“A HOST of EU countries are set to demand Poland and Hungary accept their quota of migrants or they will face being booted out of the crumbling bloc.
Both countries have ignored EU proposals to relocate 160,000 migrants and the rest of the bloc is set to take action to ensure they share the burden.
Poland has ignored criticism from the European Commission over its handling of the migrant crisis and last week Beata Szydlo, the country’s prime minister, criticised EU plans for a “two-speed” Europe which would allow more powerful members to develop faster than their poorer neighbours.
Meanwhile, Hungary has pushed back against the centralisation of powers in Brussels and eurosceptic leader Viktor Orban called for the country’s borders to be closed during the height of the 2015 migrant crisis.
The two countries will now have to decide if they are willing to maintain their anti-migrant rhetoric if it puts their EU membership under threat, a diplomatic source told the Times.
The source said: “They will have to make a choice: are they in the European system or not? You cannot blackmail the EU, unity has a price.”
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) is expected to look into the legality of the migrant quotas with a judgment, widely expected to be in favour of them, due before the end of the year.
The source added: “We are confident that the ECJ will confirm validation, then they [Poland and Hungary] must abide by the decision.
“If they don’t then they will face consequences, both financial and political.
“No more opt-outs, there is no more ‘one foot in and one foot out’.
“We are going to be very tough on this.”…”
I don’t think the threat will bother most Poles or Hungarians.

Fresh evidence the Russia ‘scandal’ is a Team Obama operation
Do you suspect that the noise over Trump-campaign contacts with the Russians is just a political hit arranged by Obama insiders before they left? You got fresh evidence of that Monday, with news that then-National Security Adviser Susan Rice was behind the “unmasking” of Trumpites in transcripts of calls with Russian officials.
Again, nothing on the public record so far shows that anyone on Team Trump said anything improper on those calls.
It’s no surprise that US spooks intercept foreign officials’ calls. But intelligence-community reports don’t disclose the names of US citizens on the other end. To get that info, a high official must (but rarely does) push to “unmask” the Americans’ names.
Bloomberg’s Eli Lake now reports that Rice started doing just that last year.
That was perfectly legal. But we also know that the Obama administration later changed the classification of the “unmasked” transcripts, and other similar material, in order to spread the information as widely as possible within the government.

U.S. withdraws funding for U.N. Population Fund
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The State Department said on Monday it was ending U.S. funding for the United Nations Population Fund, the international body’s agency focused on family planning as well as maternal and child health in more than 150 countries.
In a letter to U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, the State Department said it was dropping the funding because the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) “supports, or participates in the management of, a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.”
The cut marks U.S. President Donald Trump’s first move to curtail funding for the United Nations and is likely to raise further questions about how deep those cuts will eventually go throughout the organization, where the United States is the top donor.
It comes after Trump in January reinstated the so-called Mexico City Policy that withholds U.S. funding for international organizations that perform abortions or provide information about abortion.
Known by critics as the “global gag” rule, Trump broadened its scope to include all global health assistance in his Jan. 23 executive order that withholds at least half a billion dollars in U.S. funds. A lack of clarity around the rule, however, has left aid groups scrambling and both Republican and Democratic U.S. lawmakers seeking clarity.

Suspected gas attack on Syria’s rebel-held Idlib kills at least 58
BEIRUT (Reuters) – A suspected gas attack, believed to be by Syrian government jets, killed at least 58 people including 11 children under the age of eight in the northwestern province of Idlib on Tuesday, a war monitor and medical workers in the rebel-held area said.
A Syrian military source strongly denied the army had used any such weapons.
The attack caused many people to choke or faint, and some had foam coming out of their mouths, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing medical sources who described it as a sign of a gas attack.
The air strikes on the town of Khan Sheikhoun, in the south of rebel-held Idlib, also wounded more than 60 people, said the Observatory, a British-based war monitoring group.
“This morning, at 6:30 a.m., warplanes targeted Khan Sheikhoun with gases, believed to be sarin and chlorine,” said Mounzer Khalil, head of Idlib’s health authority, adding that the attack had killed more than 50 people and wounded 300.
“Most of the hospitals in Idlib province are now overflowing with wounded people,” he told a news conference in Idlib.

