This story reveals I think, the hidden strength of the V4 +1 (Austria) in the eyes of the EU. Poland and Hungary have both stated plainly that they intend to use their veto powers to defend one another if the EU tries to force migrant quotas. Conspicuous is the singling out of these two countries while not mentioning Slovakia, Czech Republic or Austria, who are kindred in trying to prevent the Hijrah. So why does the EU confine its threats only to these two countries? Could it be that the tag-team tactic of veto promise used by the Poles and the Magyars is such a thorn that the last thing the EU thugs want are three more counties deploying the same legal weapon? It is so dangerous and effective a lever that they must isolate and even evict the two worst trouble makers, lest it spread. Nationalism is a berm against everything the EU stands for and must be extinguished. Hungary sits as a berm to the Balkan corridor. And even in this modern day and age, with all of its technological sophistication, the ancient geographical strategic pressure points remain. Yes, it is easy to be distracted by all that goes on, but the Turks and their muslim proxies STILL want to march up the Balkans and conquer Europe just as they did in the low-tech days of Janos Hunyadi. The Chinese STILL want to recreate the Silk Road trade route even at massive expense. Gibraltar STILL has strategic meaning. Syria is STILL about natural gas pipelines and thwarting Putin’s NG European monopoly. And on it goes.
People laugh at Orban when he says Hungary is defending Christian Europe. They think these are the grandiose ruminations of a big man in a little, forgotten corner that has no real modern relevance. If we grant this sentiment for just a moment, imagine then what the picture would now be had Hungary given no resistance at the beginning of the human flood? Indeed what if they had welcomed it with open doors and financial assistance as the EU wants? It would be checkmate already. We would have multimillions of “migrants”, not just 1+.
Thus far the Italians have proven to be incredibly weak-kneed, just as we expect. They’ve always been a pretty gutless lot when the chips are down. See how they allow the NGO smugglers to function freely on the Mediterranean. We see some spirit coming from the common man in the street and this will spread, for sure. Once it does and the sea route is shut down they will go back to the balkan corridor en masse.
It is for this day that the EU needs the V4+1 to be effectively neutered.

The big problem with this analysis is that there is no foreseeable end to the fighting in the Mideast which means that any pipeline will be under continual attack making the price of gas much higher then using LNG ships moving the gas around Africa.
True, but the capital investment to satisfy LNG requirements for all of Europe is daunting. They spoke about LNG infrastructure options when Putin was blackmailing them a few years back just before the Syrian war. Maybe they decided that war made more dollars and sense. LNG is really expensive, even when compared to what they possibly considered to be a limited conflict.
If they are considering this a limited conflict they are wrong, pipelines through that region are very iffy unless there is a strongman who will stay bribed in power. That war has been going on for 5 years and will continue for many more before a strongman who will keep the peace takes power. Then you have the problem of, will the strongman continue to allow the gas to flow or will he start kicking up the price because he is greedy?
The arguments about the infrastructure costs are those the left used against Fracking for so long, turned out they weren’t as expensive and once built they will last a long time.
There must be a greater wisdom at play in Trump’s recent behavior, things that we are not privy to, and only his being educated on the global dynamics of energy and power make any lasting sense. This also explains why Putin appeared friendly while Trump spoke of non interference early on–it favoured Russia’s European NG monopoly version of the gas routes.
Trump is getting an education. His stubbornness must frustrate everyone near him. Any bombing that is cheered on my the likes of Nancy Pelosi and the IS must be bad, right? Well it is until Trump turns around next and bombs both of those sick bedellows. One must hope.
Victor Orban must request from Trump a meeting in the Oval office with all members of the V4 present. The President can explain the greater wisdom in person, and to pledge support against EU tyranny. This can only ve done together and in person. .
This is conflict is about more then energy and power, in fact energy is a very small portion of the equation. Don’t get hung up on the idea of energy being a large motive, it provides money for the various groups to exert power but there are other sources of money if they look hard enough. Russia mines gold and makes diamonds that they sell to de Beers, the various Islamic nations can blackmail Europe to keep their surplus population at home.
Russia wants to maintain its monopoly in supplying gas to Europe but Putin also wants to reduce US influence and power even more.
China wants resources to continue bribing its people to stay quiet and are failing.
The Kurds want their own nation and the right to try and maintain as many of their old customs as possible.
Also as I mentioned in a different comment the pipelines through Iran, Syria and Turkey are to vulnerable to attacks that would disrupt the supply increasing the cost of delivery to a higher level then the use of LNG ships. You don’t build pipelines through war zones and expect to be able to pump anything through them. Instead of concentrting on the pipelines think of the Naval base/s and the ability to project power that this gives Russia. This is the reason Iran is talking about building Naval bases in Syria and North Africa.
You may be completely right on all counts, Richard. I only remember the importance of the Saudi – American pact creating the Petrodollar following the collapse of the limited Gold Standard on Aug. 15th 1971. In exchange for the assurance of reliable energy supplies to keep the American industrial machine going the Saudis were promised security and a market for their wares. Can anyone dismiss the importance of energy as it relates to US dollar confidence? And oil sands and fracking aren’t exactly confidence boosting sources–they’re expensive and inadequate in the long term. Without cheap energy everything falls.
My sources in the oil industry say you are wrong about the inadequate charge, they say that with the new oil discoveries the American oil supply will keep the US needs filled for the next two to three centuries. All that needs to be done is for the government to allow drilling in the regions that are now off limit. Remember the oil crisis was caused by Jimmy Carter and others stopping the US from drilling in many areas and by ramming through laws making it illegal for the US to sell oil and natural gas overseas. Granted he was probably bribed by the Arabs but this created the petrodollar mess that was I will admit partially caused by Nixon unpegging the dollar from gold. This removed the last vestige (and a very small vestige it was) of the Gold Standard that FDR took us off of in the 30d.
Our current economic mess was caused by the government deciding that they could run the economy, this occurred in the 1970s (yes Nixon was a liberal Keynesian) and the free market types have been fighting a rear guard action since then to slow down the socialist regulations that have strangled the western economy. Everybody wants to look at some small part of the market and say that this is the problem or that is the problem when the problem is the big government types trying to command the economy/market to do what they want instead of do what the consumer wants. The health care crisis in the West has been caused by government control of the health care industry. The educational crisis by centralized control of the education industry. What has to be done is to decentralize all of the industries, remove point source failure monopolies caused by the socialist one by facality and allow the free market to work it miracles.
The left has for decades tried to force the west off of fossil fuels and failed because they are commanding that we and industry buy fuel that is many times more expensive then fossil fuels. If the people who are worried about running out of oil will left the free market work we will find a cheap replacement for oil when the cost of oil is too expensive because of market forces. Until then look into the abiotic oil theory and explain how the old fields tht were empty are now slowly refilling with oil. There are places on Federal land where the owners of wells that aren’t allowed to pump have to run some trucks out there at night and pump oil to reduce the pressure in the wells.

