China, U.S. agree on aim of ‘complete, irreversible’ Korean denuclearization
BEIJING (Reuters) – China and the United States agreed that efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula should be “complete, verifiable and irreversible”, Chinese state media said on Saturday, reporting the results of high level talks in Washington this week.
“Both sides reaffirm that they will strive for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” a consensus document released by the official Xinhua news agency said.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said on Thursday that the United States pressed China to ramp up economic and political pressure on North Korea, during his meeting with top Chinese diplomats and defense chiefs.
China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui met Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis during the talks. Yang later met with U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House, where they also discussed North Korea, Xinhua reported.

Some 330 Marines will be stationed in Norway until the end of 2018, the government said on Wednesday, doubling the length of what was initially billed as a one-year trial period.
The deployment last January to practice winter warfare and cross-country skiing, and to participate in joint exercises, marked the first foreign troops to be stationed in the NATO member country since the end of World War Two.
“We consider that this step contradicts Norwegian policy of not deploying foreign military bases in the country in times of peace,” the Russian embassy wrote in an statement to Reuters.

“A pregnant 15-year-old who had been raped by a brother-in-law decided to marry her attacker, hoping this would shield her from other male relatives who might kill her in the name of “family honor.”
A young woman was taken into protective custody after being stabbed 17 times by a brother who accused her of bringing “shame” to the family for running away from an abusive husband.
Jail, forced marriage or the risk of getting killed by family members — these are some of the harsh choices still faced by victims of abuse or sexual violence in Jordan.
In a key step toward reform, the kingdom is now poised to abolish a provision that exempts a rapist from punishment if he marries his victim. Jordan’s parliament is expected to do so in a special session sometime after the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan next week.
Women’s rights advocates say repealing Article 308 would be a victory, but that more work lies ahead in a society with deeply rooted customs of patriarchy and a legal system that often goes easy on the male perpetrators.
“It’s about the patriarchal mentality in a society that never punishes the man or shames him for anything,” said Asma Khader, a lawyer and activist.
The “marry the rapist” provision has been repealed in Egypt and Morocco, but remains on the books in Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Algeria and the Palestinian territories, according to the international group Human Rights Watch.
Judge Jehad al-Duradi, who handles sexual violence cases at Jordan’s main criminal court, said women who agree to marry their attackers often act out of desperation.
The judge cited the case of the 15-year-old who was raped by her sister’s husband. At the pregnant teen’s request, the judge approved a marriage between the rapist and his victim.
The rapist escaped punishment and expelled his new wife from his home on the day of the wedding, leaving her to fend for herself and her child, the judge said.
Several other Jordanian laws allow lenient treatment of those who kill or assault women.
One provision lightens punishment if a man kills his wife or another female relative for allegedly having sex outside marriage. Another article says a convicted killer could receive as little as a year in prison if he acts in a “state of great fury resulting from an unlawful and dangerous act” by the victim.
If the victim’s family drops a complaint, even that one-year minimum can be cut in half. Some perpetrators in Jordan have been jailed for as little as six months for killing a daughter or sister.
Al-Duradi said Jordanian courts have imposed harsher punishment for such crimes in recent years; no convicted killer has received a sentence of less than 10 years in prison since 2010.
“The text of the law hasn’t changed, but the interpretation has,” the judge said.
Jordan’s main criminal court heard 182 rape cases in 2015 and 168 in 2016. It also dealt with 39 slayings of women in 2015, including nine labeled “honor crimes.” In 2016, there were 36 killings, including eight honor cases.
The actual numbers are believed to be higher, with many assaults going unreported, said Samar Muhareb, director of a legal aid group. Communities prefer to handle such crimes in tribal arbitration to avoid public shame.
“Whenever we see informal justice, it’s at the expense of women,” Muhareb said.
Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities often detain at-risk women.
A decision on protective custody can be made by a provincial governor, without court approval. Detention typically continues until the woman’s family promises not to harm her, or until she finds a man to marry her.
Fidaa, 25, has repeatedly ended up in prison, following a chain of events that began with her divorcing an abusive husband when she was just 15 years old.
Angered by the divorce, one of her brothers stabbed and seriously wounded her.
The brother was sentenced to five years in prison, but the then-teen also ended up behind bars. Desperate to get out of protective custody, she married a 27-year-old man, only to be forced into prostitution.
Her new husband threatened to alert her brother to her whereabouts if she refused to work as a prostitute, Fidaa said in an interview at the Juweida women’s prison on the outskirts of the Jordanian capital, Amman.
Fidaa, a petite woman with dark hair and a quiet demeanor, complied for three years. She eventually managed to leave her husband with help from the police’s family protection unit.
Ten years after her first detention, Fidaa is back in prison.
She was arrested in January, during a police raid of a brothel where she said she had found refuge after befriending some of the women there. Fidaa has been cleared of prostitution charges, but is again unable to leave detention without a sponsor.
“If my brothers know about what happened, they will slaughter me,” said Fidaa, who only gave her first name for fear of repercussions.
Sadeq al-Omari, a senior official in the prison system, said protective custody is often the only solution, adding that “the right to life is more important than the right to freedom.”
Plans to set up shelters with police protection have not materialized so far, he said.
In the meantime, authorities imprison the female victim rather than potential perpetrators because there are too many male relatives who might hurt her, he said. “Should I put 20 people in prison for one person’s protection?” al-Omari said.
Legislator Wafa Bani Mustafa said change begins with legal reform.
“If we can change the law so that it’s no longer a solution to get rid of the girl this way, we can encourage families to treat their daughters as victims, not as a source of shame,” he said. “If we cancel the legal umbrella, society will follow.””

