  1. Paris police given powers to search Metro passengers’ bags after St Petersburg bombing (thelocal, Apr 5, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.fr/20170405/paris-police-to-search-bags-on-metro-after-st-petersburg-bombing

“Police in the French capital have been given new powers to search passengers’ bags on the city’s Metro and transport system if they have reason to be suspicious. The move has been taken after the bombing in St Petersburg this week.

Paris police boosted security on the city’s transport system in the light of Monday’s terror attack on the St Petersburg Metro system that left 14 dead and over 40 injured.

Some 140 extra gendarmes military police were deployed on the network, to reassure the capital’s commuters.

Another move taken by police chief Michel Cadot was to allow officers to search passengers’ bags if they have reason to be suspicious, whether its on Metro or RER lines, or in stations.

Cadot said the measure was taken at the request of the French government which had asked authorities in Paris to step up security measures.

Normally police must have a precise motivation or reason before they can search someone’s bags, usually related to a crime that had been committed.

But from now on the police can control and search whoever they want, without having to justify it.

Police say the measure is taken regularly and must be renewed every 24 hours for as long as the police want to impose it.

Paris has been on high alert for terror attacks since jihadist gunmen and bombers killed 130 people in November 2015.”

  2. Quarter of a million Syrians allowed to bring families to Germany: report (thelocal, Apr 5, 2017)
    https://www.thelocal.de/20170405/quarter-of-a-million-syrians-allowed-to-bring-families-to-germany-report

“Slightly over a quarter million Syrian refugees have permission to bring their families from the war-torn country to Germany, a report in Bild claims.

The report published on Tuesday is based on a leaked official document looking into the effects of the refugee influx on Germany.

It states that 268,000 Syrian refugees currently have the right to bring their families to Germany.

Asylum seekers who are given full refugee status have the right to bring their families to Germany immediately. The families must not make asylum requests and are not included in official asylum figures, Die Welt reports.

But many thousands more Syrians will not be able to bring their families to Germany, as the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has only offered them subsidiary status.

This lower-tier status only provides a temporary residence permit good for one year and subject to renewal, and bars the application for family members to be allowed entry to Germany until March 2018. The process itself can take another two years…”

  3. Moroccan girl ‘whipped by parents’ for acting too ‘Western’ (ansamed, Apr 5, 2017)

“A Milan children’s court on Wednesday temporarily removed a 14-year-old Moroccan girl from her family which had whipped her because she dressed and acted “too Western”.

The girl, whose family said they disciplined her because of unacceptable behaviour, was placed in a children’s home.

Her mother, father and brother are under investigation for mistreatment. “It’s an unfortunately ordinary story, like many we see, where there is a cultural factor, and a conflict between a girl born in Italy who wants to live like her friends and a traditionalist family that tries to impose her upbringing with physical and above all moral violence,” the court’s prosecutor, Ciro Cascone, told ANSA. “The religious factor is just an aspect of the cultural one,” he said.”
