    They keep pushing this to allegedly show Russian connection between the Trump team and the Russians.

    But Robby Mook still doesn’t get the problem. It doesn’t matter if the taps may have been legal if they were tapping the Russians.

    The question is were they using the excuse of Russians to spy on the Trump campaign.

    Not to mention that there was an actual tap on the conversations between Trump and the Presidents of Australia and Mexico. Where were the Russians then?

    The information about the alleged ‘tap’ on the server, the Trump aides and the phone conversations with world leaders were all illegally leaked with the specific purpose of trying to undermine the Trump campaign.

    North Korea could soon have the capacity to launch an attack on Hawaii that would devastate America’s Pacific military bases, accelerating the need for the United States to upgrade missile defenses in the area.

    The United States today relies on ground-based ballistic missile interceptors deployed in California and Alaska to protect Hawaii, but these defenses would do little to guard U.S. territory in the Pacific against a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which officials believe is nearing completion.

    The U.S. Missile Defense Agency in February test fired a new SM-3 Block IIA missile from Hawaii that successfully intercepted an incoming ballistic missile, but the Pentagon does not maintain a permanent missile defense installation or detection capabilities on the Hawaiian Islands.

      TOKYO (Reuters) – Rattled by North Korean military advances, influential Japanese lawmakers are pushing harder for Japan to develop the ability to strike preemptively at the missile facilities of its nuclear-armed neighbor.

      Japan has so far avoided taking the controversial and costly step of acquiring bombers or weapons such as cruise missiles with enough range to strike other countries, relying instead on its U.S. ally to take the fight to its enemies.

      But the growing threat posed by Pyongyang, including Monday’s simultaneous launch of four rockets, is adding weight to an argument that aiming for the archer rather than his arrows is a more effective defense.

      “If bombers attacked us or warships bombarded us, we would fire back. Striking a country lobbing missiles at us is no different,” said Itsunori Onodera, a former defense minister who heads a ruling Liberal Democratic Party committee looking at how Japan can defend against the North Korean missile threat. “Technology has advanced and the nature of conflict has changed.”

    Beijing (AFP) – China warned Wednesday that North Korea and the United States were like two trains racing towards a “head-on collision,” calling on both sides to apply the brakes and avert a security crisis.

    Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s warning came after a cascade of events that has sent regional tensions soaring, including provocative North Korean missile tests and annual US-South Korean wargames that infuriate Pyongyang.

    Beijing itself is particularly concerned over an American missile-defence system being rolled out in South Korea as a shield against the North Korean threat, but which Wang said also “undermines China’s strategic security.”

    He called on North Korea to suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the US and South Korea halting the military exercises.

    “The two sides are like two accelerating trains coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way,” Wang said at a press conference on the sidelines of China’s annual parliament session.

    Richard: China and North Korea are testing President Trump to see if they can bluff them. I don’t think that he will bluff, instead he may raise them bu supporting the Japanese who are wanting to change their laws and Constitution so they can make a first strike against North Korea. I doubt if there are enough votes in Japan to get the change but President Trump supporting the idea will show he isn’t afraid of North Korea or China.

    From the headline, you might expect that students at George Washington University in Washington opted to uphold their principles even if it meant suspending demonstrations against the Trump administration. What the GW Coalition for Intersectional Justice refused to agree to, however, was the addition of a non-violence clause in its mission statement.

    According to Campus Reform, the coalition of some 25 student organizations dedicated to resisting the policies of Donald Trump “splintered … over the question of whether to mandate nonviolence or condone behaviors like flag burning and practicing ‘self-defense’ in potential altercations with Trump supporters.”

    The non-violence clause was proposed by a member of the Mexican Students Association, who said his group had joined the coalition to “convey disagreement on how the new administration was going to act towards undocumented individuals,” but feared that violent behavior would create negative perceptions of the movement.

    “We didn’t want this protest to be either violent or misconstrued to be violent,” Jesus Montes, director of communications for the MSA, explained to the [student newspaper] the Hatchet. “We didn’t want our organization or GW to be defaced if something were to happen.”

    • This says a lot about the protesters, they plan on being violent. Peaceful protests are not part of their plan. The violence at the Berkley protests with the Trump supporters fighting back shows just how close to a nasty civil war the US is, a war Obama has been working of since he was first elected.

  11. NYT – Does Times Reporting Support Donald Trump’s Wiretap Claim?

    President Trump has a predisposition toward self-inflicted wounds. He proved so once again last Saturday when he claimed he was wiretapped by former President Barack Obama, whom Trump called a sick guy for conducting an illegal Watergate-style operation.

