, espionage by foreign enemies and hacking threats, according to documents obtained by Circa.
In June, the House Intelligence Committee subpoenaed Rice as part of the committee’s larger investigation into the unmasking of Americans under the Obama administration. Rice maintains that she never accessed the information inappropriately and has agreed to testify before the committee.
Under the law, and under certain conditions, it is common practice for some senior government officials to be given the unfettered access to classified information, and their “need to know” is waived under “Executive Order 13526 Section 4.4 Access by Historical Researchers and Certain Former Government Personnel.” But the White House officials told Circa that under the current congressional investigation, and given President Trump’s ongoing concern that members of his team were unmasked, Rice’s clearance should have been limited to congressional testimony only or revoked until the end of the investigation. Rice and Brennan have confirmed they sought the unredacted names of Americans in NSA-sourced intelligence reports, but insisted their requests were routine parts of their work and that they did nothing improper. Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power also has legal authority to unmask officials.
In a June tweet, Trump called the revelation that Rice and other Obama senior officials were unmasking members of his team the “big story… the ‘unmasking and surveillance’ that took place during the Obama administration.”
“Basically, this letter which was signed in the last week of April undercuts the president’s assertion that Susan Rice’s unmasking activity was inappropriate. In essence, anybody who committed a violation as she did would not be given access to classified information,” said a senior West Wing official, who was shown the document by Circa and verified its authenticity. “In fact, they would have their security clearance and right to ‘need-to-know’ stripped.”
“The point is, is that it lowers the bar for her,” the Senior West Wing official said.
“This memo McMaster sent to Rice makes it so that she doesn’t have to prove a continuing ‘need-to-know’ to have access to classified information and in effect is a White House pardon of Susan Rice and could be used by other Obama officials who conducted targeted unmasking of the campaign as a defense,” the official added.
The White House has not responded to requests for comment.
An intelligence official told Circa “that the NSA decision to provide this level of access to the subject of several ongoing investigations and to waive her ‘need-to-know’ requirement raises serious legal, moral and ethical concerns.”
According to information obtained by Circa, dozens of times in 2016, those intelligence reports identified Americans who were directly intercepted talking to foreign sources or who were the subject of conversations between two or more monitored foreign figures.
Sometimes Americans’ names were officially unmasked; other times they were so specifically described in the reports that their identities were readily discernible. Among those cleared to request and consume unmasked NSA-based intelligence reports about U.S. citizens were Rice, his Brennan and Lynch.
Shortly after Circa released the redacted documents disclosing the change in rules, it was revealed that Power had also extensively requested permission to unmask American names in incidental foreign intercepts.

zero hedge – Senators Unveil Two Bipartisan Bills To Block Trump Firing Mueller
Two separate bills – both with bipartisan backing from two Senate Judiciary Committee members – are being put forth to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s job. As NBC News reports, the new legislation aims to ensure the integrity of current and future independent investigations, and “ensuring that the special counsel cannot be removed improperly is critical to the integrity of his investigation.”
As a reminder, Mueller was appointed as special counsel following Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey. Mueller, who was Comey’s predecessor as FBI director, has assembled a team of prosecutors and lawyers with experience in financial fraud, national security and organized crime to investigate contacts between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
NBC News notes that Trump has been critical of Mueller since his appointment, and the president’s legal team is looking into potential conflicts surrounding the team Mueller has hired, including the backgrounds of members and political contributions by some members of his team to Hillary Clinton. He has also publicly warned Mueller that he would be out of bounds if he dug into the Trump family’s finances.
However, Mueller has strong support on Capitol Hill.
And now, as NBC reports, two bills are being unveiled – from within the Senate Juduciary Committee – blocking a president from firing any special counsel, without a federal judge’s approval if the president or his Administration is the center of the investigation.
Bill 1.
Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware plan to introduce the legislation Thursday. The bill would allow any special counsel for the Department of Justice to challenge his or her removal in court, with a review by a three-judge panel within 14 days of the challenge.
“It is critical that special counsels have the independence and resources they need to lead investigations,” Tillis said in a statement. “A back-end judicial review process to prevent unmerited removals of special counsels not only helps to ensure their investigatory independence, but also reaffirms our nation’s system of check and balances.”
“Ensuring that the special counsel cannot be removed improperly is critical to the integrity of his investigation,” Coons said.
Bill 2.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, another member of the judiciary panel, said last week that he was working on a similar bill that would prevent the firing of a special counsel without judicial review. Graham said then that firing Mueller “would precipitate a firestorm that would be unprecedented in proportions.”
Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey is also working on Graham’s legislation, according to Booker’s office. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, has yet to signal support for either measure.
So the difference is Tillis-Coons bill is ‘reactive’ – once the firing has taken place, it can be challenged; where as the Graham-Booker bill is pre-emptive – forcing the decision to fire a special prosecutor to a Federal judge (as a reminder, only the attorney general or the most senior Justice Department official in charge of the matter can actually fire the special counsel).
These bills had been generally expected.

