  1. CBC – Long lines in Montreal as French expats head to the polls

The pivotal, and unpredictable, presidential election in France is drawing thousands of eligible voters to polling stations in Quebec.

Voters in France head to the polls on Sunday. But for citizens outside the country, Saturday was their last chance to cast a ballot for the country’s next president.

In Montreal, French citizens lined up for hours outside a private school in Outremont. Of the 85,000 eligible French voters in Canada, the vast majority of them were registered to vote here.

Many of those in line expressed fears that Marine Le Pen, leader of the anti-immigrant Front National, could win the election.

“I’m a bit worried right now about what’s going on in France,” said Manon Harsigny, who waited two hours to cast her vote.

“I know the far right is gaining more and more power and I really, really need to express my opinion and I don’t want to feel guilty after the election.”

    Tight race

Le Pen is among 11 candidates in the running for the presidency. The winner is required to capture more than 50 per cent of the vote, meaning a run-off election with the two highest vote-getters will likely be held next month.

Recent polls suggest Le Pen could make the run-off, along with Emmanuel Macron, who has campaigned on a centrist platform.

But not far behind the front-runners are the establishment conservative François Fillion and the leftist outsider Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Fillion, who represents the Republican Party, looked poised at one point to make the second round, but his campaign was hampered by allegations he used public money to pay his wife and children for work they never did.

Since the scandal broke, though, he has managed to claw his way back into contention.

As for Mélenchon, his campaign was off the radar until a spirited debate performance saw him climb to within a stone’s throw of the leaders. His leftist brand of populism has some calling him the French Bernie Sanders.

“For me the worst is any kind of extreme,” said Lisa Di Jorio, as she waited in a line that stretched at least eight blocks.

“That can be Marine Le Pen but it can also be the extreme opposite of that. The extreme left is not any better.”

Around 10,000 voters were also registered at a polling station in Quebec City, which was expected to draw French citizens from as far as Trois-Rivières and Saguenay.

The polls in Quebec close at 8 p.m. tonight.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudi-king-names-son-us-envoy-ties-boosted-46965813

“Saudi Arabia’s King Salman issued a decree late Saturday naming one of his sons, an air force pilot who has taken part in coalition strikes against the Islamic State group, as the kingdom’s new ambassador to the U.S.

The appointment of Prince Khaled bin Salman to Washington signals the kingdom’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties under President Donald Trump. As the king’s son, the prince has a direct line to the Saudi monarch.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s third largest defense spender. Prince Khaled’s appointment positions him as an influential broker in deals with U.S. manufacturers.

Saudi-U.S. relations had cooled under the Obama administration after Washington pursued a nuclear accord with Shiite-ruled Iran that the Sunni-ruled kingdom strongly opposed. Saudi Arabia and Iran are regional rivals, and back opposing sides in the wars in Syria and Yemen.

Relations with the Riyadh have improved since Trump took office. King Salman dispatched his most powerful son, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also defense minister, to meet Trump at the White House last month. Saudi Arabia was quick to praise Trump’s missile strike on a Syrian military base in response to an apparent chemical weapons attack on civilians.

Prince Khaled is a former F-15 pilot who graduated military-aviation training from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi in 2009 and took part in anti-IS strikes in 2014 as part of the U.S.-led coalition. He also participated in flight missions over Yemen, where the kingdom has been bombing a Yemeni faction aligned with Iran for more than two years.

The Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news website says the prince studied briefly at Harvard University and Georgetown University. The news website says he trained at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, but that a back injury forced him to stop flying.

He has been an adviser at the Saudi Embassy in Washington since late last year…”

“A Somali police official says a roadside bomb in a remote town in Somalia’s semiautonomous state of Puntland has killed eight soldiers and injured three others.

Ahmed Mohamed tells The Associated Press that Sunday’s blast targeted a military convoy in Galgala. Security forces have been battling Islamic State-linked fighters in the region.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility for the blast. IS-linked extremists also have carried out such attacks in the past.

Fighters affiliated with the Islamic State are a relatively new and growing threat in Somalia, where al-Shabab has been entrenched for years.”

  8. Death toll jumps to 20 in Venezuela protests

Caracas (AFP) – The death toll in three weeks of violence at anti-government protests in Venezuela jumped to 20 people after a night of clashes and pillaging left 12 people dead in Caracas.

