Sporadic violence in Johannesburg as South Africans protest against Zuma

Cruise missile strike in Syria: Assad regime – and Russia – on notice

In the early morning hours of 7 April in Syria – between 8 and 10 PM Eastern on 6 April, in the U.S. – two U.S. Navy Aegis destroyers began launching Tomahawk cruise missiles at an air base in Syria just east of the city of Homs. In total, the ships launched at least 59 cruise missiles. All were reportedly directed at the single air base, indicating the attack was meant to take the facility out of operation.
President Donald Trump, in a recorded address (video below), explained that USS Ross (DDG-71) and USS Porter (DDG-78) were striking the air base in Syria from which the chemical weapons attack that inflicted ghastly damage on civilians in Idlib Province was launched on Tuesday.
The target, according to the latest reporting, was Shayrat Air Base, located about 15 miles southeast of Homs. Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin indicated in the 10 PM hour that the Pentagon would be providing a track of the Syrian Su-24 Fencer – a tactical bomber – that it says conducted the chemical weapons attack on 4 April. In other words, the U.S. military has direct evidence that the attacking aircraft was a Syrian bomber jet. (This is not only feasible, it’s probable and routine.)
Shayrat Air Base was never one of Assad’s biggest, most developed bases. It is overshadowed by T4 air base (often referred to as Tiyas Air Base) further east, which has been the front line of the fight against ISIS for some months now.

It will come as no surprise to most readers that the two organizations filing “ethics complaints” about Devin Nunes ?

It is also obvious that the purpose of the complaints is not to determine whether Nunes has committed any ethics violations in pursuing the back-door surveillance of Trump by the Obama administration.
There is no case to be made that Nunes committed any ethics violations. The specific allegation is that he improperly disclosed classified information. But he has been very careful in his public disclosures and wording, and he has every reason to assume – as he has said – that he will be fully vindicated.
The actual purpose is to distract the public, and frighten weaker-kneed Republicans with the prospect of “allegations” and “appearances.” Nunes himself won’t weaken, so the tactic is to try to weaken the ground he’s standing on. Make it harder to talk about the actual issue (back-door surveillance of Trump), which will now require fighting past the network of baffles set up with the “ethics complaints.” Make Nunes’s fellow Republicans flee from him. One UK school is teaching its students hunting and outdoors skills — and the results are amazing
A school in Eastbourne, England, is taking an alternative approach to teaching children, and it involves things that many people in the United States’ school system would consider dangerous and unnecessary. However, the curriculum at West Rise Junior seems to be helping the students learn more than ever.
“Children taught to shoot clay pigeons as well as dissecting real dead pigeons. Nine-year-olds skinning rabbits and water buffalo roaming the school’s marshland. Not Hogwarts, run by Bear Grylls, but a day in the life of one state primary school in the middle of a council estate in Eastbourne,” Channel 4 reported.
The classroom does seem like something out of a storybook. The headteacher, Mike Fairclough, has shoulder length blond hair, wears a black fur coat made out of real bear fur, vintage 1970s bellbottom jeans, and rides around on a quad-bike. The marshland where the school is situated features water buffalo, beehives, turkeys, a goat, and a herd of sheep.

