“A FORMER US soldier has been charged with attempting to help would-be jihadis plot an ISIS-inspired attack.

Robert Lorenzo Hester Jr was caught as part of a covert FBI operation who developed a fake plan to target Kansas City, according to criminal complaints.

Missouri-born Hester allegedly told undercover officials he was “down” with the plan to hit the city.

US Attorney Tammy Dickinson said: “First on social media, then during face-to-face meetings with an undercover FBI employee, this defendant repeatedly expressed his intent to engage in acts of violent jihad against the United States.”…”

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/770405/Sweden-train-attack-liquid-thrown-passengers-breathing-problems

“TRAIN passengers were left with breathing problems in Sweden tonight after a masked man threw liquid on them as the carriage doors slammed shut – trapping them inside.

The attack happened on a subway train at Sankt Eriksplan station in Stockholm, where emergency services rushed to the scene.

One passenger onboard said commuters were left in a state of panic, most suffering from breathing problems and others desperately rushing for the exits.

Reports initially stated the man threw a rucksack into the carriage, but Swedish police have confirmed it was a noxious liquid instead – the motives behind the incident or the identity of the man involved are not yet known…”

“Mysterious radioactive spikes are being found across Europe – and nobody quite knows why.

Iodine-131, a man-made radioactive material, is being found in small amounts across the continent. It was found in northern Norway early in January, according to officials, but has been gradually moving across the rest of Europe ever since.

But despite finding the material in January, authorities didn’t announce that it had been found until recent days. That might be because it isn’t at all clear where it has come from or how it got to be spread out.

Further information makes the find even more unusual. Iodine-131 is usually found alongside other radioactive materials, but it wasn’t…”

    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/2/22/canada-to-welcome-1-200-vulnerable-yazidi-refugees-from-iraq

“Canada vowed to resettle 1,200 Yazidi refugees who faced persecution by the Islamic State group, the immigration minister said on Tuesday.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen confirmed Canada’s latest plans to welcome the “highly vulnerable” group of survivors, adding that some 400 had already been airlifted to the country.

“Our operation is under way and individual survivors of Daesh have been arriving in Canada for resettlement in the last number of months and this began on October 25, 2016,” said Hussen, using an Arabic name for the Islamic State.

“Our government will resettle approximately 1,200 highly vulnerable survivors of Daesh and their family members in Canada,” he added.

The initiative follows parliament’s resolution last autumn to take in Yazidis facing “genocide” in Iraq at the hands of the militant IS group.

The original aim was to bring over women and girls at risk, but Hussen told a news conference that Ottawa had learned that “Daesh has also deliberately targeted boys and as such we are helping to resettle all child survivors of Daesh.”

Hussen said the migrants are arriving on commercial flights at a “controlled pace” to prevent the Can$28 million (US$21 million) operation from overwhelming Canada’s refugee system…”

  7. https://gatestone.eu/gang-rape-trial-vienna/

In Austria, this Tuesday a court case will start against 9 Iraqi men for drugging, kidnapping, and gang raping a female tourist from Germany nearly 14 months ago in the capital of Vienna. The attack, during New Year’s Eve of 2015, was aimed at Julia S., a 29-year-old teacher who had come to visit her friend Mechthild H., 28, who lived in the Austrian city. Together, they were going to celebrate the New Year.

The women headed into town for drinks and, after becoming slightly tipsy, decided to visit a restaurant because they “felt cold,” Julia tells Kronen Zeitung. She was soon joined at her table in the diner by a group of men that started serving her vodka. Via the drinks, the later victim was possibly drugged.

  9. Is James O’Keefe About To Smoke CNN? Tells Hannity He’s Set To Release “Hundreds of Hours” Of Newsroom Footage “Wikileaks Style”

James O’Keefe of Project Veritas is set to unleash holy hell Thursday on #FakeNews network CNN. Well, he didn’t exactly say it was CNN, but it was heavily implied. Apparently the network has a mole…

O’Keefe is known for undercover sting operations which have led to such bombshells as the DNC’s paid agitator network, the outing of “DisruptJ20” / Antifa organizers which took place at comet ping pong – and netted three arrests (including a suspected pedophile), and most recently New Hampshire election fraud.