The top people in Islam know that it is a sociopolitical box canyon. Its future can only be maintained through absolute force of arms and mind control. Extortion is one of the few tools rattling around in its otherwise empty toolbox.

I think that ISIS/Pelosi is cheering bombing prematurely. Majority of Assad airplanes and equipment were removed before the bombing. Probably because Trump have warned Russians. Also, it is Russians who provide air defense for Assad forces.

The Dems and RINO’s are probably cheering for him for the same reason. There are several questions about just what this raid was suppose to do and two of them is 1) the runways weren’t cratered. This means the airport is still usable without any expensive repairs. 2) the armored hangers weren’t attacked and Tomahawks could have flown inside them and caused massive damage that would have had to be repaired before they could be used.
These and other unanswered questions say that there was a lot more going on then just an attack in retaliation to the release of poison gases. These questions will take many years to answer, years that will probably very chaotic.

How a terrorist brought carnage to the streets of Stockholm
A suspected terrorist targeted young children as he drove a hijacked lorry into a crowded shopping street in Stockholm, witnesses claimed last night.
Infants’ buggies were sent “flying through the air”, one Swedish broadcaster reported, as the vehicle zigzagged along the pedestrianised Queen Street shopping district and embedded itself in the window of a department store.
“It swerved from side to side. It didn’t look out of control, it was trying to hit people,” a second witness, Glen Foran, an Australian tourist, told Reuters. “It hit people, it was terrible. It hit a pram with a kid in it, demolished it.”
Swedish police said on Saturday morning that they believe a 39-year-old suspect was behind the truck attack which left four dead and 15 injured, but declined to comment on reports that the suspect was a father-of-four from Uzbekistan.
The unnamed suspect reportedly confessed to the attack after being detained in Marsta, which is around 25 miles north of the Swedish capital.
Some reports suggested he had previously posted jihadist propaganda on his Facebook page and had images of people injured in the explosion at the Boston marathon in April 2013.
Police found explosives in the truck used in the attack in Stockholm, Swedish television said on Saturday citing multiple unnamed police sources.
Eight victims, including children, remain in hospital, according to Swedish media. Three of the victims died at the scene, a report said, while one died after arriving at the hospital.

“A MANHUNT is on over the Stockholm terror attack which killed four people and left dozens injured.
It comes after two two suspects were arrested following yesterday’s massacre.
The first of the suspects is a 39-year-old man from Uzbekistan who was arrested and is being held on suspicion of “terrorist crimes through murder.”
Police said that the man arrested yesterday in relation to the attack in the centre of Stockholm is also suspected of being the driver of the truck.
Lars Bystrom, a police spokesman said: “The person in question has been arrested as the culprit…in this case the driver.”
“Then, there can be other people who are associated with him, but we do not know that at the current time.”
A second man was thought to have been detained in Hjuslsta, a northern Stockholm suburb on Friday at 11pm – but police have not confirmed it.
Pictures show the second man, who looked younger, being handcuffed and taken away in a police car.
Video footage has emerged showing one man (thought to be the first suspect) wrestled to the ground on a busy street by three police officers.
Shocked pedestrians stood and watched as the officers handcuffed him and led him away.
The deadly attack unfolded in Drottninggatan (Queen Street) when a suspect used a 30-tonne hijacked beer truck to plough through a crowded shopping street at 3pm on Friday.
He crashed into a department store in the centre of the city leaving four people dead and at least 15 people injured.
Local authorities in the capital said early Saturday that six of the injured had been able to leave hospital while eight adults and one child remained hospitalised.
Eyewitnesses said that a child in a pram was among the casualties flung through the air after it was caught in the path of destruction.
Following the attack, police circulated a picture of a man on an escalator wearing a green jacket, grey hoodie and holding a blue phone in connection with the investigation into the attack.
Police said that the suspect ran into a subway after the attack and was dripping with blood from an injury.
The suspect appeared confused about where to run and then headed towards the train.
He was arrested after acting strangely in a shop in Marsta, a suburb of Stockholm.
Bomb disposal experts reportedly found a homemade bomb packed into a suitcase inside the hijacked beer truck.
The discovery of the bomb bears the hallmark of a terrorist attack, but it is not known why the IED failed to detonate.
Authorities later towed the truck away from the scene where the driver had mowed down innocent people.
The Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the truck had been hijacked from Swedish beer maker Spendrups earlier on Friday.
Witnesses described the moment the lorry smashed through stone lion bollards into the pedestrianised area, leaving a trail of blood and debris.
Sources said that the first suspect, a dad, was well known in his community and locals described being “shocked” that he had been arrested in connection with the attack.