“Parliament has been hit by a “sustained and determined” cyber security attack aimed at gaining access to MPs and staffers email accounts.
Liberal Democrat peer Baron Rennard warned the situation meant parliamentary emails may not be accessed outside Westminster.
He tweeted: “Cyber security attack on Westminster, Parliamentary e.mails may not work remotely [sic].”
The attack follows reports that passwords for MPs and officials were being sold online by hackers.
An email sent to MPs by Parliament’s digital services team said: “Earlier this morning we discovered unusual activity and evidence of an attempted cyber-attack on our computer network.
“Closer investigation by our team confirmed that hackers were carrying out a sustained and determined attack on all parliamentary user accounts in an attempt to identify weak passwords. These attempts specifically were trying to gain access to our emails.
“We have been working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre to identify the method of the attack and have made changes to prevent the attackers gaining access, however our investigation continues.”
A Parliamentary spokeswoman said remote email access had been disabled as part of security measures, and was not part of the security hack.
She said: “The Houses of Parliament have discovered unauthorised attempts to access parliamentary user accounts.
“We are continuing to investigate this incident and take further measures to secure the computer network, liaising with the National Cyber Security Centre.
“We have systems in place to protect member and staff accounts and are taking the necessary steps to protect our systems.”

Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) introduced The Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act of 2017 (H.R. 2826), which would drastically reform the United States’ refugee program. The bill aims to implement additional security measures and give more authority to Congress and states to determine refugee policy.
“To be clear, we support America’s refugee program. But it needs to be modernized to keep pace with the security challenges of today’s world,” the two representatives wrote in a Washington Times op-ed.
Most notably, the legislation would shift power to determine how many refugees are allowed into the United States from the President to Congress. The act would reduce the refugee ceiling to 50,000 annually, the number proposed by President Trump. President Obama’s target for refugee resettlement in the United States was 110,000, the highest number since 1995.
The bill would also prevent resettlement of refugees in any state or locality which takes legislative or executive action against resettlement.

London, June 5, 2017. A minute of silence is held at Potters Field Park, next to the City Hall, to pay tribute to the victims of the London Bridge jihadist attack three days before. Those who came have brought flowers, candles and signs bearing the usual words: “unity”, “peace” and “love”. Faces are sad but no trace of anger is visible. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, a Muslim, gives a speech emphasizing against all evidence that the killers’ ideas have nothing to do with Islam.
A few hours after the attack, Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May also refuses to incriminate Islam, but dares to speak of “Islamic extremism”. She was immediately accused of “dividing” the country. On election day, June 8, her Conservative party lost the majority in the House of Commons. Jeremy Corbyn, a pro-terrorist, “democratic socialist”, who demands the end of British participation in the campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS), led the Labour party to thirty more seats than it had earlier. In spite of three attacks in three months, Britain does not seem to choose the path of vigilance and determination. June is not even over but the media barely talk about terrorism any more. A devastating fire destroyed a building in North Kensington, killing scores of residents. Mourning the victims seems to have completely erased all memory of those killed in the terrorist attacks.
Then, in the early hours of June 19, a man who acted alone drove a van into a crowd of Muslims leaving Finsbury Park Mosque in London: the main “threat” to the British right now was soon presented in several newspapers as “Islamophobia”.