To radical Islamist groups, Islam is not a religion which all are free to pursue; it is a weapon. It is the most powerful tool that can be wielded with manipulative skill to control entire populations. Beneath their fierce rule, every aspect of daily life is dictated. What is worn, what is eaten, what you say and what you write are all scrutinized; violations of these stringent laws are met with extreme punishments. Can you imagine making a joke and facing death as a result? Can you imagine the constant fear of doing the wrong thing, saying the wrong thing, when you have seen people beaten, stoned, or killed in the street for nothing more than a mild transgression?
Freedom of speech and press are the Islamists’ top enemies. They are targeted on a regular basis, making it difficult or impossible for the truth to be revealed to the world. While others may take their privacy for granted, the people living under this kind of tyranny must think about everything they say and do. Sometimes even the bravest of souls turn away in the face of such intimidation. Can it really be as restrictive as described? Yes, and far worse than you can imagine.
Sina Dehghan, 21, for example, was arrested by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) when he was 19 for “insulting Islam”. Charges were brought against him for insulting the Prophet Muhammad on the messaging app LINE.
Most unfortunate of all is that Muslims worldwide continue to agitate for sharia law knowing full well how cases like that of Sina Dehghan will be the norm.
This is yet one more reason why Islam has such an unpromising future. Just as the Soviet Union was brought down through a combination of internal corruption, inability to compete, and growing freedom of information, so will Islam face increasing competition in the marketplace of ideas.
To date, Islam’s success has relied almost exclusively upon force of arms and harsh punishment for minor or even perceived slights. Actual truth plays a vanishingly small role (if any) in Islamic thought and, as literacy and exposure to world view information increases, the almost universal lack of economic success in a majority of Islamic countries will become increasingly apparent to Muslims.
The doctrinal structure of Islam is so ossified and inflexible that it has no adaptive abilities. In a pre-technological world, this model was able to subsist to some marginal degree. However, modernization literally dictates increasing dissatisfaction among Muslims.
Try to imagine a school where every student is taught to be a conniving bully. This is how Islam manifests on the world stage. When combined with flagrant inequality, the overarching dysfunctionality of Islamic theocracy imbues it with a brittleness that has little chance of withstanding the evolutionary forces of modernization.
This rigidity means that once cracks begin to propagate within its structure, it will only be a matter of time before there is catastrophic failure. When the growing impatience of external powers over constant attacks, deceit, and invasion finally boils over, the shock wave that results will sweep all before it with little concern for distinguishing about guilt or innocence—merely that there is a resolute end to this constant predation upon quality-of-life and liberty in the free world.
When that day arrives, Islam will have little in the way of excuses to make. Far too many people have come to realize that the prefixes of “radical”, “fundamentalist”, or “extremist” are meaningless and that Islam alone is (and always has been) the core issue. Only the collusion of Socialist Liberals has managed to delay a more general perception about how all terrorism is devoutly Koranic in nature and that there will never be any reasonable expectation for change within Islam.
A world that is constantly beleaguered by jihadist assaults eventually will lose all sympathy or compassion for the plight of Muslims, no matter how oppressed they may be by their own governments and institutions. When that moment is reached, not even nuclear weapons in Muslim hands will forestall the reckoning that, like some obscene butcher’s bill, relentlessly continues to amass against Islam’s constant antagonism of all other creeds.

4 Risks After Bombing Assad’s Air Base
The U.S. acted quickly and decisively in response to a chemical attack by the Syrian Air Force on a rebel-held town in Idlib Province, enforcing the previously-unenforced “red line” by bombing the air base used. But any military action risks unintended consequences.
The evidence proving that the Assad regime was responsible was strong enough to convince President Trump to take action. His skepticism of the intelligence community is well-known, as is his intense aversion to military intervention in other country’s affairs. Trump’s turnaround was particularly surprising given his opposition to overthrowing Assad and his secretary of state’s comment that the U.S. would not seek his removal from power.
The strike using cruise missiles was decisive but humane, minimal and handled carefully. Russia was warned beforehand so that its personnel would not be harmed. The administration even said it took measures to minimize harm to the Assad regime’s personnel. The objective was to destroy a base and deter Assad’s forces from using chemical weapons again, not to kill people—even those who committed the chemical attack.