Expansion beyond Flynn grand jury is a sign the investigation in election meddling is ramping up
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury in Washington to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections, a sign that his inquiry is growing in intensity and entering a new phase, according to people familiar with the matter.
The grand jury, which began its work in recent weeks, signals that Mr. Mueller’s inquiry will likely continue for months. Mr. Mueller is investigating Russia’s efforts to influence the 2016 election and whether President Donald Trump’s campaign or associates colluded with the Kremlin as part of that effort.
A spokesman for Mr. Mueller, Joshua Stueve, declined to comment. Moscow has denied seeking to influence the election, and Mr. Trump has vigorously disputed allegations of collusion. The president has called Mr. Mueller’s inquiry a “witch hunt.”
Ty Cobb, special counsel to the president, said he wasn’t aware that Mr. Mueller had started using a new grand jury. “Grand jury matters are typically secret,” Mr. Cobb said. “The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly.…The White House is committed to fully cooperating with Mr. Mueller.”
Before Mr. Mueller was tapped in May to be special counsel, federal prosecutors had been using at least one other grand jury, located in Alexandria, Va., to assist in their criminal investigation of Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser. That probe, which has been taken over by Mr. Mueller’s team, focuses on Mr. Flynn’s work in the private sector on behalf of foreign interests.
Grand juries are powerful investigative tools that allow prosecutors to subpoena documents, put witnesses under oath and seek indictments, if there is evidence of a crime. Legal experts said that the decision by Mr. Mueller to impanel a grand jury suggests he believes he will need to subpoena records and take testimony from witnesses.
A grand jury in Washington is also more convenient for Mr. Mueller and his 16 attorneys—they work just a few blocks from the U.S. federal courthouse where grand juries meet—than one that is 10 traffic-clogged miles away in Virginia.
“This is yet a further sign that there is a long-term, large-scale series of prosecutions being contemplated and being pursued by the special counsel,” said Stephen I. Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas. “If there was already a grand jury in Alexandria looking at Flynn, there would be no need to reinvent the wheel for the same guy. This suggests that the investigation is bigger and wider than Flynn, perhaps substantially so.”
Thomas Zeno, a federal prosecutor for 29 years before becoming a lawyer at the Squire Patton Boggs law firm, said the grand jury is “confirmation that this is a very vigorous investigation going on.”
“This doesn’t mean he is going to bring charges,” Mr. Zeno cautioned. “But it shows he is very serious. He wouldn’t do this if it were winding down.”
Another sign the investigation is ramping up: Greg Andres, a top partner in a powerhouse New York law firm, Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, has joined Mr. Mueller’s team.
Mr. Andres, a former top Justice Department official who also oversaw the criminal division of the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, wouldn’t leave his private-sector job for a low-level investigation, Mr. Zeno said.
“People like Greg Andres don’t leave private practice willy-nilly,” Mr. Zeno said. “The fact he is being added after couple of months shows how serious this is and that it could last a long time.”