Uzbek man arrested over Swedish truck attack that killed four
Swedish police arrested a 39-year-old Uzbek man on suspicion of ramming a hijacked beer delivery truck into crowds in central Stockholm, killing four people and wounding 15 in what they called a terror crime.
Police were increasingly confident they had detained the driver of the truck that ploughed down a busy shopping street and smashed through a store front in the heart of the capital on Friday, but did not name him.
“Nothing points to that we have the wrong person, on the contrary, suspicions have strengthened as the investigation has progressed,” Dan Eliasson, head of Sweden’s national police, told a news conference.
“We still cannot rule out that more people are involved.”
The man had previously figured marginally in intelligence material, but had not been linked to extremists.
“We received intelligence last year, but we did not see any links to extremist circles,” Sapo security police chief Anders Thornberg said.
Eliasson said there were “clear similarities” to an attack last month in London in which six people died, including the assailant who drove a hired car into pedestrians on a bridge.
Vehicles have also been used as weapons in Nice and Berlin in the past year in attacks claimed by Islamic State.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Sweden, which has so far been largely immune from any major incidents of this kind, and police said they tightened security around the nation.
“I think it was just a matter of time, but still one doesn’t think it will happen,” Cecilia Hansson, a 25 year-old nurse, said. “It’s still unreal when it happens this close.”
Police said they had found a suspicious device in the vehicle but said they did not yet know if it was a homemade bomb, as reported by public broadcaster SVT.
SVT said the bomb may have partly exploded, burning the driver, who escaped in the ensuing chaos after mowing through crowds and ramming into the Ahlens department store.
Local authorities in the capital, where flags flew at half mast on buildings including the parliament and royal palace, said that 10 people including a child were still being treated in hospital, with two adults in intensive care.
A gaping hole in the wall of the store showed the force of the impact from the truck, which was removed overnight for examination by forensics experts, and dozens of people gathered to pay their respects and leave flowers, stunned by the attack.
Crown Princess Victoria was among them, laying a bouquet of red roses. “I feel an enormous sadness, I feel empty,” she told Aftonbladet TV, urging Swedes to unite in their grief.
Prime Minister Stefan Lofven also visited the site and struck a defiant tone. “All of us feel anger over what has happened, I also feel the same anger, but we also need to use that anger for something constructive and go forward,” he said.
“We want – and I am convinced the Swedish people also want – to live a normal life. We are an open, democratic society and that is what we will remain.”

The attack was the latest to hit the Nordic region after shootings in the Danish capital Copenhagen killed three people in 2015 and put the country on high alert and the bombing and shooting in 2011 by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik that killed 77 people in Norway.
Although Sweden has not seen a large-scale attack, a failed suicide bombing in December 2010 killed an attacker only a few hundred yards from the site of Friday’s incident.
Swedish police said it was especially difficult to identify “lone wolf” attackers in an open, Nordic society.
“It is very hard if it is a single individual who is not part of a wider conspiracy or a more organized planning,” Thornberg, head of the Sapo security police, told Swedish radio.
“But we have to find these individuals as well.”
Police in Norway’s largest cities and at Oslo airport will carry weapons until further notice following the attack.
Al Qaeda urged its followers to use trucks as a weapon in 2010 and Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack in Nice, France, in July 2016, when a truck killed 86 people celebrating Bastille Day, and one in Berlin in December, when a truck smashed through a Christmas market, killing 12 people.
In last month’s attack in London, a man drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge near Britain’s parliament and then stabbed a policeman to death before being killed himself. Six people died in total.
In February U.S. President Donald Trump falsely suggested there had been an immigration-related security incident in Sweden, to the bafflement of Swedes.
Neutral Sweden has not fought a war in more than 200 years, but its military has taken part in U.N. peacekeeping missions in several conflict zones, including Iraq, Mali and Afghanistan.

The department says in a statement that the slain men included a key facilitator of a recent suicide attack in which 13 people were killed in the city.
The statement says officers were on their way to raid a militant hideout based on information gleaned from Anwarul Haq, the alleged facilitator of the Feb. 13 suicide bombing, when a group of militants briefly snatched him before fleeing Saturday.
Officers managed to trace the suspects and killed 10 of them near a river in Lahore, the statement said.
It said all the slain men were apparently Taliban or members of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of Taliban.”

English Defence League (EDL) supporters faced off against anti-fascist protesters towards the end of their march in Birmingham’s city centre on Saturday.
A fight broke out at Centenary Square, the end point of the demonstration where speeches were given by far right-activists to a sparse audience. One protester was detained during the fracas.
The EDL organised the protest in Birmingham in response to what the far-right group calls an “increase in terrorism” in the city.