NATIONAL POST – HUNGARY His university under siege, Michael Ignatieff is leading the charge against an increasingly autocratic Hungary
When Michael Ignatieff took the job as president and rector of Hungary’s Central European University last year, a press release at the time hinted that he would be facing “challenging times.”
And indeed, a mere 11 months later, the former Canadian Liberal leader is now leading a life or death struggle against the increasingly autocratic rule of Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban.
“This is going to be a long fight and a difficult one … but we simply cannot accept this legislation and we will resist it,” said Ignatieff in a video message to supporters earlier this month.
On Tuesday, the Hungarian parliament passed legislation that would effectively force CEU to close its doors.
Founded in 1991 by Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros, the university (accredited in both Hungary and the United States) was intended to help shepherd a formerly communist Hungary towards free institutions and liberal democracy.
Of course, this stands in noted opposition to Orban’s stated goal to turn Hungary into an “illiberal state” on the model of Turkey or Russia.
The Hungarian government also seems to have a particular dislike of all things Soros, and have referred to CEU as the “Soros university.”
In the early days of post-communist Hungary, Orban himself received a Soros-funded scholarship in 1989 to study at Oxford University. Orban spokesman Zoltán Kovács, one of the most visible defenders of the new law, similarly has a resume that features Soros scholarships and a CEU doctorate.
Nevertheless, the ruling Fidesz party vowed earlier this year to “sweep” out any organizations that received funding from the billionaire.
“The following year will be about the squeezing out of Soros and the powers that symbolize him,” Orban was quoted as telling Hungarian media in December.
The new Hungarian law has sparked public protests in Budapest, as well as official condemnation from Germany, the European Union and the U.S. State department, which defended CEU as a centre of “independent, critical thinking.”
In an April 5 statement, European Commission representative Carlos Moedas said the Hungarian law “may be in direct opposition to the freedom of scientific research, and our common values of openness.”
Hungarian authorities, meanwhile, have accused opponents of being the victim of “lies.”
When a spokesperson for German chancellor Angela Merkel denounced the Hungarian education bill on Wedneday, Orban spokesman Zoltán Kovács publicly expressed “regret that George Soros’s lies have also proved capable of deceiving the German government.”
The new law forces any foreign-registered university in Hungary to also have a branch in their home country.
The New York-registered CEU, notably, is the only Hungarian institution that would be in violation of the measure when it goes into force on January 1, 2018.
“As we see it, this is legislation targeted at one institution and one institution only,” wrote Ignatieff in a letter to supporters in late March.
Ignatieff was drawn to the CEU job in part because his wife, Zsuzsanna Zsohar, was born in Hungary. However, she was reportedly reluctant to return to the country having left it in 1970, when it was still a socialist state under the heel of the Soviet Union.
Ignatieff said in a Tuesday press conference that they intend to petition Hungarian president János Áder to veto the measure, which CEU maintains is in violation of the country’s constitution.
“We are going to behave as if Hungary is a liberal democratic state with constitutional review,” said Ignatieff on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ignatieff has been busy gathering support from fellow universities in what he has called a fight for the “freedom of academic institutions across Europe.”
Earlier this week, the rector was in Washington, DC to gather support from Senators, members of Congress and the U.S. State Department, who he suspected would express “incredulity” at the details of the new law.
Of particular interest to U.S. authorities is that the Hungarian law will require CEU to obtain permission from President Donald Trump and the U.S. federal government. This would potentially be in violation of the U.S. Constitution, which denotes education as a state-level responsibility.
“There may not be much love lost between the Trump administration and universities, but it is difficult to see how an avowedly ‘America First’ administration can ignore such a direct assault on an American institution,” wrote Ignatieff in a Sunday op-ed for the New York Times.

Russian warship steams toward US destroyers that launched Syria strikes
A Russian warship entered the eastern Mediterranean Friday and was heading toward the area where two U.S. Navy destroyers launched missile strikes into Syria, Fox News has learned.
The Russian frigate, Admiral Grigorovich RFS-494, crossed through the Bosphorus Strait “a few hours ago” from the Black Sea, according to a U.S. defense official.
The Russian warship is now in the eastern Mediterranean steaming in the direction of the U.S. warships.
The Admiral Grigorovich is armed with advanced Kalibr cruise missiles.
Also Friday, one of the American destroyers that launched the missiles into Syria started heading to an undisclosed location to rearm.