Today O’Keefe was interviewed on Sean Hannity’s radio show where he revealed that a major network has been “stung”

O’Keefe: In the next 48 hours, Project Veritas, like Wikileaks, will be releasing hundreds of hours of tape from within the establishment media. Our next target is in fact, the media.

Hannity: How long have you been working on this?

O’Keefe: We’ve had people on the inside come to us. Just like Julian Assange has people come to him, we’ve had people, sources come to us and give us information, and we’re going to be releasing it “Wikileaks Style” this week.

    Moments later:

Hannity: Can you give us a hint what organizations are going to be impacted by this?

O’Keefe: It’s one that Trump has really been talking about, you can probably use your imagination.

    Hannity: So, it’s CNN…

  10. Iran ready to give U.S. ‘slap in the face’: commander

DUBAI (Reuters) – The United States should expect a “strong slap in the face” if it underestimates Iran’s defensive capabilities, a commander of the elite Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday, as Tehran concluded war games.

Since taking office last month, U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to get tough with Iran, warning the Islamic Republic after its ballistic missile test on Jan. 29 that it was playing with fire and all U.S. options were on the table.

  11. Le Pen Wins Over Women Voters Who Feel Left Behind in France

French women are starting to picture their next president as a divorced mother of three.

The anti-euro, anti-immigrant candidate Marine Le Pen has been playing up her gender as she seeks to convert a likely first-round victory into an overall majority in the run-off on May 7 — and it’s paying off. The 48-year-old National Front leader has already rallied some 2 million additional female voters to her cause since her last run for president in 2012 and she’s betting more will follow.

“Women are the key,” said Nonna Meyer, a researcher at the Sciences Po institute in Paris who has studied the National Front for 25 years. “These women often abstain and now they are backing Le Pen to protect their jobs and their security.”

  12. Germany: Ex-Iraqi soldier goes on trial over photo with severed heads of IS militants

A former Iraqi soldier went on trial in Berlin on Wednesday, over allegations he had posed for a photo with the severed heads of two militants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State

Federal prosecutors said earlier that the incident occurred when 28-year-old Rami K., whose last name has not been disclosed in accordance with German privacy laws, was serving in the Iraqi military during 2015. The suspect reportedly took part in fighting in the city of Tikrit, northwest of Baghdad, when the photo was allegedly taken and later posted on a social network.

SOT, Lisa Jani, spokesperson of Berlin Criminal Court (German): “The defendant is charged with having shown and postured with the severed heads of opposing combatants to a camera while he was an officer of the Iraqi forces, in order to disparage the honour of those who had been killed. If the accusation turns out to be established, this will be considered a war crime against people in two cases. The law in this case provides a prison term from one to 15 years.”

  13. Planes, tanks, ships: Russian military gets massive upgrade

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military received a sweeping array of new weapons last year, including 41 intercontinental ballistic missiles, and the wide-ranging military modernization will continue this year, the defense minister said Wednesday.

Minister Sergei Shoigu told lawmakers the air force will receive 170 new aircraft, the army will receive 905 tanks and other armored vehicles while the navy will receive 17 new ships this year.

Amid tensions with the West, the Kremlin has continued to spend big on new weapons despite Russia’s economic downturn.

Also this year, three regiments of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces will receive new intercontinental ballistic missiles, Shoigu said. Each regiment has up to 10 launchers.

The rising number of new weapons has raised demands for new personnel. Shoigu said the military currently needs 1,300 more pilots and will recruit them by 2018.

A severe money crunch after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union left the military in tatters, with most of its planes grounded and ships left rusting at harbor for lack of funds. As part of President Vladimir Putin’s military reforms, the armed forces have received new weapons and now engage in regular large-scale drills.

Russia has used its revived military capability in Syria, where it has launched an air campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad and used the conflict to test its new weapons for the first time in combat.

Exclusive: China finishing South China Sea buildings that could house missiles – U.S. officials

China, in an early test of U.S. President Donald Trump, has nearly finished building almost two dozen structures on artificial islands in the South China Sea that appear designed to house long-range surface-to-air missiles, two U.S. officials told Reuters.