SYRIA – Turkey plans new ‘anti-terror’ offensives after Syria op: Erdogan
Istanbul (AFP) – Turkey is planning new offensives this spring against groups deemed terrorist organisations by Ankara, even after the completion of a half-year operation inside Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday.
Turkey announced last week that it had completed the Euphrates Shield operation in Syria, which began in August to expel Islamic State (IS) militants and Kurdish militia groups from the border area.
But Erdogan indicated that this by no means meant an end to cross-border operations by Ankara against IS and Kurdish groups classified by Turkey as terror groups, like the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
“The first stage, the Euphrates Shield operation… is over. But more will follow,” Erdogan said in a speech in the Trabzon region near the Black Sea ahead of the April 16 referendum on expanding his powers.
“There is no stopping, the road continues. We are making preparations for new operations in other regions for getting to the terrorists on their hills. We will give new names to the new operations,” he said.
Erdogan said IS, the PKK and also the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia, would face enduring “very nice surprises” from the spring.
The YPG is an ally of the United States in the fight against IS fighters in Syria, but is seen by Turkey as a terror group and the Syrian branch of the PKK.
“The next months with God’s permission will be spring for the Turkish nation and a black winter for the terrorists,” Erdogan added.
He did not specify where the new operations could take place.
Plans for a joint operation with the United States to capture the de facto IS capital of Raqa in Syria have floundered over Washington’s support for the involvement of the YPG.
Turkey meanwhile wants to shunt the YPG out of the strategic Syrian town of Manbij. There has also been repeated speculation of new action to defeat the PKK in its stronghold of northern Iraq.
Analysts have said that Turkey risks being sidelined as the war in Syria enters a new phase, with the United States working with the Kurdish fighters, and Russia also open to cooperation with the YPG.
The Euphrates Shield operation which began on August 24 saw Syrian opposition fighters backed by the Turkish army recapture towns including Jarabulus, Al-Rai, Dabiq and Al-Bab.

Hungary passes law that could drive out Soros-founded university
BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Hungary approved a new law in a fast-track procedure on Tuesday that could force a university founded by financier George Soros out of the country despite a protest against the plan in Budapest and condemnation abroad.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a staunch critic of liberal civil organizations funded by Soros, said on Friday the Central European University had violated regulations in awarding its diplomas, an allegation the college firmly rejected.
The law, which the government says is designed to address administrative shortcomings of foreign universities, marks the next chapter of a clampdown on independent institutions, which has seen Orban allies boost their influence over the judiciary, the media and the central bank.
Lawmakers passed the legislation with 123 votes in favor and 38 against, while 38 deputies did not vote. Voting was briefly interrupted by the sound of a siren blaring from a megaphone held up by an independent lawmaker in protest.
Addressing parliament before the vote, Orban’s human affairs minister said institutions backed by Soros were trying to undermine Hungary’s government by “averting democratic rules”.
“The organizations of George Soros operating in Hungary and around the world are just such pseudo-civilian agents and we are committed to stamping out such activity with all available legal means,” Zoltan Balog said.

This is now approaching the level of high comedy. Two the major broadcast networks that were so in the tank for the president when his name was Barack Obama have decided to play dumb in the era of Obama’s successor. Or maybe they’re not playing.
In their nightly broadcasts yesterday, ABC News and NBC News both chose not to report the story that broke mid-afternoon yesterday revealing that Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser, played a major role in the unmasking of members of the Trump team. CBS reported the story but slanted it in such a way as to excuse Rice’s actions and play down their seriousness.

Don’t get fixated on Susan Rice as the authority behind back-door surveillance of Trump
As everybody and his dog is reporting today, including LU contributor Onan Coca, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice has been fingered as having signed an “unmasking” request for NSA surveillance data on the Trump team. White House logs reportedly show that she did it.
This indeed implicates the White House in at least some of the surveillance of Trump during the Obama administration. That’s a big thing to verify.
But I want to caution you immediately that this will not be all there is to find, nor is it the most important thing to find out. We already have some key clues as to why that is so.
Susan Rice probably made an authorization for unmasking. But she wasn’t the only official who could do it. Others include John Brennan, former CIA director, and Loretta Lynch, former attorney general.
And we know from Adam Housley’s report on Fox News on Friday (video, for your convenience, below) that Devin Nunes ?