    How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

    There is no evidence that what Trump said is true, and a line of prominent officials, most notably the former director of national intelligence James Clapper, have stepped forward to say so. Both Democrats and Republicans have spoken up to express their displeasure.

    This has been the main story line over the past few days: Feckless president makes baseless claim; establishment Washington revolts. Media piles on.

    What’s missing is that Trump’s assertions, however overinflated, nonetheless echo certain aspects of The New York Times’s reporting from recent weeks. That, in turn, has allowed his administration to assert that the basis for his claims rests, in part, on reporting by The Times.

    On the surface, there are similarities. Both The Times and Trump have referred to wiretaps. Both have referenced White House knowledge of the investigations. And both have described efforts by officials from the Obama administration to involve itself in the continuing investigations of Trump and Russia.

    Yet there are also significant differences. For one, as The Times (and others) has made clear, these investigations have been conducted by the F.B.I., intelligence agencies and Congress, not by Obama himself. 🙂 🙂 🙂 The Times has also said Obama administration officials sought to spread intelligence about a possible link between Trump and Russia to ensure a trail of evidence for investigators, but it said Obama himself was not involved. And no Times reporter has claimed that any warrants have been issued to spy on Trump or his associates.

    Distinguishing between Trump’s assertions and The Times’s reporting is essential. Yet readers at this juncture may be understandably confused</strong 🙂 🙂 🙂 on what is true and not in one of the most important ongoing news stories in the country.

    Several readers have written in this week saying they’re having a hard time squaring The Times’s own past reports of wiretapping with the paper’s assertions that there is no firm evidence that any warrants for wiretaps have been issued. Readers also expressed confusion with The Times’s assertion that it would be illegal for a White House to receive information about such investigations, when its own wiretapping story in January said the Trump White House was given some information from intercepted communications.

    “For months now the NY Times and many other mainstream news sources has been running stories based on anonymous leaks saying that a massive investigation was going on into Trump and company’s Russian dealings based on wiretaps and intel intercepts,” wrote John Penley of Asheville, N.C. “Now Obama officials are saying this all never happened so my question is this: Why have the NY Times and others been saying it has for months now basing their stories on anonymous leaks?”

    I reached out to editors in the Washington bureau to seek their help in clarifying the difference between Clapper’s — and The Times’s — assertions that no warrants had been issued, and the reference to wiretapping in the January story.

    Elisabeth Bumiller, the bureau chief, said the January story was referring to information picked up from wiretaps and other intelligence collected overseas, a process that requires no warrants.

    There’s a lot to parse. And doing so, in a way that is clear to readers, is not easy when the subject matter is complicated and the information that reporters receive comes under strict terms of how it can be used. One reporter, Charlie Savage, produced a helpful Q. and A. explaining the law around wiretaps and key terms. But it didn’t try to show how Trump’s claims line up against The Times’s past reporting.

    Hoping to take advantage of the circumstances, not only the White House but several conservative media outlets are now trying to assert that The Times’s reporting is proof that Trump is right in his claims. That is a bold exaggeration, but it is made more possible by a shortage of clear and complete information on The Times’s part. Better if The Times helps readers understand this crucial story than let others, with flagrant political motives, do so.

    “The antiquities museum in the Iraqi city of Mosul is in ruins. Piles of rubble fill exhibition halls and a massive fire in the building’s basement has reduced hundreds of rare books and manuscripts to ankle-deep drifts of ash.

    Associated Press reporters were granted rare access to the museum on Wednesday after Iraqi forces retook it from the Islamic State group the day before.

    After examining AP photographs of the destruction, two Iraqi archeologists confirmed that many of the artifacts destroyed by IS were the original ancient stone statues dating back thousands of years, rather than replicas as some Iraqi officials and experts previously claimed.

    IS captured Mosul in 2014 and released a video the following year showing fighters smashing artifacts in the museum with sledgehammers and power tools. The voice narrating the IS video justified the acts with verses from the Quran referencing the prophet Mohammed’s destruction of idols in the Kaaba.

    “A rally in Rotterdam to seek support for a “yes” vote in a Turkish referendum on constitutional reform that would give President Recep Tayyip Erdogan more power was canceled Wednesday, amid security concerns.

    Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb wrote in a letter to city aldermen that the owner of a hall in the city that was to have hosted the meeting had canceled. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had planned to address the rally.

    Aboutaleb added that even if the venue had not pulled the plug on the meeting that he likely would have banned it “because of the risk to public order and security.”