The development is likely to raise questions about whether and how the United States will respond, given its vows to take a tough line on China in the South China Sea.

China claims almost all the waters, which carry a third of the world’s maritime traffic. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims. Trump’s administration has called China’s island building in the South China Sea illegal.

  15. Mexicans weigh the daunting prospect of deportee camps

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexicans fear deportee and refugee camps could be popping up along their northern border under the Trump administration’s plan to start deporting to Mexico all Latin Americans and others who entered the U.S. illegally through this country.

Previous U.S. policy called for only Mexican citizens to be sent to Mexico. Migrants known as “OTMs” — Other Than Mexicans — got flown back to their homelands.

Now, under a sweeping rewrite of enforcement policies announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, migrants might be dumped over the border into a violence-plagued land where they have no ties while their asylum claims or deportation proceedings are heard in the United States. U.S. officials didn’t say what Mexico would be expected to do with them.

  16. Possible mole in security detail of Dutch frontrunner Wilders

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A Dutch secret service agent who was part of the team responsible for protecting Geert Wilders, the frontrunner in next month’s election, has been suspended on suspicion of leaking details to a criminal organization, the secret service said on Wednesday.

Wilders, who campaigns on an anti-Islam platform that includes closing mosques and banning immigration from Muslim countries that has led to the protection, condemned the alleged breach, saying he cannot function without adequate security.

Dutch newspapers De Telegraaf and NRC Handelsblad and the country’s national broadcaster NOS identified the suspect as an experienced officer in his mid-30s, using his first name and last initial.

Secret Service chief Erik Akerboom said he could not confirm the man’s identity but confirmed media reports he has a “Moroccan background”.

Akerboom told Business News Radio that “as far as we know” Wilders’ safety had not been jeopardized.

Wilders has frequently railed against rogue elements within the Netherlands’ Moroccan community and pledged to crack down on “Moroccan scum” who he said were making the streets unsafe as he launched his campaign on Saturday for the March 15 vote.

  18. Jews Under Assault in Europe

    by Robbie Travers
    February 22, 2017 at 4:00 am

    https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/9882/jews-attacks-europe

Antonio Tajani, the new President of the European Parliament, has made a bold opening statement of intent: “No Jew should be forced to leave Europe.” While this is an admirable position to hold, it sadly could not be farther from the truth. The poison of anti-Semitism festers in Europe once again.

Europe is seeing yet again another rise in the number of Jews leaving the continent. Jonathan Boyd, Executive Director of the Institute of Jewish Policy Research (IJPR), notes that the number of Jews leaving France is “unprecedented”

The results of the study show that 4% of the French and Belgian Jewish populations had emigrated those countries to reside in Israel.

The IJPR attributes this demographic transformation to the inflow of migrants from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Is this really surprising? Sadly, when individuals come from nations that have culturally a high dislike of Jews, many of these immigrants might hold anti-Semitic views that eventually get spread.

In France, anti-Semitic incidents more than doubled between 2014 and 2015, from 423 reported incidents to 851. From January to July, anti-Semitic incidents in the UK increased by 11% according to the UK’s Common Security Trust. And this prejudice is increasing.

With such spikes in Jew-hatred, is it surprising that Jews are leaving Europe? Equally concerning is Europe’s blindness to this anti-Semitism.

His comments come after a host of polls predict the anti-establishment candidate will crush her rivals in the first round of the French presidential election on April 23…”

  23. Migrant couples told human rights HAVEN’T been breached in Supreme Court ruling on income (express, Feb 22, 2017)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/770550/Supreme-Court-Minimum-Income-Requirements-ruling-human-rights

“THE Supreme Court has ruled that Government financial measures hitting British citizens who want their foreign spouses or partners to join them in the UK do not breach human rights legislation.

A panel of seven justices at the UK’s highest court announced their decision today in a number of linked challenges brought against a mandatory “minimum income” immigration requirement.

The Supreme Court has now decided the overall scheme is compliant with human rights legislation, meaning that the £18,600 threshold will remain.

The rules state that as from 2012 Britons must be earning more than £18,600 before they can bring a husband or wife from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to settle in the UK.

