The driver was arrested, and nearly 20 others rescued from the rig were hospitalized in dire condition, many with extreme dehydration and heatstroke, officials said.
“We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, calling it “a horrific tragedy.”
One U.S. official said Sunday evening that 17 of those rescued were being treated for injuries that were considered life-threatening. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the information has not been publicly released.

Democratic Kentucky state Sen. Julian Carroll was officially removed from his position as minority whip Sunday following a local news report that alleged the lawmaker groped a male staffer in 2005.
The Senate Democratic caucus formally voted to remove Carroll and called for him to resign his office, according to a Spectrum News report.

Pakistani-born Imran Awan, long-time right-hand IT aide to the former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman, has since desperately tried to get the hard drives back, the individual told The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group.
A high-level congressional source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the probe, confirmed that the FBI has joined what Politico previously described as a Capitol Police criminal probe into “serious, potentially illegal, violations on the House IT network” by Imran and three of his relatives, who had access to the emails and files of the more than two dozen House Democrats who employed them on a part-time basis.

On Friday, the Wichita Eagle reported that Gypsy Freeman, a woman who splits her time between Wichita, Kan., and Florida, was declared winner of a national art contest sponsored by tattoo artist of the stars, Kat Von D, who also has a line of beauty products. Freeman was set to receive a prize package worth about $2,100. That is, until an Instragram user found a post on her page supporting Donald Trump. Once that was made known to the company, Freeman reportedly received a message from Kat Von D’s Instragram account informing her that she had been disqualified.

More than 60 Islamic leaders and imams — from France, Belgium, Britain, Tunisia, and of different Islamic faiths — in a move that may be unprecedented, are touring Europe to denounce Islamic terrorism and to pay homage to the victims of terror in Europe by visiting many of the sites of terror attacks.
It is ironic that while the “liberal” world has been busy in Canada lavishing millions on the “Foreign Terrorist Fighter” Omar Khadr, and in the US pampering extremists such as Linda Sarsour — an apologist for ISIS and Islamist terrorism who calls for a “jihad” on the president, and whose tweets include racist comments such as “How many times to we have to tell White women that we do not need to be saved by them? Is there a code language I need to use to get thru?” — that the press has largely ignored these courageous Islamic leaders. MONTREAL – Baby dies, man arrested after brutal Montreal North stabbing
A baby has died and a man has been arrested hours after a pregnant woman was brutally stabbed in a home in Montreal North Monday morning. This story will be updated as information becomes available.
A few hours before a pregnant woman was stabbed in Montreal North, police had urged her to “go to a safe place like a shelter or with some relatives,” Montreal police said Monday.
About 2:30 a.m. Monday, the woman, who was eight months pregnant, was stabbed several times and was rushed to hospital after neighbours in her building on Langelier Blvd. near Pascal St. called 911.
Her child was delivered by emergency C-section, but died within a few hours, police said. A man has been arrested and while prosecutors will decide what charges he could face, a police spokesman said he might face a murder charge.
The woman had called police at 10 p.m. Sunday to report a case of conjugal violence. The man was not present when police arrived, but officers filled out a report to press charges against her 37-year-old partner. Her two other children were removed from the home. “Police officers took a report and were looking for that man,” said police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.
Police told the woman to call 911 if the man returned.
Noella Bernier, a neighbour, said she heard knocking on her door and screaming early Monday.
“I opened my door, she was screaming,” Bernier said. “I called 911. She was wounded and there was blood all over her. Blood on her stomach. She was pregnant, she told me she was in her last month.”
“He is always smiling and would often say hello,” said Stanley Sainey, who lives in the same apartment building. “When I saw his car was gone I figured it out. I was very surprised by this news because I didn’t know there was violence in that relationship.”
Sainey said he rarely spoke to the victim because “she is very quiet and doesn’t talk a lot.”
However, he confirmed that police had been at the apartment several times since the couple moved in last December. “I saw the police going up the stairs but I didn’t know what it was about.”
A woman who lives across the street said she has put her condo up for sale because there is too much trouble and noise on the street.
Police believe the suspect tried to commit a robbery at a dépanneur in Rosemont sometime after the stabbing.