Pamela Geller, president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, joined SiriusXM host Raheem Kassam on Friday’s Breitbart News Daily. The conversation began with her thoughts on the previous night’s airstrike against Syria.
“I’m deeply concerned. I don’t understand it,” Geller said. “It seems like a knee-jerk reaction. It doesn’t speak to a coherent policy. It seems to me that Trump has switched sides.”
“It does seem that way,” Kassam agreed. “This is what I’ve been saying for now the last 48 hours: there seems to be a malign influence on him. He’s saying things like, hey, we can get you really good coverage. CNN will stop writing ‘Trump’ on its chyron, they’ll start writing ‘President Trump’ on its chyron. Time magazine will put you on the front, and this time it won’t be scary or a joke. We’ll make you look like a leading statesman around the world. All you have to do is compromise on every single thing you said during the campaign.”
“Yeah,” Geller said with a rueful laugh. “I mean, I’m laughing, but I’m laughing with blood. It’s not funny.”
“I don’t know when he began to care. I mean, that was the beauty of Trump. For those of us that have been in the trenches, you have to become inured to this kind of withering criticism. You have to develop a crocodile skin. He seemed to have it. He seemed to have come to the party with it. It was really sort of the most fantastic thing about him,” she said.
“On the one hand, I always console myself with, ‘It’s not Hillary.’ That’s always my mantra. It’s my religion,” she said. “But this really, I think, is a terrible mistake. Back in 2012, my organization American Freedom Defense Initiative, issued a call to President Obama and to the United Nations warning of an impending genocide in Syria. I’ve been acutely aware of what’s going on in Syria. They did nothing, and millions of Christians and religious minorities were slaughtered. I don’t understand this visceral response. And what is the objective? Who are we partnering with? What quote-unquote ‘rebel gang’ – is it al-Nusra? Which al-Qaeda satellite are we partnering with?”
She shared Kassam’s skepticism about the size of the truly “moderate” rebel force in Syria, and whether Western intelligence services could identify real moderates and work with them effectively. Kassam noted ISIS, al-Qaeda, and the other “real, real enemies” of the United States were celebrating the attack, and asked what conclusions should be drawn from it.
“It tells us that we don’t know what we’re doing there,” Geller replied. “I don’t know what we’re doing there. I understand the quote-unquote ‘humanitarian,’ but I’m always first and foremost concerned about national interest. What is the national interest of this for us?”
“Look, Obama gave Syria to Russia. He did. He gave it to Russia, and so this could very well escalate into something truly unforeseen,” she warned. “I just think the United States should have taken action in a comprehensive, and logical, and strategic way years ago. Right now, it’s just a huge catastrophe, and what’s he doing? Is he putting a finger in the dam? I don’t think so. I don’t even think it’s that. Is it just this action?”
Geller stressed that it was President Barack Obama’s policies that led to this moment.
“He turned Syria over to Russia, and so this could escalate to World War III, and for what? For Syria? Seriously?” she said.
“My concern is that like President Bush, President Trump has two factions warring with each other. In the case of President Bush, it was Rumsfeld-Cheney-John Bolton, the hawks as it were, versus the trimmers, versus the RINOs like Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Hadley Burns,” she judged. “And the trimmers always win, because it seems like the safe bet. It seems like the quote-unquote ‘extremists’ are taking it a step too far.”
“But the fact of the matter is, it’s the trimmers that get you into trouble, because you can’t have a bold policy, you can’t go after a bold policy limp-wristed,” Geller warned.
“I’m concerned about McMaster, who is just another one who denies the motivating ideology of the terrorists,” she said of President Trump’s National Security Adviser. “He says jihad terror is not Islamic. This hampers our ability to respond to terrorism effectively. You can’t defeat an enemy that you don’t understand.”
Geller and Kassam found this a contradiction of Trump’s campaign promise to speak forthrightly about the dangers of radical Islamic terrorism.
“He promised to deal effectively with the terrorism problem and call it Islamic,” Geller recalled. “This is exactly what Obama and Hillary refused to do. McMaster represents a defeat for the Trump promise to drain the swamp. It’s a retreat from his stated goals. Believe me, it pains me to say this. It gives me no pleasure.”
“And Mattis, that ‘terrorism defames Islam’ – what book are they reading?” she added. “Are they not reading the Koran? I mean listen, just because you talk about it this way doesn’t mean that all Muslims are terrorists. But we don’t have to pat on the back every Muslim that doesn’t want to kill us.”
“Do you think Jared Kushner or Dina Powell has ever read the Koran cover-to-cover? Do they understand the enemy?” Kassam asked, referring to President Trump’s son-in-law and deputy national security adviser for strategy, respectively.
“No, I think Kushner’s a Manhattan liberal. That’s what I think,” Geller replied. “And I think that he may be a very smart kid, but that’s got nothing to do with the price of eggs in China. I think that he has undue influence. I think that’s why you’re seeing these moves with the settlements in Israel, the quote-unquote ‘two-state solution,’ inviting these Palestinian terrorists into this country…”
Kassam interjected to suggest adding Ivanka Trump’s reported meetings with Planned Parenthood to the list.
“Yes, this is Kushner. I don’t know how much we’re going to have to lose before Trump gets back on track. He’ll have to get back on track, because we’ve suffered under these failed policies, for the past really 15 years,” Geller said, quoting Albert Einstein’s famed admonition that “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result” is the definition of insanity.

Here is the Senator from South Carolina, a man with great power in this country, telling Tucker Carlson with a straight face that taking out Saddam was a good idea. Additionally, he said taking out Libya was a good idea. Now he wants to take out Assad, because ‘he’s killing his own people.’
It’s called a civil war, actually, and he wasn’t killing anyone until American sponsored ISIS invaded his country.
For about a year, I’ve been blogging a lot of politics, hoping that Trump’s message of ‘America first’ was genuine. I see now, much to my dismay, that’s not the case. While some of you don’t take issue with the Syrian attack, I view it as the rubicon that Trump crossed to be part of the club, one with John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Nancy Pelosi.
This isn’t about supporting Assad, but about setting priorities and properly analyzing risk. In many respects, this is much akin to trading. We place bets and hope that they work out. But any good trader knows that the monetary loss isn’t the most important factor in a bad trade, but the time lost in hoping for a return.
How does destroying Assad help you? How does spending $84m on 59 cruise missiles help towards that elusive infrastructure bill?
It doesn’t.

What most people ignore if they ever knew them is the fact that 1) Saddam had an al Qaeda training camp in Iraq 2) was giving a lot of money to al Qaeda 3) was one of the people who pointed bin Laden at New York City 4) was trying to arrange the murder of George H. Syria: Operations resume in Shayrat airbase after US missile strike
The Syrian airforce resumed operations on Saturday, after restoration works were carried out in Al-Shayrat air base.
Though the runway of the base was not damaged by any of 59 Tomahawk missiles launched by US forces, six MiG-23 aircrafts, as well as a radar station and some other building were ruined.
At least four people were reportedly killed by the strike, though some sources claim there were 10 victims.

A woman in Berlin is planning to marry the brother of assassin Anis Amri and bring him back to live in the city.
The woman, known only as Susanne K., 34, got to know Walid Amri, 31, on Facebook in the days following the December 19 attack, where 12 people died and dozens more were injured after Anis crashed a truck into a Christmas market.
They hooked up on the social networking site on Christmas day – two days after the killer was shot dead by police in Milan, Italy.
‘I sent a message of sympathy to him and his family,’ she told Germany’s Bild newspaper. Bild added; ‘Amri was touched by the kind gesture and opened his heart to the stranger.’
They remain in contact daily using French as he speaks no German and she no Arabic. He calls her ‘mon amour’ – my love – and she refers to him as ‘mon coeur,’ or my heart.
Bild says the duo are talking of a wedding but are short of cash. The mother-of-three added; ‘Money plays a part. I can’t finance everything. But he knows that.’
Her children were fathered by Palestinian and Kurdish partners. ‘Now it’s just a Tunisian!’ she jokes.
He tells her that the children pose no problem to their planned wedding, adding; ‘Your children are my children.’
The plan is for her to fly to Tunisia in the summer, marry, and bring back Amri to Berlin – if the authorities would allow it.
She says she has already lost friends due to her cyberspace love affair with Amri, but added: ‘Walid is also just a human being. He couldn’t do anything about what his brother did.’