Riot police and pro-government vigilantes fought running battles with protesters demanding the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro on the capital’s east, west and south sides, witnesses said.

“It was like a war,” said 33-year-old construction worker Carlos Yanez, a resident of the southwestern district of El Valle.

“The police were firing tear gas, armed civilians were shooting guns at buildings. My family and I threw ourselves to the floor. It was horrible,” he told AFP.

Eleven people were killed in the neighborhood, according to officials.

Eight of them were reportedly electrocuted while trying to loot a bakery amid the chaos. The rest were shot.

At nightfall on Friday, more protests and pockets of unrest were reported in eastern Caracas, and in Macuto in the neighboring state of Vargas. There was a heavy security presence in the city.

    • Armed Civilian Bands in Venezuela Prop Up Unpopular President

CARACAS, Venezuela — The bikers thundered up in a phalanx of red jackets and dark clothes, some with faces covered, revving motorcycles before a thousand protesters in Caracas. They threw tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd. Then, witnesses say, they pulled pistols and fired.

Someone fell. Carlos Moreno, 17, lay sprawled on the ground, a pool of blood around his head.

“His brain matter was coming out,” recalled Carlos Julio Rojas, a community leader who witnessed the fatal shooting in Venezuela’s capital on Wednesday.

The uniformed men who shot Mr. Moreno were not government security forces, witnesses say. Rather, they were members of armed bands who have become key enforcers for President Nicolás Maduro as he attempts to crush a growing protest movement against his rule.

The groups, called collectives or colectivos in Spanish, originated as pro-government community organizations that have long been a part of the landscape of leftist Venezuelan politics. Civilians with police training, colectivo members are armed by the government, say experts who have studied them.

  9. “Total Chaos” – Cyber Attack Feared As Multiple Cities Hit With Simultaneous Power Grid Failures

The U.S. power grid appears to have been hit with multiple power outages affecting San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles.

Officials report that business, traffic and day-to-day life has come to a standstill in San Francisco, reportedly the worst hit of the three major cities currently experiencing outages.

A series of subsequent power outages in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City left commuters stranded and traffic backed up on Friday morning. Although the outages occurred around the same time, there is as of yet no evidence that they were connected by anything more than coincidence.

The first outage occurred at around 7:20 a.m. in New York, when the power went down at the 7th Avenue and 53rd Street subway station, which sent a shockwave of significant delays out from the hub and into the rest of the subway system. By 11:30 a.m. the city’s MTA confirmed that generators were running again in the station, although the New York subways were set to run delayed into the afternoon.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-04-21/total-chaos-cyber-attack-feared-multiple-cities-hit-simultaneous-power-grid-failures

    • It could be coincidence but it could be a cyber attack, if it is an attack the question is who did it? ISIS, NORK, China, Russia, antifa or someone we haven’t heard of before?

      • Call me cynical but “coincidence” ceased to have much meaning some time ago.

When you combine that with how almost no one in government or media has any use for the truth, things get pretty dismal. As in, I sincerely doubt that the American people would be informed whether this was a genuine cyber-attack, if only because of the public panic that might ensue.

Try this set of “coincidences”: Did Nichols and Yousef meet?

        • Yeah I know about that one and about a bunch of the other coincidences in that terror attack. There are a lot of unanswered questions on it that we will probably never get answered.

  10. Volleyball Over, North Koreans Go Back to Work at Nuclear Site, Analysts Say

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea appears to have resumed work at its nuclear test site after a perplexing series of volleyball matches were held there, according to analysts who studied satellite images of the site, renewing concerns that a major weapons test could be imminent.

Many observers had feared that North Korea would test a nuclear device at the site around April 15, the birthday of Kim Il-sung, the North’s founding president and the grandfather of the current leader, Kim Jong-un. But Mr. Kim’s government celebrated the day instead with a military parade in Pyongyang, the capital, during which a fleet of missiles were rolled out, including what analysts believed were never-before-seen long-range ballistic missiles.

North Korea carried out a missile test on Sunday, but it was considered an embarrassing failure, with the projectile exploding immediately after liftoff.

But North Korea is preparing to celebrate another major holiday this coming week: Tuesday will be the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army, and the North often uses such occasions to show off its military advances.