The minimum income threshold, which also affects people settled in the UK as refugees, rises to £22,400 if the couple have a child who does not have British citizenship – and then by an additional £2,400 for each subsequent child.

Previous rules only required a couple to demonstrate that they could maintain themselves without recourse to public funds.

Critics of the policy had claimed that around 15,000 children have been separated from parents because of the ruling.

A series of test cases had been bought by affected couples who argued that the policy breached their right to a family life.

Two of the claimants, Abdul Majid and Shabana Javed, are British citizens who have partners who are Pakistani nationals.

The third claimant is a Lebanese refugee, referred to as MM, who cannot find suitable work in the UK despite his postgraduate qualifications. He says his similarly-qualified wife has high earning potential and speaks fluent English.

The final case concerned another recognised refugee, referred to as SS, from the Democratic Republic of Congo whose wife has been barred from settling because their earnings were below the threshold.

Following the launch of legal action, a High Court judge in London ruled in July 2013 that the introduction of the minimum income requirement (MIR), which increases if there are children, was an unjustified interference with human rights.

Mr Justice Blake said the financial requirements set out in rules introduced in July 2012 amounted to a “disproportionate interference with a genuine spousal relationship”.

But the Government appealed and won its case before three judges at the Court of Appeal in July 2014…”

“BRITAIN is set to hand £100million to Somalia and South Sudan in foreign aid as the International Development Secretary, Priti Patel, announces the hefty new package.

The announcement comes amid fears emergency humanitarian aid sent to conflict zones inevitably becomes part of the currency and trade which allows those conflicts to continue.

Ms Patel said: “The world faces a series of unprecedented humanitarian crises and the real threat of famine in four countries…”

D’ja think!!! For those with any doubts, please read Der Spiegel’s interview with brilliant Kenyan economist, James Shikwati, “For God’s Sake, Please Stop the Aid!

      An excerpt:

Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa’s problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn’t even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid.

I know, I know … waaaay too sensible.

      • I am old enough to remember when the term “do gooder” meant someone who no matter what their motives made the situation worse, usually much worse. The aid to Africa and other Third World nations that have prevented those nations to develop their own industries and stand on their own feet seem to have been designed by racists to keep the non white races down and dependent on the Western nations.

I know is is paranoid to think like that.

  26. Turkey reverses female army officers’ headscarf ban (BBC, Feb 22, 2017)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39053064

“A ban on female army officers in Turkey wearing the Muslim headscarf has been lifted by the government.

The military is the last Turkish institution to see the ban removed. It has long been seen as the guardian of Turkey’s secular constitution.

Wearing headscarves in public institutions was banned in the 1980s.

But Turkey’s Islamist-leaning President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, argues that the ban is an illiberal vestige of the past.

The issue has been controversial in Turkey for many years.

Secularists regard the headscarf as a symbol of religious conservatism and have accused President Erdogan of pushing an Islamist agenda, converting many public schools into religious ones as part of his pledge to raise “a pious generation”.

Over the past decade the ban has been removed for schools, universities, the civil service and in August for the police…”

Italy – about 60 migrants, majority with expulsion orders, present on passenger ferry attacked other passengers, stolen their things and tried to sexually molest some passengers. There was only one policeman on board.

  29. SWEDEN AT BREAKING POINT: Police make urgent plea for help as violent crime spirals
SWEDISH police have made an urgent plea for citizens to assist them in solving serious crimes amid a spike in violence.

Officers in the city of Malmö have struggled to cope with a surge of serious crimes including dozens of attempted murders, beatings, rapes and other offences – and have now been forced to admit: “We cannot do it on our own”.

Malmö police chief Stefan Sinteus called for locals to come forward with testimonies testimonies in a bid to help police catch suspects.

  30. Former Guantanamo “victim” paid £1 million by British government, blows himself up in suicide attack
    Posted on February 22, 2017 18:00
    By Vincent van den Born

The Telegraph published the story today about the British IS fighter, who carried out a suicide bombing in Mosul, Iraq. He turned out to be Jamal al-Harith, a Muslim convert, whom the British government headed by Tony Blair freed from Guantanamo Bay, and subsequently paid £1 million in compensation.