After each Islamist terrorist attack in the West, the public is divided into two camps: one angry and one indifferent. The problem with defeating Islamist terrorism seems to be that either it is attacked by conservatives who call Islam an evil cult or it is forgiven entirely by liberal apologists. What, then, is the answer?
One of the main failures in Western analyses of the origins of terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa is that the West attributes them to a lack of democracy and a lack of respect for human rights. This is, indeed, part of the cause, but the root of the problem is a lack of development and modernity. U.S. President Donald Trump did not exaggerate when he said that the Obama administration’s foreign policy was disastrous. It was catastrophic mainly for two reasons. One was the knee-jerk support for the “Arab Spring” and for extremist Islamic political groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. The second was the alliances the Obama administration built with unreliable countries such as Qatar, which supports radical political groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, Obama made the mistake of continuing to try to appease Iran’s theocratic regime.
The Arab Spring’s uncalculated, hasty attempt to establish so-called democracy only generated more turmoil and chaos in the region. Certain radical political groups simply exploited the elections to serve their own political and sectarian agendas; that swoop for power only resulted in more authoritarian and dictatorial regimes, as have played out, for instance, in Egypt, where we have witnessed the murder of civilians and police officers by the Muslim Brotherhood. In other countries, the situation is even worse; attempts to install democracy have totally destroyed the state and facilitated the spread of terrorist militias, as in Libya.
Clashes at French far-right leader Le Pen rally in Corsica
PARIS (Reuters) – Skirmishes broke out on Saturday ahead of a campaign rally by French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, prompting the removal of more than a dozen protesters and the evacuation of the hall in Ajaccio, Corsica.
Latest polls ahead of the April-May French presidential election show the race tightening, with Le Pen – leader of the anti-immigrant National Front – neck-and-neck with centrist Emmanuel Macron, who is expected to beat her in the runoff.
Around 50 people demonstrated in front of the venue in Ajaccio, chanting “We do not want the National Front”, according to local newspaper Corse Matin.
Some of them managed to enter the hall where Le Pen was expected to speak. They clashed with Le Pen’s security team and fired teargas, prompting the evacuation of the hall, the newspaper said.
The event was moved to another venue, French television BFM TV said.
Le Pen’s campaign manager David Rachline said on twitter that local authorities had not done enough to secure the venue and had allowed far-left “militia” to come too close.
Rachline said a National Front activist was seriously injured during the clashes.

Two weeks before the French cast their first presidential ballots, the spectre of victory for the far-right leader who promises to crack down on immigration and outlaw gay marriage sends shivers down many a spine.
Pollsters say the anti-EU firebrand can count on the unwavering support of about one in four voters to get her past the first round of voting on April 23.
Although they also say the National Front (FN) leader cannot win in the decisive May 7 runoff whoever she faces, a great many pundits were wrong about Brexit and Donald Trump after failing to feel the populist pulse.
And with one in three voters still undecided at this late stage, pollsters would be wise to hedge their bets.
Predictions of a “nightmare” Le Pen presidency abound in bookstores and the media.
The 48-year-old candidate poses a “genuine peril”, according to Matthieu Croissandeau, editor-in-chief of the left-leaning newsweekly L’Obs, which ran a special report last month titled “Black Scenario of the First 100 Days”.
Dozens of actors, singers and other artists put their names to an op-ed in the Liberation daily last Sunday warning: “The National Front is on the threshold of power. We call for a bulwark against Marine Le Pen… in the name of freedom of thought and creativity.”

Reminiscent of the runup to Trump’s election last year, many artists have said they would prefer exile to living under Le Pen. Like Americans virulently opposed to Trump, they say they are looking to Canada as a refuge.
“Just in case, I’m making plans to move to Quebec,” leftwing comedian Guy Bedos wrote in a book published in March. “I have an absolute aversion for the Le Pen family,” the 82-year-old told AFP.
In 2002, Le Pen’s father Jean-Marie Le Pen, now sidelined from the FN because of views even farther to the right than his daughter’s, caused a political earthquake in France by winning through to the runoff.
But in that second round, voters of various political stripes reluctantly joined conservatives to elect Jacques Chirac and block the far right.
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, the French-Mauritian author who won the Nobel prize for literature in 2008, said as far back as 2015 that he would hand in his French passport if Le Pen becomes president.
Others, including public figures, are promising active resistance to a government led by the far right.
France’s ambassador to Japan, Thierry Dana, wrote in an op-ed last month that he would “shelve all diplomatic duties” if Le Pen is elected.
The foreign ministry had to remind Dana of his obligation to remain neutral over the election.
Also throwing neutrality to the wind was Francois Durpaire, an educator and historian who co-authored a comic book titled “La Presidente” (using the feminine form of the noun) depicting France under Le Pen.
“For me as a professor of education sciences the question I would ask the next day (after a Le Pen victory) is: ‘How do you teach in French schools under Le Pen?'” he told AFP.
“I know what to do. I’ll stay in France, I’ll respect the outcome of the democratic vote, but I will resist with all my might any measure that goes against French law,” he said, citing Le Pen’s pledge to give French nationals priority access to public services including schools.
Keeping non-citizens out of French schools would be a “red line” for Durpaire.
“We will be able to mount not just moral resistance, but also legal resistance,” he said, noting: “Judges are fighting Trump, not just far-left activists.”
The head of the International Human Rights Federation, Dimitri Christopoulos, also said he would join the battle against a President Le Pen.
Her victory “would be a political defeat for human rights, but we would continue to fight,” he told AFP. “The ideological battle will be an existential priority for our societies,” said Christopoulos, a staunch defender of migrants’ rights who divides his time between France and Greece.
Laurent Joffrin, editor-in-chief of the leftwing daily Liberation, said resistance should begin with the legislative elections in June that will determine the shape of the future government.
“We won’t have fascism on day one,” he said. “France has a constitution and institutions, and laws need a majority to pass in parliament. So the immediate fight is to prevent the FN from winning a majority to implement its agenda.”
Joffrin also noted that if Le Pen wins, she is unlikely to have enough support outside her party to form a coalition government and would be forced into a co-habitation arrangement.

In Indonesia, 212 is the number used to denote a specific mass protest from 2nd December last year. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims marched against the Christian governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok,, over allegations of blasphemy regarding his use of the Qu’ran in campaigning against opponents. The march was organised, in part, with the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa. It was pretty hardline conservative and the protest demanded the government prosecute and jail Ahok based on the council’s fatwa, declaring him to be a blasphemer. This year, a 212 2.0 march with similar aims was held on the 21st of February.
Ahok caused a great deal of controversy in Indonesia after he referred to a verse in the Qur’an while campaigning, specifically the verse Al Maidah 5: 51 and said that people should not believe Islamic leaders who claim it forbids Muslims from being led by non-Muslims. He has since repeatedly apologised for his statements, but it hasn’t stemmed the protest.