  11. Surgeon general who called ‘gun control part of medicine’ gone from Trump administration
    By J.E. Dyer April 22, 2017

Long-time readers of Liberty Unyielding remember when Howard Portnoy brought us the story of Dr. Vivek Murthy, the Harvard-trained physician whom Obama nominated to be his surgeon general in 2014.

Dr. Murthy had a lengthy and impressive resume. But no part of it was as distinctive and controversial as his posture that “gun control” is a public health issue, and is “part of medicine.” Since Murthy’s nomination erupted at a time when Americans were first learning that the Obamacare legislation was intended to have their doctors grill them on whether they had guns at home, the whole thing seemed like a bad idea gone worse. (The following year, some of the public schools got into the act, like this one in Texas which asked students in a questionnaire about what guns were in their homes.)

Murthy didn’t necessarily bolster the, shall we say, gravitas of his cause by disclosing in 1994 that his philosophy about guns and medicine was developed from watching Saturday morning cartoons as a child.

But he was eventually confirmed by the Senate in December 2014, after a tough fight put up by the NRA.

Now he’s out. The New York Times reports that he was fired:

  12. The Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch condemned the U.N.’s election of Saudi Arabia, “the world’s most misogynistic regime,” to a 2018-2022 term on its Commission on the Status of Women, the U.N. agency “exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.”

“Electing Saudi Arabia to protect women’s rights is like making an arsonist into the town fire chief,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch. “It’s absurd.”

“Every Saudi woman,” said Neuer, “must have a male guardian who makes all critical decisions on her behalf, controlling a woman’s life from her birth until death. Saudi Arabia also bans women from driving cars.”

“I wish I could find the words to express how I feel right know. I’m ‘saudi’ and this feels like betrayal,” tweeted a self-described Saudi woman pursuing a doctorate in international human rights law in Australia.

  14. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/04/bomb-attack-damages-monsanto-research-center-italy

Earlier this week, in the middle of Easter night in Olmeneta, Italy, an unknown person attacked the Monsanto Research Center with several “bottle bombs” or Molotov cocktails, small improvised explosive devices. The 16 April assault, apparently a protest against research on genetically modified organisms (GMO), did not injure anyone but firemen worked for hours to stop a blaze set off by one bomb that devastated the cold room where most of the small facility’s experimental seeds are usually stored.

    • The central problem with GMO plants is that, once released into the environment, there’s no way to perform a “product recall”. This one reason alone is enough to put the brakes on all GMO research. I’ve written about this elsewhere and close examination of Monsanto’s track record will make your gorge rise.

As it stands, Monsanto, along with Bayer and just a handful of multinationals control over 90% of the world’s agricultural seed supply. Back in the 1990s the major pesticide manufacturers began buying up all of the seed companies. This pattern has only continued with Bayer’s recent purchase of Monsanto.

If that isn’t enough to make you blink, then nothing probably can. This is where some aspects of the environmental movement, like seed libraries, heirloom farming, and seed exchanges are of crucial importance and deserve strong support.

The residents of 20 homes in area had to be evacuated for several hours while the bomb squad was called in.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-philippines-militants-idUKKBN17P03V

“A Filipino soldier kidnapped last week in the southern Philippines by Abu Sayyaf militants was found beheaded, the military said on Sunday, hours after government troops killed three more members of the Islamic State-linked group in a clash elsewhere.

The head of Sergeant Anni Siraji of the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion was found 50 metres away from his body in Patikul town in Sulu, Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, said.

Sobejana said Siraji was probably abducted and executed because of his involvement in peace initiatives in Sulu.

“He is involved in peace efforts. He is not actually a combatant. We are using him to engage stakeholders because he is a Tausog (like most Abu Sayyaf militants),” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, the military said government troops had killed three more Abu Sayyaf militants on the resort island of Bohol where they were hiding after a failed attempt to kidnap tourists…”

  18. Islam in the Heart of England and France

    by Denis MacEoin
    April 23, 2017 at 5:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10190/islam-england-france

The city of Birmingham in the West Midlands, the heart of England, the place where the Industrial Revolution began, the second city of the UK and the eighth-largest in Europe, today is Britain’s most dangerous city. With a large and growing Muslim population, five of its electoral wards have the highest levels of radicalization and terrorism in the country.