    Tensions have been high in Rotterdam’s Turkish community since last year’s failed coup aimed at toppling Erdogan.

    Earlier Wednesday, anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders said that Cavusoglu was not welcome in the Netherlands.

    Amid tight security, Wilders held a brief demonstration Wednesday outside Turkey’s embassy in The Hague to protest the planned rally featuring the minister.

    Standing in front of a banner saying: “Stay Away! This is our country,” Wilders called Erdogan a “dictator” and said, “We will not help strengthen a dictatorship.”

    The demonstration came the morning after Cavusoglu addressed a rally in the German city of Hamburg and a week before Dutch elections in which Wilders is forecast to make strong gains.

    It was not immediately clear if Cavusoglu, who was in neighboring Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday, would seek to hold a rally somewhere else in the Netherlands.

    The Dutch government has called such a rally “undesirable.””

    “The heavily migrant-populated Swedish city of Malmö has grown by almost 6,000 people in the last year and authorities say the main reason for the growth is mass migration.

    Five years ago the population of Malmö in southern Sweden passed the 300,000 mark and today hovers around 320,000. In the last year, the number increased by 6,000 and authorities say the driving force behind the increase is mass migration, predominantly from Middle Eastern nations, Sydsvenskan reports.

    5,920 individuals settled in Malmö last year and according to the statistics around 3,892 of these people were immigrants from either Iraq or Syria.

    In addition to the new arrivals, the city also experienced significant emigration. Around 1,510 Danes moved away from Malmö in 2016 while only 1,040 arrived in the city, shrinking the total number of Danes living in the city which is just across the border from Denmark.

    Besides immigration, the rest of the population increase was made up by a so-called baby boom in the city. 5,120 children were born in Malmö in 2016 while some 2,471 people passed away.

    The investigation of Russian interference in the US election could turn into a big headache for the Democrats. The phrase “Be careful what you ask for” comes to mind.

    For months before the presidential election, I explained why the Democrats were making a big mistake by picking Hillary Clinton as their candidate. And I correctly predicted that she would lose.

    The Democrats didn’t listen, and now their party is in shambles. They aren’t going to listen to me now either about the unintended consequences of an investigation of the Russians, but I’m going to explain anyway.

  24. Canada’s New Blasphemy Laws

    A resolution, M-103, seeking to condemn so-called “Islamophobia,” was introduced a few weeks ago in the peaceful country of Canada by Liberal Party MP Iqra Khalid in the House of Commons, sparking a controversy.

    A similar motion, labelled M-37, was later tabled in the Ontario provincial legislature by MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers on February 23, 2017, and was passed by the provincial parliament.

    M-37, like its predecessor, demanded that lawmakers condemn “all forms of Islamophobia” and reaffirm “support for government efforts, through the Anti-Racism Directorate, to address and prevent systemic racism across government policy, programs and services”.

    Although these motions are not legally binding, extremists have already started demanding them as laws.

    There are, of course, no comparable motions against “Judeophobia” or “Christianophobia”.

    Neither motion M-103 nor motion 37 exactly define “Islamophobia,” leaving that to the imagination of the supposed victim(s).

    Hardliners who support this form of censorship, and presumably other restrictions required by Islamic sharia law, aim to blur the line between genuine bigotry and criticism of core problems across the Muslim world, such as the murder of apostates and homosexuals, communal hatred, anti-Semitism, violence against women and minors, female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, unequal legal and inheritance rights for women, stoning, flogging and amputation, and social taboos such as honour killings or right to choose a husband for girls or restrict girls’ education.

  33. French Police Detain 50 Youths for Stoning Police Cars In Riot-Hit Neighbourhood

    PARIS (AP) — The prosecutor’s office for the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis said that some 50 young people have been detained for allegedly throwing stones at police cars, setting fires and lobbing smoke bombs into a school.

    Police rounded up the youths on Tuesday morning and were questioning them.

    The prosecutor’s office says investigators must ascertain whether each of those arrested was involved in the unrest, which began at the school. The group can be held for 24 hours.

    The prosecutor’s office says it is unusual to detain such a large number of suspects at once. There was no clear information about a possible motive.

    One hypothesis linked the turmoil to ongoing outrage over the Feb. 2 assault of a young man who was allegedly raped with a police baton.

    FOX News – Marines arrive in Syria in support of fight for Raqqa, defense official says

    A detachment of U.S Marines arrived in Syria outside the ISIS de-facto capital of Raqqa, a U.S. defense official confirmed Wednesday to Fox News.

    The Pentagon is not publically confirming the move, citing operational security.