Arrested by US forces in Pakistan in 2001 as a suspected Taliban sympathiser, he was sent to Guantanamo Bay in 2002. When he was released, then home secretary David Blunkett said: “No-one who is returned (…) will actually be a threat to the security of the British people.” Nevertheless, earlier this week IS named him as the man who had blown himself up at an Iraqi army base. They also released a smiling picture of al-Harith.

At the time, al-Harith was defended by Human Rights Group Cage, then called Cageprisoners. According to the Daily Mail, Amnesty International, has or had ties with this particular group. Meanwhile, the Telegraph reports that Tim Loughton, MP has said:

All of which certainly goes to show that terrorism (especially bomb vest murderers) is not driven by poverty.

  31. Migrants raped and tortured Swedish woman, now appeal conviction
    Posted on February 22, 2017 17:30
    By David Frankenhuis

Two young men convicted for violently and sadistically gang raping a Swedish woman last summer in the city of Örebro have today appealed their sentences. The victim was sexually abused, beaten and even tortured by the attackers, who are both migrants.

Through a friend, the woman had gotten into contact with the two men, a 22-year-old African and a 19-year-old Lebanese. They drank alcohol together at a party on July 10, after which the men took the drunk woman home. Soon after she fell asleep her ordeal started.

Both men repeatedly raped the terrified woman, Sveriges Radio reported when the duo was convicted in January. After the abuse, she tried to escape through a window but was stopped by the attackers. The 22-year-old then beat the victim in her face several times and even pressed a burning cigarette into the flesh of her thigh. After finally escaping from her own apartment, the victim managed to call the police.

When the perpetrators were arrested in November, they denied the charges. Police nevertheless matched their DNA to traces of semen found in the apartment.

  32. The Plot to Sabotage U.S. Court System With Thousands of Deportation Cases
The curious Stalinist background of an open-borders activist.

“Yes I want to use the U.S. judicial system—the immigration courts in particular– to jam, to backlog it so perhaps President Trump will change his mind and stop this ridiculous policy– this unpleasant and hostile policy– of deporting people..” (Jorge Castañeda to Tucker Carlson, Fox News, 2/14/17.)

The “ridiculous policy”consists of President Trump’s executive orders to deport lawbreaking foreigners, mostly Mexicans.

In other words, this “unpleasant and hostile policy” consists of Presidential candidate Trump’s fulfillment of his campaign pledges and of President Trump’s fulfillment of his pledge with his hand on the Bible on Jan. 20th—to uphold the U.S. Constitution.

The Mexican government itself has pledged $50 million in legal defense funds towards this jamming of U.S. courts as planned and promoted by Jorge Castañeda, who was introduced by Tucker Carlson as “Mexico’s former Foreign Minister, also a NYU professor and Board member of Human Rights Watch.”

Democrats and the mainstream media would have us gag and shudder at such fulfillments of the U.S. Constitution—because they offend the sensibilities of a former Mexican Communist Party member and spy for Cuba’s terror-sponsoring Stalinist regime.

“Whoops! What was that?” some readers ask.

Yes, amigos, I’m afraid that — either due to politeness or ignorance –Tucker Carlson scrimped on his guest Jorge Castañeda’s curriculum vitae. (We’ll flesh it out in a second.)

  33. Amnesty blasts France’s human rights record: ‘It’s at tipping point’ (thelocal, Feb 22, 2017)
    http://www.thelocal.fr/20170222/amnesty-says-frances-human-rights-record-is-at-a-tipping-point

“Amnesty International has said France is at “tipping point” with its current human rights record.

Amnesty took the unusual step of unveiling its latest annual report in Paris, with Amnesty chief Salil Shetty noting that France is “the cradle of human rights”.

But today its citizens are seeing their rights eroded in the name of security, he said.

“There are few countries in the world where human rights are more tightly woven in the national psyche than in France,” he said, but now the country is at “a tipping point”.

He took aim at the Socialist government for repeatedly extending a state of emergency since the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

The increased security measures, which extend police powers of search and arrest, have been backed by “all political parties” in France, he noted.