has been stonewalled by the intelligence agencies since January. We now have an accounting – such as it is (we can’t be certain it’s comprehensive) – of the White House logs. But according to Housley, we don’t have the same accounting from the CIA or ODNI. We don’t know what John Brennan did (or possibly James Clapper).
As for Loretta Lynch, I’ve been inclined all along to assume that this business didn’t go through the Justice Department. That doesn’t mean she had no knowledge at all that it was happening, but it’s unlikely her unmasking authority was used. (That said, I don’t entirely count DOJ participation out. Whatever unmasking was done would have used some flimsy pretext of national security justification. It presumably wasn’t terrorism, narcotics trafficking, or military defense, but fake pretexts invoking counterintelligence and finance may have been used, and DOJ could have been a player in either.)

Russia’s investigative committee has named the St Petersburg metro bomb attacker as Akbarzhon Jalilov, a 22-year-old man from the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.
The confirmation came after Kyrgyzstan’s security services, who said they are “maintaining contact with the Russian secret service for further investigation,” named Jalilov as a suspect this morning.
Earlier Russian investigators refused to confirm the report, saying that although they have established the identity of the attacker, whose remains they found at the scene of the blast, it would be “premature” to name the suspect publicly.
Who is he?
Akbarzhon Jalilov was born on April 1, 1995. Kyrgyzstan’s security services say he is from the city of Osh.
Unconfirmed reports in local media say he moved to St Petersburg with his parents in 2011, and remained in the city after they later returned to Osh.
Very little is known about Jalilov’s background before he carried out the attack.
Unconfirmed reports in Russian media said he worked for some years as a sushi chef in a St Petersburg restaurant and was a martial arts fan, citing a profile on Vkontakte, a Russian social network.
CCTV images of the suspect, provided by police to Russian television channels and redistributed by Reuters, show a young man in a red parka and carrying a rucksack walking through a metro station.
Where is he from?
Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous former Soviet republic sandwiched between Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and China, is a Muslim-majority country closely allied with Russia.
Jalilov is an Uzbek, not Kyrgyz name. Osh, the city the family comes from, was the scene of bloody clashes between Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities in 2010. Some have speculated the family moved to escape the violence, and might provide a clue to his path to radicalization.
Why did he do it?
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack and the suspect’s motives remain unclear.
Russia’s Interfax news agency cited law enforcement sources saying Jalilov was linked to known Islamist extremists – but it offered no details.
Like other former Soviet republics, including Russia, Kyrgyzstan has seen numbers of radicalized youth heading to Syria and Iraq to fight with Islamic State and other extremist groups.
Last year Kyrgyz authorities said up to 600 citizens had traveled to Iraq and Syria. Some have been used as suicide bombers there.

Worshippers at St. Petersburg’s newly opened Kolomyazhskaya mosque responded to Monday’s horrific bomb blast in the city’s metro network, which took the lives of 14 people and left 49 injured. Kyrgyzstan-born 22-year-old Akbarzhon Dzhalilov has been identified as the bomb suspect.
Karina, worshipper (Russian): “It was horrible. I was really close to the scene myself. If I would not have been late, I would have been in the exact same carriage. I was shaking. People walking out from there were not in their right mind.”

There have been no such acts for a very long time. People became unaccustomed to this. They didn’t expect this. That’s why yesterday’s events are particularly disturbing.”
St.Petersburg resident (Russian): “It might be painful to visit those places, but no, there is no fear. There is no fear among people. We were coming back yesterday, but we were taken off after these events. There was no panic. Only empathy and support. It was crowded in the transport [network], but there was no sign of irritation, that suprised me.”
Germany: Refugee housing ablaze in Weil der Stadt
At least six people were injured after a blaze tore through refugee accommodation in Weil der Stadt, in Baden-Wurttemberg, on Tuesday morning.
A total of 37 people were safely evacuated from the building, six of whom were injured, one was so severely that they had to be taken to hospital.
Nearly 100 rescue servicemen worked to stop the fire and then to ventilate the smoke.
The cause of the fire is yet unknown. Police have started investigations into the case.

