Not many at this site will clearly recall the introduction of Apple’s “Macintosh” desktop computer on January 24th, 1984. This relatively boxy, but nonetheless compact desktop computer permanently disrupted all further, affordable, personal computing, FOREVER!
Fewer still may appreciate Apple’s gradual (and tragic) transition away from the MacIntosh’s superbly intuitive system architecture over to the current “different because we can patent it” framework that Apple currently embraces.
If you are able to stop from vomiting while reading Walter Issacson’s shameless gushing about Bill Gates, then there is much to be gained from his account of Apple from his book, “The Innovators – How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution”.
As someone who has spent much of his life in Silicon Valley working with solid state giants like Intel, please read the book for many unexpected insights.
Don’t get me started on the bad business decisions made by Steve Jobs.
Apple was my first and remains my only.
Being able to create off the UNIX base with simple developer’s tools was what it was all about. No problem working with barebones, open-source geeks (all my friends), we were sharing quirky workarounds every day. An “app”? Absurd. We just messed around, found how to do what we needed done.
Apple, Inc. was pretty special too.
I upgraded my system shortly after my first [failed] hand surgery. The new trackpad required subtle changes that shot pain through the damaged nerves. Everything was on that laptop, from medication schedules to phone numbers to _my diary_.
This was an emergency. I couldn’t hold a pencil or turn a page without a clumsy device in my mouth. By that time I knew that no occupational therapist could bring my life back to me again.
I called Apple tech support. They kept passing me up the chain of competency. I’ll never know who it was, but sometime in the wee hours I got all the way up to Cupertino senior executive management.
They worked with me for three solid hours. We made just the right adjustments together. Problem solved.
Think different.
Jobs messed up in not letting 3rd parties write software for his system, by the time he was out and someone else strted working with th customers and 3rd parties most computing was/is a microsoft world. My first computer was an XT clone so I could take work home and then carry the finished product back on a disk. After I was no longer working in accounting I stayed with mocrosoft because I knew the systems. The work I did with a Mac was great but the lack of software limited the usefulness in an accounting division.
It was almost all third-party developers in the old days. Apple provided free Developer’s Tools, encouraged open-source. There was a bit of a problem with incompetent dummies making their own systems unstable, constantly complaining to Apple.
Most surgeons used Apple for the high-res display. Everybody started watching procedures performed, learning techniques at a gallop. I believe the practice of surgery advanced at an exponential rate over those few years.
Not in the 80s, Jobs wouldn’t let anyone write programs for his system, he knew how he wanted the microcomputer use to go and wasn’t going to let his machines be used in anyway he didn’t want. It was after he was removed from Apple that they let the third parties write programs. The new management let anyone write programs but by then the big businesses were using Microsoft and didn’t want to change. I will admit that back when I was paying attention Apple had the better machines but their business software didn’t fill the needs of the medium sized and larger offices. Apple had such a small customer base Bill Gates had to
giveinvest in Apple to keep from having a monopoly.Yeah, I came along later. The elegant little OS-X laptop, with OS-9 and full UNIX complement. CD/DVD burner included, the works.
My father had done his homework to perfection, as always. It was his vicarious digital adventure.

Susan Rice’s Twitter account is one of many windows on her partisanship. Even in the midst of an investigation into her political espionage, she can’t resist a few feverish re-tweets. The most remarkable one came on Thursday. It was a re-tweet of a reckless column by E.J. Dionne that seeks to revive, sans evidence, the fable of Trump-Russia collusion in last year’s election.
It is clear from this re-tweet that Rice remains proud of the Obama administration’s spying on Trump and his aides. Notice that the dispute has shifted from whether spying occurred to why it occurred. Both sides say it happened. The difference is that the Dems applaud the spying and the Republicans condemn it.
Recall the evasive denial of Obama after Trump’s initial tweet. Obama never denied the surveillance. He just denied ordering it. Shortly thereafter, one of his speechwriters, Jon Favreau, punctuated this distinction: “I’d be careful about reporting that Obama said there was no wiretapping. Statement just said that neither he nor the WH ordered it.”
Of course, that too was a falsehood, predicated on, at best, an exceedingly narrow definition of the “White House.” In fact, the White House in any honest sense of the term — from John Brennan to Loretta Lynch to Susan Rice — did order it. These White House officials acted in Obama’s name and with his knowledge. Or are we supposed to believe that he was wholly unaware of a months-long investigation (which ran on multiple tracks, from the FBI investigation to a multi-agency investigation launched by Brennan) into the opposing party’s presidential nominee?