    The recent deployment is expected to be discussed Thursday when the head of U.S. Central Command, Gen. Joe Votel, the top U.S. general responsible for American forces in the Middle East, appears before Congress to testify on the ISIS fight.

    Votel had hinted that more troops would be headed to Syria along with artillary when he spoke to reporters while traveling in the region late last month.

    The U.S. is authorized to have up to 500 troops in Syria. Before the Marines arrived, roughly 300 U.S. special operations personnel were supporting local Syrian forces there.

    NYT – ISIS Leaders Are Fleeing Raqqa, U.S. Military Says

    WASHINGTON — As Syrian fighters backed by the United States close in on Raqqa, some of the Islamic State’s leaders have fled their self-declared capital and are planning to carry on the fight from other sanctuaries in Syria and Iraq, an American defense official said on Wednesday.

    The departure of some of the group’s leadership does not mean that the battle to take Raqqa will be easy, the official said. An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 fighters remain in the city.

    To provide more firepower for the looming battle, a United States Marine artillery unit is being deployed in Syria, mimicking the approach the United States has taken to support Iraqi troops fighting to reclaim Mosul from the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

    But the flight of some Islamic State leaders indicates that their loss of Raqqa would not signal the end of their struggle to preserve their pseudo-state. The group’s fighters are expected to fight on in Deir al-Zour, a Syrian province south of Raqqa, and in Iraqi towns along the Euphrates River, as well as to try to administer their self-proclaimed caliphate from those places.

    A detailed assessment of Islamic State fighting capabilities was provided by the American defense official, who could not be identified under the ground rules for the Pentagon briefing.

    The overall picture the official painted of the Islamic State was of an organization losing significant amounts of territory but still determined to fight. All told, the militant group is estimated to have at least 15,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria, although its flow of volunteers has shrunk to 100 a month or even fewer.

    No more than 2,500 fighters are struggling to defend western Mosul and the nearby town of Tal Afar, where they are largely cut off by Iraqi forces from receiving supplies and reinforcements. Those fighters have used crude chemical weapons, including chlorine and low-grade sulfur mustard. But while the weapons have hurt civilians, American officials do not believe that they have been militarily effective.

    The American-led command has concentrated on striking midlevel commanders to try to sow confusion in the Islamic State’s ranks. The official said the group had lost 65 percent of the terrain that it controlled in Syria and Iraq at its peak.

    Still, the official acknowledged, the Islamic State has the resources to carry on, including an abundant supply of weapons and cash that it stole from the Iraqi and Syrian authorities when the militant group swept across the countries in 2014. The resilience of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group’s leader, may also be a rallying factor. The American defense official said he was believed to be alive and to have left Mosul.

    American officials appear confident that the Islamic State will be evicted from Iraq’s major cities and towns within six months. One militant stronghold that the Iraqi government has yet to focus on is Hawija, west of Kirkuk. Iraqi troops bypassed the town, where the defense official said the Islamic State has as many as 1,000 fighters, in the rush to reach Mosul. In October, the militant group used the Hawija area as a springboard for a counterattack on Kirkuk, which was put down after a couple of days of bitter fighting.

    The Islamic State has suffered the loss of Al Bab in northern Syria, which fell to Turkish forces and Turkish-backed Syrian militias on Feb. 23. The militants had used the town as a command center and relied on the network of roads there to distribute fighters and supplies.

    Within the past week, Palmyra has also been recaptured by the Syrian government, with the help of Russian air power.

    But the Islamic State is expected to fight hard in Raqqa, where it has fortified its positions with trenches, tunnels, minefields and houses rigged with explosives.

    Raqqa, however, is not the whole story. Thousands of militants are still operating southwest of the city in oil-rich Deir al-Zour, and along the Euphrates in Iraq. The Syrian towns Mayadeen and Abu Kamal are still Islamic State strongholds, as is Qaim across the border in Iraq.

    Far from abandoning their dream of a caliphate, Islamic State leaders appear to be making arrangements so that if Raqqa falls, some administrative functions can continue to be carried out in their remaining territory, which the group controls with an iron fist.

    The Trump administration has yet to make clear whether it will arm Syrian Kurds for the fight to take Raqqa. Turkey objects to the prospect of assisting the Kurdish minority that straddles the border between the two countries. Another crucial decision is which Syrian groups will govern and secure the city once it is retaken.

    One thing is clear, however. Retaking Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, would be a body blow to the Islamic State. And capturing Raqqa, a powerful symbol of its power, would be an enormous setback for the group. But more fighting would lie beyond, and the United States and its coalition will need a plan to deal with that.