The soldier was fatally injured in Nangarhar province in the east of the country.

“THE German Chancellor has announced plans to expand security personnel in the country to help put her fellow countrymen and women at ease amid a growing threat of terrorism.
The forceful speech earlier today comes after a truck killed four people and injured 15 others yesterday in Stockholm, Sweden.
Angela Merkel laid out plans for more security personnel at a local meeting of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Grimmen.
Swedish officials have called the truck attack an act of terrorism after the vehicle rammed into a department store in Stockholm.
In a speech to the audience, the German leader outlined plans to expand security personnel throughout the country, to protect Germans from petty crime as well as terror attacks.
She said: “A state must be responsible for its interior and exterior security.
“We know that many people are shaken in their confidence at the moment, whether it’s just from burglaries or from terror attacks.
“That’s why it is important that we provide more personnel; that’s why it’s important that we respect security forces.”
Mrs Merkel then went on to clearly spell out that people who come to Germany to start a new life must adhere to German values.
She said that obeying the country’s laws was not enough and that people must also follow the national way of life.
In a strong tone, the German Chancellor said that there can be no compromise on the country’s values.
She explained: “Integration means that our values, not just our laws, but also what is derived from these laws – tolerance, freedom of religion, freedom of press, and respect for the others – are practiced in our daily life.
“That’s why Germany must again and again make sure that everybody who lives here adhere to this.
“There is no compromise and we have to be clear on that.”
She also took time in her speech to condemn Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following his recent controversial outbursts.
Mr Erdogan has recently provoked fury from European nations after branding German MPs “Nazis” as well as condemning politicians in the Netherlands and France.
This came after rallies in support of a referendum that would give Mr Erdogan even more power were cancelled in European countries.
Mrs Merkel said that the Turkish President had acted in an “absolutely unacceptable” manner.
She then reminded her audience that she was against Turkish membership of the EU in 2005, and that “this position has not changed”.
The German leader added: “I was among those people who have always said that Turkey should not become member of the European Union, despite that fact that almost everybody thought that Turkey should become member of the European Union.
“We need a privileged partnership, not a membership.””

A Mestre mosque frequented by three Kosovars allegedly planning to bomb Venice’s Rialto Bridge has been given three days to close, sources said Friday.
The order was handed to the Bangladeshi clerics who run the mosque, informing them that its activity did not comply with its official use.
The Kosovar jihadists, who lived in central Venice, were arrested last month after a probe in which they were taped allegedly saying it would be easy to find paradise by bombing Venice “because of all the Christians here”.

“The government in Ankara is doing all it can to reach Turkish voters in Germany. They are now receiving letters urging them to vote “yes” in the country’s upcoming referendum. The legality of the move is questionable.
Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is urging Turkish voters living in Germany to vote “yes” in the referendum to change the country’s constitution. He has done so in a letter sent to all Turkish voters residing in Germany.
The letter, which lists all of the ruling AKP’s (Justice and Development Party) “accomplishments,” states that Turkey now has an historic opportunity. Moreover, it is written that: “You, who with the ‘sweat’ of your hands, have contributed to the progress that Turkey has achieved, can participate in the future of our country. Every single vote that is cast between March 27 and April 9 will contribute to the stability of our country.”
The referendum would significantly expand the powers of the presidency, currently held by Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Letter ‘violates propaganda ban’
According to lawyer and former Green Party federal parliamentarian Mehmet Kilic, Prime Minister Yildirim, who is also the chairman of the AKP, has “violated the foreign election propaganda ban for Turkish political parties.” Kilic points out that the law, which was passed in Turkey in 2008, prohibits political parties from propagandizing outside the country.
Furthermore, Kilic says that people with dual citizenship also find themselves in a unique situation because the country in which they reside has priority. Thus, the letter is a violation of German law as well. “This means that the personal data of people with German as well as Turkish citizenship has been given to a political party in Turkey,” says Kilic.
In this instance, people with dual citizenship have the option of contacting German authorities to lodge a complaint. But those who only have Turkish citizenship are also free to contact Turkish consulates or the Turkish Attorney General’s Office to file complaints about their data being passed on…”

“France on Saturday expelled controversial Swiss Islamist preacher Hani Ramadan who posed “a serious threat to public order”, the interior ministry said.
Ramadan, whose brother is the intellectual Tariq Ramadan and whose grandfather founded Egypt’s radical Muslim Brotherhood, was arrested in Colmar, eastern France, while attending a conference.
He was “known in the past to have adopted behaviour and made remarks which pose a serious threat on French soil,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The interior ministry and the forces of law and order are fully mobilised and will continue to fight ceaselessly against extremism and radicalisation,” Interior Minister Matthias Fekl said in the statement.
In 2002 Hani Ramadan was sacked from his teaching post in Switzerland after writing an article in French newspaper Le Monde in support of the stoning of adulterers and suggesting that AIDS was a divine punishment.
Six years later he won 345,000 Swiss francs (just over 200,000 euros) compensation over the sacking.

