  1. A well-trained dog is the most economical and first line of defense against those who would harm you. Any widespread killing of dogs is a direct indicator of someone or some group seeking to disarm you.

I would even venture to assert that Islam’s preference for cats over dogs exemplifies a canonical de-emphasis upon loyalty (which dogs are famous for) versus the notorious feline propensity for finicky behavior.

CAVEAT: My feral cat and dog were best friends for life and went to the mat for each other. So, please do not take this as a blanket condemnation of cats. Both of them (now long past) provided a level of companionship and loving affection for each other (and to me) that blurs my monitor even as I type these words. Their absence has left a hole in my life, soul, psyche, and heart which has not healed to this very day.

All the same, Muslims dislike or are afraid of dogs for a number of very succinct reasons. I imagine that the loyalty and ferocity of their unalloyed devotion is chief among them. I can only think that Mohammad feeling an uncomfortable degree of competition for affections in households that hosted well-raised and properly treated dogs.

    • Zoroastrians and Christians had pet dogs when Mohamed showed up. They had affection for their pets. Ordering the killing of their dogs was an easy way for Mohamed to break down their spirit.

  2. When I was a kid we had a Kommondor naned Ali by my father. Giving your dog a Muslim name he said was not uncommon because of the Ottoman occupation.

  3. When I was a kid a black neighbor poisoned my dog, after the dog recovered he tried to attack every black that came near to him or any member of the family. I wonder how many of the dogs will react the same way after they recover?