Mr. Andres couldn’t be reached for comment.
The developments unfolded amid a new sign of concern by Congress that Mr. Mueller’s independence needs to be protected. Sens. Thom Tillis (R., N.C.) and Chris Coons (D., Del.) introduced legislation Thursday making it harder for Mr. Trump to fire Mr. Mueller. Under the legislation, a special counsel could challenge his or her removal, with a three-judge panel ruling within 14 days on whether the firing was justified.
If the panel found no good cause for the firing, the special counsel would immediately be reinstated. The legislation follows a similar effort from Sens. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and Cory Booker (D., N.J.)
“The introduction of two bills with two different bipartisan pairs strengthens the message that there is broad concern about this,” said Mr. Coons, who said that Mr. Tillis approached him on the Senate floor about teaming up on legislation.
According to a January report from the U.S. intelligence community, the highest levels of the Russian government were involved in directing the electoral interference. Its tactics included hacking state election systems; infiltrating and leaking information from party committees and political strategists; and disseminating through social media and other outlets negative stories about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and positive ones about Mr. Trump, the report said.
It is unclear how long Mr. Mueller’s investigation will last, and there is no deadline for its completion. The probe is complicated by the classified nature of much of the information Mr. Mueller’s team is reviewing. Evidence of its sensitivity came in June when Mr. Mueller moved from his temporary offices to a nearby secure facility that his representatives have declined to identify.
While working closely with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, Mr. Mueller has assembled a team of accomplished prosecutors and lawyers specializing in criminal and national security law. Twelve attorneys are on temporary assignment to the special counsel’s office from the Justice Department or FBI, and three came from Mr. Mueller’s firm of WilmerHale. Mr. Andres is the most recent addition.
Mr. Trump has questioned the neutrality of Mr. Mueller’s office, telling Fox News he is concerned that Mr. Mueller’s prosecutors are “Hillary Clinton supporters” and that Messrs. Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey are friends. Mr. Comey was a top Justice official in the George W. Bush administration when Mr. Mueller was the FBI director; both were appointed by Republicans. Mr. Trump fired Mr. Comey from the FBI position in May.
Those who know both men said they aren’t social friends, though they respect each other and had a solid relationship in government.
At least eight members of Mr. Mueller’s team have given to Democratic candidates, including the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Mrs. Clinton, according to Federal Election Commission records. At least one—James Quarles, a member of the Watergate Special Prosecution Force—has donated to politicians in both parties.
Mr. Andres in March supported a Democratic lawmaker, donating $2,700 to Kirsten Gillibrand, a U.S. senator representing New York, according federal campaign disclosure records.
Mr. Mueller made two contributions in 1996 to Republican William Weld, then a candidate for a U.S. senate seat in Massachusetts, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in politics.