APRIL 08 2017 NBC NEWS – Sebastian Gorka Made Nazi-Linked Vitezi Rend ‘Proud’ by Wearing Its Medal
BUDAPEST, Hungary — A group with alleged historical links to Nazi Germany has told NBC News it was “proud” when President Donald Trump’s deputy assistant wore its medal.
Controversy has swirled around Sebastian Gorka, one of Trump’s top counterterrorism advisers, ever since he attended the president’s Jan. 20 Inaugural Ball wearing the honorary medal of Hungarian nationalist organization Vitezi Rend.
NBC News traveled to Hungary to dig deeper into Gorka’s ties with the group, speaking with members of the organization as well as with locals who knew him when he lived there.
“When he appeared on U.S. television … with the medal of the Vitez Order … it made me really proud,” Vitezi Rend spokesman Andras Horvath said in the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Vitezi Rend is also known as the Order of Vitez.
Three people, including one of Gorka’s former political allies, said he was a well-known member of Vitezi Rend back in Hungary, a charge he strongly denies.
Gorka’s decision to wear the medal — which he said was awarded to his Hungarian-born father — has provoked outrage among Jewish groups.
While in Budapest, NBC News also spoke with Andras Heisler, the Hungarian vice-president of the New York-based World Jewish Congress, who said that wearing the medal “isn’t a good message for a democratic society.”
Under the Direction of Nazis
Vitezi Rend was founded in 1920 by Hungarian ruler Miklos Horthy to award medals to Hungarian veterans of World War I. But the group’s history became murky after the country allied with Nazi Germany in 1938.
Heisler told NBC News that members of the organization were likely complicit in the murder of some of the hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews toward the end of World War II.
During the war, the State Department listed Vitezi Rend among a group of “organizations under the direction of the Nazi government of Germany.” And Horthy, its founder, once said that “I have always been an anti-Semite throughout my life,” according to “The Jews of Hungary,” a 1995 book by Hungarian-Jewish historian Raphael Patai.
The Soviet-allied communist government outlawed Vitezi Rend when they took control of the country after the war. But since then, several private organizations have emerged claiming to be the true successors of the group and its ideals.
Horvath, the spokesman interviewed by NBC News, represents the most prominent modern-day faction. He vehemently denied his organization of 5,000 members is anti-Semitic or extremist, although he conceded that his group has no Jewish members.
According to its followers, Vitezi Rend is merely “a politically independent organization with Christian-conservative values that keeps its military traditions,” said Vitez John Molar-Gazso, the captain of another modern-day faction of the group. “It has never been radical or a fascist group. Its members have always defended the nation’s interests and fought for the Hungarian communities,” he said.
Similarly, Gorka has denied he has ever been a sworn-in member of Vitezi Rend — whose name translates to “valiant order.”
In several statements to the media, he has explained that he wore the medal to honor his late father, Paul Gorka, who was awarded it for his fight against communism during Hungary’s period of communist rule. He has given a similar reasoning for occasionally using the initial “v.” in his name — a mark used by Vitezi Rend members to show the order has been bestowed upon them. He said it was in remembrance of his dad.
Last month, three Vitezi Rend officials told American-Jewish newspaper The Forward that Sebastian Gorka was one of their order.
The reports about Gorka prompted the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, an American civil-rights group, to call for Sebastian Gorka’s resignation, or at least an investigation into his alleged links with the far-right.
“How many ducks in the Trump White House must walk, talk and quack Anti-Semitically before our country wakes up and sees the greater problem?” it told NBC News in a statement. “Who among us wears a medal of a Nazi-sympathetic organization to remember loved ones?”
When asked about the allegations in NBC News’ investigation, Sebastian Gorka dismissed them as “fake news” and pointed to a statement he gave to online Jewish magazine Tablet last month.
“I have never been a member of the Vitez Rend. I have never taken an oath of loyalty to the Vitez Rend,” he told the publication. “Since childhood, I have occasionally worn my father’s medal and used the ‘v.’ initial to honor his struggle against totalitarianism.”
He told NBC News he “completely distanced myself” from any white-supremacist or Nazi ideology. He declined to answer specific questions about NBC News’ reporting.
Horvath, the Vitezi Rend spokesman, said Paul Gorka was a senior Vitezi Rend lieutenant for the western Hungarian city of Sopron and its surroundings.
“This is, in the various ranks of the order, an advanced level,” he said, his own Vitezi Rend medal on proud display.
The 69-year-old was speaking on the banks of the Danube river in Hungary’s storied post-Soviet capital, where some buildings still bear bullet-holes from a failed anti-Soviet revolution in 1956.
Paul Gorka “was more than an average Vitezi member … I had good experiences and conversations with [him],” the spokesman said, his grey hair and trimmed moustache matching his relaxed yet matter-of-fact demeanor.
Although Horvath was unable to confirm that Sebastian Gorka was a member himself, he said it was possible. There are many chapters all over the world, he said, any of which could have conducted the inauguration ceremony.
He explained that the first sons of Vitezi Rend members can either choose hereditary membership or to apply in their own names.
“The membership can be inherited by the children and this membership enters into force when they participate in an inauguration ceremony,” said Molár-Gazsó, the captain of the other Vitezi Rend group.
The Road to Piliscsaba
Sebastian Gorka, 47, was born in London in 1970 to Hungarian parents and gained American citizenship in 2012. Before finding his seat in the president’s inner-circle, he spent years in his parents’ former homeland in the 1990s and 2000s.
After interviewing Horvath and Heisler in Budapest, NBC News drove 14 miles north to the small, sleepy town of Piliscsaba, where several prominent locals alleged that Sebastian Gorka was a member of Vitezi Rend.
The future White House aide ran for mayor here in 2006, but was unable to persuade its population of 7,500 that he was the right man for the job. He came third out of three candidates but only lost by a margin of 39 votes.
“Everybody knew that he was member of the Order of Vitez,” according to Csaba Gáspár, who came in second that day but later became mayor between 2010 and 2014.
This was corroborated by one of Sebastian Gorka’s political allies during that campaign.
”I knew that Sebastian Gorka was a member of Vitezi Rend, even then,” said Dr. Gabor Solti, a respected Hungarian geologist who ran for the town council on Sebastian Gorka’s ticket in 2006. Solti, who served as mayor between 2009 and 2010, is not known to be a member of the group.
Although the three people NBC News interviewed in the town said emphatically that Sebastian Gorka made no effort to hide his membership while he campaigned in the town, they did not provide any evidence of their claims.
Picturesque Piliscsaba couldn’t contrast more with Sebastian Gorka’s current environs of Washington, D.C.
A regular line of cars run along the two-lane road that cuts the town in half, but most are just passing through, stopping for little more than a bathroom break.
A large Catholic church next to a cake shop marks the center of the town, which is surrounded by rolling green hills.
Erika Laszlo also knew Sebastian Gorka during his failed mayoral bid. Back then, she was the chairwoman of a local environmentalist group called For Piliscsaba, and as part of the group’s activities she wrote leaflets about the campaign.
“It was common knowledge he was a Vitezi,” she said, petting her Labrador during a long afternoon at her woodland home. “And for many people this was a shine on the armor, if you like, because it was the old, golden days before the war.”
The Gorkas’ controversial past does not end with the father and son.
In the 1980s, Sebastian Gorka’s mother, Susan Gorka, worked as a translator for David Irving, the discredited British historian who caused outrage by suggesting the Holocaust did not happen, or was at least greatly exaggerated.
A British judge ruled in 2000 that Irving was a “Holocaust denier … anti-Semitic and racist, and that he associates with right-wing extremists who promote neo-Nazism.” And in 2006, he was sentenced to three years in prison in Austria on charges of denying the Holocaust.
Irving wrote an email to NBC News describing his warm working relationship with Susan Gorka.
“His mother was very helpful, checked translations in the 1980s and tapes of interviews,” Irving said. “My impression of both Gorkas [Susan and Paul] was at all times good.”
NBC News attempted to ask Sebastian Gorka about his mother’s involvement with Irving but he declined to answer detailed questions.
V is for Vitezi
In addition to wearing the group’s medal, Sebastian Gorka has occasionally used the initial “v.” in his name — short for Vitezi. He claimed this was merely something to honor his father, but experts interviewed by NBC News were in no doubt that it signified his membership.
“I called him Vitez, firstly because he used to call himself Vitez while being in Hungary,” according to Gabor Horvath, managing editor of Hungary’s Nepszava newspaper. “And second to let the readers know that anyone claiming to belong to the order … it means that he is a right-wing conservative.”
Gabor Horvath knew all too well that the “v.” indicated someone was a Vitezi Rend member — his own grandfather belonged to the order. He too could have inherited the title had it not been for his father marrying a Jewish woman and breaking the family lineage.
“In theory I might have been Vitezi myself … not that I wanted to,” he said, speaking in his newsroom back in Budapest. “The original charter of the order prescribed a Christian family life.”
Paul Gorka was born in Budapest in 1930. As a 15-year-old boy in 1944, he “fought with a submachine gun through the ruins of the Hungarian capital,” according to Sebastian Gorka’s 2016 book “Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War.”
He didn’t specify which side his father fought on — Soviet or Nazi — but a large part of Paul Gorka’s life thereafter was dedicated to fighting against the former.
After the war, Paul Gorka joined Hungary’s underground anti-Soviet resistance. He was caught, jailed and tortured, according to his son’s account, but then broke free during the failed revolution of 1956.
It was these anti-Soviet acts that earned him the medal in 1979 that his son would wear to Trump’s ball.
Ardent Nationalism
Miklos Horthy, Hungary’s wartime leader and the founder of Vitezi Rend, remains a hugely divisive figure even today. Some say he attempted to protect Hungarian Jews from the Nazis, others point to a series of anti-Semitic laws he passed and claim his actions led to the deaths of tens of thousands.
Similarly, the actions of Vitezi Rend’s original members are the source of some disagreement.
The spokesmen for the two modern-day factions said their predecessors were not complicit in the deportation of at least 400,000 Hungarian Jews to Nazi death camps in 1944.
But many experts disagree.
“Vitezi Rend had a lot of anti-Semitic, racist members,” according to Heisler, the vice-president of the World Jewish Congress. “The organization had some members who were actors in the killing of the Jews,” as well as taking Jewish property, he said.
Historian Eva S. Balogh fled Hungary to the U.S. in 1956 before gaining her Ph.D. and teaching at Yale. She said that “the likelihood that a good number of the [Vitezi] Order’s members embraced the ideas of Hitler is fairly strong.”
Almost “the entire Hungarian high command belonged to the [Vitezi] Order,” according to Balogh, who also runs the news website Hungarian Spectrum and has written extensively about the Gorkas. She said that these Hungarian elites “were avid supporters of Germany and eager to join Germany’s war efforts.”
Today’s Vitezi Rend members, according to Balogh, follow the same “ethical and moral code” as their predecessors in the 1920s — “ardent nationalism, a fostering of Hungarian military traditions [and] an attraction to right-wing ideologies.”
Aside from the question of whether or not Sebastian Gorka was a member of Vitezi Rend, his credentials as a counterterrorism expert have also been called into question.
Before joining Trump’s team, he served in the British Army Territorial Reserves, worked as an adviser at Hungary’s Ministry of Defense, offered his expertise as a think-tank analyst, and worked as an editor at the right-wing news website Breitbart.
The New York Times has been among his outspoken critics in this regard. A headline in a Times opinion piece described Sebastian Gorka as “the Islamophobic huckster in the White House” and criticized his worldview of seeing “Islam as the problem, rather than the uses to which Islam has been put by violent extremists.”