At a rural town hall meeting in La Bazoche-Gouet, French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen criticised her globalist rival Emmanuel Macron for “insulting the people and France”. She promised her supporters they would “never get used to terrorism” saying she would bring “Islamist fundamentalism to its knees”.
Reaching out to what the Front National leader calls “forgotten France”, Le Pen spoke at a rally in an open-sided barn to nearly 1,000 people in the small Eure-et-Loir town, which has a population of just 1,200, on Monday.
“The other candidates are only in big cities,” she said whilst taking selfies with the eager members of the crowd. “I have been meeting in small villages and meeting French people who have never seen a candidate come to see them. It is my place, I am here among the French people who I want to defend.”

Focusing on rural affairs in her address, Le Pen also drove home her national agenda of neutrality, secularism, and security.

Promising to put ‘France First’, Le Pen affirmed: “With me at the head of the State, never will a stowaway be treated better than a Frenchman in his own country.”

Ms. Le Pen also criticised pro-mass migration En Marche candidate Macron, who during a speech in Marseilles Saturday attacked Ms. Le Pen, her party, and by inference, her supporters.
During a rally in the crime-plagued Mediterranean port city, where 30 to 40 per cent of the population are Muslim, Macron declared: “Let us drive away from this campaign, far from the country, the party of hatred, that of contempt, of the withdrawal, and all of those who make us so ashamed.”
Calling his words “contemptuous”, the Front National party leader said: “I can no longer bear to hear Mr. Macron say that you, you patriots, should be driven out of your own country.”
“We do not insult the people like that, Mr. Macron,” said Ms. Le Pen, to which the audience applauded and chanted: “We are at home.”
“How can Mr. Macron make such abject remarks towards the patriots and lovers of France that you are, that we are. He has insulted France by saying that she has committed a crime against humanity in Algeria.”
Le Pen was referencing comments made by Macron in February when he implied a collective national guilt for stating that French colonisation of Algeria was a “crime against humanity” – a comment that cost him five voter intention points in the days that followed.

Current polling suggests likely voter intention puts Marcon just 0.5 per cent ahead of Le Pen (26 per cent/25.5 per cent) for first round voting. Le Pen, who addressed young voters in Bordeaux on Sunday, is polling equal with Macron at 24 per cent with 18-24-year-olds.The first round of the presidential election occurs on 23 April, with the run-off set to take place on 7 May.

Hungary: Parliament passes legislation targeting Soros-backed university
The Hungarian Parliament approved an amendment to an existing higher education law which could force the George Soros-funded Central European University (CEU) to close, in Budapest, Tuesday.
As the vote was announced, the session was briefly interrupted by a loud siren. After the disruption the parliament passed the amendment, with 123 lawmakers backing the bill, 38 voting against it and another 38 abstaining from voting.
Reportedly the amendment will effectively force the CEU to change its name and oblige professors from non-EU countries to secure work permits. The CEU was founded in 1991.