“A suicide bomber has attacked a military convoy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing at least three civilians and injuring five US soldiers, officials say.
The attack is reported to have taken place in the city’s Qarabagh district.

For the most part, people share common goals. Most of us want poor people to enjoy higher standards of living, greater traffic safety, more world peace, greater racial harmony, cleaner air and water, and less crime. Despite the fact that people have common goals, we often see them grouped into contentious factions, fighting tooth and nail to promote polar opposite government policies in the name of achieving a commonly held goal. The conflict is centered around the means to achieve goals rather than the goals themselves. The policies that become law often have the unintended consequence of sabotaging the achievement of the stated goal.
Let’s look at a policy pushed by advocacy groups, politicians and poorly trained, perhaps dishonest, economists — mandated increases in the minimum wage. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman claimed in a 2014 interview with Business Insider that there is actually not much risk of significantly higher wages hurting workers. He argued that low-wage workers are in non-tradable industries for which production cannot be moved overseas and are in industries in which labor cannot be easily replaced by technology. Krugman’s vision is one that my George Mason University colleagues and I try to correct.

Police have released footage of two suspects on a moped moments after an acid attack in London.
A 47-year-old man was was targeted on Walton Place in Knightsbridge on Monday at around 8.30pm.
It is believed two men were attempting to rob him when a corrosive substance was thrown in his face.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and in hospital for minor injuries.
The Met Police have released footage which captures the aftermath of the incident.A number of passers-by stopped to help the victim and one wearing a helmet camera captured the suspects on a moped riding away from the scene.
The man is offered water by another person who stopped.
London has been hit by a surge in acid attacks, which have doubled in the past year.

Evergreen State College police chief resigns on heels of vile personal attacks by student protesters
Evergreen State College’s police chief has resigned after a tumultuous spring semester that featured protesting students who intimidated school officials — including the college president — and in effect took over the campus for brief period.
Stacy Brown had been on the job for less than a year, the News Tribune reported, and was subjected to vile personal attacks — literally from the moment she started.

Trump Department of Justice Connects the Dots
On the campaign trail last year, then-candidate Donald Trump drew the scorn of both liberal commentators and the open-borders lobby by pledging a crackdown on illegal alien crime in the United States. Much to their outrage, the Left is now waking up to the fact that this is one promise President Trump aims to keep.
Nominating U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama for Attorney General of the United States was the first sign that the President was serious. Attorney General Sessions left no doubt that business as usual at the Justice Department was over. “This is a new era. This is the Trump era,” proclaimed the new Attorney General.
Mr. Sessions immediately ended Obama’s illegal alien “catch and release” policy, which had turned the U.S.-Mexico border into a revolving door. The Attorney General’s pledge that, “The lawlessness, the abdication of the duty to enforce our laws, and the catch and release policies of the past are over” was music to the ears of taxpayers fed up with paying for the generous welfare benefits enjoyed by illegal aliens. Those planning on breaking into our country got the message: illegal border crossings in February 2017 declined 64 percent from February 2016.
The fact that Attorney General Sessions recognizes the role of transnational criminal organizations like the notorious MS-13 gang, which began in El Salvador, in fueling the illegal alien crime wave in America is a welcome change. Connecting those dots is something the Obama administration refused to do. Open borders and years of lax immigration enforcement mean the Attorney General has his work cut out. Fortunately, President Trump named the right man for the job.

FBI Study Is Telling About Policing in a Post-Ferguson America
The lie of Ferguson spread across America like a deadly virus and the police are now badly in need of a cure.
A frightening new FBI study offers a chilling view of police in retreat in a post-Ferguson world where politicians and media are seen as driving a destructive anti-cop narrative.
The FBI “Assailant Study” examined the forces behind the violent killings of more than 60 law enforcement officers in 2016, killings that reflected a 56 percent spike over police murders in 2015.
Some of the results were predictable: 86 percent of the 50 studied assailants had criminal histories, 18 percent had diagnosed mental health issues, 60 percent had histories of drug use, all of the killers were male and a substantial portion of the offenders felt they were going to lose their freedom by going back to prison. Then came the real news.
More than a quarter of assailants, twenty-eight percent or (14/50), expressed a desire to kill law officers prior to carrying out their deadly attacks. Their main reason: attacking police officers was their way to “get justice” for those who they believed were unjustly killed by law enforcement. Some tipped off friends or family about their intent to kill police. And, unsurprisingly, some of the assailants said they were influenced by the poisonous Black Lives Matter movement.
The FBI study also collected views of police officials. Nearly all of those contacted believed national political leaders publically stood against them and that the words and deeds of politicians emboldened criminals by signifying that disrespect of law enforcement was acceptable in the wake of the Ferguson, Missouri shooting of Michael Brown. Police officials also laid blame on news outlets and social media that exposed viewers to a steady narrative suggesting police wrong-doing and misconduct.