“Children at an Islamic primary school in Birmingham could be at risk of radicalisation, school inspection group Ofsted has warned.
Government inspectors criticised the management at the independent Birmingham Muslim School (BMS), warning of extremism concerns.
The Birmingham Mail reports inspectors carried out an unannounced visit in January at the school that educates 95 boys and girls aged four to eleven.
The report speaks of a “weak culture of safeguarding”, including staff seemingly unaware of “the risks of pupils being radicalised”.
The school had not met “all of the independent school standards that were checked during this inspection”, it adds.
“Consequently, there is the potential for pupils to be exposed to extremist views through contact with older pupils or adults out of school, such as when on school trips.”
Although the school was good in terms of teaching children reading and writing, and students enjoyed lessons, inspectors said not a single concern about a child being radicalised had ever been logged in the school’s 16-year history – a scenario they describe as “inconceivable”.
“Staff have an inconsistent understanding of who to speak to if they have concerns. They show little awareness of the signs of possible abuse, neglect or radicalisation,” the report adds.
It evens says that children at the school are at risk of going missing from education, making them vulnerable to “trafficking, exploitation and abuse”.
Headteacher Janet Laws, also known as Aisha Abdrabba, is married to Ghoma Abdrabba, who appeared on a U.S. Treasury list for allegedly funding the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, an organisation accused of working with Al Qaeda.
Mr Abdrabba and two other men subsequently appeared on a UN sanctions list and had their assets frozen. They strongly denied any connection with terrorism and their names were later removed from the list.
Ofsted also said: “The relationship between governors, charity trustees, the headteacher and the directors of the company called ‘The Albayan Educational Foundation Ltd’ is very opaque. It is not clear who the proprietor is and, thus, who is accountable for the work of the school.”
Finally, the report claimed the school was not fully preparing children for the British way of life.
“They learn about other religions. However, they are not taught enough about different backgrounds and ways of life to fully prepare them to encounter the diversity of modern British society.””