In the most vocal opposition to president Donald Trump yet, former CIA Director John Brennan said that if the White House tries to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, government officials should refuse to follow the president orders, as they would be – in his view – “inconsistent” with the duties of the executive branch.
“I think it’s the obligation of some executive branch officials to refuse to carry that out. I would just hope that this is not going to be a partisan issue. That Republicans, Democrats are going to see that the future of this government is at stake and something needs to be done for the good of the future,” Brennan told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer at the Aspen Security Forum, effectively calling for a coup against the president should Trump give the order to fire Mueller.
Brennan appeared alongside his former colleague, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and both men who served in the Obama administration, told Blitzer they have total confidence in Mueller. “Absolutely. It was an inspired choice- they don’t come any better, ” Brennan said adding that “If Mueller is fired, I hope our elected reps will stand up and say enough is enough.” Some have responded with questions where Brennan’s devotion to the Constitution was in the aftermath of the events in Benghazi.
Falling back on his neocon roots, James Clapper, who has waged a long-running vendetta with Trump, once again warned about Russian interference in US affairs. When asked about the June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort with a Russian lawyer and others, he responded: “I’m an old school, Cold War warrior and all that – so I have, there’s truth in advertising, great suspicions about the Russians and what they do. A lot of this to me had kind of the standard textbook tradecraft long deployed by Russians. It would have been a really good idea maybe to have vetted whoever they were meeting with.”
Clapper was also asked about Trump’s comparison of the intelligence community to Nazi Germany. Clapper said he called the President-elect nine days before he left the Obama administration saying he “couldn’t let that reference pass” and it was an insult to him, CIA Director John Brennan and the workforce. “That was a terrible, insulting affront, not just to me or John, we get paid the big bucks, but I’m talking about the rank and file, men and women, patriots and intelligence community — that was completely inappropriate and over the top – I had to do something about it.”
And so he did: on the call Clapper said Trump asked him to “to put out a statement rebutting the contents of the dossier which I couldn’t and wouldn’t do. It was kind of transactional” referring to a dossier that alleged ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia. It was not clear if he wouldn’t and couldn’t do it because the contents were legitimate, in his view, or because the dossier is what started the whole “Russian collusion” narrative in the first place. Curiously, Clapper saw it as a favor to Trump not to issue a statement: Clapper was asked by Blitzer why he didn’t put out a statement replying: “The whole point of the dossier by the way was we felt an obligation to warn him to alert him to the fact it was out there. That was the whole point.”
It was not clear if James Comey, whose subsequent leak to the NYT led to the appointment of Mueller, would have applied the same reasoning when asked by Trump to rebut the dossier’s contents.

Tillerson has a growing list of differences with the White House, including a new debate over Iran policy and personnel. His frustration is hardly a secret and it has spilled out publicly at times. But friends sense a change of late.
For weeks, conversations with Tillerson friends outside of Washington have left the impression that he, despite his frustrations, was determined to stay on the job at least through the end of the year. That would allow time to continue efforts to reorganize the State Department and would mean he could claim to have put in a year as America’s top diplomat.
But two sources who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity over the weekend said they would not be surprised if there was a “Rexit” from Foggy Bottom sooner that that.
Both of these sources are familiar with Tillerson conversations with friends outside Washington. Both said there was a noticeable increase in the secretary’s frustration and his doubts that the tug-of-war with the White House would subside anytime soon. They also acknowledged it could have been venting after a tough week, a suggestion several DC-based sources made when asked if they saw evidence Tillerson was looking for an exit strategy.
Amusingly, Trump supporters seem to be elated with the specter of this news. It seems that most supporters of the President are disenfranchised with the President’s cabinet picks, save Bannon — which begs the question: if Trump is such a good delegator, why the hell did he make so many poor choices for his cabinet?
Anti-Trumpsters and deep state shills are actively circle jerking over each and every negative White House rumor, with their eyes fixed on the grande prize: a Trump impeachment.

army foils major car bomb attack on checkpoint in North Sinai: Spokesperson
Seven civilians were killed when a 4×4 vehicle laden with explosives approaching an army checkpoint south of Al-Arish in North Sinai exploded after it was run over by an army tank to stop an imminent attack on the checkpoint on Monday evening, the army spokesman reported on his official Facebook page.
The 4×4 vehicle, which exploded on the scene, was carrying five suspected militants armed with guns and 100 kilograms of explosives, the army said.
The victims included two women and two children.
The aborted attack could have killed nearly 50-60 soldiers and civilians, the statement added.
A number of civilian cars and commercial trucks were lined up to pass the checkpoint at the time of the foiled attack, a video footage posted by the army spokesperson showed.