“It’s absolutely the responsibility of the government to protect the people, but it has to be proportionate,” he said, speaking out against “traumatising house raids… all pointing towards one religion”.

“We are very worried about the situation here,” he added.

    “The world is watching France.”…”

  34. Russia tested 162 types of weapons in Syria (gulfnews, Feb 22, 2017)
    http://gulfnews.com/news/mena/syria/russia-tested-162-types-of-weapons-in-syria-1.1982794

“Russia’s defence minister on Wednesday hailed the military’s performance in Syria, saying new Russian weapons have proven their worth in the conflict.

Sergei Shoigu told the Russian parliament that the military has tested 162 types of weapons in Syria, and only 10 of them have failed to meet expectations. He didn’t identify the weapons that performed badly.

Among the new weapons tested in combat for the first time in Syria were long-range cruise missiles carried by navy ships and strategic bombers.

Until recently, Russia lacked long-range cruise missiles equipped with conventional warheads similar to those in the US arsenals.

Shoigu said Russian pilots have flown 1,760 combat missions in Syria since the launch of the air campaign in September 2015, killing more than 3,100 militants, including 26 warlords. He added that nearly 90 per cent of all Russian military pilots have gained combat experience in the skies over Syria.

He said that a recent mission of the Russian aircraft carrier group near Syria’s shores was a success despite the loss of two carrier-borne fighters in accidents, adding that the navy gained valuable experience that would help prevent glitches in the future.

When Russia intervened in Syria, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government was teetering on the brink of collapse. The Russian air support allowed Assad’s troops to win some key ground.

“The break-up of the Syrian state has been prevented, a civil war has been practically stopped,” Shoigu said. The minister appeared to refer to December’s truce brokered by Russia and Turkey, even though fighting has continued to rage.

He boasted about a massive effort to maintain the Syrian campaign, saying that it has seen 2,000 metric tonnes of cargo supplied to Syria daily by sea and air.

There have been no official data on the number of Russian troops in Syria, but the Russian media estimated it at more than 4,000 based on voter rolls from last September’s Russian parliamentary elections.

Shoigu said that Russia has deployed two military police battalions in Syria, one to Aleppo and another to Wadi Barada near Damascus.

The minister said the military’s special forces have performed well in the conflict, targeting the militant leaders and helping pinpoint targets.

“Special operations forces have demonstrated their high efficiency,” he said. “They have played a key role in liquidating the terrorists, destroying critically important enemy facilities and directing air strikes.””

  35. Danish man who burned Quran charged with blasphemy (thelocal, Feb 22, 2017)
    http://www.thelocal.dk/20170222/danish-man-who-burned-koran-charged-for-blasphemy

“A man who filmed himself burning the Quran has become the first person to be charged under Denmark’s blasphemy law in 46 years.

The 42-year-old filmed himself burning a copy of Islam’s holy book in his back yard in December 2015. He then posted the video on the anti-Islamic Facebook group, “Yes to freedom – no to Islam” along with the words, “Consider your neighbour: it stinks when it burns.”

Danish prosecutor Jan Reckendorff announced his decision to bring charges in a press statement issued on Wednesday afternoon.

“It is the prosecution’s view that circumstances involving the burning of holy books such as the Bible and the Quran can in certain cases be a violation of the blasphemy clause, which covers public scorn or mockery of religion.”

This marks the fourth time in history anyone has been prosecuted under Denmark’s blasphemy clause: four people were sentenced for posting posters mocking Jewish teachings in 1938; two people were fined for carrying out a fake baptism at a masked ball in 1946; and two programme leaders at Danish Radio were exonerated in 1971 for airing a song mocking Christianity.

Danish prosecutors famously declined to invoke the country’s blasphemy laws in 2006, when the Jyllands-Posten newspaper published twelve cartoons picturing the Prophet Mohammed, the founder of Islam…”

“A Syrian migrant went on trial in Austria on Wednesday for allegedly executing 20 wounded government soldiers in his home country.

The 27-year-old was arrested in a refugee shelter in western Austria last June after being denounced by a fellow Syrian.

“Two Christians were killed in Al-Arish in the Sinai presumably by ISIS, but one whose body was found burned was not burned alive as it seemed from the first news. A public hospital source of al-Arish in fact reported that the body had a gunshot wound to the head.