Germany Moves To Ban Child Marriages After Finding 1500 Cases Among Refugees
The German government agreed on a proposal Wednesday to outlaw child marriages after finding more than 1,500 cases of immigrant minors having adult spouses.
The Central Register of Foreign Nationals has documented a surge in child marriages in recent years. As of July 2016, 1,500 minors of non-German background were registered as married, including 361 under the age of 14.
The largest group of child brides, 664 minors, come from Syria followed by Afghanistan and Iraq.
“Children do not belong at the wedding altar, they belong in school,” Justice Minister Heiko Maas said Wednesday. “We cannot tolerate any marriages that might harm the natural development of minors.”
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet wants to annul all marriages where a participant was under the age of 16 at the time of the wedding. Courts would further have the power to nullify marriages involving a person between 16 and 18 years of age.
The current age of consent for all marriages is 16 in Germany. Since the country doesn’t recognize “religious marriages,” authorities can’t do anything to stop the practice from taking place in many cases. (RELATED: Germany Now Has More Than 1,000 Documented Child Marriages)
Schools across the country have warned that young girls frequently stop showing up to school after getting married.
“There are frequently cases where a girl, usually between 13 and 15 years of age, suddenly no longer come to school,” an anonymous teacher told newspaper Welt am Sonntag last August.

The National Security Council has presented President Trump with options to respond to North Korea’s nuclear program — including putting American nukes in South Korea or killing dictator Kim Jong-un, multiple top-ranking intelligence and military officials told NBC News.
Both scenarios are part of an accelerated review of North Korea policy prepared in advance of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.
The White House hopes the Chinese will do more to influence Pyongyang through diplomacy and enhanced sanctions. But if that fails, and North Korea continues its development of nuclear weapons, there are other options on the table that would significantly alter U.S. policy.

Haley forces Bolivia to defend Assad ‘atrocities’ in ‘public view’ at UN session
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley forced Bolivia to “defend the atrocities of the Syrian regime” in “full public view” on Friday, after the country’s ambassador requested a closed session to discuss President Trump’s strikes in Syria.
Trump ordered the missile strikes in response to a chemical weapons attack by Syrian President Bashar Assad Tuesday which killed dozens in northern Syria.
Haley revealed the Bolivian ambassador’s request for a private emergency session of the U.N. Security Council in a written statement Friday morning.
She countered: “The United States, as president of the Council this month, decided the session would be held in the open. Any country that chooses to defend the atrocities of the Syrian regime will have to do so in full public view, for all the world to hear.”
At the session, Haley stood by the U.S. actions, and said that when the international community fails to act, it is up to individual states to act themselves.

“U.S. allies expressed support on Friday for Washington’s missile strikes on Syria, calling them a proportionate response to Syrian forces’ suspected use of chemical weapons.

Turkey viewed the strikes positively and the international community should sustain its stance against the “barbarity” of the Syrian government, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said.
In an interview with Turkish broadcaster Fox TV, Kurtulmus said Assad’s government must be punished in the international arena and the peace process in Syria needed to be accelerated.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Russia and Iran needed to understand that supporting Assad made no sense and that the escalation of the U.S. military role in Syria was a “warning” to “a criminal regime”.
“Use of chemical weapons is appalling and should be punished because it is a war crime,” Ayrault told Reuters and France Info radio.
French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued statements saying Assad was solely to blame for the air strikes.
The Dutch government said: “The United States has given a clear signal that the use of poison gas crosses a line.” It also labeled the strikes a “proportionate” response.
“U.S. strikes show needed resolve against barbaric chemical attacks. EU will work with the US to end brutality in Syria,” the chairman of the council of EU leaders, Donald Tusk, said on Twitter.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the strikes sent “a vitally important message” that the world would not tolerate the use of chemical weapons.
“The retribution has been proportionate and it has been swift,” he told reporters in Sydney. “We support the United States in that swift action.”
Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which back rebels fighting Assad, said they supported the U.S. strikes and held only the Syrian government responsible for the attacks.
Other Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait, also expressed support for the attacks.
Some countries expressed reservations about the U.S. decision to launch strikes without authorization from the U.N. Security Council.
Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria. “At the same time, Indonesia is concerned with unilateral actions by any parties, including the use of Tomahawk missiles, in responding to the chemical weapon attack tragedy in Syria,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Armanatha Nasir said in a text message.
“Military actions, undertaken without prior authorization of the U.N. Security Council, are not in line with international legal principles in the peaceful settlement of disputes, as stipulated in the U.N. Charter.””