In February, French journalist Rachida Samouri published an article in the Parisian daily Le Figaro, in which she recounted her experiences during a visit there. In “Birmingham à l’heure islamiste” (“Birmingham in the Time of Islam”) she describes her unease with the growing dislocation between normative British values and those of the several Islamic enclaves. She mentions the Small Heath quarter, where nearly 95% of the population is Muslim, where little girls wear veils; most of the men wear beards, and women wear jilbabs and niqabs to cover their bodies and faces. Market stalls close for the hours of prayer; the shops display Islamic clothes and the bookshops are all religious. Women she interviewed condemned France as a dictatorship based on secularism (laïcité), which they said they regarded as “a pretext for attacking Muslims”. They also said that they approved of the UK because it allowed them to wear a full veil.

Another young woman, Yasmina, explained that, although she may go out to a club at night, during the day she is forced to wear a veil and an abaya [full body covering]. She then goes on to speak of the extremists:

  19. Until now it was expected that majority the most conservative part of Muslims, Salafis, did not take part in the elections. Also the jihadists do not take part in elections. However this is slowly changing.
Recently, jihadist, Suleyman al Alwan, acknowledged that Muslims can vote in the election. Also on the French popular salafi site on You Tube, sahihofislam, their imam published fatwa which say that salafis can vote in the elections.:
“… if the case is between two evils, or between a person who calls to hunt Muslims and close their mosques in this country, pretending to preserve the country and between a person who calls to give Muslims their rights, I consider who It is permissible to vote

and it may even be compulsory for them to vote in this case because it is compulsory for Muslims to repel the evil of them as long as they do not have the possibility of voting, (In a Muslim country)

and that at present they are between two evils, one of which is greater or between a promise that will give them right to certain interests and between a threat to harm the Muslims and their mosques , I consider that in this case, it is legitimate to the believers to vote to repel the evil of the Muslims in their country.”

  20. A New York Times report on Saturday claimed that FBI Director James Comey decided to reveal that he was re-opening the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton because he suspected Attorney General Loretta Lynch was covering up for her — and because an email found by Russian hackers seemed to support those suspicions.
The Times’ investigative report suggests that a U.S. intelligence agency managed to intercept some of what Russian hackers were stealing — and that one document, “described as both a memo and an email, was written by a Democratic operative who expressed confidence that Ms. Lynch would keep the Clinton investigation from going too far.”

  21. Venezuela’s Socialist Party Digs In As More Anti-Government Protests Planned

Venezuela’s ruling Socialist United Party (PSUV) has decided to go for broke. Its president, Nicolas Maduro, said over the weekend that he wanted to investigate Movistar, a regional cell service provider owned by Spain’s Telefonica. Maduro’s presidential palace has turned on its anti-aircraft reflectors, as if fearing an air attack from somewhere. For Maduro, it is probably coming from the United States. The opposition has been labeled coup plotters working in cahoots with foreign interests. PSUV has staked its claim on the narrative: they are protecting their sovereignty. Some supranatural body, supported by the local opposition, is trying desperately to overthrow it.

More protests are planned for today, with activists saying they will try to shut down main urban arteries in Caracas and in other major cities. They are asking for immediate general elections, the release of some 150 political prisoners, judiciary relaxing control over the National Assembly — the Venezuelan congress — and opening the country up to international aid organizations. Venezuelan economist Orlando Ochoa estimates that the country needs roughly $80 billion in emergency aid

  22. North Korea Arrests US Citizen, Threatens To Sink US Aircraft Carrier As Japan Deploys Warships

A third US citizen has been arrested and remains in custody in North Korea, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap. A man, a Korean-American professor in his 50s, identified by the surname Kim, had been in North Korea for a month to discuss relief activities and was detained at Pyongyang International Airport just as he was leaving North Korea, the agency reported.

The man was a former professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST), Yonhap said, citing unnamed sources. YUST, a university in neighboring China, has a sister university in Pyongyang. An official at South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said it was not aware of the reported arrest. The reason for his arrest is still unclear, and there has been no comment from the US authorities so far. South Korea’s spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, said it “was not aware” of Kim’s arrest, according to Yonhap.

North Korea, which has been criticized for its human rights record, has in the past used detained Americans to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations. North Korea already holds two Americans. Ahn Chan-il, director of the World North Korea Research Center in Seoul, said that the North “seems to be intending to use professor Kim as leverage in negotiations” amid the current bad relations between the two countries.