Dozens of protesters gathered in Munich on Saturday to demonstrate against Germany’s deportation policies, amid reports that the country will restart deporting Afghan asylum seekers next week.
Protesters carried signs reading “No to deportation”, with one speaker, Afghan refugee Mirways, stating that “all over Afghanistan there is war.”

Women disguised in burkas force way into flat and attack occupants with knives and hammer

Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of attempted murder following the violent attack which took place on Tuesday evening
Two women, described as wearing burkas, managed to get inside the flat on Eldon Street, in Oldham .
They attacked a 20-year-old woman, who was left with cuts to her arms and a deep knife wound to her torso.
A 19-year-old woman suffered from knife wounds to her left arm and armpit.
Both women were taken to hospital following the attack but are not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries and are said to be in a stable condition.
Greater Manchester Police have recovered two knives and a hammer from the property.
Officer investigating the attack are keen to speak to the two women involved in the attack and are following a number of enquiries.
The woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remains in police custody for questioning.
Police have also arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Det Insp Kenny Blain of GMP’s Oldham Borough, said: “Fortunately, these two women are recovering well in hospital but with the level of violence displayed in the attack, it could have been a completely different story.
We have one woman in custody and will continue to question her throughout the day in connection with the attack but still need people to come forward with any information they have.
“It still would have been light at this time and the attack, although it was not prolonged, lasted long enough for someone to have noticed something.
“Our investigation is still very much in its infancy however, we believe this is an isolated incident and believe there is no wider to risk to the community at this time.”

CALGARY- ‘I’m a victim,’ insists man guilty of child pornography, sexual assault
Despite describing himself as a victim, a man guilty of child pornography and sexually assaulting minors was handed a 12-year sentence Friday.
Part of that term includes a conviction for obstructing justice when Tanzirul Alam, through hundreds of phone calls while in the Calgary Remand Centre, convinced one of his victims to lie in court for him.
Alam abused his three underage female victims and the justice system itself, said Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sandy Park.
“He showed disdain for the judicial system, it is a very serious offence,” said Park, who also noted Alam’s sexual crimes spanned 3 1/2 years.
“The girls were in fact child victims … children must be protected from themselves because of their lack of maturity and foresight and adults must not be allowed to exploit those vulnerabilities.”
The man was convicted of 17 offences involving the girls, ages 14 and 15, including sexual assault, sexual contact with a person under 16, luring, making and transmitting child pornography and obstruction.
His victims were lured on the Internet, which soon led to sexual acts that were recorded on video, some of the images being shared on the Internet.
“The potential for a lifelong impact on the complainants is acknowledged by this court,” said Park.
He also noted Alam continued his sex crimes while on release from the remand centre in 2014.
In a nearly 20-minute statement to the court, Alam, 29, insisted his difficult upbringing in Bangladesh, which included being tortured by Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, contributed to his offences in Canada.
He said the Canadian government does a poor job in educating newcomers like him to the country’s legal realities and predicted more refugees would be committing similar offences.
“I believe, in a way, I’m a victim of a system that is not perfect,” said Alam, who apologized to his victims, one of whom looked on.
“My intention was never to hurt you … I’m not heartless.”
Park said Alam “lies to serve his own purposes but has some remorse as shown in his statement.”
Because of his obstructive conduct while in remand, Park reduced most of Alam’s credit for time served from the usual 1.5 days to 1.25 days for each day spent in lockup.
That means he’ll serve eight years and eight months before parole eligibility.
It’s an “awesome, meaningful sentence,” said Crown prosecutor Donna Spaner, adding it employs tough sentencing guidelines established by the previous federal Tory government.
“It’s a recognition of Parliament’s intent to criminalize predatory matters of Internet exploitation of children,” she said. “That’s a manslaughter sentence.”
Spaner also derided Alam’s statement as “self-serving” nonsense and said his warnings about refugees were false and potentially damaging.
The mother of one of the victims said she was happy with the sentence and hopes the prison time will help Alam and the community.
“He will not be free for a very long time, and with any luck, he will get some mental help and rehabilitation while in prison, so that upon his release he will never do these seriously damaging, disgusting crimes to anyone ever again,” said the woman, who can’t be named to protect the identities of the victims.