“Christianity is literally dying in Europe,” said Conrad Hackett, the head of the researchers who worked on the Pew report.
According to it, between 2010 and 2015, the Muslim population increased by more than 150 million people to 1.8 billion.

Shortly after the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the only way to get into immediate postwar Baghdad was to get a ride in Amman, Jordan, and take it across the desert to Iraq.
A bulletin board in Jordan’s Amman Intercontinental Hotel would list who was going to Baghdad and we all hitched rides with whomever we could get.
So, on a crazy trip, the well-known “Baghdad Dash,” three of us crammed into a tiny, not so cool-looking car and made our way across the desert.
Halfway, the engine stopped. In typical Mohammedan fashion, the driver said “Insha’ Allah” (“God’s will”), got out of the car and walked off.

The Bangladesh government at present is carrying out atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities. Some foreign organisations helped me to flee to safety in Germany after nine of my colleagues were hacked to death by extremists.

Trump’s First 100 Days Left U.S. Allies ‘Off-Balance,’ Susan Rice Says
President Donald Trump’s foreign policy has shaken long-time U.S. allies and left them off-balance, according to his predecessor’s top national security aide.
The U.S. “is supposed to be the grown-up at the dinner table,” former National Security Advisor Susan Rice said in an interview set to air Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” “We’re not supposed to be the crazy aunt in the attic that nobody knows what is going to do next.”
Rice chided Trump for, among other things, calling on South Korea — a key U.S. ally — to pay for a missile defense system the U.S. is setting up in the country.
“The deal was they provide the land and the installation, and we would provide the system in its operation,” she said. Trump also said this week he wants to renegotiate or cancel a trade agreement with Seoul.
North Korea on Saturday test-fired a ballistic missile for the sixth time this year, drawing a scolding from Trump on Twitter. U.S. allies in Asia from Seoul to Tokyo have grown increasingly concerned about tensions with Pyongyang and the nuclear weapons ambitions of Leader Kim Jong Un. They want steadiness from the U.S., Rice said.
“I’m concerned, frankly, that we’re hearing very mixed messages,” Rice said. “We need to reassure and secure our allies, particularly South Korea and Japan, who feel most directly threatened by North Korea.”
War of Words
Rice’s blunt assessment of Trump’s international agenda is latest in a war of words between the Obama White House’s top foreign policy adviser and the current administration.
Trump this month, without citing evidence, said Rice may have committed a crime by trying to learn the identities of Americans associated with the president caught up in intercepted communications related to Russia. She has denied any wrongdoing.
Trump will hold a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Saturday night to mark his first 100 days in office, a milestone observers often use to assess an administration’s early achievements.
After campaigning against the type of overseas interventions that have characterized American foreign policy for decades, the president has become increasingly embroiled in global affairs. That includes a U.S. missile strike against Syria, bombing Islamic State positions in Afghanistan, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Meanwhile, Trump has shifted positions on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, China’s currency policy, and a free-trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.
“It’s early days, but I would say that in many respects it’s been unsteady and rocky,” Rice said of Trump’s foreign policy. “A number of our closest friends and allies are feeling uncertain, off-balance, unclear as to where we stand and what we mean. ”

Saudi Arabia wants German companies Siemens and SAP to play an important role in furthering the kingdom’s “digital transformation”, company officials said on Sunday during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to the country.
Top executives at the engineering conglomerate and the business software company who were travelling with Merkel signed declarations of intent to work with the Saudi authorities, the officials said.
Saudi Arabia is pushing a long-term economic transformation dubbed “Vision 2030” to reduce the country’s reliance on oil, attract investment and improve the lives of its citizens.
Siemens signed a framework agreement with the Saudi National Industrial Clusters Development Program (NICDP) which the German group said could lead to equipping infrastructure projects worth at least a billion euros.
The company also wants to provide vocational training in Saudi Arabia, while SAP has agreed with the Saudi Ministry of Planning to cooperate on the country’s digitisation efforts, officials said.
The German business delegation travelling with Merkel on her Gulf visit also includes the chief executives of Lufthansa, national railway operator Deutsche Bahn [DBN.UL] and industrial services group Bilfinger.

Syria: 400 anti-govt fighters leave Homs as evacuation continues
Some 400 anti-government fighters and their families were seen boarding buses in Homs’ al-Waer neighbourhood bound for Idlib, Sunday, as part of a transfer deal, brokered and secured by Russia, aimed at reducing fighting in the area.
The last group of militants and their families is expected to leave the area in the middle of May.