BREITBART – ‘Impartial’ Channel 4 Airs Anti-Trump, ‘How Scared Should We Be?’ Film
British public-service broadcaster Channel 4 last night broadcast a film about the “Trumpian brave new world of ‘America first’”, claiming “we should all be worried”, because “with nuclear weapons at play, it may decide the future of the entire world”.
“The first ten weeks of the Trump presidency have witnessed a descent into chaos and confusion,” says transgendered presenter Abi Austen in the opening line of the film, called President Trump: How Scared Should We Be?
Immediately, President Donald J. Trump is accused of being “ignorant and erratic” during the campaign and making “blood-curdling pledges to the American people”.
On America’s nuclear capability, the host said: “This awesome power is now wielded by a former game show host with no political experience and no knowledge of international diplomacy.”
The film recognises that Mr. Trump’s approval ratings amongst those who voted for him remain strong, but then systematically attacks him for attempting to implement election pledges.
The programme features a host of “experts” and former government advisers raising speculative concerns. Carlos Diaz-Rosillo, a director of policy for Mr. Trump, is briefly allowed to defend his administration. No extra time is given to optimistic, third-party, pro-Trump voices and opinions.
Channel 4 claims all of its news programmes are “presented with due impartiality” as required by UK law.
The implication that Mr. Trump’s presidency risks nuclear war appears to be based on the fact that some people in his administration are proudly on the political right, and the power of bureaucrats could be reduced and some checks and balances removed as the president seeks to streamline big government.
Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, stands accused of harbouring “far-right, ultra-nationalist views” by one interviewee. They offered no platform for anyone to push back against this outrageous claim.
The presenter says Mr. Bannon is “a man who inspires fear and mockery”, describing him as a “deeply religious Roman Catholic” who “sees America as engaged in an epic struggle for survival with what he calls ‘Islamic Fascism’”.
As evidence of the alleged threat of nuclear war, the programme highlights a story about the U.S. President allegedly allowing a security agent with access to nuclear codes to pose for a selfie in a public place.
As the programme continues to attack Mr. Trump for “aggressively” confronting terror, it simultaneously criticises him for adopting a more isolationist stance and allegedly backing off from “policing the world” and engaging in large-scale foreign military interventions.
“Trump speaks to the most primal emotions of Americans – and that is fear,” claims Tom Countryman, a career diplomat in the Barack Obama administration. “And as a consequence, he seems to view the United States’s role in the world not as a leader, but as a victim.”
Max Boot, a long-standing anti-Trump voice, adds: “You [want to] wall the United States off from the rest of the world. This is very dismaying to see these people who are really marginal political figures suddenly being put in the centre of policy making in this White House.”
Later, Mr. Countryman claimed those around Mr. Trump believe “alpha males have returned to the White House” which is “a theory that works very well amongst a gang of chimpanzees, and not among democratic citizens”.
“It’s an indication about a predisposition by this White House to resort more readily to military force than previous administrations have,” he adds, seemingly referring to a recent raid in Yemen.
On Russia, Mr. Trump is criticised for reaching out to Vladimir Putin, but also for risking war in Eastern Europe as he might “fall out” with the Russian president.
Mr. Boot says: “…there is a real danger that [Mr. Trump] will wind up taking us into a conflict that we did not intend.”
“There is no indication that Mr. Trump has made any effort to understand [the destructive power of nuclear weapons] in the same depth every other American president has,” adds Mr. Countryman.
“Never before has America had a Commander-in-Chief whose temperament has been so widely questioned,” concludes the presenter. “We should all be worried.”

The new data released by Italy’s National Institute for Statistics for 2016 sounds again like a death knell. There has been a new negative record of births: 474,000 compared to 486,000 for 2015, which had already fallen to historic lows. There were 608,000 deaths in 2016. In one year, Italy lost 134,000 people — the equivalent of a city of the size of Ferrara or Salerno.
The demographic “illusion” is kept only by the influx of immigration (135,000). If one needs an idea of what Italy would be without immigrants, look at Emilia-Romagna, one of Italy’s most populated and affluent regions: in 2035 it will have 20% fewer residents.
Italy is sometimes thought of Europe’s guinea pig: wherever Italy goes, much of Europe follows it, especially in the central and southern countries. In 1995, Antonio Golini, a professor at La Sapienza University and a former president of the National Institute of Statistics, was contacted by the director-general of Plasmon, Italy’s largest producer of baby food. Looking at the declining birth rates, the firm asked him if something could be done to prevent the company from going out of business. Plasmon started to make dietary products for adults.
A year ago, European geographers went in search of “the most desolate place in Europe”. They discovered it not in northern and cold Lapland, but in sunny Spain, specifically in the area of Molina de Aragon, two hours from Madrid. Depopulation has not been the consequence of the climate, as in the Russian steppe or northern forests, but of a demographic crisis.
A report by the National Statistical Institute of Spain explained how the Iberian peninsula has become the sick man of Europe: Spain loses 72 inhabitants every day; 20% fewer children are born there than two decades ago. Demographers draw a line where Spain has no future and 30% of the population will be over the age of 65. In some Spanish regions, the fertility rate barely reaches one child per woman. Deaths already exceed births. Even the newspaper El Pais asked, “Are the Spanish people in danger of extinction?”. The Spanish government just appointed a “sex czar” to try to figure out how to sustain the shrinking population.