Jordan releases security footage of shooting of 3 US troops
Jordan’s military released security camera footage Monday of a shooting in which a Jordanian soldier killed three U.S. military trainers at an air base in the kingdom.
The video had previously been shown to the families of the U.S. Army Green Berets by U.S. law enforcement but had not been made public until Monday.
The soldiers were killed Nov. 4 when their convoy came under fire at the entrance to the al-Jafr base in southern Jordan.
A Jordanian military court sentenced the soldier, 1st Sgt. Marik al-Tuwayha, to life in prison with hard labor last week.
The defendant had said he opened fire because he feared the base was coming under attack and that he had acted in line with open-fire regulations.
Jordan’s military said in a statement Monday that the soldier “had acted against orders and military instructions and had not acted in self-defense.”
The statement was posted by Hala Akhbar, a news site linked to the military that also released the security camera footage.
Jordan initially said the Americans triggered the shooting by disobeying entry rules, a claim that was later withdrawn.
The victims of the shooting were Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Lewellen, 27, of Kirksville, Missouri; Staff Sgt. Kevin J. McEnroe, 30, of Tucson, Arizona; and Staff Sgt. James F. Moriarty, 27, of Kerrville, Texas.
The 6-minute-long video was in line with descriptions previously given by the relatives of the American soldiers who had watched the footage.
It shows the U.S. convoy coming under fire at the entrance to the base. The footage has no sound, but puffs of white-gray smoke indicate gunfire.
At one point, two figures, U.S. forces, are seen getting out of their vehicles to take cover. They raise their hands and wave from behind a barrier, but the shooting continues. Another figure, according to past descriptions the Jordanian, chases them and keeps shooting.
According to the descriptions of the relatives, Lewellen and McEnroe, who were in the first vehicle waiting at the gate, were the first to be hit by gunfire.
Moriarty and another soldier jumped out of the next two cars to take cover and returned fire with their pistols. They yelled that they were friendly forces, the relatives said.
The defendant kept shooting, they said. He was seriously wounded in the exchange.

America’s cold civil war has been heating up. It was only a matter of time until it started turning violent. In a country where major corporations sponsor the theatrical murder of the President because they so dislike his policies, where millions are led to cheer a mockup of his bloody severed head, where authoritative figures excoriate Republicans as criminals against the environment, accuse their policies of being genocidal, and them as racists, etc. one need not wonder that a hyper-partisan shot up the targets of officious opprobrium while they were playing baseball.
This has been a long time coming. Immediately, it will call forth more of the fortress mentality and behavior that has been tightening its grip on America for more than a generation. In the longer term, unless we start eliminating the real, lively, reasons why Americans increasingly regard each other as enemies, this civil war will turn much, much hotter.
It was not always so. While America was fighting Germany and Japan — no strangers to dirty tricks — the Houses of Congress were open to all. Politicians and officials walked the streets unafraid. Within living memory, Harry Truman took walks on Pennsylvania Avenue. Throughout the Cold War against the Soviet Union that did its monumental best to subvert us, all assumed, correctly, that ordinary Americans’ natural law abiding-ness and vigilance would ensure elementary safety. Alexis de Tocqueville had described the world’s safest country because, in America, “the criminal is every man’s enemy” — because, in that America, there was no distinction between the people and the government.

Tapper did not explain how he concluded that “every intelligence expert, both under the Obama administration and under the Trump administration” made such an assessment.
Tapper also misleadingly asserted that the alleged Russia interference was affirmed in a “unanimous consensus of the intelligence community.”
The U.S. intelligence community consists of 17 agencies, but only three assessed charges that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Former CIA Director John Brennan previously testified about the highly compartmentalized nature of that assessment within those three agencies – the FBI, CIA and National Security Agency.