Therefore it is presumed that he was first killed and then burned. His name was Medhat Hana, 45 years, while the other victim is his father, 65, killed by a firearm. The son was not burned alive as reported by the media but received a bullet in the forehead before being burned,” the source said. The two killings come after ISIS threatened on a video distributed between Sunday and Monday that it would attack Egyptian Christians…”

“The only way to jumpstart stalled Turkey-EU ties is to hold a high-level summit between the two parties, Turkish EU Minister Ömer Çelik has said, suggesting that it should occur in the first half of 2017 and produce concrete results in Turkey’s accession process, as well as a visa exemption to Turkish nationals.

“There can be no progress [in ties between Turkey and the European Union] without a proper Turkey-EU summit,” Çelik told a group of journalists travelling with him to Warsaw for official talks on Feb. 22.

Turkey has long called on the EU to hold a high-level summit to revise issues of concern to both sides, especially on the implementation of the March 18, 2016, migrant agreement. Prime Minister Binali Y?ld?r?m conveyed Ankara’s message to the EU on the need to update the political framework during a trip to Malta, the EU’s term president, last week…”

  41. WSJ – John McCain Makes Secret Trip to Syria in Midst of U.S. Assessment

The senator traveled to Kurdish-controlled Kobani, U.S. officials say

WASHINGTON—Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) secretly traveled to northern Syria last weekend to speak with American military officials and Kurdish fighters at the forefront of the push to drive Islamic State out of their de facto capital of Raqqa, according to U.S. officials.

The unusual visit, which officials said was organized with the help of the U.S. military, came as the Trump administration is debating plans for an accelerated military campaign against Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIS and ISIL.

Mr. McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, first traveled to rebel-controlled Syria in 2013, when he met with leaders of the Free Syrian Army, the umbrella group supported by America and its allies. This was believed to be his first visit to Syria since then.

U.S. officials familiar with Mr. McCain’s trip said that the senator traveled to Kobani, the Syrian town on the Turkey border controlled by Kurdish forces since 2012.

In a statement, Mr. McCain’s office confirmed that a trip took place, saying the senator “traveled to northern Syria last week to visit U.S. forces deployed there and to discuss the counter-ISIL campaign and ongoing operations to retake Raqqa.”

Mr. McCain is believed to be the first U.S. lawmaker to travel to the Kurdish-controlled area of northeastern Syria since it became a hub for American special-operations forces who are aiding local forces in the fight against Islamic State.

The short visit came in the middle of a regional trip that took Mr. McCain from Saudi Arabia to Turkey, where he discussed evolving plans to counter Islamic State in the Middle East.

After traveling to Syria, Mr. McCain met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital. Mr. Erdogan is pushing the Trump administration to sideline the Kurdish fighters that U.S. military leaders view as a vital ally in the fight against Islamic State.

It is rare for U.S. politicians to travel to Syria. Last month, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), secretly traveled to Damascus, where she held a controversial meeting with President Bashar al-Assad. Last year, Brett McGurk, America’s special envoy for the international coalition to defeat ISIS, traveled to Kobani and met with Kurdish fighters, creating an uproar in Turkey.

Ankara views the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in Syria as terrorists aligned with Kurdish separatists in Turkey embroiled in a yearslong battle for more autonomy. Mr. Erdogan and other Turkish leaders criticized Mr. McGurk after he was photographed receiving a plaque from a leader of the Syrian Kurdish force.

Mr. McGurk, who was asked by the Trump administration to stay on in his job, is in the thick of a debate over when and how to launch an assault on Raqqa.

President Donald Trump has asked the U.S. military to present him with a new plan to destroy Islamic State, and the report is supposed to be finished by the end of the month.

Central to the debate is whether or not to rely on Kurdish forces to take Raqqa, a city with a Sunni majority that is likely to be wary of Kurdish control.

U.S. officials involved in the debate say that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to launch a successful assault on Raqqa in the coming months without working with Kurdish forces. Turkish leaders have been pushing the Trump administration to sideline the Kurdish fighters, but they have not presented a viable alternative plan, U.S. officials said.