  24. An Italian prosecutor says he has evidence some of the charities saving migrants in the Mediterranean Sea are colluding with people-smugglers.
Carmelo Zuccaro told La Stampa (in Italian) phone calls were being made from Libya to rescue vessels.
Organisations involved in rescue operations have rejected accusations of collusion, saying their only concern is to save lives.
Italy is the main route for migrants trying to reach Europe.
Almost 1,000 people are thought to have drowned in waters between Libya and Italy this year, according to the UN refugee agency.
Nearly 37,000 people have been rescued over the same period, a surge of more than 40% from last year, the figures say.
“We have evidence that there are direct contacts between certain NGOs [non-governmental organisations] and people traffickers in Libya,” Mr Zuccaro is quoted as saying in La Stampa.

This result is historic.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, Front National presidential candidate (French): “It is clear to all French that the system tried by all means, even the most contestable, to prevent the great political debate that this election was supposed to be. This debate is finally going to happen. The French must seize this historical opportunity but the main challenge of the election is wild globalisation, which puts out civilisation in danger. The French have a very simple choice to make. Either we continue on a path to total deregulation, without borders nor protection, and leading to delocalisation, the unfair International competition, mass immigration and free circulation of terrorists. The reign of money. Or you can chose the France with borders which protect jobs, buying power, our security and national identity.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, Front National presidential candidate (French):”What I propose is the great alternation. The fundamental alternation which will put a different politics, different politicians and the renewing you want in place. It is of course not with the heir of Francois Hollande and this catastrophic five years that this expected alternation will happen. It is time to free the French people.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, Front National presidential candidate (French):”This is the principle that I will put in motion: the reassembling of the French people that everybody is waiting for can only be done with the love of France. Long live the French people, long live the Republic, long live France.”

  25. France: Paris rocked by clashes as protesters rally following presidential election

    • Eeyore, please consider placing this in its own posting. This is classic Antifa-style unsolicited violence. Also, it appears as though Luke Kuhn, a conspirator in the attempted chemical attack on the Deploraball, was present (in direct violation of his probation).

Thank you for sharing this, Xanthippa! As Richard is so fond of noting, it’s this sort of blatant thuggery that is going to start getting people killed.

Finally, kudos to the university police for immediately taking down the assailant. Be sure to turn on the sound while watching this as some of the Antifa members present instantly perjure themselves trying to claim this attack was “self defense”.

      • I am not fond of saying this but I think I have to warn as many people as I can, the far left is not going to stop their attacks, they are going to increase the number and intensity of the attacks.

        • Richard—as you’re about to find out in this thread and elsewhere at this website—your sage words of warning have not fallen upon deaf ears.

Out of sincere respect for your commitment to America’s success, I’ve done my best to ensure that everyone here (and in other places), all gain a goodly sense of appreciation for the concerned words of warning that you’ve constantly proclaimed in our favor. Aside from that …

          ‘Nuff said!

  26. ‘I don’t know how to stop’ homegrown terror attacks — the ‘most common’ threat to U.S., DHS Chief Kelly says

Fire his incompetent @ss and find out who’s next in line for the job. Rinse and repeat..

    From the article:

That strategy appears to neglect the fact that every terrorist attack in the U.S. that resulted in fatalities in the past 15 years has been carried out by American citizens or legal permanent residents working as lone wolves with no official connection to broader terror networks like ISIS.

All of which is total BS. Frequently, these individuals have visited recruitment or radicalization websites well before when they committed their attacks. Many of them attend mosques that are entirely unmonitored. As a consequence, a statement like that above is both unfounded and misleading (if not a flat-out LIE). It is the sort of unilateral surrender voiced by France’s Emmanuel Macron when he declared that, “Times have changed and we should learn to live with terrorism”.

Anyone who does not understand the need for banning Islam in all non-Islamic countries has no place in government or anti-terrorist organizations. Through such feigned helplessness, they promote public indifference and only increase a general unwillingness to take the sort of dramatic action that will be required to avoid bloodshed on a much more massive scale.

Instead, pathetic, spineless hand-wringers like DHS Chief Kelly end up enabling terrorism and merely kick the can down the road as Western nations stumble towards a civilizational conflict that could dwarf even WWII.
